Lorna Luft: On her family, Irving Berlin and performing in 5th Avenue Theatre's Holiday Inn

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer IRVING BERLIN’S HOLIDAY INN 5TH AVENUE THEATRE November 24-December 31 Lorna Luft has been a performer all her life. As the daughter of the legendary Judy Garland and the impresario director Sid Luft (A Star is Born), she has hailed from one of the greatest show-biz families in American history. She made her film debut at age 11 in the 1963 film I Could Go On Singing (her mother’s final film), and then appeared on “The Judy Garland Show” later that year. She’s become accomplished on stage, and in concert, cabaret and in various stage performances. She has also become a film actress and has written an autobiography. Currently, she is starring in the 5th Avenue’s seasonal production of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn. Eric Andrews-Katz: Who were your earliest influences in becoming a performer?

Lorna Luft: Well. That one is a bit obvious. I was literally born into the business, so I really didn’t have any outside influences. It’s like being born into a family of doctors or lawyers; you tend to be drawn (and go into) that field. I was born into it and sort of went into the family business.

Celebrating 43 Years!

Once a Christian music star, Trey Pearson now sings a different kind of heavenly tune

That’s what Trey Pearson can say now that the past is behind him and the future looks brighter than ever. The 34 year-old singer-songwriter is a former Christian music star, the celebrated ex-frontman of worship rock band Everyday Sunday, which scored five #1 singles and twenty Top 10 hits on the Christian charts domestically, in addition to selling millions of albums in a seven-year span. But when Pearson publicly came out as a gay man to the group’s fans last year, creating a national media storm, he faced an unfortunate end to his whole career. Thankfully, the closing of that door led to the opening of another, as the Ohio native retreated to what he does best, writing songs, and thus producing a set of pop tracks for his debut solo EP titled Love is Love.

Reached by telephone this week, I had a few minutes to chat with Pearson about this new chapter in his life and career. Here’s what he had to say.

Albert Rodriguez: How do you describe your music? Is it Christian pop, or is there another genre you place it into?

Trey Pearson: No, I don’t describe it as Christian. I guess it’s pop music.

Rodriguez: Your career started in Christian music. Do you still perform any songs from those albums?

Pearson: Sometimes, yeah. I used to be on a Christian label and in a band called Everyday Sunday; then I left my label after my contract was up, after four albums. Last summer I came out publicly to my fans and this EP (Love is Love) is my debut. It’s been a crazy transition in my life. I think the idea of calling music Christian became somewhat of a turnoff early in my career, just being a part of that industry. I think calling something Christian, besides the church, is a little weird, like calling Chick-fil-A a Christian restaurant, or a piece of music a Christian album. I think the word Christian is a much better adjective to describe a human being than a genre of music. As far as performing songs that I used to do, some of those songs are about my faith, but a lot of them aren’t necessarily about my faith.

There’s a lot of stuff I’ve written before that I’m very proud of.

Rodriguez: What was your coming out

experience like? Did you post something on social media, or were you outed?

Pearson: I came out publicly on the cover of a local magazine in Columbus called 614 and I guess it went pretty viral; it got picked up by the New York Times, Washington Post, NBC and ABC, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I think I was lucky. It was exciting to see that the world is changing because I did have a lot of support. Being on “The View” and CNN; I think there was an overwhelming amount of love that was given out to me. I knew it would be talked about, but I had no idea how much it would be talked about and by the night my story had come out it was the #1 trending topic on Facebook, and that was a little surreal. And then to get a call the next day from “The View,” it was crazy. But I’m very grateful to have shared my story and to see the impact it’s been able to have on other people; it’s been really encouraging.

Rodriguez: Did you grow up going to church, or going to youth group?

Pearson: Yeah, I grew up very much entranced in evangelical Christian culture.

I started a band in my youth group, when I was in high school and I got a record deal with that band after my first year of college.

So I was really consumed by that Christian sub-culture and that had such an impact on me, trying not to be who I really am. I was very much scared growing up that God would hate me if I was gay and I was scared that my family would not be proud of me, that they’d think something was wrong with me. I also thought there was something wrong with me because I was so brainwashed. So it took a really long time to accept myself.

Rodriguez: Has the fan base from Everyday Sunday migrated to your solo work, or have those fans abandoned you?

Pearson: Definitely some of them have abandoned me and definitely some of them have stayed. I just put out my second single, the title track to my new EP, “Love is Love,” my first solo project that I’ve ever put out, so I have no idea what to expect.

I feel like this is the best, most intimate thing I’ve ever shared before and I’m really excited to share it; and as far as older fans, I have no idea how many of them, what percentage of them are left listening. But I also think I’ve gained a lot of new fans, or people that were interested and excited to hear what I’m doing.

Rodriguez: Did you write all the songs on your EP? Pearson: I wrote some of them by myself, and some of them, I co-wrote with my producer and another guy.

Rodriguez: What’s the background of the song “Hey Jesus,” which seems to question whether being gay is acceptable in the eyes of God? Pearson: It’s just one of those things that I was thinking about, everything I’d been going through. I was sitting in my living room with my guitar – and some of these songs take longer to write than others – but honestly, I wrote this song in about a half hour or less and I probably spent about another hour or two on the floor bawling my eyes out when I wrote it. It really encapsulates all the emotions I felt my entire life growing up that I think so many people from the LGBT community feel. So many of us have grown up in very fundamentalist Christian, or religious, backgrounds just wanting to know that you’re loved and wanting to know you’re accepted and to be loved just as I am. I was trying to not necessarily be theologically correct, or anything like that, but it’s more trying to describe some emotions and issues that I’ve always felt. It was just a real emotional time, to finally open up and release that valve of emotions that I felt most of my entire life, it was such a beautiful and overwhelmingly emotional moment that led to my songwriting.

Rodriguez: Is Everyday Sunday done completely, or is there room for a reunion?

Pearson: No, it’s done. It was a great chapter of my life and there are things about it that I’m very proud of, something I’d been doing since I was 16, but I’m very excited to have a fresh start to my life and to put out my debut solo work.

Rodriguez: Are you planning to go on tour with this new music any time soon?

Pearson: Yeah, I’m actually on my way to Chicago for a show right now, but I’m doing an EP release day concert in Columbus next Thursday night, which will launch the beginning of a 30-city club tour that I’ll be doing. I’ll hopefully be touring all over the world this next year or two.

Rodriguez: What are your holiday plans this year? Will you be on the road for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or at home?

Pearson: I’ll definitely be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m very happy about that.

But because these last weeks on the calendar tend to feature a unique offering of live music and theatrical performances that you won’t get to see anywhere else. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been naughty or nice, all you need is to buy a ticket and you’re in.

Here are six shows to consider attending in late November and December: DINA MARTINA CHRISTMAS SHOW 2017 RE-BAR November 24-December 31 You just never know what Dina Martina is going to do, but it’s guaranteed to be wacky and hilarious and downright weird at times. She’s a drag queen trainwreck on stage and that’s why we love her, because she always marches to the beat of her own silly drum. So talented, the Seattle entertainer has now grown her audience outside of the Pacific Northwest, frequently packing theaters and clubs along both coasts, from Los Angeles and San Francisco to New York and Provincetown, and even across the pond in London. Her interpretations of songs like “One Night in Bangkok,” “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Looking Through the Eyes of Love” and “Greatest Love of All” are well, interesting, to say the least, not to mention her quirky pronunciations and personal wardrobe (let’s just say she has her own style).

Dina Martina is legendary, not just in her own mind, but she is a holiday staple in the Emerald City that audiences have adored for many years. She’ll give evening and

A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS LIVE PANTAGES THEATER (IN TACOMA) November 30 Good grief, it’s Charlie Brown live! The popular Peanuts character and his usual crew – Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Peppermint Patty, Woodstock and Sally – are coming to Tacoma in person later this month. CHRIS ISAAK HOLIDAY TOUR 2017 MOORE THEATRE December 3 I really don’t care what Chris Isaak does for two hours, I just want to stare at him and drool. But the guy does play a mean guitar and he’s got a damn good voice, so that makes his upcoming concert at the Moore Theatre even more interesting. The sexy singer-songwriter, who once dated Margaret Cho, scored a series of hits on the rock charts between 1990 and 1996, including “Wicked Game,” “San Francisco Days,” “Somebody’s Crying” and “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing,” to name a few. And he’s no stranger to getting into the holiday spirit, releasing his own Christmas album in 2004 that featured a cover of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” with Stevie Nicks. For

DECK THE HALL BALL THE KILLERS, THE LUMINEERS, ODESZA, PORTUGAL.THE MAN, ETC. KEY ARENA December 5 This is one of the most eclectic lineups for Deck The Hall Ball, local radio station The End’s annual holiday shindig, which is celebrating its 25th year this time around.

I’m not sure you’ll ever see alternative rockers The Killers and folk-pop darlings The Lumineers on the same ticket again, at least not in the Emerald City. Throw in two Northwest acts, Seattle electronic duo Odesza and Portland indie band Portugal.The Man, plus a few rising artists and you have the makings of a show that will certainly draw lots of little elves to Key Arena in early December. Andrews-Katz: How would you describe the relationship between your mother and father?

Luft: I’d say a huge amount of love. A huge amount of emotions. A huge amount of laughter. Definitely some chaos. I guess you could say it was all the emotions you can think of wrapped up in a great big box.

Andrews-Katz: Despite being on different sides in show business, was your mother or father more influential in your career?

Luft: It was sort of the big elephant in the room that no one talked about. They never discouraged me, nor did they really encourage me. They let me make up my own mind. When I said “I want to do this,” they looked at each other and said, “Well, here comes another one.” It wasn’t talked about or discussed. We never had any sort of family meeting about it.

Andrews-Katz: You spent a good portion of your life in London doing cabarets and spending time with The Who and The Rolling Stones. How would you describe the music scene during those times?

Luft: Oh my God! It was the British Invasion and it changed every facet of all professions from music to social lives to everything! It was the most exciting time to be in London, in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. You can’t imagine how new it all was. Everything was new from the fashion to all the incredible music. It was where Britain really became the beacon of Pop music and Rock ’n’ Roll.

Andrews-Katz: In 2001, your autobiography, Me and My Shadows, was made into a television miniseries. Was it odd to see your life portrayed by someone else?

Luft: No. Alison Pill (who played young Lorna) is a fantastic, fantastic actress. I call her “Mini-Me.” She is a brilliant woman who has a fantastic career, and is now married and a mom herself. I couldn’t have been happier for anyone. I can’t tell you how grateful to Alison I am for her portrayal of myself. She is one of the most talented young actresses of today.

Andrews-Katz: What part of your family legacy has been the hardest to separate yourself from?

Luft: I don’t think that way. I don’t think of separating myself from my family’s legacy. I am a part of it. I will always be a part of a legacy that has become so important, not only to children, but to teenagers, young people growing up and elders.

I don’t separate myself. I am very honored to be a part of that. I have a responsibility to hold my mother’s legacy in the best light.

Andrews-Katz: You have survived alcoholism and breast cancer. What advice would you give to anyone reading this and struggling with either?

Luft: The only advice I can give to anyone facing a life altering condition, is realize that the first thing you have to do is to be proactive in getting care. That means health care, whether it is for the disease of alcohol and drug abuse, or if it is cancer. You must be proactive in getting help! Because the information, the knowledge, the science

and the facilities [to help] are all there.

Andrews-Katz: How did you first get involved with performing in the musical Holiday Inn? Luft: The 5th Avenue called me. I’ve been with White Christmas for a while (on Broadway) and now with Holiday Inn. The greatest news is that I’m still singing Irving Berlin at Christmas time!

Andrews-Katz: Since your family was close to Irving Berlin and his family, what kind of nostalgia do you feel, performing the music from Holiday Inn? Luft: I feel that it isn’t just nostalgia.

It’s the fabric of the Great American Songbook. Nobody loved this country as much as Irving Berlin. I mean he wrote “God Bless America.” I feel that it is an honor to perform these songs. I’ve met two of the Berlin Sisters, and they have always been incredibly generous and great to me. I guess I feel that responsibility of making sure that we do right by his work. Certainly, Holiday Inn is the biggest love letter to Irving Berlin, and not just because he wrote it. It is a love letter to everyone that comes into the theater.

Andrews-Katz: What is it about Irving Berlin’s music that has made it so well beloved and part of the American Songbook?

including my mother’s passing. It had to do with the tension that built up and built up.

When SIGBI asked me to be on the Board, I was honored. What they do is really the grass roots in American towns where the LGBTQ community is too frightened [to speak out], and helps with financial aid and education. It is there for every kind of social issue that we are facing. It’s also for the people that need the education, so that they realize we are ALL equal. We are ALL

Luft: They were really great songs. We don’t have to do a lot of soul searching on the man that did such great work. He knew how to write melodies and lyrics that linger and are remembered. Especially when we were going through World War II, he wrote all those patriotic songs. Then there are the love songs and the songs that are pure fun.

As Jerome Kern said, “Irving Berlin has no place in American music. He IS American music. Emotionally, he honestly absorbs the vibrations emanating from the people, manners and life of his time.”

Andrews-Katz: Your mother’s death is associated with The Stonewall Riots.

What can you tell us about “The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative” (SIGBI – http:// www.Stonewallinitiative.org)?

Luft: I know people that were there that night. It had to do with a lot of things,

human beings. Especially in today’s times, this is such a big message. To treat people with respect, humanity and dignity. I was (and am) thrilled to be on the Board. I was there when the organization was formed in 2016. The LGBTQ community is very important to me. I was raised in a home that was color blind, and a place where everybody must be treated as an equal and with respect and humanity. I watched my mother do that. I know how much she hated bigotry and hated intolerance. That was how I was raised. That’s how I raised my two children (my son now lives in Seattle), and my three grandchildren. It’s important to make sure we are all equally human. When they asked me to be on the Board, I immediately said “yes” because of what the organization is trying to do. It’s really an incredible honor to be not only on the board but also associ-

ated with a building that is so iconic. Now, because of President Obama, it has become an American Landmark. I have never been happier than to be there last year at the dedication ceremony.

Andrews-Katz: Why do you think the women in your family have become gay icons?

Luft: I don’t think there is one answer to that. I hold the LGBTQ community with such respect because they have kept my mother’s memory in such a great light – it’s like a Beacon. I don’t know that there is an answer to that. I wish we didn’t have to have labels for everyone, but right now we do, and that’s the reality. I’m deeply respectful and very, very grateful (and honored) that the LGBTQ community has wrapped their arms around all the women in my family. The only other answer is, that you [the LGBTQ community] have excellent taste.

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role – regardless of all limitations – what would it be and why?

Luft: I honestly don’t think about that.

I prefer to think about what I am doing right now. I think it is important to be in the moment. “Louise Badger” (Holiday Inn) is a dream role. I don’t think outside of that because you find, if you don’t play that role you really want, or you get told you’re too old, then that dream is crushed.

Take what you are doing right now to live in the moment, on everything you do. And be grateful.

Lorna Luft has appeared on Broadway, in London’s West End, and has traveled the world with concert and cabaret performances. She has appeared in the cultclassic Grease 2 and has even played “The Wicked Witch” in a stage version of The Wizard of Oz. Paramount Pictures released Holiday Inn in 1942. Originally starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Marjorie Reynolds and Virginia Dare, the film included a full score written by Irving Berlin. The film introduced the (unexpected) hit “White Christmas.” The film’s number “Abraham” was performed in blackface as part of a “Minstrel Show” but after great controversy is usually omitted in the annual showing of the film. The stage production began at Broadway’s Studio 54 in 2013.

The Bodyguard fails to protect – the audience

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer BROADWAY AT THE PARAMOUNT THE BODYGUARD, THE MUSICAL PARAMOUNT THEATRE Through November 19 The Bodyguard is the musical based on the hit movie by the same name. Created as a vehicle for the music of the late Whitney Houston, the film was transferred to the stage in 2012. Expanding the musical library, the stage production gives the full versions of songs represented in the film as well as adding in other hits from the pop Diva. The musical is currently playing at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre starring the mega-pop star, Deborah Cox. The storyline tells the tale of Rachel Marron. Ms. Marron is currently one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. Making her film debut in the new movie “Queen of the Night,” Ms. Marron is up for several Oscar nominations, including the film’s hit song, “One Moment in Time.” When a stalker continuously sends her threatening letters, Frank Farmer is hired as the best of the best in security to protect Rachel, her son Fletcher, and her sister Nicki. Both women develop feelings for Frank, who is trying to keep all of them safe – at all costs.

Let me start off by saying I have never seen the movie. I am one of the few gay men of my generation that has not. While I admire the incomparable, undisputed talents of Ms. Whitney Houston, she’s never been in my top Diva list. That being said I had absolutely no knowledge of what was going to happen on stage, and therefore no expectations. My friend Vincent – Guide to All Things Whitney came with me to help educate me.

The show’s ensemble works hard.

Rachel’s back up dancers are as good as any contemporary rock star’s ought to be. The

women are played more for comic relief, but are just as good as their male counterparts.

Those playing Rachel’s more inner circle (i.e., the house security, assorted managers…) were not as noticeable. In fact, none of them really stood out, unfortunately.

Also, if the stalker (Jorge Paniagua) were anymore cardboard he’d be…cardboard. Maybe that was his choice to play it that way. Maybe that’s the way he was directed. Either way, it didn’t work and he was as menacing as Dr. Evil. The surge of music they played every time he was on stage was as subtle as Psycho’s screeching violins in pointing out “this is the villain.”

Even the title role of bodyguard, Frank Farmer (Judson Mills) was completely monotonous with only a few momentary exceptions.

There are really only two people to take note of from this production. Jasmin Richardson plays the (expanded from the movie)

role of Nicki Marron, Rachel’s sister. Nicki sings in a small lounge dreaming of having a bigger career, while harvesting resentment at her sister’s success. Ms. Richardson has a beautiful voice. Her singing at the seedy lounge is sultry, and we feel the heat.

Her stage presence is subtle but ever present and, apologies to Ms. Cox, her skilled tools showed what true theater talent is.

The star of the show playing Rachel Marron (except Saturday Matinee) is undoubtedly Ms. Deborah Cox. The show opens with Ms. Marron performing in concert, singing “Queen of the Night.” Deborah Cox delivers the goods. She is in her element by singing in a concert setting in front of a live audience. There is no doubt as to why Ms. Cox is a Grammy Award Nominee. Her voice is strong and she knows how to use it to its fullest abilities. The audience member sitting on the other side of me was so enraptured that he kept enthusiastically

calling out “Go Deborah” during the first few concert scenes of the musical. I had to lean over to whisper the reminder, “She’s supposed to be Rachel not Deborah.” I think that summarized the rest of Ms. Cox’s stage performance for the evening.

The show’s music has vastly expanded from the original film soundtrack. All songs are 100% from the Whitney Houston catalogue – with the exception of “Jesus Loves Me.” My friend Vincent – Guide to All Things Whitney was not alone, as several people around me were dancing in their seats and lip-singing (some louder than others) along to Ms. Houston’s incredible song list. The numbers chosen will not disappoint the Houston fans; all of her big hits are represented in full. In fact, stay for the final Encore as the cast erupts in a unified “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

At the show’s end I turned to Vincent – Guide To All Things Whitney and said, “Before you say anything, let me tell you what was added for the stage.” I listed off every scene that I thought would NOT be in what was one of the biggest film blockbusters of its time. He was amazed at my 96% accuracy (4% points of semantics). He asked how I knew the differences if I never saw the movie. “Because,” I answered, “those scenes were so cheesy, they should have been served with crackers.”

The musical is based on the hit 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. It was adapted for the stage in 2012 opening in December of the same year. Heather Hadley created the role of Rachel Marron on stage in London’s West End. Despite the musical receiving less than flattering reviews, the musical continued to play there for over a year, receiving four Olivier (UK equivalent to the American Tony) Award nominations. The Bodyguard has a tentative Broadway opening scheduled for some time in 2018.

A robust, energetic and rousing production of the musical, Newsies, which details the Newsboy Strike of 1899 against Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst’s newspapers, brings Issaquah audiences to their feet.

The very large cast is called upon to dance huge numbers in sync, including a major tap number at the top of the second act.

The real life story was that Pulitzer and Hearst and all the other papers of the day raised their rate for newsboy costs from 50 cents per hundred to 60 cents. The newsboys paid for papers and then had to sell as many as they could for as much as they could to get their money back and have money to live off of. That seemingly small cost increase was an extreme hardship to the army of children and, in an era of other large strikes, they were motivated to strike, too.

After a 1992 movie, composer Alan Menken, lyricist Jack Feldman, and book writer Harvey Fierstein created a musical which made its Broadway debut in 2012.

The national tour came to Seattle and Joey Barreiro starred as Jack Kelly, the charismatic newsboy leader who dreams of going west to Santa Fe. Barriero struts his stuff in this production as well and brings a full range of emoting to the starring role, providing a satisfying chemistry with local favorite Taylor Niemeyer as Katherine.

Niemeyer also gives it her all in a selfpossessed, sturdy portrait of a young woman reporter. She shows off her beautiful voice and also chimes in on the tap dancing in Act 2. The role is written nicely for the one female lead in a massively mas-

culine musical (try saying that three times fast), though it’s a desperately improbable one when she turns out to be Pulitzer’s daughter. The movie had no such “love interest” and the reporter was male. The musical writers obviously tried to find some way of making a leading woman fit into the story and making it into a love story.

But it’s easy to overlook any script weaknesses (including a scene with all the children of the richest families in NYC helping the poorest) when the deft orchestra swells (led by music director R.J. Tancioco) and the two-dozen dancers swing onto stage for another big number. The focus and energetic direction of Steve Tomkins and the agile (and sometimes faithful to the Broadway original) choreography by Katy Tabb keep

the production amped at full speed.

Christopher Mumaw’s surprisingly flexible sets move seamlessly from outdoor Bowery to indoor theater space and back again. Cynthia Savage’s costuming works well for poor urchins and wealthy mucks like Joseph Pulitzer (Greg Stone) alike.

Sound, designed and well-balanced by Brett Warwick, makes everyone completely heard. The one area of tech that seems fussy and overbearing is the lighting by Aaron Copp. The lighting changes so much during some songs that it seemed like it was supposed to be all about the lighting.

In addition to the big roles, a few smaller standouts deserve mention: Michael Krenning as a lame Crutchie is plucky and full of heart; Cherisse Martinelli is enormous

fun as a Pulitzer secretary (for a hot second); Ulyber Mangune and Davione Gordon show off their dancing; and Guthrie Greenwood Bettinger, the youngest Newsie, steals most of his scenes with great comic timing!

Fun for the whole family, this is great counter-holiday programming that still feels like a holiday!

anyone ask for? Teatro ZinZanni has moved to Marymoor Park, but the drive is worth it without hesitation. Parking is ample, and the tent is set up, insulated and welcoming.

The show is a revamping of their previous incarnation called “Love, Chaos & Dinner.” The tale is about a premier Diva – Madame ZinZanni – and her restaurant staff who find out at the last minute, that a prestigious restaurant critic is attending the show. Between “The Maestro” and his obsession with creating the perfect robot waitress, the hostess dominatrix searching for love, the security guy trying to find

something more, and any one of the various entertainers, the search for Love continues.

While some of the acts may seem familiar they are still just as enjoyable and breathtaking for the novice and frequent attendee alike. The “owner” of the restaurant (Ariana Savalas) doubles as a singer. Her voice is perfectly suited to cover the hits like “Perhaps” in a sultry fashion. Her svelte body adds to her sex appeal, which contributes to her persona and performance.

Elena Gatilova adds humor as a cleaner in the restaurant. When she is not adding comic relief with slapstick timing, she is showing off her aerial ballet skills. Hanging from a hoop on a rope, she twirls with great agility and grace high above the audience.

with perfectly controlled movements that slowly become graceful as she becomes more and more human. Yevgeniy Voronin is the unofficial host of the restaurant. His silent behavior is something reminiscent of Nosferatu as he moves without words leaving a strong presence as he skulks around the theatrical tent.

Joe De Paul* (who is also the show’s director) plays part of the restaurant staff that wants everything to go well. Part Master of Ceremonies and part comic, De Paul may be short in height but he makes up for it with the mountain of physical comedy he is capable of bringing to the stage. [*NOTE: Starting in January Mr. De Paul leaves and is replaced by Ron Campbell.]

and the female, prestigious food critic.

Their playful flirting creates warmth in the theatre among lovers and singles alike.

They finally get to perform together, by swinging together and on each other, from a trapeze hanging from the center of the tent.

It is Dominic Aillot that gives the “eleventh hour” performance. Playing the role of “chef” he shows his real talent towards the end of the night. While Harry Connick Jr’s version of “Feeling Good” plays over the speakers, Mr. Aillot leaps onto a pole with great agility and precise precision. He balances himself from all angles while moving up and down with perfect synchronicity.

His act is truly breathtaking and deserving of the standing ovation that the audience surrendered as reward.

The menu starts with an appetizer consisting of fresh ricotta cheese and roasted pumpkin crostini. There are the extra choices of breadbaskets or antipasto plates and other amuse-bouche plates that can be added for an additional charge. The evening’s soup is white bean and rosemary that is creamy and delicious. The main course is a choice of salmon fillet with fennel citrus salsa, or braised short ribs with a cabernet Demi-glaze and a cauliflower purée, or a harvest tagine for the vegetarian preferences. Whichever the choice it is bound to be delicious as it was created by the Chef Jason Wilson. Dessert is the “Madam ZinZanni,” a dense chocolate cake with a dark cherry ganache.

Teatro ZinZanni has moved from it’s previous, long-term location in Seattle’s Lower Queen Anne to it new location at King County’s Marymoor Park. While parking on the grounds is $15.00, there are ample spots to hold the Teatro tent’s fullest capacity. While only a short drive, the show is complete escapism and fun for all ages of the family. How can anything go wrong when the evening involves Love, Chaos & Dinner?

Perceptive BPM an emotionally relevant wrecking ball

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BPM Now playing Writer/director Robin Campillo’s (The Class) 2017 Cannes Film Festival Grand Jury prize winner BPM (Beats Per Minute) lives up to the hype. What could lazily be described as the Parisian flipside to David France’s Oscar-nominated How to Survive a Plague, this movie, which is not a documentary, is a complex, emotionally resonant piece of historical fiction that packs a pretty devastating wallop. Set in 1992, the film isn’t just about the birth of Act-Up in France, but also ends up being a social document chronicling the differing ways individuals banded together to combat the early days of the AIDS epidemic, forcing those holding the political and corporate purse strings to reevaluate their priorities even when they weren’t initially inclined to do so.

Mixing fact and fiction, Campillo’s story follows Nathan (Arnaud Valois), a youngster who isn’t particularly politically active but finds himself infatuated with outspoken activist Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart). He’s one of the more radical members of the Act-Up movement, constantly pushing things further than the group’s leaders

Thibault (Antoine Reinartz) and Sophie (Adèle Haenel) are often comfortable with.

He has his reasons, and they’re as urgent as they are personal, Sean obsessed with changing the status quo so politicians have to get more involved in the fight against HIV and so drug companies will have to stop dragging their feet in bringing new treatments to market.

The strength of Campillo’s epic drama is the way it is able to balance all its many storylines with such deft, introspective simplicity. Act-Up is working overtime to force pharmaceutical giant Melton-Pharm to publicly release their test results as it pertains to AIDS and HIV, knowing if they do so this insight into the disease could help medical professionals treat the afflicted better than they currently are able to while at the same time forcing politicians to recognize just how bad this growing epidemic is. At the same time all this is happening, Nathan and Sean slowly fall in love, while others in the movement, most notably Sophie, magnificently portrayed by Haenel, face their own personal travails.

Campillo doesn’t shortchange any facet of his story. While the procedural pieces chronicling the fight against Melton-Pharm is thrilling, even better are a series of debates that get more engrossing, and more emotionally heated, as the film progresses. At

the same time, Nathan sees his worldview expanded in ways he never thought possible, and whether sweating alongside Sean on a neon-lit dance floor, or coming to grips with the realities of the disease as he watches the newfound love of his life slowly waste away into a shell of his formerly virile self, this personal tale is juxtaposed beautifully with the larger, more documentary-like narrative that surrounds it.

Biscayart gives one of the best performances of 2017. Full of life, overflowing in energy and enthusiasm, he showcases AIDS’s assault against Sean’s body and soul with a selflessly raw ferocity that’s oftentimes chilling. The actors share spectacular chemistry, the pair oozing a form of sexual camaraderie that’s superb. Biscayart layers his portrayal with moments of humor that are just as apt to erupt into fiery anger as they are to open up to emotional despair, the two lovers sharing a final moment that ripped my heart to pieces with minimalistic urgency. As already stated, Haenel is also excellent, Sophie’s journey nearly as fulfilling and as mesmeric as Nathan’s and Sean’s also proves to be.

I could have done without Arnaud Rebotini’s (Eastern Boys) intrusive score, and I can’t help but feel a key sex scene between Valois and Biscayart would have played a heck of a lot better without his

music accompanying the moment. The film’s opening flashback, while ultimately a moderately powerful introduction to the larger story these characters are all a part of, doesn’t begin all that organically, and as such it took me a little while to get emotionally involved in what was going on and why I should care if Nathan ends up becoming a part of the Act-Up movement.

These prove to be minor annoyances more than they do anything else. Working with collaborator Philippe Mangeot (Summer Nights), Campillo’s script adroitly explores this time and place in history with masterfully meditative resilience. No punches are pulled, and these characters are hardly saints, their collective sins as readily apparent as their otherwise more laudably selfless attributes undeniably prove to be. All of which augments the emotional components considerably, and by the time things build to their destructively complex conclusion euphoria and tragedy coexist with a naturalistic poise that’s glorious. BPM (Beats Per Minute) wrecked me something fierce, Campillo’s latest a piece of historical fiction that’s just as relevant today as it ever was a quarter-century ago.

Catching up with Del Shores and Emerson Collins on A Very Sordid Wedding at TWIST 2017

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer A VERY SORDID WEDDING Now available on DVD and VOD It was 1999 when Sordid Lives was a surprise hit for filmgoers with an all-star cast that included Bonnie Bedelia, Beth Grant, Ann Walker, Kirk Geiger, Leslie Jordan and Olivia Newton-John. In 2007, it spawned a prequel TV series on LOGO that added Caroline Rhea and Rue McClanahan to the cast. In the much-anticipated sequel to the film, A Very Sordid Wedding, promises a wedding in the tiny Texas town that Sordid Lives was set in. TWIST: Seattle Queer Film Festival screened the film on October 14 with creator and director, Del Shores, along with producer and actor, Emerson Collins in attendance. As I did with their other film, Southern Baptist Sissies, I had a chance to chat with them after the screening.

MK Scott: Just saw the film, A Very Sordid Wedding, and it was wonderful. And so what took so long for the Sordid Lives series to come to a close?

Del Shores: Well, I had other things to do to. I was busy with other projects, but I was so happy to return to it. It was great.

It was like a family reunion for all of us.

We love each other. And it was great to get together. And I’m glad it came out well, you know what I mean? You never know. I feel good about this one.

MK: And Emerson, you’re back again, playing a very different character. It’s more of a serious character. And you’re all covered with tattoos and so forth. And also you actually got to be pretty serious. Tell me a little bit about that experience.

Emerson Collins: Well, I mean, it was amazing, you know, this sort of mask from mask serial killer fantasy, if you will, but it’s a big dramatic difference from what I did with Southern B Sissies, that’s what most people are familiar with, and the opportunity to work with somebody at the genius level of what Leslie Jordan can do on screen and have all of my scenes be with him with this incredible character that Del created. It was one of the most exciting things I’ve gotten to do thus far. And, you sort of, just sort of go into a scene like that and hold your own with someone like Leslie. It’s an absolute blast. 48 hours for the tattoos. Hardcore.

MK: That was my question, how was it working with Leslie?

Emerson: He’s a genius. At this point I’m fortunate because now we’ve been working together for a decade, so it’s truly exciting. There isn’t a fear that it would be if someone wasn’t talented. He lives down the street from me in West Hollywood, and drives by in his convertible, and this is what I hear: “Hey, sissy!” as he drives by.

MK: And, then also Beth Grant is not in this particular series, and she’s Sissie, of course. Well, I thought Dale Dickey’s resemblance and her experience was just uncanny and I thought she was great.

Del: You know, Dale Dickey and I had worked together 15 times. This is our 15th time together. And I always say she’s truly

one of our national treasures as an actress.

And she is such a good human being. We love her dearly. We just spent some time with her in Knoxville, her hometown. We did a premiere of the movie there, a Knoxville premiere. And it was great. That character is very near and dear to my heart because it’s based on my real life. So she just nailed it.

MK: And where did you find Kirk Gieger? I haven’t seen him on screen in years.

Del: Yeah, you know, Kirk and I kept in touch with each other. And he lives out in Indio, closer to Palm Springs, and I called him and I said, “Hey, you want to do it again?” And he said absolutely.

MK: Tell me a bit about what is next for you.

Del: We’re doing a series. We’ve been developing a series for the past year and just going to put it all together and hoping to find a home for it in shooting 2018. We’re really excited about it.

MK: And are you still doing the “People’s Couch”?

Emerson: No, that’s done. Bravo said get off the couch and get to work. It was an amazing experience. It’s going to be a really special thing. We did Four Seasons, 57 episodes, we were still shooting the “People’s Couch” while we were producing this movie in Canada. So going back and forth. It’s a princess problem. But it’s really special, and the fans of that show were really great. Airports, everywhere, we met people who loved it. It’s sort of a family experience of watching TV together.

MK: I got a chance to see your work in the last couple of years. I was in San Francisco and they did a production, I think it was the New something …

Del: The New Conservatory Theatre.

MK: They did Yellow.

Del: They just did Sordid Lives.

MK: I’ve been down there and I saw Yellow. So that was quite interesting Del: A little departure for me. A little more dramatic.

MK: It was quite dramatic.

Del: I love that play.

MK: Thank you so much. Always a pleasure.

Energetically incoherent Justice League charmingly heroic

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer JUSTICE LEAGUE Now playing After the death of Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill) at the hands of Doomsday, both Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) are well aware the Earth is in jeopardy in a way it never has been before. With signs of an invasion everywhere, the two heroes attempt to find other individuals with special abilities to help protect humanity now that the Man of Steel is gone. The three they’re focused on are Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and Victor Stone (Ray Fisher), each possessing the sort of skills that should be able to help Bruce and Diana hold back the forces of evil.

But an invasion isn’t just forthcoming, it’s already begun. The planet destroyer Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) has descended from the interstellar unknown and laid waste to both the hidden island of Themyscira and the lost underwater city of Atlantis in search of powerful artifacts known as “Mother Boxes,” a third one buried in the bowels of the earth by mankind 5,000 years ago the last remaining key that will help this demon cover the world in fire and darkness. With Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) able to send her daughter a message signaling the fight for the planet’s survival has commenced, it becomes clear to Diana that as strong as Bruce, Barry, Arthur, Victor and she herself are, they might not be enough to stop Steppenwolf.

Justice League is a mess; there’s no denying that. With director Zack Snyder having to step away from the production after a horrible family tragedy and Joss

Whedon brought in to tidy up the script, handle reshoots of some key scenes and oversee the editing process, there is a notable tonal disconnect throughout that’s rather obvious. It’s hard to know where the filmmaker responsible for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice sees his influence on things begin and the guy known for creating “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and crafting The Avengers has his end, and while Snyder gets sole directorial credit it’s hard not to imagine this version of the story is far removed from the one he likely originally imagined.

All of which makes it surprising things work out nearly as well as they do. While disjointed and more than a little structurally incoherent, gosh darn it all if Justice League doesn’t end up proving to be a heck of a lot more fun than it has any right to be.

Moving at a breakneck pace, Whedon and fellow screenwriter Chris Terrio (Argo), working from a story initially conceived

by Terrio and Snyder, assemble their team of heroes quickly, eschewing much in the way of narrative excess in order to get to the action sooner rather than later. They gloss over the backstory of the Mother Boxes as well as the chaos and carnage caused

by Steppenwolf’s first visit to Earth 5,000 years in the past, hoping audiences don’t really notice they aren’t spending a lot of times explaining anything that is happening. The pair also introduce their new heroes in speedy shorthand, thinking that the talents of Miller, Momoa and Fisher will be enough to make them memorable and worth caring about all by themselves.

For the most part this plan succeeds.

Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, gets the shortest straw, which is something of a shame as his role in seeing Steppenwolf’s plans fail is an important one. Arthur Curry, a.k.a.

Aquaman, fairs a lot better, and considering his solo adventure is set to hit theatres in December of 2018 it’s hardly surprising his underwater world of Atlantis is the most fully realized new location in the movie outside of Themyscira, already introduced this past summer in the box office smash Wonder Woman. As for Barry Allen, a.k.a.

The Flash, he’s given the most to do, a subplot involving his wrongfully incarcerated father Henry (Billy Crudup) and the youngster’s general inability to fit in with others giving him an idiosyncratic edge that’s consistently engaging.

Even so, Miller, Momoa and Fisher all make suitably solid impressions, and say what you will about Snyder’s directorial style his eye for casting these important roles is second to none Each manages to craft distinct characterizations that are separate from any of their cast mates yet still fits in beautifully with the idea that each of them must put their differences aside in order to become a crime-fighting team unlike any other the world has ever seen before. Miller, in particular, steals scenes right out from underneath his costars with charismatic ease, adding a layer of humor and warmth to the proceedings that is frankly wonderful.

But this whole adventure feels vigorous and welcoming in a way that neither Man of Steel nor Batman v Superman ever did.

It’s clear that things have shifted, the production even going so far as to tug at the emotional nostalgia cord, composer Danny Elfman crafting a wonderfully boisterous score that uses John Williams’ Superman theme as well as Hans Zimmer and Tom Holkenborg’s “Is She With You?” Wonder Woman track to magnificent effect. Heck, he even gets to throw his own Batman theme into the mix as well, in some ways

suggesting this incarnation of The Dark Knight is the same one Tim Burton introduced in 1989, thus making Justice League in some ways more of an unintentional sequel to it than it is to Snyder’s Batman v Superman.

These are all conscious decisions made by both the studio and the filmmakers, I’m certain, and they frequently work. By keeping things energetic and fun, by allowing the cast to look and appear as if they’re having a terrific time making the film, all of this ends up having quite the effect upon an audience. It’s hard to care that little of the plot makes any real sense, or that Steppenwolf, all of the talented Hinds’ belligerent bellicose bluster notwithstanding, is another in a long line of underwhelming bad guys these comic book adventures, whether they be DC or Marvel, always seem to be putting front and center. Most of this shockingly doesn’t matter, the pure unadulterated esprit de corps that’s on display somehow helping to gloss over this production’s more than obvious (and ample) shortcomings.

Who knows where things go next, or if the combination of Wonder Woman and to a lesser degree Justice League signals that DC and Warner Bros have finally figured out what it is they are doing and that future adventures featuring these heroes will meet with success. But even with a number of reservations, and even though I haven’t the first clue who, Snyder or Whedon, should get the majority of the credit, dang it all if I didn’t find watching Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg joining forces to be a rollicking, freewheeling blast, and you don’t even need to tie me up with the Lasso of Hestia for me to admit it.

Catching up with Broadway, TV star, and musician, Reeve Carney at Steamposium 2017

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer Six years ago, Reeve Carney had just started out on Broadway in title role of the much-talked about Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical with the sensational score

by Bono with The Edge which was originally directed by Julie Taymor (The Lion King). The show was plagued with a highbudget and the dangerous aerial stunts that even injured a stunt man. In August 2011, I was lucky enough to attend and review Spider-Man and the music and the leading man was what made the show. I met Reeve Carney after the show and he was very gracious. I later learned that his band, Carney, had performed as part of the pit orchestra for the show. I also learned that he is the grand-nephew of TV legend, Art Carney (“The Honeymooners”). In recent years, Carney left Broadway for the starring role of omnisexual, Dorian Gray on Showtime’s Penny Dreadful (2014-16) and last year as Riff-Raff in the FOX TV remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. So, it was a delight to catch up with Reeve at Steamposium 2017 (also known as Steampunk-Con) at Seattle’s Bell Harbor Conference center on October 28.

MK Scott: Okay. Reeve, you are known as the character of Dorian Gray for three seasons of “Penny Dreadful.” But I had a chance to meet you about six years ago.

You were starring on Broadway as Peter Parker is Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

So you ended up doing that for a couple more years after that?

Reeve Carney: Yeah, yeah. I was there until I got this job. So this is what – the only thing that could take me away from a job that fun – is [he knocks wood] something that ended up being for three years.

guess what? We’re going to go meet him!

Reeve: Awesome! I’m glad he was excited.

MK: So, unfortunately, it only lasted for three seasons.

Reeve: Yeah, it would’ve been, I mean, you could, we had so much fun at that show.

MK: Is this something that you would’ve wanted to continue?

Reeve: I would’ve been happy for it to.

Yeah. I mean, I think it ended in a way that made a lot of sense and felt complete, so I understand why that happened. It certainly

MK: Broadway bound?

Reeve: I hope so. It looks like it. That’s what they’re saying. Certainly that would be the goal.

MK: So you also had a band, Carney. Is that something you’re still working on?

Reeve: Well, I put out an album last year, a solo album, just under my name, Reeve Carney. And I’d love to collaborate more with the members of Carney, and my brother, and in any other formats. Because actually my brother and I are talking about working with our sister in some other formation of some other group, but it’s just hard to find the time because we’re all traveling so much in different places that that’s the main reason we hadn’t been a functioning band for a while. But I’m hoping that that comes back around in some forum.

MK: You’ve had your chance to do a little bit of TV and film. What else is on your horizon?

than that. “Orange is the New Black,” what is that, in their sixth, seventh season, or something crazy?

MK: That’s true. Actually, speaking of that, I had just read and didn’t realize that you played Riff Raff in the Rocky Horror on Fox last year.

Reeve: That was so much fun.

MK: With our good friend Laverne Cox who I’ve interviewed many times.

Reeve: She’s from New York, too. East Village, I think, originally … She’s very much a New Yorker.

MK: What was that experience like?

Reeve: Probably the most fun I’ve ever had because it was set up that way. It was set up to be this larger than life, insane thing, and Kenny Ortega just really made it that way with the cast. It was very communal. It just felt like a community of people having fun together.

MK: Aren’t you glad that it wasn’t live?

Reeve: Oh, yes. Well, not only for the fact for that crazy stuff that I had to do, that would’ve been tough. But I think that particular film, I mean, obviously it works onstage, but I don’t know, it would be hard to film that. I think that might be hard to translate a live stage version of that film without doing it the way that the original film was made, even though the film wasn’t the first. I know that there was a Rocky Horror Show first, but I don’t know how you capture that. So I think it was a wise decision that they decided to film it the way they did.

MK: Like I said, I can’t wait to see you with what’s going on with Hadestown.

Reeve: Oh, thanks. Yeah. And Patrick Page, actually who played the Green Goblin in Spider-Man as Hades.

MK: Oh, my god!

Reeve: In the show, T.V. Carpio – I don’t know, do you remember? – she ended up playing Arachne ultimately in Spider-Man and she is playing Ruisi in this. And it’s totally unrelated. This was sort of us making suggestions when we knew they were looking for someone. And the three of us are doing another show together. It’s just pretty cool.

MK: It was so good to see you.

Reeve: You, too.

MK: Well, I know the character was quite complex.....

Reeve: Yeah, I think … I guess most characters are probably pretty complex. But it was definitely fun to delve in to all the different aspects of what make up Dorian Gray.

MK: And you got to kiss Josh Hartlett?

Reeve: I did. I got to kiss a lot of people.

[Laugh] He was the resident addict, I guess – no, not quite that. He was just very curious.

MK: And, also a little bit about, tell me a little bit more about the, I know that he was, for three seasons, unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to see it.

Reeve: Oh, you’ve got to watch it on Netflix now!

MK: But Showtime started this. My fiancé just started watching this on Netflix, and he said, you know, I really like this character of Dorian Gray, and I said: Well,

would be cool to, I mean, there’s sort of like a never-ending storyline when doing a character like Dorian Gray, you know, you could take it so many places.

MK: Now, what was the difference between being onstage versus being in front of the camera?

Reeve: Oh, I think being in front of the camera you have the option to focus more on naturalism. And everything happ – you know, tends to be a lot smaller, especially dramatic film as opposed to certain types of comedy. But the stage has to be more broad, you know, to tell the story. I find that I’m more, I don’t know if I would say I’m more naturally inclined to be in film and TV – in a way I think that might be true, but I also spend more time playing music onstage. I am quite comfortable on the stage. So I do well being onstage. I’m working on something now, actually, in Edmonton, Alberta.

Risibly tedious Daddy’s Home 2 a laughless slog

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer DADDY’S HOME 2 Now playing It’s possible that Daddy’s Home 2 is one of the more blatantly rancid and painfully ugly comedies I’ve ever had the displeasure to sit through. Doubling down on the more risible aspects of the otherwise inoffensive, moderately amusing yet instantly forgettable 2015 first film, returning director Sean Anders (We’re the Millers) and the rest of his creative team have delivered a sequel that’s pretty close to unwatchable. Trading in disgustingly tired and offensive gender stereotypes that only feel more egregious in light of current cultural events, filled with childish behavior by its two leads that is trite and obnoxious in a way that is not remotely amusing, this film comes amazingly close to being a disaster. It just isn’t good, and for the life of me I can’t begin to imagine just how terrible a third entry in this series would prove to be if this second one ends up being a hit which by all appearances it is sadly almost certain to be.

After ironing out their differences and working overtime to be the best pair of codads they can be, Brad (Will Ferrell) and Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) have done a fine job becoming the type of men they feel their large cadre of children can be proud of. Both are determined to have the best

Christmas celebration ever, deciding that instead of the children having to commute back and forth from one man’s home to the other, the entire clan will make merry together as one gigantic unit. To that end, Brad and Dusty have invited their own fathers, the former’s touchy-feely pop Don (John Lithgow) and the latter’s wild-eyed bad boy of a dad Kurt (Mel Gibson), to be a part of the festivities, the two older gentlemen flying into town to be with their children and grandchildren for the holiday.

Things do not go as planned. Egged on a little by Kurt, Dusty starts trying to prove once again he’s the alpha male. Not wanting to appear intimidated, Brad follows suit. Once again, the two men start trying to one-up one another by being as boorishly masculine as they can be while their children look upon them with a mixture of disgust and embarrassment. Even Brad’s wife Sara (Linda Cardellini) and Dusty’s new bride Karen (Alessandra Ambrosio) are mortified by their behavior, both women quickly coming to their wit’s end as they try to deal with all the chaos and carnage their husbands are leaving in their wake as Christmas Day approaches.

Why do we have yet another comedy where the idea of males being affectionate or showing emotion is supposed to be funny? Why are we playing up so many unctuous gender stereotypes that proclaim anything even slightly feminine is to be looked down upon or ridiculed? Why is it

supposed to be cute that forty-something man-children can behave like such bratty imbeciles? Why are the women in this film treated even worse this second time around than they were the first, the immensely talented Cardellini once again forced to deliver thankless bits of dialogue that are as embarrassing as they are juvenile? Why does so much of this movie assume its audience is a bunch of morons who need to be continually pandered to, never allowing for anything to happen that doesn’t feel borrowed or stolen from other popular holiday comedies like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation or A Christmas Story?

I’ve always responded to Ferrell and Wahlberg as a comedic team, but they’re really starting to wear out their welcome with this travesty. Their performances grate in a way that grows tiresome as the film progresses. Even for a silly, peopledoing-stupid-things-cluelessly comedy, the depths this one descends to are so overtly moronic putting up with either man for all 100 minutes of the running time is practically impossible. They’re both so tediously insufferable their performances almost make me regret giving a good review to The Other Guys and a pleasantly passable one to the first Daddy’s Home. I was that frustrated and dissatisfied by all that I was sitting there witnessing, and if only for the fact I’ve never walked out of a movie, it’s a wonder I sat in the theatre all the way until the end.

Gibson is arguably the lone bright spot, the only one who underplays his role, refusing to mug for the camera, the actor allowing laughs to spring forth far more organically than they otherwise have any right to. But his appearance in what is being billed as a comedy fit for the whole family brings up a number of additional issues that I haven’t the first clue as the best way to address. He’s a problematic presence inside the motion picture for reasons that have nothing to do with the movie’s overall mediocrity and everything to do with a person’s ability to separate art from the artist, and while I was just fine watching Gibson in recent efforts like Blood Father and The Expendables 3 I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to having a heck of a time trying to feel comfortable with his presence here.

Granted, the movie being so unrelentingly terrible eases that burden somewhat, Anders and his team of screenwriters manufacturing a sequel that isn’t just content to sit at the bottom of the entertainment barrel but actually one that frequently digs even deeper into dirt seemingly in an attempt to see just how low it can go. Daddy’s Home 2 is a lump of seasonal coal delivered into the multiplex with all the pomp and circumstance of a slap to the face, this holidaythemed comedy a laughless slog better left unwatched.

Celebrating 43 Years!

Moving Last Flag Flying a masterful and insightfully meditative wonder

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer LAST FLAG FLYING Now playing Thirty years after they served together during the Vietnam War, onetime Navy Corpsman Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell) and former Marine Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) and Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) are unexpectedly reunited. Doc has sought these two men out, compelled to find them in the wake of an unspeakable tragedy he isn’t certain he can face on his own. You see, his only son is dead. He was a Marine fighting in Iraq and the military is preparing to bury him with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Doc wants Sal and Richard to accompany him as he goes on a journey to lay his boy to rest, hoping that the past they shared will be enough to convince them to assist in this heartrending endeavor.

More a spiritual sequel to Hal Ashby’s 1973 classic The Last Detail starring Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid and the late Otis Young than it is a direct continuation, Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying is a movingly meditative drama full of heartbreaking insight and cathartic truth I found extraordinary. It is a story of service and friendship that transcends the simple story

at its center to become something deeply personal and emotionally affecting, the level of introspective honesty on display throughout altogether staggering. This movie moved me to tears while in the same breath it had me laughing out loud, everything building to a stunningly personal denouement that left me speechless.

Working with author Darryl Ponicsan to craft the screenplay, Linklater doesn’t try to obfuscate any of this story’s more intimate particulars. Instead, things are purposefully straightforward right from the jump. Doc needs help. He shares a history with Sal and Richard they’d rather not talk about but one that both men still refuse to run away from. Thirty years on, they still don’t know what they went to Vietnam to fight for. Now, in 2003, they don’t know why Doc’s son was in Iraq or what it was he laid down his life to protect. Yet all of them refuse to bend and they have no desire to break. They will do what is right, selflessly continuing to serve their country and their fellow soldiers best they know how even if their own days of military service are long behind them.

Equal parts funny, perceptive, heartbreaking and emotional, Linklater and Ponicsan have no wish to preach even if their opinions as to the validity of these two wars aren’t ever in doubt. Instead, they want to examine these men, long to get inside their heads and figure out what it is

that continues to propel them forward even if the ghosts of the past and tragedies of the present conspire to rip them to shreds. The trio’s conversations sparkle with an introspective truth that is frequently startling, while at the same time also showcases a cheery comradeship that even the passage of three decades of life as strangers hasn’t been able to blunt.

Unsurprisingly, this is a major showcase for the three actors. Cranston is magnificent, his epically exuberant performance a verbose cavalry charge of truth and consequence that’s a consistent marvel. He’s matched by Fishburne, the two showcasing a Mutt and Jeff give and take that’s dazzling. These men may have gone their separate ways after they left the Marines, they may have pursued different agendas and goals in order to dull the painful memories of the mistakes they might have made, but that doesn’t mean they still don’t know one another better and more intimately than either would care to admit. Bravely going into interior places filled with darkness, pain and guilt, Cranston and Fishburne are extraordinary, and I could have watched an additional two hours of Sal and Richard on the road back home after they’ve finished assisting Doc in his mournful task.

Carell might be even better. Doc spends much of the movie playing things close to the vest, containing his grief inside as the trio makes the slow trek to bury his

boy with the respect and the dignity he deserves. It’s a thoughtful portrait, his character having a complicated backstory that includes the man overcoming a dark cloud of disgrace born from his time with Sal and Richard in Vietnam and becoming a valued and respective member of his community.

Carell’s eyes speak volumes, the emotions flowing out of the actor sending chills up and down my spine on more than one occasion, and even just a simple moment where Doc must decide whether or not to bury his son in his military dress or in civilian attire bringing me to tears with winsome grace.

Linklater structures his film in much the same manner he did his classic trilogy of Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, absolutely unafraid to showcase a dialogue-driven drama where ideas are discussed with complex intelligence.

He and Ponicsan find humor in the most unlikely of places yet at the same time never belittle or make light of the darker facets of the story they are telling. They allow for moments of humanity to break through in ways that are startling, gifting young actor J. Quinton Johnson with a key supporting role as a soldier tasked with assisting in the transport of the body that’s far more emotionally resonant than I initially imagined it was going to be. Last Flag Flying is a masterful motion picture, watching it unfold for the first time a pleasurably moving joy I’ll treasure for many years to come.
