Peter Sartain, who recently opened churches in his jurisdiction to a petition drive against marriage equality, has now been appointed by the Vatican to lead a crackdown on the largest U.S. nuns’ association. The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) represents about 80% of the 57,000 nuns in the U.S. The group was founded in 1956, and has come under fire from the Catholic hierarchy for endorsing President Obama’s health care reform, including provisions on abortion and contraception. Sartain is to oversee a complete overhaul of the LCWR, which will include rewriting the group’s statutes, reviewing all its plans and programs – including approving speakers – and ensuring that the

Longtime Gay marriage activist and executive director of Freedom to Marry (FTM) Evan Wolfson came to Seattle Thursday, April 19, as the keynote speaker at the annual banquet of the Washington-based LGBT bar association QLaw. The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, conducted April 4-15, finds that people say the economy and jobs will be very important to their vote. A majority of respondents, 86%, said the economy is “very important” to them, leaving marriage equality at the bottom of the list. Iran and Afghanistan fared better. Gun control and foreign policy fared better. On one hand, this could be looked at as a positive thing. Voters are not seeing marriage equality as a divisive issue. On the other hand, it shows indifference – and that could be dangerous for a marriage equality campaign. What does this mean for the campaign in Washington state? Rep.
