Khalid, k.d. lang, Andrea Bocelli announce Seattle shows in 2018

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer It’s going to be another busy year for live music in Seattle with dozens of great concerts already booked for the first half of 2018. Already on the docket are appearances by Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Pink, Sam Smith and Harry Styles. You can add Khalid to this list, as the newly minted Grammy nominee has announced a performance at WaMu Theater on May 3. The 19-year-old earned five Grammy nominations this week, including nods for Song of the Year (“1-800-273-8255”) and Best New Artist. His debut album American Teenager featuring the hit single “Location” has sold 1 million copies thus far. Tickets to see Khalid here in Seattle are on sale now at www.LiveNation.com or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. k.d. lang is returning to Seattle, as well, set to perform February 26 at the Moore Theatre. The LGBT artist is continuing her “Ingenue Redux Tour” into next year, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of her album Ingenue, undoubtedly one of the best albums released in the 90s and her most recognized work to date. The album contains lang’s Grammy-winning song “Constant Craving”, plus the hit “Miss Chatelaine”. Interesting fact: The Rolling Stones credited lang and “Constant Craving” co-writer Ben Mink for inspiring their 1997 single “Anybody Seen My Baby?”.

Finally, I forgot to mention the recent passing of another music legend. Malcolm Young, founding member of the iconic hard rock band AC/DC, passed away on November 18 at the age of 64. The group rose to fame in the ’80s with such classic hits as “You Shook Me All Night Long,” “Hells Bells,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “Back in Black.”

Tori Amos is perfection at sold out Seattle concert

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer TORI AMOS PARAMOUNT THEATRE November 24 There is no liking Tori Amos, you either love her or you don’t. And if you don’t, it’s possible we can’t be friends. She is beloved and worshipped by fans. We connect with her emotionally and spiritually in a way that we don’t with other artists. It’s a chemistry and a loyalty between her and us that runs deep.

The highly acclaimed singer-songwriter performed to a sold out audience last weekend at the Paramount Theatre, her first Seattle appearance in several years. Her current tour promotes the release of Amos’ fifteenth studio album Native Invader, but interestingly – and she’s always been interesting – she only played a single track from it, “Wildwood.” Instead, she played a fifteen-song show with music from various recordings that stretched to just under two hours, captivating the crowd from the second she strolled on stage dressed in black pants, a light blue and black top with long, wavy bright red hair that hung over each of her shoulders. She also wears glasses full time these days.

Amos looked radiant on Friday night, but more importantly she sounded exceptional. From the opening number, “iieee,” a track off 1998’s From the Choirgirl Hotel album, we just knew that we were in for a treat. “Amber Waves” featured an intro of “America the Beautiful,” while “Beauty of Speed” from 2007’s American Doll Posse was performed as a dramatic ballad vs. the original mid-tempo version.

“Thank you for coming out tonight,” said Amos early in the evening. It was one of the few moments she interacted with the audience, many of whom were gay men in their 30s and 40s, who’d grown up listening to her music, possibly going as far back as her critically praised 1992 debut Little Earthquakes.

From that album, she sang a wonderful version of “Silent All These Years,” a song used by the RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) campaign to raise awareness of domestic violence. Amos sarcastically crossed her legs and looked directly at

the audience when she landed on the lyrics, “So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts / What’s so amazing about really deep thoughts?”

Many of the songs on Amos’ set list last Friday were fan requests, which is why she strayed from playing newer material.

A stellar, extended rendition of “Seaside” highlighted her chops on both traditional piano and electric keyboard, which she played skillfully by herself, at times simultaneously, while sitting between the two.

Indeed, Amos was a one-woman band at the Paramount, utilizing only pre-recorded background music, but performing the lead vocals and instruments for each song throughout the concert.

A couple of covers were squeezed into the show, as Amos played unique interpretations of Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Springs,” citing Stevie Nicks as one of her favorite songwriters, and U2’s “Running to Stand Still.” Meanwhile, another pair of surprise entries on the set list, “Seaside” and “Apollo’s Frock,” were plucked out of a little proj-

ect from 2004 called Scarlet’s Hidden Treasures, consisting of six tracks that had all been written years before.

Prior to “Wildwood,” the main set’s closing number, Amos delighted the packed theater with an effortless delivery of “Forest of Glass” from the 2014 release, Unrepentant Geraldines. As she left the stage, blowing kisses to the audience and shaking hands with a couple of lucky fans at the front, the crowd rose to its feet and began to cheer for an encore. Within a few minutes, Amos obliged and returned. A few dozen admirers rushed towards the stage to get a closer experience, something not usually allowed at theater concerts anymore, but the security guards didn’t seem to mind and neither did the alternative rock goddess who welcomed them like a mother seeing her college kids come home for the holidays.

The two-song encore was a complete turnaround from the main set with Amos performing upbeat, remix-like versions of “Precious Things” and “Raspberry Swirl.”

(The latter found lots of folks dancing up

towards the front and in the aisles.) With colorful strobe lights flashing in all directions and a starry, disco ball-style reflection covering the stage, it felt as if we’d been transported to a gay club.

This was a flawless performance. Yes, I would’ve loved for Amos to have tacked on a few more songs at the end; but what we got were fifteen perfectly executed pieces of music that some of us had been dying to hear for ages. The show felt intimate, perhaps because she played alone and maybe because aside from a large screen behind her that displayed an occasional image of a forest, mountain, or something else of natural beauty, there was nothing to distract us from watching and listening to her, which is exactly what we wanted that night: Tori Amos all to ourselves.

The biggest surprise of Tuesday morning, when nominations for the 60th Grammy Awards were posted online, was not who got in, but who was left out.

Although they managed to score a couple of nods in the pop, R&B and rock fields, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, Lady GaGa, Imagine Dragons, Taylor Swift and Foo Fighters were shut out of the major categories.

Not only that, usual contenders Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Rihanna were left off the list entirely.

For the time ever, three hip hop recordings are vying for Album of the Year, Kendrick Lamar’s Damn., Jay Z’s 4:44 and Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love!

All three artists are also going head-tohead for Record of the Year with Lamar’s “HUMBLE.,” Jay Z’s “The Story of O.J.” and Childish Gambino’s “Redbone.” Joining the trio for Album of the Year are Bruno Mars for 24K Magic and the lone female act, Lorde for Melodrama, who interestingly received no nominations in any other categories. The remaining two Record of the Year slots went to Luis Fonsi with “Daddy Yankee” and Justin Bieber for “Despacito” and Bruno Mars for “24K Magic,” the title track from his commercially successful 2016 album.

Competiting for Best New Artist are Alessia Cara, Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels and SZA. Sadly, this isn’t an impressive lineup, as the Recording Academy overlooked better acts, such as James Arthur, Bryson Tiller and country upstart Brett Young. Speaking of country, this is the first time I can remember that the Nashville genre was also completely shut out in all major categories; not a single country artist is up for Album, Record and Song of Year, or Best New Artist. Overall, hip hop and R&B dominated the major races filling 11 of the 20 spots.

What I Like,” “Issues,” “4:44” and “1-800273-8255,” which encourages kids to call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline – the number is the actual song title – if they’re contemplating ending their lives.

Two local artists received Grammy nods, electronic duo Odesza is nominated for Best Dance Recording (“Line of Sight” featuring WYNNE and Mansionair) and Best Dance/Electronic Album (A Moment Apart), while the late Chris Cornell scored a mention for his posthumous single “The Promise” in the category of Best Rock Performance.

Cornell wasn’t the only non-living musician to earn a Grammy nod. Leonard

Cohen, Gregg Allman and Glen Campbell were all included on the list of nominees.

Additionally, the late Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher is in the running for Best Spoken Word Album.

The 60th Grammy Awards ceremony will be televised live on January 28 from New York City, returning to the Big Apple for the first time in 15 years.

The stories, chosen and interwoven by playwright Paula Vogel, are meant to acknowledge many issues present at that time of divided national interests. Slaves are being freed, North and South are still at war and full of enmity for one another, and Lincoln is under increasing threat of attack.

There is much darkness, and the struggle for peace and for human connection is a difficult one to win.

An ensemble cast of 13 plays multiple roles. There are, I hear, 60 scenes, which is a lot of scenes. This is apparently less than the published version, and was cut by permission. Still, the tumultuous tales don’t blend easily and following their paths takes

a lot of attention from audience members.

The extensive list of songs used includes many familiar Christmastime songs and some other familiar tunes. Sometimes, they are reflections of the script element of the moment: a mother tells her daughter to follow the North Star and they’ll be able to find freedom, and the song “Follow the Drinking Gourd” is sung. Sometimes, the reference is peace or Christmas Eve and then a Christmas song is sung.

Stories included are: Mrs. Lincoln (Marianne Savell) wants a Christmas tree for the Blue Room and accidentally takes the one slated for the famous dressmaker who bought her own freedom, Elizabeth Keckley (Dedra D. Woods). Mrs. Keckley wants the tree for a supportive community that helps the needy, and is plagued by memories of her slain son. A slave and her daughter walk for days to find freedom, but are separated near the capital on a freezing

night. A young Southerner is eager to take his horse and join the fight for the South.

A free-black ironworker (Tyler Trerise) yearns for his wife’s whereabouts after she was captured from their front porch and maybe taken to slavery. John Wilkes Booth (Chris Shea) plots with others to kidnap President Lincoln. And there are more.

The sheer volume of characters overwhelms the performance. Everyone at Taproot does their best to pull this off, including the two musicians (Elizabeth Rainey and Thao B. Huynh), directors Karen Lund and Faith Bennett Russell, costumer Jocelyne Fowler, technicians and all 13 of the lovely cast. (I should make special mention of young Elena Clipper who plays the daughter with dignity and aplomb.)

There are many moments that move and tug at your heart. Certainly, the danger present at that time is made real. However, the entire effort is disjointed and stilted,

and that is the fault of a playwright who has bitten off far more than can be realistically “chewed.” It may have been an experiment on her part, but this tapestry has too many hanging threads.

Still, it’s something “different” than your normal holiday fare and the cast makes it worth your while.

“True Blood” actress Rutina Wesley comes out, engaged to girlfriend

Rutina Wesley, who played humanturned-vampire Tara Thornton on the HBO series “True Blood,” officially came out last week to colleagues and fans on Instagram by announcing her engagement to her girlfriend on November 18. Posting a quote that read: “Overthinking is the biggest cause of our unhappiness. Keep yourself occupied. Keep your mind off things that don’t help you.” And posting a series of photos of herself and girlfriend Shonda, a chef in New Orleans, the Las Vegas-born actress revealed a piece of her personal life that she had kept secret up until then. Immediately, followers began posting congratulatory notes, some with rainbow, heart and ring emojis.

Wesley shared the good news with the world just two days before she received good news herself, an Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series nomination for this

year’s NAACP Image Awards for her work on the TV drama “Queen Sugar,” a show created by Oscar-nominated writer-director Ava DuVernay (Selma) and produced

by Oprah Winfrey. Since the completion of “True Blood,” which lasted 7 seasons and featured the character of Tara having a bisexual relationship with a female vampire bar owner, Wesley has guest starred in the TV shows “Arrow” and “Hannibal.”

In 2013, Wesley won an NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress, for her work on “True Blood,” which also netted her a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2010. “Queen Sugar,” based on the book of the same title, that follows the lives of three siblings in Louisiana who are left with an 800-acre farm as an inheritance when their father dies, has been renewed for a third season.

soldiers and house mice, and where resolution is a happy dream of dancing candy canes and waltzing flowers. If the mix of races drew the audience’s attention in Act I, it seemed perfectly natural by Act II. The all-inclusive world of “Balanchine’s Nutcracker” is a world we can see and hope to live in because the narrative has been reimagined and shown to us in all its peace and human richness.

This is not to say that the psychological underpinnings of “Nutcracker” are not serious drama. They are full of anxiety and fear, threats and transformations. E.T.A. Hoffman, whose story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” is the source of the ballet, packs his tale with dangerous imaginings and edgy characters. Some critics regret the ballet’s “sugarcoating” that they perceive has smothered Hoffman’s fantastic drama. Yet this softer story – with its Sugar Plum Fairy, Marzipan Shepherdesses, and cozy Mother Ginger who protects little children under her skirts – has two messages; one for youngsters and one for adults. Little kids see an ideal world full of holiday fun and excitement, while adults see a battle between good and evil, the progress of children toward adult responsibility, and an imaginary world where bravery is rewarded. This double-ness is why “Nutcracker” can be seen again and again as children grow older and appreciate new

aspects of it with each viewing. The test of great art is that you want to experience it more than once – to read it, look at it, hear it, or see it again and again – and “George Balanchine’s Nutcracker,” as presented by PNB, is great art.

On opening night we had a non-stop display of wonderful dancing augmented by the clever sets and costumes. I always marvel at the talent and discipline of even the littlest children, from Adrien Hoshi’s rascally Fritz, to Tatiana Lipina’s Hare Drummer. The children in Act I performed their reels and courtly dances to perfection, while the little Soldiers, Angels, Candy Canes, and Polichinelles glided, leapt, and danced their complex steps to perfection. Only one little angel snuck a peek and a grin at her parents on opening night – a miracle considering how many children must have been tempted.

The bouquets and kudos of the night go to the PNB dancers in Act II whose virtuosity and perfection was truly awe-inspiring, from the solos of Elizabeth Murphy’s Dewdrop and James Moore’s Candy Cane, to the heart-stopping perfection of the duet of Sarah Ricard Orza as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier Seth Orza, to the corps de ballet’s gorgeous Waltz of the Flowers. Far from being sugarcoating, these dances are visionary – human endeavor at its educated, trained, cooperative, flawless best.

A week or so before opening night some of us lucky souls were invited to a rehearsal in the PNB studios to see the original 1892 Petipa choreography of some key Nutcracker dances, compared with Balanchine’s 1954 choreography that we’re seeing today. I could write an essay on the fascinating differences, one of which was the daring and dangerous movements Balanchine introduced that reflect the development of ballet and the capabilities of today’s dancers. At one point, as we watched the Sugar Plum Fairy race across the stage and leap onto the shoulder of her Cavalier, the small audience of guests witnessed one of those scary moments that must happen all the time in the rehearsal studios but almost never on stage, when the Sugar Plum Fairy began to fall backward off the Cavalier’s shoulder. He caught her, of course, and they – and we – gasped and laughed all at once – but it was a startling reminder of the physical Olympics we see every time we go to the ballet. They make it look so easy! And yet everything associated with a production like “Nutcracker” takes years of practice to perfect – the dancing, the design, the construction of costumes and wigs and shoes, the PNB orchestra’s marvelous playing.

What a feast of human talent and optimism!

And what a privilege to have this beautiful experience year after year.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ve deprived yourself of a rare and deeply satisfying experience. Give yourself the best holiday present you possibly can and get your tickets before they’re gone! PNB’s “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” is performed at McCaw Hall through December 28.

by Sharon Cumberland SGN A&E Writer PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET “GEORGE BALANCHINE’S THE NUTCRACKER” MARION OLIVER MCCAW HALL November 24 (continues through 12/28) Opening night at Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Christmas classic, “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker,” has become a Seattle fixture in its third season. There is no happier place in the city than the lobby of McCaw Hall, with its audience of excited dance lovers in their sparkling best, and proud parents escorting tutu’d and bow-tied youngsters to their first (or maybe annual) ballet. There are college couples on the best date night ever, and wraith-like ballet students gliding around under glossy topknots. Gray-haired elders navigate the crowds arm-in-arm with grandchildren, and everyone gathers around the magicians performing “close magic,” or craft stations where kids can make ornaments or see the inside of the Mouse King’s mask. Or they’re taking each other’s pictures at photo stations where you can pose in a sugar-cane house, a magic forest, or under the skirts of Mother Ginger. The biggest, most beautifully decorated Christmas tree in Seattle towers over the entrance as friends meet each other in the dining room or patron lounges, or drink peppermint martinis at the cocktail bar. Gazing down on the happy crowd from the top of the grand staircase is an exciting prelude to entering the auditorium where Ian Falconer’s witty trompe l’oeil opera boxes frame the now-familiar scrim with its bright red “N”.

Who can resist an evening of visual magic set to Tchaikovsky’s immortal music?

We settled into our seats full of excited anticipation and were charmed again by the famous overture – during which a magical movie swoops us on a voyage in time with the music, from the moon-lit, starry sky, over snowy mountains, into a conifer forest, down a village street to the front steps of the Stahlbaum’s stately home. A gang of little mice swarm over the doorstep and into the foyer where two children in party clothes are drowsing, waiting to be admitted to the Christmas parlor with its tree and presents.

Who, among those who have seen it, can forget the coup de téâtre when the scrim disappears and the two painted children become real children, Clara and Fritz, who jump up and tussle over who gets to look through the keyhole? I’ve seen this enchanted moment three times now, and every time it brings tears to my eyes.

This time I was particularly moved that the lovely young dancer playing Clara, Samrawit Saleem, is girl of color – a point

that someday will arouse no comment – but that is an important choice to notice in this era of racial sensitivity and insensitivity, especially in the very-white ballet world.

After all, Misty Copeland of the New York City Ballet made front-page news as the first black ballet dancer in any major company to be promoted to the rank of principal because her particular aesthetic is finally being valued along with her talent. When you consider that the “Stowell/Sendak Nutcracker,” retired from PNB in 2014, had white dancers portray “dervishes” dressed in brown skin suits and curly black wigs, as well as a “Pasha” in a big turban wielding a whip over a gang of little “moors,” we can see how far PNB has come in rewriting the narrative of story ballet.

I’m a big fan of re-writing the narrative in any medium. As a poet (in my other life) I re-tell troubling stories with reimagined endings because I’m convinced that if we can imagine it, we can cause it to happen.

Clearly the artists and directors of PNB can imagine a world in which a family and their friends are as varied as the ornaments on the Christmas tree or the patterns in the dancer’s vivid costumes. As the first act holiday party progresses and the guests enter with their children and elders, we see folks of every stripe mixing together in the parlor – a place I think of as Peace – where conflict is a child’s scary dream about toy

Hysterical Disaster Artist finds Franco channeling his inner Wiseau

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE DISASTER ARTIST Now playing If you’ve never seen Tommy Wiseau’s 2003 epic failure The Room, just know it is a one-of-a-kind marvel of cinematic incompetence unlike anything I’ve maybe seen before. It makes Ed Wood (Plan 9 from Outer Space, Glen or Glenda) look like an unparalleled genius. It could lead one to believe that Uwe Boll (House of the Dead, Postal) isn’t nearly as inept as his odious filmography would imply. The Room is an eye-popping masterpiece of ego and stupidity run amok, all of it wrapped up in a nonsensical melodrama about love, loss and friendship that is as cliché as it is selfimportantly maudlin. To put things bluntly, it is gloriously awful on an almost unimaginable scale, and as such deserves its status as some sort of weirdly obnoxious cult midnight phenomenon.

It’s not necessary to have seen The Room before watching James Franco’s marvelous, hilariously insightful look at its creation, The Disaster Artist, but having familiarity with it certainly doesn’t hurt. Even with that being the case, Franco has outdone himself, his direction of Scott Neustadter (The Fault in Our Stars) and Michael H. Weber’s (Paper Towns) delightfully nuanced script (the pair adapting Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s bestselling book, The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made) light years beyond anything he’s accomplished up to now behind the camera.

From an acting standpoint he’s even better, the former Oscar-nominee turning in a performance as Wiseau that’s up there with the finest 2017 has had to offer up to now.

The genius of Neustadter and Weber’s screenplay is that it doesn’t choose to focus on the failure. Instead, the pair have concocted a scenario that emphasizes that friendship between Tommy Wiseau (Franco) and Greg Sestero (Dave Franco), the pair meeting in a San Francisco acting class and discovering that they share a mutual love for cinema. Making the impulsive decision to move to Los Angeles in order to follow their dreams, the men quickly take up residence in Wiseau’s shockingly sprawling downtown condo.

When things don’t work out like either hoped, Sestero jokes that things would be so much easier if they could just write, direct and finance their own movie instead of jumping through hoops to act in someone else’s picture. But Wiseau doesn’t treat this suggestion as a gag, and almost overnight he’s personally financing, directing, producing and scripting a feature film he also plans to star in as well.

What follows isn’t just an examination of ineptitude. While it’s obvious to everyone that Wiseau is in way over his head as it pertains to every single aspect of filmmaking known to human beings since the inception of the medium over a century ago, his passion is never in doubt. His relationship with Sestero is the heart and soul of the story, the two becoming something akin to brothers as events regarding the movie the pair is attempting to make catapults to its inevitably catastrophic conclu-

sion. As such, the elder Franco’s casting of his younger brother Dave ends up being so much more than a stunt, the two actors forging a symbiotic give and take that feels utterly genuine for every second of the 103-minute running time.

It’s this insight into the Wiseau and Sestero relationship that allows the numerous laughs lurking inside this comedic masterwork to have their gut-busting kick.

But it also gives them emotional heft and resonance, and much like Tim Burton’s Ed Wood, Franco finds a way to balance the absurd and the human in a manner that is invigorating. As a directing achievement, this is fairly impressive stuff, the level of specificity as it pertains to details ranging from the highly technical to the deeply personal assuredly spot-on. Franco manages to craft jokes that crackle with electricity, the entire section of the film centering on the production of The Room extraordinary.

He’s even better from an acting standpoint. Franco delivers one of the best performances of his career, maybe even exceeding his spellbinding turns in Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours and Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Howl. His version of Wiseau isn’t some “Saturday Night Live” caricature. Instead, Franco dives in, finding cryptic little corners inside the peculiar man’s ticks and quirks that are fascinating.

His mesmerizing turn overflows with intensity, his fanatical fervor achieving a surreal form of pathos and miserable mystery that’s oddly heartbreaking.

I get the feeling that Franco feels some sort of kinship with Wiseau, which might be why he’s managed to make such a compelling motion picture out of the wannabe filmmaker’s historically awful failure.

Intermixed between his busy acting schedule, James Franco has somehow found the time to direct 36 shorts, features, documentaries and episodes of episodic television since 2005, and more than a few of those, as ambitious and as well-meaning as they are, aren’t particularly good or worth the effort of seeking out. Heck, according to the folks over at IMDb he’s got five directorial projects set for completion in 2018 alone, a staggering number for any filmmaker, let alone one who also has a thriving acting career to maintain at the exact same time.

Maybe that kinship is why this movie works out as magnificently as it does.

Overflowing in genuine laughs, featuring career-best work from Dave Franco and a number of winning supporting turns from an all-star cast (which includes the likes of Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Zac Efron, Megan Mullally, Jacki Weaver, Melanie Griffith and Sharon Stone), the story at the heart of all of this also manages to connect on a profound emotional level that I found unexpected.

By channeling his inner Tommy Wiseau, James Franco manages to craft an intentional comedic sensation out of an unintentionally hilarious failure, The Disaster Artist rising to a level of genuine greatness that’s astonishing.
