For a good chunk of her career, spitfire comedian Kathy Griffin has touted herself as a washedup celebrity nobody really cares about. Her real-life track record, however, says otherwise.

Griffin’s rips on the Hollywood elite – and Snooki – have opened up a world of opportunities: My Life on the D-List, her Bravo talk show Kathy, a book deal, sold-out concerts, and a relationship with Anderson Cooper that the rest of us can only dream of.

Acclaimed local designer debuts his spring collection Thursday On November 8, local artist and fashion designer Devon YanBerrong will debut his muchanticipated spring/summer 2013 couture collection, DEVONATION, at The Social (1715 E. Olive Way).

For this collection, his fifth in two years, Devon told SGN he was inspired by the trends and energy of the late 1960s.

“DEVONATION is based on my name,” he said. “It is my inspiration, a vision, an idea, or a story. Just like a little fancy town, city, or little world I am building in my mind. So this is the name of my planet.”

Flying high

Zemeckis’ latest is a soaring chronicle of addiction

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer FLIGHT Opens November 2 Seasoned airline pilot William “Whip” Whitaker (Denzel Washington) wasn’t worried about his return flight to Atlanta. Sure, he was a little wasted, drugs and alcohol still in his system, and hiding that fact from rookie co-pilot Ken Evans (Brian Geraghty) and veteran flight attendant Margaret Thomason (Tamara Tunie) isn’t easy. But when Whip comes up with a novel way to get the plane through some especially rough weather, easing the worries of passengers and co-workers alike, all is well.

Or so it seems. But just before they’re scheduled to land, a catastrophic failure

HARD TRUTHS For anyone who has known or worked with someone dealing with alcoholism and/ or chemical addiction, John Gatins’ (Real Steel) hard-hitting script rings with a brutally realized truth impossible to ignore.

The journey Whitaker takes, as extreme as the situations circling around it might be, is as honest and as unflinching as they come, showing the highs and lows of alcohol abuse with striking authenticity. How the pilot deals with his situation, the way he chooses to tackle it, is both frustrating and heartbreaking, leading to the type of forcefully tearful denouement befitting the character’s situation as well as his travails.

There are some small nits that can be picked. I get why actress Kelly Reilly’s character – a fellow addict named Nicole

Washington is magnificent, plain and simple, and this is easily one of the greatest performances I’ve seen from an actor in all of 2012. puts the plane in jeopardy again. Working off of pure instinct, Whitaker attempts a daring maneuver to regain control of the aircraft, averting a catastrophe in the middle of residential Atlanta. The plane does crash, but it does so in a relatively controlled way, and most of the 102 souls aboard survive.

From there, Oscar-winning auteur Robert Zemeckis’ (Back to the Future) return to live-action filmmaking goes in a rather surprising direction. Flight isn’t a conspiracy thriller, isn’t about corporate malfeasance or anything even remotely sinister. It is, instead, something of a modern-day variation on Billy Wilder’s The Lost Weekend. Instead of an acclaimed writer in the throes of addiction we have a seemingly heroic pilot whose battle with alcohol and drugs leads him to wonder if his quick thinking and daring-do would even have been necessary had he begun the day sober.

who is coming to her own fork in the moral road – is here, but I’m not absolutely sure she’s a necessity. There are times it feels like the only reason she exists is to literalize and verbalize many of Whitaker’s thoughts and actions for the audience, making concrete what should probably remain a little bit ephemeral. She’s good in the role, a fact I can’t ignore, yet I just don’t think her presence was required.

Then there is John Goodman. He appears three times in the movie, showing up as Whitaker’s best friend and confidant, Harlan Mays. The guy is a ball of energy, an enthusiastic dynamo who adds a few laughs and a lot of electricity. But it also feels like he’s in a completely different motion picture than everyone else, throwing me out of the story in a way that was entirely too noticeable. He’s an overly theatrical creation of Gatins’ imagination who never comes

across as genuine or natural, which is something of a shame considering just about everything else in the story reeks of tragic emotional authenticity.

A MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE Yet Flight connects, sometimes magnificently, in large part due to Washington’s enthralling and multifaceted performance as a

man on the edge of sanity dealing with an addictive personality pushing at every fiber of his being leading him to a cliff of personal devastation. There is nothing showy or inauthentic about what the actor does, the veteran two-time Academy Award-winner mining stunning interior territories. He doesn’t hold back, doesn’t give in, doesn’t try to hide the traits that make Whitaker a potential monster but which also help him be a true hero. Washington is magnificent, plain and simple, and this is easily one of the greatest performances I’ve seen from an actor in all of 2012.

Zemeckis balances all of the elements present in the film with the same confident ease inherent in his past successes, including Cast Away, Contact, Romancing the Stone, and Used Cars. He may have toyed around with motion capture for a decade with the likes of The Polar Express and Beowulf, but that doesn’t mean he lost a step where it comes to dealing with actors or delivering indelible real-life images onto the screen. The director makes a triumphant return to live action, reminding us all that his Oscar for Forrest Gump, love it or hate it, was hardly a fluke, and it’s easy to imagine another Best Director nomination in his future.

Flight isn’t easy, comfy, or relaxed. It doesn’t offer up pat answers or the sort of melodramatic platitudes most viewers presumably would find appealing. Instead, the movie asks us to look inside ourselves in a way that is difficult yet revealing, showcasing truths that are both eye-opening and poignant. Here, the crash landing Captain Whitaker is part of is literal but it is also figurative, understanding that sometimes you have to hit rock-bottom if you’re ever going to do what it takes to soar.

Azzopardi: Song you love most on Taylor Swift’s new album?

Griffin: Well, obviously the break-up song (“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”), because there’s something so hilarious to me that she’s writing a really silly, fun, insipid song about Jake Gyllenhaal while he’s promoting his shaved-head, gritty, SouthCentral L.A. crime movie. There’s something funny about a split screen of a clip from that movie and then a split screen of Taylor singing, “Never, ever, ever, like I am never going out with you, like never. Don’t even call, Jake Gyllenhaal. I’m serious this time.

It’s me, Taylor.” Look, if she didn’t get crabs from John Mayer, then she’s gonna live a long, safe life.

Spooky but sweet

Darkly delicious Addams Family comes to the Seattle stage Jeremy Daniel

The Addams Family (snap, snap).” This delightful, frightfully comic family has been with us now for almost 75 years. Originally a comic strip, they have been reincarnated as a live-action TV series, several TV car-

toon series, two blockbuster movies, and now a Broadway musical. Opening at the 5th Avenue just in time for Halloween, the stage version of this ghoulish family is a major departure from those earlier productions.

The family should be very familiar by now, with the strange patriarch Gomez at its (severed) head. The two children – the tortured Pugsley and his crossbow-carrying sister, Wednesday – join their vampyric mother, Morticia, and other oddities including electric Uncle Fester, witchy Grandma,

SILLS A STANDOUT Gomez is played by Douglas Sills, who embraces the eccentric character with a Spanish flair that is not only humorous, but also highly charismatic on stage. His voice is strong and his delivery precise – a good thing, considering the source and the deadpan precision that is needed for a lot of the subtle Addams humor. Sills understands his character so well that at certain moments, one wonders if he’s ad-libbing. Either way, Sills performs with a natural grace that completely seduces all who watch.

Wednesday, played by Cortney Wolfson, expresses the angst that any girl would feel when introducing their family to a potential suitor, with the added delight of devilishly dark humor. The conflicts of being true to her own self and trying to impress her fiancé’s family comes through, and Wolfson’s creation becomes a wonderful force to reckon with. Pugsley, played by Patrick D. Kennedy, is a more fully developed character here than in past incarnations. His torture (mental, physical, and emotional) comes from his sister’s departure from their usual macabre games to the fact that she’s growing up and moving on with her life.

His attempted intervention to keep his sister at home allows his character to shine with many humorous moments.

Blake Hammond is definitely a scenestealer as Uncle Fester. The unofficial (and undead) narrator of the musical, Fester explains what is going on and how the dearly

departed will return to help put everything back on the right track. His love ballad “The Moon and Me” is concrete proof of the character’s ability to control the scene. With his wonderfully cartoonish aerial ballet, his seduction of the glowing moon is not only hysterically funny, but it is a scene that will stay with the audience long after they leave the theater.

MEMORABLE MUSIC The songs are fun, clever, and definitely hummable – all the things one wants in a musical theater score. Both music and lyrics are by Andrew Lippa (off-Broadway’s The Wild Party, John & Jen, and new songs for the revival of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown), and his talent comes through as strongly here as with any of his previous hit shows. The book of the musical is by Marshall Brickman (who also penned the book to Jersey Boys). Brickman also rises to the occasion with a strong script. While the show has undergone rewrites (musically, lyrically, and story-wise) since its Broadway debut on March 8, 2010, the changes have been improvements as the musical is highly enjoyable, fun to watch, and just an all-out good time.

The Addams Family cartoons first appeared in The New Yorker in 1938. In 1964, ABC obtained the rights to create a TV show, which starred John Astin, Carolyn Jones, and Jackie Coogan. Though it ran for only two seasons, it had a major impact on American pop culture. The ghoulish clan went on to become a 1991 movie, which spawned a sequel two years later – both films featuring Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, and Christina Ricci. The Broadway musical featured Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. Nominated for eight Drama Desk Awards (winning one, for set design) and two Tonys, it ran for more than 700 performances before closing last December.

Politics done right

butler Lurch, Thing, and Cousin Itt. The story revolves around Wednesday, who has met a boy named Lucas and plans to marry him. Lucas’s family is coming to dinner at the Addams manse, and Wednesday begs her family to be “normal” for one night. The narrative avoids continuing either the TV or movie storylines, creating something completely different and very enjoyable.

Odin’s Horse lets all sides be heard

ODIN’S HORSE MIRROR STAGE COMPANY Through November 11 So often these days, issues seem to come down to a polarized side-versus-side, and this is never more true than when the subject at hand is the environment. How refreshing and authentically interesting, then, to see a play about logging in which no one is demagogued, or made to be only a winner or a loser!

(from loggers Stan Shields and Alex Garnett). And we meet a tree sitter who allows Arman to learn about what it’s like to stay for months 180 feet in the air with no company.

The tree sitter, Astra (Anna Warren), talks about the larger world’s need to protect the huge trees, many of them 1,500 years old or older. Her personal story is revealed, as well, as she opens up about a crippling depression brought on by being unable to save a child’s life as a pediatric oncologist.

Woven into the mix is Arman’s Icelandic heritage – and specifically the Yggdrasil,

Odin’s Horse is given a spare, quiet production, where the focus is squarely on the story and the methodical unfolding of all the sides of the issue. Arman (Daniel Christensen) is casting about for the focus of a second novel, and decides to join his new love, Callie (Hannah Mootz), as she gets a big promotion from her boss (Joe Ivy) and heads to Humboldt County, California, to manage communications for a large logging firm.

There, they both learn about the dangerous tactics that old-growth logging opponents have used, such as tree-spiking, and just how hazardous the work of felling those huge trees is even on normal days.

The audience learns about how the town depends on logging for most of its income

the great tree that binds heaven, earth, and hell together according to Norse mythology. And so the elements come together, in a very modern telling of an eternal human dilemma.

COMPLEX CHARACTERS Each cast member has a realistic mission and a real personal stake in the issue. Ivy’s tough but smart and business-driven boss is not an unfeeling monster – he has pragmatically weighed his place on the issue. Warren’s Astra is not a saint and many of her decisions are questionable, although she does get a lot of sympathy for wanting to make the world a better place.

gize his character a bit, his chemistry with Mootz is good. Mootz acquits herself well as the conflicted girlfriend who tries to give her man the freedom to interact with a threat to her job, while fretting about the consequences. The couple’s dialogue is particularly smart and clear in Robert Koon’s script.

Shields and Garnett, though their roles are minor, are key players in the unfolding drama. Their characters have strong moments of irony and irritation in how they manage their jobs.

Craig Wollam’s set design is best admired before the play begins, because the lighting does not highlight the sturdy tree trunk below stage. Jay Weinland’s sound design is

crucial, and powerful when the sound of a gigantic tree falling reverberates throughout the theater. Suzanne M. Cohen directs the cast with purpose, putting the ideas front and center without fuss.

This is a very lovely presentation. If you enjoy a real discussion of an issue, in which every voice is heard and respected, then get yourself to this play before it’s over! It’s one of Seattle’s best productions of 2012. For more information, go to www.mirrorstage. org, or call (206) 686-1280.

Annex’s latest premiere is fun, but is it really a musical?

A MOUSE WHO KNOWS ME ANNEX THEATRE Through November 17 A quirky, Annex-worthy world-premiere musical opened last weekend. A Mouse Who Knows Me combines the often-brilliant science-fiction storytelling of Scotto Moore and the top-drawer musical talents of Robertson Witmer. Knowing them both, my anticipation was keen.

The storyline meets the expectation of a just-out-of-time’s-reach scientific discovery – a sentient mouse – and includes Moore’s

MIGHTY MICE Dr. Audrey Whitman (Sara MountjoyPepka) is a rising star in the mouse lab and presents evidence that she has infused human genes into some mice and found one that recognizes her. Jealous Dr. Lorelei Meadow (Pamala Mijatov) has infused some aggressive genes into her mice and manipulates the two experiments into one, getting permission to mate the sentient mouse with aggressive female mice – which produces a litter of smart, angry mice. Dr. Cramer sees the financial advantages immediately.

A Mouse Who Knows Me combines the often-brilliant science-fiction storytelling of Scotto Moore and the top-drawer musical talents of Robertson Witmer. sometimes-dark expectations of how scientific experiments might be manipulated by those in power. In this case, sentient mice might be combined with robotic weaponry to allow wars to be won without putting human soldiers in harm’s way.

Of course, since it’s a humorous musical, weaponizing mice is an activity thwarted by some of the scientists and even the sentient mouse itself. Tah-dah, the evil military exploiter can’t succeed in his diabolical scheme.

The music (well-played by a contingent of excellent musicians, but pre-recorded due to budget constraints) is an entertaining amalgamation of ’50s style, a ballad or two, and some fun reprises, including an “announcing” song – apparently every time the lab’s head, Dr. Robert Cramer (Josh Hartvigson), arrives, the post-doctoral research-

Leilani Berinobis does a great job as the head of the department and John McKenna is the militarist. A fun ensemble, playing mice and other post-docs, includes Allison Standley, Tadd Morgan, Amanda Lee Williams, and Lissa Bak. Director Kristina Sutherland pulls it all together.

BREAKING THE ‘RULES’ As a musical, however, the entire production is a bit uneven. There are two rules about what music is supposed to do in a musical – move the story along, often faster

than any dialogue could, and substitute for emotions that are so big they can’t simply be stated. Moore’s lyrics do move the story along, but oftentimes are substituted for regular dialogue: “I’m so-and-so and I’m here to do such-and-such.” That’s more representative of what an operetta does.

A versatile basic lab set is designed by Robin Macartney, great costumes are provided by Samantha Armitage, and terrific lighting support comes from Tess Malone.

Still, does the whole thing actually stack up to a musical? In many respects, it might be better off as a play, sans music. That’s not faulting the musical additions, just ques-

tioning if the songs add anything important to the plot. There is really only one “big” song – when Audrey laments her situation – and it’s the only song that really does what songs are supposed to do in a musical.

However, that doesn’t mean you ought not go see A Mouse Who Knows Me. The production is as well done as most other Annex productions, and it’s an interesting sci-fi idea. For more information, go to www.annextheatre.org or call 206-728-0933.

A FRESH START Originally from Hong Kong, Devon moved to the United States in December 2006 to follow his artistic vision. His journey also allowed him to leave behind some painful memories. When Devon was in a middle school, he was attacked and stabbed because he was perceived to be Gay. The attack and other personal turmoil caused him to attempt suicide twice.

With a newfound freedom and encouragement to evolve and fulfill his passions, Devon began to thrive as a watercolorist in Portland, Oregon, where he met his nowpartner, Ric Saddi Devon Berrong-Yan. “He supports me and believes in me and helped to give me a lot of confidence,” Devon told SGN.

Billy Idol keeps on rocking

BILLY IDOL THE SHOWBOX SODO October 26 Age ain’t nothing but a number, and 56-yearold Billy Idol proved it with a high-energy performance in front of a sold-out Seattle audience last weekend.

He looked every bit the rock star that he was in the ’80s and early ’90s with his spiky blond hair, exposed smooth chest, leather-studded jacket, and devilish grin. Not only did he look great on stage, but his growling voice was surprisingly still intact. He glided through a two-and-a-halfhour concert that featured all of his top solo hits and a few from his days with punk outfit Generation X. “Dancing With Myself,” “Cradle of Love,” and an awesome extended version of “Flesh for Fanta-

sy” were rolled out in a three-song run early in the show, which highlighted some tricky guitar work from longtime cohort Steve Stevens. There were moments when Stevens completely stole Idol’s thunder, like when he plucked an electric guitar behind his head during “Blue Highway” – and then topped that stunt by playing it with his teeth.

CLASSICS WITH A TWIST Displaying versatility, Idol added a rockabilly take on “To Be a Lover” and an acoustic rendition of “Sweet Sixteen” to his set list. His soft version of “Eyes Without a Face,” performed while standing atop a pedestal wearing an angel-white buttondown shirt (completely unbuttoned, of course), was dazzling.

He closed the main set with “Rebel Yell,” shifting from side to side screaming “Do you feel alright?!” in the middle of it. But he wasn’t done yet. As the crowd chanted “Billy! Billy! Billy!” he reappeared and performed “White Wedding” that began acoustically, then picked up considerable speed and volume towards the end. He finally capped the show with “Mony Mony,” finishing it all off by beating his bare chest and belting out his best Tarzan impersonation.

The Seattle concert was apparently a special performance, a gift to a local fan who pestered Idol for many years to play at his birthday party.

The fan, Michael Henrichsen, was invited on stage near the end of the show and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to him.

But the real star on Friday night was Billy Idol. Yes, he’s older. But the guy still rocks!

A true ‘Evergreen’

Barbra Streisand’s classy Vancouver show

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer BARBRA STREISAND ROGERS ARENA October 29 On paper, Barbra Streisand is unequaled.

She’s the only living entertainer who’s won all four major industry awards – Oscar, Grammy, Tony, Emmy – plus Golden Globe and Kennedy Center accolades. She’s got everyone beat on stage as well, as she proved at Rogers Arena, Vancouver, B.C.’s hockey coliseum. Simply put, Streisand is in a league of her own.

Performing to an audience of around 12,000, this marked Streisand’s first-ever appearance in Vancouver and only her 88th live concert since 1963. The crowd was upper-crust for the most part, as tickets averaged $300.

“On a Clear Day,” “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered,” and “Nice ’n’ Easy”/“That Face” were built into the first 20 minutes of the show, along with a number by theatrical pop act Il Volo. Streisand then took a breather, sitting down and reaching into a bowl of written questions that concertgoers submitted beforehand. If you didn’t know it already, the megastar has a terrific sense of humor, and she displayed it candidly during this somewhat intimate Q&A session.

“Are you a fan of Canadian hockey?” was one question. “I’m a bigger fan of Canadian bacon,” replied Streisand, who admitted she doesn’t even understand American baseball or football. She sparkled, literally, in a sporty black pantsuit ensemble with a hoodie.

DUETS WITH BOTTI Handsome trumpeter Chris Botti played during a brief costume break, as Streisand slipped into a ravishing, persimmon-colored, draped goddess gown. With her neatly parted sandy blonde hair, you honestly wouldn’t guess this woman is 70 years old.

She and Botti, who initially met at the White House, dueted on a few songs, in-

cluding “My Funny Valentine” and a dropdead gorgeous rendition of “Lost Inside of You” (from A Star Is Born), which Streisand was genuinely surprised that the audience even knew. The pair delivered their finest execution on “Evergreen,” which featured a wonderfully subtle arrangement by musical director Bill Ross. A full orchestra sat on two illuminated squared-shaped pits with a catwalk running through the middle.

Although the orchestra never overpowered Streisand, allowing her to shine, there were moments when the concert seemed too much like an all-star event – with appearances by the ear-blasting Il Volo, Botti, violinist Caroline Campbell, and Streisand’s openly Gay son, Jason Gould. Mother and child harmonized nicely on “How Deep Is the Ocean,” but his solo interpretation of “This Masquerade” fell flat, even as mama bear gazed on intently from behind him.

HAMLISCH TRIBUTE Streisand gave an emotional introduction to “The Way We Were,” written by her dear friend and longtime collaborator Marvin Hamlisch, who died just three months ago. She immediately followed with a stellar version of “Through the Eyes of Love,” also penned by Hamlisch and used in the film Ice Castles, a song that featured some impressive high notes, which Streisand can still reach with ease and finesse.

I loved all the spontaneous, off-to-theside things she did that few other performers could get away with. Whether it was sipping a bit of tea in between songs, or brushing her hair to one side, or injecting the words “Of course!” after “Could we?” in the chorus of “The Way We Were,” or even mimicking herself with the signature phrase “It’s like buttah,” I ate it all up as any fan would. There aren’t many artists I’d forgive for sitting down and blabbing about a date with Pierre Trudeau, or for plugging her son’s CD as available for purchase in the lobby – in the middle of a song.

pet of “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” The closing number, Leonard Bernstein’s “Make a Garden Grow,” brought everyone from Botti to a 100-member youth choir to the stage.

It was preceded by a pro-environmental speech from Streisand.

No time was wasted in commencing the encore, as Babs invited her sister Roslyn “Rozzie” Kind to join her for a duet of the nostalgic “Happy Days Are Here Again”/“Get Happy,” once performed alongside Judy Garland. A rousing standing ovation, the last of many extended to Streisand throughout the two-hour extravaganza, was generously given to her as she waved goodbye and descended below the stage.

A DOWN-TO-EARTH STAR There’s a realness you get with Barbra Streisand that not many top entertainers offer. She isn’t afraid to be herself or admit her mistakes, such as recalling the time when she forgot the words during a Central Park concert and distanced herself from live performances for many years as a result.

She also teasingly asked Botti about meeting women on the road, shortly after Botti told everyone that he loved hotel rooms because of room service, housecleaning, a concierge, and chocolates left on the bed – to which Streisand responded, “Sounds like my house.”

The truth is, artists like Streisand are an extremely rare breed. If you ever see her in concert – and you definitely should – you’ll surely agree.
