Celebrating 41 Years!

Seattle Men’s Chorus to present empowering concert “Born This Way” April 1 & 2

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The Seattle Men’s Chorus will be in a Lady GaGa state of mind when it presents “Born This Way” at McCaw Hall on April 1 and 2. Inspired by the pop icon’s 2011 hit single, the show hopes to inspire and unify LGBTQ youth and other members of the community by sending a powerful message that “there’s nothing wrong with loving who you are,” as the song’s lyrics state. Under the helm of Artistic Director Paul Caldwell, the chorus will perform music by Lady GaGa, Cyndi Lauper, Rufus Wainwright, Pink and Transgender composer Mari Esabel Valverde in the production. The innovative multimedia concert will also feature singers and audience members sharing uplifting stories, as well as the dreams and challenges that are unique to LGBTQ youth. The April 1 performance will be staged at 8pm, while the April 2 presentation is a matinee show at 2pm. Through the Seattle Men’s Chorus’ Youth Ticket Outreach Program, hundreds of students and youth from throughout the Northwest will be given complimentary admission to attend. Additionally, a free children’s concert on April 1 (2pm), also at McCaw Hall, will include an hour of non-stop music with familiar and classic songs for all ages. Silly costumes, laughter and audience participation are part of the fun. Tickets to the children’s concert are free, but advance online reservations are recommended and can be made at SeattleChoruses.org. Ballard High Thespian Troupe check to Lifelong

Representative of the Ballard High Thespian Troupe presented a check to Lifelong on March 7th in the amount of $5,441.38, which was generated by their World AIDS Day benefit Rent concerts. Lifelong Deputy Director, Paul, graciously gave a tour of the Chicken Soup Brigade facility to explain the extensive services Lifelong provides to clients living with HIV/AIDS. Thank you, Lifelong, for the important work you do in our community!

however, a choreographer and dancer deeply engaged in the world of New York theater arts and of African American dance performance. Her mother, Denise Jefferson, directs the Alvin Ailey School of dance, so it’s no wonder Francesca developed into a choreographer of national and international renown. The audience loved this dance that had some amazing “Hey! Do that again!” moments. For me it was disjointed and kaleidoscopic, its meaning somewhat obscure. As it ended again in silence I had a chance to appreciate the intensity and commitment of the dancers who are more exposed when music is absent.

continued from cover decorations and scarlet carpet, ornamental chandeliers and winding staircases framed DTH’s intricate program of classic and modern choreography with appropriate style and elegance. The packed audience was one of the most diverse groups of Seattleites you can imagine – young, old, every gender, every race – and all excited. Entire classes of students lined up in front of the stage, in the lobby, and on the sweeping staircase to have their pictures taken together – testament to the effort DTH makes to connect with the community in general and young people in particular as they tour the nation.

The company, now celebrating its 47th anniversary, was founded by the first African American male ballet dancer to rise to stardom – New York City Ballet’s Arthur Mitchell. In the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, Mitchell decided to give his life to making ballet and professional dance available to those who were denied access to training and performance opportunities because of their race.

As a result, DTH is not only an accomplished company that brings dance to communities around the country, but it is also a school for young dancers in Harlem that provides a professional pathway for dancers of color to enter the mainstream of the arts in America. Its community engagement program also enables young people who have never seen professional dance to encounter this great art for the first time, and to imagine that anyone can grow up to be a ballet dancer. It’s a wonderful company with a noble cause that enriches everyone who sees it. I was certainly enriched by the long, ambitious program that the sixteenmember company performed in four sections with two intermissions. Here are the dances in order of performance: “New Bach” choreographed by Robert Garland to Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor Garland, a former DTH principal dancer, was trained in dance and choreography by Arthur Mitchell, which makes him a choreographic grandson of the great George Balanchine. That relationship was on full display in this beautifully arranged and executed dance in three movements.

We saw the expert movement of dancers through patterns across the stage, the sassy cocked hip and high kicks Mr. B. introduced for Mitchell’s own partners, and the speed and precision that characterizes this era of choreography. Garland’s own personality shone through as the dancers snapped their fingers and shook their shoulders at key moments in an otherwise classic work.

by Santos, whose slow, disciplined movement in a wine-colored velvet costume showed the Spanish dance form to perfection. A chaconne is a slow court dance that was brought to baroque Spain via the Moors.

It conjures up a lost world of nobility, style, and self-reflection in its deliberate patterns of movement and gesture. While I tried to take precise notes as this gorgeous dance unspooled, I found myself writing “I adore this choreography!” and “I could watch this dancer all night!” Some gestures are fixed in my mind – a frozen arabesque slowly sinking, rising, and sinking again on twelve excruciatingly prolonged chords – which show the introspection and control of this beautiful dance. It was simply fabulous and per-

I’m not a fan of silent dancing. It always makes me wonder if something is amiss, which I think is the point of Harper’s dance about immigrants and refugees seeking a new life. If I hadn’t read the program notes, however, I would not have been able to discern this idea from the dance itself, or from the sparkly costumes that seemed to contradict the narrative suggested in the program.

Fortunately the music began about five minutes in – John Adam’s string quartet, played live by the Seattle Symphony Quartet.

It’s always great to see dance performed to live music, and this percussive, busy work was not an easy piece to play. It was an excellent choice by Francesca Harper,

“Coming Together” choreographed by Nacho Duarto, music by Frederic Rzewski José Limón is surely a great influence on Duarto, whose over-the-head arm movements and flexible placement of the torso characterizes groups of dancers moving across the stage like a flowing alphabet.

Their shared subject matter of the individual search for meaning in a world of war and revolution, and the dilemma of communities caught in hard times, is expressed in a body of work for which both choreographers are justly known. To see a Limón work on the same program as Duarto was a great choice for those of us interested in the continuity and renewal of dance tradition.

The Doris Humphrey-José Limón technique on display in Duarto’s work shows both deep understanding and a brave renewal of a core tradition in modern dance.

This final presentation of the evening shows Duarto at his best – big, dramatic gestures, expert control over group movement, new inventions of familiar patterns.

“Coming Together” was set to a repeated text of Attica prisoner and war protester Sam Melville, whose optimistic description of his health and hopes drives this excited, joyful dance despite the dramatic irony of a disastrous future (as those who remember the Attica riots will recall). A percussive piano background to the spoken word fueled the pin-wheeling arms, screwdriver pirouettes, and deep fifth position poses that rivet the audience from the beginning. I loved the alternating rhythm of groups racing in by threes, establishing a pattern, racing out again for the next group to race in and perform a variation on the previous movement. The settings were adjunct to the drama without stealing the show, though three women dancing in flowing gowns in front of a gold lamé curtain was more than spectacular. The final sequence of six dancers in alternating rows with the men circling under the upraised arms of the women was startling and satisfying in a way only dance can be when it continues an already thrilling, and deeply meaningful, dance tradition.

ACT Theatre’s Tribes explores deaf culture

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer TRIBES ACT THEATRE Through March 26 Deaf culture gets a hearing (oh, oof) in ACT Theatre’s newest play, Tribes, by Nina Raine. The production is a solid one, with all six actors taking strong positions as well-constructed characters with vivid points of view.

Directed in the round by John Langs, a busy but effective homey set by Shawn Ketchum Johnson greets the audience as the home of Christopher and Beth (Frank Corrado and Anne Allgood) who still live with their three adult children, Daniel, Ruth, and Billy (Adam Standley, Kjerstine Rose Anderson, and Joshua Castille).

It’s not terribly clear why these adults live with their parents, but they seem to all accept it as normal. The family loves to argue fiercely, led by Christopher and his harsh statements that provoke emotional responses. Corrado does a vigorous job of portraying the father that you love to hate. Allgood’s long-suffering, exasperated Beth generally plays referee as the “children” still squabble.

Daniel is straining to finish a PhD and Ruth is trying to become an opera singer.

Standley has to manage a complicated arc for a very emotional character who is portrayed as being damaged by his father’s vitriol and a recent break-up with an important girlfriend. Anderson does a good clueless younger sister who is trying to figure out who she is.

The one member who doesn’t argue is Billy. He doesn’t get to participate in the swirling words because he is deaf and no one helps him keep up with what is happening. In fact, none of them even look like they try to, and when he tries to catch the

conversation and ask what is happening, he is met with “nothing” more often than not.

No one signs.

It turns out that this is a conscious “choice” for this family, made in order to somehow force Billy to be able to integrate into the hearing world. And Billy is a great lip reader. But the greatest lip reader can’t read when someone’s back is turned to him.

We finally are allowed to get to know Billy when he meets Sylvia (Lindsay W. Evans) at a party. It turns out that it’s a “deaf” party and he doesn’t know how to sign and is leaving in a bit of disgust at how out of place he feels. Sylvia, too, is leaving, since her boyfriend has apparently pissed her off. Evans gets to take the air out of the argumentative family and bring a leavening perspective. She is very charming as Sylvia.

It takes Sylvia a bit to understand that

Billy is deaf but doesn’t sign. Sylvia is hearing, but has a degenerative condition that will cause her to lose her hearing entirely very soon, and has grown up with deaf parents and signing her whole life. She’s got a diametrically opposite experience to Billy’s.

Outside his family, Billy is also charming and sexy and articulate. Castille is a very attractive actor who impresses with his clear diction and even a British accent.

It’s fairly clear that Billy has adopted his family’s antipathy toward “deaf culture” as being less than where deaf people pretend to be as able as hearing people – when the family considers it a handicap.

A number of plays have this theme of deaf versus hearing, and a kind of educational component that deaf folk can have a culture and be proud of it and celebrate their difference. Azeotrope produced one

recently, Sound, that also had this conflict at its core. For many hearing folk, it’s an … ear-opening experience.

However, this script leaves an awful lot unexplained or underdeveloped. The family antipathy doesn’t seem to come from a particular experience or incident, it just “is”. The parents are very educated, but having a deaf child did not apparently provoke them into exploring what the options were when their baby was born. Would a caring, loving, upper middle class family just decide they dislike “deaf culture” without exploring it, and that’s it?

There is a symbiotic relationship at stake between Daniel and Billy that also is unexplored but present. It takes on increasing urgency as the play continues. Again, a potent possibility for the script to explore and where it stays silent.

The production and the cast are great.

There are times when subtitles are used when signing, so not much is missed. ACT Theatre finished installing its new Figaro Closed Captioning System to enhance the hard-of-hearing experience for audience members in time for this production. So, the theater also upped its game, here.

Raine created some great characters and solid dialogue. She somehow didn’t finish fleshing out the world, though. There are realizations unrecognized and stakes not described. By the end, you may wish another 10 or 15 minutes had been added for depth and understanding.

Yankee Pickney a heart-opening walk to understanding ments of tragedy and quickly returns to poking fun at her young self through diary readings from the small, but preternaturally intelligent girl that she was. The music choices help her set the time, as well.

Some of her presentation becomes spoken word and movement moments, adding another element to the piece. These are effective and affecting. Òsanyìn’s message is a complex one involving race and racial consciousness, and the proliferation of modern attacks by law enforcement on now-familiar nationallyknown names. She uses projections and bits of film to make points, but at the start of the piece says that she only does so up to a point. Her point – of stopping – is where it gets to triggering for her. She invites the audience to make itself safe, leave the room if you need to, and take care of yourself.

This is kind, and there is no way to anticipate who will need that permission.

However, she is true to her word and skirts most of the darkest images or descriptions.

The audience is aware that it is there.

The arc of the story is clear. At the beginning, she is trapped by her emotions. As she tells the story, there is a catharsis and by the end, she is able to become untrapped.

It’s a simple device. As she is released, we are released with her.

BY JÉHAN ÒSANYÌN THEATER SCHMEATER Through April 1 A “yankee pickney” is translated, in this solo show by Jéhan Òsanyìn, as “Americanized child.” Òsanyìn occasionally translates Jamaican patois to help the audience understand. Yankee Pickney is performing at Theater Schmeater, and it is a brisk 70-minute heart-opening walk through Òsanyìn’s life.

Solo autobiographical productions are hard to write about because you should gain the information about the story as you watch and not have someone tell you all the “spoilers” in a review. Òsanyìn’s story is unique and interesting. You are entirely encouraged to attend and hear her story. Òsanyìn understands theatrical presentation and how to play with it. She begins by offering tea to her audience and takes time to help everyone become comfortable.

Once she starts the story, she palpably creates “her home” on stage – with her Goldendoodle at her side – and explores “kinds” of blackness.

She is aware, as we likely are not, that as a Jamaican, she’s not “American black” but is made to inhabit that box by stereotypical association. Even when she tells a story of visiting Africa, when they discover that she doesn’t speak the various African languages, those in countries she visits change their behaviors, dubbing her “American.”

Exploring a theme of “Arrivals,” all selections will give audiences the opportunity to satisfy their wanderlust through international cinematic travel to France, the Netherlands, Greece, Israel and beyond. Closing night will bring guests back home with the documentary Big Sonia, from Seattlebased award-winning filmmakers Leah Warshawski and Todd Soliday.

The Seattle Jewish Film Festival (SJFF), which is marking its 22nd year as one of the longest-running film festivals in the region, is an important part of Seattle’s cultural make up and offers a diverse spectrum of films that welcomes everyone aboard.

“The Seattle Jewish FiIm Festival is the largest Jewish event in the Pacific Northwest and an important arts and culture destination for diverse arts-loving audiences.

While the ‘destination’ is the festival, people will be transported and transformed through cinema. Audiences should get ready to ‘fasten their seat belts’ and prepare for exhilaration and reconnection, says Festival Director Pamela Lavitt. “In keeping with our mission, we’re building bridges and forging connections with unique and rarely seen films. It’s like we are all going on vacation somewhere exotic and soulfilling together!”

The first to arrive will be Ori Sivan’s Harmonia, opening the festival on Saturday, March 25th at AMC Pacific Place 11.

The Jerusalem Philharmonic Orchestra is the romantic setting for this modern talove triangle of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar.

Lead actor Alon Aboutboul will attend.

Audiences will be in for a trip at the much-loved Matzoh Momma Sunday

Brunch, which includes a screening of The Last Laugh on March 26 at AMC Pacific Place 11. Exploring the question “Can the Holocaust be funny?” top comedians (Mel Brooks, Sarah Silverman, Judy Gold) and Holocaust survivors weigh in with a wide range of answers, illustrated by archival footage and movie clips. The Brunch begins at 9:30am at AMC Pacific Place 11, and will be hosted by Matzoh Momma Catering and accompanied by a live musical performance from perennial favorites The Klez Katz! The film begins at 10:45am. A special event ticket provides entry to the Brunch and film, and film-only tickets can also be purchased.

Another highlight will be an advance screening of The Zookeeper’s Wife, directed by Niki Caro and starring two-time Academy Award® nominee Jessica Chastain. The film tells the real-life story of a working wife and mother (Chastain) who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. It will show Sunday, March 26 at 5:15pm at AMC Pacific Place 11.

One beloved highlight of the festival is the Gay Gezunt! featuring Who’s Gonna Love Me Now? on Sunday, March 26 at 8pm at AMC Pacific Place 11. The screening will include a pre-film performance by members of the Seattle Men’s Chorus, and director Barak Heymann will be in attendance! Following is a synopsis of the film: Having been barred from his conservative kibbutz in his wilder youth, Saar, a Gay Israeli from a religious family, took refuge in London, where he lives and loves freely.

Now 40, he’s has a good job, a loving boyfriend, and has found a supportive community and surrogate family in the London Gay Men’s Chorus, in which he sings. Saar still craves his family’s love, even while they struggle with fears and prejudices surrounding his life and HIV diagnosis. Torn between comfort and freedom in exile and moving back to Israel to reconcile with his religious family, Saar wavers between withdrawal and confrontation. A series of frank reunions with his gruff father, tearful mother, and righteous siblings in Israel and London illustrate the misunderstandings and ignorance that led to their estrangement, even as each side professes their love and desire to be closer. The Closing Night Centerpiece returns audiences home after a 9-day journey, with the Seattle premiere of Big Sonia on Sunday, April 2 at the Stroum Jewish Community Center (SJCC), followed by a reception. Holocaust survivor, public speaker, and diminutive diva, 4’8”, 91-year-old Sonia’s towering personality, leopard-print panache, and life’s lessons have a big impact. Her story comes to life in this documentary by her granddaughter, Leah Warshawski.

“It is important that SJFF feature, work closely with, and cultivate the work of local Jewish filmmakers, giving them feedback and a forum for works-in-progress opportunities and premieres,” says Lavitt. “Leah and Todd have already presented short work-in-progress clips at our year-round screenings. Now that the film is finished, we are proud to have played a supporting role launching the film.”

He was a fearless explorer of the darkest places in his own troubled soul, and he emerged from that darkness with a flame that lit the way for us all. But now he is dead, and we find we appreciated him and his work far too little while he lived. After a brief service featuring several poignant and laudatory eulogies, time will be allotted for members of the public to share their own memories and appreciations of the life and work of Dean Jacob before the interment of his noble corpse.

Live action Beast a tone-deaf disappointment

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Now playing Disney has had a pretty good run of late taking their animated classics and transforming them into live action box office smashes. Last year both Pete’s Dragon and The Jungle Book, the latter winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, sold a high volume of tickets as well as set critical hearts aflutter. In 2015, Cinderella was a massive success as well, earning an Oscar nomination for its rich, luxuriously imaginative costumes, rave reviews and over $540-million at the global turnstiles. Then there is 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, and while critics were hardly kind to Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll literary classic, that didn’t stop the 3-D spectacular from earning over a billion dollars worldwide.

The one thing all of them have in common is that they all aspired to be more than just scene-for-scene retreads of their animated (or, in the case of Pete’s Dragon, live action-animated hybrid) namesakes. While some of these have been more successful at doing this than others, all of them still made a clear case for their existence outside of their predecessors, and as a result audiences have warmly and enthusiastically responded to them all. As business models go, for Disney this has been unquestionably a good one, the fact they’ve at least made something of an effort to allow their filmmakers the freedom to make each story their own an additional positive worthy of appreciation.

All of which makes director Bill Condon’s (Gods and Monsters, Mr. Holmes) takes on the studio’s 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast monstrously perplexing. While that Best Picture nominee, the first ever animated feature to be so honored and the only one to do it when there were only five contenders, obviously owed a huge debt to Jean Cocteau’s landmark 1946 adaptation of the classic Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont fairy tale, thanks to lush characterizations, superb animation, brilliant set pieces and a marvelous soundtrack it instantaneously entered the pantheon of all-time great Disney classics. It transcended the art form and showed that the studio was ready to charge into a new era of storytelling, offering up a heroine who was strong, smart and willing to forge her own way into the world without the aid of a man.

Condon’s film, save for a handful of new songs and one key moment near the end that grants a heartsick Beast (Dan Stevens) a moment to individually shine, essentially

dance between Beast and Belle in the grand ballroom, is downright awful, looking like a cut scene from a subpar, under-produced video game), not all of the film’s guestimated $200-million or so budget appearing to have made its way up onto the screen. There is an unnerving artificiality that never allows this fantasy fairy tale world to come to life, a mechanically lifeless sheen smothering things, keeping me continually at arm’s length.

But that’s not the worst of it. As nice as Watson is as Belle, as much effort as Stevens puts into his performance as the Beast, there just isn’t any emotion traveling between the two of them, their blossoming love never coming to life in the same way it does in the best adaptations of the de Beaumont story. There just isn’t any heart, no soul, Condon so busy trying to manufacture the world the two live within he for some reason forgets to give the audience a reason to care about whether or not they end up living happily ever after. Screenwriters Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Huntsman: Winter’s War) struggle to do anything other than copy almost wordfor-word what had been done before, and other than a slight tweak here and there the screenplay oftentimes comes across as an almost exact facsimile of its far superior 1991 predecessor.

It isn’t a total loss. Evans is magnificent as the villain Gaston, his scene-stealing turn a resplendently haughty bit of cinematic excess that had me grinning earto-ear every time he appeared on-screen.

Stevens also is very good, nailing his early scenes with a morosely downtrodden belligerence that’s agreeably unsettling, while his delivery of a new song, the poignantly tragic “Evermore,” is sensational. There are also some nice character beats from Kline, McKellen, McGregor and Thompson, each having a moment to make their mark, doing it with feisty brio.

Even so, I can’t bring myself to get all that excited about watching this version of Beauty and the Beast a second time anytime soon. While an almost certain Academy Award contender for Sarah Greenwood’s (Anna Karenina) production design and Jacqueline Durran’s (Mr. Turner) costumes, from an emotional standpoint this Disney effort is about as lively as a roomful of catatonic narcoleptics high on sleeping pills. Condon’s adaptation does nothing to justify its existence, and while this tale might still be as old as time, the song it sings sadly no longer rhymes, making its tune nothing short of a bittersweet, tonedeaf disappointment not worth listening to.

duplicates the animated film in the same way Gus Van Sant’s 1998 version of Psycho was a shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror classic. The best moments, the ones that jump off the screen and force the viewer to sit up straight in their seat and revel in their awe-inspiring glory, are direct pulls from the 1991 Academy Award-nominee, straight-up reenactments that are, if not duplicated exactly, close enough so to feel like they are. As such, the movie never takes on a life of its own, it’s pulse stranded at middling for almost the entirety of its obscene 129-minute running time, all of which makes the watching of it far more of a frustrating chore than it by any and all rights should have been.

The story remains the same. After her eccentric father Maurice (Kevin Kline) goes missing in the woods, headstrong Belle (Emma Watson) heads out into the unknown to find him, discovering the hiding place of the palace of the monstrous Beast in the process. Giving her word to remain with the creature as his guest if he lets her father go, the pair slowly get to know one another, the enchanted knickknacks and objects, led by the gentlemanly candlestick Lumière (Ewan McGregor), the authoritative clock Cogsworth (Ian McKellen) and the kindly tea kettle Mrs. Potts (Emma Thompson), going out of their way to lend support to this blossoming friendship. Meanwhile, back in town, the pompous and self-possessed Gaston (Luke Evans) conspires to

figure out a way to make Belle his bride, his sniveling compatriot LeFou (Josh Gad) inadvertently fanning the brute’s ego with every word he says in support.

All of composer Alan Menken’s (Tangled) and the late lyricist Howard Ashman’s (The Little Mermaid) songs are here, including the Oscar-winning title track, while the composer teams up with frequent collaborator Tim Rice (Aladdin) for a handful of new ones that help pad out the film’s running time. The best moment in the entire motion picture is a spectacular reenactment of the “Be Our Guest” number, McGregor throwing himself into the performance with wild, giddy abandon, while Condon’s orchestrates some Busby Berkeley-like visuals that are beyond fantastic. It was the only time in the movie where I sat up in my seat and peered at the screen in childlike awe, the filmmaker both capturing the spirit of the animated original while also making a signature mark upon the material that is winningly his own.

In regards to positives, that’s the best I’ve got. Featuring inconsistent visual effects and spotty motion capture work that goes from being brilliant (all of the stuff with Cogsworth, Lumière, Mrs. Potts and the majority of the animate inanimate objects is exemplary), to good (the Beast’s icy battle with the wolves is wonderful, as are any of the moments where he and Belle try and slurp soup together), to borderline terrible (the film’s signature sequence, the

Promises fell short when stringent immigration quotas prevented these women from accompanying their husbands to the U.S. The brides were left wondering when they would see their husbands, or if their children would have fathers. In 1945, congress responded with the War Brides Act, allowing 15,000 Australian women non-quota status to reunite with their husbands. In this coming of age story, one such bride must find great courage as the truth of her circumstances comes to light.
