by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer Published in 1999, Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower was an instant sensation, becoming a New York Times bestseller, with almost a million copies sold in the United States in the 13 years since its release. But when it came time to transform the book into a motion picture, the author wasn’t going to be rushed. He also knew that in the end he would be the one calling the shots – the story was too close to his heart to allow others to adapt the screenplay or direct the film itself. “No, no one else was going to direct this film,” Chbosky laughs. “I was either going to make this film or it wasn’t going to exist. MEMPHIS: THE MUSICAL 5TH AVENUE THEATRE Through October 7 They say that you can never go home again. If indeed that is true, then Memphis is the exception to the rule. The Tony Award-winning musical actually debuted in Seattle at the 5th Avenue Theatre in 2009, and after many workshops made its way to Broadway. Now Memphis has come home – in a big, triumphant way.
