the pop diva run through a dozen songs, intertwined with three costume changes and a semi-chaotic number with her twin children. But in Carey’s defense, since she wasn’t the headlining artist, she did the best she could with her short allotted time; I only wish she’d been on stage longer.

In other words, things couldn’t be better for Against Me!, who last year released its seventh studio album titled Shape Shift with Me, a record that landed on many critics’ year-end lists.

The first time I saw Against Me!, at the Capitol Hill Block Party several years ago, I was blown away by the intensity and energy of the group. The second time, at Neumos about a year later, it was the same incredible experience. I spoke recently with Grace by phone as she was sitting on her tour bus and this is what she had to share with me inside The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: What’s different about being, or playing, in Seattle that’s different than other cities?

Laura Jane Grace: Well, there’s an undeniable feel of when you get to that area of the country. The air feels different, so you know where you are, which I love; it’s beautiful. I’m one who likes rainy weather, so gray skies I’m fine with that. We have a lot of happy memories associated with Seattle, going back to when we toured with The Blood Brothers; there have been so many good shows and so many good times hanging out. Seattle’s awesome!

Rodriguez: Are you playing a lot of songs from Shape Shift with Me on this tour?

Grace: It’s kind of weird right now, as far as we haven’t done a North American headlining tour yet for this record and the record has been out now for almost a year.

But at the same time, we’ve been touring.

We did a Bad Religion tour, we played with Green Day and now we’re doing a headlining tour, but because the record has been out for like a year, the songs blend in the same like any old song; all songs are not new songs at this point. We always try to do a real mix. This tour ends at “The Fest” in Gainesville, Florida and we’re playing Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose, our first album, so I hate nostalgia, but at the same time I was born with a couple of nostalgic bones in my body. The way this all ended up, it feels right in the way that we’re taking the moment to reflect back and ultimately be thankful. It’s the last show of this two-month tour and it feels like the end to a specific era for the band again, in that it’s coming to an end and it’s time to do a new record. It just feels like a good moment to take a look back and be thankful.

Rodriguez: There has been a lot of news surrounding the Transgender community the past couple of years, from the military ban to the North Carolina bathroom law to Caitlyn Jenner publicly coming out.

Do you think all of this has helped make strides in accepting the Transgender community into society, or are we still having problems understanding it?

Grace: I think there’s been amazing strides towards gaining visibility. Whether or not that visibility translates into actually changing the way that the Transgender community is treated in society, I’m not necessarily so sure about that. But I think there has been progress made. That progress, in some ways, was an acquist from the Trump Administration, from everything that’s happened since Trump took office.

We’re forced to recognize that the pendulum swinging that far to the right is in response to the progress that’s been made.

Reading headlines like “Transgender people want equal rights,” that scares people; they don’t want progress, they don’t want other people to have equal rights.

licly, had you been experimenting with being Transgender – were you already wearing women’s clothes, putting on makeup, or identifying as a woman to close friends and family?

Grace: I’ve been Transgender my whole life. It’s funny, there were a couple of moments after I came out where I’d be someplace and wearing makeup, and someone really condescending would be like “Oh, your makeup looks nice, did you do that yourself?” And I’m like, “Yeah, motherfucker! I’ve been putting on makeup since

I met Chester a couple of times, but I didn’t know Chester. Anytime I hear about somebody coming to that kind of end, taking their own life, or even just being in that dark of a place, my heart goes out to them and I understand it. I just want them to stay alive, I want them to be okay.

Rodriguez: I asked Melissa Etheridge a similar question recently because I wonder

I was 11 years old! I just wanted for you to see publicly that I know how to do it.” (laughs) Rodriguez: We recently lost Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, who both took their own lives. Did this impact you personally, and how do you think it affected the rock music community?

Grace: I didn’t want to say this at the beginning of the interview, but obviously this is related to Seattle. In my younger years I was very much into bands that came from Seattle. I loved Pearl Jam. I loved Soundgarden. So, on a personal level, as far as being a fan of Chris Cornell and being a fan of Soundgarden, it affected me.

But on a human level, reading about anybody, or hearing about anyone, taking their own life affects me because I relate really

if maybe as a fan I’m missing something.

Maybe fan adoration and the pressure to please your fans has something to do with it, and she said that as a rock star there is a role you agree to play that puts you on a pedestal, but eventually you realize that it’s hard to sustain this other personality 24 hours a day.

Grace: Sure. Your perception of what you do when you’re in a band is way different than other people’s perception. On a small level of that, for example, I’m on my tour bus right now. I’m so thankful and I think it’s so awesome that we’re able to afford a tour bus and travel on a tour bus, and it makes things so much easier. People on the outside are like, “Ooh, that’s so nice, that’s so fancy”. But when you’re in-

continued from page 3 side a tour bus, you realize “I’m living in a submarine and it smells like farts in the hallway” (laughs). It’s kind of gross. It’s nice, but there’s the reality of it. It’s different than what the outside perception is of it. People think that being backstage is all nice and cool to hang out, but after you’ve been backstage for a couple of years with your band it’s all smelly and gross and everyone’s just sitting around looking at their fucking iPhones; there’s no big parties happening, there’s no magic happening behind the curtain. A lot of those things you realize are so different than the perception people have, and what it’s like to actually live that life and the sacrifices you have to make with your family. I know that both Chris and Chester were parents and people don’t realize the sacrifices that are made to make a living, to do what you do. Those are the choices you choose to make, but at the same time they’re hard choices to make.

Rodriguez: When you’re on tour and have a few hours of personal time to explore, what do you like doing?

Grace: I like walking. I like walking because it’s good exercise, I always feel good if I walk a long distance during the day, but that’s dependent on where you are on tour.

If we’re playing like where the show is at in Seattle – we’ll be in downtown – you can walk to tons of stuff, so it’s awesome. I like to explore, I want to see a little bit of where we’re at. The last tour we did this summer was in Europe and we were there for like 5 and a half or 6 weeks, and every day it was wake up, eat breakfast, go for a walk, find an old church and sit in an old church for a

while; just being a part of where we’re at.

Rodriguez: For anyone that hasn’t been to an Against Me! show, can you describe the live experience?

Grace: For anyone that hasn’t been to an Against Me! show, I very much aspire to be like The Ramones. I’m not a politician, I don’t have anything to sell you other than if someone picks up a hoodie or a record, but I just want to fucking play music. That’s what it’s about, it’s about playing music. We just came to rock, and we’re going to try and cram as many songs as we can into our set.

Rodriguez: When something like Charlottesville, or the recent flooding in Houston, or last year’s shooting in Orlando happens, do you ever take the weight of that on stage?

Grace: Of course, of course, so much of it! You’re kind of putting together things that are sort of different, like Houston is no one’s fault, a natural disaster is a natural disaster. Our friends who print our teeshirts are based in Houston. I know people everywhere I go, I don’t live a life where all of my friends are back home. So when something happens anywhere in the world, I can reference it. Like what happened in Orlando. I grew up in Florida and hung out in Orlando all the time. I know where Pulse nightclub is. My heart goes out to anybody who’s involved in a tragedy like that. But it does make it real, it does affect you when it’s also what you do, like when people going to someplace to listen to music who are then the victims of something terrible that happened, like the Bataclan shooting in Paris. We played the Bataclan, I know the Bataclan, it’s hard because you have those thoughts in your head and they go with you where you go, even on stage.

George Michael releases posthumous single of reworked B-side

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The late George Michael left us a gift, a new song to listen to nine months after his sudden death. Actually, it’s a re-tooled version of “Fantasy,” previously released as a B-side, but tweaked by famed Chic member and top producer Nile Rodgers, who’d been collaborating with the pop superstar before his passing. The song was originally intended to be featured on Michael’s 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, but didn’t make the final cut of tracks; it then became a B-side for “Freedom! ’90” in the US and “Waiting for That Day” in the UK. Rodgers has said in recent interviews that he had “mixed feelings” about working on “Fantasy” because of Michael’s death, stating on social media that he approached the project with “tears, uncertainty, happiness & #LOVE.” You can listen to the song on YouTube.

Actress-singer Zendaya has been chosen to receive the GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) Gamechanger Award for her commitment to social justice. The former Disney star, who appeared in this summer’s blockbuster movie SpiderMan: Homecoming, has been an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights and even defended her gay fans on social media when a troll criticized one of her photos for looking like “a gay dude wearing makeup,” to which she quickly snapped back, “Wait....is this supposed to be an insult cause they slay.” Zendaya, who is only 21 years old, will receive the award during the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards in Beverly Hills on October 20. She released her self-titled album in 2013.

past week when Walter Becker, co-founder and original member of the pop-blues-jazz act Steely Dan, died on September 3 at the age of 67. The eclectic duo, which also featured Donald Fagen, enjoyed a successful run in the ’70s and ’80s that included the highly acclaimed albums Aja and Gaucho. They made a comeback in 2000 with the Grammy-winning record Two Against Nature, which earned the pair the Album of the Year award. Some of Steely Dan’s most popular singles are “Deacon Blues,” “Peg,” “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” “Do It Again” and “Hey Nineteen.” Fagen, by the way, will perform in Seattle with his band,

continued from cover ing a tight black dress with silver frills, the power vocalist, who has sold a whopping 200 million records and collected 5 Grammys in her career, opened her set with “Heat” from her E-MC2 album. Carey sounded incredible, belting out a few top ballads from her 30-year catalog, such as a gorgeous rendition of “My All” and a flawless delivery of “Vision of Love,” her first ever hit that had a church-like feel inside the arena.

“Heartbreaker” had a light disco vibe and was speckled with bits of Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover,” which she covered back in 2000 during a concert tribute to the Supremes singer. “Touch My Body” was playful, if not unsurprisingly sexy, considering Carey has always welcomed sensuality into every facet of her career, from music videos to publicity photos to just about everything in between.

After greeting fans, many of whom were gay couples or friends dressed in matching shirts with Carey’s album titles or face imprinted on them, the pop-R&B queen quickly summoned her makeup artists to the stage for a quick touch up before continuing on. A longtime LGBT community supporter, the global superstar accepted the Ally Award at the GLAAD Media Awards in 2016, presented to her by dear friend Lee Daniels, who directed Carey in the Oscarwinning film Precious.

During “Always Be My Baby,” the singer’s children Moroccan and Monroe, were brought out to the stage with one of their friends to help mommy sing it. But only Monroe, who at the age of 6 possesses mom’s talent and sass, offered her vocals to the song; meanwhile brother Moroccan ran and jumped around the stage, not paying too much attention to what was going on.

Like Carey said, “they do what they want” and that they did; needless to say, her kids are really adorable and we’ll probably be seeing more from Monroe in the years to come.

“It’s Like That,” one of the native New Yorker’s most recent hits, was cool and catchy, while “We Belong Together,” a huge comeback single for Carey from 2005 that closed out her main set, delivered all the goosebumps and spine tingles it was supposed to. For an encore, Carey soared on a performance of “Hero” that was dedicated to a friend battling cancer. And that was it. There was no “Emotions,” “Fantasy,”

“Make It Happen,” “Someday,” “Dreamlover,” “Obsessed,” or several other songs that we were hoping to hear performed on Tuesday evening. Instead, we got to see Carey slip into three glittery gowns, all silver by the way, and a no-name DJ spin ’80s and ’90s tracks for about 7 minutes. Surely, there was time to squeeze in more songs.

After a long break, it was time for Richie. Settling into a piano that rose from below the stage, the five-time Grammy winner opened with “Easy,” which included a snippet from “My Love” and solo guitar and saxophone parts. He followed with “Running with the Night,” displaying some tricky dance moves at the center of the Vshaped platform.

“Seattle, welcome to the show!” exclaimed Richie, surveying the adoring crowd on their feet and cheering wildly.

Throughout the night, he would interact with the audience frequently, telling comical stories, or simply setting up the next song with a brief introduction.

Fans sang along to pretty much everything, like “Penny Lover” and a beautiful version of “Truly,” plus a spirited rendition of “You Are” performed in front of a solid red-lit screen and Richie working the stage

from side to side. “Stuck on You” featured a harmonica and was dedicated to a couple, who were also super fans of Richie’s, sitting just below the stage. Everybody was up for “Dancing on the Ceiling,” which transitioned the venue into a party scene with exuberant energy bursting from all around.

The legendary singer-songwriter delighted longtime followers with a Commodores medley that stitched together verses and choruses of “Fancy Dancer,” “Sweet Love” and “Lady (You Bring Me Up),” as well as full versions of “Three Times a Lady,” which found Richie hanging onto a note for about a minute before wrapping up the song, “Brick House,” “Just to Be Close to You” and “Sail On,” which Richie noted was penned when his ex-wife said “Would you please just go away,” which are part of the song’s lyrics.

“Hello,” off the Alabama-born musician’s second album Can’t Slow Down, featured a large disco ball lowered from the arena’s roof down to about ten feet above the heads of those on the main floor. “Say You Say Me” erupted into another singalong with even grown men belting it out at the top of their lungs. A surprise entry on Richie’s set list, and something he didn’t include on his last tour stop in Seattle a few

years ago, was “We Are the World,” a universal hit that he co-wrote with Michael Jackson. Photos of artists who participated in the recording of the song, which benefited food charities in Ethiopia, were shown as he performed it. This capped the main portion of Richie’s performance.

“All Nite Long (All Nite)” was the closing number and the lone song played during an encore. No one stayed seated for it, as concertgoers were on their feet jubilantly dancing and singing as if attending a big wedding reception; it was a really fun way to end it all. And “all” being the key word because Richie promised he’d unload all the hits on this tour, and with the exception of “Still” and “Endless Love,” which to my disappointment was not performed with Carey, a missed opportunity if you ask me, he did indeed deliver all the hits.

Seattle was the final night of this collaborative tour of Richie and Carey with no immediate word on an extended run. The show was originally scheduled for April, but the former artist was forced to reshuffle a series of dates as a result of a knee injury.

I’m glad to report that he’s in great health and sounds amazing, so here’s to the likely possibility we’ll hear all those hits again in the near future.

OPEN • SET exhibit celebrating the artistry of bookbinding opens at Seattle Public Library The Seattle Public Library will host OPEN • SET, a traveling exhibit featuring the work of 40 award-winning bookbinding artists from around the globe, beginning Friday, September 8 through Saturday, October 28 at the Central Library's Level 8 Gallery.

The OPEN • SET exhibit celebrates the beauty and craft of design bookbinding and provides the public with a unique opportunity to learn more about this important art form. Those who visit the exhibit will gain a greater appreciation for a well-made and artistically designed book.

Seattle’s Central Library is the exhibit’s only stop in the Pacific Northwest. Learn more from experts about the inspiration and process when creating fine bindings coveted by collectors and included in rare book collections of prestigious museums

throughout the world.

The featured books were selected in a juried competition. Participants were invited to bind a copy of the designated “SET” book (David Esslemont’s out-ofprint “Inside the Book”), or bind a book of their choice in the “OPEN” category.

Entries were limited to one book per category. Binders from all levels and cultures were invited to participate. The 50 books in this exhibit represent a variety in style and structural approach of the submissions received.

Futurama Redux is the first U.S. showing of an international traveling exhibit on the future of transport. It has been exhibited in Vienna, Hong Kong and other cities.

Futurama Redux was inspired by the Futurama exhibit at the 1939 World’s Fair, which predicted and celebrated the world’s auto, highway and gasoline-dominated present.

Futurama Redux imagines how people can achieve efficient and clean urban mobility by the year 2050. The exhibit opens a space for discussion regarding how people in the Pacific Northwest might work back-

ward from a desired 2050 future to guide transportation and land use changes over the coming years.

“Death makes fiction of us all”

Alistair McCartney explores beguilingly morbid obsessions in The Disintegrations

by Michael Upchurch Special to the SGN THE DISINTEGRATIONS ALISTAIR MCCARTNEY University of Wisconsin Press 219 pp., $26.95 To describe gay author Alistair McCartney’s wryly obsessive new novel, The Disintegrations, as “fiction” is a little misleading. Figures from his personal life – including his colleagues at Antioch University in Los Angeles and his husband, performance artist Tim Miller – turn up in it. Newspaper accounts of murders pepper its pages.

Its details on Los Angeles’ Holy Cross Cemetery aren’t just diligently researched but obsessively experienced as McCartney wanders the graveyard again and again.

The Disintegrations even comes with a three-page bibliography that cites an online “Serial Killer Crime Index” and something called “The Oxfordshire Bereavement Guide” [215-216] among its sources. McCartney’s explanation of what he’s up to is as ambiguous as it is illuminating.

“This is a novel,” he writes, “a product of the author’s imagination. Even when real names of individuals or places are used, the characters, settings, and situations should not be mistaken for nonfiction; as someone once told me, Death makes fiction of us all.”

The book progresses in a series of reminiscences and inquiries. As such, it has a kinship with the work of Teju Cole (Open City) and Rachel Cusk (Outline, Transit).

All three authors use associative thought and rumination as strangely compelling storytelling devices, with highly readable results.

To be sure, The Disintegrations is a tad more morbid than anything Cole and Cusk have written. It’s also witty, hypnotic and waywardly fascinating. Vivid characters emerge from its ghoulish eccentricity, including McCartney’s fictional version of himself. (“I’m the world’s worst listener,” he admits, “except when the subject is death and my ears prick up.”) [96] What kind of guy, one wonders, would write a book like this?

McCartney was born in Perth, Australia, in 1971, and has lived in Los Angeles since the 1990s. (He got together with Miller in 1994.) His first novel, The End of the World Book, was as offbeat as The Disintegrations. It consisted of 26 chapters – one for each letter of the alphabet – in which McCartney addressed random topics that caught his eye. Under “M,” for instance,

he focused on macramé, mad-cow disease, magpies, milk bottles, moans, mustaches and more.

The Disintegrations shares the same urge to impose order on chaos – in this case, the chaos of death. “There are only so many ways to be born,” McCartney remarks.

“But when it comes to death, God is at his most imaginative. … The options seem to be infinite.” [41] Cancer, heroin overdose, murder, suicide – McCartney gets into it all. It takes a peculiar sort of chap to dwell so intently on these matters, and McCartney is indeed an oddball.

“Death gives me a purpose,” he declares, “a sense of direction. Death keeps me focused.” [13] Spinning tale after tale, anecdote after anecdote, he winds up paradoxically writing a book that teems with life, even as it keeps its eye on the threshold where life vanishes. Think of McCartney as a morgue-fixated Scheherazade, and you’ll get an idea what The Distintegrations is like. Throw in his inability to keep his sexual impulses under control, whether he’s at a funeral parlor with his husband or investigating cardboard crematory coffins at Holy Cross, and you’re edging toward farce.

All McCartney’s stories are addressed to an unidentified listener (“I feel like I can tell you almost anything”), [21] but this “you” isn’t Tim Miller, with whom things are “touch and go” [31] at times. Instead, McCartney’s “you” could be the reader or, perhaps, one of the book’s murder victims who stir such deep responses in him – among them, a young UCLA student, mentioned on the opening page, who vanished from his dorm and was found dead in Oregon a couple of years later.

It’s disconcerting when McCartney, who came of age at the height of the AIDS epidemic, declares, “It’s not that there has been too much death in my life. The problem is there hasn’t been nearly enough.”

[106] But once you accept this premise, The Disintegrations is wholly seductive.

It can even be hilarious. One of McCartney’s first brushes with death came when he was a boy. A married couple who lived in his suburban Perth neighborhood were caught kidnapping, torturing and murdering teenage girls. McCartney’s mother, who often commented on what an eyesore their yard was, wasn’t the least bit surprised.

“Well of course they did it,” she says.

“Just look at the state of their garden.” [51] McCartney’s death obsessions, it’s hinted, may be a carry-over from his taste for slapstick cartoons (“Tom and Jerry,” “Looney Tunes,” etc.) when he was a kid.

“Those old cartoons were bright and jazzy, and above all, they were violent,” he recalls.

“We would watch, riveted, as these cute fluffy creatures were flattened with huge frying pans, run over by trains or trucks, blown to bits by cherry-red sticks of dynamite, and shattered by cannonballs.” [94] McCartney goes deeper than this, of course, when addressing his adult life. His chapter on the strangely appreciative way his Antioch colleague, Aino Passonen, dealt with a brain tumor is extraordinary.

“I’m learning so much about the brain,” she says. “All this wonderful knowledge.

When they split open my skull and removed the tumor, I felt like I’d given birth to something, like Athena sprung from the head of Zeus.” [137-138] It’s a genuine pleasure to be in her company, and for anyone who’s had direct experience of death, McCartney’s casual sidestepping of the usual hush and discretion surrounding terminal illness feels like an act of urgent sympathy. For McCartney, Aino’s eventual death triggers a recollection of a forgotten exchange they had when his first book was published. His strangely clinical phrasing of how this moment came back to him is as beautiful as it is unusual.

“When people die, flow out of the world,” he says, “a certain pressure can be relieved, through an almost hydraulic mechanism, releasing memories.” [143] That same pressure drives the whole book forward. There’s no single plot that unfolds in The Disintegrations, but there are forces of revelation that build from chapter to chapter.

“The relationship between the living and the dead is not fixed; it is unstable,” McCartney observes. “The relationship is not reciprocal. We are above ground thinking about the dead who are below ground, ignoring the living.” [62] With its conversational voice and elasticity of method, The Disintegrations runs bracing circles around “Death, the great disintegrator, the gnarly unmaker.” [105] Novelist Michael Upchurch (Passive Intruder) writes frequently for Seattle Times, Boston Globe, and other publications.

At eight years old, Polina (Veronika Zhovnytska) is taken by her parents to a Russian ballet school to audition for the notoriously perfectionist Bojinski (Aleksey Guskov), a well-respected instructor whose pupils have gone on to dance all over the world. While nowhere near as technically proficient as others in her group, there is something about the child that attracts Bojinski’s eye. He sees something in Polina, a ferocious determination that he might be able to mold into something glorious if this youngster is willing to work hard enough to achieve her dreams, and as such he accepts her into the school to be trained.

Years later, Polina (Anastasia Shevtsova) has excelled and Bojinski could not be prouder of his pupil. But just as she is on the verge of being accepted into the Bolshoi Ballet, the young woman is captivated by the world of contemporary modern dance. Polina eschews the Bolshoi and instead heads to Paris to study under renowned choreographer Liria Elsaj (Juliette Binoche), the two establishing an instant connection almost as if the latter has noticed something of her youthful past self in the lithe, athletic body of the technically exacting former. But for as much as they see eye-to-eye, Polina’s inability to let go, to not always seek perfection, keeps her from tapping into the emotional recesses that are key for Liria’s artistic vision to be realized, a wall building up between the two that could very well destroy the dancer’s dreams of success before they have the chance to be realized.

That is a fairly simple breakdown of the plot, but in all actuality Müller and Preljocaj’s film is far more complicated and nuanced than any brief synopsis could ever do full justice to. Characters weave in and out of Polina’s story, including a pair of boyfriends, each of whom plays a key role in helping her make some core decisions, both good and bad; no one really staying around all that long but all making an indelible imprint that’s difficult to forget. In the end,

both Bojinski and Liria are proven correct.

Polina might be talented, but technical perfection can only take her so far, and until she learns why she dances and how to tap into the deep, tragic-filled well of emotions she’s loathe to take stock of she’ll never be the star both of her instructors feel she could be.

I’m hesitant to talk too much about what happens after the dancer leaves Paris, as the film’s final third is a constant stunner that held me spellbound, and while I won’t say I was surprised by where things ended up, the tears cascading down my cheeks were as genuine as they were well-deserved.

Seeing Polina find herself, watching her struggle, live life and find the reason to become the dancer she worked so hard to become but do so in a manner she would never have imagined possible when she was a little girl, all of it is amazing. My heart was continually in my throat, the final dance sequence so mind-blowing my eyes came perilously close to popping right out of my head.

has performed with Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, is extraordinary as Polina. Her performance is exquisitely rigid, the young woman fearlessly not dulling the character’s sharper edges, not seeming to care one way or the other if audiences like the dancer or not. This has the effect of making her transformation during the latter stages of the film all the more powerful. Seeing Polina deal with her hardship and emotional travails, most of which she’s brought upon herself, watching her as she channels these painful experiences into her art, all of it is sensational, and it’s all because of Shevtsova that it works as well as it does.

Being unfamiliar with Vivès’s best-selling graphic novel, it’s not for me to say if the differences between it and Müller’s introspective screenplay are a big deal or not, although based on the divine beauty of the film, the way it achieves such complex realism, it seems to me this is a silly conversation. I love that Liria, even as briefly as she is around, makes such a lasting impression, Binoche bringing her to life with marvel-

ous ingenuity. Same with Guskov as Bojinski. This man could have been a caricature, while the performance itself could have just as simply slipped into melodramatic cliché.

Instead there is more to this driven taskmaster than initially meets the eye, and as such the film’s final seconds resonate with a fervent vitality that knocked me softly senseless.

The dance sequences are beyond compare, Preljocaj’s staging of them, coupled with cinematographer Georges Lechaptois’s (Disorder) stunning camerawork, just astonishing. The languid evolution of the visuals parallel Polina’s own journey as a dancer, everything culminating in a final number that is truly incredible. The profound beauty of what happens during this last modern dance ballet encapsulates everything Müller and Preljocaj have been building towards flawlessly, ultimately making Polina the type of unexpected marvel that keeps me heading back to the theatre time and time again. I love this movie.

More importantly, I cannot wait to see it again.
