Celebrating 41 Years!

Bumbershoot lineup includes Lorde, Weezer, Solange and Margaret Cho

The 2017 musical artist lineup, revealed this week, features Flume, Lorde and Odesza as the three-day festival’s headliners, plus Weezer, Solange, Spoon, Dillon Francis, Die Antwoord, Flo Rida, Haim, Conor Oberst, Gucci Mane, The Roots, Vince Staples, Big Sean, Lil Yachty, Sofi Tukker, Highly Suspect, Kaleo and The Maldives, to name just a few. The Labor Day Weekend event also includes several comedy acts, from Margaret Cho to Todd Barry to Judah Friedlander, not to mention authors, poets, a shorts film fest, theatrical performers and a Sub Pop PopUp Store, all converging at Seattle Center on September 1-3. If you’re an old-timer like me, then you’re familiar with Steely Dan. And if you’re familiar with Steely Dan, then you definitely know who Donald Fagen is. One of the pop-jazz group’s founding members, Fagen launched his own career in the early ’80s with his critically praised debut The Nightfly, which produced two hit singles, “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)” and “New Frontier.” It also earned seven Grammy nominations in 1983, including Album of the Year.

Fagen and his newly formed band, The Nightflyers, will be appearing at the Paramount Theatre on September 23 to perform songs from his solo recordings, Steely Dan favorites and “some swell surprises,” as promised by the man himself. Similarly, country superstar Lee Ann Rimes has been booked for New York City Pride on June 25 (she interviewed with SGN a few years ago) and dance-pop duo Pet Shop Boys are going all the way to the Middle East to appear at TLV Pride, in Tel Aviv, Israel, on June 10.

Finally, send good thoughts and prayers to Elton John, as he recovers from a severe bacterial infection that he contracted while touring in South America. The Gay icon, who had to be hospitalized, is hoping to get better and return to the stage soon.

Johann Johannsson and American Contemporary Music Ensemble give mesmorizing performance at Benaroya Hall

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer JOHANN JOHANNSSON WITH THE AMERICAN CONTEMORARY MUSIC ENSEMBLE NORDSTROM RECITAL HALL BENAROYA HALL April 20 This show gave me all the feels. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a live concert by acclaimed Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson going into last week’s show at Benaroya Hall’s Nordstrom Recital Hall, but when the evening came to a close, following a 90-minute performance complete with three standing ovations, I was grateful to have been in that room. It was what I hoped it would be – beautiful, experimental, intense, dramatic, uplifting – and I, as well as a near full house of curious fans, was captivated from the second the house lights went out to when they came up again.

Johannson is mostly known for scoring the music for the films The Theory of Everything and Sicario, which earned him back-to-back Academy Award nominations in 2015 and 2016, as well as composing the soundtrack for last year’s sci-fi thriller Arrival, which could’ve given him a third Oscar nod had it not been ruled ineligible by the Motion Picture Academy due to its strict, confusing rules.

On Thursday evening, the concert got off to a bizarre start, though if you’re familiar with Johannson’s solo work outside of his movie soundtracks, you knew that as the house lights dimmed and the distorted vocals of a young girl were heard repetitively overhead, that he was beginning the performance with “A Song for Europa” from his 2016 album Orphee. It set the tone for what would be a collection of deeply emotional, yet spirited and dreamy songs that were threaded together marvelously as if they had all been featured in the same film. “De Luce et Umbra” and a gorgeous, riveting

version of “A Sparrow Alighted Upon Our Shoulder,” both from Orphee as well, were performed next in succession.

Throughout the concert, Johannson either played keyboards, or piano, or simply hovered above the six-person American Contemporary Music Ensemble, but occasionally he switched film reels on a vintage projector that instead of displaying images, it just illuminated the stage with random lighting. The string players, meanwhile, often took turns multi-tasking and tinkered with electronic equipment as if they were scientists working cohesively in a laboratory.

“Sálfræðingur,” a track from the artist’s Englabörn recording, included a robust piano backdrop from Johannson, who is now based in Berlin. “The Drowned World” was enhanced with a glorious Celtic harp arrangement and “A Deal with Chaos” featured some intriguing radio static in the background.

Although he didn’t quite dive into his film scores for this show, with the exception of playing the theme song from 2013’s Prisoners movie, some of the material on

Johannson’s set list had strong hints, and perhaps may have included a snippet, from The Theory of Everything. Before dismissing themselves singularly from the main portion of the concert, Johannson and the ensemble performed a piece from his album IBM 1401, A User’s Manual and an enlightening rendition of “Odi et Amo,” which found a few members of the string section mildly scraping their instruments in dramatic fashion with their fingertips.

Returning for an encore, Johannson and the musicians delighted the audience with a sweeping performance of “Fordlandia” that intertwined a fierce string arrangement, a series of Icelandic voices and bright white strobe lights flashing radically on stage. It was an audacious finish to a concert that unexpectedly and pleasantly felt like a spiritual awakening or mystical adventure, or both – as if I’d dreamt of being on an outer planet. It was a journey that I was happy to embark on for one night.

Deadmau5 conquers WaMu Theater with flashy, cool show

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer DEADMAU5 WAMU THEATER April 22 All of those people wearing mouseshaped headpieces around the SoDo district last weekend weren’t headed to a rodent convention. These were loyal fans of electronic superstar Deadmau5, who drew capacity crowds to WaMu Theater on Friday and Saturday, as part of his 9-city “Lots of Shows in a Row Tour.” Also spotted in the vicinity and also headed to WaMu were hundreds of folks with glo bracelets, illuminating sunglasses, colorful tutus, butterfly wings, disco pants, furry animal costumes, spray-painted hair and hula hoops – yes, the young couple I met in the security line was hoping to get a hula hoop through the body scan machines near the door. I’m not sure if they were successful.

Aside from a performance two years ago at a DOTA 2 championship tournament inside Key Arena, this was Deadmau5’s first proper tour appearance in Seattle in years, a city he claims to love and a place he played steadily at before he became a marquee name on the global EDM scene. Besides reeling in large audiences to his concerts, Deadmau5 attracts a diverse group of followers as well – gay, straight, white, Hispanic, East Indian, college kids, adults – and even the significant percentage of gay men in attendance at Saturday’s show were a mix of muscle boys, cubs, geeky types and a scattering of couples dancing joyfully together. This was a safe, fun zone for everybody.

idea, this musical so worth the money? The company has invested months in the making of it, remaking their largest theatrical space into a “nightclub” atmosphere with a movable light-up stage. Why? There are many ways to construct a nightclub. Why have they built something that limits their usual 800+ seats to less than 300? Why must the stage move? That must have cost an enormous amount more.

It shrinks the allowable dance floor by a lot!

They must believe in what they’re doing.

That also has to mean that doing so is worth all of it.

The experience of attending Here Lies Love is different, somewhat, if you’re sitting in the balcony above or along the sides of the nightclub or on the floor where you have to stand for most of the 90-plus minute show. If you’re standing, perhaps wanting to dance the night away, you might get to dance a bit, but for most of that time, you’re watching a fairly standard musical theater production with set songs – many of them power ballads, not terribly danceable to.

You may love seeing the stage move, and being guided by enthusiastic lit-airplane-baton-wielding helpers to avoid standing where the stage is moving to.

Friends,” standing at the tip of an angled cube-shaped platform that took up nearly the entire stage. Having seen him three times before, what was different about this performance, besides the set list, was how much more engaging the Canadian DJproducer was with the audience, going as far as saying a few words here and there, or removing his own mouse-shaped headpiece for a good portion of the show. He didn’t really do that when I saw him years back at The Showbox Market and the Paramount Theatre, so this was the first time I got to see his actual face in-person.

Speaking of set list, this wasn’t my personal favorite batch of songs of the four

times I’ve now experienced Deadmau5 live, but the fans certainly loved it and begged for more when it was all over. “Phantoms Can’t Hang,” “Polaris” and an extended version of “Maths” were standouts during the two-hour concert, which found Deadmau5 perched above the cube that flashed a series of bright, colorful and sometimes intriguing images, such as cows wearing mouse heads (if I saw that correctly). During a very high energy rendition of “Moar Ghosts N’ Stuff,” images of middle fingers slid from side to side on the cube, while adorable cat faces were displayed during “Cat Thruster.”

But part of writing about such an experience is also to evaluate what they are attempting to accomplish and whether it is successful. And in that regard, there is a lot of head-scratching. First came a conceptalbum by David Byrne (of Talking Heads) and Fatboy Slim. Byrne has said that he wanted to figure out how a powerful person “ticks” and to write music about that. But why would he pick Imelda Marcos? And does his portrayal of her story help us understand what makes her tick?

The Marcos’ (Ferdinand and Imelda) became defacto dictators in the Philippines in the ‘70s and ‘80s until what became known as the People Power Revolution over four days in February, 1986. The Marcos’ were airlifted out of the country and the Philippines were able to return to democracy. The uniqueness of the Revolution was that it was non-violent – an ultimate example of Mahatma Gandhi’s precepts. It’s a fascinating story, probably, but the musical portrays such a slim portion of it that it’s not even clear anyone who didn’t know this would absorb very much of that history from attending.

Byrne wanted to set the story in a nightclub to have people dance to the musical story. Imelda Marcos was said to love disco. Great! There’s a big disco ball that starts onstage before the musical, but none of the music is disco! It’s set in the Philippines, but none of the music can be said to be reminiscent of Filipino music! Why?

The story Byrne creates about Imelda is very, very similar to Evita Peron. In fact, Imelda was likened to Evita even as she rose to power, since the musical Evita was already an iconic theatrical experience about a young, poor, pretty woman who rises through association with a powerful man. We learn that Imelda is the prettiest girl in Tacloban, her tiny town.

We see her fall in love with Ninoy Aquino, who dumps her, and later Ferdinand Marcos, who runs for and wins the presidency. We hear that he cheats on her and she takes lots of pills. Poor Imelda. She’s a sad rich woman who travels the world hobnobbing with celebrities and talking with empty words about giving back to the Filipino people. She shuns the people she grew up with and takes more pills.

From speaking to Filipinos here, there has been a lot of concern about “another white man” writing about a country less known. Would it be a respectful portrayal?

It does seem respectful, though the amount of history included feels like Wikipedia-lite. It’s straightforward: this happened, then that happened. But in the focus on Imelda, it’s extremely weak.

If all she is is a pretty woman who married well and took a lot of pills, why has she been able to return to the Philippines and be elected over and over again to their government? There has to be some smarts there! So, why is this how she is portrayed?

The end of the musical is also weak.

As expected, the show featured several cuts from the new Deadmau5 album, W:/2016ALBUM/, including “Snowcone,” “Deus Ex Machina,” “2448” and “No Problem,” though he also peppered his performance with older material, like “The Veldt” from his 2012 release Album Title Goes Here and a fantastic, electrifying version of “Strobe” close to the finale.

“And you get a Starbucks! And you get a Starbucks!” joked Deadmau5 mimicking Oprah’s famous quote, as he laughed charmingly out to the crowd. “Everybody gets a Starbucks!” He was actually a little giddy during this performance, something I’ve never witnessed from the Toronto native, who has a reputation for being cocky and very reserved. Get this – he even wished a fan a “Happy Birthday.”

Later in the concert, he yelled out “I do love Seattle! But I love Rocket League more!” referring to the popular video game that now features DLC (Downloadable Content) of Deadmau5. He then seized the opportunity to promote it by showing images from Rocket League in the cube.

The concert climaxed with a one-song encore featuring “Raise Your Weapon,” as the crowd sang along to the vocals of Greta Svabo Bech on the 2011 mega hit. It capped Deadmau5’s largest tour appearances in the Emerald City, two consecutive nights at WaMu Theater with a filled room, from a packed floor to every seat taken in the bleachers. This is how big he’s become, and it’s a testament to his music, which he consistently keeps putting out to keep all of his fans happy.

were able to force out a dictator – nonviolently, no less – is truly important. The kind of dictatorship that the Marcos’ created is reminiscent of what could happen here with our current administration trying to dismantle our State Department, Education Department, EPA, and many others. While the “People” are given a song at the end (“God draws straight with crooked lines”) it certainly does not help us understand how that happened.

The production is visually pretty. There are great costumes (by Clint Ramos), aspects of exciting set design (by David Korins) and mass different lighting experiences (designed by Justin Townsend).

The most Filipino part of the event is the gorgeous choreography by Annie-B Parson.

If we didn’t have that, the entire experience would be almost non-ethnically centered!

In summarizing, without being able to answer the why questions, since so many of the choices are opaque as to the reasoning, it’s also hard to then determine if they are successful. It’s a pleasant experience in many ways, for a one-time experience, but I wouldn’t want to go again. In that way, if it’s not worth going again, then maybe the question is was it worth the effort?

As Agnetha, Jonelle Jordan is remarkable in the role as a psychiatrist probing the roots of the mental anomalies behind such killers’ desires and motivations. An undercurrent of madness lurks on some level for every character and this drives this gripping drama.

The stylized set is lit in tones of stone gray with three separate stages for each actor to recount their respective stories. They eventually jump to these stages, like hopscotching iceberg to iceberg, and reach out to each other. Scenic designer Christopher

Mumaw and lighting designer Ryan Dunn deserve kudos for their work, which leave a darkly beautiful lasting impression.

The title Frozen alludes to the psychological states of all three characters. Although the characters speak about their states of being frozen and their respective thaws, it’s a far stretch to say that complete emotional ground is covered here. However, with it’s talented acting, ArtsWest’s production has enough fire in it to be worthy of a visit.

The Secret Garden blooms brilliantly

Based on the book by the same name, the musical takes over the stage at the 5th Avenue Theatre. Included in this lush tale are beautiful score (written by Pulitzer Prize winning Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon), and a wonderful story for the entire family.

The story tells of 10-year-old Mary Lennox, a precocious girl raised by servants in English dominated India, at the turn of the 20th century. After disease kills her entire family, she is reluctantly sent to her only living relative, an Uncle in England she has never met named Archibald Craven.

Mary’s instructions are very strict until she meets Martha, a kindly housekeeper that informs Mary of the late Mrs. Craven’s secret walled-up garden. She meets Dickon, a boy that works with the groundkeeper, and Dickon teaches Mary how to properly care for a garden. But those in the house are not happy about the secret garden being dis-

turbed, and Mary soon hears haunting crying from somewhere in the house, and the whispers of ghosts all about her. When Mary eventually finds her way into the garden, the hidden secrets of the household are revealed, and Mary faces her greatest challenges.

The entire cast of the show are all absolutely fantastic, and with the new sound system at the 5th Avenue, it is truly a pleasure to hear and understand them. While half of the cast are ghosts, they still have strong stage presence. Lizzie Klemperer plays “Lily,” the former wife of Archibald, who guides and leads the living characters to find one another and the secret garden.

Her voice is a pure one, and she sings with utter clarity. The two Craven brothers are played by Tam Mutu (Archibald) and Josh Young (Dr. Neville). It is not often a (contemporary) musical showcases the male voice, but here the actors both do excellent jobs. The duet “Lily’s Eyes” is pure magic as the two men are joined by the lamentation of the women they both loved. The emotion and empathy felt is easily conveyed by the voices of these two men.

Tony Award winner Daisy Eagen plays the maid “Martha.” Quite familiar with the show, Ms. Eagen originated the role of “Mary Lennox,” returning to the show and playing a role equally as strong. “Martha”

is the first friend Mary makes in her new home and the maid guides her with two important songs: “A Brand New Coat” (revised for this version of the musical) and the empowering “Hold On,” what could easily be called the “eleven o’clock number” of the musical. Her voice is strong, clear and she commands full attention during the two delightful solos.

The real star of this musical is Bea Corley who plays Mary Lennox. For a young lady, she plays the role with an adult’s precision and experience. The girl’s character is pompous and entitled, and Ms. Corley conveys it to the audience without allowing it to become cliché. The young lady here is someone to be watched; not only did she handle herself as an adult on the stage, but her vocal talents definitely imply she has a career in front of her.

The staging and set designs of the musical are definitely things that need to be pointed out. The set is beautiful and designed to be an overgrown garden. The trellises are covered in vines, and are positioned on wheels to make them easily movable, implying the maze path through the gardens. The design is by Anna Louizos and the Associate Choreographer, Trina Mills, and they both should definitely be given their due as they both

went above and beyond with their work in this production.

The Secret Garden is a true musical delight. Safe for the family, it will delight the younger generation of audience goers as much as it pleases the theatre veterans.

The music is as lush as the garden itself, with a few songs that will pleasantly stay in your head.

The Secret Garden is based on the 1911 children’s book by the same name, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett (author of Little Lord Fauntleroy). After several adaptations for the screen, it was adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman (book and lyrics), and Lucy Simon (music) – the sister of Carly Simon.

The musical opened in April 1991 and ran for over 700 performances. It was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning three, including a win for Daisy Eagan (Mary Lennox). Ms. Eagan became the record holder for the Youngest Tony Award winner, replacing her predecessor (the then 17-year-old) Liza Minnelli.

Imaginatively vulgar Free Fire a shotgun blast of kinetic insanity

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer FREE FIRE Now playing Justine (Brie Larson) has brought high-ranking I.R.A. members Chris (Cillian Murphy) and Frank (Michael Smiley) to a closed down factory in the middle of Boston nowhere in order to help facilitate a gun deal between them and nutty South African dealer Vernon (Sharlto Copley) and his quietly stoic partner Martin (Babou Ceesay). Standing between them all keeping the peace is the charming Ord (Armie Hammer), the friendly enforcer tasked with maintaining civility while also ensuring the deal runs smoothly and both sides walk away satisfied.

This proves impossible, however, after it is revealed that two men from each side of the deal, Chris’ driver (and Frank’s nephew) Stevo (Sam Riley) and Vernon’s henchman Harry (Jack Reynor), coincidentally meeting the night before, the bad blood brewing between them ready to boil over if no one is careful. But as potentially lethal as that might be, no one could have predicted either of them would be stupid enough to start something while transaction involving automatic weapons was going down. Yet that’s exactly the case, and soon everyone is hitting the dirt, diving for protection and pulling out their own guns in order to survive until the morning.

Bullets indeed fly in director Ben Wheatley’s (High-Rise, Sightseers) latest genre-bending free-for-all Free Fire, this raucous bit of surreal comedic mayhem and carnage a shotgun blast of violent insanity that’s an enjoyable hoot for every one of its rambunctious 90 minutes. Working once again with frequent co-writer and collaborator (and wife) Amy Jump, the filmmaker unleashes what has to be his most enter-

taining bit of madness yet. While this effort doesn’t reach the brilliant heights of the pair’s masterfully terrifying 2011 stunner Kill List, in its own unique way it’s nearly as satisfying, the balletic joy of watching events play themselves out to conclusion frankly wonderful.

Not that there’s a lot happening. The movie is all about a gun deal gone hopelessly wrong, the crux of the film’s running time consumed with how everyone attempts to navigate their way through this escalating madness as they crawl around the factory floor on their knees, hide behind cement blocks and lob verbal grenades back and forth. What makes it work is that Wheatley and Jump go out of their way to craft interesting characters, all of whom are completely different and thus stand out

in their own uniquely interesting way. Better, they allow room for their actors to craft role as they see best, even those with the shortest screen time allowed the freedom to make the most of each line of dialogue or bit of physical action thrown their way.

Seriously, everyone here is terrific. Riley, Reynor, Ceesay, Smiley, Noah Taylor and Patrick Bergin all have signature moments that brought a smile to my face, while Murphy and Copley prove to be sensational livewires who appear to be relishing every single second they’re allowed to prance and preen their way around Wheatley’s bullet-riddled playground. Larson doesn’t just hold her own as the film’s solitary female protagonist, she oftentimes dominates with a mixture of assertive resilience and bewildered incomprehension

as to how things could have devolved into carnivorous madness with such gruesome rapidity. As for Hammer, much like he did in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the actor showcases a beguiling comedic virtuosity that’s as charming as it is sexy, his cocksure preening a joyous bit of narcissistic machismo that’s giddily spellbinding.

Wheatley conducts with confidence, the filmmaker doing a fine job of making sure the viewer has a solid idea of the factory’s architectural layout, that way when things fall apart the audience has a good concept of where people can go to hide and how far they need to crawl in order to even attempt to make it back to the front door alive. The action fireworks, as explosive as they might be, are nothing compared to the ingeniously vulgar bits of repartee he and Jump have crafted for the ensemble to sink their collective teeth into. It’s as if the two are channeling Quentin Tarantino, Charles Lederer and Armando Iannucci as far as the dialogue is concerned, the rapid-fire nature of the four-letter based pitter-patter an abhorrently amusing delight.

It’s all pretty thin, everything playing out pretty much in real time with survival quickly becoming the objective, all other priorities falling to the wayside almost immediately. But that doesn’t make the movie any less enjoyable, the violent insanity of it all a kinetic fireball of mayhem and activity that’s a jovial, witty surprise that refuses to pull its punches and enjoys playing for keeps no matter what the cost.

More importantly, Wheatley builds things to what might just be the most satisfying final moment I’ve had the pleasure to witness so far this year, Free Fire a crackerjack maelstrom of creative madness that’s a full-throttle merry-go-round of machinegun excitement.

SGN EXCLUSIVE: Anime voice actor Vic Mignogna in attendance at Seattle Sakura-Con sets the record straight: “I am not the least bit homophobic”

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer Two weeks ago, the weekend of April 1416, was my second year in a row to attend Sakura-con, the annual Japanese Anime Convention at the Washington State Convention Center. I had no idea what type of story I would write until I met the hunky, blond haired and blue-eyed, voice actor, Vic Mignogna, 54, most known as the voice of Qrow in “RWBY’ and Matt in the “Digimon Adventure” series, as well as Pok’emon and Final Fantasy (the video game).

Mignogna also stars as Capt. James T. Kirk in the live-action web series, “Star Trek Continues.”

So it was quite a surprise when I Googled his name and found evidence of fans that are convinced that Vic Mignogna is a “homophobic Bible-thumping asshole” according to one thread. Having voiced a few Yaoi (boy on boy love) anime, Mignogna came under fire, when FUNimation Entertainment cast him to voice the character of Rin Matsuoka, (one those Yaoi genre characters) in “Free! Eternal Summer.” In fact, fans started an online petition on Change.org to get FUNimation to change their mind about their casting decision, about casting him in that role. According to the MCM blog, in a 2014 Q and A [***change to Q&A] session at the MCM Birmingham Comic Con, a fan asked Mignogna to respond to the online petition: “Because I refuse to sign Yaoi [animation stills] that means I’m openly homophobic?

Did you know that?” Mignogna continues, “Is that what that means to you? Because I don’t sign that? No, I’m not [homophobic] at all. I’m not the least bit. Are you looking in my eyes? I’m going to do my best to look in the eyes of everybody here. I am not the least bit homophobic.”

So, knowing this, I had a golden opportunity as a member of the LGBT press to approach Vic and ask him to sent the record “straight,” that is to clarify that situation and this was his response: “There is not one ounce of a shred of a molecule of any truth or substantiation to

help boost morale by writing dialogue for female characters in government produced short films designed to help the war effort.

Nicknamed “slop” by the male writers working on the same material, Catrin proves to be very good at this job, so much so screenwriter Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin) sends her out to the coast to interview a pair of sisters who, according to reports, courageously assisted in the massive evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk.

While the story doesn’t check out exactly as described, that doesn’t mean there still isn’t something there. Catrin sells the sisters’ story as a potential feature, and the War Department eats it up. She is immediately tasked to assist Tom in the writing of a script, one with strong female heroines and a mixture of comedy, drama, romance and action to keep viewers in Britain and America entertained. But it also needs to get them excited to be a part of the war effort and, in the case of the United States, hopefully convince them entering the fight against Nazi Germany is of the utmost imperative. Catrin gives herself over completely to the project, and even in the face of unimaginable personal hardship and war-

any of those things.

“There is – I can’t even … I can’t tell you what a joke that is to me! Well, let me just tell you that those kind of comments come from lonely kids desperate for some attention.

They’re looking to say something shocking or something CD about somebody that a lot of people know in the industry.

“I tell you what that comes from. I’m a Christian. Yes, I am an unapologetic Christian. I’m not ashamed of my faith. That’s who I am. Here’s the problem.

“A lot of people think that Christians hate gay people. That is not true, but a lot of people think that there are some morons out there, who call themselves Christians, who are anti-gay. Right? So these poor kids who post this garbage on line, this is their thinking. Vic is a Christian. Christians hate gays. So Vic hates gays. Vic’s homophobic because he’s a Christian. Not so. Not one ounce of truth to that. But that is the unfortunate leap they take.

“And their faulty reasoning? Because I’m a believer in Jesus, I must be homophobic. I am not. Not even close. I’m sorry they think that and I really wish they’d stop.”

people throughout his life including being a theater geek in school: “So I find myself going back to school and auditioning for school plays and then taking acting classes going to acting camps summer camps for acting, Drama, Theatre.

That took me into high school and college.

Continued acting. Continued auditioning for things. Performing any chance I got and anything again to just act.”

Mignogna then confessed to having a secret passion while attending a Christian school:

He’s unpretentious. There is an honesty of emotions. I like the music. And he kind of sings in the same vocal range that I do. I liked him. We got to K-Mart. He said, “You come in?” I said no, I’m gonna just sit in the car and listen to the music. He went back to campus and Christmas break was a few weeks after that. When I went home for Christmas break. What do you think I did?

I went to the music store and bought every Barry Manilow record I could find and I took them home and I listened and I fell in love with his music. He plays the piano. I didn’t play the piano. I don’t play anything … So imagine my elation at getting to meet him last year at a concert and tell him what a huge impact he had on my life.

Mignogna, from his work in the “Star Trek” web-series, has gotten to know all the original actors, from the openly Gay, George Takei to the late LGBT Ally, Leonard Nimoy. Mignogna also talked about his love and admiration for William Shatner: “So imagine my elation when I was asked to be represented by the man who represents William Shatner at these events [fan conventions]. So he started booking me into events with Bill and he and I have now done many events together we’ve had dinner together hung out together. We went sightseeing in Dubai together. And I can honestly say he’s a friend. And the little boy in me is over the moon that these people that made such a big impression on me, and literally determined in many cases, the trajectory of my life that I now know personally. George, Nichelle, Leonard I all knew at a first name basis, and I feel I have come full circle.”

Earlier, I observed his other interviews and what struck me was his openness and his personal experience with other LGBT

“A friend of mine invited me to go with him to K-Mart. He said “Hey, I’m going to K-Mart; want to go for a ride with me?” I said sure. So I got in the car. I’ll never forget _ yellow Camaro. And we got in the car and he put in a cassette tape. Actually, an eight-track tape of Barry Manilow. Now the school that I went to – this is an important point. The school that I went to was a very strict Christian school. We were not allowed to listen to music like Barry Manilow or secular rock, pop music So, it was a bit of a coup that he was doing this secretly in his car so as not to get in trouble.

ravaged tragedy she learns the most important thing about show business: no matter what the cost, the show must go on.

Based on the 2009 book Their Finest Hour and a Half by Lissa Evans, with a script by BBC television veteran Gaby Chiappe (“Vera,” “The Level”) and directed by award-winning filmmaker Lone Scherfig (An Education, Italian for Beginners), the World War II British home front drama Their Finest is incredibly entertaining. It is funny, charming, romantic and surprisingly emotional, the movie an honest examination of what it must have been like to be living in Britain during the war. Chiappe’s script, while never shattering convention, also doesn’t mince words or try to sugarcoat the situation, and while certain elements do stumble into melodramatic convenience, overall this is a bracing, deeply affecting effort all involved should be proud of.

For Scherfig, the film is a noticeable return to form for the Danish director after she stumbled with 2011’s dreadful One Day and had trouble maintaining a consistent tone with the nicely acted if dramatically inert 2014 drama The Riot Club. This is a smooth, confident film, one that transitions through its various narrative strands with ease. Scherfig never loses her focus and as such the central focus remains on Catrin and her personal journey no matter what

else might be going on within the story at the same time. It’s an impressive balancing act, the director managing to even soften the more cliché elements when they sneak their way in, making even the most coincidental twists of fate appear more authentic than they potentially could have been.

I do love how much is going on here.

There are a number of intriguing subplots, not the least of which is one involving sixtysomething actor Ambrose Hilliard (beautifully underplayed by Bill Nighy) who must come to grips with the fact he’s no longer an above-the-title star and is instead the veteran character guy called in to play the loveable drunken uncle who gets killed off before the third act. This is a delightful little arc, one that is surprisingly poignant, Hilliard’s path to being in Catrin and Tom’s film a pleasantly moving one. A number of little asides involving him, most notably one concerning his agent and best friend Sammy Smith (Eddie Marsan) and his driven, intelligently outspoken wife Sophie (Helen McCrory), are magnificent, while a final dialogue between the actor and one of his writers in the wake of senseless tragedy had me choking back a handful of tears.

Arterton is excellent, her chemistry with Claflin absolute perfection, the two actors disappearing into their respective roles. While the ins and outs of their rela-

tionship almost never surprise, that doesn’t make the blossoming of their friendship and emotional intimacy feel any less sublime. Arterton soars, delivering her best performance since Neil Jordan’s mesmerizing 2012 supernatural stunner Byzantium, Chiappe’s screenplay requiring the actress to jump through a number of varied emotive hoops as things progress. It’s a difficult balancing act, one she pulls off with mesmerizing grace, all of which allows for Catrin’s transformation to have real resonance, especially as things move towards their difficultly tragic conclusion.

What’s notable is that, even if everything doesn’t work out as perfectly or as nicely as the viewer hopes it will, the film never forgetting for a second that this is a world at war and happy endings aren’t always possible, the empowering euphoria of where things end up cannot be denied.

Scherfig allows the unspoken to speak volumes, the reaction of a pair of random moviegoers showcasing the vitality of the cinematic image in a fashion that is pure, distinct and imperative. Catrin finds herself, discovers who she is, and in this discovery tells us something about ourselves, our dreams and what we can accomplish in this world as long as we have the courage and the fortitude to put ourselves out there to potentially fail.

Lushly enigmatic Lost City worthy of discovery

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE LOST CITY OF Z Now playing In 1906, professional British soldier Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) is tasked by the Royal Geographical Society to lead an expedition into uncharted regions of the Amazon to map the Bolivian border and to trace the Rio Verde River to its source.

While his loving wife Nina (Sienna Miller) worries about what the years required to accomplish this task will mean to their growing family, both agree that coming home triumphant in this endeavor will change their fortunes substantially, and as opportunities go this could easily turn out to be a major one.

Returning two years later alongside his now trusted aide-de-camp and friend Henry Costin (Robert Pattinson), Fawcett is a national hero, traveling to a far corner of the globe many considered impassible.

A tough, tiring journey filled with dangers, this experience has changed this explorer’s life forever, his discovery of broken shards of ancient pottery and magnificently detailed carvings where neither should have existed leading him to believe a lost civilization exists someplace in the heart of the still uncharted Amazon jungle. Labeling this mythical city “Zed,” while many at the Royal Geographical Society scoff at his assertions, Fawcett is determined to return to this South American wilderness in order to prove his theory, and he’s hopeful Costin will choose to join him in this endeavor.

Based on the nonfiction best seller by author David Grann, with the eerie, illusory, metaphorical stunner The Lost City of Z writer/director James Gray (The Yards) has finally composed a motion picture worthy of masterpiece consideration. Beautifully raw, adventurously esoteric, this is a richly cinematic accomplishment that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as undisputed classics like Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line, David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia and Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. It is a movie that

CeCe McDonald, an African-American transwoman, survived an attack and served time in a men’s prison.

Laverne Cox (“Orange Is the New Black”) explores the roles that race, class, and gender played in CeCe’s case, which incited a nationwide “Free CeCe” protest movement.

Empowered by supporters, CeCe emerged as a celebrated advocate for issues of race and gender identity. Gender Justice League will co-present this film.

thentically realized dexterity of the actor’s accomplishments extraordinary.

The rest of the supporting cast, including Miller, the actress finally given a role equal to her talents for the first time in what feels like ages, is equally wonderful. Pattinson is a hoot, his almost silent portrait of the resiliently faithful Costin a shaggyeared bit of eccentric whimsy that’s as multilayered as it is naturalistic. Upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland makes a third act impression as Fawcett’s eldest son Jack who’s ready to follow in his father’s exploratory footsteps, while veteran character actors Ian McDiarmid and Angus Macfadyen are memorably fascinating as members of the Royal Geographical Society who both play a vital role in shaping this story’s continually surprising twists and turns. Best of all might be unknown Pedro Coello as Fawcett’s initial guide, Tadjui, his insights into what heading down the Rio Verde for the first time will eventually mean for the British explorer earth-shattering in their prescient clarity.

It could be claimed the fashion in which Gray has shaped his narrative might be too vague, and there are certainly moments where the transient observational nature of the film is fairly perplexing. But Fawcett’s story has no answer, no resolution, only the faintest outlines of an idea as to where he went, what happened to him and why it did, and as such the filmmaker remains true to that outcome no matter what the consequences for the audience might be. It’s an audacious bit of storytelling verisimilitude, Oscar-nominee Darius Khondji’s (Midnight in Paris) spellbinding camerawork and Christopher Spelman’s (The Immigrant) remarkable score adding just the right touch to hammer home all of the metaphorical madness the director is hinting at. The Lost City of Z is a rapturous achievement worthy of discovery, its enigmatic brilliance of a sublime majesty unique in and of itself.

floats through the psyche like it is the wispy beginnings of a dream on the verge of formation, ego and courage, faith and family, reason and insanity all melding into one harmonious, tragically euphoric operetta by the time things reach their stunningly ephemeral conclusion.

Covering nearly a quarter century of history, culminating in an unsolved mystery that will likely never be resolved, Gray’s latest is a character-driven sensation, made with confidence and care as it travels along the never-ending rivers of human perseverance where good judgment and common sense can oftentimes give way to flights of fancy born of braggadocio, chutzpah, courage and intelligence. Fawcett’s journey is a real life Heart of Darkness foray into the unknown, the explorer’s first journey into the Amazon coming only seven years after Joseph Conrad’s classic epic first saw publication. It’s this sort of through line that Gray follows to its logical, likely its only, conclusion, the elegiac yet hopeful tone of the final scenes heartbreaking in their triumphant, impenetrably tragic ambiguity.

Hunnam, a fine actor mostly known for his long stint headlining “Sons of Anarchy” and yet also one who has also never quite delivered on the potential hinted at early in his career in films as diverse as Nicho-

las Nickleby, Green Street Hooligans and Children of Men, delivers his best performance yet as Fawcett. His upright fortitude is a mask for a resilience and a drive born of frustration and despair resulting from a family name that’s not exactly held in high regard by those in positions of power. As such, he undertakes his hazardous initial Amazonian mission not because he wants to, but because he believes it to be the only way to redeem himself for sins committed in the line of duty by his father decades prior, Hunnam expertly conveying a number of varied emotions as he ponders accepting the challenge put before him by the Royal Geographical Society.

But it’s in the discovery where the performance soars. Not just as Fawcett’s eyes are opened to spectacular sights and sounds amidst the wilds of the jungle, but also at home, in the way he looks at his wife Nina after years apart or when he embraces his children, awed by their growth and maturation during the time he’s been away. Hunnam is masterful in these moments, the regret he oozes over not being there with his family for such long stretches is achingly coupled with a longing to return to the overgrown wilderness in order to pursue his dreams of finding Zed. It is the type of complex, multifaceted performance entire careers can be built upon, the simple, au-

ty pageant contestant whose final request upon her death is to be dressed as a different celebrity every night of her wake. Her best friend keeps the wake a secret from Trisha’s birth family, while flashbacks reveal a complex history of unspoken regrets, touching on each relationship Trisha fostered while she was alive, including a caring connection with her adopted daughter.

Looming transphobia won’t stop this chosen family from laughing and loving, even after Trisha’s last breath. Pride ASIA will co-present this film.

Translations brings some local flavor with the documentary FINDING KIM on May 14 at 2pm at the Northwest Film Forum. This visually striking documentary by Seattle director Aaron Bear follows Kim’s search for self-acceptance through transition from female to male after a lifetime of coming to terms with drug addiction and isolation. Appearances by major personalities and LGBTQ activists include Carmen Carrera (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”), Buck Angel (MR. ANGEL, Translations 2014), Dr. Tony Mangubat (a local surgeon specializing in transgender procedures), Calpernia Addams, and Dan Savage. Local director, Samuel Shanahoy, will be at the screening of the film feature film, SO LONG SUBURBIA, on Saturday, May 6 at 7pm at the Northwest Film Forum. When Sadie’s mom gives her a one-year transit pass her whole world opens up. Sadie is befriended by Miami and her clique of queers and misfits.

TEACH BY EXAMPLE on Saturday, May 6 at 2pm at the Northwest Film Forum is a program of short films that explore how trans people provide mentorship to a variety of people in their lives.

Musicians add two unique events to the festival. Rae Spoon (GENDER FAILURE, Translations 2013) and Clyde Petersen (TORREY PINES, Twist 2016) host an hour of music, drawing comics, and chill vibes on Tuesday, May 9 at 6pm at 12th Avenue Arts (1620 12th Ave). And Joe Stevens with special guest Ben Wallace, subjects of the film REAL BOY, perform a onenight only concert on Saturday, May 13 at 9:30pm at the Northwest Film Forum. This affecting documentary follows trans teen, Bennett, as he navigates the ups and downs of his journey to find his voice, including sobriety and patience as his mother weathers his transition, while reaching for the promise of a new life.

Translations is offering a program “NO DUMB QUESTIONS: HOW TO BE A TRANS ALLY” specifically for allies and

folks who are new to the transgender community on Friday, May 5 at 6pm at the Seattle Public Library Capitol Hill Branch (425 Harvard Ave E). With a screening of the film NO DUMB QUESTIONS followed by a brief introduction to transgender concepts and an open discussion led by Translations film festival director Sam Berliner this is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to support our community.

There are a number of free and discounted screenings at this year’s festival.

Disneynature’s Born in China a kid-friendly documentary

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BORN IN CHINA Now playing Born in China is Disneynature’s latest continuation of the Disney brand of True Life Adventures that follows quite easily in the footsteps of a number of the many Earth Day releases that have preceded it, including Monkey Kingdom, Bears, African Cats and Chimpanzee. In this iteration, director Lu Chuan (City of Life and Death) doesn’t do anything to break out of the mold established by all the previous features (save Oceans, that Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud helmed stunner still the reigning Disneynature champion), keeping things as childlike as possible as he tells the three varying stories at the heart of this particular tale.

Narrated by John Krasinski in the same sort of unforced, kid-friendly style many of those like Tim Allen (Chimpanzee) or Tina Fey (Monkey Kingdom) have utilized before him, here we meet a panda and her baby in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in the Sichuan Province, a family of golden snub-nosed monkeys in the Hubei Shennongjia National Nature Reserve near the Yangtze River, four-legged chiru in the Kekexili National Nature Reserve making their annual trek into isolation to give birth to their calves and the red-crowned cranes as they soar between the Heilongjiang Zhalong National Nature Reserve and the Jiangsu Yancheng National Nature Reserve. above sea level in the Qinghai province on the northeast rim of the Tibetan plateau, the film introduces the audience to the seldom seen snow leopard, a mother and her two cubs attempting to survive their year in one of the most perilous and barren places on the face of the Earth.

Starting in Autumn, moving forward from there into Winter, Spring and Summer, Chuan and his team chronicle each animal in their habitat as parents care for their various young under a wide variety of environmental conditions. We see our baby panda learn to climb trees, a two-year-old golden snub-nosed monkey decide whether he’ll remain part of a pack or attempt to make it in the jungle alone and female chiru circle together as a thunderous herd as a way to protect their young from predators. Most importantly, we keep tabs on our

mother snow leopard as she attempts the impossible to get food for her hungry children, putting herself in extreme danger in order to hopefully ensure their survival.

It’s all beautifully photographed and shot, and Chuan transitions between his various stories rather seamlessly, veteran nature documentary editor Matthew Meech (“Planet Earth II”) doing a fine job navigating through the footage in order to pull out an assortment of essential moments worthy of a look. But, other than the fate of that snow leopard and her cubs, there’s not a lot in the way of drama to anything that transpires, and as beautiful as it all is it isn’t like the filmmakers are attempting to dig all that deep. I can’t exactly say that I learned a heck of a lot about these creatures other than that their various survival skills are all suitably impressive, and while Disney once

again saddles all their primary characters with a bunch of cutesy names like Ya Ya, Mei Mei, Tao Tao and Dawa, the studio’s fear of showcasing anything that could be challenging or difficult is fairly obvious.

This is actually an important point because, for the first time that I can recall, a main story arc in one of these Disneynature offerings does not have anything close to a traditional happy ending. And yet, when things go bad for this animal, when danger rears its ugly head and refuses to go quietly into the goodnight, it’s almost as if Chuan or the producers have no idea how to talk about or showcase these moments. While I applaud the fact the film does not sugarcoat what happens, its refusal to put what transpires into context, to just leave things be with no comment whatsoever, it frankly just feels wrong, and I can only imagine the flood of questions parents are going to be asked about it by their pint-sized companions after they exit the theatre.

Still, I do love the fact that Disney keeps bringing these documentaries to the screen each April, and the fact they’ve designed them so clearly to appeal to children, and to get them excited about learning more about the natural world is certainly commendable. On that level, Born in China fits into the Disneynature canon nicely, and while I personally wasn’t blown away by the film, that doesn’t mean I still don’t hope parents take their little ones out to see it. This is a perfectly nice nature documentary that deserves its theatrical showcase, and that’s really all there is to say.

Sexually adventurous Mouth dramatically underwhelming

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BELOW HER MOUTH Now playing Below Her Mouth is one of those films I’d almost rather not review if I could get away with it. Much like she hinted at with her 2015 revenge-thriller 88, actor-turneddirector April Mullen continues to showcase real promise behind the camera, her sense of style, pacing and narrative urgency impressive. The movie also thrusts into the spotlight an almost all-female crew as far as the major behind-the-scenes technicians are concerned, Maya Bankovic’s impressively sweat-drenched cinematography, Michelle Szemberg’s kinetically enthralling editing and Faye Mullen’s authentically expressive production design all worthy of mention. Then there are the powerhouse performances from the two primary stars, familiar character actor Natalie Krill and Swedish supermodel Erika Linder anchoring things with a graceful urgency that’s naturalistic and pure.

So what’s the problem? I just don’t think the movie works. Not as a romance. Not as a drama. While Stephanie Fabrizi’s script means well, in some ways feeling like a lesbian reworking of Louis Malle’s 1992 erotic classic Damage, as both pictures deal with the nature of instant romantic and sexual longing between strangers, most of what transpires is far too contrived and facile to ever pass as authentic. These aren’t characters, they’re archetypes going through the motions of passing as three-dimensional human beings, thus caring about what is happening to any of them at any given mo-

ment proves to be frustratingly impossible.

It’s a fairly standard setup. Fashion editor Jasmine (Krill), engaged to marry the handsome Rile (Sebastian Pigott), finds herself strangely drawn to the mysterious Dallas (Erika Linder), a roofer working on the house next door to her own. After an encounter at a predominately lesbian nightclub, the two women give into their mutual attraction, entering into a torrid affair that could easily spiral out of control. Torn between this powerful, confidently sexual woman who has suddenly entered into her life and the quiet, reservedly masculine everyman she was planning to spend the rest of her life with, Jasmine isn’t sure what to do, things for her playing out in a manner that’s as confusing as it is complicated.

est Color, the major selling point as far as this film is concerned is going to be the high volume of explicit sex scenes, some of which might not be simulated. Unlike that Cannes Film Festival prizewinner, however, there is no complexity to the overarching scenario in this film, the characters themselves thinly conceived caricatures who aren’t particularly easy to relate to. More, the third act shenanigans involving Rile do not work, the man’s actions being what they are more to add heated conflict to a story solely for the sake of putting it there, this hint of violent reprisal never coming from a place of value or authenticity.

What’s annoying is that Mullen’s delicate handling of things is impressive, the early passages where she visually develops the growing attraction between Jasmine and Dallas dripping in passionate longing. Her

framing of certain sequences reminding me of the couplings in Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s Bound and Patricia Rozema’s When Night Is Falling, yet they also held their own distinctively idiosyncratic intensity I found undeniably captivating. But she shows no ability to soften or make worthwhile any of the more melodramatic and ponderous plot elements, and while things continually look terrific the emotional components barely have any pulse whatsoever.

Don’t blame either Krill or Linder. Both actresses give themselves over completely to the material, doing all that is asked of them and more. The former has a winsome gracefulness that’s enchanting, while the latter oozes carnivorous sensuality that’s undeniably palpable. The two of them together are a dynamic pair, and it’s easy to become enthralled by them, each woman doing what she can to make her respective character come alive in ways the script itself barely hints at.

I wish I felt differently about Below Her Mouth. It pains me to extol so many of its virtues yet in the same breath state I don’t think it’s all that worthwhile as cinematic entertainment. The filmmakers are attempting something great here, and I applaud the efforts of Mullen and her talented crew on a number of levels. But I just didn’t care what happened to either Jasmine or Dallas, wasn’t interested in seeing whether or not their passionate affair was going to lead someplace other than tragic regret, wasn’t curious to know if they’d end up together. This movie, for all its merits, did not work for me, and other than being a pretty, sexually adventurous calling card for the director, her creative team and the actresses at the center of the drama, I’m not sure there’s a lot more to talk about.

Soapy romantic epic The Promise fails to deliver

meet back up, survive a handful of lethal skirmishes and ultimately end up part of a bloody siege atop a mountain. Fictional and historical events collide, these three principal characters circulating in and out of the story, navigating their own personal entanglements as war rages all around them.

It’s hard to put into a few words just how dreadfully melodramatic and dull all of this becomes, as The Promise is as impressively mounted a production (a reported $100-million was spent) as anything of a similar ilk is likely to be released this year.

George has brought in ace cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe (The Others, Warm Bodies), Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, Cold Mountain), crack editor Steven Rosenblum (Braveheart, Blood Diamond) and a whole slew of talented craftspeople to give his film the epic scale he is aiming for. There are also a number of notable members of the supporting cast who pop in at key mo-

ments to deliver an impassioned speech or make threatening declarations, Rade Serbedzija, Jean Reno and James Cromwell the most familiar of these faces.

But none of it matters. Unlike classic motion pictures like Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago or The English Patient, there’s no room here for the story to breathe and evolve. Everything during the second hour is rushed, causing the majority of what transpires to feel strangely inauthentic. Other than a scene where Mikael and Chris stumble upon a mass slaughter of innocents on the shores of a quietly trickling river, there’s very little during this stretch that strums the emotional heartstrings.

Even the climactic assault by the Turkish army against Armenian survivors has trouble generating anything that could be construed as a pulse, making the question as to whether our heroes will survive or valiantly perish protecting others ones I had precious little interest in learning the answer to.

It does not help that the Mikael-AnaChris love triangle is inelegantly shoehorned into all this bloodshed and inhumanity. As good as Isaac, Le Bon and Bale are the dialogue they’re asked to spout and emotions they’re tasked with displaying are so turgid and cloying this romantic pabulum smothers all it comes in contact with suffocating determination that would be impressive if it weren’t so gosh darn insulting to the viewer’s intelligence. Because there’s no time for these three to develop as impassioned characters, all this soap opera tedium does is devalue the real human catastrophe unspooling alongside it, and considering the Armenian genocide remains one of the more underreported and unexplored tragedies of the past century this is as unfortunate a turn of events as any that could have transpired. The Promise never delivers on its potential, this infuriating wannabe epic failing to make the kind of long-lasting impression all involved in its production clearly hoped it would.

THE PROMISE Now playing Terry George’s (Hotel Rwanda, Reservation Road) war-torn epic historical romance The Promise is an early contender for being one of 2017’s most frustrating and disappointing films. Set during the 1915 Armenian Genocide, an unspeakably horrifying event the Turkish government to this day still refuses to acknowledge, the movie reduces this unimaginable tragedy to nothing more than a blood-soaked foundation to build a sappy, underdeveloped love triangle around. Oozing with potential, featuring great performances from Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon, Christian Bale and charismatic newcomer Marwan Kenzari, the movie loses its footing about halfway through and never recovers, everything building with such melodramatically stilted tediousness the overall feeling I was left with when it was over was one of stupefied indifference.

After entering into an arranged marriage agreement with local girl Maral (Angela Sarafyan), Mikael Boghosian (Isaac) takes the 400 gold coin dowry given to him by the woman’s father and leaves his small Armenian village for the big city wonders of Constantinople in hopes of attending medical school. He quickly makes friends with Emre Ogan (Kenzari), the rich and influential playboy son of a powerful Turkish general. Through him, he also runs into American journalist Chris Myers (Bale) and his beautiful French-Armenian collaborator Ana Khesarian (Le Bon), the latter of whom just so happens to also be the tutor to the daughters of Mikael’s rug merchant uncle.

Before anyone can get too settled, Turkey joins forces with Germany as World War I gets underway. Additionally, the ruling Turks begin to systematically throw

able-bodied male Armenians into labor camps while also slowly eradicating many of their villages located throughout the country. Forced relocation escalates to mass slaughter, Mikael battling impossible odds to return home to make sure his parents (Shohreh Aghdashloo, Kevork Malikyan), as well as his fiancé Maral, whom he no longer loves but still feels honorbound to marry, are all still alive.

There’s plenty more, George and cowriter Robin Swicord (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) stuffing so much material inside the movie’s second hour the sheer volume of it is overwhelming. Mikael gets interred into one of the labor camps, bonds with fellow laborer Garin (Tom Hollander) and finally escapes thanks in large part to the man’s heroic sacrifice. Chris and Ana dodge Turkish authorities and soldiers as they make their way to a Red Cross mission filled with orphans needing to be smuggled out of the country. All three will eventually
