Are You Living Your Best Life ?

Taking care of yourself is important for your health and longevity. Many of us work hard to make sure we get enough physical and mental exercise. We go to the doctor for our annual physicals, to physiotherapy appointments, or for massage to ensure our lives will run smoothly. We review our finances, pay our taxes, and update our resumes. But are we ignoring a crucial element that will help us maintain optimal health and wellbeing? More and more research indicates if we want to live happier and more meaningful lives, one of the best things we can do is attend to the personal spiritual needs of the soul.

The Rabbi Is In!

Rabbi Green is now taking one-on-one appointments for seasonal “Spiritual Check-Ups”. Be sure to book your appointment now by contacting Alice Weissmann, Ritual Secretary, at 204-452-3711 or alice@szwinnipeg.ca.

IS IT A PARTICLE, OR IS ITMESSAGE A WAVE? FROM

RABBI ALAN GREEN

Albert Einstein put it like this: “It seems as though we must use sometimes the one theory and sometimes the other, while at times we may use either. We are faced with a new kind of difficulty. We have two contradictory pictures of reality. Separately, neither of them fully explains the phenomenon of light. But together, they do.” I would say that this strange reality also applies to Teshuvah— usually translated “repentance,” but which literally (and more accurately) means “return.” The medieval philosopher/rabbi Maimonides reduced the concept of Teshuvah to its simplest terms in his Mishneh Torah, where he writes: What constitutes Teshuvah? That a sinner should abandon his sins and remove them from his thoughts, resolving in his heart never to commit them again, as [Isaiah 55:7] states: “May the wicked abandon his ways....” Similarly, he must regret the past as [Jeremiah 31:18] states: “After I returned, I regretted…”He must verbally confess, and state these matters, which he resolved in his heart. In good rabbinic fashion, Maimonides seizes on what might be called the “particle value” of Teshuvah. His approach is very specific. You focus on a sin, abandon it (in one’s action), remove it (from one’s thought), and resolve (in one’s heart) never to engage in that sin again. Further, Maimonides prescribes a test for what he calls, “complete Teshuvah”: A person who confronts the same situation in which he sinned, when he has the potential to commit [the sin again], and nevertheless abstains and does not commit it because of his Teshuvah alone, and not because of fear or a lack of strength. Here, Maimonides’ precision and specificity extends even to measuring the degree of one’s Teshuvah. This is the “particle value” extended to its outer limit. However, in my experience, Teshuvah is much more than a particle. It’s also a wave. In other words, if I’m successful in making a significant change in my life, the process may be described in the way Maimonides describes it. But the reality far exceeds the sum of its parts. Here’s an example: This past summer, Chaya and I spent two weeks in California: one in San Francisco, and one at Lake Tahoe. Both locations turned out to be physically demanding—San Francisco, with its preternaturally steep hills, and Lake Tahoe, with its elevations of 6000 feet and higher. Challenged by steep climbs in both places, we were astounded by our poor physical condition. Since returning home, I have managed to put in one half hour on my treadmill every day. I have also become acutely

conscious of what I eat, and how much I eat of it. It may not seem like much. But the results, in terms of physical energy, weight loss, and overall well-being have been extraordinary. Certainly there has been a “particle aspect” to all these changes. I could probably describe them in great detail, if pressed. But what actually changed is much deeper and more abstract than all these specifics. The trigger may have been huffing and puffing our way up towards the Mark Hopkins hotel in San Francisco. But what got triggered was a whole, huge change in my attitude and orientation towards the world, and the way it impinges on my life. This is the “wave aspect” to Teshuvah, the joy and fulfillment of which can scarcely be put into words. This is where poetry turns out to be so useful. Teshuvah as a wave phenomenon, is perhaps best expressed by something that appears in Gary Snyder’s anthology, The Enlightened Heart. Here it is: My heart was split, and a flower appeared: and grace sprang up; and it bore fruit for my God. You split me, tore my heart open, filled me with love. You poured Your spirit into me; I knew You as I know myself. Speaking waters touched me from Your fountain, the source of life. I swallowed them and was drunk with the water that never dies. And my drunkenness was insight—intimacy with Your spirit. You have made all things new; You have showed me all things shining. You have granted me perfect ease; I have become like Paradise, a garden whose fruit is joy; and You are the sun upon me. My eyes are radiant with Your spirit; my nostrils fill with Your fragrance. My ears delight in Your music, and my face is covered with Your dew. Blessed are the men and women who are planted on Your earth, in Your garden, who grow as Your trees and flowers grow, who transform their darkness to light. Their roots plunge into darkness; their faces turn toward the light. All those who love You are beautiful; they overflow with Your presence so that they can do nothing but good. There is infinite space in Your garden; all men, all women are welcome here; all they need do is enter. Indeed—all we need do, is enter. This High Holy Days, let us enter the gates of Teshuvah, together! With all best wishes for a beautiful High Holy Day season,

One of the great discoveries of quantum physics in the early twentieth century was what physicist Niels Bohr called “the duality paradox.” That is, elementary atomic particles may be described not only as particles, but also as waves. In other words, the concepts “particle” and “wave” both fail to fully describe the behavior of quantum-scale objects.

Congregation Shaarey Zedek is pleased to announce the addition of two senior staff to its current complement Matthew Leibl

has been hired as a Rabbinic Intern. His lengthy experience at Shaarey Zedek, as a Torah reader, and B’Nai Mitzvah teacher will bring a wealth of knowledge to the position. Matthew will begin rabbinic ordination training immediately, leading to his becoming a Rabbi within the next 12-18 months. His educational background in communications, which also includes a period as a radio sports show host, combined with his musical expertise will serve him extremely well in his new role at Shaarey Zedek.

Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze

has been hired to fill the newly created position of Director of Engagement & Education. Rena brings a wide range of experience and knowledge to this role, having served the Winnipeg Jewish community at the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and most recently Jewish Child and Family Services. One of her primary focuses will be on engagement and programming activities. Rena will begin her duties at Shaarey Zedek September 12th.

Shaarey Zedek President, Uri Kraut:

“We are most excited that we have been able to recruit two dynamic professionals to our synagogue who will help shape the future of Shaarey Zedek and the community for many years to come. Both Rena and Matthew have long standing ties to the synagogue having attended here as children. We are very pleased and proud to be able to reengage them on a professional level which will only enhance our Synagogue experience going forward.”

Congregation Shaarey Zedek is committed to being a progressive leader in the Jewish community. In the past few years, Shaarey Zedek has made innovations to its Shabbat services to include a new shortened, enhanced and engaging format with instrumental accompaniment as well as enriched life cycle events. In addition to being one of the first to establish a Dual Faith Cemetery Section, Shaarey Zedek was one of the first Conservative Synagogues to welcome Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Jews with full rights and privileges including family membership, burial rights and performance of weddings. Shaarey Zedek was also the first Winnipeg Conservative Synagogue to adopt Egalitarian practices. More about Matthew: Matthew Leibl joined Shaarey Zedek’s clergy team in May 2004 as our Chazzan Sheini, taking on a number of responsibilities for the congregation, including Torah reader, B’nai Mitzvah teacher, and keyboard accompanist for Shabbat services. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Matthew graduated from Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate in 2003 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 2006 before moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia to study journalism at the University of King’s College. He put his Jewish background and synagogue skills to good use in Halifax, first as a Torah reader and teacher at the two local synagogues (Beth Israel and Shaar Shalom), and later as a program director for the Atlantic Jewish Council. Returning to Winnipeg in 2010, Matthew joined TSN 1290, the local sports radio station, as a broadcaster, eventually becoming host of the weekday morning show. He balanced his life as a radio personality with a role at the synagogue for six years before joining Shaarey Zedek full-time to pursue his dream of becoming a Rabbi. Matthew’s passions, other than Judaism, include music, baseball, travel, great food, and Seinfeld, but his true love is his wife Heather Wadsworth, with an honourable mention to their pet cat, Moses.

More about Rena: Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze brings

with her over 25 years’ experience in the fields of Communications, Outreach and Jewish Engagement. Born and raised in Manitoba, Rena settled on the French Riviera after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from the University of Manitoba including a year spent at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since returning to Winnipeg with her husband and three daughters in 2007, where she lived for over 20 years, Rena has worked for a Francophone organization, the Council of Ministers of Education Canada, Manitoba Trade and Investment and the Centre for Higher Learning Research and Development at the University of Manitoba. Since her return, Rena has been both a volunteer and a professional in the Winnipeg Jewish community. Dr. Elbaze spent three years working in the field of Jewish Engagement with Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, where she partnered with Jewish community organizations, including Congregation Shaarey Zedek, to create inroads into community. More recently, Rena worked for Jewish Child and Family Service as Director of Communications and Outreach.

MESSAGE FROM

URI KRAUT PRESIDENT As I type this, Shaarey Zedek attendance at shul on Shabbat is still very strong. Our numbers are up and we are getting a lot of positive feedback about our services. We are getting a great response on life cycle events and our bookings are up dramatically for next year. This is all great news! We are also very excited about the new services for the High Holy Days and the new choir. We hope you all get a chance to experience both later this year. Although I wish success was that easy, and we certainly hope it continues, the Board wants to dig down deep and understand what you think a successful shul really is. Is it just solid attendance once a week? Is it having a daily minyan consistently? Is it having successful life cycle events? Is it great food from our kitchen? YES! All these things are critical but what else is a shul?

Shanah Tovah!

A % of our commission from the sale or purchase of your home will gladly be donated to the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in your name

From my perspective, the playbook that Jews have used for millennia draws on some key traditions that not only have allowed Jews and their communities to have survived but also have made us better people. 1) Gemilut Chasidim and Tikun Olam are about good deeds and being socially conscious about our behavior and how we can help. 2) Studying Torah: not just about an “old” D’Var Torah you have heard many times before, but about connecting our past to present through finding connections ethically to our ancestors and in doing so we find value in our past and it continues to be cherished. 3) We find “nachus” in seeing our children and grandchildren become Jewish and have the experiences we remember. All of these are key attributes of our identity and all of them are part of the new committees we launched earlier this year. We have many ideas to continue bringing to you but the idea that may be best for you is the one you are thinking about right now! If you are taking the time to read this, on what is hopefully a beautiful day, I bet you have an idea or two as well; Email it to me at uri@szwinnipeg.ca If you don’t have an idea yet but you agree these are core elements to our identity as Jews, let me know if you can help. We can use your thoughts and support on one of our new committees! I was chatting with a congregant the other day and a thought occurred to me after the conversation: it is very common for people to tell the shul to do more programs for kids, teach them more things, and engage them more. Although I agree in some ways, I am also a father of three children (and I will not provide any new information for you here), but children are busy, they need time to just be children, not simply placate our anxiety about our future generations – The best way to engage the next generation is to make Judaism relevant for this generation! What will make Judaism more relevant to you? Have a great fall!
