Celebrating 41 Years!

Manchester benefit concert to feature Grande, Cyrus, Bieber, Perry and Coldplay

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer A week after a bomb killed 22 people at Manchester Arena, following an Ariana Grande show, an A-list roster of musicians are joining forces to perform a benefit concert in the English city, including Grande herself. The show is being staged at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, which seats approximately 50,000. Also on the lineup are Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Pharrell Williams, Usher and Niall Horan of One Direction. All proceeds from the special event will go to The British Red Cross Society, which launched the Manchester Emergency Fund to help the victims’ families. Fans who attended the May 22 concert at the arena are able to register for free tickets, while those wishing to purchase tickets can visit ticketmaster. co.uk. Being billed as “One Love Manchester,” the event will take place Sunday, June 4. All remaining dates on Grande’s “Dangerous Woman Tour” have been suspended indefinitely.

Mighty Oaks on September 17 (Neumos), Ms. Lauryn Hill and Nas on October 10 (WaMu Theater), Marc Cohn with the Blind Boys of Alabama on January 27 (Pantages Theater, Tacoma) and Michael Feinstein on February 23 (Pantages Theater, Tacoma).

If you’re a fan of Olivia Newton John, send her your prayers. The legendary singer-songwriter revealed this week that her cancer has returned and spread, forcing the postponement of several dates on her current tour to undergo radiation therapy and natural wellness treatments. All June shows in the US and Canada have been canceled for now.

Finally, the rock legends keep leaving us. Greg Allman, Southern rock pioneer and founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, died on May 27 from liver cancer.

The group had several hits during the ’70s, including “Ramblin’ Man,” “Crazy,” “Angeline” and “Midnight Rider,” which was featured in the Melissa McCarthy movie Tammy. Fellow musicians, from John Mayer to Ringo Starr to Chris Stapleton, paid their respects via social media, while other artists like Eric Church and Lady Antebellum honored him with musical tributes.

Allman was the father of Elijah Blue, a son he shared with ex-wife Cher, who also mourned his death by saying “words are impossible.”

At last, Beck is coming to Seattle! He’s actually coming to Redmond, but close enough. The multiple Grammy winner and a personal favorite, the acclaimed folk-rock artist hasn’t played the Puget Sound for at least 3 or 4 years. It’s been while, let’s put it that way. He hasn’t released anything new since 2014’s Album of the Year-winning Morning Phase, unless you count being a guest vocalist on two singles last year, M83’s “Junk” and Flume’s “Skin,” however, he’ll likely still sell out Marymoor Park when he appears at the outdoor summer venue on August 25. This year the festival runs for 17 days from June 9-25; the popular Art on the Fly kicks things off one-week prior on Saturday June 3. SIDF’s astonishing array of 50+ performances dazzles with more than 100 artists from China, Portugal, Switzerland, Russia, India, the West Coast and Seattle. The popular Spotlight on Seattle Series returns with Spotlight: Artist’s Perspective, Spotlight on Seattle Now and a two-night program for Spotlight on Contemporary Ballet. Curators for the Spotlight events include: Donald Byrd, Cyrus Khambatta, Marlo Ariz, Eva Stone, Deb Wolf, Constanze Villines and Erin Boyt. The festival’s popular Sanity Cafe returns for a 4th year on June 12.

SIDF has added a special interactive twopart performance event titled [FRAGILE] on June 19 and 21. The Threshold Institute, a workshop for aspiring dancers, runs from June 19-24 and registered dancers study with guest teachers from the festival’s roster.

Tickets to paid performances are $23 in advance, $27 at the door (students are $18 in advance, $22 at the door). A 2-show pass is $38, the All Festival Pass (12 unique shows, 16 in all) is $75 and the Premium Pass ($125, includes priority seating, complimentary beverages and entrance to the closing night VIP party.)

The company posted this message on Twitter, “For once words fail us @martynhett taken from us rip beloved friend.” In a statement released to the press, Rumpus also noted ““He taught us so much about seizing opportunities and rejoicing in everything life could offer no matter how small: a birthday, a great moment at work, a celebrity follower, he made them special, now we know why.”

Hett attended the Ariana Grande concert on May 22 with friend Stuart Aspinall, but they were separated after the show, when the blast occurred. He was last spotted about 10:10 pm at the bar inside the arena.

“He went to the bar about 20 minutes before the end of the concert and got chatting to some girls,” stated Aspinall in an interview with Towleroad. “As I was leaving, the explosion happened and everyone started running.”

Hett was scheduled to be in the US this week, having saved up money for two years to spend a couple of months in America.

His planned trip included being an audience member of the Wendy Williams talk show in New York on May 29 and 30; he was a big fan of hers. Williams paid tribute

to him by keeping one seat in the studio audience empty during the taping of the dates he was set to attend.

Pop giant Mariah Carey honored Hett, who was a huge fan of hers as well, with a social media post that read “Devastated to learn that one of the victims in Manchester was part of the #Lambily. RIP Martyn Hett.

We will cherish your memory forever. His family and all the families affected are in my thoughts and prayers. MC.” She added two heart emojis at the end.

A vigil in Hett’s hometown of Stockport on May 29 drew hundreds of mourners, including family members and his partner Russell Hayward. Shortly after it was confirmed he’d died in the explosion, Hayward shared this message: “Thankfully I have his wonderful family and amazing friends to keep each other strong. I love you Martyn I always will. X.” Both Hett and Hayward were superfans of the British soap opera “Coronation Street” and the show dedicated a bench from the set of its series to him and the other 21 victims of the attack.

In preparation for the opening the Seattle Gay News caught up with Michael Thomas Grant, who is playing Sandy Frink, the role originated by Alan Cumming in the 1997 film version.

Eric Andrews-Katz: Where were you raised?

Michael Thomas Grant: I was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. I went to the Memphis College of Art until after my freshman year. Then I left and did not continue.

Andrews-Katz: Who were your earliest influences as a performer?

Grant: First and foremost it was my brothers. That’s how I was raised, listening to music in my dad’s truck. We’d all sing along with ZZ Top, George Thorogood and the Eurythmics. You didn’t want to sing off key, so I learned to sing that way.

Andrews-Katz: ZZ Top, George Thorogood and the Eurythmics? It’s like “one of these things doesn’t belong.”

it now speaks, also, to the growth of Village and its ability to field a sophisticated cast of mostly African-American talent who are mostly all located here, now, to accomplish this intense operetta (much of the dialogue in this musical is sung).

If you have never seen the 1983 stage musical or the 2006 movie, the plot takes inspiration from the real-life history of Motown founder Berry Gordy and the Supremes. A trio of naïve singers arrives in New York to make it big. A somewhatshady “operator” takes them under his wing and defies expectation by finding a way to make R&B more palatable to “white” radio stations and helps them become stars. But only after pushing the larger, better singer to a supporting role to the one he thinks is prettier and with more star quality.

The musical demonstrates a lot of the seedy history of our country where white singers like Elvis and others heard a song and appropriated it into a hit by singing it themselves. The energy of change and civil rights in the 1960s and ’70s did allow for breakout black stars to get the recognition they deserved.

Village is graced by the talents of Angela Birchett, who was just working on Broadway in The Color Purple revival.

Grant: (laughing) That’s true. I think that The Blues Brothers Soundtrack eventually replaced the Eurythmics. My brothers were kind of a second set of parents for me. When they went through their Led Zepplin/Hendrix stage, it was my first foray into those fields. The first song I even played live was “Say it Ain’t So” by Ouiser with my brother on the guitar.

Andrews-Katz: What was the show that gave you the theatre bug?

Grant: I never considered performing until I was in high school. My girlfriend at the time, showed me a bootleg copy of Spring Awakening. Later I saw A Very Potter Musical, and it was watching Darren Criss that it dawned on me that I wanted to explore more theatre. I eventually saw Spring Awakening at the Playhouse on the Square in Memphis. It was kind of serendipitous, so I decided to move to LA and pursue acting. I decide to try out for Seussical, the Musical, because nothing says “I’m serious” like Seussical, the Musical.

Andrews-Katz: You’ve appeared in film and stage. Which do you prefer and why?

Grant: I think I prefer theatre because I get to do so much more of it. The energy in the room, and connecting to people is more visceral and in the moment. You get more

big voice who is temperamentally difficult and can’t step back from the lead of the Dreams. We are used to hearing the iconic song “And I Am Telling You” which Effie sings, but often it’s out of context. Here, Birchett is tormented, desperate, clinging, and needy. She acts the hell out of the song and brings a great deal more meaning to it.

Lauren Du Pree stars as Deena with Alexandria Henderson as Lorrell, the two other Dreams. John Devereaux stars as Curtis, their manager. Each of them does a great job at these characters from their early days to their more famous and sophisticated challenges.

The show I saw had Chandler Thomas go on for Charles Simmons as C.C., Effie’s brother and the songwriter who also makes it big. Thomas did a great job, seamlessly fitting into a tough understudy situation.

The family talents of Ty Willis, who handily plays the older manager, Marty, and his two daughters, Bethanie and Shelby in the ensemble, are a particularly nice touch.

There is a “side” love affair between young Lorell and the fading R&B star and lothario Jimmy. However, Nathaniel Tenebaum apparently cannot help stealing every single scene he’s in! His amazing vocal talents are supreme and there is no denying him his due. Apparently, he has also relocated here, so we are destined (yes, yes, yes!) to see some powerful performances wherever people can fit him in!

But aside from the wonderful ensemble, I must give all kinds of kudos to the terrific

time with the people and material to create those kinds of bonds. It can mean much more than the actual product, and you get more out of it as a performer. In film, you get to have smaller moments, which are nice too, but a lot of the theatre has been in smaller venues, so you get them there as well. Also you don’t get to sing as much on film.

Andrews-Katz: Romy and Michelle isn’t the only original musical you are doing this year. Tell us a little about David Orris’ Invisible.

Grant: Invisible is basically a John Hughesque take on The Invisible Man. Griff is one of the stereotypical nerds that you would see in those kinds of films. He and his best friend make a serum to make them both physically attractive and adept, and it turns them invisible instead. It brings into question whether or not you want to be popular and what it means to be seen as a genuine human being. I think it’s really cool.

Andrews-Katz: Have you been with the musical Romy and Michele since its first workshop days?

Grant: No. I think the workshop started twelve years ago. Robin [Schiff, the musical’s script author] has been trying to get it worked on for over a decade. The main team has been together at least seven years.

Once they started to put it into workshop form, that was maybe three years ago, that’s when Stephanie [Renee Wall, playing Michele] was brought on, and two years ago is when I was brought onto the project.

Andrews-Katz: What are the problems and advantages of doing a musical that is based on such a popular film?

Grant: The cool thing about it is there are so many iconic moments within the musical. You have to work around those specific things so people can get what they love out of the piece. There is an audience expectation about what they are getting, and you have to match it to some degree. The beauty of it is after you can turn it around and those can be your strongest aspects.

The people coming to see the movie are going to love it because everything they ex-

pect is there. After that point, you have as much freedom to take them [the audience] by surprise. The musical takes every moment you love about the film, and turns it up to an eleven!

Andrews-Katz: What will be some differences between the film and the musical version of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion?

Grant: I guess because the cast has been cut down a little bit, there is no “smoking cowboy” and that’s missing. There have been relationships expanded as well.

Andrews-Katz: At what point does a show in workshop, get worked over and tweaked enough to become frozen and sent on?

Grant: Never! That’s the cool thing about Robin Schiff; if there is a better joke, she will find it and change the script. That’s the good part about having our people every step of the way is that we are still improving things. There are some things that are kind of frozen, but those are the things that already work as perfectly as we hoped.

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role – regardless of any limitations – what would it be and why?

Grant: There are a couple of different roles. I woke up this morning and in the shower I was singing “Dear Evan Hanson.” I would love to play him because of the characterization. But then your brain starts to go further and further back to other shows. I don’t know. I may stop there because I love that character so much. It’s kind of perfect. Another part of me says it would be super fun to be in Caroline, or Change. If someone ever gave me the opportunity to sing “Lot’s Wife” every night, that would be great!

He has appeared on Showtime’s “Roadies” and ABC’s “The Fosters” as well as being an accomplished cabaret performer.

team surrounding director Tomkins. From the period-appropriate choreography of Daniel Cruz, to the lush 16-piece orchestral sound headed by music director R.J. Tancioco, the concert-style lighting from Tom Sturge, and the flexible set by David Sumner, every aspect was on point.

Then there are the sumptuous and beautiful costumes from Karen Ann Ledger! They are bedazzled and be-trained (is that a thing?) and faux-furred, with eye-popping colors.

And they go along beautifully with the bighaired wigs, courtesy Douglas Decker.

Aside from a few swear words, this musical is totally family-friendly and is so

alive and fun that it’s sure to be a hit with the entire family. Take Grandma and your ten year-old. Bring the aunts and uncles and cousins. Everyone will want to dance and shout along with this show!

Mind-bending Butterfly an intriguing thriller

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BLACK BUTTERFLY Now playing How much one enjoys director Brian Goodman’s (What Doesn’t Kill You) mindbending thriller Black Butterfly, a remake of the 2008 twisted French suspense flick Papillon Noir, depends entirely on whether or not the film’s climactic reveal drives them up the wall in incredulous disbelief.

It’s a twist loaded upon a twist, and while not altogether unexpected, it does pull the rug out from underneath everything that happened during the first two-thirds in a fundamental way. I’m not altogether certain that it works, the way it forces the viewer to question the ins and outs of the central mystery producing even more questions than it does answers.

Writer Paul Lopez (Antonio Banderas) has journeyed to his mountainside cabin in order to craft the screenplay that will hopefully resurrect his career and solve all of his financial woes. While his small Colorado community has been rocked by a series of mysterious murders that have the local police flummoxed, the one-time literary wunderkind originally from Madrid isn’t worried. After all, who’d want to do anything to him? He’s broke, down on his luck and mired in a debilitating drunken depression that sets him at arm’s length from friend and stranger alike, even his eager and supportive real estate agent Laura (Piper Perabo) no longer sure what’s the best way to interact with him.

Enter Jack (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a friendly drifter who lends assistance after Paul inadvertently angers a trucker during a confrontation at a roadside diner. In gratitude, the writer takes this stranger back to his secluded abode to clean up and to get a bite to eat, the pair striking up a grizzled, unforced camaraderie that catches the lonely men by surprise. Jack soon makes himself an essential part of Paul’s life, insinuating himself into the very fiber of it to an almost dangerous degree. As friendly as all this is, it really starts to feel like something sinister might be going on, the line separating them as individuals gradually disappearing the longer they remain under one roof.

Even for those unfamiliar with Papillon Noir, it will shock no one that nothing here is as it appears. Paul’s sanity sits upon a razor’s edge. Jack’s awe-shucks demeanor is nothing more than a façade concealing a disturbing level of menace and aggression. Laura’s kindness could very well lead to her undoing. Into it all, that little story about a killer stalking this Colorado community will also rear its terrifying head, the resolution to that particular mystery likely to land on Paul’s doorstep whether he wants it to or not.

Those are the basics, and for the most part they follow a typical pattern. But Marc Frydman and Justin Stanley’s script is frequently quite clever, especially in regards to how it goes about fleshing out both of its two main male protagonists. It oftentimes plays like an intriguing, continually unsettling variation on Ira Levin’s classic play Deathtrap or Stephen King’s iconic novel Misery, the screenwriters more interested in discovering who Paul and Jack are than dishing out a nonsensical series of thrills

and chills just for the heck of it.

Even better is Goodman’s confident direction. He manages to manufacture a sense of mystery that oozes tension, while at the same time guiding Banderas, Meyers and Perabo to deliver complex, multifaceted performances that are continually intriguing. The filmmaker keeps things emotionally balanced throughout no matter how strange or structurally obtuse events might become, Goodman utilizing his outdoor locales, as well as production designer Michael Fissneider’s suitably cluttered interiors, with a dynamic precision that’s impressive. I was also taken with José David Montero’s (Open Grave) intensely refined cinematography, his images having a kinetic energy I was thoroughly mesmerized by.

I still haven’t decided how big a problem the last third is. During these climactic sections, Frydman and Stanley’s screenplay loses some of its momentum, the narrative becoming so obsessed with its own hidden surprises it forgets to keep the action grounded in the various characters and the

life and death decisions they’re all forced to make. It’s also here where Goodman relaxes his grip on things, delivering the final shocks with a level of gracelessness that felt moderately bludgeoning. While I didn’t feel these reveals came entirely out of a nonsensical world disconnected from all of the dramatics that came before them, that still didn’t make what transpired satisfying, the climax a curious turn of events that left me slightly frustrated.

I still think the positives as they pertain to Goodman’s sophomore opus far outweigh its negatives. While I wish the filmmakers had found a way to keep things more grounded, while I can’t help but feel they get too obsessed with trying to outdo the French original, the strong performances of the central trio and the emphasis on crafting strong, three-dimensional characters are positives I refuse to overlook. Goodman continues to impress from a directorial standpoint, Black Butterfly a strong, if still somewhat vexing, thriller I’m glad I took the time to watch.

For almost a decade, Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) has been searching for the

lost Trident of Poseidon, a fabled mystical artifact that supposedly has the power to end every curse bestowed upon those sailing upon the sea. For as long as she can remember, astronomer Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) has been looking for the same item, certain that if she can find this mythical treasure she’ll learn the identity of the father who gave her up for adoption two decades prior. While they’ve traveled in similar shipping lanes as they circumnavigate the globe, these two strangers discover they’re on the exact same mission when they both try to track down the one man who could assist them in their pursuit, the long forgotten former scoundrel of the High Seas, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

They are not the only ones after the drunken pirate. Long trapped within the confines of the Devil’s Triangle, the murderous Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his crew, now ghosts who revenge themselves on all sailors unlucky enough to enter their domain, have suddenly been

granted their freedom. The single-minded undead Spaniard immediately sets out to find Sparrow, the man who tricked him and his crew to their doom so long ago, and with the aid of a terrified Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) he will find him in no time. But when Salazar learns Turner and Smyth, aided by the man who killed him, no less, are all searching for the Trident, suddenly the race is on to find the item’s resting place, all three Captains eager to bend its powers to their respective will.

The fifth chapter in Disney’s amazingly lucrative swashbuckler franchise initially based on the famous theme park ride, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the supposed last voyage of Captain Jack Sparrow and his infamous ship the Black Pearl. With the arrival of Henry Turner, the film attempts to bring things full circle, his pursuit of the Trident directly related to the curse his father, Jack’s former ally and friend Captain William Turner (Orlando Bloom), has been suffering under since the climax of 2007’s Pirates of

the Caribbean: At World’s End. Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson (The Terminal), who conceived the story with franchise veteran Terry Rosio, goes out of his way to try and tie up every loose end left unresolved by the previous films especially as they pertain to Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa, their relationship the core element everything ends up revolving around.

As fine and dandy as all that is, it’s still difficult to get excited about a single thing happening in this sequel. While Oscarnominated Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg do a more than adequate job behind the camera as far as their big budget Hollywood debut is concerned, not even they can do enough to conceal just how half-baked and underdeveloped this feature proves to be. While something of a minor step up from 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the movie still has trouble manufacturing a reason for the audience to care whether any of the core cast of characters come through this adventure alive. Worse,

it does a monumentally poor job of bringing William Turner back into the fold, the resolution to his story landing with a gigantic, disappointing thud.

Bardem is terrific, however, and while Salazar is never the villain he maybe could have been (I swear he spends half his scenes delivering large swaths of exposition explaining why he hates Jack Sparrow so very, very much), the talented actor still appears to be having a grand time unleashing this larger than life performance. As for the returning cast, Rush fares best, and not only is Barbossa’s story arc the most compelling one, the actor also manages to invest a solid chunk of emotion into his scenes, making the learning of what’s continually driving him onward worthy of discovery.

Thing is, while Rønning and Sandberg hardly appear to be overwhelmed by the sequel’s massive set pieces and state-of-theart visual effects, they just as clearly have trouble generating a sense of fun or adventure, and other than an early sequence involving a bank heist gone massively wrong

and a suspenseful zombie shark attack involving Jack and Henry, there’s little on the action front to get excited about. Not that this is entirely their fault. Nathanson’s script is so underdeveloped, so pointlessly convoluted, I’m not sure consistent thrills and chills were even possible. It’s a lot of sound and fury that continually adds up to nothing, and not even a surprise finale showcasing a fairy tale love affair renewed in proper happily-ever-after fashion was enough to raise my pulse above a lukewarm simmer.

I won’t hold it against anyone who is entertained by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. It’s a handsomely mounted production, and there is some moderate charm is in seeing familiar characters return for one last swig of rum. But even with a notso-subtle passing of the torch hinting at potential future sequels or spinoffs, here’s hoping this really is the last cruise of the Black Pearl, those pirates at Disney getting away with stealing way too many box office dollars by delivering one underwhelming voyage after another for far too long.

Well-cast Baywatch drowns in mediocrity

timate failure feel like a botched attempt at C.P.R. Coming from a plethora of writers, including screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the two minds behind Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th, this film has no idea what it is, the tone it would like to strike or who it has even been made for. It offers up one of the worst screen comedy villains in the form of land usurper and malevolent developer Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra) in recent memory, while the partnership between Baywatch veteran Lt. Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) and self-centered rookie (and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist) Matt Brody (Efron) begins promisingly enough only to go nowhere worthwhile.

The story revolves around Buchannon’s belief that someone is out to destroy the Bay by turning it into an exclusive, upscale locale only the super rich can afford to visit, and they’re doing it by decreasing land values via the import of a lethal narcotic as well as by paying off the entire city council to go along with their nefarious plans.

While his team of driven lifeguards, stoic second-in-command Stephanie Holden (Hadera), bubbly do-gooder CJ Parker (Rohrbach) and trainees Summer Quinn (Daddario) and Ronnie Greenbaum (Bass), are all ready to assist in whatever plan their leader might use to uncover the truth, newcomer Brody thinks this is a job for the

police and not a cadre of exceedingly fit swimmers in tiny red swimsuits.

Chopra, apparently a sensation on the television series “Quantico,” is moderately terrible as the villainous Leeds. Other than a clever early scene where her character encounters Buchannon on the beach, getting out of her car to stand on a little pink stepping stool so she doesn’t get her designer heels dirty, she just doesn’t manage to generate any charisma. It’s almost as if she decided to show up, pick up her paycheck and then head back home, and while everyone else in the cast seems to be having a grand time going a little crazy, Chopra looks as if she’d rather be doing anything else other than acting inside this movie.

Not that I’m sure any of that is wholly her fault. Gordon’s direction is haphazard to say the least, going for broad comedy one moment, straightforward action-comedy at another, vulgar comedy a few beats after that and total The Naked Gun style joke-asecond parody comedy right after that. He plays up the buddy cop dynamics between Buchannon and Brody only to drop those concepts and tendencies in short order, while the influx of sexual comedy into the proceedings is tiredly rote to the point it’s more embarrassing than it is amusing.

Still, Johnson and Efron give it their all, while Daddario proves to be far more adept at this sort of thing than appearances in San Andreas, Texas Chainsaw and Burying the Ex had led me to believe. I also really did dig that opening section, while a running gag involving Buchannon’s refusal to call Brody by his name and instead choosing to refer to him via a variety of Boy Band monikers (like NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys) is continually amusing. There’s also some decent stuff that happens between Rohrbach and Bass, especially early on, the payoff to their continuous byplay a bit more innocent and sweet than I was anticipating.

Not that it matters. Nothing holds together, the shifts in tone so wildly slapdash it’s as if the entire production team, Gordon included, were making it all up via improvisation from the instant the shoot began.

The movie even wastes its cameo appearances by the show’s signature stars, Hasselhoff and Anderson, the jokes involving them so benign it’s a wonder why either of them decided it would be anything close to fun to be even a small part of this imbecilic mayhem. Baywatch treads water for twothirds of its unwieldy 116 minutes, maybe even more than that, the comedy drowning in its own mediocrity and as such is undeserving of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BAYWATCH Now playing I never watched “Baywatch,” the longrunning syndicated television show that proved to be star David Hasselhoff’s crowning achievement and made Pamela Anderson a worldwide sensation. I’m pretty certain I’ve never seen a single solitary episode, and other than those famous slow-motion shots of the cast running along sandy beaches there’s precious little I can tell you about the program, its characters or why it became such a phenomenon.

Even so, I was willing to give director Seth Gordon’s (Horrible Bosses) movie version of Baywatch the benefit of the doubt. The reasons? For one thing, there’s the little matter of a comedic sensation from 2012 entitled 21 Jump Street, a feat of hilarity, imagination, intelligence and flat-out fun that took just about everyone, everywhere by surprise. Additionally, I honestly just liked the idea of superstars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron teaming up inside a movie like this. Both have shown a knack for this sort of funny business under the right circumstances, and if the tone was right, the direction consistent and the script in decent enough shape, it was easy to think

this could potentially be something worthy of a look just for them alone.

And, for almost the entire length of the opening act, that’s exactly what this new interpretation of Baywatch proves to be. It introduces a fun collection of characters portrayed by the likes of Johnson, Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jon Bass and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the byplay between them all sharp and winning, and the mixture of vulgarity to sincerity to absurdism is reasonably well balanced. I sincerely liked what this movie was up to and was genuinely interested to discover what would happen next, the potential of this opening section enough to raise my excitement level considerably.

I wish that wouldn’t have been the case, because once the actual plot kicks in, once the pieces are put in place for the madness and mayhem to begin, Gordon’s latest proves to be a massive waste of time. Had it just been terrible from the jump, had I not liked it from the very first frame, I seriously doubt I’d be annoyed as I am. After all, a harmless bad movie is still nothing more than a harmless bad movie, thus forgetting about it afterwards is a remarkably easy thing to do.

But a relatively harmless bad movie that has the temerity to pretend to be a good one? Well, that sting lingers, and Baywatch has just enough going for it to make its ul-

Heartfelt Wonder Woman a selflessly entertaining superheroic spectacle

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer WONDER WOMAN Now playing It’s difficult to watch Wonder Woman outside of the bubble of current events.

Based on creator William Moulton Marston’s iconic comic book character, this is the first big budget Hollywood superhero film featuring a female heroine. More, it is directed by Patty Jenkins, the acclaimed indie auteur behind 2003’s Academy Awardwinning Monster, the first woman to helm a motion picture of this scope and size since Kathryn Bigelow brought K-19: The Widowmaker into port back in 2002. It is also the adventure that is supposed to set things right as far as Warner Bros and DC Comics’ shared cinematic universe (DCEU) is concerned, the collective stench of Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice not likely to dissipate anytime soon.

All of which puts the film in an untenable position. Wonder Woman has to be a success, almost none of the reasons why having anything to do with whether or not the feature itself is any good or not. It’s the event picture of the summer that has to prove female-led superhero epics are viable. It has to be a hit to ensure more women get the opportunity to helm similar efforts like this one instead of getting passed over for the job for whichever young, up and coming male director with less experience might be sitting in the wings ready to pounce. Stuff like this, it’s just plain silly, trying to dissociate all of that lunacy from the big budget tentpole at hand close to impossible.

I’m still going to try. Taken just as itself, trying to erase all outside influences, it’s safe to say Jenkins and her talented team have little to be worried about. Wonder Woman is grandly entertaining, offering up a hero whose heart and sincerity reveal a palpable sense of decency and self-sacrifice our modern world could use to learn a little from. It’s a big, bold and beautiful origin story, one that does Marston’s character justice and shows there just might be life in the DCEU yet, the smile plastered on my face for almost every single one of the film’s 141 minutes genuine and heartfelt, just like the determined Princess of Themyscira herself proves to be.

her mother Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), Queen of the Amazons, away from the prying eyes of the rest of humankind. On their hidden island home of Themyscira, she has been told stories of what the people on the rest of the planet are like, about how she and her people were brought to life by Zeus ages ago to help protect his creations from all threats, even the ones they have brought upon themselves. Trained to fight by her fearless aunt Antiope (Robin Wright), Diana has a gift for combat that is only exceeded by the breadth and depth of her compassion, the two delicately intertwined, making this Amazon unique even amongst her own people.

All is quiet in Themyscira until one day the outside world comes crashing to these pristine sandy shores in the form of U.S. Army spy Steve Rogers (Chris Pine). He’s gotten hold of a secret German notebook that could help put an end to WWI. But for that to happen he’s got to make it back to London alive. Even though she’s never seen a man before, even though she has no idea what’s in store for her outside of the home she’s always known, Diana is compelled to journey with Steve into the heat of battle, learning much about who she is and the extent of her miraculous abilities in the process.

And so begins Wonder Woman, Jenkins, along with screenwriter Allan Heinberg and story co-writers Zack Snyder (Sucker Punch) and Jason Fuchs (Pan), doing a splendid job building the world their heroine is making the decision to actively inhabit. Diana and Steve head to London, meet up with his secretary Etta Candy (Lucy Davis) and get support from a trusted member of the British Parliament (David Thewlis). They assemble a ragtag group of mercenaries (Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner, Eugene Brave Rock) to assist them in a perilous quest, everyone heading into the heart of darkness as they attempt to stop German General Ludendorff (Danny Huston) and his lethal assistant Dr. Maru (Elena Anaya) from unleashing a weapon of such staggering violence it could allow this Great War to continue on into the future with no foreseeable end in sight.

Much of this is an utter delight. The scenes set on Themyscira, including a sensational German assault put down by an army of determined Amazons, are magnificent, and for as brief as they sadly are the imprint they leave upon the picture cannot

be undervalued. I also quite enjoyed Diana’s first moments taking in a smog-filled London, a montage of her and Ms. Candy trying to find suitable clothes befitting a woman of the early 20th century (and not her normal warrior attire) delightfully engaging. From there, the movie gets bogged down a little in requisite bits of extraneous exposition, losing a little forward momentum up until the point Steve leads his atypical team of rogues and scoundrels into the British trenches that separates them from Germans.

It is here where Jenkins brings her movie back to life, Diana stepping out into the bloody wasteland between the trenches in order to free a small village from the bonds of tyrannical oppression. It’s a glorious moment, the one viewers have likely been waiting for, and the director stages it perfectly. Taking a page out of Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman playbook, Jenkins makes sure we understand Diana’s intentions are pure right from the start, that she’s not unsheathing her sword because she’s a great fighter looking to kill but because she expects that by doing so she can rouse others to fight for a just cause and with any luck convince her adversaries to lay down their arms. It’s spectacular stuff, all of it build-

ing to a moment of superheroic achievement that’s made possible, not because of this Amazon’s powers, but because she’s a member of a team willing to work together to achieve victory.

Gadot, the best thing about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and an important member of The Fast and Furious gang until the events of the sixth chapter in that series made that tragically unfeasible, is divine as Diana. She was born to play this character, her charming, charismatic demeanor bringing forth a humanistic disposition that makes Diana unique to, not just the DCEU, but to the world of comic book cinematic heroes as well. The level of hope she displays, the way Gadot continually puts her heart out in the open, choosing to believe the best in all she encounters even when their actions might lead another to believe otherwise, all of this comes through with an eloquent thoughtfulness that’s outstanding. I loved what the actress does, and if this performance doesn’t make her an instant star I’d be hugely surprised.

As wonderful as all of this might be, the movie does suffer from some of the same drawbacks that almost every other superhero adventure brought to the screen does since Iron Man first put on his armor way back in 2008. Like Marvel’s cinematic excursions, DC seems to be having their own problem creating memorably diabolical villains, and as good as both Huston and Anaya might be neither General Ludendorff nor Dr. Maru are particularly noteworthy.

Better handled is the depiction of the cost of a war that stretches across the face of the Earth at this time, the depiction of the impact of bullets and bombs upon a civilian population suitably devastating. As for Pine, he’s just terrific as Steve Rogers, and part of me would almost love to see an origin story spun entirely around him and his James Bond-like escapades spying on the Germans during the war’s early days.

It’s unfair all the extra elements that have been stuffed onto this film’s plate.

But even with all that extra pressure, Jenkins acquits herself admirably, and while I’d personally have liked it had she not utilized quite so much slow motion and had been given a few more dollars to sharpen up some less than stellar visual effects, this movie’s strengths far outweigh any of its more obvious weaknesses. Wonder Woman is a hero made for now, this very moment, and the fact the filmmakers don’t just seem to realize this, but embrace it as an unassailable fact to be celebrated, is worthy, in and of itself, of a standing ovation.
