01. The Kokon Intercultural Kindergarten

Project Year: 2021

Location: Berlin, Germany

Area: 2400 m²

Building: Villa Heike

Project Introduction

We want to see what the world can become. Evolvement, but what are we leaving behind? Us, ourselves. The beings behind the creations that push our future. The world keeps growing and merging, as do our

What about the children that grow up into their environment? What happens when there is no one to help listen, or to hear you? What if you have judgments places on you based on your culture?

You must be dirty. Your family must be poor. You are stupid.

If we can not connect to others we become lonely. We all have experienced loneliness at some point; the sadness, emptiness, and feeling of being unworthy.

What if there is a place to come together and build a fundamental rebirth of human connection

Culture and Kindergarten

To a certain extent, culture governs all of us. Children become self aware of surface based observations, including gender and ethnicity at a young age. With this awareness, there is a stream of unconscious learning of prejudices that comes from non-verbal or verbal behavior that adults portray.

Children have the curiosity to develop empathy and are keen to communicate. Kindergarten is the best age to implement a complex pedagogical challenge. Intercultural Kindergartens have been proven to:

1. Lower racial prejudice

2. Celebrate diversity

3. Develop learner and social identity

4. Promote human rights and citizenship

The building has a rich history, having been built in 1910. It has many nature activities and playgrounds in walking distance. The building can easily be reached by walking, bus, or by car. Accessible entrances can be reached by ramp and elevator.

The foreign born population of Berlin takes up 21% in total... it is considered an international city with about 190 nations living there.

01. The Kokon Process Work

Children are born into this world with an open mind that is easily influenced by others words and actions.

Similar to a Pupa, young children need a space that is safe and comfortable to grow in.

The Pupa crafts its Cocoon to develop in, with velvety layers and warm interior. What if children were never placed into a Box System but into a nurturing Cocoon instead?

In the Cocoon, children will be encouraged to learn and understand themselves and others. There is no fear of judgment. There is no holding back from unfolding their natural curiosity that the world needs.

With a surrounding as soft as Cocoons’ threads, as balanced as butterflies’ wings, as desirable to explore, children will prosper and emerge into the world with the open mind they never lost.

CURIOSITY AND EXPLORATION

The Ground Floor invites to an open space of culture and creative exchange. The museum and cafe can be visited from Kindergartners, Teachers, Staff, Parents, and anyone who wants to come by to enjoy a hot cup of cocoa on a rainy day. There are exhibitions of the children’s artworks they create during Art Therapy sessions. Weekly events in the museum turn in contributions to the Art Therapy supplies.

ENCOURAGING AND DYNAMIC

The First Floor has the major features of the Assembly & Multipurpose Stage and the Cafeteria. The Stage is the brightest element on the floor with ceiling greenery to add fresh encouragement to the mind. From ballet performances to singing to theatrical events, this part of the Kokon is lively whilst maintaining its touch of comfort. A herb garden inbetween the Cafeteria seating teaches children further about growth through care and gives a sense of accomplishment when being able to eat them.

LEARNING AND GROWTH

The Studyspaces on the Second Floor are all irregular shaped to help fight boredom. The irregular spatial organization is balanced with natural materials in neutral tones. The pop of yellow and blue give a feeling of happiness and calmness. The tables are the highlight of the rooms. They can be arranged in different ways to assist the children’s needs. Some may find it easier to concentrate separately while others may find themselves in a group.

LEARNING AND GROWTH

The Group and Play areas follow a colorful palette to take away from the traditional mundane educational design. The outside comes to the indoors and gives freedom for imagination. A wooden installation makes it possible to experience the space from various heights. Tired children can find escape to dreamland for a bit under the heavens tent.

CRAFT AND EMERGE

The Third Floor carries the heart of the Kokon. Art Therapy is effective for cultural exchange and non-verbal expression, which many children may feel more comfortable with due to language barriers or other reasons. On this floor the art and interior playground are open to one another so that full creativity and the fun of being a child can be freely lived out. The materials chosen are all safe and there is opportunity for multiple surface preferences.

The sun rises from the east side of the building and sets dusk at the west.

Site and Location

The site is located in Savannah, which is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia. The city is known for its beautiful coastal landscapes, its historical preserved architecture, and history. It is a city filled with fun, where cocktails are served for to-go and ghost tour rides are offered.

Concept

Glow within comes from a core point in the floor plan, which on the third floor, is the Zen Lounge. From there on the whole design is connected with its earthly material choices that include natural stone, sanded cork, bamboo, and recycled fabric. Tea is served along with having the treatments of regular massages or hot stone massages. Aroma infusions and plants enhance the air quality. These elements strengthen feeling of touch, sight, taste, and smell.

04. Central Market

Commercial Sensory Lounge

Project Year: 2020

Location: Hong Kong

Area: 12000 m²

Building: 93 Queen’s Road Central, Central, Hong Kong

Project Introduction

Central is a fast-paced, over-crowded commercial district that creates a disconnect from reality. Once being the local attraction for interaction between people, we now observed them in a rush while commuting and often on their phones.

During public surveys for the use of the project, tourists and locals alike asked for an area with less commercial elements and instead, replacing it with recreational and cultural activities. In its current state, the Central Market serves only as a connecting bridge from one location to another.

The people are tired of money focused companies taking over their space. This district desperately lacks a public space that can accommodate and unite each type of visitor.
