Sir Elton John is a father. Elton, along with husband David Furnish, celebrated the birth of son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John on Christmas day via a surrogate mother. A spokesperson for the singer would not discuss the details of the surrogacy arrangements. “We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment,” Elton and David said in a statement. “Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and
happy parents.” Like his namesake in Elton’s early 1970s hit “Levon,” the baby boy was born on Christmas Day and weighed seven pounds, 15 ounces, said Fran Curtis, a representative for the couple. Elton and David formalized their relationship in a much-publicized civil partnership ceremony in 2005 after 12 years together. The ceremony was held at the Windsor Guildhall – the same venue where Britain’s Prince
of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles married. Elton has a residence in Windsor, outside of London. Elton says he was inspired to become a father after the sudden death of a friend. The “Rocket Man” singer had previously resisted David’s pleas for them to start a family together, but changed his mind after musician Guy Babylon died of a heart attack in September 2009. Elton, 63, and David, 48, then tried to adopt a 14-month-old HIVpositive Ukrainian orphan Lev, but they were rejected because of Elton’s age and the country’s opposition to Gay parents.
Katy Perry Never mind that embarrassing pic of Perry swirling around the internet. Instead, focus on the possibility she may upset Lady GaGa for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at next month’s Grammy ceremony. Her big hit “Teenage Dream” was among SGN’s best singles of 2010, two weeks before it showed up on Rolling Stone’s list, and she’ll likely return to Seattle this summer to sing it live, if not sooner see artists page 28

New Voices 10: BEST OF January 3 ACT Theatre New Voices is a victim of its own success! Its once-a-winter, once-a-summer singer “talent show” is a huge draw for musical lovers around the region, and filled ACT Theatre to overflowing on January 3. New Voices started five years ago. It began partly as a way of showcasing the talents of a group of college-age musical theater singers, as well as showcasing new songs that they found in developing musicals around the country. Boy, has it grown up! Including some of the most well-known musical performers in the region – Anne Allgood, Nick Garrison, Nick DeSantis, Beth DeVries, and Jennifer Paz – the evening is no longer a showcase of the up-and-coming performer set. As Contemporary Classics artistic director Brandon Ivie has grown, the evening has become much more about the new songs than the new singers.

A year in music can be summed up by the artist who sold the most records, or the song most downloaded online, or an overnight sensation who became a superstar, or a major comeback from a long-missed veteran, or by those who walk away with an armload of Grammy Awards (which will be given out on February 13). The following musicians have the potential to be 2011’s most memorable.
