Celebrating 41 Years!

Depeche Mode, Lea Michelle headed to Seattle

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer If you wore black clothes in high school and came off a little bit freakish, chances are you went home and listened to Depeche Mode. They were music gods back in the ’80s and ’90s, one of the most worshipped new wave bands by the Goth crowd. “People Are People” got me hooked when I heard it on the radio, and the next thing you know I was scouring every record store where I lived to buy their music. Depeche Mode attracted a mass Gay following; every Gay guy I met in college and soon thereafter was a fan of the group, whose other hits include “Personal Jesus,” “Enjoy the Silence,” “Strangelove” and my personal favorite, “Everything Counts.” The legendary British act, led by the alwaysinteresting David Gahan, has included Seattle on the Fall 2017 North American leg of its “Global Spirit Tour,” scheduled to appear October 21 at Key Arena. They’re also playing Portland two days later, October 23 at Moda Center. Tickets to see Depeche Mode live are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone at 1-800745-3000.

Lea Michelle is making her headlining concert debut in Seattle this spring with a May 8 performance at the Moore Theatre.

The stage and television actress, known for her work on the Emmy-winning series “Glee,” has released two albums on her own, 2014’s Louder and the forthcoming Places, which is expected to come out later this year, although a specific date has yet to be announced. What is certain is that she’s a very talented vocalist, so she’ll definitely be belting out some tunes when she arrives to the Emerald City in a couple of months. You’ll be glad to know that Seattle folk act Fleet Foxes has regrouped, after a sixyear break in which some of the members individually launched side projects, and are releasing a new 11-track album titled Crack Up that features the leadoff single “Third of May / Ōdaigahara.” The last album Fleet Foxes put out was 2011’s Helplessness Blues, a critically acclaimed recording that earned the band a Grammy nomination. An upcoming tour is already in the works.

Finally, RIP to singer-songwriter and record label executive Tommy Page, who helped launch the careers of Green Day, Josh Groban, Michael Buble and Alanis Morissette, before releasing his own material, including the charttopping hit “I’ll Be Your Everything.” Page is survived by his husband Charlie and three children.

After a short break, the Seattle native returned donning a black dress with a patterned long jacket and sang “A Million Miles” from Heart’s 2012 album Fanatic and put her own spin on The Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” not to mention a performance of The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” that brought the house down. But it was her stirring delivery of “Alone” that got a standing ovation and loud cheers from the whole audience, ditto for a swingy, acoustic rendition of “Crazy on You” that closed out the main set.

For an encore, Wilson got the theater on its feet again with a rock-soul version of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and gorgeously sang “All I Want to Do is Make Love to You,” which she confessed to not liking at first, though the ballad became one of Heart’s most memorable hits.

Similar to Stevie Nick’s current tour, Ann Wilson is performing shows with music that she wants to do, not pressured to do the songs that made her a household name.

She’s done all that, and she’ll do it again.

But this time it was Wilson being Wilson, and she performed a terrific concert that fans were glad not to have missed.

Her hometown show at the Moore Theatre served as the tour kick off and it continues with appearances in Los Angeles, Denver, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Charleston, South Carolina.

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer ANN WILSON MOORE THEATRE March 8 If the Moore Theatre had windows, Ann Wilson would have blown them out on Wednesday night. The lead singer of Heart belted out classic hits from the group, some from her solo work and several well-known covers, promptly going on stage at 8pm on the dot and performing for two hours with about a five-minute intermission and wardrobe change.

Wilson opened with a fiery redo of The Who’s “The Real Me,” then ripped into a high voltage rendition of “Barracuda” backed by an impressive four-piece band.

Wearing a red pleated dress with gold embroidery, a black overcoat and black tights, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer practically had the crowd eating out of her hand from the beginning. In fact, some fans kept yelling out to her, saying “I love you, Ann!” during every single song break.

She sang a slower version of “What About Love” that gave me chills and wailed on a number called “Fool No More” that was written a year ago. A bluesy cover of “I Put a Spell on You” featured those distinct mighty pipes of the 66 year-old artist.

Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders rock out magnificently in Portland

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer STEVIE NICKS W/THE PRETENDERS MODA CENTER – PORTLAND, OR February 28 Wherever Stevie Nicks goes, so do her fans. This explains why hundreds of Seattleites, myself included, made the threehour trip down to Portland to see the rock queen perform just two months after she played here in the Emerald City. Some of those fans stayed at my hotel and together we giddily made our way to the show together, having never ever met before, though we shared a common obsession for the same artist.

The set list for the Portland performance, part of a twenty-city extension to last year’s successful “24 Karat Gold Tour,” was identical to Nicks’ appearance in Seattle, although she was a bit chattier at the Moda Center, telling longer stories about some of the songs she’d written in her early days. Interestingly, she forgot key pieces to those stories in several instances, or at least retold them differently to the PDX crowd.

Still, she was completely in her element and took the audience on a journey of her career and personal life, unloading a mix of classic hits and rarities from her solo albums and the Fleetwood Mac catalog.

Nicks opened with “Gold and Braid,” from 1981’s Bella Donna album, and then sang a true fan favorite, “If Anyone Falls” from her sophomore effort The Wild Heart as a multi-colored backdrop with images of dancers lit up the stage.

“After you get to be a certain age, you can do anything you really want,” Nicks said to a cheering audience. This was after she informed everyone packed into the basketball arena that this particular tour was different than all the others, in that each song was hand-picked and some of them had never even been performed live until the last few months.

Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders, who are booked on this second leg of the tour as they were on the previous run of dates, sang Tom Petty’s lines on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” flubbing part of the first verse because Nicks made her

gorgeous harmonies they produce. This is a genre that needs to be seen as well as heard to get the full impact of its drama.

The recent concert of tenor arias by George Frederick Handel at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall was a perfect illustration of the visual dimension of baroque music. Led by the Grammy award-winning team of Artistic Director Stephen Stubbs and tenor Aaron Sheehan, the orchestra treated its audience to two of Handel’s “Concerti Grossi” and a rich collection of arias written for tenor James Beard, who performed in Handel’s oratorios from 1734 onward. You can close your eyes as you listen to Pacific MusicWorks and hear a great concert, or, with eyes open, you can see a live performance of music that exceeds any recording in its immediacy and controlled spontaneity. The delighted audience in Nordstrom Recital Hall was all eyes and ears as “Beard’s Beauties” (the “beauties” being beautiful arias) were embodied as

laugh. “I love her so much!” Hynde yelled out at the end, dressed sharply in tight denims, boots, T-shirt and blazer.

“Gypsy” was flawless and featured Nicks twirling in circles on stage in her trademark shawl, much to the sheer excitement and joy of fans, some who brought their own shawls and twirled wherever they found room. Speaking of shawls, Nicks performed the title track of Bella Donna wearing the exact same shawl that appears on the album cover, confessing that she paid $2,000 for it over three decades ago,

but never dared tell her mother how much it cost because her mom was very frugal.

“If you divide thirty-five years into $2,000,” said Nicks, “this was a very good deal.”

“New Orleans,” a love letter to the Louisiana city following Hurricane Katrina, was heartfelt and beautiful, while “Moonlight,” which Nicks wrote after watching the first couple of movies from the Twilight movie series, was performed with the rock icon wearing a gorgeous, ankle-length white fur coat; otherwise she stuck to her usual all-

Some selections were very familiar, such as four pieces from “The Messiah” (1741), while others were either less familiar to a general audience or available only on recordings. For instance, “Alexander’s Feast” (1736) and “Ode for St. Cecelia’s Day” (1739) are wonderful vocal dramas about conflict and music-making – pieces that I listen to regularly – but I’ve never heard a single aria from either work sung live until this concert. Likewise, there was a long sequence of arias included from Samson (1732), a rarely produced oratorio, but the first that Handel wrote for a tenor leading role. I was fortunate to hear it sung

by Jon Vickers when Samson was mounted by the Metropolitan Opera in 1986. It was a moody, abstract production about Samson’s post-Delilah downfall, when he prays for the strength to destroy the pagan temple. Yet these days, apart from an occasional church solo, I haven’t heard any of this great oratorio sung live. Consequently, PMW’s selection of seven of Handel’s richly dramatic tenor pieces from Samson was

more than welcome – it was a reminder of a great genre of music that should be revived more often and more completely.

Aaron Sheehan is familiar to PMW regulars for his terrific performance in Gluck’s Orpheé et Eurydice in 2015. What I then called his “beautiful, ringing vocal tones in the haute-contre tradition” were on full display in this challenging collection of arias. Without overacting in a concert setting, Sheehan’s body language – covering the defiance and recklessness of Alexander the Great to the despair and pathos of Samson – was in perfect visual tune with his passionate, controlled singing. Together with PMW’s orchestral liveliness and precision the music was fairly sculpted in a concert of movement as well as sound. I only wish we could have heard more from each of Handel’s works, since all are narratives that have story lines. What we had were snapshots that only made me long for the complete dramas.

Enough can’t be said for Tekla Cunningham, first violin and Orchestra Director, who conducts with head, eyes, and even eyebrows as she plays. She is a consummate musician whose flowing solos and musical

“Stand Back,” of course, got the entire venue on its feet, played energetically with a colorfully illuminated stage that almost looked like a huge jukebox. It was an extended version that found Nicks again twirling around in a black shawl with gold stars and moons pasted onto it.

There were fans of all ages and backgrounds at the Moda Center, from Gay men who’ve followed Nicks the entire length of her career to young girls who’ve just discovered her from their parents, or possibly even their grandparents. Many women wore gypsy-themed hats to the show, or lacy frilly dresses, and about half the fans were holding transparent bags with merchandise they’d just purchased, from Tshirts to tote bags to wall posters.

“Gold Dust Woman” was mystical and sounded as good as any time it’s ever been performed by Fleetwood Mac over the years. The main set closed out with a lush rendition of “Edge of Seventeen,” as Nicks belted out the number in front of a large black screen with cutouts of flapping white doves, but it later displayed vintage pics of Prince, who she collaborated with on “Stand Back.”

She returned to the stage and performed a pair of classics, “Rhiannon” and “Landslide.” By this time, it appeared Nicks was running late, so she didn’t intro either song with a story and just played them, bowing to the audience at the finale with her full band and backup singers. Another incredible concert by this much beloved legend had come to a close. A bucket list show for many fans, she delivered a performance they’ll surely be talking about in the future.

The Pretenders jammed for about an hour before Nicks went on, doing all of their big hits, including “Back on the Chain Gang,” “I’ll Stand by You,” “Brass in Pocket,” “My City Was Gone” and “Don’t Get Me Wrong.”

“I’m fucking available!” said the dusty tinted and tousled-haired Hynde when an audience member proposed to her. “I don’t see why not.”

The “24 Karat Gold Tour” continues through early April with appearances in Austin, Orlando, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Newark and New York.

gestures are a joy to watch. Stephen Stubbs, with his baroque guitar and lute, added the light texture that shimmered through the music like sparkling crystals. My partner’s favorite player of the evening was Nate Helgeson, whose exciting, dramatic bassoon was matched by his emphatic body language. I was fascinated by Adam Pearl on the harpsichord and organ, whose alert, restrained continuo provided the solid floor supporting the whole enterprise. Seattle audiences are hugely fortunate to have Pacific MusicWorks in town, anchoring an evergrowing community of early music performers and audiences.

Next up from this great organization is their annual collaboration with the UW School of Music and Chamber Singers to perform a baroque opera. This year’s work is Henry Purcell’s marvelous, dramatic English opera, Dido and Aeneas. We’ve seen this work performed at Meany Hall some years ago when Mark Morris brought his great dance version. Now experience it as Purcell’s own audiences might have seen it.

Celebrating 41 Years!

Spectrum Dance Theater’s “Rambunctious” series shines light on “The Immigrants” and ended with all eleven dancers. The men and women dancers wore costumes in the style of traditional Chinese robes.

The second act opened with “Not From Here,” featuring music composed by Iranian-born Gity Razaz, with five dancers wearing skin-colored body suits.

The program closed with “August 1, 1966,” with the music of “String Quartet No. 4,” a piece composed by Russian-born Yevgeniy Sharlat. The work chronicles and reflects on that horrific day in 1966 when Charles Whitman shot 49 people from the University of Texas at Austin clock tower.

The composition “August 1, 1966” was commissioned by Texas Performing Arts to accompany this work by choreographer Donald Byrd. The dance premiered at the University of Texas at Austin last November followed by its Seattle premiere last week.

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer SPECTRUM DANCE THEATER “RAMBUNCTIOUS ITERATION #3: THE IMMIGRANTS” CORNISH PLAYHOUSE March 2-5 Seattle’s prestigious Spectrum Dance Theater lead by nationally-celebrated choreographer Donald Byrd addressed the current topic of “Immigrants” last week in the third iteration of their “Rambunctious” series.

The dances, all choreographed by Donald Byrd, are set to music composed by American classical composers who are Americans but not native born. The production focuses on immigrants coming from Mexico, the Middle East, Cuba and China, places that America has sometimes been at odds with or that are part of the current debate on immigration.

The music and costumes, as well as the movement, tell the story.

The informal evening had Byrd himself introducing the pieces and answering questions from the audience. The music was performed by a string quartet, piano, percussion and even a harmonica and a kazoo.

The first dance was called “While He Was Away” and featured music composed by the Cuban-born Tania Leon. The costumes worn by twelve dancers were bright and colorful and it was refreshing to see some same-sex pairings.

They make a pact. Brown wears her emotions on her sleeve as Annie who is struggling to make her life her own.

Break free: Annie is yearning to break free from her life. Her downtrodden, chain-smoking mother, a spectacular Marlette Buchannan last seen in ArtsWest’s Violet, is full of disappointment and venom. She is a failed writer with a horrible maintenance job at an office with hordes of unused computers and desks with pictures of people with better lives. Their kitchen table conversations are full of despair, anger, and blame. No wonder Annie believes that a baby with all its unwavering love can be her salvation and she knows just where she will find it.

I actually recall this show, whether it was Maury, Montel, or Ricki – I can’t tell you. It’s an interesting jumping point to address many social issues in that community that affect us all. OSCAR TAKEAWAYS continued from cover

stopped the show cold by authoritatively proclaiming Moonlight the Best Picture winner I’m still somewhat shocked by the outcome. Did this really happen? Did the MPAA actually award the Oscar for Best Picture to a $1.5-million indie from a Black writer/director? One revolving around themes of poverty, race, gender and sexual orientation, doing so with a frank sensitivity that puts the viewer square inside the shoes of its protagonist in ways few other films seldom have before?

Yes. It really happened, and in giving Barry Jenkins’ feature Best Picture, the MPAA made a statement unlike any they ever have before. Whether one loves, likes or loathes Moonlight, there’s no getting around the fact there’s never been another feature like it to win Best Picture. Not at its budget level. Certainly not in the way it puts its LGBT themes front and center. And while other films featuring a primarily African American cast have won Best Picture (most notably Steven McQueen’s slavery drama 12 Years a Slave), none of those put forward a cast list not containing a single Caucasian member whatsoever.

It’s unheard of. After two years of #OscarSoWhite being a thing, after countless discussions pointing out MPAA membership is primarily White, Male and over the age of 65, the thought Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs could see her diversity initiatives produce such astonishing results so quickly is rather shocking. Moonlight

is not the type of movie that would normally appeal to members while Damien Chazelle’s lovely Hollywood musical La La Land unquestionably is, so forgive me if I’m still amazed the supposed frontrunner lost and the supposedly not-ready-forprimetime underdog ended up emerging victorious.

Make no mistake. Moonlight winning is a big fricking deal. Those that try to say otherwise do not understand the Academy Awards, its history and what a movie like this taking home Best Picture means to marginalized communities, not just here in the United States, but also around the world.

In addition, here are five other random thoughts that have occurred to me since the 89th annual Academy Awards came to such an explosively unexpected conclusion: 1. Thanks to the unbelievably insane screw up by the PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants that resulted in Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announcing the wrong Best Picture winner, neither Moonlight nor La La Land filmmakers were able to bask in the glow of any of their respective Oscar wins. The La La Land people found themselves up on the stage, delivering acceptance speeches only to be suddenly told they had to hand over their prize to someone else and to go back down into the auditorium and return to their respective seats. The Moonlight people were equally ill-treated, the show ending amidst a flurry of chaos and explanations, meaning no one who had a part in the movie’s creation really got their moment to make an acceptance speech and say what they’d been dreaming of shouting to the world. It was an unfor-

givable mistake, and while the chances of something like it ever happening again are miniscule, it’s still on the Academy to make sure it doesn’t.

2. Brie Larson really didn’t want to give that Oscar for Best Actor to Casey Affleck for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, and more or less admitted as much to Vanity Fair by pointedly stating that her actions on the stage spoke for themselves.

A committed victim’s rights activist, she made a point of shaking all the hands and giving hugs to all the college sexual assault survivors appearing on-stage with Lady Gaga during the 2016 Oscar ceremony, but the Room Best Actress winner wanted nothing to do with Affleck, refusing to applaud his victory. Say what you will about Affleck winning, about whether or not the sexual assault and harassment allegations against him levied by two female employees working on his experimental Joaquin Phoenix mockumentary I’m Still Here should matter as far as voting for him for Best Actor was concerned, Larson still stood up for her principles, not bowing to expected niceties or industry conventions when she was forced to hand him the Oscar.

I can’t help but respect that.

3. Who didn’t love watching Hollywood veteran Kevin O’Connell, after 20 prior nominations and zero wins, finally walk home with an Oscar for Sound Mixing in regards to his spectacular work on Mel Gibson’s WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge? It was a beautiful moment, one where it was never a guarantee that it could actually happen, the pure unadulterated joy bursting off of O’Connell face, as well the rapturous standing ovation he received from this

crowd in the auditorium, sublimely speaking for itself.

4. I know they add time to a telecast that is already much too long, but the Honorary Academy Award winners deserve at least the opportunity to make a short speech.

This year’s class included four legendary luminaries, editor Anne V. Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster, filmmaker Frederick Wiseman and Hong Kong icon Jackie Chan. Seriously. Jackie Chan, who has barely sniffed the Oscar stage in his stunning, spectacular career, had to stand in the balcony and wave. That was it. Nothing more.

Listen, I get why this change was made to honor these folks at a separate event, but there are times when some of them deserve additional attention. This was one of those moments, and at the very least both Chan and Coates deserved more than a smattering of polite applause.

5. Finally, even with all the calamity at the end, even for the utter failure of the tour bus gag, I honestly can’t believe I’m saying this, but host Jimmy Kimmel needs to be asked back. I’ve never been a fan but, other than those two snafus, one of which was decidedly not his fault, the late night talk show host and comedian did a rather spectacular job. He was funny, moved the show along, didn’t play nice yet also was seldom overly mean. He called a lot of what was happening as he saw it and remained affable and charismatic throughout. Kimmel did a great job, and I’d be more than open to seeing if this was a fluke performance or, much like Johnny Carson or Billy Crystal, if he has the ability to do this on a regular basis.

It was a wonderful ten minutes, a joyous unexpected gift that came out of the blue like an early summer Christmas present delivered to me by the good folks running that year’s Seattle International Film Festival. On growing up in small town Washington State and imagining he’d ever have a career like this one: “Of course, not, no, but there are certain things that I got to do because of my passion for film, like going to Los Angeles and getting the chance to associate with these people like Lucille Ball right off the bat. I remember one time being at Lucy’s house and she was showing Funny Face. It was not a new film then, but Kate Thompson was there and – it was the strangest group, actually – Joseph Cotton,

honesty, as short as our chat was, this little interview is one of the most cherished moments I’ve ever had as a professional film critic, sitting there with Osborne reminding me just how much I love this job as well as how amazingly lucky I am that I have the opportunity to do it.

So, unsurprisingly, it admittedly hit me like a ton of bricks this morning [March 6] when I read of the legendary TCM host’s passing at the age of 84. I honestly loved this man, and even though I only met him twice, first in 2009 and the second time while he was doing a press tour with Eva Marie Saint a couple of years later, Osborne had this miraculous ability to make me feel like I was the most important person in the room and that he was just as pleased to be chatting with me as I was with him.

The following is a reprint of a column I wrote for my 2009 SIFF blog which was associated with my Moviefreak.com website (posted May 22, 2009) documenting my conversation with Osborne during the 2009 Seattle International Film Festival. It’s very short, but I think his remarks showcase that gracious warmth, enchanting intelligence and spellbinding cinematic knowledge that helped make him such an icon. Make no mistake, Osborne was an industry titan and one of the last of his ilk, and to say he will be missed is as massive an understate-

No one who loves and cherishes the art of film could refuse the opportunity, no matter how brief, to sit and chat with Osborne. Considered the official biographer of Oscar, this University of Washington alum and former Colfax, WA native (roughly 60 miles from Spokane, my hometown) is a titan as far as I’m concerned, sitting with him a ten-minute cinema class no college or university could ever hope to equal.

If I sound a bit like a gushing schoolgirl I guess I am. TCM has supplied me more hours of enjoyment and edification than I can even begin to relate, Osborne leading me to films I’d probably never have watched had he not spoken so highly of them. Every time I hear his voice I can’t help but feel safe and comforted, secure in the knowledge that, for right now at least, someone out there has a passion and a love for the medium that maybe surpasses my own.

But enough of this. While our window was brief, Osborne had plenty of interesting things to say, and instead of dolling it out piecemeal I’m just going to let his words speak for themselves.

On the strengths of Turner Classic Movies: “We just got a Peabody Award calling [TCM] the ‘American Cinematheque,’ and I love that. One thing I love

Ladies Meet with Myrna Loy. Not a lot of people are going to want to see it or like to see it, but if they’re people like you, people who want to learn about the history of film, seeing these old pictures the way they were meant to be seen, you’ll get your chance, and I think that’s great. I’m very proud of that fact.”

On trying to watch films with commercial interruptions: “I love that we show our films without interruptions. Films aren’t supposed to be cut, not for any reason.”

“You know what’s always confused me, when television first began? TV needed film more than film needed television. I don’t know why that they just didn’t then have a law or write into the contracts saying, we’ll sell the films, but they have to be shown uncut. That would have made it start right at the very beginning that when films were shown there would be commercials at the beginning and at the end, but not in the middle. If they had done that they would probably still being [broadcasting] them in that fashion today. They should have forced it to happen, and I don’t know why they weren’t adamant about that because [commercials] really destroy their films. You take a Hitchcock movie like Rear Window or Rebecca or Psycho and you put commercials in there, that whole movie is lost.”

You went into the living room and she pushes a button and the painting goes up, she pushes another button and the screen comes down, picks up the phone and tells the projector he could start the film, the film rolls and we’re suddenly watching Funny Face.”

“So, the movie is going on and that number between Kate Thompson and Audrey Hepurn on, ‘how to be lovely,’ comes on, and Kate stands up and actually starts doing the number. I’m sitting there thinking, this is where I’m supposed to be. This is what I’m supposed to be doing.”

“I have to say that, by desire I programmed myself so much that I would be doing this that now it doesn’t come as that big of a surprise to me. Now, I know that is stupid. This is fantasy come true. But I was so strong about that fantasy that it hasn’t come as a surprise that it has happened.

What I can never stop thinking is how lucky I am that I’m the one who got to do it.”

Charming Before I Fall a teen Groundhog Day

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BEFORE I FALL Now playing For Pacific Northwest teenager Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch), February 12 started as any other regular day. She banters with her mother (Jennifer Beals), is oblivious to her little sister Izzy’s (Erica Tremblay) cheerful pleas to be noticed and heads off to school sitting next to best girlfriend Lindsay (Halston Sage). She collects roses from admirers throughout a preValentine’s Day school celebration, enjoys lunch surrounded by her friends and heads out that evening to a party being hosted by Kent (Logan Miller), a longtime acquaintance who has a major crush on her.

All is going fine until outcast Juliet (Elena Kampouris) shows up at the party.

Not only is she in some sort of angry funk, she’s also chosen that moment to tell Samantha, Lindsay and their fellow besties Elody (Medalion Rahimi) and Ally (Cynthy Wu) exactly what she thinks of all four of them.

Leaving in an angry huff, the foursome take off into the night. But just as they’re all calming down, Lindsay’s car is involved in a horrible accident, Samantha sent spiraling into an unconsciousness wondering if she or her friends are going to survive, only to awake in the morning to discover it is once again February 12, and she must start the entire day over from the very beginning.

Based on the best-selling novel by Lauren Oliver, calling Before I Fall a teen-friendly melding of Mean Girls and Groundhog Day is a fairly obvious and unsurprising thing to do. It would also be accurate. The story of a youngster forced to live the same day over and over and over again until she passes some mysterious test, rights an unknown wrong or just learns to be a better person, there’s not much going

on here that could be construed as unexpected. This is a fairly rudimentary scenario, screenwriter Maria Maggenti (Monte Carlo) keeping things simple and straightforward, while director Ry Russo-Young (Nobody Walks) doesn’t add any additional embellishments on her part. No, this is a plain, focused and decidedly unfussy adaptation, and as such is over and done with so quickly the conscientious brevity of it all is a wee bit unsettling.

Yet, as familiar and relatively nondescript as all of this might be, Russo-Young and Maggenti still manage to do just enough with it all to keep things interesting.

There is a youthful energy to the proceedings that’s invigorating, a dynamic charm that makes all the tedious, overly melodramatic bits sing with melodious enthusiasm that by all accounts shouldn’t exist. More, it does a fairly terrific job examining teenage

friendship amongst young women in a way few stories take the time to do, and while the truths it reveals are hardly innovative, the fact the filmmakers are attacking them at all with such honest candor is refreshing in and of itself.

But the real reason the movie ends up being as enjoyable as it is has more to do with Deutch’s infectious star-turn more than it does anything else. After stealing hearts and opening eyes as pretty much the lone female presence in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! (and after being labeled an Ellen Page clone for her performance in Vampire Academy and being wasted entirely in the James Franco/Bryan Cranston gross-out comedy Why Him?), the young actress delivers a statement performance signifying she’s a major talent worthy of keeping an eye on. The emotional complexity of her work is simply stellar,

Scattershot Kong a loopy monster mash

It is 1973, and the Vietnam War is coming to an end. The secret government agency known as Monarch is on its last legs, but head honcho Bill Randa (John Goodman) believes now is the time to convince the Senators in charge of his funding to give him one more opportunity to prove his wild theories. He and his chief geologist Houston Brooks (Corey Hawkins) have discovered a seemingly lost landmass in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a location given the mysterious moniker of Skull Island because everyone who has ever gone in search of it was never heard from again.

Randa believes he can prove his suspicions about ancient creatures and lost civilizations by going there, he only needs a little extra money and a military escort to help him do it.

Incredibly, he’s given the go-ahead to move ahead with his plan. Assigned a battle-hardened chopper unit led by the demanding Lt. Colonel Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson), hiring former S.A.S. operative and crack jungle tracker James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) to be his guide, Randa believes his elite team to explore the island is now set. He even acquires the services of award-winning war photographer Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) to document the journey, all of them ready to leap into the unknown for their own personal reasons, each searching for answers they hope to find while investigating this strange, new world.

erts’ Kong: Skull Island, a visually phantasmagoric action-fantasy-comedy hybrid that plays out as something of an unhinged, shaggy-eared prequel to Gareth Edwards’ excellent 2014 reinterpretation of Toho Studio’s legendary Godzilla. Having very little if anything to do with either Merian C. Cooper’s 1933 classic King Kong or its lavish, richly ambitious 2005 Peter Jackson remake, this movie presents the giant ape in a heroically selfless light, portraying him as a protector of the natural order those with any sense don’t go out of their way to foolishly mess around with.

The thing about this new take, however, is that, structurally and tonally, the film is a scattershot affair that never quite knows what it is doing. The script by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), Max Borenstein (Godzilla) and Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) is a crazy hodgepodge of ideas and concepts that are continually at war with one anoth-

er. At one moment the film is a broad comedy; at other points it is deathly serious.

There are times where it becomes a giddy giant monster frolic in the vein of the Toho Godzilla epics made over the past six-plus decades; at other times it feels like an idiotic offshoot of that ghastly Roland Emmerich remake released in 1998. It’s a loopy, carnage-fueled extravaganza that makes obvious allusions to everything from Apocalypse Now to Jurassic Park, Platoon to Dr. Strangelove, and does so without any potential clue as to why it is or what the point of doing so might actually be.

Vogt-Roberts, coming off his microbudget teen comedy The Kings of Summer, proves to have better visual chops than anticipated, the helicopter troop’s initial confrontation with Kong positively glorious.

Equal parts suspenseful and terrifying, this action-filled set piece moves like lightning, each crash landing and explosion a brutish

and the way she travels through so many varying dramatic layers as she traverses through the narrative is even more so. Deutch is, in a word, incredible, and even when the movie comes perilously close to flying off the rails she continually keeps things watchable practically all by herself.

Good thing, too, because there are a number of points here where, were she not so talented, were the actress’ performance not so superlative, I might have given up on the film and let my mind wander someplace else. There is a layer of superficiality to some of the sequences that is fairly annoying, while some of the montages depicting Samantha’s daily travails aren’t nearly as inspired or as interesting as I felt they needed to be. There is a subplot involving what appears to be the high school’s lone lesbian student that barely registers as anything more than sophomoric pandering, while some revelations involving Lindsay and Juliet as children aren’t nearly as edifying or resonate as the filmmakers clearly want them to be. There’s also some mixed messaging involved as to what the point of all this magical realism is supposed to be, and I wasn’t entirely certain what it was I was supposed to be feeling as I left the theatre and pondered where Samantha’s story ended up at.

Even so, Deutch is a revelation, and there were more than enough strong, emotionally authentic moments to dilute the misery caused by some of the film’s more egregious missteps. Before I Fall doesn’t always rise to the occasion. When it does, though, the end result is something wonderful, and I enjoyed far more of this dayin-the-life stuck on repeat than I imagined I was going to before I was tasked with watching it. I liked this movie, enough so I’d watch it again willingly, and considering I’m no longer the target audience that’s probably the highest bit of praise I can throw in its direction.

While he doesn’t possess the precision or cinematic virtuosity that Edwards displayed with his Godzilla and perfected with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Vogt-Roberts’s pugilistic elasticity where it comes to the signature monster attacks is still nothing to be scoffed at.

It’s just all so dumb, and there are multiple points where it feels like each member of the cast is existing in an entirely different motion picture. Jackson, a nod to his doomed Jurassic Park character aside, is all steely-eyed intensity as he battles demons born on Vietnam battlefields. John C. Reilly, portraying a WWII fighter pilot stranded on the island for almost three decades, is all manically cartoonish, wildeyed buffoonery, his performance a hysteric bit of genius that needs to be seen to be believed. As for members like Hiddleston and Larson, they’re in steely adventure serial hero mode in the vein of Indiana Jones or an old school 1930s Hollywood serial, going for the gung-ho and the derring-do if precious little else, letting their mutual natural charisma speak for itself.

I’m not sure how this sets up the so-called “MonsterVerse” Warner Bros. is attempting to create, and while there are plenty of hints towards future installments featuring Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah and, of course, the big behemoth Gojira himself, the tonal disparity between Godzilla and this feature are undeniably obvious. But as ludicrous and as unfocused as it all might be, Kong: Skull Island kept me amused for practically every second of its two-hour running time. While not a great movie, it’s still an awfully fun one, and as big budget, visually resplendent monster mashes go I’m somewhat eager to give it another look relatively soon.

Celebrating 41 Years!

Biting Get Out a satirical marvel of terrifying wit

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer GET OUT Now playing Photographer Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) is apprehensive about meeting the parents of his Caucasian girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams). They don’t know he’s Black, and while both Dean (Bradley Whitford) and Missy (Catherine Keener) are by all accounts open-minded liberals who should be just fine with their daughter entering into an interracial relationship, that doesn’t mean it still won’t be a shock when he arrives arm-in-arm with her standing at their front door. Chris just doesn’t feel this is information that should be sprung on someone out of the blue, and as such he’s understandably on edge even as Rose lovingly urges him to try and relax.

Unfortunately, it’s as weird and uncomfortable as he feared it would. Yes, Dean and Missy on the surface are decent hosts, but underneath the surface they and many other members of their small, affluent suburban community practice a form of unintentional racism that they don’t come close to recognizing. But, beyond that, there’s more going on, something positively horrific, and Chris is starting to get hints that he and Rose need to leave as soon as possible.

There’s an underlying darkness to all this apparent kindness and sensitivity, a force so bleak and all-consuming it could literally transform someone into an entirely different person altogether.

From the mind of sketch comedy impresario Jordan Peele (“Key and Peele”), the sinister, satirically unsettling horror-comedy Get Out features one of the best, most culturally savvy scripts of any film likely to be released in all of 2017. This movie goes for the jugular, offering up ideas and concepts that are particularly timely, the way it manages to look backwards and forwards with equal ferocity unquestionably startling. It’s a self-aware meta exercise in paranoia and understanding that analyzes race in ways few other pieces of Hollywood entertainment ever has, Peele utilizing the artifices and devices of the horror genre in ways bordering on genius.

For those going in expecting an allout scare-fest, be prepared as this is not that kind of motion picture. The horror elements, while solid, are admittedly also

where Peele comes up a little bit short.

Once we know what is going on, once the central conceit revolving around self-determination, corruption, subservience and psychological reconfiguration is revealed, there aren’t a lot of surprises or shocks.

While the climactic rampage where Chris learns all and is forced to do what he can to make it through intact is nicely staged and acted, there’s also not much that happens that is unexpected, and as such the blood didn’t curdle nearly as much as I honestly would have liked it to.

Thankfully, the horror aspects run secondary to the core plot threads, the hardcharging social commentary, the hysterical comedy and the insightful satire. Peele builds characters who are fascinating to deconstruct, each one working towards their own agenda, and while Chris is the fly trapped in a web he barely comprehends let alone realizes that it exists, it is the spiders crowding around him who serve up the proverbial banquet. They work in tandem, even if not always as a unit, their mutual desire for corruption, sacrifice, perversion and possession a sight to see.

As such, the entire cast Peele has assembled to make all of this come to life is excellent across the board. Not just veteran pros

Keener and Whitford (who, with this and Cabin in the Woods, seem to have a whole new career appearing in modern horrorcomedies that aren’t quite what they appear to be on the surface), and not just core stars Kaluuya and Williams, but just about everyone else having any sort of speaking role whatsoever as well. Stephen Root as a blind art gallery owner with a fondness for Chris’ pictures. Lakeith Stanfield as garden party attendee whose robotic grin conceals an unimaginable inner turmoil. Marcus Henderson and especially Betty Gabriel as the Armitage family’s servants, both going through their respective duties with a ghostly precision that’s as creepy as it is intriguing. Best of all is Lil Rel Howery as Chris’ best friend and confidant Rod Williams, the wisecracking TSA agent putting two plus two together and becoming all but certain his good buddy has ended up somewhere he most definitely did not want to be.

Can’t say I was as fond of Caleb Landry Jones as Rose’s menacing brother Jeremy, his performance so on-the-nose he might as well have a neon arrow pointed his direction proclaiming him as someone dangerous to keep an eye on. I’ll also admit, as sensational as practically all of the comedic beats prove to be, and as shockingly organic

to the story at hand they astonishingly are, there is one extended gag involving Rod making a report to a bunch of incredulous police officers that feels like a skit pulled from “Key and Peele.” It stands out in a way that took me out of the movie, and as funny as the sequence is it is also the only one that just didn’t fit with any of the other bits that surrounded it.

Peele directs with a confidence, however, he and cinematographer Toby Oliver (The Darkness) doing a marvelous job of manufacturing a visual ambiance that’s absolutely sensational. He also keeps the pacing sharp and focused for the majority of the film’s running time, crafting a sense of omnipresent dread that continuously sent shudders up and down my spine. But it’s the script that still has me the most excited about Get Out, Peele’s ability to entertain and to edify, to produce laughter in the same instance that he slams his satirical points home with an unexpected sledgehammer, it’s all here and more. This film is a marvel of ingenuity and inspiration, a horror tale where the most frightening image is the mirror image of the audience realizing they’re the ones being so intimately examined.
