Guns blazing, absurdist America attacks Frank (Joel Murray) is fed up. The lonely divorcé has had enough of his loudly obnoxious next-door neighbors, with his coworkers’ inability to speak in anything other than recycled platitudes from right-wing radio and liberal TV. He can’t stand supercilious “reality” shows where talent isn’t so much celebrated as the lack of it is ruthlessly laughed at and the clueless are set up for ridicule. He hates it all and is sad that people no longer communicate with one another and that simple niceties are apparently a thing of the past.

On the same day he’s fired from his job for speaking from the gut, Frank learns he’s terminally ill. With nothing left to live for, he says goodbye to his selfishly materialistic little girl Alison (Mackenzie Brooke Smith) and heads out into the urban wilderness to right a few wrongs before putting a bullet in his own head. But after permanently canceling a teenage reality-TV star in her high school’s parking lot, Frank comes across Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), a student who sees potential in the older man’s bloodletting.

What happens next in God Bless America you have to see for yourself. Writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait (World’s Greatest Dad) has unleashed a brutally bloody satire on modern times that is as merciless as it is hysterical. The movie takes literal potshots at everything from our obsession with Kardashian-type celebrity, shows like “American Idol,” “news” personalities like Bill O’Reilly, and idiots who use their mobile devices in movie theaters. Much like Super, the movie is a brazen middle finger to the status quo.

When it works, it soars. The early sequences where Frank is dealing with his coworkers, his daughter, and his neighbors start things out on a major high. It culminates when he comes across Chloe (Maddie Hasson), a spoiled teenage rich-witch who has been made a star by one of those obnoxious MTV reality shows like My Sweet 16.

What he does to her is so out of left field,

about the city and, most of all, passionate about a monorail proposal that would link each corner of Seattle together – quickly, cleanly, and without the use of automobiles.

His opponent, the only African American on the council, Richard McIver (Cedric the Entertainer), is a diehard supporter of adding more lanes to the freeways and in constructing a light-rail system – things Grant vehemently opposes, and because of which he wants to see McIver put out to pasture.

Having lived through these events, it’s easy to see the comedic political drama Grassroots through Seattle-colored glasses, overlooking many of its bumpier aspects and more unsettling flaws. For every misstep (and there are plenty), for every wrong turn (and there are a few), the movie understands the city, its people, and the way we view things, especially politics, rather well.

It gets our idiosyncrasies, if not perfectly, still rather beautifully, making the resulting movie far more enjoyable as a resident than it might be otherwise.

Or not. These sorts of political stories, about community advocates and activists who rise up to take on the status quo and discomfit those in power, are a dime a dozen these days. Heck, just in the past few years we’ve seen the rise of both the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street, and no matter what one thinks of either, one does have to admit that in the beginning, at least, their rise wasn’t constituted by the will of those with money and/or power. Granted, at least in the case of the former, this has changed recently, the moneyed interests co-opting those they

so completely unexpected yet so perfectly realized, I almost squealed. Frank goes to a place of cathartic mayhem so inexcusable it’s sensational.

Goldthwait can’t maintain this tone throughout the film, and even at a relatively brief 100 minutes there are some pacing issues, especially during the all-important third act. It’s also difficult to know what to make of Roxy, and as great as newcomer Barr is, her persona and her ephemeral reasons for latching onto Frank border on creepy. Finally, while Goldthwait’s satirical brush is fairly broad, he hits some pretty obvious targets, making the final destination nowhere near as shocking as it could be. see as a threat to achieve their own political agendas.

At any rate, director Stephen Gyllenhaal’s (Losing Isaiah) latest film, adapted from Campbell’s memoir by Gyllenhaal and cowriter Justin Rhodes (Contract Killers), is rather entertaining for most of its brief 97-minute running time. Phil’s journey from angry Everyman to driven political operative is a solid one, and watching him gain confidence as he helps build Grant into a minor political force rather sublime. Biggs inhabits the role with ease, bringing out nuances and shadings I’m not entirely sure were present in the script itself. His performance goes far beyond what we’ve seen in American Pie or others of that ilk, hinting at a depth, a passion, and a dramatic confidence I’m not sure he’s ever been allowed to mine or showcase before.

The movie doesn’t always work, and while I appreciate the fact that Moore was cast against type, the film never quite knows what to do with him. Some of his speeches and diatribes are zealously given, full of the vim and vigor necessary for the character to go from nobody to political upstart ready to usurp McIver’s throne. But in other moments he comes across like a petulant child, a whining brat no one in their right mind would listen to, let alone follow all the way to the ballot box in support of.

Yet, in the end, I was won over by what Grassroots had to say. I liked how it made Campbell a flawed, three-dimensional figure worthy of both pity and admiration.

I loved that he wasn’t close to perfect, and didn’t understand all things political right off the bat. Most of all, I liked the way he and his girlfriend Emily (Lauren Am-

His journey is one you can believe and relate to – which makes his leap into ultraviolence all the more disturbing, yet still understandable. There are times he made me relish the fact he was pulling out his gun with intent to shoot, and like the best satire he made me more uncomfortable residing in my own skin then I care to admit.

While it doesn’t all work, and while the outcome is really never in doubt, Goldthwait gleefully pushes buttons lesser filmmakers wouldn’t dare touch. What he’s saying holds resonance, and while the taste on display isn’t exactly kosher, if one is in the right frame of mind it’s still pretty darn

easy to swallow. God Bless America comes out with guns blazing, and even if its bullets don’t all find their marks, the majority strike right next to the bull’s-eye.

But, finally, the reason this movie works for me has nothing to do with my living in Seattle during the events depicted in the film. No, my enjoyment stems from the fact I like what Gyllenhaal and Rhodes have to say about the political process, about how they show us why candidates like Cogswell are so important to the continuing power and growth of democracy.

In a world where corporations are suddenly people and closed-minded billionaires can spend hundreds of millions on campaigns virtually without restriction, the fact people like Grant still exist, that groups like the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street can still arise, give me hope that we aren’t headed for a monolithic dark age straight out of 1984. Grassroots shows that win or lose, hope endures, and that the tiniest of voices can still be heard if they have the guts to stand before a microphone and let their opinions freely fly.

Rent is due

The hit rock musical comes to Seattle next month

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer RENT 5TH AVENUE THEATRE July 21 – August 19 On June 20, the 5th Avenue Theatre held a Spotlight Night on its upcoming musical, Rent. Spotlight Night is always an interesting affair: David Armstrong, the 5th’s executive producer and artistic director, creates an evening around a theme with aspects of musical history providing a context for the next production.

In this case, he decided to showcase “rock musicals” and their history on Broadway.

Rock musicals have been a controversial development, sometimes becoming huge hits and sometimes bombing so horribly that they disappear from Broadway for years, being thought too risky to mount.

Armstrong reviewed that history by focusing on some seminal rock musicals – going back particularly to Hair, a show whose creation and box-office power mirrors Rent in many ways. He introduced several members of the young, exciting cast of Rent, who did excerpts from a number of past rock musicals.

Early in the evening the cast did a medley from Hair, including parts of “Aquarius,” “Easy to be Hard,” “The Flesh Failures,”

and “Let the Sunshine In.” Antonia Darlene and Naomi Morgan (Mimi in Rent) soloed with backup from Aaron Finley, Andi Alhadeff, Daniel Berryman, Diana Huey, Heath Saunders, Ryah Nixon, and Sarah Rose Davis.

Finley, who will play Roger in Rent, sang “Save the People” from Godspell, and Berryman, who will be Mark in Rent, sang a duet from Little Shop of Horrors, “Suddenly Seymour,” with Nixon, who will play Maureen in Rent.

Other musicals included were Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy, Grease, The Wiz, Aida, Spring Awakening, and, of course, the Seattle world-premiered Hairspray. Armstrong said he thinks the rock musical is finally here to stay, with newer, successful offerings like American Idiot and Seattle’s home-grown rock musical Next to Normal.

The rest of the Rent cast – Eric Ankrim, Logan Benedict, Kirsten deLohr Helland, Bryan Gula, Lindsey Hedberg, Jimmie D. Herrod, Jr., Andrew Leonard, Trina Mills, Henry Nettleton, Brandon O’Neill, Casey Raiha, Sarah Russell, and Patrick Shelton – took the stage to help sing the seminal “Seasons of Love” from Rent, the powerful ballad of hope and love that has become the anthem of the musical.

The Seattle Men’s Chorus Sing Out

Hamlin SGN A&E Writer SING OUT: YOU PICK THE HITS SEATTLE MEN’S CHORUS June 22 To use a seasonally appropriate sports metaphor, the Seattle Men’s Chorus knocked it out of the park with its Pride Weekend concert at Seattle Center’s McCaw Hall, attracting a nearly sold-out audience. By the time the long, long program ended with a rousing “Dancing Queen,” SMC had clearly delighted its many fans – Gay and straight, young and old, longtime enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

SMC built the concert around a thematic approach: audience members voted in advance on what Chorus favorites they wanted to hear. The concept itself is a well-established (if rarely used) format and offers the proverbial “something for everyone” grab bag of old favorites and novelty numbers.

When that approach worked – and it did most of the time – things went terrifically.

When the Chorus strayed from the format (some numbers seemed unlikely to have been audience choices) the results were still outstanding.

Numerous adaptations of well-known poems by later composers were featured, with writers such as Siegfried Sassoon, Armistead Maupin, Rudyard Kipling, and

e.e. cummings adding class to the programming. As a result, the concert was often reminiscent of the “classical” performances of yesteryear that delighted serious SMC music fans but too often did not attract the size of audience the Chorus needs to remain solvent.

Overall, the program was at its best in the serious musical sequences. Many who came expecting a camp-fest were surprised (and delighted) with the polished, thoroughly professional results. One friend, attending her first SMC concert “to support my justout nephew,” laughed, “I thought it would all be drag queens on roller skates.” Minimal Gay hijinks and maximal musicality seemed to be the rule.

The evening began with a truly spectacular opening. “Everyone Sang,” set to a poem by Sassoon, found only one-third of the Chorus on stage as the curtain rose at McCaw Hall. The remaining members were divided among various parts of the auditorium: balcony, main floor, left and right corners. The resulting madrigal-like effect was truly magical. An obvious audience favorite, “Over the Rainbow,” followed. While the song’s inclusion was no surprise in itself, it proved to be one of many “expect the unexpected” events of the evening. About 15 men in Hawaiian shirts and leis stood stage-left of the Chorus and strummed ukuleles. No camp here – SMC turned the

Three audience sing-along numbers clearly delighted Dennis Coleman, artistic director of SMC, along with many in attendance, but in light of the program’s extreme length, this element could have been left out.

Act Two found the Chorus members more casually dressed. The sharp tuxes and snappy red ties of Act One were jettisoned and various shirt styles and colors, vests, and suspenders created an altogether different feeling. The simple set of staggered art deco or “art moderne” light boxes of varied colors remained, with occasional rear projections – a stylish look that added class to an already classy evening.

Members of the Seattle Women’s Chorus opened Act Two in the center-stage position.

Looking stylish in black slacks with black sequined overblouses, the SWC looked and sounded terrific with two fine selections One of the evening’s few outright comedy numbers, “Davey Jones’s Locker,” brought “Daydream Believer” center-stage with polish and fun. Following that campy outing, “i thank You God for most this amazing day,” based on a poem from e.e. himself, brought a classical nod to the programming. Beautifully written, beautifully sung.

Other well-chosen numbers followed, with “Livin’ La Vida Loca” ending the main program with a wink to Gay father-of-twins Ricky Martin and dance-craze choices of the recent past. A sequined backdrop catapulted to the stage to introduce “Dancing Queen.” The audience went wild.

“Seattle Pride Idol” sequences, several clever dance/movement numbers, a Diverse Harmony interlude, two drag queens, and some heartfelt speeches added depth and/ or fun to the overall program. While the running time, as noted, might suggest some cuts, this was a fun, fun night and a great way to start Pride Weekend.

Wizard of Oz classic into a brand-new musical experience, wistful and reserved. Some “Friends of Dorothy” in the crowd might have been disappointed, but this was a brilliant arrangement and performance.

Two outstanding soloists recreated the famous July Garland/Barbra Streisand duet, “Happy Days Are Here Again”/”Get Happy,” which had electrified viewers of Garland’s 1960s TV show. Both were tops, with great support from the Chorus. “For the Straight Guys” featured eight members of the Chorus in some topical LGBT satire.

The aforementioned “O Magnum Mysterium” followed – a perfect contrast to the tongue-in-cheek nature of the previous novelty number. “Five Romantic Miniatures From The Simpsons” provided a charming diversion (but, again, seemed an unlikely audience balloting winner). “The Circle of Life” from The Lion King was another musical highlight of the evening. Rear projections of abstract African-like leaf patterns added a visual bonus and gave the Elton John/Tim Rice classic an extra punch. Frozen will thaw your cold, cold heart

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer FROZEN GESAMTKUNSTWERK (AT BOOM! THEATRE) Through June 29 A thought-provoking play about forgiveness is being presented by a small theater company with a very hard-to-pronounce name, Gesamtkunstwerk. “That G Theatre,” as it’s called instead, has taken on Frozen by Bryony Lavery, and is staging it in boom! theatre company’s space (429 Fairview Ave. N.), where theatrical lights are hung on wires and fake walls are made from plastic sheeting. But don’t judge the show by its production values.

This intriguing play about an unusual subject – serial killers and their effect on victims’ families – is given a solid go. Director Dani Prados suddenly had to become one of the three actors, and he does a creditable job as a psychologist who has come from the United States to England to interview one of that country’s imprisoned serial killers. She and a colleague have found solid links between brain injury – whether from accidents or child abuse – and the inability of serial killers to prevent their own bad behaviors.

This brain injury linkage may move serial killers from being horrible or evil people who choose to kill, to people who are so injured that they no longer understand or relate to the social mores and limitations that keep us safe from one another. Indeed, Ralph seems to have all the attributes and personal history to be included solidly in her study range.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer JESUS HOPPED THE A TRAIN AZEOTROPE (AT ACT THEATRE) Through June 30 A crystalline performance about very un-black-and-white religious issues is one of the best theater productions in the city at this moment. Jesus Hopped the A Train, a play by Stephen Adly Guirgis (who also wrote the hit The Motherfucker with the Hat), is produced by ACT Theatre and Azeotrope under the aegis of ACT’s Central Heating Lab (in which ACT partners with a small company). You have only this weekend left to see it – and you should.

Directed by Desdemona Chiang, this tightly written and performed play takes place in the gritty world of New York City’s Rikers Island jail, primarily the solitaryconfinement lockup. Through an ingenious device by scenic designer Deanna Zibello – a rising middle third of a rectangular set that creates separate “cells” and reverts to an interview room when down – and the use of a metal stairway and catwalk area, a credible prison environment is created.

Sound design and music by Christian “Lil Kriz” Beeber and Jay Weinland create the clang of metal-on-metal and an ambient grittiness. Highly focused lighting by Jessica Trundy keeps the attention squarely on whoever needs it.

Lucius Jenkins (Dumi) is an eight-time (at least) murderer who has “found Jesus” in prison. Is that a stereotype? Even if it’s true, does it mean he is now an asset to society?

ACT and Azeotrope team up for taut jail drama

Frozen, winner of a Tony Award in 2004, involves Nancy, the mother of an abducted and slain 10-year-old daughter, whose progress from “frozen” (years of wondering where her daughter is and if she will come home) to forgiveness is chronicled along with Ralph and Agnetha, the researcher. In fact, each of the characters goes through a frozen and thawing stage, though whether the thaw produces something better in each life is questionable.

The play is long and angsty and, while generally smartly written, includes some unnecessary aspects. We learn at the end that Agnetha had a one-night stand with her colleague, something we don’t really need to know. Ralph goes through an important transformation, but where he ends up feels unimportant. So, this nearly three-hour play could certainly be shortened to good effect.

But oh, well, that’s the script.

That ‘G’ Theatre’s production might even be a bit overproduced, with a view of “thawing” that seems busy and confusing, as Peter Frost’s set is literally torn from the walls to reveal vines. But overall, the three actors do justice to the theme and, after one gets used to the British accents, also allow the strange English humor its place. This is not an easy play to tackle, and we can be glad that someone is presenting it for our delectation. It certainly offers something to think about.

in prison for shooting a Moonie reverend in the ass as for “stealing” his best friend into the cult. The Moonie died, so now he’s a murderer. Does that make him a bad guy, even though he had no intent to kill? Does he need religious faith to be considered “good”?

Valdez (Ray Tagavilla) is a prison guard.

Jenkins points out that Valdez has the freedom to choose any job he wants, yet he chooses this one and subjects the prisoners to ridicule and abuse. Does Valdez’s commitment to keeping bad guys in prison make him a good guy? Does his abuse of his authority make him as bad as the prisoners?

Mary Jane Hanharan (Angela DiMarco) is a public defender trying to keep from getting jaded. She starts off by telling Angel what is really an option at trial and derides “legal justice” as an oxymoron, then gets over-connected to Angel’s justification for shooting the Moonie. Her identification with Angel drives her to coach him in how to lie “properly” on the stand, thus putting her career in jeopardy. Does she subvert justice in this case? Would “jury nullification” (in which a jury finds the defendant not guilty despite the facts) vindicate Angel?

None of these characters is easily pigeonholed either way. The complexity of human thought and behavior is an objective plus in Guirgis’ meaty script, and these four talAngela DiMarco and Richard Sloniker in Jesus Hopped the A Train ented actors give taut performances (Patrick Allcorn also has a small role as a “nice” guard). Sloniker and Dumi, in particular, trope is not a safe, predictable company. But theatre.org or www.acttheatre.org, or call reach for all the nuances and stay away from it is certainly one to watch.

I got to spend a lot of time with my mom and use her as a role model. I got to use her like a litmus test for everything I did. As for performers, I grew up watching a lot of Chicago performers like Hollis Resnik.

Andrews-Katz: What was the first professional show you performed?

Morgan: The very first was when I was a kid, and I was in the musical sequel to Annie. I think it was called [back then] Annie Warbucks. That was at the Marriott Theatre in Chicago. A lot of my notes came from Martin [Charnin] and Charles [Strouse].

Andrews-Katz: How did you first come to work with the 5th Avenue Theater?

Morgan: Last year we toured with Les Misérables and came through Seattle. That was my first experience here. I’ve been through many, many cities so far and Seattle is definitely my favorite!

Andrews-Katz: What was your audition like for the Broadway production of High Fidelity?

Morgan: That was my very first Broadway show, and the part I auditioned for, they needed to cast very quickly. It was a lot of

auditioning in a short time. The initial audition lasted a long time, and then there was a work session with the music director, and then another audition, and then a final callback. I think I may have actually gone into the rehearsal for the show that afternoon.

Andrews-Katz: You were in the original revival cast of A Little Night Music recently on Broadway. What was your audition with Stephen Sondheim like?

Morgan: It was completely the opposite of the High Fidelity audition. For Night Music, I auditioned, and auditioned again.

Then I waited for a long time, about 2 months while they put the other pieces of the show together. I had given up hope that I was going to get the part and went into my agent’s office to find out what was next. It was then I was told that I got the part. It was great to work with Stephen Sondheim, and Trevor Nunn … and Angela [Lansbury], and Bernadette [Peters], and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Elaine Stritch … I just sat back and learned so much from all of them!

Andrews-Katz: You’re repeating your Paper Mill Playhouse role as Fantine in the 5th Avenue production of Les Misérables.

How do you make a song like “I Dreamed a Dream” your own?

Morgan: Luckily for me I didn’t really have an idea of what anyone else had done.

I knew the song and the rest of the score incredibly well. I had only seen the show once during its original tour. I didn’t remember the production or any specific performances. When I got the part, they gave me the score and the 1,400-page original novel and said, “Read this!” So I didn’t have any preconceived notions and worked with the original source material to get my opinions and insight to the part. I didn’t have to erase any preconceived ideas of who Fantine was.

Andrews-Katz: Over the years of Les Misérables playing around the world, stories emerge of “flubs” during a production.

What’s the oddest flub you’ve encountered?

Morgan: I think my favorite was at the end of Fantine’s scene in the hospital. The magic of the theater allows a bed to come on stage, but the bed didn’t enter. I had to do the entire death scene singing on the floor, crawling and dragging myself across to the bed. That was the most disembodying thing that has ever happened to me.

Andrews-Katz: Is Fantine a victim of herself or a victim of circumstance?

Morgan: I don’t think she is a victim of herself. She does everything in her power to provide for Cosette. I think that everything is working against her. I believe she was young and fell in love, and that she got stuck having the baby too young and had to maneuver around with her secret. She is a fighter and warrior, and in the end she is a provider and makes sure that this little girl is taken care of. I put her on a pedestal for surviving.

Andrews-Katz: After “I Dreamed a Dream” in Act One, you don’t really reappear until the final scene in Act Two. What do you do while the show is being presented?

Morgan: Well, I do have two significant breaks after Fantine dies. I do a lot of reading and a lot of writing sometimes. But for the most part, I am there as part of the company and actually do perform in the barricade and other scenes. I am still part of the ensemble, so I put on my dark wig and skirt and perform with everyone else.

Andrews-Katz: What is it about Les Misérables that seems to have captivated the world?

Morgan: There are so many different story lines and characters in this show. There really is something that everyone can relate to. Whether you are a young lover, or a father, a mother, a son or daughter … there are emotions that everyone can identify with. In conjunction with the incredible music and updated set, and perfect orchestrations, it’s the perfect combination where people get moved with art, and life and humanity.

Andrews-Katz: Regardless of gender, what roles would you like to play in the future?

Morgan: I always gravitate to shows that haven’t been written yet. I know that’s a horrible answer, but that’s what I usually go for. For written shows, there is Once on This Island, but I’m not African-American.

I would play a palm tree in that show if I could. It’s the most beautiful show. Speaking of the same composers, there’s “Mother” in Ragtime.

Les Misérables first opened in London on October 8, 1985, and moved to Broadway in 1987. It won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, and a Grammy Award for Best Cast Show Album. It is currently the third-longest-running musical in Broadway history.

thew McConaughey, and Channing Tatum, the latter being the movie’s muse after it was revealed that the Gay-loved dreamboat wasn’t just busting a move in 2006’s Step Up – he had done it for a living before getting his big break in the movies. One of Hollywood’s hottest actors, known for melting hearts in Dear John and The Vow, was suddenly faced with a pole-dancing past. His stripper alias? Chan Crawford.

“That’s so lame,” Tatum says in our recent interview. “I didn’t choose it. But Crawford?

What am I, Cindy Crawford’s brother?”

The dancing stint, in his late teens, lasted a mere half-year – but it was enough for Soderbergh to get behind the idea of turning Tatum’s dollar days into a big-screen event with salacious stripteases, a penis pump, and a military fantasy come to life.

“I just hope it’s fun for everybody: Gay, straight, male, female … animal,” Tatum says. “I just want people to go and get a picture into this world, because I don’t think it’s ever been done on screen – never like this.”

Never so hot, anyway. G-strings and ripaway costumes aside, there’s enough titillation in the names themselves to get the hormones doing their own little dance: Dallas (McConaughey), Ken (Bomer), and Big Dick Richie (Manganiello), in addition to Tatum’s titular character.

“Apparently they said they wrote the script with me in mind. I don’t know who they talked to,” he says, as if to suggest that his pseudonym isn’t necessarily a sham. But is it? “You know, it’s interesting because people say, ‘Aren’t you worried about the expectation of playing this character and what’s going to be expected from you the rest of your dating life?’ And I say, ‘I’m just gonna revel in the curiosity.’”

And so will we.

MAGIC MIKE: ALMOST GAY? What if the strippers in Magic Mike were all Gay? You could expect a totally different – and probably X-rated – movie, agree Manganiello and Tatum. But for bros who are all hetero to hang in … thongs?

“It’s pretty hilarious, to be honest,” Tatum says. “You just accept it and forget that you’re hanging out in these banana hammocks.”

Manganiello, who plays a hunky werewolf on True Blood, couldn’t forget – that thing was a constant reminder of how much he hates having things in his butt. “Werewolves don’t wear underwear because they’re just gonna lose them anyway, so there’s that,” he says, “but prior to that, no – I’ve never had a thong on, ever. So this was my inaugural voyage.”

And not just with thongs (he notes, now, “I’ve officially hung the thong up”). The boys went to L.A.’s Hollywood Men, a selfproclaimed “full-course buffet of women’s fantasy” in Southern California, to check out the scene. The clientele was mixed: Tatum observed lots of women – but also Gay men.

“It wasn’t just straight or Gay,” Tatum recalls. “Females and males could go. The only reason in the movie it’s just women is because that was my experience.” Mostly, anyway. He did reveal to us that he once danced (fully clothed) on a platform at a Gay bar.

“We talked about making it more of a diverse crowd [for Magic Mike], but it just always felt contrived. I never knew how to do it correctly.”

Do what you know, they say, and this is what Tatum, 32, knew: that he was 18 and living in Florida (the film takes place in Tampa, where it was also shot) when he decided to drop out of college football and strip. The rest, though, isn’t at all real.

“Magic Mike is a completely fictitious character,” he says, “but there was a Magic Mike in my group. He was a fantastic dancer and performer, but this has nothing to do with his actual life.”

For the other actors, that it’s so far removed from reality – shocking for the level of hotness in the movie – was part of the allure.

“It’s just male wish fulfillment,” says Manganiello. “You hang out, get drunk,

do a bunch of drugs with your buddies all day, and then you get out there on stage and grind on a bunch of women and have them grope you and stuff money down your pants. Then you take them all home, or into the parking lot or backstage or wherever, and you sleep it off, wake up, lift some weights and go back. It’s good work we’re being given.”

And it’s good eye candy we’re being given. Is Manganiello clued into just how good? “I have a NewNowNext Award from the Logo channel,” he says, “and I spoke at the Human Rights Campaign as a straight man in favor of Gay marriage. I’m well aware of [my] Gay fan base.”

As Alcide on the Alan Ball juggernaut, he really got our blood flowing – though, Manganiello says, the Gay community first latched onto him during VH1’s So NoTORIous, because Tori Spelling “is somewhat of a Gay icon.”

“But definitely True Blood,” he continues.

“That’s when I really felt it.”

Tatum has done some pretty Gay stuff in his career, too. Besides a goof-off scene in Magic Mike where, in Marilyn Monroe drag, he tries to charm the sister of his new stripper-in-training (played by Alex Pettyfer of I Am Number Four), he also simulated butt sex on Jonah Hill in the big-screen reboot of 21 Jump Street. The hard question comes: Which scene is Gayer?

He silently deliberates, then decides: “Humping Jonah, probably.”

As for the Marilyn scene, of all the things in the movie that weren’t make-believe, one of Tatum’s best roles might be as the blonde bombshell ... because this wasn’t his first time doing her. “I actually did that in my real life to a buddy of mine. It was his birthday and he was at Denny’s and I totally bum-rushed the table and embarrassed the hell out of him in public.”

And his reason for dressing as Marilyn should be obvious, but we ask anyway.

“Because she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the President. Come on.”

Channing, you’re so Gay. “Damn right – and proud of it!” he kids.

Drag queen, stripper, lovebird – no wonder those ladies at the revue, and the Gay men watching them, want to put a few bucks in his thong. There’s no alpha male in him.

“I don’t think you need to act tough, and I don’t think you need to cry to show you’re emotional and have feelings – that’s not the case either,” he says. “I love my life and I’m about as happy as I could ever be, and so I’m bringing that to my characters.”

Coming up is a movie with Mark Ruffalo about Olympic wrestlers, called Foxcatcher. Tatum teases, “That gets pretty dirty.”

Many Seattle acts are on the three-day bill and the setting is peaceful yet festive.

BUMBERSHOOT September 1–3 The granddaddy of local music festivals also climaxes the summer concert season over Labor Day weekend. Les Ballets Trockadero: great art with humor

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer LES BALLETS TROCKADERO VOLS. 1 & 2 (DVD) I know what you probably think about Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo: pure over-the-top buffoonery unworthy of a second glance. But I insist that the art of music with dance is very much respected and elevated in their performances. The dancers are excellent technicians, in addition to being gifted in the art of physical comedy. Every dancer has been classically trained and has passed a test for technical brilliance, sense of humor, and above all the desire and ability to be a team player. (One learns this from a most informative interview at the end of Volume 2 of this two-disc set.) And lest you think that these oh-so-Gay DVDs were produced with less than state-of-the-

art techniques, let me say that someone behind the scenes loves us – both picture and sound are absolutely first-rate.

Les Sylphides begins Volume 1 with no comedy at all – just beautiful dancing to lovely music very well played.

Unless seeing male dancers en pointe sends you into stitches of laughter, you will find nothing funny in the first scenes. At first, I was disappointed because I was looking for comedy and forgot what excellent, serious artists Les Ballet Trockadero can be. Silly me! Just as La Gran Scena shows genuine love and respect for the art of opera, so does the Trock love and respect serious ballet. Their work is so highly regarded that every big name in ballet has seen their show.

The humor creeps in slowly and with subtlety at first. Later some of it is not subtle at all and includes downright slapstick. But the expert dancing always returns, both for the sheer pleasure of it and as a foil to the comic elements. As a bonus, each dancer has a distinct personality and sense of humor – you get to know them and love them.

Volume 1 contains five ballet pieces, all expertly done, and a six-minute “Behind the Scenes” segment. Volume 2 repeats The Dying Swan but includes four other works and the aforementioned interview with Tory Dobrin, the Trock’s charming and articulate artistic director. Foster the People pump up Seattle audience

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer FOSTER THE PEOPLE WAMU THEATER June 26 For a band with just one album under their belt, Foster the People have made quite a name for themselves. The Grammywinning California trio have sold out tour dates from North America to Australia since exploding onto the scene in early 2011 with “Pumped Up Kicks,” their first major single.

On Tuesday night, the band (Mark Foster, Cubbie Fink, and Mark Pontius) played to another full house, this one at Seattle’s WaMu Theater. The concert was initially sold out, and a later ticket release went fast as well.

FTP opened their 70-minute set with “Miss You” as Pontius pounded away on a drum set positioned sideways on the stage.

Foster, frontman and guitarist/keyboardist, looked snappy, if not damn hot, in a marshmallow-white two-piece suit with gray Tshirt underneath, and groomed short hair.

He slipped and fell during “Helena Beat,” then joked afterward about the probability of it showing up on video.

For a big show, there was minimal stage decor. A couple of rectangular-shaped LED panels and one circular frame that flashed various images were about it, although spectacular lighting effects accompanied each song.

Concertgoers ranged in age from little kids to adults, with a good turnout of Gay men. In fact, a male couple in front of me embraced frequently during the show and no one around them batted an eye. That’s Seattle for ya.

1974, how it has evolved, and why it is so good.

If you, like me, saw this troupe when the Seattle Men’s Chorus brought them

to Meany Hall many years ago, you are also in for the surprise I experienced in viewing these discs. Perhaps those Seattle appearances were during a low point, for what we see here is much better, both in the actual dancing and in the humor, than what we

“It’s great being back”, said Foster to the hyper crowd. “Love playing here.” He made reference to this being the band’s fifth appearance in Seattle – their previous stopover was just last year at the Showbox SoDo. “Love,” a track included only on special editions of Torches, the group’s debut album, was probably the best number of the night. Similar to Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Foster has great vocal chops that receive less attention than his good looks.

“Broken Jaw” featured simultaneous bongo and drum banging from Fink and Pontius, respectively, while “Waste” was completely soaked in a bath of purple lights.

(Just between you and me, Fink has a very bear-y chest.) Also on FTP’s short set list were “I Would Do Anything for You,” “Call It What You Want,” and “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls).” The main set concluded with “Houdini,” which featured members of the Sound Wave, the official marching band of the Seattle Sounders FC. Foster went solo on a sweet rendition of “Ruby” during a two-song encore, and the group (joined by a touring guitarist) capped it off with an extended remix of “Pumped Up Kicks” that got everybody clapping their hands above their heads as confetti showered the audience and two giant blowup dolls sat at the edge of the stage. Foster was hoisted to the front line of the crowd to finish out an impressive, fun, and energetic performance.

It was FTP’s 92nd concert of a whirlwind tour scheduled to wind down in early July, with a few European festivals in August.

They’re expected to return to the recording studio before year’s end to work on their sophomore album. saw at Meany. When I ordered these DVDs I thought I would most likely watch them once, write a mildly positive review, and put them away forever. Now I can’t wait to show them off to friends.

Of special merit are two works from Volume 2. Le Corsaire is a pas de deux with music by Riccardo Drigo and absolutely fabulous choreography by Marius Petipa. Both dancers are as good as any you’ll see elsewhere, with amazing athletic power and grace.

The humor is good, but it’s the dancing that will wow you. There is nothing clichéd in their movements.

Even more impressive is the choreography by Peter Anastos in the following Go for Barocco, to the music of J.S. Bach. I was constantly reminded of my favorite program by the Mark Morris Dance Group (to music by Handel).

The Trock performance is easily of that caliber, and in some ways even better. For one thing, remember that all these dancers are men – not skinny ballerinas for whom dancing all evening en pointe has a long history, but tall, muscular men, far heavier than their female counterparts. The lifts and catches are all the more impressive for their masculinity.

Dance doesn’t get better than this!

The DVDs are available both as a two-disc set and separately. Highly recommended.
