Did we match? Are yours the same? Well, chances are the Seattle Men’s Chorus will perform my favorite AND your favorite songs by these legendary artists when they present “Bette, Babs & Beyonce” at McCaw Hall over Pride weekend later this month. The show will also feature music by other beloved divas, including Cher, Diana Ross and Katy Perry – and yes, there will be dancing and it will be a spectacle – so we’re talking a really Gay old time! It’s something fun to do with a group of friends around Pride before heading out to the bars.

The chorus will perform two concerts, only one each night, June 23 and 24, beginning at 8pm. Tickets, priced between $25-$78, are available now at www.seattlechoruses. org, by phone at (206) 388-1400, or at the box office (M-F, 11am-6pm).

One of the benefits of living in Seattle is lots of free live music, especially during the summer months. The upcoming South Lake Union Block Party will feature performances by Hey Marseilles, Ayron Jones and the Way, Eldridge Gravy & the Court Supreme, Evening Bell and Bread & Butter. The one day all-ages event, happening August 11 from 12 noon to 11pm, will also include food trucks, artisan vending booths, a beer garden for the adults, a printyour-own-free poster station and more entertaining activities for everyone. Proceeds from the SLU Block Party will be donated to Mary’s Place, a local organization that empowers homeless women, children and families to reclaim their lives by providing shelter, nourishment, housing and employment resources, healing and hope in a safe community. Last year’s Block Party took place in an enclosed area adjacent to Denny Way and Westlake Avenue, where it’s expected to be staged again this time.

A few other new shows to give you a heads up about. The Shins have been added

to the Marymoor Park Summer Concert Series lineup, set to perform on September 23. The Piano Guys have added a second performance at McCaw Hall on October 2, which means they’ll appear at the Seattle Center venue on back-to-nights; they were already booked for October 3. The War on Drugs have also added a second show at the Moore Theatre on October 10, the band is playing the night before, as well, a previously announced date on October 9.

And the Tedeschi Trucks Band, featuring two standout American acts, Derek Trucks Band and Susan Tedeschi, will play on November 4.

Finally, don’t forget to cheer on the Divine M this Sunday evening, June 11 on the 71st Tony Awards. Midler is the frontrunner to win the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, for her acclaimed performance in Hello Dolly! She recently captured the equivalent prize at the Drama Desk Awards. At press time, however, she was not confirmed as a performer on the telecast, only as a presenter.

It’s seems like ages since Arcade Fire played in Seattle, and it probably has been.

Whenever it was, I was there and it was an awesome show. The Grammy-winning ensemble is indeed headed back to the Emerald City again, set to appear at Key Arena on October 15 as part of its “Infinite Content” tour, promoting the band’s forthcoming fifth studio album Everything Now featuring the leadoff single, which is also the title track. The world tour officially launched this week in Barcelona and will stop in several European cities before trekking across the Atlantic for a series of dates in Chicago, Ottawa, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Dallas, Las Vegas, Denver and Kansas City, to name a few. Pacific Northwest Ballet presents three charming premieres in “Pictures at an Exhibition”

by Sharon Cumberland SGN A&E Writer PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET “PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION” MCCAW HALL June 2-4 & 9-11 Pacific Northwest Ballet ends its season with three charming premieres that come from the fertile field of the New York City Ballet. Artistic Director Peter Boal, who was a dancer at NYCB from childhood to his years as a principal dancer, has brought all his expertise and background to Seattle, making the best of that world available to us.

The dances in this program were all made for NYCB – premiering in 1968, 1979, and 2014 – so here in Seattle we can see the progression of choreography that they, and now PNB, have mastered. It was a wonderful, colorful coming together of expert dancing, beautiful settings, and gorgeous music.

“La Source” (1968) Choreographer: George Balanchine Music: Leo Delibes, Naila Walz (1878) What could be more beautiful and charming than two dancers whose life-long training is invisible except in the form of perfect, flirtatious movement? Leta Biasucci and Benjamin Griffiths danced as if the world were ideal, lovely, and young – and for a moment they made you feel that way, too. The deep blue scrim set off the dancer’s tangerine costumes, and Delibes’ swaying, waltzy music took you to Dreamland. And just so you know Dreamland is as exciting as it is alluring, the corps de ballet of eight peach-clad girls, led by the sparkling Angelica Generosa, showed the perfect synchronicity and flashing technique that characterizes Balanchine and this first-class

troupe of dancers. Rely on Mr. B. to make the world a better place, at least for the enticing moments you see his work on stage.

“Opus 19/The Dreamer” (1979) Choreographer: Jerome Robbins Music: Sergei Prokifiev, Violin Concerto No. 1 (1915-17) Dyland Wald was the star of this brilliant, modern ballet made by choreographer Jerome Robbins. We think of Robbins as the jazzy show-biz inventor of the American brand of classical dance, but here we see a thoughtful probing of the secret life of dreams – a different, more disturbing Dreamland than the beauty of “La Source.”

Wald, who is the personification of the “beautiful boy” of daydreams, dances with elegant edginess. His movement is expressive, pure, and sharply defined as he moves through stages of anxiety and engagement with his dream-vision, danced by Sara Ricard Orza, and six dream-couples dressed

in midnight blue. Robbins’ use of the classic ballet vocabulary to make the soft hard, the curved angular, and the predictable surprising was a lesson in how the familiar world can appear strange in dreams.

This dance was full of marvelous moments – a line of men standing in second position – that difficult pose with both legs in flat, 90° angles as if the torso grew out of a half-rectangle – a group of eight dancers forming behind the dreamer as if he had sixteen arms – a scatter of men twirling in place with arms at their sides like so many drills boring holes in the stage. The chorus was brilliant in this dance, showcasing a range of requirements that would make any one of them a star. But it was Wald’s afternoon – a dancer with such individuality and expressive movement that no amount of weird and wonderful action in the background could take your eyes away from him. The final moment of this dance was deeply satisfying, when the dreamer and his partner end in an embrace where each bends their cheek into the other’s hand.

This masterful dance gave me even more respect for Robbins than I had already, while bringing a corps de ballet dancer, Dylan Wald, into a spotlight that he inhabits with power, grace, and drama.

We’ve all heard this music since we were in grade school (at least kids in my generation heard it in grade school) and we can imagine promenading from one picture to another as the music describes something sinuous, something funny, something beautiful, and so forth. But not in Ratmansky’s version. In this dance we’re given one fabulous, abstract picture by Kandinsky – riots of colorful circles and squares that move and change like a tic-tac-toe board on psychedelic drugs. On top of that we have ten dancers in pajamas – girls in baby-dolls, boys in, well, pajamas – that are color-coordinated with their background, making them somewhat invisible unless their jammies fly up in the air and you see their legs. Sorry for the tone – I didn’t care for the costumes at all, nor was I very enthralled with the episodic interpretation of each piece of music as it

drew one, two, or several dancers forward to embody the sound picture. It was a lot like interpretive dance – seemingly spontaneous, wild arms and legs, rolling on the ground, shape-making without reference to any form that could make a picture in your mind. I search my notes for something interesting to report to you, but come across my scribbled comment: “In truth I find it boring.”

However, my dance buddy loved it.

This dance was her favorite of the entire afternoon. She is my niece, who is taking dancing lessons and has, up until now, only seen “Nutcracker” at Christmas time. She is fabulously talented (isn’t everyone’s little niece?) and I was waiting for a “real” ballet to come along that she might be able to sit through and see what dance is really all about. I thought I had hit the jackpot when “La Source” came on – who wouldn’t want to be in a perfect world of waltzing beauty with a handsome prince? Then I thought she would love the jazz and tumbling wildness of “Opus 19/ The Dreamer.” But for her it was all about the beautiful colors and the rollicking fun of Ratmansky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” She understood it. She could see herself in it. She wanted to dance in it. Which is to say, folks, take my opinions with a grain of salt and listen to my seven-year-old niece. Some dances, even grown-up dances, are as much for the children as for us sophisticated balletomanes.

PNB’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” is at McCaw Hall through June 11 and it’s a wonderful, dreamy place to spend an afternoon or evening.

the first iteration of this full evening of dance, “Approaching Ecstasy,’’ based on eighteen poems by Greek poet Constantine Cavafy. I wish I had seen it, because then I would have the context needed to understand how an early work – when redone five years later – can result in a masterwork.

What was presented to the audience on June 2nd was a fully-conceived, gorgeously executed, complex, and intriguing masterpiece, the like of which I have not seen from this company in the three years I’ve been attending.

This leap in achievement didn’t come as a complete surprise – Wevers has been steadily evolving as a choreographer, and his supporters grow in numbers, making possible an important, exquisitely staged dance with live musical performance. His seven-person company has been loyal over the years, and knows his style and requirements, so that the execution of his vision is precise. In addition, the company’s studio time has increased with financial support, giving Wevers a generous seven weeks to re-conceive and restage the dance, working with composer and translator Eric Banks to re-develop the work together in light of their growing maturity and mastery of their disciplines. These two artists are at the top of their game. Add a master poet, a compelling theme, and a dance troupe of unerring excellence and you have a work that can stand together with the great modern dance-makers of our time: Mark Morris, Crystal Pite, Nacho Duato, Jessica Lang.

I wasn’t entirely surprised – and yet I was happily surprised, and very moved.

The compelling theme of this work, as expressed in the poems of Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933), is of a closeted gay man living in a time and place where homosexual expression is a criminal offense.

The man is a poet of prodigious lyrical powers, which means that the struggle, alienation, longing, and sorrow of his dilemma is described in a way that makes gay people sigh in recognition and heterosexual people understand – possibly for the first time – the cruelty of condemning young people to lives of alienation and loneliness.

What Wevers and Banks have done with

this theme is truly unforgettable.

Eric Banks translated eighteen of Cavafy’s poems and set them to music, both in English and in the original Greek.

Though Cavafy is famous for poems about ancient culture, such as “Ithaca,” and “Waiting for the Barbarians,” his later poems about his homosexual encounters are, as W.H. Auden says in his introduction to the collected poems, “exceptionally honest” – poems that meditate on the beauty of young men, the secret glance, the backroom encounter, the post-coital haze, the suffering imposed by secrecy and fear of exposure, and the memory of wonderful sex that brightens later years.

Cavafy’s honesty and beauty are embedded in Banks’ multi-layered music, played by the Skyros quartet and harpist Melissa Achten Klausner. Together they create the effect of a river of strings fed by the raindrops (or teardrops) of the pizzicato harp.

The Esoterics – a chorus of 33 men and women – perform the impressive feat of singing the poems in both English and Greek, while half of them actually participate in the choreography. The audience can understand exactly what’s going on without the aid of supertitles because Banks has set the English translations so that each syllable is sung in unison. When the same poem is

sung again in Greek, Banks’ music breaks into dramatic and haunting harmonies.

The dance itself is masterfully supported by Michael Mazzola’s lighting that makes paths across the stage and zig-zags on the floor, as well as sets by Casey Curran that appear to be simple panels and yet morph into walls, closets, rooms, mirrors, and mazes. The simple metaphor of the suit and bowler hat, worn by both the chorus and the dancers, suggests the façade of social correctness. At key moments the dancers strip down, tear their clothes off, undress each other and redress themselves in a struggle between the demands of society and the demands of the self.

Perhaps the most dramatic change in the choreography from the first iteration of this dance in 2012 to the present is the addition of a muse – the personification of love, beauty, sex – who is cleverly dressed by costumer Mark Zappone in a leotard covered in men’s ties that act as fancy feathers, as though this god/goddess is a fabulous, exotic bird. Brilliantly danced by Tory Peil, the muse provides a through-line linking all the poems and their corresponding dances together into a coherent and ever more complex whole.

and unfamiliar in its unspooling of endless invention, as though his vocabulary – which we have seen at its most promising in “Brahms in Tights” and at its least promising in “A Disagreeable Tale of Duplicity” – had suddenly deepened and expanded.

He shows mastery in every combination of dance – solos, duets, trios, and movements engaging the entire troupe as well as singers moving across the stage in echoing patterns. The most astonishing section, for me, was a quartet in which a central figure is undressed/exposed and manipulated through ever-more-complex movements by three men in suits. The undressed man is carried, flown, folded, rolled, and twisted through a remarkable sequence of movements that form variations on the theme of social constraint.

Another brilliant passage in an evening full of brilliant passages was the duet danced to Cavafy’s poem “In the Vestibule” in which two dancers execute perfect synchronization as “an exceedingly beautiful boy, a tailor’s assistant” who dances with his own reflection in a mirror. We are convinced, by the end of this extraordinary dance, of the poet’s observation that “…the mirror glowed / With quiet contentment; for in that short moment, / The long forgotten mirror had found perfect beauty.”

“Approaching Ecstasy” is an important work that seamlessly combines classical and choral music, poetry and dance, and composition and choreography in an extremely moving account of closeted gay life both in Cavafy’s time and, sadly, in our own time. It is a work of timely and timeless beauty, and a very great artistic accomplishment for everyone involved in its development and presentation. This is a work that should be widely seen, not only for its mastery of so many art forms, but for its profound insight into the sad burden of injustice suffered by gay people past and present.

I think it’s also appropriate here to give a shout to Kathy Alvord Gerlich who made this re-conception of an important work possible. Ms. Gerlich is the daughter of one of Seattle’s most generous and beloved philanthropists, Dr. Ellsworth Alvord who, with his wife Nancy, not only endowed chairs in neuropathology at the UW medical school and Seattle Children’s Hospital, but supported Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony, ACT, Henry Art Museum and a host of other arts organizations in Seattle.

Dr. Alvord passed away in 2010 but his children continue in their generous footsteps. We who love the arts in Seattle owe this family a debt of gratitude that should be recognized, not only by mayors and people who hand out certificates and trophies, but by us, the ordinary folk, whose lives are enriched every time we attend something wonderful, like Whim W’Him’s “Approaching Ecstasy.” Thank you, Ms. Gerlich, from a grateful audience member.

As I ask myself what the next step is for a masterpiece with limited exposure, I wonder if it could be produced in a venue such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival – an international gathering of dance companies in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. Ted Shawn, a modern dancer whose all-male dance company brought attention to the special role of men in dance, founded it in 1933. I think Ted Shawn would have loved to shine a spotlight on “Approaching Ecstasy” and to help garner the support it needs to be seen more widely.

At any rate, we in Seattle are most fortunate that Whim W’Him is here, and that we get to see a great work of art in our own front yard. “Approaching Ecstasy” is on for two more performances at Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center: Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10. Don’t miss it! It’s a milestone of dance, music, and poetry in perfect harmony, that tells the story of love that should – by any standard of fairness – dare to speak its name.

LGBTQ leaders address hate crimes in Seattle Before the PULSE nightclub massacre in Orlando – the deadliest shooting and worst hate crime in U.S. history – LGBTQ people were already the most likely targets of hate crimes in America. Seattle is famous for our active LGBTQ community, but we are not exempt. In 2015, 72 hate crimes against LGBTQ people were reported to the Seattle Police Department – double from the previous year. Nationwide, bias-motivated killings of LGBTQ people are rising, with people of color massively overrepresented as victims.

What can we do to combat violence and support justice from within? At this panel, hear and engage with leaders in the LGBTQ community and explore ways the community can work to change the root causes of harm and oppression, and ultimately end anti-LGBTQ violence.

This panel discussion aims to evoke conversation on the subject matter highlighting the voices of its panelists: • Lady, a Community Engagement Advocate at The NW Network for bi, trans, lesbian, and gay survivors of abuse.

• Ricardo Salvador Gonzalez, who has recently taken the lead of the Immigrant, Refugee, and Undocumented Outreach program at Seattle Counseling Service, a

unique resource that empowers individuals with intersecting identities.

• Priya Rai, the Queer Network Program Coordinator at API Chaya, which supports survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

• Olga Maria, an LGBTQ hate crime survivor.

She has performed with some of the great powerhouses of stage: Patti LuPone, Elaine Stritch, and Bernadette Peters, only to name a few. She currently tackles another one of the great challenging female role of theatre, Sally Bowles. As the hit musical Cabaret comes through Seattle, the Seattle Gay News caught up with this incredible, strong woman.

Eric Andrews-Katz: Who were your

earliest influences in becoming a performer?

Leigh Ann Larkin: Oh, definitely Patti LuPone for sure, and Bernadette Peters, too. Both of these women were super influential for me.

Andrews-Katz: Growing up in Pittsburg, what was the show that gave you the “theatre bug”?

Larkin: I think during my junior year of high school we had a musical review of sorts. I got to get up on stage and sing songs in front of people, do solos and such, and just loved it! I thought it was awesome, and I felt completely at home. I kind of knew from there that I should look into it more seriously, audition for more of the professional shows around the city.

Andrews-Katz: While in Gypsy, which person was more intimidating to work with, librettist Arthur Laurents or Diva Patti LuPone?

Larkin: Arthur for sure! Arthur was a

very strong presence, and super cool, but he was also a genius. I think that even Patti felt that as well. He was an incredibly director and got what he wanted out of the artist. He was very specific, and not a lot of directors are or can be, and I think that’s why the show was so incredible. Since he wrote the musical’s script, he knew exactly what he wanted.

Andrews-Katz: You appeared in another Sondheim musical in 2009. Do you prefer playing the theatrically ambitious Dainty June of Gypsy, or the sexually ambitious Petra of A Little Night Music?

Larkin: That’s such a hard distinction.

They are both so different. Both are very strong women, which I tend to gravitate towards. I don’t know if I can answer this.

They both have their own special qualities.

Andrews-Katz: Was it difficult learning the lyrics or getting the rhythm of Petra’s patter-song, “The Miller’s Son”?

Larkin: Yes! It was very much so. That one you can’t space out on, not even for a second, because you’ll get lost. I would go over the score every night, before going on stage, to sing that song. It’s so specific with the melody and the rhymes. It’s so quick that if you miss a beat, it’s too late; the train has already left the station.

Andrews-Katz: Is Sally Bowles a talented woman?

Larkin: That’s debatable. The thing about Sally is that many people have opinions about her, and that’s because she can become so many different things. She’s specific to her wants, and there’s nothing to support that she has to be one way or the other [regarding talent]. It’s implied that she is not talented, but with all other underlying baggage, she has her own personality quirks as well. Who is to say she isn’t talented? I think that’s why she works both ways and it depends on the actress portray-

ing her. She gets as far in her life as she does because of who she is, and knowing how to use her “talents”. She is very smart.

Andrews-Katz: Does Sally survive World War II? What happens to her?

Larkin: I think she survives especially since she is not of Jewish descent. I think for her, she continues doing what she is doing.

That is her life. She continues as a performer and works where she can in the clubs she can, and leads a life similar to many of the women I have worked with in the past. She’s performing and trying to become recognized, for Sally that is really important and not something she is going to give up on.

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role – regardless of limitations – what would it be and why?

Larkin: That is such a good one. You know I would probably have to say something by Adam Guettel. I love his work and think he is incredible. I would probably say Clara from Light in the Piazza. That would be something different from what I’ve done. “Myths and Hymns” is good as well; he has so many hits. But one of my dreams is to play Flaemmchen from Grand Hotel.

I think she is similar to Sally in a way, on the edge and showing their vulnerability.

I would like to do that also. But out of all the things, I would want to perform in a “straight” play. A non-musical role is something different and offers different experiences. I would love to do a Sam Shepherd piece. I love his work.

Cabaret is the hit musical based on the short stories of Christopher Isherwood. Jill Harris, Judy Dench, Natasha Richardson, and Emma Stone have played the role of Sally Bowles on Broadway and in London.

Liza Minnelli immortalized the role in the film version.

Lydia encapsulates the border between reality and poetry

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer LYDIA STRAWBERRY THEATRE WORKSHOP (AT 12TH AVENUE ARTS) Through June 24 Strawberry Theatre Workshop has chosen a more-than-worthy play to present: Lydia by Octavio Solis. It’s hard to write about because there is just so much that should not be said before anyone sees the play! Even the barest minimums reveal aspects that would be better discovered by an audience that has no idea what they’re going to see.

Having said that, while it’s an intense, challenging and sometimes difficult journey, it’s a stellar effort and is definitely one of the most important plays you will see this year! If you like a play that sticks to you for weeks like glue, you will love seeing this one! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it on stage.

The press release blurb says: “Lydia centers on two young women who move across borders – one between nations, and one across metaphysical borders between unknown, unseen worlds. Although technically hired as a maid, Lydia’s primary responsibility is caring for the family’s near-vegetative teenage daughter named Ceci, who was left in a coma after a mysterious accident

There have been many iterations internationally, nationally, and locally in Seattle.

It’s nice to see it temporarily nesting in West Seattle’s neighborhood.

This tasty rendition transforms what we know of this musical and makes its mark as a uniquely Seattle production that is inspiring from its soaring operatic score, affirming with its outstanding casting choices, and most of all entertaining, well because, it’s freaking SONDHEIM! His works like West Side Story, Gypsy, A Little Night Music, and Sunday in the Park with George are musical pantheons.

Another aspect to get used to, for nonLatinos likely, is the blend of Spanish, English, and Spanglish in the play. Not being a Spanish-speaker, myself, but having a bit of a grasp of other language and context, it seems to me that the Spanish used does not always “need” translation, and that almost everything ends up pretty much understood. But, indeed, unless you know the language, it’s another way that Solis makes the audience sit up and work.

That is about all anyone should say about the plot or the production. I applaud Sheila Daniels for taking on the direction of this play – it would scare the pants off me to try to direct. Greg Carter does the usual great job on just enough set to work effectively. Rob Witmer’s sound design is very subtle. Caitlin Krida Cooke’s costumes are mostly understated and completely appropriate, but the quinceanera dress is gorgeous – though it looks so fragile that it doesn’t seem like it will make it through one weekend, much less a full run!

The cast is strong and strongly committed. They don’t shirk the tough stuff.

This is not family-friendly. It’s adult content and not for shrinking violets. This doesn’t mean you should skip it. You should pull yourself together and go see it.

that occurred right before her quinceanera, or 15th birthday. Unlike the family that surrounds her, Lydia is able to translate Ceci’s thoughts – an adolescent stew of childhood memories, criticism and carnality.”

Expanding that description, Lydia is a young woman of indeterminate age, clearly undocumented, who has just been hired as a maid/nanny for the American Flores household. The household contains a mother (Carolyn Marie Monroe), a father (Ray Gonzalez), an older son (Rafael Molina), a younger son (Andrew Pryor-Ramirez) and a daughter, Ceci – short for Cecilia (Sofia Raquel Sanchez). In a small but key role, Pablo Lopez plays Cousin Alvaro.

Before Lydia (Yadira Duarte) arrives, the early scenes set the table for the tones and styles of the piece. While Ms. Sanchez is called upon to twist her body into that of a cerebral palsy-style victim, we see her first speak in deeply poetic tones with special lighting to help us understand that we are now “in her thoughts” and not in real time. Kudos to Reed Nakayama for an intricate and beautifully rendered lighting scheme, helping us to differentiate between the internal-state and “reality.”

That singular need, for the actor to change instantly from quadriplegic to fully functioning teenager, is already a tremendous accomplishment for young Ms. Sanchez. She makes those transitions completely seamlessly with no hesitation between any of them.

So, one aspect to get used to is that particular transition. However, the script makes the leap to magic realism when Lydia shows up and seems to understand Ceci’s thoughts and needs. There are also moments when Ceci talks about what she thinks she sees and it’s hard to determine if she’s actually seeing reality, only translating it into dreams. Solis does not pull his punches in the writing to make it easy on an audience. He expects us to hang in there and struggle to understand.

The collaboration that they bring to the stage here is the best of both worlds: Wright’s deeply personal and poignant moments and Ankrim’s outgoing and spectacular moments come together as beautifully as Sondheim’s lyrics and music do. It’s seemingly simple; but once on stage, it is spectacular!

Artistic talent will fight tooth and nail to get opportunities as bloody good as this production. It’s obvious the acting talent here have cut their teeth deep into the bones of music and drama. As Sweeney Todd, devilishly handsome Ben Gonio hits it with “No Place like London” and ratchets up the tension armed with his precious sterling silver straight razor throughout the play.

This is Gonio’s breakout moment. You are with him with his vengeful aches until his heartbreaking fate. Corinna Lapid Munter is absolutely transcendent in her role as dowdy Mrs. Lovett. As soon as she breaks

into “Worst Pies in London” the audience is completely hooked on this poor woman whose greatest weapon is a meat grinder for her meat pies. Her voice is amazing as it not only hits the notes, but does it with the wryly dark humor of the lyrics. Sondheim’s unique alliteration and wordplay is on full display with this number.

Not to be outshone, the supporting players prove their worth with their respective expertise. Jeff Church (as the awful Judge Turpin), John Han (as the green Tobias Ragg), Jon Lee-Vroman (as the vulgar Beadle Bamford), Jimmie Herrod (as the unfortunate Beggar Woman), Nick Watson (as the slimy Adolfo Pirelli) and Leslie Wisdom (as the buffoon Jonas Fogg) are great muses in this musical ensemble with numbers like the “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” reprises.

As Anthony Hope (Todd’s estranged daughter’s suitor), Jordan Iosua Taylor is stunning, especially vocally. Taylor’s rendition of “Ah, Miss” is alluring. His youth and

all-out great looks bring to life his character’s charm and naiveté. Todd’s daughter, Johanna Barker, is played by an exquisite Emilie Hanson. Her effervescent sweetness tinged with sadness during “Green Finch and Linnet Bird” is a perfect example of how each character offers the deep and psychological nuances to this beloved masterpiece story. Hugh Wheeler, who wrote the book, is a drama marvel whose writing is classic in its essence and masterfully entertaining in its delivery.

Sweeney Todd is a grim tale of revenge that slices through the core of common goodness. Whether it’s a slice through meat pie or a slice across the neck, it’s that eternal hunger being satiated. Thankfully, we have great art like ArtsWest’s latest superb production to gratify that need.

We’re bringing up four shows a year and so I’ve been able to resurrect some shows from the past that were really fun and should be seen by more people. Because it’s going to be the Seattle/Portland premiere I wanted to make it even more special and asked BenDeLaCreme if she’d join the cast as

in oblique descriptions so we don’t give away too many plot twists – and saying that gives you too much information about plot twists!

O’Hara is deft with dialogue. He catches how people tease and express emotions with toss away lines. He plunges the audience into the middle of scenes and lets us catch up with what is going on. He also has a strong point of view. His plays – so far, Intiman and Oyetimein have done two, including Bootycandy in 2015 – are part uproariously funny and part disturbing, and always challenging the status quo.

Barbecue examines two identical-seeming families. They both come to the same park, somewhere in “middle America,” we’re told by the press blurb, and they all coincidentally share the same names. Lillie Anne (Cynthia Lauren Tewes and Shaunyce Omar) has called all the sisters and irritated brother James T (Lamar Legend and Charles Leggett) together. Adlean (Macall Gordon and Rachel Pate) and Marie (Angel Brice and Carol Roscoe) are as reluctant as can be. But they all really do want their sister Barbara (Kamaria Harris and Eryn Joslyn), who they also call Zippety Boom as a

Roz Queef and she said “yes.” I’m thrilled!

MK: Heklina! Welcome back to Seattle! So excited to see you working with Peaches. What do you like about working together?

Heklina: Well, I’ve been working with her so long now, I’m not sure I “like” it, I’m just used to it! No, seriously Peaches is such a Pro, and we share so many of the same influences and sensibilities. We’ve literally grown old together.

MK: Peaches, what do you like about working with Heklina?

Peaches Christ: Looking pretty. Seriously, stand next to her and suddenly you’re gorgeous. Also, we’ve been friends for over twenty years now and have worked together as colleagues and sisters. She’s definitely one of the funniest, smartest people I know and I love our collaborations. We just did a run of our “Mommie Queerest” show in SF and I’m thinking that might be another one we should bring up North.

MK: Also, our hometown girl, Delacreme, is playing Roz. What do you like working with her?

Peaches Christ: Besides the fact that she’s gorgeous and amazing? I love that she so uniquely utilizes her immense talents creating high quality drag shows that are really smart, challenging, and wildly entertaining. She’s also done my “Death Drop Gorgeous” and “Hocus Pocus” shows and is a total dream to work with. She’s super generous. She’s even writing a brand new song parody for the upcoming “9 to 5 Inches” that will make its debut in our show.

Heklina: I remember working with her at Trannyshack Seattle at Chop Suey. I

could tell there was something promising there, the first time I saw her perform. We recently had her shows (“Cosmos”, “Inferno-a-Go-Go”) at Oasis and they were just so smart and great.

MK: Plus Pandora, too?

Peaches Christ: Pandora is a total nerd like me, which I truly LOVE! We are both total fan-girls and movie geeks and she’s a brilliant drag mimic and impersonator when it comes to re-creating performances of icons we love. It’s no small feat taking on the role that Dolly Parton made so famous and, trust me, audiences are going to really enjoy what she does.

Heklina: The “9 to 5 Inches” show in San Francisco a few years back was the first time I ever worked with her, I’m excited to tread the boards with her on the tour.

MK: Peaches, what show are you bringing to Seattle next?

Peaches Christ: Well, I’m heading to Provincetown after this for the entire summer and don’t get back until September when we’ll bring our next show up to Seattle late that month. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say yet, but... I’ll be traveling by broomstick and when I arrive I plan on running amok, amok, amok.

MK: Heklina, when we last spoke in 2014, you were retiring TrannyShack for Oasis, do you have any regrets?

Heklina: No Regrets, Really. But I just knew Oasis was going to a shit-storm of work; and it has been, but really rewarding also.

MK: What is next for you?

Heklina: Just to keep on with the programming at Oasis and gearing up for Pride.

The pretend intervention they’re staging is at any moment going to collapse under their antics. You just know you’re watching a family train wreck!

This is a terrifically engaging concept and it works really well. They’re funny, profane, and hypocritical, all at once. They’re all over-the-top and skirt stereotypes really hard. And that’s part of the point.

The casting works well. It’s great to see Ms. Tewes back on the stage and her character is the most grounded of her “family,” along with Ms. Pate for her “family.”

The outdoor set is beautifully designed

by Julia Hayes Welch with patchy grass, rundown picnic tables and a credibly corroded swing set. Costume designer Kelly McDonald seems to be having fun with her vibrant choices of costuming. Sound is pretty critical in this show, so Matt Starritt’s choices of songs help set tone and time.

Since you have to see it to know what it all stacks up to, it’s really hard to go any further. The cast seems to be having fun cussing and kicking. Points are made without bopping the audience on the head. Laughter is often a way to talk about tough topics without making them seem like a big deal.

Aside from the cursing, this might be one you can bring your teens to. It might be a good conversation opener afterward.

Indeed, you and whomever you attend with may have a great time dissecting it all, too.

METHOD presents White Room

by Damien Davis – June 16 to August 5 Damien Davis is a Brooklyn-based artist. His practice explores historical representations of blackness by seeking to unpack the visual language of various cultures and question how these societies code/decode representations of race through design and digital modes of production.

In White Room, Davis will create a sitespecific installation that questions the notion of the gallery as a neutral space. Davis will create a custom, all white “jigsaw puzzle” made out of painted CNC routed plywood. Enmeshed within this puzzle will be an assortment of patterns and motifs typical of Davis’ visual vocabulary. In doing so he opens the conversation about literal and metaphorical representations of “whiteness” and posits that there is no neutrality when looking at art.

The Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) and METHOD Gallery are pleased to welcome Damien Davis and Seattle-based artist C. Davida Ingram in a compelling discussion around sharing common ground as artists. Join us for this rich conversation on Saturday, June 17, 11am-1pm, at the Northwest African American Museum (2300 S Massachusetts St).

With overlapping interests on the ways in which blackness in all its multifaceted ways show up in contemporary art, Damien Davis and C. Davida Ingram will discuss the commonalities that emerge in their art practices: storytelling, identity and the collaborative process. Kaskade throws impressive high-energy party at the Paramount

Tuesday night, the first of two Seattle concerts on his brief “Spring Fling” tour. His back-to-back performances follow another EDM giant, Deadmau5, who also appeared in the Emerald City for two consecutive nights about a month ago. Comparably, whereas Deadmau5’s show was big and flashy with a not-so-impressive set list, Kaskade’s concert was simple, scaled down with a much better playlist.

Wearing a basic pair of oversized den-

ims and long-sleeve navy tee-shirt, the handsome 46 year-old DJ and producer opened his set with “Disarm You,” from 2016’s Automatic album. Deadmau5 opted for a huge cube-shaped platform with an elevated podium to play his songs, but Kaskade just stood at the edge of the stage within arm’s reach of fans who stood at the front on the main floor. Not every Kaskade show is the same and for the Seattle concert he mixed in Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” as an obvious ode to the late Chris Cornell.

The Utah native remixed The Weeknd’s “Starboy” that sounded incredible, while a large flatscreen behind him displaying images of Earth illuminated at night, and also sneaked in a snippet of his remix of Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful.” A highlight was “I Remember,” a song that appears on Deadmau5’s Random Album Title record from 2008, a collaboration between the two of them. It found the entire main floor, and even some concertgoers up in the mezzanine, bouncing up and down excitedly.

“So, it’s good to be back!” said Kaskade (real name: Ryan Raddon) to the packed theater with a smile. Not certain, but I think the last time he was in town must have been two years ago for “Fright Night” around Halloween.

During “We Don’t Stop,” the lyrics were posted in bright red letters on the screen,

so the audience could sing along – and they did. They also sang along loudly to “Us,” chanting the chorus, “And they don’t need to know about you, ‘bout me, ‘bout us / ‘Bout you, ‘bout me, ‘bout us.” Fans, of course, did a lot of dancing, too. While mostly everybody wore tee-shirts and tank tops because of the warm weather, this was an EDM show and that brought out an array of outfits, from sexy leotards and globracelets to bright-colored short-shorts and even a guy dressed in a unicorn costume.

One of the most energetic moments of the show was at the finale when Kaskade played “Something Something Champs,” as a series of light blue laser beams flashed out to the crowd from the stage, followed

by Kaskade standing atop his equipment desk, or a speaker, and thanked everybody for coming to the show as he danced a little.

He then asked all of us to crowd in towards the front to snap a selfie. The final 10 minutes of the performance saw two rounds of white confetti and streamers being blown out to the audience, plus a series of smoke bombs going off at the foot of the stage. As if it wasn’t already a great concert, that just added more to the excitement.

The second of both Seattle shows, on June 7, included an after party. From the Emerald City “Spring Fling” moves onto its sixth and final destination, Chicago.

It Comes At Night an emotionally distressing apocalyptic eulogy

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer IT COMES AT NIGHT Now playing In a dense, secluded section of the forest, Paul (Joel Edgerton) does what he feels he must to ensure the survival of his wife Sarah (Carmen Ejogo) and their 17-yearold son Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). The family has boarded up their massive home from top to bottom, sealing every door to the outside save one, and it is kept locked at all times, no exceptions. They are heavily armed and willing to shoot first and not even bother with questions, knowing that hesitation on their part could lead to a painful, gruesome death that has spread like a virus all around the globe.

A stranger, Will (Christopher Abbott), has stumbled upon this house in the center of the woods in a desperate search for water for his young wife, Kim (Riley Keough), and their young son Andrew (Griffin Robert Faulkner). After waiting a full 24-hours to ensure he is not infected by the mysterious disease that has ravaged the planet, Paul makes a pact with the stranger. He’ll not only deliver water to Will’s family, but he’ll also offer them safety inside his family’s house. In exchange, they will bring their small cadre of farm animals back with them, everyone pooling their resources in a show of trust. Most importantly, though, they will all follow Paul’s rules, no matter how extreme, and while it makes sense to try and survive as a group, that doesn’t mean each family should not protect themselves from the other in case any of them suddenly gets infected by this apocalyptic plague.

A follow-up to his sensational 2015 debut Krisha, writer/director Trey Edward Shults’ It Comes At Night is not the stripped-

down, apocalyptic horror film most will think it is. It is an aggressively downbeat descent into paranoia and uncertainty, the actual motion picture a hard-edged drama revolving around the ways people relate to one another in the most deathly extreme of situations. The film asks questions relating to the death of humanity itself, how the moral code survivors are forced to live by slowly but surely eats away at their souls, in the end leaving them hollowed out shells of whoever it was they used to be before events spiraled into chaos and calamity.

Methodical, moving at its own unhurried pace, content to revel in silence and the mundane minutiae of surviving in a world no longer filled with modern amenities, Shults shows the same attention to detail he made a point of emphasizing in his first film. Scenes of Travis learning how to chop wood under Will’s tutelage while Paul stands guard initially appear extraneous until the moment it suddenly becomes an essential turning point that affects how one family relates to the other, each piece of this puzzle fitting alongside its counterpart perfectly.

While what has happened to the world remains an unanswered question, the facts of the situation the characters find themselves in are immediately recognizable, the inherent dramatics coming to breathless boil in the film’s first few minutes. More impressively, Shults manages to keep things sitting on the burner simmering away for all of the 97-minutes the director’s sophomore effort runs, the sense that doom is right around the corner and that death could come calling at any second palpable throughout.

Yet, I’m not at all certain I would classify It Comes At Night as a horror film. It’s more akin to something Ingmar Bergman might have composed had he made a drama about the end of the world, the dinner table conversations and the late-night imagin-

ings of what one would gorge on if food wasn’t scarce having a personal bent that’s fascinating. Seen almost entirely through Travis’ eyes, there is a delicate grace that only augments the tragedy those inside the house are struggling to overcome, this inquisitive and intelligent teenager still figuring out who he wants to be, forced to suddenly do it in a world that could come to an apocalyptic end at any given second.

Eerily shot by cinematographer Drew Daniels, intricately edited by Shults and Matthew Hannam (Swiss Army Man), an all-encompassing sense of doom and gloom permeates things down to the marrow, the cold-blooded nature of it all forcing the viewer to keep watching no matter how much they might find themselves wanting to look elsewhere. The powerhouse ensemble is more than up to the task, Edgerton, Ejogo and Keough all having moments of pure, unadulterated terrifying paranoia

where their emotions leap off the screen as if we’re watching a documentary and not a fictional piece of genre entertainment. As for young Harrison, his performance is an absolute knockout, his final scenes leaving me in a state of breathless despair that’s downright shattering.

Make no mistake; Shults’ film is not an upper. The director takes things to their logically extreme conclusion, refusing to look away when events disintegrate into outright carnage. The final scene is haunting in its brutal, distinctively simple authority, and as impressive as the filmmaking might be there’s no denying that It Comes At Night is anchored in a nihilistic fatalism that’s painfully catastrophic. It’s a downbeat eulogy to a story that’s been heading in that direction right from its opening image, those anticipating something different likely to walk away afterward scratching their head wondering what it was they just experienced.
