its first production of the 2017-2018 season, is to stir up provocative ideas and then connect us with profound revelations, then this production comes up just a bit short.

Artistic Director Mathew Wright notes that the theme to this season’s six production, titled “I Am,” concerns identity and the journey we take to discover this. It’s a noble task and ArtsWest does have the talent to meet this task.

directly from workshops to Broadway, and the work was not in haste. A simultaneous homage to the works of Shakespeare and musical theatre, it is easy to see why the musical was nominated for the Tony for Best Musical.

The story takes place during the English Renaissance and at the height of William Shakespeare’s career. Shakespeare is hailed as a rock star to the wondrous praise

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer JANET JACKSON “STATE OF THE WORLD” TOUR KEY ARENA September 27 Barring no surprises or last-minute cancellations, the one and absolutely only Janet Jackson will arrive in Seattle this coming week for a long-awaited concert appearance at Key Arena. This is a rescheduled performance from last year, a show and tour the R&B-pop superstar put on hold to start a family; she’s since given birth to her first child, a boy named Eissa.

If you’re thinking that it’s been ages since Jackson visited Seattle, you would be right. She last appeared in the Emerald City back in 2011 at McCaw Hall, as part of her “Number Ones: Up Close and Personal” tour, and it was my least favorite concert of the three times I’ve seen her live. Too many medleys, lazy choreography and a flat performance overall, it left me wanting more, and I know she’s capable of a lot more.

woman, new mama, baby weight off – is now, a whole new Miss Janet-if-you’re-nasty. This is a comeback. Although her most recent singles, “No Sleeep” (with J. Cole), “Unbreakable” and “Dammn Baby,” failed to resurrect her slumping record sales streak, it’s on stage where she really shines, a fierce performer who can dance like no one else; well, except for her brother, of course. But she’s in a category all her own when it comes to performing live.

The “State of the World Tour” kicked off September 7 in Lafayette, Louisiana and includes dates through mid-December. The opening night set list featured 36 songs, but she’s expected to scale it down a bit for the Seattle show, and God forbid she squeeze them all into medleys (again!). Thus far, the tour has collected positive reviews.

So let’s talk about some of the songs Jackson could whip out for us at Key Arena. She’s gotta do the big hits, which means “Nasty,” “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Miss You Much,” “Control,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” and “That’s the Way Love Goes” should all be on the set list, and I’ll throw in my personal favorite, “If.”

Besides these, you might hear “All Nite (Don’t Stop),” “Escapade,” “The Pleasure Principle,” “Velvet Rope” and “When I Think of You.” Newer songs will likely be wedged in between fan favorites, and dancing is guaranteed – on stage, on the floor and well, pretty much everywhere; you don’t sit down at a Janet Jackson concert.

Besides her great legacy of music, the 51 year-old has been a loyal ally of the LGBT community, earning honors from the Human Rights Commission, GLAAD Media Awards and AIDS Project Los Angeles for her tireless contributions to AIDS awareness and for being an outspoken supporter of gay rights, and more recently transgender rights.

What a thrill it will be to welcome Janet Jackson back to Seattle on Thursday night!

Showtime is at 8pm, and though no opening act has been mentioned, don’t be surprised if there is one. Regardless, arrive on time and plan your transportation in advance as to not get delayed in traffic.

With a coquette/kittenish personality that easily exudes, it is a pleasure to talk to this talented Lady of the Theatre.

Eric Andrews-Katz: Who were your earliest influences in becoming a performer?

Faith Prince: Probably my father, who was actually a nuclear engineer, because he was very funny. He would tell jokes to the family and our friends; picture Mickey Rooney, but a little taller with red hair.

He was sort of a vaudeville guy by nature.

He influenced me. Since I watched television, there was also Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett. I loved comedy. I’ve always loved telling stories and I was sort of the class clown. I would come home and talk about my teachers, making up stories, etc…I was always quirky and funny.

Andrews-Katz: What kind of music influences the things you do?

Prince: Mostly by the church choir and school singing groups. I always liked choruses, and we did plays in high school. I was “Laurie” in Oklahoma and “Nellie” in South Pacific.

Andrews-Katz: They say that an actress learns from every role or show she’s done. What have you learned from the following experiences: First, your Broadway debut in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.

Prince: It wasn’t so much the experience of the show as it was Jerome himself. I learned discipline and focus and specificity from him.

Andrews-Katz: “Trina” – from Falsettoland.

Prince: Entering her life was difficult.

From her I learned compassion, and how sometimes your family is different from what you thought it would be, and that no matter what happens, there has to be forgiveness and moving on.

Andrews-Katz: Winning a Tony Award for “Adelaide” from Guys & Dolls.

Prince: Sheer, unadulterated terror!

Honestly, I don’t like awards.

Andrews-Katz: “Belle” – from Little Me. Prince: You probably shouldn’t do a show called Little Me, and is really about little he.

Andrews-Katz: “Aggie Hurley” - from A Catered Affair.

Prince: You need to balance out the dark roles you do with something funny in the day, or by doing something for yourself.

When you are living in someone else’s dark world, it can really take you down. I would go to Central Park, or go see a comedy. I needed to have good laughs with friends.

Andrews-Katz: What was it like to be in the short-lived musical of James Joyce’s The Dead?

Prince: I was a replacement for that cast. They had been through a lot by the time I came along, a director was fired, and other changes, and it was interesting. I’ve had a lot of group therapy and I walked into the cast thinking [of the different people] “Dysfunctional”, or “Talented”, etc… I would wait for the director to tell me what to do, and I’d do it. I kept walking. We all found each other eventually, on mutual ground, so…Yeah for Group Therapy!

Andrews-Katz: You did a studio recording of the allusive [***change to illusive] musical Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

Why do you think the show’s never opened on Broadway?

Prince: We can’t say it in the paper. It was a weird discombobulating of things. I mean really, do you see me as Audrey Hepburn? Let’s start there. I did the recording, but like a lot of things, it was a good idea but ill conceived.

Andrews-Katz: How did you meet Jason Graae and what led to The Prince and the Showboy as an act?

Prince: I can’t tell you that – it’s part of the show and you’ll have to come and find out. I can say that he [Jason] is irreverent and I’m kind of wacky. Together we are like a fresh spin on a vaudeville team duo.

Andrews-Katz: What should audiences look forward to during your appearance in Tacoma?

Prince: Juicy stories! And a divine sort of entertaining duo.

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role, regardless of all limitations, what role would it be and why?

Prince: There’s three of them. First, Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd. I think I understand her plight and could certainly go to the extreme. I always look to see if I could walk through someone else’s doors,

(Writer Ayad Akhtar’s other work Disgraced, which won the Pulitzer Prize, would fit this season’s “I Am” theme and it might have been an ideal choice for this season’s lead production. However, Disgraced comes with the baggage as being one of the most heavily produced plays in recent years and was also a recent divisive production at Seattle Rep. That production, I found challenging and not quite meeting the sum of its own lofty parts, but in it was that glimmer of fine writing from a renowned playwright and excellence in broaching its own themes of religion and identity.)

In ArtsWest’s production of The Who & the What, Akhtar’s story is of writer Zarina, an outstanding Monika Jolly, seeking her own identity by exposing gender inconsistencies within Islam. She is suffering from severe writer’s block and the death of her beloved mother still haunts her.

She spends hours at the library pining away deep in thought staring out a window. It’s pretty fascinating stuff, but this story needs more room to breathe. It feels constrained like a too-well edited essay leaving out its most thrilling details.

Director Samip Raval maintains the even-keeled momentum with its themes of the challenges of family (an American-Pakistani family in Atlanta) and religion (Islam). The play only hints at some of Zarina’s controversial writings about Prophet Muhammad and his more human tendencies and the consequences of her words once her book, entitled The Who & the What, is published. Only the pained expressions of her father, compellingly played by Abhijeet Rane, reveal just how controversial her writing is. He contemplates the potential “useless existence” of his daughter’s life. He suffers the shame of life altering personal consequences as a result of her book. In this play, he becomes the disgraced one.

Haley Alaji portrays her Zarina’s sassy sister Mahwish with her own cocktail hour like dramas and Andre Nelson effectively plays her convert husband Eli, the bland “nice-guy” to Zarina’s woman on a quest.

Their great acting satisfyingly fleshes out this story of the dynamics of the family in moral peril.

The Who & the What unveils a unique story from one unique family in America and this is the reason to see this production.

Somewhere deep within this story, there is that “I Am” moment, and this play is good enough for you to discover it.

to find the part for me, so I could go through it and become them. The trick is to balance it so you don’t become lost in it.

Second, would be Dolly Levi from Hello, Dolly! I think she is very co-dependent, and I used to be. I’m a caretaker and have always been one. In that time period, Dolly’s husband died and she had to get on with her life, figure out what to do and how to make a living. We are both survivors and I can understand that.

The third would have to be Mama Rose.

Jerome Robbins said to me that Rose wasn’t a monster, she was merely out of a Depression. She was trying to get food on the table for her kids. She used craft and clawed her way to make it happen. Then she got caught up in it; that’s the tragedy. She was doing it for good reasons and, like any relationship, if you don’t keep up a healthy balance of what you need and what someone else

needs, you just get on that train. If you don’t include someone else’s thoughts in your decision, it usually ends in disaster. I could understand how that would happen.

Faith Prince has been nominated for three Tony Awards for her roles in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Bells are Ringing and A Catered Affair. She won the Tony for her acclaimed performance in Guys and Dolls opposite Nathan Lane.

David Edward-Hughes is a proclaimed “Encyclopedia of musical theatre.” After many performances on various Seattle stages, David became the founding CoProducer/Artistic Director of Showtunes Theatre for over a decade. David is the Artistic Director for Sing Out Louise the new theatrical company in association with (Executive Director) Roger Klorese.

They were the ones that encouraged Shakespeare to turn from awful actor to playwright, and now bitterly resent his success. After engaging a soothsayer, a man named Nostradamus (a distant cousin of the famous one), it is revealed that the hits of the future are plays with songs and dancing in them. It is a new concept called The Musical. After a confusing vision the prophet also reveals that Shakespeare’s greatest play is yet to be written.

Nick decides to take both prophecies and combines them in an attempt to upstage Shakespeare and create the world’s first musical.

The entire ensemble of this show are all incredibly enjoyable. The supporting roles all have their moments to shine and none try to steal individual attention away from the lead characters. Autumn Hurlbert plays “Portia,” the Puritan Preacher’s daughter with an empathetic heart for poets, and serves as the love interest for Nigel Bottom. Ms. Hurlbert is perfect as the innocent ingénue. Her voice is clear and her iridescence is easily noted. The same can be said of Maggie Lakis who plays “Bea,” the ambitiously equality seeking wife of Nick Bottom. Ms. Lakis’ talent is there, with a good voice for the duet “Right Hand Man.” The role of Shakespeare arguably straddles the thin line between what is a “supporting” role and what is a “leading” one. Adam Pascal (the original “Roger” in RENT) plays William Shakespeare as a rock star by circumstances. Privately admitting to theft for his best works, Shakespeare enjoys the praise and profits. Pascal’s presence is undeniably strong and his voice is just as noteable. His song “Hard to Be the Bard” is a comic pleasure. Even playing “camp,” Pascal brings that extra something to the role that is the reason why he is a star.

There are three main roles that are all brilliantly done. Josh Grisetti plays the younger Bottom brother, “Nigel.” He exudes as the goofy, younger brother with the writing talents who falls in love with the Puritan’s daughter. His character is easily likeable and his voice is strong. His reactions on stage are comical without being camp and his performance was a pleasure to watch.

MK Scott: After the success of “Mister Act,” “Legally Black” and “9 to 5 1/2 inches,” now you are back with the Hocus Pocus parody, “Hocum Pokem.” What is this one’s inspiration?

Blake Hammond plays the bargain prophet, “Nostradamus.” From the very moment he takes the stage, Mr. Hammond’s presence is understood as being the scene stealing character. His movements are smooth, his character is larger than life without being over the top, and his songs are enjoyable. “Nostradamus” is given the showstopping (literally) number “A Musical,” and it is for good reason. He leads the number with precision while randomly jumping from numerous musical homages, to some of the most recognizable clips of musical history. Mr. Hammond’s performance is pure delight and magical to watch.

Rob McClure is the ambitious actor “Nick Bottom.” Bitterly resentful of Shakespeare’s success, he leads the ensemble in the delightful musical theme of the night, “God, I Hate Shakespeare.” This is a man who knows comic timing in all forms, including staging, movement and singing.

Mr. McClure excels in his role and brings a touch of bitter buffoonery that is easily forgiven by his driving ambition.

Real life brothers Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick wrote the music and lyrics for the show. Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell wrote the script. The songs are

fun and clever, especially the aforementioned “God, I Hate Shakespeare” and “A Musical.” The lyrics are easy to understand and the music is definitely hummable, and there’s not much more you can want from a musical. The book is cleverly written. Although it does at times border on it, the script never fully enters the forbidden realm of cliché and still lets the audience think to understand all the references and comments.

Something Rotten! is a fun musical that does what musical theatre is supposed to do; it provides escape. The music is good, the lyrics are clever, the story makes one think and it’s fun. If you are not a theatre fan, the show is still enjoyable, and if you are a theatre fan; be prepared to catch quick lines, subtle references, and over the top remarks.

There are only two things I can say that I found negative about Something Rotten!

– one of them with the show itself, and one of them not. The role of the Brother Jeremiah (played by Scott Cote) is a “holier than thou” character that is written to be a hypocritically closeted homosexual. The jokes and mincing motions ran a little too long for my taste and while still staying at

the furthest edges of humor, the realms of offense were in sight. The second offense was taken with the four people sitting in front of me. Obviously this quartet was enjoying their cocktails and conversations so much, they continued it throughout most of the performance. Despite several polite attempts to remind them of the simultaneous “other performance,” their loud, disruptive commentary and conversation continued through both acts. What added insult to injury is that during intermission they greeted the theatre’s Managing Director as if they were close friends; thus they should have known better theatre etiquette, and shame on them.

Something Rotten! started workshops in 2014 with a Pre-Broadway plan to open at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. After taking advantage of an opportunity, the show skipped Seattle for its Broadway debut on March 23, 2015. The show ran for over 700 performances and was nominated for nine Tony Awards in the 2015 Season. The actor Christian Borle (playing Shakespeare) would win the show’s only Tony Award for Best Actor in a Featured Role (Musical).

Peaches Christ: For years there have been younger Peaches fans asking when I was going to do a Hocus Pocus show and I was kinda like “huh?” because when the movie came out I was in my early 20’s and was a little too old for it and I didn’t grow up watching it like these younger folks did. After a while I realized the cult for this thing was very substantial so I sat down and watched it through their eyes and realized that it all made sense. These three women, especially Bette Midler, are delivering drag performances. They’re so wily and outrageous and campy and over-thetop. Of course, too, like all great fairy tales for children, it’s super twisted! Sucking the souls out little children! It was perfectly ripe for a Peaches parody.

MK: What do you like about working with Jinkx in this show compared to “Grey Gardens”?

Peaches: I like working with Jinkx, period. She’s been in loads of my shows including Return To Grey Gardens, “Addams Apple Family Values,” “Death Drop Gorgeous,” and we’ve even done a two-woman cabaret show together in London. Part of the reason I love working with her is that she’s so incredibly talented. We all know that. But more than that, we’re chosen family and really care about each other and enjoy spending time together and creating stuff and making each other laugh.

MK: I noticed you and Jinkx worked tirelessly for months in Provincetown with “Grey Gardens” and another version of 9 to 5, called “5 to 9,” what other shows did you showcase?

Peaches: Maybe you’re referring to “Idol Worship” the show that I did with Mink Stole? That was a one-off show and a lot of fun and we’re taking it on the road, but other than that I did two nights a week of “Grey Gardens” and two nights a week of “5 to 9” for a few months in Provincetown.

It was great.

MK: Also back is Bob the Drag Queen replacing, Ginger Minj, due to her filming schedule of a top secret project. Did the show have to change and accommodate?

Peaches: It’s not actually secret anymore now that it’s been announced in the trades. Ginger is co-starring in a movie with Jennifer Aniston and had to drop out for the shooting schedule. I did re-write the show to include Bob because my shows are always hybrid presentations of people’s drag characters with the film character they’re embodying so the script we had for Ginger wouldn’t have been right for Bob. I’m super excited Bob is doing this!

MK: What show are you bringing to Seattle next? Did I just see Bianca del Rio as “Sheetlejuice” on Facebook?

Peaches: We are bringing “Sheetlejuice” to Los Angeles, but I don’t know what our next Seattle / PDX show is for sure. I’d love it if “Sheetlejuice” were to work out!

MK: Burning Question: Who would you cast a spell on and why?

Peaches: The entire current administration in the White House. I’d freeze them and replace them – send them back in time or something, just get rid of them. I’d do this for the sake of all humanity.

Powerful performances and rough passion bring intensity to Afterglow, currently making a splash Off-Broadway

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer AFTERGLOW THE LOFT DAVENPORT THEATRE OFF-BROADWAY (NYC) Now playing I don’t get to New York often, but when I do I see as much theater as I can. I saw the musical, Bandstand (Sept. 5) during its final week but instead of another musical like Hello Dolly, Dear Evan Hansen, or even Hamilton, I had much anticipation for an Off-Broadway show (Sept. 6) that is now the talk of the country and which has now been extended for two more months.

As the synopsis on the Afterglow website states: “Afterglow is a raw, one-act play exploring the emotional, intellectual, and physical connections between three men and the broader implications within their relationships.

“Josh and Alex, a married couple in an open relationship, invite Darius to share their bed one night. When a new intimate connection begins to form, all three men must come to terms with their individual definitions of love, loyalty, and trust as futures are questioned, relationships are shaken, and commitments are challenged.”

Afterglow, written and directed by S. Asher Gelman, is like watching queer cinema, being presented live with a compelling voyeuristic view of sex, intimacy and trust.

The play opens with a big bed on stage, and under the sheets we see three men, all naked, the two older men taking turns with Darius (Patrick Reilly), the younger man

in the group. Josh (Brandon Haagenson) is married to Alex (Joe Chisholm) and they want to solidify their relationship with a baby.

Later, when given an equal chance, Alex and Josh each have their way with Darius in the shower.

Both Josh and Alex want to keep Darius around, but Josh really falls for Darius and even gives him money for rent without telling Alex about the arrangement.

Trust and a level of maturity become issues, where Josh is clearly not ready to settle down and start a family, compared to Alex who is: So the topic is should sex in the relationship outweigh the trust and intimacy?

The set by Ann Beyerdorfer is interesting. In the first scene we have a bed, which is later transformed into a walk-in shower, and then the shower is reconfigured to become blocks that function as furniture: Is this a metaphor for blocks of a relationship?

Even though the ending was open ended (most of queer cinema seems to be these days), each actor had a “wow” moment.

With powerful performances of raw and deep emotion, this one-act play is surely going to fill up playhouses around the country. Hey, it would even make a great movie someday.

tle’s Women’s Chorus, performed their latest show, So You Think You Can Sing, last weekend. It was a hilarious spin on competitive singing programs like “The Voice,” “American Idol,” and “Eurovision.”

Celebrity guest judges Kimball Allen, Lee Callahan, and Abbey Roads were on hand to keep everything on the up and up. The send-up was written by Brick George.

The faux set up was that the two troupes are competing for a “Eurovision” type of show representing two faux countries. This admittedly silly premise allowed them to soar through exquisite renditions of original and classic songs. Director Eric Lane Barnes guided their performances with a fanciful flourish enlivening the audience.

Of course, there was a sprinkling of political references. One example was when both ensembles were singing the classic Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra/Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman song “Somethin’ Stupid” interspersed with members reading some of President Trump’s most notorious tweets, speech quotes, and secretly recorded entertainment show outtakes.

Other highlights of the luminous night included a flirty rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” a moving version of TLC’s “Waterfalls,” and a version of Heart’s “Alone” that was both heartbreaking and hilarious (via a video) at the same

time. But it was the solos that made the night a truly outstanding experience. A glorious version of Annie Lennox’s “Little Bird,” Patsy Cline’s “Crazy” (written by the legendary Willie Nelson), and a frank plea for empathy for the DACA Dreamers in the original ballad “Border Affair” by Eric Lane Barnes.

What’s next for these fine entertainers?

ACT Theatre presents award-winning playwright Lauren Yee’s King of the Yees

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer KING OF THE YEES ACT THEATRE Through October 1 Lauren Yee, the inventive playwright of Ching Chong Chinamen, has just been named the recipient of the 2017 Kesselring Prize for playwriting from the National Arts Club. She will receive a $25,000 award and the opportunity to reside for two weeks in the historic clubhouse of the National Arts Club in order to develop her work.

She’s also got her play, King of the Yees, running at ACT Theatre, with a lovely cast including Khanh Doan, Stan Egi, Ray Tagavilla, Annelih GH Hamilton, and Joseph Ngo. She has brought her work to Washington state on numerous occasions, most often to do workshops and attend retreats for writing like Hedgebrook. She feels like a local writer.

King of the Yees is an inventive and pseudo-autobiographical play. We begin by meeting “Lauren” and her “father” (Hamilton and Tagavilla) and then immediately find out that they are playing in a play Lauren has written, when Lauren (Doan) shows up with her father (Egi) to rehearsal. The play separates into back-and-forth scenes with the actors taking a break and Lauren becoming wrapped up in a quest to find her father when he goes missing.

Yee’s plays are often about American Chinese folk or grappling with assimilation versus cultural appreciation. This one included. Larry Yee, Lauren’s father, is pre-

sented as a larger-than-life character with strong ideas and connections to his ancestors. Lauren presents herself as a much more assimilated American who is not sure that she has that much time to worry about ancestors and honoring that culture. But her search, embodied in the play, leads her to reconsider her own connection to her father.

One of the most important themes and moments in the play has her realize that she loves someone she barely knows (her father). The way Yee gets there is through her imagination or a surreal journey into magic, which includes a Chinese dragon dancer, a sacred door to the Yee Universe, and gathering articles to create a ritual as dictated by Ancestors.

There is plenty to laugh at/with in the play, and a lot of color added by costume designer Christine Tschirgi. Inventively directed by Desdemona Chiang, with sleek set components by Carey Wong, and importantly helpful lighting (to determine where “outside rehearsal” and “inside” are)

by Jessica Trundy. It’s an easy, though perhaps a bit confusing journey to take.

It’s a bit unfortunate that the play must be staged in the round. When ACT was built, they made one of their mainstage spaces permanently in the round. “Round” works well for some productions, but frankly, it is a strain all too often for ACT productions. It leads to some weird blocking (actor movements) where they have to keep turning around and around to talk to various audience members and that leads to some aimless wandering on stage.

Opening night, the performances felt a bit on the “pushed” side – where Egi is still finding his way into the bombastic Larry, but was over-caricaturizing a bit. Given a

full week of performances, this cast will likely have found surer footing and a warmer connection with each other.

While a bit on the disjointed side, the play is meant to talk to non-Asian audiences and “explain” things we may not understand. For mostly-white Seattle, that lesson is well taken.

WET programs a good one with Teh Internet

year hacktivist group Anonymous emerged as a can’t-be-tamed digital authority with unexpected influence. This mercurial and irreverent tale follows the network’s pointed take down of the Church of Scientology and ponders the revolution of online global power. Called “liberating” and “enlightening” by The Guardian, Washington Ensemble Theatre will mount Tim Price’s smart and captivating play. Can you feel the lulz?”

I’m not sure what the description prepares you for, but embedded in the description is the fact that the play is “about” a real piece of actual Internet history. The way that playwright Price goes about telling that compelling history is incisive and interest-

ing and, as produced by director Wayne Rawley and the team at WET, it’s a very entertaining story.

Rawley infuses the piece with song and dance, with the help of choreographer Alyza DelPan-Monley, to great effect.

There is no such direction from Price about how to create the world he writes about. So Rawley and company have a bit of free rein to run with creative ideas.

In particular, Rawley decided against a whole bunch of laptops and people typing at each other! The play is written essentially about people across the world connecting with each other via the Internet, so they don’t meet and talk in person. Here, though,

that convention is stood on its head and a sort of freewheeling, meet-and-dissolve action is created. You might think of it as oil swirling around in water.

Infusing choreography, then, is an almost natural segue! It helps unite and break up the action and the dialogue and keep the play alive.

But the key aspect of the evening has to be the absolutely brilliant set/lighting work of Tristan Roberson. You have to see it to believe it. And so I’m not even going to describe it. You seriously have to see it.

No matter what else you think of the play, his contribution is mind-blowing, both in essential simplicity and also in bringing to life Internet actions such as coding. (I am not suggesting his work is simple. I am stating that what he creates, however complicated it was to create it, ends up as a sublime simplicity in storytelling.) The play cannot be the play without it.

As far as the subject matter and message, there’s a lot to ponder over what the “untamed” Internet has unleashed on the world. The history focuses on those who immediately grasped the opportunities presented, the teenagers who absorbed Internet usage like snacks, and then saw and used the almost unlimited power to roam around in packs of non-moral arbiters. There is little moral about the Internet, now, and this play helps explain why.

Gleefully violent American Assassin a jingoistic waste of time

There’s a moment in American Assassin that’s perfect. The film’s villain, a renegade former U.S. Navy officer known only by his nickname “Ghost” and portrayed by John Carter and Lone Survivor star Taylor Kitsch, has captured clandestine CIA operative, and his former superior, Stan Hurley and is using every interrogative torture tool at his disposal in order to find out some key information. Hurley is played by Michael Keaton; and what starts out as a somewhat quiet confrontation quickly escalates into something extraordinary. The Academy Award-nominated actor pulls out all the stops, returning to his Night Shift / Beetlejuice / Batman bag of tricks in order to go bug-eyed, unhinged, excitedly angry crazy

and it’s absolutely glorious, this five minute scene breathing life into a movie that, up until then, had found it to be in frustratingly short supply.

Based on the best-selling book by Vince Flynn, with a script credited to four different writers and direction by Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger, 12 and Holding), American Assassin is the story of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a typical all-American college kid, who, after a vacation with his girlfriend on the Spanish beaches of Ibiza becomes the site of a deadly terrorist massacre, spends the next 18 months tracking down the cell of cutthroats responsible for planning and orchestrating the attack.

Unbeknownst to him, Rapp has been under surveillance by CIA assistant director of covert operations Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan), and she’s been impressed by what this revenge-seeking youngster has been able to accomplish in so little time.

After scuttling his amateur efforts, she gets permission from CIA Director Stansfield (David Suchet) to send the vigilante to a facility run by the secretive Hurley. Kennedy wants him to train Rapp how to be a spy, believing the kid’s got what it takes to be a top-notch covert operative. But before he can finish training, an international incident involving stolen Russian plutonium has espionage agencies all around the globe on high alert, including those in Iran. When it becomes clear that the infamous Ghost is responsible for all this chaos, Kennedy drops Hurley and Rapp smack-dab in the middle of the carnage, the two men forced to figure out how to work together if they’re going to stop this homegrown terrorist from detonating a nuclear device.

The plot is basically a Jack Ryan thrill-

er that combines facets of Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears and crosses them with any of the Jason Bourne films, including the one without Matt Damon, The Bourne Legacy, but with the violence amplified to the same level as something like John Wick or Atomic Blonde. All of which would be fine if the film wasn’t so consistently stupid.

Rapp is a super spy seemingly overnight. The training sequences are over even before they have a chance to begin. Character complexity is apparently based entirely on just how steely a stare one actor can direct at another. Other than the obvious gut punch of the opening Ibiza massacre, there’s very little that tugs on a single emotional heartstring, and even the introduction of another covert agent named Annika (played exceedingly well by Iranian actress Shiva Negar) with her own reasons for wanting to hunt down Ghost can’t add a single thing substantive to the proceedings.

Cuesta admittedly does his best. His staging of a climactic fight on a runaway speedboat is exemplary, as is a mid-movie assault on the penthouse stronghold of an international arms dealer. I also liked how nasty the movie proved to be, the cutthroat nature of it all impressively surprising. Few thrillers are as willing to kill off characters, including random civilians, as cavalierly as this one does, and in that light it did remind me somewhat of John Frankenheimer’s final classic, the 1998 Robert De Niro barnburner, Ronin, a comparison I do not make lightly.

But none of that matters. Rapp is a weak hero, and as much as I’ve liked O’Brien in both Maze Runner adventures, watching him in this is like sitting in an empty room

with no windows watching the paint dry while wearing a blindfold. While he looks the part, the performance itself never connects, the fresh-faced rising star delivering a one-dimensional portrait of revengefueled determination that’s as obvious as it is tiresome. It does not help that Kitsch, other than in that one scene with Keaton, is an even weaker villain, and if not for his athletic physicality there would be little to nothing imposing about Ghost whatsoever.

Luckily, what the movie does have is Keaton, and while he’s not asked to do a lot (it’s pretty similar to what Kevin Costner was tasked with doing in 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), the veteran actor certainly makes the most of every scene he’s involved with. He is an imposing presence, both physically and mentally, making his vicious verbal explosion when Hurley comes face-to-face with Ghost have a weighty impact nothing else inside the film comes close to matching. He elevates the material to a different place each time his character is on the screen, Keaton proving once again just how underappreciated a talent he’s consistently been for going on four decades now.

Which makes it even more of a pity that American Assassin is as forgettable and disposable as it proves to be, the finished film a nondescript action frolic that goes nowhere of any interest no matter how timely certain elements fueling the narrative undeniably are. It’s an exercise in violently boring cinematic extremism, and while the volume of the patriotic rahrah histrionics might please some, as far as I was concerned the jingoistic stupidity of this particular movie proved to be nothing more than an unremarkable waste of time.

Gorily captivating Mother! an indescribable wonder

Darren Aronofsky’s latest mind-bending, psychologically dense feature Mother! is an indescribable piece of lurid pulp fiction that has to be seen to be believed. Black Swan? Noah? Pi? The Fountain? They’re all warm-hearted, easygoing walks in the park compared to this. Aronofsky has manufactured a tale that’s almost impossible to talk about, and that’s only partially due to the fact one doesn’t want to reveal any of its more twisted and unexpected secrets. No, the reason this film is so difficult to put into any sort of rational, straightforward context is because it’s certifiably insane, the loopy metaphorical psychosomatic textures of it all as unique as they are beyond description.

In a gorgeous old house out in the middle of nowhere, built in the middle of a large grassy field surrounded by gigantic trees on all sides, a poet (Javier Bardem) struggling with writer’s block leans on his beautiful wife (Jennifer Lawrence) for inspiration. She has determinedly restored the old

house back close to its former glory after a devastating fire came close to destroying it sometime in the past, every ounce of her sweat, passion and love going into her work as she strives to make the place feel like home once again. One day a man (Ed Harris) enters their lives mistakenly believing the house is a bed and breakfast, the poet graciously allowing him to stay after both have a gentle chuckle over the mistake. The next morning, a woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) shows up to join him, the two having been married for quite some time, their mutual affection for one another clear the moment she walks through the door.

I honestly don’t know what else to say.

I could attempt to compare everything that transpires next to films like Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby or Repulsion, but that doesn’t even begin to conceptualize the terrifyingly surreal craziness that ensues.

I could talk about how Aronofsky is emulating the look and feel of a motion picture like Louis Malle’s Black Moon, but as bona fide nuts as that psychedelic 1975 effort is it’s still nothing to the lunacy that transpires here. Other directorial giants like Jean-Luc Godard, David Cronenberg, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Takashi Miike, David Lynch or Pier Paolo Pasolini could all be mentioned here, as could up and coming talents like Shane Carruth or Gaspar Noé, but even then it’s safe to say Aronofsky is cutting an idiosyncratic path that’s still uniquely his own.

What can be said, I guess, is that nothing is as it appears in Mother!. While the characters have no official names, Bardem’s poet is referred to as Eli a time or two, leading one down a path where maybe they could determine a certain biblical story might be at play here. At the same time, it’s equally likely Harris and Pfeiffer could be stand-ins for Adam and Eve, their two male children (portrayed by Brian Gleeson and Domhnall Gleeson) having a murderously difficult time getting along with one anoth-

er. Or maybe Aronofsky has returned to the world of Noah, wrath and storms and fury and violence all raining down upon some who enter the house, especially as things build towards their epically heated climax.

Yet, maybe there’s nothing biblical going on here at all. It could be that Aronofsky is looking at marriage from an entirely new light, utilizing metaphor and nuance to speak about the difficulties of maintaining a relationship over a number of years. Or he could be analyzing the ins and outs of parenthood, the tumultuous mixture of emotions that assaults parents as they attempt to raise their children into adulthood. Maybe it’s all even bigger than that, the director looking at the world, the way so many laugh in the face of science, cavalierly play havoc with the environment, use religious fervor for their own personal gain and otherwise go about destroying the very planet they purport to love without ever giving any thought to the generations who will wallow in misery after following in their footsteps.

What I do know is that Lawrence, an Academy Award-winner for Silver Linings Playbook and a four-time nominee since 2010, has maybe never been better than she is here, delivering a performance of such emotional depth and breadth watching her roam about this house as the titular character is revelatory. She’s mesmerizing, and no matter how strange things around the actress became it was never a question that this woman was the heart and soul around which all events transpiring inside this story revolved. Lawrence finds ways to bring forth emotions that are almost always unexpected, things building to a maelstrom of rage, revulsion and regret that left me amazed.

The best bits might be when she and Pfeiffer share the screen together. The Batman Returns and The Fabulous Baker Boys siren might not have a lot of screen time, but holy cow does she make the most out of every second Aronofsky gifts the three-

time Oscar nominee. She and Lawrence are symbiotic perfection, the scenes where the two toss lines back and forth at one another truly spectacular. It’s hard to imagine the movie being nearly successful as it is without either of them, and as great as Bardem and Harris might be, these two women are undeniably the main reason Mother! ends up producing the emotional kick to the head it ultimately does during its final moments.

Yet this is Aronofsky’s show, there’s never any doubt about that. As dazzling as Matthew Libatique’s (Money Monster) camerawork might be, as dynamic as Andrew Weisblum’s (The East) editing is and as magnificent as production designer Philip Messina’s (The Hunger Games) interiors are, this is a director’s showcase, make no mistake. Aronofsky is at the top of his game, controlling every second with a confident virtuosity that’s staggering, and as pretentiously indecipherable as much of this can sometimes come off, there’s always the sense that everything being showcased is exactly as the director intends no matter how obtusely weird as various elements might initially appear.

I’m not sure who Mother! is for. I have no idea how audiences will react to it. For my part, I’m still sitting here days later stunned into silence trying to figure out exactly what it is I want to say. What I do know is that I hope people do take the time to see Aronofsky’s latest, that they screw their courage to the sticking place and go in blindly to the film ready and willing to see how everything the director splashes across the screen affects them come what may. This is a movie conceived by a master cineaste who knows how to surprise and amaze in a manner so few other filmmakers apparently do, the creative afterbirth left in this picture’s wake as gorily disgusting as it is spiritually magnificent.

Emmys 2017: McKinnon and Waithe among winners on a night highlighted by diversity

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer PRIME TIME EMMYS MICROSOFT THEATER LOS ANGELES September 17 Kate McKinnon and Lena Waithe emerged victorious on Sunday evening’s telecast of the Primetime Emmy Awards, which honored the best in television programming of the past season. Although they were the only LGBT artists who took home statuettes during the ceremony, held at LA’s Microsoft Theater, the winners’ list was the most diverse in the awards’ 69-year history.

McKinnon captured her second consecutive Emmy for her work on Saturday Night Live, playing various characters on the variety sketch show, from Hillary Clinton to Kellyanne Conway. Shortly after presenter and Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez called out her name, McKinnon embraced her girlfriend Jackie Abbott before heading up to the stage. It was the first major public appearance for the couple.

Waithe became the first black woman to win for comedy series writing, an award she shared with Aziz Ansari; they both star

in the acclaimed Netflix series Master of None and specifically earned Emmys for penning the Thanksgiving episode of the show’s second season, where Denise (Waithe) tells her childhood friend Dev (Ansari) and mom (Angela Bassett) that she’s gay.

“I love you all and last but certainly not least my LGBTQIA family,” Waithe said excitedly and emotionally during her acceptance speech. “I see each and every one of you. The things that make us different, those are our superpowers. Every day when you walk out the door and put on your imaginary cape and go out there and conquer the world – because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it.”

She went on to say, “And for everybody out there that showed so much love for this episode, thank you for embracing a little Indian boy from South Carolina and a little queer black girl from the South Side of Chicago. We appreciate it more than you could ever know.”

In an interview with Out magazine earlier this year, Waithe recalled telling her own mother she was lesbian. “The thing about coming out is that you never want to experience it ever again.”

a comedy series; the highly praised show Atlanta. He later accepted a second award for Lead Actor and thus became only the second black person to win in the category; Robert Guillame took home the award for Benson in 1985. Glover is also a hip-hop performer who goes by the name Childish Gambino.

Riz Ahmed was another history maker, becoming the first South Asian to win a lead acting award, for his performance in the limited series The Night Of. The 34 year-old, who also appeared on Girls this past season, was born to Pakistani parents who migrated to England in the 1970s.

RuPaul’s Drag Race shockingly lost the Reality-Competition Program award to The Voice, but Drag Race matriarch RuPaul Charles, who claimed the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program prize a week ago at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony, did participate in a brief comedic sketch with Stephen Colbert, who hosted the main telecast (not Jimmy Kimmel, as I incorrectly stated in my preview).

Women also dominated the Emmys, as two female-themed shows won big on Sunday, The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies. The former is based on the best-selling book by Margaret Atwood and tells the stories of women made to serve high-rank-

ing men and their wives as handmaids, or rather bear children for them against their will. As expected, Elisabeth Moss won the Lead Actress-Drama statuette, while Ann Dowd delightedly nabbed Supporting Actress-Drama honors. The Handmaid’s Tale also earned Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series, Writing (Bruce Miller) and Directing, in which Reed Morano beat out a stellar list of nominees that included two fellow female directors, Kate Dennis and Lesli Linka Glatter, and four heavyweight TV-film male directors, Vince Gilligan, Stephen Daldry, Jonathan Nolan and The Duffer Brothers.

Visceral First They Killed My Father a triumphant story of survival

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER Now playing Growing up in Phnom Penh, 5-year-old Cambodian Loung Ung (Srey Moch Sareum) has what many would consider a perfect life. Her loving father (Phoeung Kompheak) has a job working for the government that has allowed their family to prosper, and as such the little girl is as happy and as carefree as a child her age could ever hope to be.

But Loung’s Pa knows darkness is coming, and when the Khmer Rouge invades the capital he knows he must do whatever possible to keep his family safe. Fleeing into the countryside, for a while they find sanctuary [***move for a while here] with members of their extended family. Yet the Khmer Rouge is unstoppable, and after the village votes them out in order to hopefully save their own citizens, Loung and her entire family are quickly captured. Her father and mother (Sveng Socheata) sent to work in the fields as glorified slaves, the young girl is placed in a class to be indoctrinated into the beliefs of the new regime.

As Loung grows older, she is also turned out into the fields as a laborer, always maintaining the belief her family will be reunited and she will survive to see happiness once again.

It will likely come as no great shock to anyone that Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father isn’t for the faint of heart.

While lightness and love do enter the picture, mostly this adaptation of Ung’s bestselling 2000 memoir is an emotionally exhausting journey that strands the viewer in something akin to a constant state of shock. Reminiscent of Roland Joffé’s Oscar-winning 1984 classic The Killing Fields, this is still a devastating drama that builds to its uplifting coda of resilience, sacrifice and survival with dedicated tenacity, Jolie in the process delivering her finest film as a director yet.

In the majority of the scenes, young Sareum is a revelation. She is tasked with doing almost all of the heavy lifting, the child actress anchoring things with apparent ease. Sareum slips into Loung’s shoes effortlessly, her ability to convey a variety of emotions in the blink of an eye wondrous. I was struck by how playful she could be only to have unimaginable terror and doubt wash over her with startling restraint just a few seconds later, all of which makes the youngster’s long walk to freedom all the more empowering.

As for Jolie, she’s been a much stronger filmmaker right out of the box than I tend to think most give her credit for. Her debut In the Land of Blood and Honey might have been unrelentingly depressing and bleak, but that didn’t make it any less assertively made. Unbroken has a lot

of problems, so many I’m not even going to start relisting them here, but it also had undeniable moments of greatness which allowed the triumphant story at its center to resonate more than it ever would have had the story been told by someone with a less steady hand. As for her exceedingly European Beyond the Sea where she co-starred with her ex-husband Brad Pitt, that movie is aging rather well in my opinion, and had some elder male cinematic statesmen like Bernardo Bertolucci or Alain Resnais helmed it I can’t help but think it would be held in much higher regard than it currently is.

Even so, Jolie has learned a lot and grown as a filmmaker with each successive feature. This is her most mesmerizing effort yet, and the fact so much of it is presented without dialogue and yet the film retains its visceral enthralling power throughout makes what she has accomplished all the more impressive. Still, Jolie does like to overplay her hand, at least a little bit, and there are a handful of moments where she does beat the viewer over the head with just how bleakly abhorrent Loung’s situation undeniably was. But these moments are few and far between, and I can’t say any of them ended up bothering me all that much.

Granted, the Cambodian genocide by the Khmer Rouge is hardly the stuff of rainbows and lollypops, so expecting the director to gloss over parts of the story or underplay just how horrific things were

for the youngster and her family isn’t just impractical, it would have been a gross dereliction of directorial duty on Jolie’s part as a storyteller had she done so. While this movie might not have any single scene that is as instantaneously impactful and shocking as the one in The Killing Fields where Dr. Haing S. Ngor realizes he’s escaping to freedom by walking over a never-ending field of human remains, that does not mean there were not a number of moments where my heart leapt out of my chest. What Loung goes through over her years of struggle and sacrifice is unbearably extraordinary, Jolie doing a fine job maintaining perspective no matter how upsetting and unrelentingly ghastly events oftentimes became.

First They Killed My Father does move at its own methodical pace, and I do wish I’d seen this film in Toronto or during its theatrical run instead via a screener, cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle’s (Slumdog Millionaire) astonishing visual compositions deserving to be viewed on the largest screen possible. Still, Jolie’s latest is a strong adaptation of Loung’s mind-blowing story, all of it anchored by a performance from Sareum that’s simply marvelous. This is a very good movie, and here’s my hope people make the choice to see it right away.

Second Kingsman a violently offensive sequel

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Now playing Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle features a crackerjack climax set inside the 1950s all-American wonderland created by drug lord Poppy Adams (Julianne Moore) in the remote jungles of Cambodia. Kingsman agents Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Merlin (Mark Strong) and a resurrected Galahad (Colin Firth) descend upon the compound in order to save a substantial percentage of the world’s population from annihilation, and once they set foot in her realm, dubbed “Poppyland,” one of the best action sequences of 2017 spectacularly ensues.

And I honestly could have cared less. A sequel to 2014’s surprise smash hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, Vaughn’s followup is a tone-deaf, oftentimes frustrating, frequently insulting and moderately offensive exercise in gruesome misogynistic excess that’s made almost as if to convince pubescent 13-year-old boys it’s perfectly okay to treat women as ditzy dolls and little else. While aspects of the film are oddly commendable, most notably the fact that Eggsy didn’t treat Princess Tilde (Hanna Alström) as a throwaway sex object after the first film and is in a committed relationship with her a full two years later, that doesn’t excuse all of the places where things go objectionably off the rails.

Case in point, there’s one extended bit where agents attempt to plant a tracking device on a female suspect. But the only place to implant this item is to slip a finger up underneath the target’s skirt where the sun doesn’t shine, and not from the back (not that this would make things any better). It’s all played for laughs, but in reality it’s plum revolting; and while Vaughn and frequent collaborator Jane Goldman (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) try to soften things by making Eggsy ambivalent about the task at hand, if anything this only exacerbates that grotesque nastiness of the situation a substantial degree.

But this is the whole movie. It’s ugly on a level that’s mind-boggling for a Hollywood studio production, the way it treats characters ranging from returnee Kingsman agent Roxy (Sophie Cookson), to American newcomer Ginger (Halle Berry), so casually

sexist it’s like watching a movie from the 1950s, not just one with a theme park drug lair modeled after the era. While the first film toyed with these elements in a fashion that didn’t distract from how solid other elements proved to be, this one drowns in them to the point they made me continually squirm in my seat, part of me hating myself for sitting there for all 141 minutes of the darn thing seeing how it would all play out.

Still, Vaughn is a talented filmmaker, one who knows how to get good (to sometimes great) performances out of his actors while also staging crackerjack action sequences overflowing in imagination and adrenaline. While nothing in this sequel approaches the level of cutthroat bloodthirsty brilliance of the church massacre scene from the original, that doesn’t make any of the central set pieces any less superb. There’s a great bit in the snow outside a hidden mountain cabin where Pedro Pascal, playing another American agent codenamed Whiskey, takes out an army of soldiers with a six-shooter and lasso, while an opening bit inside a Kingsman cab is so giddily insane it’s downright spectacular.

Then there is that closing act inside the exquisitely designed and realized Poppyland. From George Richmond’s (Unlocked) magnificent camerawork, to Eddie Hamilton’s (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) sensational editing, to the wonderfully vibrant performances of Egerton and Firth, the whole sequence is magnificent. Vaughn skillfully choreographs and orchestrates the action with dexterous aplomb, everything culminating in a way that pays off an early gag from the film’s first act in a manner that is gleefully gruesome yet also gorily satisfying.

None of which allowed the distaste I felt watching Kingsman: The Golden Circle to dissipate in any noticeable fashion. From the moment the plot gets fully set in motion when Poppy declares war on the Kingsman, forcing Eggsy and Merlin to flee to Kentucky to meet their U.S. counterparts, the Statesman, where they make the acquaintance of Whiskey, Ginger, Tequila (Channing Tatum) and Champagne (Jeff Bridges), I was so angry about the interior mechanics of what Vaughn and Goldman were putting forth no amount of visual razzle-dazzle was going to suppress my anger. Even Moore’s agreeably eccentric performance, so full of joie de vivre and capricious psychotic menace, isn’t enough to save the day, and as terrific a villain as Poppy might be she deserves a movie a heck of a lot better than this one disappointingly proves to be.

Absurdly imaginative LEGO Ninjago a playful hoot

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE Now playing In Ninjago, every day is the perfect day for the evil Garmadon (voiced by Justin Theroux) to attack with his mechanized shark-themed forces in an attempt to take over and rule the city. Standing in his way each and every time are a team of mechanized Ninjas, all given code names representing the Earth’s elemental powers like Water, Lightning and Fire. Unbeknownst to this evil warlord, his own teenage son Lloyd (Dave Franco), a.k.a. Green Ninja, is the leader of this force, his best friends from high school in reality his only friends, thanks to being the son of the “Worst Guy in the World,” Cole (Fred Armisen), Jay (Kumail Nanjiani), Kai (Michael Peña), Nya (Abbi Jacobson) and Zane (Zach Woods) the other members of the team.

Going against the orders of the group’s wise teacher Master Wu (Jackie Chan) and fed up that his dad, as evil as he might be, refuses to recognize him as anything other than an afterthought and rarely as his son, Lloyd unleashes the Ultimate Weapon.

Unfortunately, that brings the giant cat Meowthra to Ninjago, destroying everything in its furry wake. Now, forced to join forces with Garmadon, Master Wu and the young ninjas head into the forbidden forest in order to find the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon, needed to drive this monstrous new threat from their beloved city. As they make this dangerous trek, all of the ninjas learn things about one another they never knew beforehand, while Lloyd and his evil father discover a familial bond that very well could change the course of both their lives forever.

After the massive success of The LEGO Movie in 2014, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros was going to do all they could to milk that box office cow as frequently and as often as they could. Just this past February we saw the successful release of The LEGO Batman Movie, that animated comedy earning solid reviews and audience raves in pretty much equal measure. Now comes The LEGO Ninjago Movie, inspired by the long-running “Ninjago” animated television series, and from my understanding far more comedic and ridiculous than the show is. It’s going to be a pretty substantial hit, just like its predecessors. More importantly, it’s actually pretty darn terrific, too.

Featuring a story and script credited to nine different writers, asking for any sort of narrative cohesion here isn’t a good idea. Same time, like a great piece of sketch comedy, all of the numerous vignettes feeding the central storyline are so consistently amusing, the fact all of this goes way beyond nonsensical into the realm of outright absurdity isn’t as big a problem as it might otherwise have been. The jokes fly fast and furious, both verbal and visual, and it will likely take multiple viewings to even begin to catch the majority of them.

I admit to having a giant grin on my face all the way through, even during the liveaction prologue featuring Chan as a kindly shopkeeper telling a tale of heroism, sacrifice and forgiveness to a wide-eyed youngster. The movie is just a heck of a lot of fun, and to my mind is an even more successful piece of family-friendly pop entertainment than The LEGO Batman Movie ended up proving to be.

I love the vocal cast, especially Chan, Franco and Theroux. They all appear to be having a blast bringing these characters to life. Better, their energy and excitement jumps off the screen. Theroux, in particular, is a total hoot. The stuff he says (as well as the way he says it) is consistently hysterical, some of his off-the-cuff asides worthy of a gigantic belly laugh all by themselves.

But the whole cast has their moments, especially Jacobson and Nanjiani, while Olivia Munn has a grand time portraying Lloyd’s bubbly overprotective mother Koko, a confidently determined woman with a superheroic past all her own.

It’s all undeniably silly, and some of the extended gags lose a little of their punch as the film progresses, most notably a joke involving Garmadon’s never-ending series of generals getting fired out of a volcano for not coming up with good ideas for world domination. But visually there’s so much going on there was always something that drew my attention in a positive way, and I honestly feel like this latest LEGO offering is the most fantastically and imaginatively animated one yet. The LEGO Ninjago Movie made me giggle, start to finish, and to my mind saying anything more than that just isn’t necessary.
