A HIGH HOLY DAYMESSAGE PREVIEW FROM

This year’s High Holy Day theme will be, “Is God Still Relevant to Life in the 21st Century?” It’s a big question. How to begin to answer it? Maybe a good start would be to look at today’s headlines. What is the media telling us? I think it’s slowly dawning on us that the battle against Al Qaeda, Al Shabaab, Boko Haram, ISIS, Hamas, Hezbollah, and other Radical Islamist groups is no passing phenomenon.

The truth is, fourteen years after 9/11, Radical Islam is stronger now than it was then. How can this be? Actually, this is one of the most important ways God is still relevant to life in the 21st century. Because there is every indication that the post-9/11 world isn’t engaged in any ordinary political or economic war. This is a war of religion—something that is just beginning to dawn on the secularized Western powers.

To really understand what the West is up against, it’s necessary to turn back the clock to another era of religious war: the 16th and 17th century. The same factors present then are present now: widespread discontent with a corrupt existing power (back then the Catholic Church; today, secular nationalist regimes); protests manifesting as attempts to return to a pristine form of the faith (back then early Christianity; today, early Islam); and a revolution in information technology (back then the printing press; today, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter).

The wars of religion in the 16th and 17th century would end in one place, and promptly begin in another. This went on for more than a century. Our contemporary war of religion could similarly drag on for a generation or more. Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom explain it this way: a decapitated spider dies and remains dead. But a starfish can regenerate itself from a single limb. Radical Islam is a starfish. It may be defeated, but it is bound to come back in many different forms and disguises.

How then might it be possible finally to defeat the forces of Radical Islam? Graeme Wood wrote a brilliant article in the March issue of The Atlantic demonstrating how ISIS, and all the other movements of Radical Islam are thoroughly religious in their origin and nature. We secularized Westerners generally don’t put much stock in theology. But until we do, we’ll neither understand our opponents, nor will we be able to defeat them.

The religious wars of the 17th century might have been won by weapons. But peace is won by ideas. What were the ideas that finally set the Western world of that time on the path of peace? According to Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, they were: the social contract; the moral limits of power; liberty of conscience; the doctrine of toleration; and human rights. We don’t usually

associate these ideas with religion. But all these began life as religious ideas—springing from the Biblical ruminations of the greatest minds of that era.

Today also, if religion is the origin of our current difficulties, then it might be that religion must be part of the solution.

And today, we are actually in a much better position than the generations who fought the religious wars of previous centuries. Today, the world’s great religions are mostly on the same side.

Jews are threatened by the resurgence of anti-Semitism.

Christians are being oppressed and massacred all over the Middle East. Moderate Muslims are being slaughtered by Radical Muslims. The Bahai are being persecuted in Iran, as well as the Yazidis in Iraq, and the Druze in Syria. So what is the solution to the current crisis? It’s simple, but it’s not easy.

But it is simple. If we stand together, we win.

How can we accomplish this? We need to train a generation of religious leaders and educators who embrace their respective scriptures in the light of love, and generosity. There must be an international campaign against the teaching, and preaching of hate.

If children continue to be taught that non-believers are destined for Hell, and that Christians and Jews are the greater and lesser Satan; if radio, television, websites and social media pour out a non-stop stream of paranoia and incitement, then all the military interventions in the world won’t be able to stop the violence.

This is a battle mankind must win, for every possible good reason. The world in which we live today—where people kill in the name of the God of life; where war is waged in the name of the God of peace; and where cruelty is practiced in the name of the God of compassion, is simply not sustainable.

The time has come for people of good will to stand together and say: “Not in the name of my God!” And the sooner we do so, the better.

WHAT DOOR DO YOU WALK THROUGH AT SHUL? MESSAGE FROM

So there are a lot of great things going on at Shaarey Zedek right now and we are coming in to a busy time of year, which I am sure you will be able to read about through the entire shofar!

On a more personal note, I was speaking to a congregant about our recent experiments with our Shabbat services and we were discussing what the shul needs to do to have a successful future. It became apparent that there are some, maybe many, who feel if the shul operates a daily minyan for a few, a Shabbat minyan for a few more, and a yearly minyan for many, many more, that would be good enough.

Davening - especially the Shacharit service - as you likely know was really a replacement for ritual animal sacrifice when the second Beit HaMikdash was destroyed 2700 years ago. It was seen as an adequate way for people to replace the sacrifice of an animal with, some view, a sacrifice of time.

But if you read about the history of prayer or the prayers themselves, it is not time we are sacrificing but actually our ego.

Some prayers are about asking for things for ourselves or our community; many are really about being thankful, which is interesting and sometimes rare, nowadays. To be thankful is to be aware we are not the only contributors to our current situation - good or bad. To be thankful is to recognize we are “not all that”. We are the sum of many people before us and many opportunities that we have benefited from and that we paid little for if anything.

But if you dig deeper, the prayer services seem to have a narrative structure that gently guides us through a winding road of ancient poetry and slowly moves us up Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs until we reach the top, which is

our Shemona Esrei. This is where we connect with meaning, ourselves, and with God. It is a truly powerful and intimate process that is sadly lost on most daveners due to speed requirements and language barriers.

Now, I have to say when it is described like that, davening seems pretty cool, but it is hard to execute, and reflection and meaning can be found in many ways. This is an ancient Jewish technique but it is not for everyone. It will not always resonate with people, whether the service is 3 hours or 90 minutes long.

Judaism is filled with beautiful and rich analogies so I apologize if I over use them. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel once wrote that all religions built their temples in space to create a sacred place to worship, but Jews built their temples in time. So from his perspective, Judaism is about sacred time not space.

“A time to tear down and a time to build, A time to weep and a time to laugh, A time to mourn and a time to dance, A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them.”

- Ecclesiastes From Ecclesiastes’ time to now, time is different for everyone.

And as we go in and out of different moments we need different things, and shuls are our gateways to this world of time.

Prayer is simply one of the devices we have used for centuries but it is not the only device, and davening is not the only thing we need. So how can Jews connect to a shul if that’s all we do here? And why would they if this is not the time for them to want that type of connection?

So I guess you know now, that I disagreed with that congregant!

Our first patriarch has a beautiful image attached to him, which is that of a big tent, open in all directions. I personally see it as four doors, recognizing that people were welcome from any and all walks of life and from whatever direction they may have come.

For a shul, we also need four doors for people to come through. One door is prayer, that is for sure, and I hope it always will be there and I hope we have a wide variety of prayer experiences for people of varying back grounds.

But what are the other doors a Jew may walk through?

Rabbi Sid Schwarz was in town several months ago when we chatted about this extensively. All over North America shuls are embracing this concept AND it is working!

I call them doors. Other people may call them motivations or callings.

Some people find meaning in studying Torah and learning about their history, the wisdom, the traditions of our past, and more contemporary thoughts about our present. In maximizing our Jewish growth, some people find we can become better, more well-rounded. Isn’t that what shul and religion are really all about – making us better?

In experimenting with our Shabbat services, the turnouts have been very impressive because we are a spiritual people and Shaarey Zedek can be a home for spiritual pursuit, which can be both varied and meaningful.

Can a shul be a place for spiritual pursuits other than just prayer? Let’s find out!

Shuls are societal institutions that can help with many of our communal challenges. We can help children learn Hebrew and Torah; we can engage seniors with active, intellectual and social programs; we can help inform all of us about local and global issues, about the environment, democracy and social justice concerns that affect our community; we can help coordinate in the event of international crisis; we can help Jewish Child and Family Services visit the sick and we can help clothe and feed the poor.

The list is endless but the roles are big and, more importantly, they are meaningful to people of all ages. This is how shul can be relevant. BUT a few volunteers and the staff at Shaarey Zedek cannot do it all – we need you to help with that change. Are you up for it?

After Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot we will be having a series of congregational conversations led by our team that will be the foundation that will hopefully lead to many new doors and many new ways for us to see and use our shul. We hope to see you there! The specifics will be announced soon.

RABBI SEARCH

After some preliminary work, the RSC began to formally meet in April 2015 (after Pesach). With much positive energy and constructive feedback from all members, we began to form an idea of what the tasks of our committee were to be.

We set out a list of the rabbinic/professional, interpersonal and personal qualities we would be seeking in such a rabbi.

Secondly, we developed some written descriptors of some of the main expectations for this position. Thirdly, we set up criteria upon which we will hopefully be able to assess both progress and success for this new position. These were then formatted in a ‘job description’ format, which is available as an open document on the SZ’s website. I hope you’ll take the time to look at it, too.

Further work has included the writing of a short description of our shul’s history, a ‘one-pager’ about the Winnipeg Jewish community, and a ‘short advertisement’ which has appeared in both print and web-based advertisement formats throughout a variety of Jewish media. The advertisements went out in the latter part of June, 2015.

UPDATE FROM DR. WIL FLEISHER COMMITTEE CHAIR As many of you know, the Shaarey Zedek (SZ) Board of Directors recently decided to begin a search for a new position for an additional rabbi to be hired for the position of

Rabbi, Director of Engagement and Congregational Development. This

person, in addition to participating with many of the clergy-related core duties needed to be performed at large shuls, will have a significant focus to engage and develop our current and future membership in order to ensure the SZ’s vitality and relevance. Our synagogue’s hiring into this new position will return our rabbinic clergy complement to two.

In January and February 2015, a Rabbi Search Committee (RSC) was formed with the mandate to develop and engage in a selection process for this new position. In addition to looking to ensure representation from SZ’s diverse community, the RSC also has input from other representatives of the Winnipeg Jewish community. The RSC is currently composed of Wil Fleisher (Chair); SZ/voting members Ben Berkal, Bonnie Cham, Patti Cohen, Anita Neville, Hart Pollack, Perry Schulman, Sarah Secter, Chris Yaren; Nonvoting members Nola Lazar, Leonard Schwartz, Joanne Seiff; and ex-officio members Uri Kraut and Lorne Weiss.

After a period of time over the summer, the RSC will be doing some preliminary in-person/phone interviews, and create a short list of potential candidates to visit our shul.

This may be as early as this fall, if all goes well!

We hope you will be a participant in the candidate visits.

We will be looking to seek the congregants’ input in a variety of ways, from survey completion, to engaging potential candidates during their visits to the SZ, to participating in programming around their visits, and perhaps in focus groups. We will look forward to your participation so that the RSC will make the best possible recommendation to our synagogue.

So what could you do in the meantime?

Well, you could: • Check out the SZ website [www.szwinnipeg.ca], and go the ‘Rabbi Search’ site, so you may be familiar with the above-mentioned items; • Tell friends in Winnipeg (and elsewhere) about this exciting new opportunity at the SZ; • Forward this information to any rabbis you think may help our k’hillah move forward, and encourage them to apply; • Talk to the committee members, and support their representing you in this important task and responsibility.

In addition, I am often at the SZ for Shabbat morning services. I’d be pleased to talk with you during the Kiddush after the tefillah/services.

We hope to do our best to contribute to the ongoing revitalisation at our shul and continue the SZ’s important role in Winnipeg Judaism.

VOLUNTARY DUES PART TWO MESSAGE FROM IAN STANILOFF Photo credit: Elaine Halpert

In the last issue of the Shofar I wrote about the growing movement away from the standard “Membership Dues Model” that most synagogues employ to affiliate members as well as raise the funds needed to support and maintain the existing structures and staffing models. One of the most intriguing new models is the “Voluntary Commitment Model” which has now been implemented in over 30 synagogues throughout North America. In the article I described what the model is, who the synagogues are that have implemented this model successfully and how the model works.

Why have synagogues chosen the Voluntary Commitment Model?

The synagogues I wrote about previously articulated three main reasons for choosing this model. These were for Financial, Values-Based and Engagement reasons. A study that was published regarding this model recognized that all of the synagogues, although motivated by one primary reason to explore the idea initially, ultimately came to the conclusion that all three of the above stated reasons are very closely linked – i.e. the Voluntary Commitment Model is not purely about finances; it is about synagogue values and member engagement as well.

Financial – Synagogues annually struggle with rising costs and tend to balance their budgets by raising their dues. The fundamental financial argument for moving to a Voluntary Commitment Model is that the dues system is limited and creates a barrier to people joining and staying in the synagogue. Families have decided that they would rather not belong to the synagogue at all, than continue to pay higher dues. All synagogues offer an abatement policy of some type, but everyone, including administrators, finds the abatement process onerous and problematic and families are choosing to leave rather than go through this process. Though primarily about revenue, the financial reasons articulated go far beyond dollars alone. This system creates a better atmosphere about money. Members feel empowered by knowing they have chosen to pay at a level that supports the synagogue, rather than feeling harangued about their lack of adequate support. Many congregations that have moved to the voluntary model report that it appears that this model makes it more difficult for members to leave the synagogue, especially post-b’nai mitzvah families and those facing financial difficulties.

Values-Based – For some synagogues the decision to use the Voluntary Commitment Model came from a deep commitment to better align their financial cultures with Torah and Jewish values. One synagogue in Louisiana chose the Voluntary Commitment Model because it best reflected who they were and it aligned with their vision. The financial aspect of this model became an expression of value, meaning and relationships and not a fee-for-service transaction.

For one 500-family synagogue in California the issue was

about trying to create a better community atmosphere and incorporate fairness into the funding model. Basically the “dues for membership” model is incompatible within a true spiritual community. By redefining the relationship between a synagogue and its members from a financial one to a spiritual and values-based one you create an environment of engagement and involvement as opposed to transactional and obligatory. What can be taken from this is that designing a funding model based on Torah and Jewish values like equality, inclusion, respect, trust and honour has the power to build meaningful Jewish communities where members contribute emotionally and financially.

Engagement – As Ron Wolfson, author of Relational Judaism wrote, “Synagogues have recognized that the predominant framework for synagogues for many decades has been the delivery of services, education and programs. While synagogues must continue to do these things, for the synagogue to thrive in the next era of American Jewish life, the synagogue at its heart has to be relational and engaged with its members.”

Synagogue leaders who were interviewed emphasized that the Voluntary Commitment Model feels the most in tune with the above idea. The intent is to create a system where people would feel they had become partners with the synagogue and not be told what they had to do to be a member. The desire to move to a partnership ethos was a consistent theme among the synagogues that have moved to this model At a focus group held at a synagogue in Detroit, one member stated that a Voluntary Commitment Model would make her feel like a true member, rather than someone who had to ask for a favour every year.

What was the Voluntary Commitment Model Experience? Does it Really Work?

All of the 21 synagogues that switched to the Voluntary Commitment Model from another dues model, experienced positive and healthy results. Every synagogue in the initial group studied believes the Volunteer Commitment Model achieved what they wanted to and that it is the right funding model for them! Anecdotally, that sounds great. But what does it really mean?

To better review the model and determine its success or failure in a measurable way, the following areas were

examined; “Membership” (retention and recruitment, engagement, and perceived value), “Revenue” and Giving (donations and other fund raising initiatives)”. Let me provide you with the following information.

Membership – The average annual net membership increase for synagogues that changed to this model was 4 percent. Two synagogues saw dramatic increases of 25 percent and 15 percent. Other synagogues saw modest growth, with 3 synagogues showing flat or reduced membership. As a result of this changeover, recruiting and retaining members has become much easier. One synagogue Rabbi related the following “Our new system makes it harder for current members to quit. In the past, when they got their dues bill, some were stretched financially and did not renew because they were embarrassed to ask for a dues reduction.

Now they stay.” You send a message to your members that they are welcome in the community simply because they want to be there, and that their financial commitment is in line with their financial ability. In all cases, not only has the overall membership shown an increase statistically but the level of member engagement and involvement has increased. Just as important is the fact that the perceived value and meaning of membership was heightened.

that this one: “Won’t too many people make token donations but still claim all the benefits of membership?” Many synagogues reported deep concern about this possibility during their initial planning, yet not a single synagogue reports that this was a problem as the transition went forward. Further, one of the themes that continually arose was the sense that the synagogue is better off - financially and culturally – when it presumes people will be generous.

Next Issue: Should Shaarey Zedek consider this model? If so, what are the Next Steps?

Revenue – Overall, synagogues that switched to the

voluntary commitment model enjoyed a 4.4 percent increase in total revenue. As part of the process to adopt the Voluntary Commitment Model, some synagogues created backup plans. Synagogues reported these two strategies: 1) promising the members they would return to the old model if voluntary commitment did not succeed; and 2) securing donors willing to make up revenue shortfalls should it be necessary. It’s worth noting that synagogues that had backup plans in place prior to switching did not have to use them! Even the synagogues who noted a slight decrease in overall revenue, determined that the engagement aspect has provided them with the feeling that they have made the right choice and believe it is just a matter of time before the revenue goals are met.

Giving – Some synagogues have reported that even

though they are attracting more new members, they are quite often paying less than the sustaining amount. Although not ideal, most synagogues still view the membership increase in a positive light. They are paying money that would never have been received before, and the synagogues now have the opportunity to engage them in a meaningful and long term relationship. One of the interesting findings from several of the congregations was that members who were paying reduced dues under the old system, actually gave more after the switch to the Voluntary Commitment Model. For example, in the first year of switching to voluntary commitment, one synagogue in Massachusetts reported that 80 percent of their members completed the new self-assessed Annual Commitment pledge form. Fifty-four percent committed to the same or increased amounts as their prior, mandatory dues. Twenty-one percent committed to increases of greater than 10 percent of their former dues. That means that 3 out 4 congregants that responded either maintained or increased their giving to the synagogue!

BEYOND THE BEARD

REFLECTIONS ON FLEXIBILITY AND CHANGE

Lately, people have been stopping me and asking “Hey Cantor, what’s up with the beard?” In the middle of the summer heat, all of a sudden people are noticing that I’m sporting some new facial hair.

As I write this, we are in the middle of the period called “the three weeks” – a semi-mourning time from the 17th of Tammuz to the 9th of Av, when we remember the destruction of the Holy Temple and the beginning of our Exile, and when I keep the traditional custom of not shaving.

To understand a little more why this is a mourning period to be honored by following tradition, I would like to share a story.

We read in the Babylonian Talmud (Gittin, 55b-56a): Because of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, Jerusalem was destroyed.

It happened this way: A certain man had a friend named Kamtza and an enemy called Bar Kamtza. He once made a party and said to his servant, “Go and bring Kamtza.”

The man went and brought Bar Kamtza.

When the man who gave the party found Bar Kamtza there, he said, “See, you are my enemy; what are you doing here? Get out!” Said the other: “Since I am already here, let me stay, and I will pay you for whatever I eat and drink.”

Said the host: “Absolutely not.”

“Then let me give you half the cost of the party.”

The host refused.

“Then let me pay for the whole party.”

Still the host refused, and took him by the hand and threw him out.

Said Bar Kamtza, “Since the Rabbis were sitting there and did not stop him, this shows that they agreed with him.

I will go and inform against them to the government.”

He went and said to the emperor, “The Jews are rebelling against you.”

Said the emperor, “How can I know that this is true?”

“Send them an offering,” said Bar Kamtza, “and see whether they will offer it on the altar.”

So he sent with him a fine calf. While on the way he made a blemish on its upper lip (or as some say, on the white of its eye)—in a place where we count it a blemish but they do not.

The Rabbis were inclined to offer it in order not to offend the government. Said Rabbi Zechariah ben Avkulas to them: “People will say that blemished animals are offered on the altar.”

Rabbi Yochanan thereupon remarked: “Because of the scrupulousness of Rabbi Zechariah ben Avkulas, our House has been destroyed, our Temple burnt, and we ourselves exiled from our land.”

The first thing you will notice from this story is that it is not clear who is to blame here. The story begins by pointing fingers at the Kamtza and Bar Kamtza episode, but seems to end blaming the Rabbis.

So who here is to blame? Well, actually both.

On one hand we have the host that didn’t like Bar Kamtza’s presence, and Bar Kamtza who wouldn’t let go the host’s childish attitude, even though the future of the Jewish people was at stake. And on the other hand, we have apathetic members of the clergy who didn’t bother to intervene and later on wouldn’t even make a change to the ritual to preserve Jerusalem and Judaism.

So, because people were not able to put aside their selfish attitude for the greater good, and because the Rabbis were not willing to make any changes to the rituals, the Talmud tells us that Jerusalem was destroyed, the Temple burnt, and we ourselves exiled from our land.

This should be a teaching for people who are not willing to make any efforts to accept the fact that not everything that happens inside the synagogue is going to be within their comfort zone; and also for us clergy, who sometimes are not willing to make any changes to the rituals even if the survival of the Jewish people is at stake.

In these times when more and more people have stopped coming to shul because they find it difficult to connect to the kind of services we have, growing a beard is a symbol and a reminder that is our responsibility to keep Judaism alive.

This story is teaching us that the future of the Jewish people is in our hands even if, once in a while, you feel uncomfortable and even if, once in a while, we have to put a treif calf on the altar.

Named the most influential Rabbi in America by Newsweek Magazine and one of the 50 most influential Jews in the world by the Jerusalem Post, David Wolpe is the Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, California. He previously taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, Hunter College, and UCLA. Congregation Shaarey Zedek has been host to the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning since fall 2013 and we’re excited to offer both Year One and Year Two Courses, and Graduate Course this fall.

This acclaimed global network of learning communities provides an outlet for adults to study together and acquire a deeper knowledge of Judaism with courses designed for all levels of knowledge and practice. The pluralistic educational approach is non–denominational and draws upon different Jewish movements, with the curriculum developed by scholars at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

ETHICS OF JEWISH LIVING 8:00 to 9:00 PM Facilitator: Rabbi Alan Green

How do Jewish teachings shed light on contemporary issues such as the environment, inter-personal relationships, end-of-life decisions, and stem-cell research? This course explores the wisdom of ancient and modern rabbis, scholars and thinkers, offering multiple Jewish approaches to conducting our lives in the communal and private spheres.

MYSTICISM AND KABBALAH: SECRET KNOWLEDGE IN JUDAISM Sun, Oct 18 to Dec 20, 2015 10:30 AM to Noon (10 Lessons) Facilitator: Rabbi Alan Green

Thanks to Madonna and other contemporary celebrities, Kabbalah today is one of the best known facets of Judaism, yet also one of the least well understood. As a result, despite the public chatter about Kabbalah, for many, this important aspect of the Jewish tradition remains a “closed book.” This new Melton Scholars course enables participants to gain familiarity with the rich history of Jewish mysticism, and understanding of many of the texts that have been so central to that tradition. Presented chronologically, the course provides an opportunity for discussing the progression of Jewish mystical tradition over hundreds of years. Discussions surrounding the texts will relate to enduring Jewish challenges, issues of pressing relevance for Jewish life both past and present. The course will expose participants to some of the ways that the particular lens of the mystical and esoteric has been employed throughout Jewish history to discover the relevant, deeper meanings of Judaism, as students consider the extent to which Jewish mystical teachings speak to the deepest mysteries of human existence, offering rich, meaningful explanations for so many of life’s eternal universal questions.

Shabbat Mornings

at 9:45 AM on Oct 3, 17, 31, Nov 21, 28, Dec 12 In a supportive, non-judgmental and non-competitive environment, students will have the opportunity to connect with their bodies, minds and spirits in this exciting new class. The practices will support increased self-awareness and self-compassion. Chesed, lovingkindness, will provide the foundational attitude to practice. Each class will include gentle movement (yoga) and meditation linked to Jewish teachings and will end with a guided relaxation.

Adults of all ages including teens 16+ are welcome – all shapes, sizes and levels of ability.

No experience necessary.

Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move in freely and bring a yoga mat, if you have one. The class will start promptly at 9:45. After the class, we welcome you to attend the service followed by Kiddush at 11:30 and Torah L’Chayim (Torah Study) at 12:45 PM.

Patricia Kovnats loves teaching! She has been a certified yoga instructor for seventeen years and also teaches MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). By day, Patricia works as a Mental Health Clinician. Her graduate work focused on using yoga and meditation as adjunct therapies in mental health service delivery. She is whole hearted in her belief in the value of these practices in promoting personal growth and healing. Patricia looks forward to sharing these practices with you in a Jewish context.

Solidly Jewish, educationally sound and beautifully and colourfully illustrated.

The Jewish sages teach us that “the world stands on three things: On Torah, on Avodah, and on G’milut Chasadim”.

These pursuits – study, worship, and deeds of lovingkindness – provide the framework within which Jews build their relationships with God, with one another, and with the world. Accordingly, Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim serve as the core of the CHAI curriculum, providing students with the foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning.

Our students will learn about these three strands and discover how they relate to their lives. They will learn the stories in the Torah, explore questions about God, and learn about implementing Jewish values. The students will also learn about the Jewish holidays. Because the curriculum spirals, students study something new about each holiday every year. Each year has its own focus for Torah, Avodah and G’milut Chasadim. Coupled with our Hebrew program, your child will receive a solid, all-round Jewish education.

The program comes with attractively illustrated workbooks and classroom materials. Parents can follow their child’s learning through regular updates.

B’nai Nevi’im: Children of Prophets Chavurah Held on the following Wednesdays at 8 PM: September 2, 16, 30, October 21 We have now embarked on a journey through the Former Prophets—as depicted in the books of First and Second Samuel, and First and Second Kings–featuring the likes of the prophets Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, Elisha, and others—not to mention King Saul, King David, King Solomon, and their royal descendants, right down to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. These often obscure books of the Bible offer a fascinating glimpse into the early history of Israel, and the complex and harrowing history through which we were guided by both Prophet and King, dozens of centuries before our own complex era. “Even if they [Israel] are not prophets, they are [nevertheless] the children of prophets” (Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 66b).
