FAR-RIGHT EXTREMIST ON BALLOT FOR CONGRESS IN SW WASHINGTON Joe Kent knocks out Herrera Beutler, but both trail Democrat

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer Far-right extremist Joe Kent will be on the ballot for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District in November. He will face Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez in the November election. In Washington state’s top-two primary system, the top two vote getters advance to the general election regardless of their party affiliation. Perez came in first in the primary count with 31% of the total, while Kent edged out incumbent Jamie Herrera Beutler with 22.74% to her 22.31%.

The event began in 2003 at Neighbours Nightclub, when founder Joe Torres sought to turn his birthday into a communitycentered night of fun and fundraising for everyone to enjoy. Torres, who moved to

Seattle in his teens, spoke to the SGN about his inspiration and motives for starting the LEO Foundation, citing the found family he discovered after arriving to the city. “My friends... became my family when I moved up to Seattle. I was at a point in my life where I was working a lot, and I felt like I needed to give back.”

The call center is a product of the state DOH’s efforts to inform Washingtonians and destigmatize MPV through readily available resources.

“As we navigate the MPV outbreak in Washington state, we cannot underestimate the need for our community members to address their questions and concerns,” said WA Secretary of Health Dr. Umair Shah. Through an ongoing partnership with Washington 211, callers can get questions answered about MPV risk factors, vaccine
