She is the creation of performer Jody Kuehner who was awarded one of The Stranger’s Genius Awards in 2015. She might be described as

a clown dancer. Her lithe body is ready to contort into many a dance move as her performance entity enlarges and amplifies her feelings.

She has teamed up with Washington Ensemble Theatre and Ali Mohamed elGasseir to create a unique experience of the Henrik Ibsen play, A Doll’s House. There are so many aspects of this evening that are intriguing and beguiling, at least from the

Celebrating 41 Years!

Janet Jackson reschedules tour with Seattle date, Linkin Park announces Key Arena show

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The on-again, off-again Janet Jackson tour is apparently on again. Renamed the “State of the World” tour, the R&B-pop icon’s new itinerary has her stopping by Key Arena on September 27 and at Portland’s Moda Center two nights later, on September 29. The 56-date run kicks off September 7 at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Lousiana and will visit Phoenix, Dallas, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Boston and Nashville, to name some of the cities.

Plagued by mixed reviews and reportedly disappointing ticket sales, then a surprise announcement that she wanted to start a family, Jackson postponed 75 shows in North America and Europe last year, in what was billed as “The Unbreakable World Tour,” which included a Seattle concert. If you’ve been hanging onto those tickets all these months, contact the ticketing agent to find out if they can be traded for new ones, or inquire about a refund.

The legendary performer gave birth to her first child in January, a boy named Eissa, with husband Wissam Al Mana, although it was announced this week as well that the couple is divorcing. Tickets go on sale May 5 (10am) at LiveNation.com, or by phone at 1-800-745-3000.

If you’re a Linkin Park fan, get ready to do cartwheels from knowing that the band is touring again – after a multi-year break – and is scheduled to appear October 14 at Key Arena. The nu-metal group, which rose to international fame on the success of its early recordings, Hybrid Theory and Meteora, is putting out its seventh studio album on May 19 titled One More Light. I’m not crazy about the leadoff single, “Heavy,” that features guest vocalist Kiiara, but I

I forgot last week to mention one big concert announcement, which is Kendrick Lamar headed to the Tacoma Dome on August 1. Dates for the 2017 Doe Bay Fest on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands, have been revealed. The tenth installment of this grassroots music and arts festival, set in the picturesque landscape of the waterside-situated Doe Bay Resort & Retreat, will take place on August 10-13. The lineup for the event, which has traditionally featured a great list of Northwest indie folk and rock acts, will likely not be unveiled until this summer and festival organizers have hinted at the possibility of not announcing the artist roster at all and instead allowing it to be a surprise to attendees, who flock to Doe Bay Fest yearly in droves and have made it a sold out event since its inception. Finally, HBO premiered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony televised special last weekend and will continue to air it throughout the upcoming weeks. The program features performances by the 2017 class of inductees, including Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Yes, Nile Rodgers and Seattle’s own Pearl Jam, who close out the ceremony with a few of their well-known songs, such as “Alive” and “Better Man.”

Melissa Etheridge and Lea Michele bring different musical styles to Seattle on back-to-back nights LEA MICHELE MOORE THEATRE May 8 What ever happened to Rachel Barry, the snobbish yet immensely talented high school diva-in-the-making from “Glee”?

Before the TV series sang its final note in March 2015, Barry had rolled back into Lima, Ohio after a successful Broadway debut and an overly ambitious attempt at starring in her own television show that completely bombed. Did she go back to New York? Or did she return to LA? Or did she stick it out at McKinley High and singularly take over the glee club (much to Kurt’s chagrin)? Unless there’s a reunion special being planned by Ryan Murphy, we’ll never quite know.

I can report, however, that Lea Michele, who marvelously played Barry in the Fox comedy, moved on from “Glee” and appeared in another Murphy series, “Scream Queens.” She also released two albums of her own material, 2014’s Louder and this year’s Places; the former includes the emotional track “If I Say So” that was penned following the death of her boyfriend and “Glee” co-star Cory Monteith. And while she hasn’t made a full return to Broadway, where she launched her career in a production of Les Miserables in 1995 and later earned a Drama Desk Award nomination for her role in Spring Awakening, Michele has performed in several Broadway special events and fundraisers in recent years.

Worth noting is the native New Yorker’s longtime alliance and support of the LGBT community, from her participation with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS to her performances at the 2009 Human Rights Campaign dinner and a month later joining Spring Awakening alum Jonathan Groff at a fundraiser for True Colors Cabaret, a project that supports Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender equality. Just last year, Michele appeared in a touching video that honored the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.

In a recent interview with Mix 106.1 radio station in Philadelphia, where she kicked off her tour at the Merriam Theatre on May 1, she divulged a few details about what she’s performing in the show, saying that besides a bunch of songs from Places and a couple from Louder, she’s also assembled a section of the concert with “Glee” cover tunes. Me thinks Michele might just belt out “Defying Gravity,” or “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” when she performs May 8 at the Moore Theatre. But there were so many good songs included in that series, and so many of them featured her as lead vocalist, that it’ll be interesting to hear which ones she chose for the tour. “Firework” and “Without You” are two of my personal favorites, and I also loved how she stood out in “Keep Holding On” and “The Scientist.”

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer MELISSA ETHERIDGE PARAMOUNT THEATRE May 7 Melissa Etheridge has literally been one of the strongest voices of the LGBT family, using her songwriting and music to inspire a younger generation of Gay people to love themselves and to move past life’s toughest challenges. The Grammy and Oscar winner’s self-titled debut from 1988, which I still listen to frequently, was almost entirely devoted to a painful breakup. With tracks like “Similar Features” and “Bring Me Some Water,” that record has to be one of the best rock albums by any singer-songwriter out there, not to mention the fiery “Like the Way I Do” became an anthem for anybody who ever suffered from a shattered heart; the live version of that hit blew

me away the first time I listened to it.

As she experienced changes in her life, such as publicly coming out in 1993, or being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, so did her music, at least the lyrics reflected what she was going through. The Kansas-born artist expanded her talents to social and political issues, penning the song “I Need to Wake Up” for the documentary film An Inconvenient Truth, which earned her an Academy Award in 2006. Similarly, she wrote “Four Days” following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and a year ago released the powerful single “Pulse” that she crafted within days following the Orlando tragedy. Since the 2016 presidential election, Etheridge has also been very active on social media critiquing Trump and rallying her LGBT brothers and sisters to be “stronger together.” Slightly off topic, the rock icon now owns and operates a marijuana business in California. How could you not love this woman?

Her latest music venture is Memphis Rock and Soul, an album devoted to the Stax Records catalog, covering twelve gems from the historic label, including “Respect Yourself (People Stand Up),” “I’m a Lover,” “Wait a Minute” and “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember.” It’s a soulfulbluesy journey for Etheridge, a refreshing excursion from her rockier material that begs to be heard live. Lucky for Seattle fans, she’ll be in town this weekend to perform many of these songs, and quite possibly some of her own. Her set list will lean heavily on Memphis Rock and Soul, so don’t go expecting her to do all of the big hits; although she may do a few of them.

Dido & Aeneas: Pacific MusicWorks with UW Chamber Singers build a musical palace of unrivaled beauty

DIDO & AENEAS PACIFIC MUSICWORKS & UW CHAMBER SINGERS MEANY THEATER April 30 Rely upon Stephen Stubbs and Pacific MusicWorks to make the familiar fresh and new. Their chamber production of Henry Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas – the most frequently performed of Purcell’s operatic works –is familiar to every opera-lover, just as Dido’s iconic death aria is familiar background music for dozens of shows and films, from “Justified” to The Man Who Cried. Yet in the hands of Pacific MusicWorks, Purcell’s tragic opera sounds surprising, even to those of us who have listened to its gorgeous music and sighed over its sad story for years.

It’s always a melancholy joy to hear Dido & Aeneas – melancholy because it reminds us that if Purcell had not died at the age of 35 we would have an English opera tradition to rival the Italians or the French.

It’s a joy, however, because Purcell’s undying music will always fill the ear and the imagination with fabulous images. English opera is distinctively different from other national styles – crisp and vivid, humorous, direct, and cleanly delineated in a way that the lush traditions of Europe are not. Purcell was the master who was leading others into a new way of fusing music and drama for the theater-loving English. It’s a miracle he made so much music before his early death, and a tragedy that he did not live long enough to establish the new art form he worked so hard to develop.

Like Purcell’s life, Dido & Aeneas is very short – less than half the length of a regular opera. One always wishes it were longer, even though it feels like a complete narrative. The plot, drawn from Virgil’s Aeneid, is a bit hasty. The Queen of Carthage falls in love with the Prince of Troy who is fleeing the lost war and attempting to found a new nation. Dido’s lady in waiting, Belinda, persuades the Queen to give in to her feelings for the visiting prince. Dido resists the urge; then embraces it. She and Aeneas fall in love and almost immediately part due to the bad graces of a Sorceress who wants to ruin the queen by breaking her heart. The Sorceress sends a false spirit in the form of Hermes to tell Aeneas that Jove demands he continue his journey. Aeneas leaves and Dido kills herself. End of story – except for a very funny hornpipe where the sailors take leave of their girlfriends. It’s a brilliant work, melodic and incisive – yet we wish for more.

Pacific MusicWorks gives us more by adding some of Purcell’s own music in the form of a prelude and postlude, and by including two magnificent guitar pieces by Purcell’s contemporary, Francesco Corbetta, in places where indicated guitar music is lost. Artistic Director Stubbs performed these pieces himself on the baroque guitar – an instrument with a bright, dramatic sound. His array of rhythmic stroking, strumming, and plucking was not only beautiful but fascinating to watch, and the variations on themes intricately braided.

Purcell’s own musical tribute to King James formed the framing choruses to the opera, with a notable solo by tenor Jakob Jósef Orliński in “Why are all the muses mute?” The UW Chamber Choir, twentythree singers strong, was the echoing choral voice that repeated and developed central

ideas throughout the prelude, opera, and postlude, not only with their singing, but with their very active role-playing. It was a delight to see the choristers take such a lively part in the drama, as courtiers, townsfolk, sailors, and abandoned “nymphs of the shore.”

The opera itself, with its prophetic melodies, has a feeling of doom – somehow we know it will not end well. The opening chorus calls on Dido to “banish sorrow, banish care / grief should ne’er approach the fair” but Dido is tormented from the first to the last, first from unrequited love, then from abandonment. You don’t have to be a queen to know what that feels like – we identify with her longing and anxiety because the slow, heart-rending music speaks to a universal human condition. Soprano Holly Boaz sang the pivotal role of Belinda, Dido’s lady in waiting, with a lilting soprano and a vivid stage presence that urged the shy prince to “pursue thy conquest love.”

When it came time to switch sides in the second scene and become a witch, Boaz cackled gleefully over Dido’s fate with equal commitment and effectiveness.

As the drama unfolds we see the stolid Aeneas, played with noble restraint by baritone Brendan Tuohy, bamboozled by the false Hermes into leaving Dido, chang-

ing his mind and offering to stay, only to be rejected for, as Dido says, having “once a thought of leaving me.” The great thing about this drama, based on the libretto of Nahume Tate, is that Dido and Aeneas act out feelings more than actions – how we all feel in the throes of love, loss, and rejection. Most of us don’t choose death over reconciliation, or blame the gods for making us leave our lovers. But in Purcell’s music, moving like waves of hope and despair, we see pure feelings rather than rational behavior acted out. This is a description of most operas, of course – dramatic feelings that put the kibosh on reason – but there’s a purity to Purcell’s rendition of this iconic story that is especially moving.

A much-needed dose of humor in the midst of all this sorrow was provided by tenor Ross Hauck, who performed the drunken sailor with all the rascality that the lyrics suggest, telling his fellow sailors to take “a boozy short leave” from their “nymphs on the shore,” with “vows of returning / though never intending / to visit them more.” He sallied through his aria like Puck making trouble in the forest of Arden, and gave us a good laugh in the face of tragedy.

Pacific MusicWorks was, as ever, the main attraction of the evening. With only

seven players, this brilliant ensemble built a musical palace of unrivaled beauty. I had only two wishes that, if granted, would have made the evening perfect. First, I wish that the text had been either supplied or projected. Even though the opera is in English, it’s not your everyday English, and not all the singers pronounced the words with equal clarity. I practically know this opera by heart, but I still would have welcomed an assist – so I imagine those seeing it for the first time would have appreciated having the text as well.

My second wish is that the evening’s Dido, mezzo soprano Laura Pudwell, had looked the part a little more. She sang convincingly – though her rendition of the great death aria was, for my taste, too loud to be lovelorn – but we don’t really think of Dido as a gray-haired lady wearing glasses.

As my opera buddy said, “There was some cougar action going on there.” Granted, this was a concert version, which means that visual elements like costumes and sets are suspended. But Dido is a fiercely proud, passionate queen in the throes of erotic love. The production needed to be a little more persuasive on that score in order to meet the splendid heights of Purcell’s deathless opera.

Cherdonna begins by introducing us to what apparently is one of her favorite theater pieces, A Doll’s House. She talks to the audience members and shows us parts of the set and a great big pink chair that is quite apparently “hers.” She doesn’t really tell us why this piece is so important to her, but we just accept that it clearly is.

In a way, it’s like a doll’s house that Cherdonna is playing with – and that is likely a large part of the intent of combining these two entities together. Ibsen’s A Doll’s House is considered one of the most famous early feminist plays, even if Ibsen himself did not necessary consider himself a feminist.

The character Nora Helmer has done something considered illegal and quite scandalous in her time: in order to help her husband during a time of great illness, she takes out a bank loan fraudulently, which works to help him back to health. However, she could not tell him that truth. The threat of that action becoming known might undo everything in her life – her marriage, her standing in society, her ability to parent her children.

As the action of the play progresses, she realizes that she has been treated as a doll, from the time growing up in her father’s home through her entire marriage. She’s also participated in her own infantilization and treated parenting as if her children and her life were playing in a doll’s house. She determines that she cannot stay in this doll house if she wants to become her real adult self, and must leave.

In this iteration, the full cast of the Ibsen play is present and whole segments of the actual script are fitfully performed until or unless Cherdonna interferes either because she’s so enthusiastic or she wants something else to happen. Some of that interruption is very, very funny.

insightful social commentary. Trashing the current overemphasis on political correctness, Bunny breaks down some of the latest buzzwords that we’re all supposed to remember for every occasion as we “evolve.” Sometimes, Bunny feels that we’re evolving away from common sense!

While Bunny shies away from politics in this performance – because one train wreck on stage per night is enough and we all need a break from this toxic election – she doesn’t shy away from gender politics and the new pronoun we’re forced to learn every time Will Smith’s son puts on a dress.

After Caitlyn Jenner reached out to Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz to become his “trans ambassador,” Bunny feels that it’s time for the gloves to come off.

You don’t want to miss Bunny doing Cait’s twisted version of “My Favorite Things.”

Theater queens rejoice! In her loooooong career in nightclubs, Bunny has never delved much into show tunes, but in Trans-Jester!, Bunny brings it on home with a show-stopping finale featuring two classics from Gypsy and Follies. The eclectic evening also resurrects songs by country star Lynn Anderson, Millie Jackson and even an original tune which pokes fun at the dating life of whatever sex it is you want to call this “Lady.”

PLEASE NOTE: This show is raunchy.

Not politically correct by any definition – that’s the whole point! So if that’s not your cup of tea, you should honestly skip it. Or prepare to grab a drink and laugh, cheer and possibly even be challenged by a salty

what Cherdonna does because a) it might be somewhat improvisational and depend on the night, and b) it is so much more fun to experience it for yourself without any spoilers.

Leah Salcido Pfenning as Nora and Samie Spring Detzer as Mrs. Linde interact with Cherdonna the most. Nora gets the most annoyed and Mrs. Linde finds her hysterically funny. The other characters fall somewhere in the range. Sally Brady as the Nanny gets a lot of deadpan reaction time to good effect.

The event – it’s hard to call it a play because it’s more of a deconstruction of one

than one itself – falls apart when it tries to present the serious apex of the Ibsen play straight through. Cherdonna has had her feelings hurt and she leaves and the play is allowed to continue without the interruptions.

Unfortunately, it does not work to try to stick a serious ending on to the deconstructed and very funny first 3/4s as if to make a “real” point. The actors try to present the play truthfully, but it simply isn’t the time for it. It might be that somehow Cherdonna is trying to find her “real” self, too, but that conceptual “device” falls flat here.

By the end, it feels like an experiment

gone wrong. However, the first 3/4s are so much fun that I really heartily recommend you see it. Because that part really is genius, and if you don’t go, you’ll miss that part of it. Creators el-Gasseir/Kuehner should never have allowed Cherdonna to leave the stage.

SGN EXCLUSIVE: An interview with Lady Bunny – The Trans-Jester! appearing at the SIFF Egyptian Theatre on Thursday, May 11 back hard-won LGBT rights deserve more focus than whether you identify as gender queer, gender fluid or non-binary today? To me, it does.

MK: As a pal of RuPaul, and working nearly 40 years in the biz, are there any queens that have star quality or longevity?

LB: I think you know the ones from “Drag Race” who have staying power.

Dame Edna is a genius who may be retiring. Frank Marino has been ruling Las Vegas for decades. Christeene, the slutty, trashy rapper drag from Austin is so demented that she flips my wig. And Seattle’s own Dina Martina is a riot who is totally unique who packs houses nationwide.

MK: Back to the show: There are lots of political parodies. What do you like most about doing them?

LB: I’m not a stand-up, so I like to perform numbers with some patter in between.

And changing the words of a popular song is just fun. In Trans-Jester!, I perform parodies of everything from Adele, Bruno Mars, Prince, Katy Perry and even a few showtunes, which is a very new direction for me. I do sing a couple of songs straight, and there is also an original song or two in this show. But I tend to skip the politics in this show other than a few digs at Trump.

The news is currently so bleak that I prefer that people come out and take a break from all of that and just laugh!

MK: What is your best advice for LGBTQ youth?

LB: As far as advice for youth, there is no blanket advice for youth because they all have different issues. RuPaul is my old pal, and she’s the one who is the mentor with positive messages of self-acceptance, blah, blah, blah. I’m her twisted sister who never claims to be a role model, although I am modeling a few rolls out the top and bottom of my girdle! I like raunchy humor for those who like that sort of thing. But as someone who grew up in a smaller city in the Bible Belt where folks were not very accepting, my advice would be to get away from hateful people. It worked for me. Except for Bianca. Can’t seem to shake her. You know, there really wasn’t anyone on “Drag Race: as mean and vicious as Bianca – in Season 8, Season 9, or even ISIS for that matter!

MK: Burning Question: Will there be anything like Wigstock again?

LB: We did do a Wigstock-themed cruise for the past two Augusts in NYC and have a few projects we’re working on.

So the festival of wigs, love and hairpiece didn’t totally curl up and dye! Stay tuned!

SIFF EGYPTIAN THEATRE Thursday, May 11 @ 7pm Lady Bunny is bringing her acclaimed show The Trans-Jester! to the SIFF Egyptian Cinema next Thursday, May 11. (For details read the press release article in this week’s SGN.) I had the opportunity to chat with Lady Bunny, herself, via email this past week about her life, her friendships, her politics and her upcoming show and here is our conversation.

MK Scott: Hello, Lady Bunny! Finally, I have a chance to talk to you! So, I hear you are bringing your Trans-Jester! show to Seattle. Tell us about it?

Lady Bunny: I feel we’ve become so politically correct that they’re about to make Dick Van Dyke change his name to Penis Van Lesbian. The show was “triggered” by the newfound animosity between the drag and trans community highlighted by “Drag Race” getting reamed for using the words tranny and shemail. Do you know where shemail came from? My website, 20 years ago, put my contact info as “You can shemail Lady Bunny at….” It was a silly play on words because if you are emailing a drag queen, you might use a feminine pun. It was in no way an attempt to demean trans people. If you’re up in arms about a pun when there are people trying to bash you and tell you which bathrooms to use, this is baffling to me. RuPaul is no enemy of trans people – he’s a drag queen, for chrissakes! We lived together in Atlanta and NYC in areas known from trans hookers and we adored getting to know them.

But Trans-Jester! isn’t only about gender issues at large, it’s about my own gender exploration and about how tired I am of political correctness gone wild. Unlike Donald Trump, I’m not using my fondness for political incorrectness to mask my hatred of Muslims, immigrants or women.

Politically, I’m to the left of Bernie Sanders. I am that butt-hurt liberal who signs petitions about the bee population dying.

At the same time, I like to laugh at sick and twisted humor and I miss Joan Rivers. And it is not trans-phobic if I make jokes about Caitlyn Jenner. I respect her right to transition, but I just wish the dumb bitch would transition out of the Republican Party which seeks to destroy the rights of the very community she’s trying to join! Imagine a 65-year-old man getting a brand new pussy.

It’s like putting a Godiva chocolate in a pile of dog shit!

MK: I have seen you in town for Seattle Pride. What do you like most about Seattle?

LB: Pike Street Market. I’m on a diet.

Well, not exactly. I’m on a diet only because Trump killed Meals On Wheels. But I drool just thinking about the fresh seafood, those crumpets and those enormous, mouthwatering berries of the Northeast. I have also loved DJing at The Cuff several times, and will be back to do Tacoma Pride with their sister club on July 8th.

MK: What has been the funniest thing to happen to you during one of your shows?

LB: Bianca Del Rio canceled and the show improved immeasurably! My relationship with Bianca reminds me of that TV show “Feud.” Not because we fight, but because she looks like Mamacita! In truth, I performed at a club with a low ceiling. I’m tall and wear high hair. The crowd lost it

when the sprinkler snagged my wig and I couldn’t get it loose. They howled!

MK: You lost not one, but two pals this year. What do you remember most of Alexis (Arquette)? Lady Chablis?

LB: Alexis was more of an acquaintance than a pal, and I hadn’t seen her during the last 15 years of her life. I was somewhat puzzled to read all of the glowing remembrances on Facebook about what a nice person she was. While I’m sad that she passed, one thing Alexis was not was a sweetheart when I knew her. Ask the people whose faces she threw drinks into.

I met Lady Chablis when I was 13, sneaking into a gay bar in Chattanooga, Tennessee and was a fan of her act long before she hit it big with Midnight in the Garden of Evil. She was one of a kind and had such magnetism and wit that there truly was no one like her. I toured with her and we became great friends. She called me “Country Cunt” because I’m from down

south. She also like to say that “Bunny, you remind me of a...what is it..a Saltine?.. no, a Ritz?, no, a Triscuit?, no….oh that’s it!

A cracker!” We were close enough to joke about anything and no one had a mouth like her. I did attend her funeral in Savannah in full mourning drag complete with a veil to show my respect to one of drag’s greats.

Interestingly enough, Chablis came from a time when she “did drag” with wigs and lots of make-up, but Chablis was trans and had lived as a woman named Brenda on and off stage for decades. We came from a time when different segments of the community stuck together. Now, with Facebook offering 56 different gender variations you can pick from, I worry that we are putting each other into boxes and infighting rather than bonding to fight the very real enemies within the new administration. I do not dismiss anyone’s individual concerns, since all of our concerns are different. But does an anti-LGBT administration seeking to roll

2017 Tony Awards: Bette Midler, Nathan Lane and Josh Groban among this year’s nominees

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer As expected, Bette Midler earned a Tony Award nomination this week for her well-reviewed performance in Hello, Dolly!, playing its titular character, Dolly Gallagher Levi. Unlike a few years ago when the Tony nominating committee overlooked her work in I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers, this time there was no denying the multi-talented entertainer her due recognition in the popular show, which captured 10 nominations total, including Best Revival of a Musical.

Also unsurprisingly, Nathan Lane scored another Tony nod for his work in The Front Page. Should he get called to the podium, it would be his third award following wins for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1996) and The Producers (1991). Meanwhile, pop singer Josh Groban landed his first Tony nomination for his role in Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, which led all nominees with 12, including Best Musical. This marked Groban’s debut on a Broadway stage.

Come From Away, a production that centers on a Canadian town offering shelter to stranded travelers on September 11th, received multiple nominations, including a mention for Best Musical. Before opening on Broadway it enjoyed a local run here in Seattle at the Seattle Rep. Another Emerald City connection that got some Tony love on Tuesday morning is Bartlett Sher, the former Artistic Director at the Intiman The-

atre, who earned a nomination for Best Direction of a Musical for Oslo. And yet another Seattle tie-in is the Divine M herself, who starred in her very first professional theater production with the Seattle Opera in the Who’s Tommy back in 1971.

There’s never a shortage of LGBT actors and creative people included among the Tony Award nominees, and a few of them to note this year, besides Nathan Lane, are David Hyde Pierce, who co-stars in Hello, Dolly! alongside Midler, nabbing one of the five slots for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Cynthia Nixon who squeezed into the tightly contested race of Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in The Little Foxes, and Andrew Rannells, perhaps best known for his TV roles in the HBO series “Girls” and the short-lived comedy “The New Normal,” who was recognized in the category of Best Featured Actor in a Musical, for Falsettos.

Competing for Best Musical, besides Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 and Come From Away, are the stage adaptation of the Bill Murray film Groundhog Day and Dear Evan Hansen, which garnered 9 nominations total, including one for its main star Ben Platt, considered the frontrunner to take home the prize for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Duking it out for Best Play will be A Doll’s House, Part 2, Dear Evan Hansen, Oslo and Sweat.

Through the Looking Glass shines in its 9th season at the Triple Door

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: THE BURLESQUE ALICE IN WONDERLAND THE TRIPLE DOOR April 26-30 Verlaine & McCann Present’s Through the Looking Glass: The Burlesque Alice In Wonderland triumphantly returned to Seattle’s Triple Door last week with a few invigorating surprises and some returning favorites. The wild re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel could not have been given a more fantastical treatment than that of producers Lily Verlaine and Jasper McCann (creators of the annual holiday extravaganza Land of the Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker), and this year’s production did not disappoint.

Now in its 9th season, Through the Looking Glass debuted in spring 2009.

Since that time the narrative has remained the same (a decidedly adult Alice encounters an unruly cast of characters in Wonderland’s exclusive nightclub, The Looking Glass, and tries to oust the evil Queen of Hearts), though the production has continued to evolve. Verlaine & McCann’s strength lies in constantly improving upon their original ideas, and like any professional dance company, in mixing rising talent with established dancers. Waxie Moon, Kitten La Rue, and Ben DeLaCreme were among the stellar original cast members whose interpretations set the tone, though it is now difficult to imagine the roles of the White Queen or Cheshire Cat without the incredibly talented dancer Tory Peil. Imaginatively inventive Guardians a groovy sequel

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Now playing Coasting on the interstellar goodwill generated by their saving the Universe from the genocidal advances of the evil wannabe despot Ronan, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and the freshly sprouted Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), the so-called Guardians of the Galaxy, have just helped a race of goldenskinned beings ruled by the authoritarian Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) in their fight against an energy-eating monstrosity. Their payment? Custody of the fugitive Nebula (Karen Gillan), Gamora’s vindictive sister, and together the crew plans to take her to the proper authorities in order to score the massive bounty for her capture.

For reasons best left unexplained, after the supposedly heroic crew leaves her planet Ayesha suddenly feels duty bound to put a bounty on the Guardians, turning to Quill’s former Captain and cantankerous father figure Yondu (Michael Rooker) to track them down. But throwing things completely out of whack, into the picture, riding atop a spaceship shaped like a giant golden egg, comes the jovial, charismatic Ego (Kurt Russell). Aided by his empathic assistant Mantis (Pom Klementieff), he’s one of the Universe’s few Celestial Beings. He also just so happens to be Quill’s actual father, and he’s been looking for his orphaned son for over 30 Earth years.

Overstuffed and featuring precious little in the way of actual plot, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 nonetheless is a giddy, gofor-broke sequel that I actually enjoyed a tiny bit more than its hit 2014 predecessor.

It also shows Marvel learned a few solid lessons from their mishandling of Joss Whedon as it pertained to Avengers: Age of Ultron, and wanting to make sure that they keep this film’s writer/director James Gunn in the company’s good graces they’ve given him free reign to run wild and take this series in whatever direction he wants to. It’s a self-contained adventure, one that

drops only the faintest, most non-essential of hints where other stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are heading, the movie all the more enjoyable because of this.

This comic book rule-breaking bravado is apparent right from the start, Gunn staging the first big action sequence juxtaposed against the opening credits. But instead of focusing on the Guardians courageously battling some big, bad monster, he keeps the diminutive Baby Groot center stage, the adorable, doe-eyed creature dancing through the carnage to the groove-worthy riffs of Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky.” The director could almost care less how Quill, Gamora, Drax and Rocket emerge triumphant, instead choosing to establish the freewheeling, devil-may-care tone that will become this sequel’s signature motif, the explosions and pyrotechnics secondary to the jokes and ingeniously zany visuals.

For the first hour this is glorious, almost to the point that the fact Gunn hasn’t done a heck of a lot to put forward a complex, let alone coherent, plot didn’t even register on me. It isn’t until the necessities and requirements of a big budget Marvel comic book adventure come into play that the rudimentary nature of the narrative rears its

somewhat ugly head, and as well-staged as everything might be, there’s also precious little weight or suspenseful intensity to anything that eventually ends up happening. In fact, what is built up to be an emotionally devastating turn of events ends up being nothing of the sort, and even someone paying the ultimate sacrifice in order to hopefully see the Universe saved and the Guardians once again victorious disappointingly underwhelms.

Yet, I liked that Gunn decided to focus so much of the story on Gamora and Yondu, that he went to such great lengths to round out their characters and make them an integral part of this particular section of the MCU. I also loved that he allowed Drax more freedom to be a part of this nonconformist intergalactic family, especially because I found Bautista to be a little flat in the first film. Here, however, he’s given some of the best lines, delivering his comebacks with a pithy, unsentimentally blunt obliviousness that’s frequently hysterical.

There’s also some solid stuff involving Quill and Gamora that’s cute without being cloying, Pratt and Saldana displaying a naturalistic chemistry that recalls 1980s are-they-or-aren’t-they romantic comedy television à la “Cheers” or “Moonlighting.”

though, the veteran actor fitting seamlessly into Gunn’s corner of the MCU with electrifying joie de vivre. Ego isn’t just a Celestial, he’s also a bona fide planet, the action icon tackling this challenge with a fervent brio that’s divine. The actor’s recent run over the past decade-plus, which includes stints as a member of the Fast and Furious ensemble, working with Quentin Tarantino on Death Proof and The Hateful Eight, portraying the grizzled offshore installation manager in Deepwater Horizon, winning an Olympic Gold Medal as legendary coach Herb Brooks in Miracle and shepherding a posse into the heart of unflinching darkness in 2015’s brilliant Bone Tomahawk, has been extraordinary, Russell giddily rising to any and all challenges Gunn chooses to throw his direction with confident gusto.

The effects, while having a noticeable CGI sheen, are creatively complex, same going for Judianna Makovsky’s (Seabiscuit) colorfully refined costumes. The whole thing recalls Mike Hodges’ 1980 cult classic Flash Gordon from a visual standpoint, a comparison I do not make lightly and mean as a major compliment, the relaxed devil-may-care style suiting Gunn’s wild child sensibilities perfectly. I’d say the only thing missing is a soundtrack composed by Queen; but considering that Quill’s mixtape for this adventure is filled with the likes of Sam Cooke, Cat Stevens, George Harrison, Glen Campbell, Fleetwood Mac and Cheap Trick, I’d say the film has that element covered, too, the filmmaker’s usage of Looking Glass’ “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” frankly outstanding.

I don’t think either of Guardians of the Galaxy films are particularly great, but they are a heck of a lot of fun, Vol. 2 so overflowing in passionate imagination taking my eyes off of it for even a single second proved to be impossible. Gunn’s vision continues to be the most inspired of any director currently working inside of Marvel’s universe, and like a dancing Baby Groot I’m pretty sure at this point I’d jive right along to any beat he chooses to lay down next.

Torrey Pines: stop-motion animated film screening at the Seattle Public Library on May 12 The Seattle Public Library will host a FREE screening of Torrey Pines, a stop-motion animated film with a live musical score, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, May 12 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636.

Premiering at Seattle’s TWIST (LGBTQ) Film Festival last year, Torrey Pines is a stop-motion animated feature film by local filmmaker Clyde Petersen. Based on a true story, the film is a queer punk coming-of-age tale that takes place in Southern California in the early 1990s. Raised by a schizophrenic single mother, Petersen’s life story unfolds in a series of baffling and hallucinated events. With a mother fueled by hallucinations of political conspiracy and family dysfunction, 12-year-old Petersen is taken on a cross-country adventure that will forever alter the family as they know it.

The film is 60 minutes long and unrated.

It will be presented with a live musical score performed by Petersen, Zach Burba, Jacob Jaffe, Steve Moore and special guests.

Petersen is a Seattle-based artist, working in film, animation, music, installation and more. He is a member of the transgender and queer communities in Seattle. He travels the world with his punk band Your Heart Breaks and hosts the Internet film series “Boating with Clyde” in a small handmade boat in the Washington Park Arboretum.

His work has been featured around the world at the FLARE: London Lesbian and

Hypnotically unsettling Song a darkly fascinating terror

She hires occultist Joseph Solomon (Steve Oram) to lead her through a ritual that will, when it comes to an end, take her into the very heart of emotional darkness. It will take months, maybe even a full year, and there is no guarantee that what Sophia wants to have happen at the end of the ordeal will come to pass. More, Joseph isn’t sold his client’s intentions are pure, and initially isn’t so sure he wants to put himself in danger if the chance exists she’ll give up on the ritual halfway through.

Nonetheless, the pair gather supplies, make their preparations and seal up the house as neither of them can leave until things have reached their conclusion, both ready to descend into the pits of Hell just for the fleeting chance they might have the opportunity to touch Heaven’s angelic floorboards.

Liam Gavin’s A Dark Song is a hypnotically tense occult thriller, the young writer/ director crafting a superior narrative feature debut that’s beautiful in its sinisterly startling vigor. The film digs under the skin, taking its time to get to know its two primary characters as they travel along this strange, surreal journey to a place beyond imagining. It is an examination of grief and loss, but not in any sort of cliché or melodramatic way. Instead, Gavin looks at Sophia’s hurt and despair through a lens of fortified resilience, her inability to admit just how much she is hurting potentially the greatest roadblock to her and Joseph suc-

cessfully completing the ritual.

There’s not really a lot more to it. The film revolves entirely around these two characters, Gavin allowing the pair’s time together to evolve and mutate alongside the ritual’s increasingly twisted and ugly progressions, insight into why they’re both in the house determined to see things to the end coming gradually and not all at once.

The director’s way of revealing information is eerily effective, an aura of dread seeping into the very foundation of the narrative, allowing for just the thought of things going wrong to be enough to send chills up even the stoutest spine.

What’s interesting is that the movie isn’t interested in engaging in easy jump scares or typical horror theatrics. While the super-

natural elements are never in doubt, they’re only part of the emotional equation. Gavin examines grief in an enthrallingly antagonist manner, Sophia’s hardened heart not so much looking for solace as it is longing for retribution. This dynamic is juxtaposed against the steadfast resilience put forth by Joseph, his reticence to spending time with this woman he initially views as a selfishly privileged elite used to getting what she wants giving way to a form of protective understanding that’s developed over the ritual’s painful trivialities and exhausting requirements.

It’s the banal intricacies of what it is they are doing that slowly becomes one of the more fascinating elements of the story.

Gavin spends a lot of time dwelling on

all of the ritual’s minutia, allowing for its ponderous necessities to help Sophia and Joseph break through their distaste for one another and produce a connection that’s uncomfortably pure and potentially much more long-lasting if things work out as they want them to. When the pair finally open up to one another, when they let go of the elements poisoning their souls, the emotional floodgates are unlocked, the catharsis of these revelations warily sitting alongside the perilous realities of the ritual’s supernatural ramifications.

Both actors do a nice job, especially Walker, the expressiveness of her final scenes shattering in their intimate intensity.

The movie is also incredibly well shot by Cathal Watters (Viva), especially considering the scarcity of locations the cinematographer has at his disposal, the evocative way he drifts inside production designer Conor Dennison’s interiors suitably unnerving. I also was drawn to Ray Harman’s lyrically passionate score, the music adding just the right grace notes to the story, the composer’s themes complimenting the onscreen action, never overpowering it.

Gavin is in complete control, and by the time things explode into chaotic depravity I was so enamored with the characters and their plight I found myself holding my breath in desperate hope things were going to somehow work out for the both of them.

Sophia and Joseph become real people by the end of the film, and as such the dangers of the ritual, when they finally make themselves concrete and visible to the naked eye, become all the more powerful. A Dark Song is a beguiling terror that saves its best reveals right up until the end, the line between good and evil, right and wrong, Heaven and Hell, hypnotically blurring until they practically no longer exist.

TRANSLATIONS continued from cover

helped program the darn thing back during its fresh-faced early days when it was tentatively poking its head out from behind the closet door. As such, the fact Translations has expanded so considerably these past few years has me grinning ear-to-ear.

A lot of thanks for this must go to Translations Festival Director and Three Dollar Bill Cinema Volunteer Coordinator Sam Berliner. He’s been in charge of the festival for five years now, so the fact it’s quickly blossomed into one of Seattle’s must-see cinematic events is in large part due to his steady leadership. I sat down with Sam for a conversation to talk about the festival, its expansion and where he sees Translations going in the future. Here are some of the highlights from that brief back-and-forth: Sara Michelle Fetters: First off, even if my input was minimal, thank you for reaching out and having me assist in this year’s programming. It was a joy to return to Translations. With that in mind, what were you looking for this year as you began to program? What were you hoping you and your team were going to discover?

Sam Berliner: It is always exciting when the team starts our research process diving into the new films each year. I always hope for fresh stories, whether that be from other cultures and perspectives (this year we have three narrative films about Iranian Trans men; isn’t that amazing?!), or films that highlight aspects of the Trans experience that need more global attention (like Free CeCe and its examination of the staggering rates of violence towards Trans women of color) or films that recognize the complexity of being Trans as just one aspect of a person and the intersectionality of identity (like our shorts program “Intertwined”). I am always looking for films that will be meaningful to our Seattle community, both as a Trans audience member and for folks who are new to the community and want to learn.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What has that been like for you, then? Programming this Festival the past few years? Watching it grow and evolve to the point it’s now the biggest Transgender Film Festival in the United States?

Sam Berliner: We’re actually pretty sure that Translations is now the largest Transgender film festival in the world! Isn’t that terrific?

It has been a huge honor for me to direct Translations for the past five years. Seeing it grow is unbelievably gratifying. Knowing that we are able to create such special experiences for our community is what drives me to do this work and to keep it growing. It is an amazing time to be a filmmaker as well as a programmer with a huge

explosion of trans-related media out there to choose from. Translations reflects this in our growth and in the breadth of film programs we are able to offer.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Why does the Translations Film Festival continue to matter? Why do Transgender films need their own exclusive showcase?

Sam Berliner: Translations is important because film is such a powerful medium. It is unbelievably affirming for a gender-nonconforming or Trans person to see their stories reflected on the big screen.

And it is an incredibly useful tool for allies to develop empathy and understanding for and about Trans folks.

Having the festival focus solely on Trans films creates a safe space for community building, resource sharing, and education.

It also shows that Trans films, stories and people matter and are deserving of our very own specialized showcase. It is one thing to be included in a larger LGBTQ festival, which is of course important in its own way, especially in building connections across the wider queer community, but it is quite another thing to focus every single screening on Transgender stories, to emphasize gender rather than sexuality. Especially in the current political climate, we need these types of spaces and I am grateful to help create this one for our community.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Do you worry that the festival is making too bold a leap this year? That it’s too big?

Sam Berliner: Not at all! Translations has been bursting at the seams for a number of years, and I am thrilled to be making the jump from one long weekend to now two,

with a few screenings and events during the week as well. With a four-day festival it was extremely competitive, since we only had a handful of available slots. With more and more Trans films being made the decision process was getting harder and we had to turn down a lot of great movies. Now we have space to breathe and an opportunity to tell so many more stories! I am thrilled and excited to have expanded the festival this year.

Sara Michelle Fetters: How does the Translations Film Festival continue to fit into Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s overall mission?

Sam Berliner: Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s mission is to strengthen, connect and reflect diverse communities through queer film and media, and Translations absolutely has continued to do just that. With the expanded festival we’re able to screen over 70 films, including six different shorts programs, from 20 countries! Through our community co-presenter program that also continues to expand we are able to reach audience members who otherwise may not have heard about the festival and who are in need of resources and support that can be found at Translations.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What are some of the highlights from this year’s festival that just make you sit back and smile?

Sam Berliner: I’m personally thrilled to be screening Real Boy on Saturday, May 13 at the Northwest Film Forum with director Shaleece Haas and subjects Ben Wallace and Joe Stevens (of the Seattle-originating band Coyote Grace) in attendance. I associate produced this film with my good

friend Shaleece and have been witness to its amazing growth from just the two of us working at her kitchen table, to the international attention and awards the film has now garnered. In fact, the film won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at TWIST just this past fall! I am so excited to share Real Boy with our Translations audience. Plus, after the film, Joe and Ben will play a concert at about 9:30pm at the Northwest Film Forum, which is going to be awesome!

We’re also partnering with the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington to bring the film Criminal Queers to the festival. The screening will be held at the gallery on Thursday, May 11 in conjunction with the exhibition “MOTHA and Chris E. Vargas present: Trans Hirstory in 99 Objects” which all audience members are encouraged to check out. Directors Chris Vargas and Eric Stanley will be in attendance, and together with Kioyomi Fujikawa they’ll be having an extended post-screening conversation.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What else are you excited about audiences discovering at this year’s festival?

Sam Berliner: We’re doing something new at this year’s festival with “No Dumb Questions: How to be a Trans Ally,” a special free event at the Capitol Hill Branch of the Seattle Public Library on Monday, May 8. There will be two sessions, and we’ll be screening the Sundance award winning short film No Dumb Questions. After that I’ll be doing a Trans 101 training followed by questions from the audience. Folks can ask whatever they want and there will also

be an anonymous question box. This is really an opportunity for community members who are new to Trans issues to have a safe space to learn and ask questions. I have been doing these types of trainings for the past seven years for various groups, schools and nonprofit organizations and am happy to offer this event through Translations.

We’re asking folks to reserve their seat on our ticketing website since it’s proving to be quite popular.

I’m also very happy to be offering an increased number of free and discounted screenings this year to help make the festival more accessible. The first screening on each day is only $5 online and $6 at the box office, while every screening at the 12th Avenue Arts building is free.

In addition, we’ve got a bunch of special guests and filmmakers attending Translations which is one of the reasons film festivals are so much fun. Free CeCe and Real Boy I’ve already mentioned, but there’s also

So Long Suburbia where director Samuel Shanahoy and many of the cast members will be in attendance, and as always a number of shorts programs feature their filmmakers there in person to talk about their respective films.

Considering the current political climate, there is so much work to be done that it can be daunting. Translations is a great opportunity to connect with resources and groups in the community. In addition to our co-presenters, all listed on our website, we are partnering with LGBTQ Allyship again this year to table at a number of screenings to register people to vote, collect signatures around “Decline to Sign” and to learn about Democracy Vouchers. Additionally, we’re partnering with Black & Pink Letter Writing this year to raise awareness around the violence of the prison industrial complex against LGBTQ people, to write postcards to incarcerated folks and to sign people up to be pen pals. We’re also partnering with

Out of the Closet for a special clothing swap where, between May 4 and May 14, folks can swap out clean clothes for alternative garments free of charge. Just say you’re part of Translations!

Sara Michelle Fetters: What’s next for Sam? What do you want to do next?

Sam Berliner: Well, right after the festival I want to sleep! [laughs] After that I am excited to continue my work as a senior programmer for Three Dollar Bill Cinema, to help curate our Outdoor Cinema program in August and help program TWIST this fall. As always I am looking forward to continuing to grow Translations, am excited to attend Frameline: the San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival in San Francisco in June and work the Gender Odyssey Conference here in Seattle in August which I’ve been so lucky to attend since 2009. My group Queer Scouts Seattle has also been growing and we have a camping trip planned for Sep-

tember. Additionally, I hope to get cracking on the next episode of my film Dating Sucks: A Genderqueer Misadventure, an animated webseries about my successes, failures and confusions trying to date as a genderqueer Trans person.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What else is going on with Three Dollar Bill Cinema?

What does the future hold?

Sam Berliner: Three Dollar Bill Cinema has had some recent staffing updates since with Danny Tayara taking over as the Festival Director for TWIST: Seattle Queer Film Festival as well as assuming the mantle of year-round senior programmer.

For myself, I have come onboard as a full time year-round employee, after moving up from San Francisco in August, to continue directing Translations as well as be a senior programmer for the organization.

We had a fantastic auction back in March and are thrilled to have expanded our Reel Queer Youth program to two weeks, one in Tacoma and one in Seattle.

Folks can submit their applications to attend or mentor online. Also, Outdoor Cinema is just around the corner at Cal Anderson Park on the second, third and fourth Fridays in August. Keep an eye out for info on that event soon.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Where does Translations go next?

Sam Berliner: Just as the community, society at large and media representations continue to evolve, so will Translations. It’s an exciting time. I hope to continue to bring meaningful and poignant content to our Seattle-area audiences for Trans folks and our allies. I hope to continue to reach audiences who are in need of these positive messages and community resources, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Sara Michelle Fetters: At the end of the day, what do you hope audiences are talking about after Translations comes to an end?

Sam Berliner: I hope that audiences feel affirmed, educated and supported.

That they find comfort and healing in resonant stories and a safe space to watch them in. I hope they feel reinvigorated in the continued fight for love and justice for our community. We’ve got work to do!
