Burien Pride crowd exceeds expectations, sees over 3,000 guests in first year $8,000 donated to local charities Organizers will march in the July 4 Burien Independence Day Parade with giant rainbow flag BURIEN, WA – Supporters of Burien’s first-ever Pride celebration came out in droves to celebrate at Burien Town Square Park on Saturday, June 3. More than 3,000 guests attended the 12-hour Pride celebration, which included kid-family programming, performances by ’80s cover band Aqua-Nets, Ms. Donnatella Howe and Tru St. James, and a beer garden in the middle of the Square.

“It’s impossible not to dance when the Aqua-Nets take the stage,” said Laurel Humphrey, Burien Pride committee member.

Organizers say they expected approximately 300-500 attendees, but were pleasantly surprised by the crowd size that continued to swell throughout the day’s programming and into the evening’s performances.

“We are so pleased that Burien residents and our neighbors embraced us for our first-ever Burien Pride celebration,” stated Burien Pride committee member Debra George. “The support is there and businesses, organizations and community partners are already signing up to sponsor our event next year. This annual event is sure to continue to grow in a positive way for years to come, and we thank you.”

Committee members invite Burien Pride – https://www.burienpride.com/ – supporters near and far to celebrate 4th of July by walking with them in the Burien Independence Day Parade, now in its 96th year. The parade begins at 3pm and runs approximately two hours. More information on the event is located on the Discover Burien website – http://www.discoverburien.org/events/event/independence-day-parade/ and contingency information can be found on Burien Pride’s Facebook event page – https://www.facebook.com/ events/392691617792855/ Sponsors of Burien Pride included Gay City, BECU, Umpqua Bank, Burien Actors Theater, Burien Nursing and Rehabilita-

tion, and South Seattle Community College. Family-friendly programming ran from 10am to 10pm with FREE admission to the public. Proceeds from the event benefited Burien C.A.R.E.S., a local Burien animal non-profit organization, and Seattle LGBT youth program Camp Ten Trees (a total of $4,000 was donated to each organization).

Additional sponsors included: B-Town Blog, Seattle Women’s Pride, The Seattle Lesbian, Pit Stop Bottle Shop, RES Graphics, The Aqua-Nets, and The Black Zia Cantina.

Seattle Women’s Pride 2017 kicked off National LGBT Pride Month by bringing in two Brooklyn based bands – Parlor Walls and Oracle Room – DJ Kristina Childs and a host of awards to local businesses. The event also raised $500 for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) by donating $5 from every VIP ticket to the respected organization.

Seattle Women’s Pride 2017 took place at Q Nightclub in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood on Saturday, June 17 from 5:30-9:30pm. More than 200 guests attended the event, along with another 49 in memoriam.

“We wanted to celebrate and honor the victims of the Pulse massacre by having them with us for Seattle Women’s Pride this year,” Seattle Women’s Pride Producer Sarah Toce explained. “We coordinated with the Cal Anderson Pulse vigil organizers to carry their legacies throughout Seattle Pride month. Seattle Women’s Pride was the first event post-vigil, so we posted their photos inside the club in hopes that they could finally finish that last dance.”

LGBTQ Pride 2017: Let’s unite to fight the right Celebrate the victories and fight like hell to defend them by the Freedom Socialist Party

When arch-conservative Anita Bryant crusaded against gay rights in the 1970s, the queer community fought back. Not every battle was won, but the stage was set across the U.S. for increasing rights.

When Ronald Reagan maintained a deadly silence in the early 1980s as the AIDS/HIV crisis escalated, with his fascist-loving communications director, Pat Buchanan, calling AIDS “nature’s revenge on gay men,” the LGBTQ community Acted Up. When white supremacists with an ugly homophobic, multi-issue agenda declared their intention to turn the Northwest into an Aryan Homeland, also in the Reagan/ Bush years, leaders in the Seattle lesbian and gay community became key to the success of the United Front Against Fascism, alongside Black, feminist, socialist, and union activists. Together they mobilized a movement that met the skinheads and KKK wherever they gathered publicly.

Now the hard right is once again in the White House and on the streets of our country.

Today the country needs an outpouring of many radical united fronts that live by the slogan “An injury to one is an injury to all!”

Total liberation, nothing less!

LGBTQ people have resisted oppression at least since the witch hunts of the 15th century. We are not about to have our lavender lives suffocated now! Everything won with blood, sweat and sacrifice over the past 50 years is on the line.

To keep advancing, we will stand up for ourselves and for the workers making unlivable wages and for the immigrants maligned, harassed and deported – who are also us! We will stand up for all our sister and brother “outsiders.” We will rely on our own ability, not politicians, to mobilize the forces to fight for justice and freedom for all. We will be a battalion in the army of the oppressed, confident in the knowledge that the future belongs to the multi-hued international working class. We will not be pushed back into the closet. Instead, we will finish the revolution for human liberation we started.
