The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) ruled on April 24 that Title VII, the federal sex discrimination law, protects employees who are discriminated against because they are Transgender. In its unprecedented decision, the EEOC concluded that “intentional discrimination against a Transgender individual because that person is Transgender is, by definition, discrimination ‘based on … sex’ and such discrimination … violates Title VII.” The EEOC is the federal agency that interprets and enforces federal employment discrimination law, and this decision marks the first time it has issued clear guidelines on Transgender discrimination. In March, the Boy Scouts of America removed den leader Jennifer Tyrrell, 32, from her position, telling her that because she is Lesbian, she “did not meet the high standards” of conduct set by the Boy Scouts of America. Tyrrell announced that her 7-year-old son Cruz would not remain in the national organization because of its discrimination against LGBT leaders and scouts. “We can no longer support an organization that has these policies and we hope to get them changed,” said Tyrrell. “That is our main goal.” According to Tyrrell, Cruz is “a little sad” because he “loved scouting.” The boy says he enjoyed camping and earning badges with his local Bridgeport, Ohio, Tiger Cub Pack 109 since September 2011.
