The Seattle Film Critics Society (SFCS) announced the winners in 19 categories for the 2017 Seattle Film Critics Society Awards on Monday, December 18.

Celebrating 43 Years!

Lady GaGa announces two-year residency in Las Vegas

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Can’t get enough of Lady GaGa? Starting in about a year from now, you could see her as many times as you’d like in Las Vegas. Mama Monster will begin a twoyear special engagement at The Park Theater in Sin City, a new 5,300-seat venue across the street from the relatively new T-Mobile Arena. “It has been a life-long dream of mine to play Las Vegas,” said Lady GaGa in a press release. “I am humbled to be a part of a historical line-up of performers, and to have the honor of creating a new show unlike anything Vegas has ever seen before.” Performances aren’t expected to begin until December 2018, but preparations are underway with ticket sales coming very soon. The Park Theater is under management of the very LGBTfriendly MGM Resorts International brand of hotels and entertainment facilities.

Upcoming new Seattle shows to announce this week include Gogol Bordello on February 20 at The Neptune, Brett Dennen on March 20 at The Neptune, Herb Alpert with Lani Hall on March 28-31 at The Triple Door, Beth Ditto on March 29 at The Showbox Market and Natalia Lafourcade on June 2 at The Neptune.

Although there are only two music categories presented at the Academy Awards, both have become extremely competitive in recent years with marquee name artists and top international composers hoping to win either. For the 2018 Oscars, a whopping 141 musical scores are eligible and 70 entries have been narrowed down from a longer list to compete for Best Original Song.

For Best Original Score, the frontrunners are Hans Zimmer for Dunkirk, Alexandre Desplat for The Shape of Water, Dario Marianelli for Darkest Hour, Michael Giacchino for either Coco or War for the Planet of the Apes and John Williams for either Star Wars: The Last Jedi or The Post. But clipping at their heels are Carter Burwell for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch for Bladerunner 2049, Phillip Glass for Jane and Radiohead band member Jonny Greenwood for his seventh film project, composing the music for the period piece Phantom Thread; it would be his first nomination. The scores for Call Me By Your Name and I, Tonya were ruled ineligible by AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) because each lacked the required amount of original music on the album.

For Best Original Song, the only sure bet for a nomination is “This Is Me,” the soaring and inspirational hit from The Greatest Showman. Indie singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens has two shots at making the final cut with double entries from Call Me

By Your Name, “Mystery Of Love” and “Visions Of Gideon.” Sia, who should’ve landed a nod last year for penning “Never Give Up” for the movie Lion, will appear on the ballot again with “To Be Human” from the action flick Wonder Woman.

Mariah Carey is in the running for one of the five spots with the track “The Star” from the animated film by the same title.

Taylor Swift, no stranger to writing music for films – her credits include songs for Valentine’s Day and The Hunger Games – is a contender with “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” from Fifty Shades Darker, while Nick Jonas is looking for a first time nomination with “Home” from the animated motion picture Ferdinand. Mary J. Blige, a shoo-in for a Best Supporting Actress nod, could also net a song nomination for the title theme of her movie Mudbound, while

the late Chris Cornell is in the mix as well with “The Promise” from the film of the same name and Sara Bareilles is a hopeful with “If I Dare” from Battle of the Sexes.

Nominations for the Academy Awards are set for a January 23 announcement.

Congratulations to the 2018 class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, announced after two rounds of voting. Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues and Nina Simone have been selected for induction into the elite music club next year, joining a list of all-time greats from The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder to Elton John and Nirvana. The 33rd Annual Induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 14 at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame foundation and museum. The event will once again be televised on HBO. Speaking of HBO, the cable channel will premiere a new documentary on David Bowie next month. David Bowie: The Last Five Years examines the rock icon’s late-career accomplishments prior to his death in early 2016, which includes two groundbreaking albums – 2013’s The Next Day and the Grammy-winning Blackstar from a year ago – and his musical Lazarus, inspired by his role in the 1976 cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth. David Bowie: The Last Five Years, a follow-up to the 2013 documentary David Bowie: Five Years directed by Francis Whately, who also helmed the new film, includes interviews with Bowie’s closest creative collaborators, such as Bowie’s longtime producer Tony Visconti, graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook, Lazarus producer Robert Fox and Johan Renck, who directed Bowie’s final music video for the single “Lazarus,” widely discussed as foreshadowing the legendary performer’s death. The documentary will premiere January 8 on HBO. Finally, Kendrick Lamar has been chosen to perform during the halftime show of the College Football Playoffs Championship on January 8, in Atlanta. This is the inaugural year of a halftime concert for this event, which pits the top two college football teams in the country, who will meet for the decisive game after beating two other teams in the national semi-finals.

continued from cover with tremendous style and perfection by the Pacific Northwest Ballet – a world-class company dancing world-class choreography in a world-class production.

But we’re also lucky to have another Nutcracker in town – the version that the Cornish Preparatory Dance Company presents annually using a cast of children performing the choreography of their teachers from the Cornish College of the Arts Preparatory Dance program. There are some volunteer adults and a professional Cavalier to round out the cast – but the children and young adults from Cornish carry 90% of this enchanting program.

You might think a school production would be a recital, or that it would offer simple highlights of the ballet; that it would interest only enthusiastic parents and adoring relatives. I thought the same when I attended opening night to see my dance buddy (the seven-year-old) make her debut as a mouse. I expected to be charmed – you’d have to be Ebenezer Scrooge not to love kids in costumes doing their best for Mom and Dad. But I was completely surprised to be as entertained and intrigued as I was, not only by 130 adorable kids and beautiful young dancers in gorgeous costumes, but by the cleverness of the production.

The Cornish Nutcracker has choreography that manages many levels of development and talent, as well as narrative subtleties that make E.T.A. Hoffman’s edgy tale a touch less creepy and a bit more optimistic. It also demonstrates an impressive level of professionalism on the part of every age of student – from the tiniest dancer who jumps out of a dollhouse to the pre-college ballerinas in leading roles. The first night I attended I was amazed and charmed all at once. By the second night I was recovered from my astonishment and could look more closely at how the faculty and directors at Cornish worked with their students to produce a beguiling version of this beloved ballet.

In the Cornish interpretation, for instance, Drosselmeyer is a not the mysterious and intimidating guest who comes with

his robotic wind-up dolls and his strange nutcracker – a weird and somewhat ugly gift for a little girl, when you think about it.

Instead, he’s a cheerful guy in a corny cape who performs magic tricks, like your favorite uncle. Yes, there are dancing dolls, and a little troop of marching soldiers, but this Drosselmeyer, as played by Leonard Su, has a trustworthy air, as though the nutcracker is a good joke, and Clara, played by the lovely Kohana Whitney, is always in good hands, even when the Mouse Queen (yes, a queen – she even has long eyelashes) confronts the Nutcracker under a giant Christmas tree.

We ballet lovers are so accustomed to seeing dancers at the peak of their development that we don’t often get to see how those prima ballerinas and cavaliers progress through training. In the Cornish Nutcracker the whole arc of progress is laid before the viewer. In Act I, for instance, faculty choreographer Vanesa Wylie formed a group of non-professional adults, pre-primary students, and demi-pointe dancers from eight to fifteen years old into a party scene so lively and accessible that the audience could have

joined in. Wylie used folk dance – circles, reels, do-se-dos – to conjure up a joyful community of friends and neighbors that looked spontaneous and natural. When Drosselmeyer opens a box to release his dancing dolls, four toy soldiers shuffle out with their heads down, form a line, and then march in place to the music, turning and saluting in sync. Though the steps were basic, the effect was pleasing because unison movement is so satisfying to the eye. Later, in the battle scene, a gaggle of little girls in shiny gray mouse-pajamas and mouse-hats race around in organized chaos, rolling, jumping, doing angel stands, and dragging each other on and off the stage. At the same time, high-stepping soldiers in march formation herd them back and forth and into the wings. Wylie fashioned a vocabulary of movement for the mice that absorbed missteps while creating a highly effective hurly-burly that contrasted dramatically with the military patterns of the older students playing soldiers.

In the Second Act, when Clara is escorted to the Magic Kingdom by Drosselmeyer (not the prince – no subtextual romance here) she meets the charming inhabitants who will entertain her – Spanish, Arabian, Russian, and Chinese dancers, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and dancing Mirlitons (a mirliton is either a flute or a pastry – Cornish has dancers playing flutes; PNB has them as marzipan in cupcake tutus). Act II is where we see what the senior dancers can do, and how the faculty choreographers integrate demi-point dancers with the soloists who display various levels of the pointe work that dominates professional companies.

One of the most impressive examples, in an act with many wonderful dances, was the Waltz of the Flowers, in which demi-point flowers in swirling skirts enter and leave in pirouetting couples and trios while the lead flower (Grace Tong on opening night, Grace Thompson on the 16th, both aptly named) dances her variations on pointe. Both dancers were able to exhibit strength, agility and, yes, grace.

Faculty choreographer Leigh-Ann CohenHafford deftly allowed dancers to sail into the wings and back again, creating a sense of amplitude while giving them time to regroup for the next section. In this dance and in the Dance of the Snowflakes, also choreographed by Cohen-Hafford, the dances ended in beautiful tableaux. The flowers’ upward-bending arms at the end of their waltz were particularly lovely, like petals floating in the air.

Heid Gans, faculty choreographer for the Arabian dance, fashioned what was, for me, a far more pleasing dance than those I’ve seen to the same music in professional companies. Rather than the solo tour de force of the Balanchine version, that causes the soloist to show every sinew while executing unlovely “oriental” moves, this soloist is accompanied by six dancers in red chiffon tunics whose movements sug-

gest flickering fire, while the central dancer describes wide circles around the center ending in strong, angular poses. On opening night the lead dancer was Laila Rosen, who performed her circular dance with a perfect profile and still shoulders, creating such drama that she reminded me of silent film stars like Theda Bara or Gloria Swanson. Rachel Su, on the 16th, danced with such confidence it was as if she were actually an Arabian (of the Nutcracker variety).

There were so many other delightful and inventive moments in this production that I wish I could mention them all – but the famous Mother Ginger dance, in which children dash out from under Mother Ginger’s enormous skirt, is one of the highlights of the ballet. In the Cornish iteration, Mother Ginger is a chef whose skirt is a white table with a red-checkered tablecloth, played with animated humor by Savanna Milton. Faculty choreographer Christine Juarez has four little chefs tumble out from beneath her skirt/table and dash around helping to bake a cake. Once again the audience is treated to a demonstration of how very young dancers can follow music, execute steps, and develop the discipline to make a fairly complex dance a success.

Watching the Cornish Nutcracker was like watching two things at once: a wonderfully traditional, yet reimagined version of Nutcracker, and the progression of dance development from the age of five to eighteen.

At the intermission Program Director and faculty choreographer Steve Casteel invited graduating seniors to tell the audience what they planned to do after graduation. All are going to college, one is accepted at Yale, one is attending NYU’s Tisch School of Dance and another is going to the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. While I doubt that all those little girls in mouse costumes will persist in ballet training until they’re dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy or the Arabian lead, clearly the journey from mouse to soldier to demi-pointe flower to Sugar Plum Fairy is a process of building strength and coordination, developing an ear for music, following instructions, learning discipline, and experiencing the value of practice and persistence.

That so many young people could, with their teachers, pull off a professional, fully realized version of a full-length ballet is an awe-inspiring feat. For those of us who love dance and like to think about how dancers develop, no greater example is available in Seattle than the Cornish Nutcracker, which has far more delights than I can report here.

Though the performances for 2017 are now over, make a note to yourself to find out when Cornish is doing their Nutcracker in early December 2018 and come see this terrific production next year. You’ll love it, and you’ll learn a lot about how children learn a difficult art, and how choreographers use their students’ limitations and gifts to create clever, inventive ballet.

Out NPR co-host Ari Shapiro returned to his native Portland last month for his internationalthemed one-man show, "Homeward"

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer ARI SHAPIRO “HOMEWARD” WORLD TRADE CENTER AUDITORIUM PORTLAND, OR November 15-18 I first heard of Ari Shapiro two years ago. I knew he was someone from my hometown of Beaverton, OR and was a nationally known journalist working for NPR (National Public Radio) who’d become a co-host of the famed “All Things Considered” program. We listen to him daily, here at the SGN offices.

I personally met Shapiro, 39, last fall at the Association of LGBTQ Journalists Convention in Philadelphia. About a month later I was thrilled to learn he would be in Portland to perform his one-man show, “Homeward,” which he presented at the

World Trade Auditorium in Portland last month. (On other occasions when he’s in Portland he performs with the Portlandbased band, Pink Martini.)

For his show Shapiro wore a dark suit and shared compelling stories of the people he had met during his travels and sang songs related to those stories in multiple languages including French, Kurdish, Arabic, Scots Gaelic, Ukranian and English. For his stories related to Syrian refugees he sang “Ay Shengal” in Kurdish and “Belsharea” in Arabic and for his experience in Scotland covering their 2014 Referendum on Scotland becoming independent from the United Kingdom he sang “Flower of Scotland” in Scots Gaelic.

Other songs on the program included “Fils de” sung in French and “Plyve Kacha” sung in Ukrainian.

Because he was in Portland Pink Martini band members Storm Large and China Forbes came to the show and each joined him on alternating nights for one song.

The night I was there Forbes joined him on stage for the duet and, coming up from her seat in the audience, together they sang “Boys in the Back Room/When the Saints.”

After all the seriousness, Shapiro started to show off his fun side with the Nina Simone version of the Beatles classic, “Here Comes the Sun.” For the encore, Shapiro told the story of how his husband of 12 years, Michael, suggested that he needed to end the show with something upbeat like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and as he was looking back at the show he realized that the song did fit into the show after all.

Shapiro then remarked, “Always listen to your husband.”

After the show, Shapiro answered questions on note cards from the audience. With a full house, Shapiro was indeed welcomed “Home.”

What could happen if Trump were president…?

Oh, yeah, he is.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer BUILDING THE WALL AZEOTROPE (AT 12TH AVENUE ARTS) Through December 23 Robert Schenkkan’s blistering play, Building the Wall, is not a play of nuance.

He wrote it in an apparent white-hot fury on the eve of the 2016 election and it’s been refined, slightly, since Trump won, to account for more real-time events. Since most of Schenkkan’s career writing is of real events and conversations that propel events rather than “dramatic” scenes, he has become a master at building energy in conversation.

This 75-minute play presents Rick in prison. Rick (Tim Gouran) has done something awful and Gloria (Shermona Mitchell), a professor of history (it seems), wants to understand how he got to this point.

Her letter to Rick asking to interview him appealed to him, he says, because of its honesty, and so he allows her to visit.

There are two key pieces of information about this futuristic play that might help you understand the story as it unfolds: There has been a terrorist attack in New York City (this is not a real event but it propels the action of this hypothetical play) and because of the attack, President Trump subsequently declared “martial law.”

Rick was an administrator of a private corporation’s immigration detention center. As Gloria asks about how he got that job and subsequent events, he explains how, after immigrants began being rounded up at terrifyingly speedy rates and were shoved into these centers to be repatriated in their countries of origin, they began to crowd and overrun the facilities.

Rick details how that meant that medical services ran thin, sanitation could not be kept up with and convicted criminals were mixed

sports stadium to house people, which created terrible anxiety for those from South American countries where stadiums had been used to house detainees and people disappeared from them.

The breakdown of the system is very clear. The deterioration of support for a man in charge of one facility is shown to create an emergency management situation that never regains any kind of regular order.

in with regular families (including elderly and children). He describes a systemic breakdown of norms. Normally, personal belongings were taken and cataloged at entry to the facility. Normally, convicts were separated from immigrants who had “just” violated immigration law and nothing else. Normally, enough people got repatriated to keep up with the numbers newly arrived.

Later, restricting personal property got to be too time-consuming and contraband was available for people to bribe and buy medicine, and later, if not with possessions, then people were able to – or forced to – use sexual favors to survive. New temporary facilities were needed, and Rick chose a

His message is very clear. He is essentially describing people who could be Rick in World War II. He demonstrates, in this play, how reasonable people can be drawn into making unreasonable decisions.

Schenkkan also uses current events to indict those at the top who make the real policy decisions that create pressure downward for those who have to implement them. A reference to Abu Graib details who paid the price and who did not – no one in G.W. Bush’s administration ever was held responsible.

Schenkkan also works to help decipher Trump supporters. Rick is not a die-hard

supporter, but certainly likes what Trump said about immigration and working folks.

Gouran portrays a reasonable regular guy who isn’t that political, but supports the ideas that helped get Trump elected.

Gouran’s own compassion and honorability make the character understandable and sympathetic.

Mitchell has a difficult role. She presents herself beautifully at the start as an academic who really wants to understand the story. She has to tease out the information for us to understand what Schenkkan wants us to see, but some of her dialogue does not work that well, especially toward the end.

Rick’s actions that put him in prison are really the heart of what Gloria wants to

Director Desdemona Chiang helps build the tension and manage a difficult two-people-stuck-in-a-room staging. Lighting is another crucial element, which Jessica Trundy manages with subtlety. While it must be bright prison-visiting lighting, it does not dehumanize the players.

The play helps us walk the steps that reasonable people might walk while wading deeper into objectively unreasonable actions toward fellow humans.

know about, but Gloria’s reactions, which should have been based on knowing the history of what Rick did, are too surprised and too shallow to be appropriate from an academic who seeks a deeper understanding. In this way, Schenkkan’s haste betrays us a bit, since what he wants is to shock us instead of allowing Gloria to pursue her real mission.

Seattle Public Theater presents charming The Flight Before Xmas

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer SEATTLE PUBLIC THEATER THE FLIGHT BEFORE XMAS Through December 24 A sweet, family-friendly new Christmas-time play is performing at Seattle Public Theater, penned by versatile local playwright Maggie Lee. SPT has retired it’s perennial The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and is trying this new show.

The Flight Before Xmas brings disparate humans into contact with each other as they all wait for a flight that must be delayed by weather.

It’s a nightmare that can bring out either the worst in people or the best. In this case, it’s a little of both. It’s a situation we can all identify with: the sinking feeling of being out of control of events while wishing desperately to get to the next thing.

It’s Christmas Eve at SeaTac Airport and we meet a family headed to Hawaii, all in matching shirts, a businesswoman trying to make an important meeting, a young couple of Lesbians, two sets of kids traveling between family households in their now-obligatory need to share visitation, a complaining older woman, a single man, and an airport airline employee who tries hard to provide great customer service.

The interactions are fun to watch and Lee throws in a bit of magic theatricality.

To while away the time, Douglas (Manuel Cawaling), the single man and a world traveler, tells stories of various lands and their Christmas rituals, at which point the entire cast stops and turns into supporting players for those stories. When Douglas describes that Japanese celebrate with buckets of KFC, suddenly everyone starts passing out drumsticks and dancing around.

Two of Ben (Tadd Morgan) and Nicole (Jenn Ruzumna)’s three daughters, Eleanor (Elora Coble) and Gemma (Nava Ruthfield), are happy to go to Hawaii. But Lizzie (Lydia Hayes) is pouting and thinks Christmas in Hawaii is completely wrong.

team trying to keep their kids patient and demonstrating how they listen well, too.

When Gemma accidentally lets young Harrison’s (Hersh Powers) cat out of the carrier into the airport, Harrison’s big sister, Maya (Kaiya Crothall) and the other pair of shuttling kids, Owen (Diego Cruz) and Frances (Lauren Hwang) pitch in to try to find it. Their budding friendship is a nice support to see.

Margo (Kiki Abba, with some of the best sardonic laugh lines), a kid-unfriendly businesswoman, worries about missing a huge interview. Rosemary (Deniece Bleha, as a very cranky grandma) is one of the least effective characters, but since she’s

about the only one who displays a significantly different attitude, one can see why Lee included her.

Young college-age girlfriends, Laurel (Marisol Gonzalez) and Amanda (Tessa Weinland), are traveling to meet Laurel’s parents who do not yet know of Laurel’s real interests in sexual partners and are portrayed as very conservative. Amanda gets a chance to learn to let Laurel come out to her parents in her own time.

As Penny the airline employee, Skye Stephenson has a lovely manner, while clearly trying to master her own disappointments in the delay. She’d be at home at any airline counter in the U.S.!

Energetic Greatest Showman a three-ring sensation

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE GREATEST SHOWMAN Now playing Phineas “P.T.” Taylor Barnum (Hugh Jackman) has big dreams. He’s had them since he was a child, sending letters to the girl who would become the love of his life, wife Charity “Chairy” Hallett (Michelle Williams), outlining all of the amazing things he planned on accomplishing when he reached adulthood. Now that he’s an actual husband and father, however, he’s more worried about putting food on the table and ensuring his two beautiful daughters Caroline (Austyn Johnson) and Helen (Cameron Seely) have the happy childhood he never did, those dreams seemingly forgotten.

But when inspiration strikes, and with Chairy’s urging, Barnum finds a way to get a loan to open a museum of magnificent wonders unlike any other the world has ever seen. Even so, tickets aren’t selling at the rate he needs if he’s going to keep the bank happy. Thankfully, the imaginative showman has another idea, and after coaxing a number of idiosyncratic performers ranging from a bearded woman (Keala Settle) with the singing voice of an angel, to high-flying brother and sister acrobats W.D. (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and Anne Wheeler (Zendaya), to join his troupe of talented oddities, Barnum discovers he’s onto something the general public is falling all over themselves to experience.

Fact and fiction collide in Australian director Michael Gracey’s musical debut The Greatest Showman, this motion picture not so much an authentic biography of the legendary Barnum & Bailey Circus pioneer as it is an excuse for Jackman to stand center ring and show just how phenomenally talented a song and dance man he is. There’s very little truth here. P.T. Barnum was married to Charity Hallett. Two of their four kids were named Caroline and Helen. At one point the vaunted showman did solidify himself as an entertainment impresario far ahead of his time by taking European songstress Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson) on an unprecedented tour of the United States. After that? While I personally haven’t done a heck of a lot digging, it’s

still fairly safe to say Jenny Bicks (What a Girl Wants) and Bill Condon’s (Chicago, Beauty and the Beast) screenplay plays rather fast and loose with anything resembling a historical fact.

Considering just how fantastically entertaining Gracey’s musical ends up being, shockingly this lack of historical authenticity as it pertains to the life and

musicals after Baz Luhrmann utilized them so magnificently in Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge. (While those features made use of their visual pyrotechnics in a way that fit the characters and the stories Luhrmann was attempting to tell, it’s been very hard for pale imitations, like Phyllida Lloyd’s Mamma Mia! or Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages (just to name two), to

times of P.T. Barnum doesn’t prove to be as massive a problem as it by all accounts should be. Featuring a bevy of terrific songs composed by La La Land Oscar-winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, featuring a charismatically titanic performance from Jackman that’s up there with his all-time best and containing beguiling supporting turns from Williams and former High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron, there’s so much to love about The Greatest Showman I kind of don’t want to waste a single second discussing its handful of shortcomings, and in all honesty I simply cannot wait to head back to the theatre and watch it again for a second time sooner rather than later.

do something similar.) By and large Gracey’s debut avoids overcutting, and much like Minnelli or Berkeley he’s happy to let Jackman, Efron or Settle do the heavy lifting for him, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey’s (Atonement) camera capturing things with a confidently sublime sophistication that’s barely noticeable.

If anything, it is the moments when things do get overcut, when the director does start chopping things up into visually chaotic bits and pieces where this musical begins to lose some of its luster. With six credited editors, a list that includes Oscarwinners Tom Cross (Whiplash) and Joe Hutshing (J.F.K., Born on the Fourth of July) and a 105-minute running time that feels much shorter than it actually is, there is a bit of a rushed quality to the events that’s difficult to ignore. The montage covering Jenny Lind’s American tour is par-

ticularly haphazard, and if not for a lovely little song of lament and loss featuring a heartbreaking Williams the less said about this sequence the better.

But the best numbers are simply out of this world. A barroom battle of wills between Jackman and Efron is extraordinary, the pair making like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire tackling “The Babbit and the Bromide” in 1945’s Ziegfeld Follies.

Gracey just lets these two men go for broke, rarely breaking up the action to showcase a differing camera angle, McGarvey chronicling their antics with a velvety effervescence that fits the pair’s athletic elasticity perfectly. There’s also a sensational duet between Efron and Zendaya as the latter trains for a future acrobatic performance, while an early rooftop dance number with Jackman and Williams is a total stunner that brought an instant smile to my face; a smile that somehow remained all the way through the film until the very end.

Then there is the signature central ballad entitled “This Is Me” sung by Tonywinning Broadway superstar Settle. Not only are Pasek and Paul’s lyrics tremendous, the actress sings the song with a heartrending authority that builds into an empowering crescendo that’s tremendous.

She blows the roof off of the movie, Settle and the members of the eclectic supporting cast marching through a sea of appalled, hoity-toity big city movers and shakers with a proud ebullience that had my packed preview audience bursting into applause as soon as the number ended.

I’m sure a more historically accurate film about P.T. Barnum could be made, one that actually looks at his life and times with an introspective candor this one isn’t even minutely interested in doing. Issues of race, gender, equality, treatment of animals and the exploitation of those outside of the considered everyday norm are admittedly brought up, but for the most part they are dealt with in a moderately melodramatic manner that, while hardly offensive, doesn’t really do any of these topics justice.

But as pure entertainment, Gracey’s energetic effort succeeds in a way that goes well beyond anything I anticipated before entering the theatre, The Greatest Showman a three-ring phenomenon the entire family is almost certain to enjoy.

Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig’s highly acclaimed comedic drama, won three awards, including Saoirse Ronan for Best Actress, Laurie Metcalf as Best Supporting Actress, and Gerwig’s script winning Best Screenplay.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s period drama Phantom Thread, reportedly the final film for actor Daniel Day-Lewis, also won three prizes. The film earned Day-Lewis the award for Best Actor, as well as wins for Best Costume Design and Best Original Score.

Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s epic summer blockbuster won two awards; including Nolan named Best Director and the film winning for Best Film Editing.

Sean Baker’s The Florida Project earned two acting prizes: Willem Dafoe for Best Supporting Actor and 7-year-old newcomer Brooklynn Prince, who won this year’s Best Youth Performance award.

The year’s most nominated film, Blade Runner 2049, turned eight nominations into two wins: Best Production Design and Best Cinematography, rewarding the work of legendary cinematographer Roger A. Deakins.

Other winners include: Coco, which won Best Animated Feature, Faces Places, which picked up the prize for Best Documentary Feature, and Raw, a French horror film about a teenage vegetarian who realizes she is a cannibal, was named Best Foreign Language Film.

After forming in the fall of 2016, The Seattle Film Critics Society officially became a non-profit organization in 2017, with a membership consisting of 25 film

New Jumanji a game well worth playing

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE Now playing After being sent to detention, Spencer (Alex Wolff), a brainy nerd with a sensitive side who’s lacking in confidence, Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), a football star who feels it more important to maintain a tough guy reputation than mingle with less popular fellow students he used to be friends with, Bethany (Madison Iseman), an Instagram junkie who has been bamboozled into thinking all anyone cares about are her looks and nothing else, and Martha (Morgan Turner), a quick-witted loner who focuses entirely upon her studies as she’s more comfortable having her nose in a book than she is interacting with others, are forced to clean out a massive storage unit containing all sorts of bric-abrac. While searching through the various shelves and boxes, the group discovers a video game entitled “Jumanji.” With nothing better to do, and not wanting to do any actual work, they decide to give the game a go, each picking a character they believe will be most representative of their various personalities.

Next thing each knows they’ve all been transported inside the game itself, forced to play Jumanji for real with each of them stuck in the body of the character they had picked to portray. Spencer is famed explorer Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), a fearless adventurer with no known weaknesses. Fridge is now Franklin “Moose” Finbar (Kevin Hart), a noted zoologist serving as Bravestone’s weapons valet who happens to have an explosive aversion to cake. Bethany finds herself transformed into crack cartographer Dr. Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), the svelte high school beauty queen not at all certain how she’s supposed to cope with being middle-aged, overweight and decidedly male. As for erudite Martha, she’s Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), a martial arts expert and vaunted killer of men who also just happens to be a

deadly dance fighter. They all have to learn how to work together as a team while also getting used to these new bodies. It’s a fight for survival inside a jungle where almost everything is out to kill them, and if they can’t finish the quest before exhausting all three of their lives, it’s likely they’ll be stuck inside Jumanji forever.

Inspired by Chris Van Allsburg’s bestselling children’s book and something of a sequel to director Joe Johnston’s 1995

increasingly difficult (and lethal) tasks the game forces them to accomplish with unforeseen ease.

Black steals the show. At first, his performance looks like it will be nothing more than a frustratingly effete caricature. But slowly I came to realize just how deep he was going. hit Jumanji, the decades-in-the-making Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is that odd duck of a second chapter in a potential series that no one asked for yet still happens to be far superior to the motion picture that proceeded it. Fast, funny and unexpectedly clever, director Jake Kasdan’s (Zero Effect) latest is somewhat impressive. Not only is the script (credited to four writers) lighter on its feet than anticipated, it also proves to be refreshingly honest with how it assesses Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha, assembling this quartet into a cohesive unit who will learn from their mistakes while they embrace one another’s differences as they make their way through each of the

and bowed by various pressures, many of them self-imposed, to become the petty, selfish brat others see her as. He allows her transformation to be cagily empowering, the empathy and selflessness the character ultimately exudes so touchingly genuine I couldn’t help but be amazed.

Gillan is also terrific, and I loved the way she visualizes Martha’s wonderment as she learns to embrace all sides of her personality and not just the ones that have turned the young brainiac into a closed-off hermit unwilling, maybe even unable, to develop friendships with anyone other than herself. As for Johnson and Hart, they’re as good here as they were in Central Intelli-

gence, the pair’s comedic chemistry arguably even stronger in this than it was in that 2016 hit. Best of all might just be pop superstar Nick Jonas, his mid-movie arrival a welcome infusion of spunk, enthusiasm, hesitation and heart that helps augment the emotional stakes driving the narrative significantly.

I love me some Joe Johnston, and I’ll go to bat every day of the week to fight for the glories of The Rocketeer, October Sky and Captain America: The First Avenger. But even with the late, great Robin Williams throwing himself into things, even with the likes of Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, Bebe Neuwirth, David Alan Grier and Jonathan Hyde going above and beyond to add support, the original Jumanji is nothing more than a frenetic mess. It confuses chaos and confusion with character-driven storytelling, the picture so obsessed with delivering magnificent sights of rampaging animals crashing through quiet small town utopia that it forgets to craft anything close to resembling a story worth caring even the faintest bit about.

But here, it’s as if Kasdan and his team studied Johnston’s feature and realized where it both went wrong as well as what potentially might have allowed it to work.

By focusing on the characters more than it does the spectacle, by creating a wild and wacky Indiana Jones meets John Hughes aesthetic that feels slightly more original than it probably is, the filmmaker has elevated this sequel-slash-reboot in a way that had me grinning for almost every second of the almost two-hour running time.

Only during the last third does the film start to begin to wear out its welcome, the routine action dynamics as tired as they are uninspiring. But Kasdan brings things full circle during the denouement in a manner that is tenderly authentic, giving the characters a moment of familial togetherness that’s honestly kind of priceless. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle might not be a great movie, but sure as heck it’s an entertaining one, and unlike its forerunner, this is one kid-friendly action spectacular I wouldn’t mind watching again.

More, the teen sees something in Oliver that he’s drawn to in a way unlike anything he’s felt before, secret longings burning inside of him suddenly forced out into the open whenever the two find themselves alone in one another’s company.

Based on the novel by André Aciman, with a script written by the great James Ivory (A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries), director Luca Guadagnino’s (I Am Love, A Bigger Splash) ravishing, gorgeously cinematic Call Me by Your Name is a feast for the senses. A hypnotic coming of age story set in the Italian countryside circa 1983, this is a tale of self-discovery and acceptance that, while hardly original, feels as authentically realized as anything a fan of either the book, Ivory’s or Guadagnino’s

Not that I am completely in the bag for the film. Unlike similar efforts like Todd Haynes’s Carol or even Ivory’s own 1987 classic Maurice (which helped propel newcomer Hugh Grant to stardom), not all of the varying subplots lingering at the edges of the story are dealt with or resolved as satisfactorily as I’d hoped they would be.

Marzia is given particularly short shrift, the cruel dismissal the character is forced to endure not sitting at all well with me, even though the moment is clearly foreshadowed early on. It should also be said that, even though I am unfamiliar with the source material, I never had any doubt where things were headed, Elio and Oliver’s relationship walking down a familiar path that a number of LGBTQ coming out tales have sauntered upon for well over three decades.

tions when learning of the teenager’s feelings, these elements work together in such harmony the symphony they compose is hauntingly rapturous. While not so much a love story as an analysis of longing, acceptance, understanding and even lust, the pair evocatively join to form a union that is immediate, concrete and undeniably sincere. Elio’s internal battles as he grapples with who he is and what he wants as it pertains to this sexual awakening are adolescently pure, his mistakes coupled together with his triumphs revealed in a way that is authentically profound; hurt, joy, loss and love all colliding together with mesmeric ease.

But it is the pain he nakedly showcases when Elio is hurt or is forced to deal with the ramifications of his actions where Chalamet soars, the final sequences of the movie haunting in their simplistic naturalism in large part thanks to the actor’s spellbinding performance.

Guadagnino remains as visually confident a director as there is working today.

Working with esteemed cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives), the sights the filmmaker chooses to showcase at the periphery of the screen are almost always

Having small, noteworthy moments in features as diverse as Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, Julia Hart’s Miss Stevens and Scott Cooper’s upcoming Christian Bale/Wes Studi Western Hostiles, as much as I’ve liked the young actor’s performances in the past that still did not prepare me for just how superb he would be here. Chalamet channels all of Elio’s idiosyncratic tendencies and mannerisms as if he’s been playing the character since birth, the way in which he interacts with Stuhlbarg, Casar, Garrel and every other member of the cast as easygoing as it is unforced. His chemistry with Hammer is off the charts, the emotions

just as important as the ones sitting in the center of the frame. This gives the film a look that, while calmingly recognizable, is just as equally its own living, breathing entity as well. The image comes alive in much the same way Elio does, growing in depth, complexity and introspective candor as events slowly make their way towards their emotionally affecting conclusion. Call Me by Your Name might not go anywhere unexpected, yet that doesn’t make the getting to the destination any less of a joy, Guadagnino’s latest a marvel of truthful nuance worthy of a standing ovation.

HOTELS Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa – Scottsdale, Arizona It seems odd that a luxury hotel should be tucked behind a strip mall, though that’s part of the appeal of this new Scottsdale property; it’s really a hidden gem.

Instead of rooms in a traditional hotel building, guests stay in elegantly designed and spacious bungalows with private patios and big glass-door showers that you can literally do jumping jacks in. Three pools, on-site restaurant and bar, plus a helpful, cheery staff makes the Andaz a desert standout. A. Rodriguez Icicle Village Resort – Leavenworth, Washington Themed hotels can come off as gimmicky and I was afraid this resort, situated in the Cascade Mountain range in NorthCentral Washington, would be over the top. But I was delighted to encounter an enchanting Bavarian style property with lots of genuine charm and a variety of activities, from miniature golf to a video arcade, that I could easily see myself returning to.

A. Rodriguez Mountain Shadows – Scottsdale, Arizona Embedded peacefully and majestically in the hills of Paradise Valley, an upscale town overlooking Phoenix, this hotel was originally built in the late 1950s, but reopened in 2017 as an upscale, sophisticated property with contemporary elegance at every turn. If you want to splurge and feel like an A-lister, stay at Mountain Shadows.

Rodriguez Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa – Rancho Mirage, California If you’re planning to explore outside of Palm Springs, rather than spend the majority of your visit in downtown, I highly suggest this expansive hotel in Rancho Mirage that comes with its own water park. It has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a top brand name hotel with close proximity to restaurants, department stores, movie theater, and Coachella or Indian Wells, if you’re looking to attend special events out there. A. Rodriguez RESTAURANTS Acqua California Bistro – Rancho Mirage, California You can’t beat a three-course meal for $19.99, especially when you can select from a list of mouthwatering favorites at this busy Rancho Mirage restaurant, nestled in The River shopping complex. The portions are generous, the sleek decor is fun, the atmosphere is electric and the service is quite friendly. A. Rodriguez Downriggers – Friday Harbor, Washington Overlooking the picturesque harbor on San Juan Island, this re-opened restaurant – which burnt down in 2013 – features a menu of outstanding Northwest-sourced

fish and meat entrees, as well as soups and salads. The views are impeccable and the House Smoked Salmon Plate with the Fish + Chips makes for a wonderful evening out on the town. A. Rodriguez FnB – Scottsdale, Arizona Situated in Scottsdale’s historic Craftsman Court, this restaurant is one of the city’s very best and a favorite amongst local foodies. From the Peruvian Chicken Spring Rolls to the Grilled Half Chicken to the Butterscotch Pudding, I couldn’t have asked for a dinner with more surprisingly tasty results. A. Rodriguez

Mother’s Bistro & Bar – Portland, Oregon If you find yourself in downtown Portland searching for a place to grab breakfast, look no further than Mother’s. This beloved spot is where the locals go, and you’ll understand why when you order the restaurant’s freshly made pancakes, hashes, frittatas, scrambles and a very memorable “Biscuit Breakfast” – two biscuits smothered with country sausage gravy and two eggs any style. The Restaurant at Friday Harbor House – Friday Harbor, Washington Start with the Duck Fat Fries or Oysters with horseradish and cantaloupe sorbet, then move on to the perfectly-cooked Grilled Salmon (if available) or another of Chef Jason Aldous’ stellar dishes at this restaurant, tucked inside the Friday Harbor House on San Juan Island that looks out to the harbor and neighboring islands.

During Greater Palm Springs Pride in November, this place is very, very happening. A. Rodriguez Argonaut: Espresso Bar – Leavenworth, Washington Not quite a cafe, but more of a take out window with limited outside seating is how to describe this adorable espresso bar in the heart of Leavenworth. District is hopping. But on Saturday nights, it’s the place to be because the one and only drag legend Barbra Seville performs to a packed house. You’ll have a lot of fun, for sure, at The Rock. A. And that’s certainly what I loved about this street level cafe inside The Society Hotel in PDX’s Old Town district. It was sweet and charming with a vintage-feel that doubled as a meeting space for locals in addition to hotel guests.

A. Rodriguez VISITOR ATTRACTIONS Bavarian Village – Leavenworth, Washington Whether it’s 80 degrees in the summer, or covered with snow in winter, a stroll through the Bavarian-themed town center is the highlight of any trip to Leavenworth.

Especially during the holidays, when the town is lit up with Christmas decorations, it really does feel like you’ve been transported to the German Alps. A. Rodriguez BMW Performance Center – Thermal, California Just outside Coachella, about 45 minutes from Palm Springs, is a thrill waiting to be experienced. Palm Springs Art Museum – Palm Springs, California I wasn’t expecting to be wowed when I stepped foot into this tri-level, niftydesigned contemporary museum, but once inside I was further impressed with the collections, from “Kinesthesia: Latin American Kinetic Art, 1954-1969,” running through January 2018, to “No Glass Ceiling! Women Working in Glass, Part 1,” presented until March 2018. A. Rodriguez Pine Street Market – Portland, Oregon The Rose City’s first food hall in downtown features an impressive selection of food stalls, from authentic Japanese ramen and locally-made ice cream to freshly baked breads and Spanish-style rotisserie chicken to specialty burgers and high quality espresso. Bring an appetite because there’s a lot of good food to choose from. A. Rodriguez Roche Harbor Resort – San Juan Island, Washington A 10 to 15-minute drive from Friday Harbor, this pristine resort area on San Juan Island is the perfect setting for summer weddings, lazy afternoons, family weekends and much-needed down time.

It’s so lovely and tranquil here that you’ll not want to return to the city bustle anytime soon. A. Rodriguez San Andreas Fault Sunset Jeep Tour with Desert Adventures Red Jeep Tours & Events – Palm Springs, California Riding in the back of a jeep as the sun goes down is a nice way to take in the amazing landscape of the Palm Springs area, but learning about the San Andreas Fault and admiring the breathtaking views from the nearby mountains is a better way to do it. A. Rodriguez San Juan Islands Museum of Art (SJIMA) – Friday Harbor, Washington This two-year old museum showcases works by local artists in a beautiful space once occupied by emergency services.

“Dialogues from the Forest” was 2017’s theme that featured art pieces by Jean Behnke, Peter de Lory, Michael Peterson and Gail Grinnel. A recommended excursion when visiting the San Juan Islands.

Moderately amusing Pitch Perfect 3 a pleasant farewell tour

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer PERFECT PITCH 3 Now playing Now out of college, the a cappella-loving women who used to make up the awardwinning Barden Bellas are struggling to find themselves out in the big, bad world.

Their talented ringleader Beca (Anna Kendrick) has just quit her job as a music producer. Aimless Amy (Rebel Wilson) is living her life as flippantly as ever. Chloe (Brittany Snow) is a nervous wreck waiting to learn whether or not she’s gotten into veterinary school. Aubrey (Anna Camp) is considering a career change. Heck, all of the Bellas, Cynthia (Ester Dean), Lilly (Hana Mae Lee), Flo (Chrissie Fit), Jessica (Kelley Jakle) and Ashley (Shelley Regner) included, are currently floundering. Only happy-go-lucky Stacie (Alexis Knapp) appears to have any direction, the young woman excitedly anticipating the birth of her first child.

After reuniting to watch a performance of the current Barden Bellas led by Beca’s former wide-eyed protégé Emily (Hailee Steinfeld), Aubrey has an amazing idea.

Her incarnation of the Bellas, the ones led by her, Chloe and Beca, they should all reunite for one last hurrah, and as her father is a high-ranking military officer she’s positive she can get them signed on to a current USO tour traveling through Spain and France. With all of the young ladies interested, and with Emily agreeing to fill in for Stacie, the group heads to Europe. Once there, they learn that the four acts scheduled to perform for the troops will also be competing for a spot opening for DJ Khaled on an upcoming tour. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, the Bellas once again are determined to put on an amazing show, these a cappella titans eager to prove they still have what it takes to sing with the best of them.

It’s hard to know what to make of Pitch Perfect 3. The movie understandably plays like a farewell tour, returning writer Kay Cannon’s script not exactly going out of its

way to change up the tune. Collaborating on the sequel with Beatriz at Dinner and Year of the Dog impresario Mike White, the film isn’t invested in its own scenario.

If anything, Cannon and White must have been bored by the prospect of setting up another competition for the women to be a part of. Instead, they choose to focus on the relationships the Bellas have formed since the original Pitch Perfect, doing their best

Even what appear to be major subplots, most notably one involving Amy’s estranged thief father Fergus (portrayed by a game John Lithgow) appearing seemingly out of nowhere to mysteriously reunite with his daughter, add up to practically zero, delivering very little that’s substantive no matter how game each of the various cast members might appear to be.

to give each character a moment to stand out, all in attempt to give each woman a little more dimensionality than they’ve maybe been allowed to exhibit in either of the prior motion pictures.

Not that it works. There is a haphazard, devil-may-care élan to events that sometimes led me to believe Cannon, Kay and director Trish Sie (Step Up All In) were making things up as they were film-

DJ Khaled music producer named Theo (Guy Burnet) go anyplace unexpected, and while I like how the film takes her journey to its logical conclusion, things get there with all the sizzle and spice of an undercooked slice of Spam marinating in lowcalorie mayonnaise.

And yet, call me crazy but Pitch Perfect 3 made me laugh. More importantly, it got me to smile. The Bellas aren’t played

as jokes. Even when they mess something up, their performances are still professional each and every time out. At this point, these women are pros, and while their various personal lives might be in shambles, once they hit the stage they know how to put on an audience-friendly show better than just about anyone else. I really liked how much respect the filmmakers were giving them. No pointless crotch shots mooning the President of the United States. No reliance on gross-out humor to generate a cheap laugh. Other than one obnoxious bit of chaos these women have grown up. They know how to take care of themselves as well as how to look out for those they hold dear, everything adding together to help give the sequel a layer of restraint that’s moderately surprising.

Cannon could have given the rival bands more to do, especially the all-girl rock group calling themselves Evermoist led by a suitably sneering, high-energy Ruby Rose. I’m also not sure why Steinfeld, the only actual bona fide pop star in the movie, decided to return, her character introduced in Pitch Perfect 2 mostly relegated to the background save for the opening number.

There’s also no certainty that this capper to the trilogy will be anywhere near as pleasantly re-watchable as the 2012 first film has proven to be, and as such I can’t say that my initial reaction will hold when I give this one a second look at some unknown point in the future.

Nevertheless, I had far more fun sitting in the theatre watching this sequel than I should probably admit. Don’t get me wrong. A third act twist sends thing into James Bond meets Mission: Impossible territory, and it’s easily as silly as it sounds.

Yet Kendrick, Wilson, Camp, Snow and all the rest of the actresses never allow things to descend into a state of cartoonish tomfoolery, and as bizarrely nonsensical as this subplot proves to be there’s still a layer of charm I found pleasing. I also really liked the closing musical number quite a little bit, and if Pitch Perfect 3 ends up being the Bellas’ a cappella swan song, for my part I can’t help but feel the entire group goes out on something of a satisfying high note.

These plays include Stump the Host, Stitches, One Woman Shoe, which received an Obie Award, Incident at Cobbler’s Knob, and The Book of Liz, which was published in book form by Dramatists Play Service.

Sedaris’ original audio pieces can often be heard on the public radio show “This American Life.” He has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for “Best Spoken Word” and “Best Comedy Album.” His latest audio recording of new stories (recorded live) is David Sedaris: Live for Your Listening Pleasure (November 2009). A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). Since 2011, he can be heard annually on a series of live recordings on BBC Radio 4 entitled Meet David Sedaris.

As a companion piece to Theft By Finding, Jeffrey Jenkins published and edited an art book of Sedaris’s diary covers, entitled David Sedaris Diaries: A Visual Compendium (October 2017). A forthcoming book of essays entitled Calypso is set to be published June 2018 and a second volume of his diaries is expected for summer 2019.
