The Bold and the beautiful: Mary Lambert is bringing sweet new music to The Crocodile

The Grammy-nominated artist has spent the past few years living on the opposite coast with her partner, fellow musician Michelle Chamuel, but she’s still an Emerald City girl at heart, right down to the cup of Vivace coffee she treats herself to whenever she returns to her hometown. Speaking of which, the “Same Love” singer and cowriter is headed back shortly to this neck of the woods, as part of her “Everybody is a Babe Tour” that celebrates the recent release of her newest recording, an EP titled Bold. If you missed Lambert performing at the Pride festivities in June, here’s a chance to see the LGBT musician in a much more intimate setting, The Crocodile on October 29. I caught up with Lambert this week to chat about the upcoming tour, her new music and her favorite Seattle spots. Here’s what she had to say to Seattle Gay News.

Albert Rodriguez: You performed here just a few months ago at Pride. Will the upcoming show be similar, or much different, than what we saw this summer?

Mary Lambert: At Pride, that set was about a half-hour and luckily for me this set is going to be about 90 minutes, so it’s going to be like a super set. I have a lot planned and Ebo Barton will be opening up the night with a set of their work, so I feel lucky to have them. Mal Blum is my supporting act and they’re just as amazing. I’m excited for the audience. I’m actually jealous that I don’t get to watch my own show.

That sounds really conceited. [Laughs] Rodriguez: Your new album is called Bold. Is it a reflection of LGBT people’s courage, or your own experience being part of the LGBT community? Or, are you making some kind of statement to the world?

Lambert: It’s kind of all encompassing.

I feel like that’s included in the umbrella of what it symbolizes to me, but I think initially the feeling was in relation to being independent after leaving my record label and management. It was sort of like taking hold of my art and my business and my schedule and what I was working on project-wise. I was really empowered and “bold” felt like an all encompassing term for that, but I think it also means to be unabashedly yourself, to be unabashedly gay and bi-polar; you have to be bold in order to live that way. So I feel like I live boldly and I wanted to have the message, or the branding, around the EP to reflect that.

Rodriguez: How many songs from Bold do you think you’ll include in your performance at The Crocodile?

Lambert: Most of them, I think everything but the remixes. In Seattle, I’m particularly excited because my mom is going to join me on stage for a duet, which is really special. I’ve never sung in public with my mom before.

Rodriguez: And she appears on your album as a guest vocalist, right?

Lambert: Yes, she actually wrote the song that she appears in (“Love is Love”).

Rodriguez: I loved the video for the EP’s first single, “Know Your Name,” which features Sara Ramirez, who we know from “Grey’s Anatomy.” How long

did that video take to make, and how much fun did you have putting it together?

Lambert: I was luckily able to finance it through Kickstarter. I think from the beginning, its inception, to the actual release was probably about three months.

But the actual day of shooting was a fifteenhour day.

Rodriguez: At The Crocodile, will you be playing with a full band, or backup singers – what’s the set up going to be like?

Lambert: I will have my band that’s from Seattle. Heather Thomas is my drummer. She has her own projects and she’s also in a band called General Mojo. Jonah Cohen is my bassist and he’s in a band called Honcho Poncho. And, Tim Mendonsa recently moved to New York, but he was also Seattle-based. That’s my band; they’re like my best friends and I feel really lucky that I get to tour with them and bring them on stage and share these experiences.

I feel like I’ve interacted with a lot of my peers that don’t tend to have as much control of how they tour, or there are people making decisions for them. So being able to have my best friends tour with me is something I value deeply.

Rodriguez: How long does it take you to prepare for a tour, to rehearse the songs and lock down the arrangements?

Lambert: We sort of do a lot of remote rehearsals, where I’m talking about concepts over the phone or email, but my band has already been playing these songs for a while. Some of the songs on Bold are older songs, so the rehearsal aspect isn’t that intense, it’s more the logistics of the tour, like “Where are we going to stay?” and “How are we going to travel?” and “What is everyone’s comfort level?” because my main priority is that everyone has fun. If you’re not having fun, then what’s the fucking point?

Rodriguez: So how will you travel and have fun?

Lambert: We’re going to go camping for part of the tour. [Laughs] So I got a fun camper-trailer and I picked out the camping spots we’ll go to. We’re staying in some fun Airbnb’s and we’re going to roast marshmallows.

Rodriguez: Where’s the most common place you get recognized?

Lambert: I don’t know that I get recognized a lot. When it happens, it’s very special because I’m in my usual getup – I’m usually in sweats and no makeup, and that’s kind of my jam. When I am recognized it’s because my hair is done and I’m wearing red lipstick, or something. In Seattle, it’s much more frequent than other parts of the world, which makes me feel like a local celebrity. [Laughs] Rodriguez: Will you be coming back to Seattle for the holidays, for Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Lambert: I don’t think so. I now live in Massachusetts, so I’ll either be there or visiting family elsewhere.

Rodriguez: You’ve been living on the East Coast for a few years. How do you describe Seattle to the people where you live?

Lambert: There’s a lot of similarities. I don’t live in Boston, I live about two hours west, which I feel is culturally very similar to Seattle, in that it’s very liberal. Where I live is kind of like the lesbian mecca, so it just feels great to be with my people. I have my Subaru in the lesbian mecca; I just feel right at home. To me, Seattle is like...um, at one point I called it America’s best kept secret because everybody had this belief that it rained there all the time and it was terrible, but I think people are starting to catch on that it’s just a lie we tell. It is gray a lot, but in the summer months there’s nothing more beautiful than Seattle in the summertime.

Rodriguez: Whenever you come back to Seattle, what are the places you always go to? What are your Seattle haunts?

Lambert: I always go to Vivace on the Hill. I love Cafe Flora, Local 360, Bathtub Gin & Co. in Belltown. I’m such a foodie and cocktail lover, so anytime I go back I’m like “What’s new?” “What are people excited about?”

Rodriguez: Because your concert takes place a couple of days before Halloween, are you encouraging fans to come dressed in costume?

Lambert: My God, I hadn’t thought of that! I want people to come as they are, however they want to be. It’s an open costume policy. [Laughs]

Arcade Fire burns bright at Key Arena

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer ARCADE FIRE THE INFINITE CONTENT TOUR KEY ARENA October 15 Never can it be said that Arcade Fire doesn’t know how to make an entrance.

They’ve come a long way since the runaway success of their debut album Funeral.

Some may recall a Paramount show in September 2005 memorable for its loosely orchestrated chaos: multiple smartly dressed musicians banging multiple instruments, moving through the crowd, perching on monitors, randomly placed thrift store lamps dotting the stage. Twelve years ago Arcade Fire’s creativity and presentation seemed at a peak, the sold out show a welldeserved but unusually meteoric rise for a new band. Little did anyone suspect how far they would go or that they’d be playing arenas before you could say “Grammy Award.”

For Sunday evening’s Key Arena appearance, Arcade Fire entered from the wings like the heavyweight, 24-andcounting award-winners they are. The inthe-round stage was set up as a boxing ring with wraparound video screens facing all sides so that every seat truly was a good one. Fake late night Everything Now advertisements played on a loop pre-show. A sports-like announcer introduced the band “Weighing in at a collective 2100 pounds” and off they trotted through the audience, climbing through the ropes into the ring to open with “Everything Now.” The Infinite Content tour and current release Everything Now thematically reflect on living in a fractured, disenfranchised, consumption-obsessed world.

Ironically, Arcade Fire can’t seem to make any kind of music other than the cathartic, anthemic variety, even in times of despair and uncertainty, and especially when playing live. Subtle disco influences paired with driving percussion and the plaintive, expressive vocals of Win Butler conveyed an urgency and hope to the new songs: the mood was one of cutting loose, having fun despite what ugliness may be going on in the outside world. Charging through over two hours of some of their best tracks across all albums, fans were treated to a heavy dose of Funeral-era songs such as “Rebellion (Lies),” “Neighborhood #1,” “Haiti,” “Neighborhood #3” as well as “Here Comes the Night Time,” “No Cars Go,” “Neon Bible” and “The Suburbs” from their second and third releases.

continued from cover inspired by Hillary Clinton’s concession speech, has become an empowering message that has resonated with listeners around the world. [Fair] has performed her song at Lincoln Center and has won numerous awards for both her violin playing and songwriting.”

The concert song list is full of messages of empowerment and essentially social justice. “Quiet” by MILCK is about not being quiet (“I can’t keep quiet no no no no”).

Fired Up! is by Holly Near (“Children need schools more than they need jails, That’s where our society fails”). A South African freedom song is entitled “We Shall Not Give Up the Fight.”

A wonderful segment of the second act, just before you’ll get to hear “To All the Little Girls,” is a set of songs (including the South African freedom song) sung by Northwest Girlchoir. They have lasted 45 years and empowered and inspired thousands of girls and young women in our region. They report that over 250 girls and young women, grades 1-12, participate in

Arcade Fire’s more recent electronic leanings came through on stellar tracks from Reflektor, including the title track.

David Bowie shared vocals on the original, and his image flashed in tribute on the wraparound screens during the song’s crescendo. (Bowie was an early champion of Arcade Fire and joked with the band before recording “Reflektor” that if they didn’t hurry and release it, he would steal it.) Bowie’s mentorship is palpable in the band’s progression; they began in 2001 when several members were barely in their 20s, but

the Choir. The oldest groups of the Choir, those in middle and high school, perform with the Women’s Chorus.

Dozens of self-possessed and welldirected girls line the stage and sides of the auditorium and vigorously sing their set.

They also participate in most of the rest of the songs in the second act. Dressed in long black dresses, they look similarly professional to their “sparkly” clad women singer compatriots.

One of the Girlchoir members took the solo on “To All the Little Girls” each night of the first weekend. It must be so exciting for them to be able to sing with the young composer, Isolde Fair, this weekend!

Soloists for the Women’s Chorus, Katy Ardans, Tara Street, April Cook, and guest artist Beth Ann Bonnecroy, all sounded terrific. The Chorus is full of very talented singers!

The evening was uplifting and invigorating and included a recording of Maya Angelou speaking the words to her poem, “Still I Rise,” and then followed by the song, “Still I Rise,” by Rosephanye Powell, which is a rousing choral anthem that you can’t help but clap to and feel energized by.

by virtue of their capacity to push their own limits and musical boundaries their last two records are possibly their most accomplished since Funeral. For “Electric Blue” a blue-pleather jumpsuited Regine Chassagne embraced her inner new wave goddess, striking plenty of swoon-worthy poses for her diva-worshipping fans.

The set list was stacked in favor of a night of epic, chanting singalongs and big fun, and Arcade Fire’s energy barely reached less than a full-on fever pitch for 2+ hours. It’s commendable that all nine

touring members could maintain the pace and enthusiasm for so long, but feeding off each other’s energy and passion has always been the band’s strong suit. Perhaps a night of unbridled release was just what band and audience needed. Closing with “Wake Up,” the song went off the rails into a beautiful collapse as the lights went on, as if the last musicians to finally leave the stage weren’t even ready to stop.

Rising LGBT comedian Lane Moore hits Tacoma stage with popular “Tinder Live” show

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer “TINDER LIVE” LANE MOORE & FRIENDS BROADWAY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PANTAGES THEATER (TACOMA) October 27 She’s an up and coming comedian with a hilarious show that’s making its way around the country. If the name Lane Moore doesn’t ring a bell as a performer, perhaps you remember her byline as a former writer for The Onion. Or maybe you saw her appear in season 5 of the acclaimed HBO series “Girls.” She’s also a musician and member of the rock group It Was Romance. She’s done a little bit of everything, but what the Brooklyn-based entertainer does best is make people laugh, especially with her touring act that pokes fun at Tinder profiles and the people behind them.

“Tinder Live,” created by Moore, is being staged at Tacoma’s Pantages Theater (901 Broadway, Tacoma) on October 27. For tickets, go to www.BroadwayCenter.org.

By phone, I spoke with Moore a week ago to get details on her upcoming performance and find out what it was like to work on the set of “Girls.” This is what she had to say to Seattle Gay News.

Albert Rodriguez: Have you performed in the Seattle area before?

Lane Moore: No, I am so excited, I can’t even begin to tell you! I’ve wanted to go to Seattle my whole life, I’ve never ever been.

Rodriguez: So what are you looking forward to doing, or experiencing, while you’re here?

Moore: Oh my goodness! Is it going to sound really dorky if I say, “I want to go to all of your thrift stores and eat a lot of vegan food?” I’ve just heard that it’s so beautiful there and I have a lot of friends who are from Seattle, and coming from New York where we don’t have a ton of nature, I just heard that everything is really beautiful in Seattle. So I think I’ll just want to sit outside and eat some food and be in a city where some of the best music has come from.

Rodriguez: Can you tell us about your show – is it entirely standup? Are there any skits, do you share the stage with anybody else?

Moore: It’s entirely improvised. The show starts off with me doing my Tinder shout outs, which are like my all-time favorite Tinder profiles, which I guess that has a standup element to it, for sure, because I’m going through these profiles and telling my jokes about them and giving the audience an idea of what happens on the show and it’s super interactive, so they’re a

Of course, BenDeLaCreme, as Patsy Jejune, wanders by and gets caught and subjected to being chased by dancing skeletons, and dancing ghosts, and a hunky weir wolf, so there’s a lot of running back and forth in ginormous heels while we all hold our breath to see if she falls down or not.

Beware the Terror of Gaylord Manor is probably best seen slightly buzzed. Certainly there is no need to pay much attention to plot, but the singing, mostly by

about how we’re trying to connect with each other. It’s about how we’re all a little bit lonely, but it’s not cool to be lonely, and we’re trying to connect, but it’s not cool to connect. I just feel like there’s something about what I do that is universal.

Rodriguez: How do you deal with moods? How do you make people laugh when maybe they don’t want to as a result of tragic events like the Orlando and Las Vegas attacks?

Moore: I mean, I think that’s when we need laughter most. To be perfectly honest, most of my life has been so painful and hard and intense – I’ve just been through so many things, where the only thing that’s gotten me through is that I do comedy and I make music and I create art.

I feel so honored that I get to have people come out to one of my shows for an hour and a half to have that weight lifted off them. One of the things that all the press who’ve written about the show have said is that I work real hard to make it so that it’s not a mean-spirited show, I don’t punch down, or anything like that. I don’t go for cheap shots, I don’t talk about people’s appearances, I really want to make it a place that’s safe, happy and fun. I’m going into these audiences fully aware of the world that we live in. I don’t know what kind of day they’ve had, they may have had a horrible day. In 2017, especially for an LGBT person, everything you see in the news is the most depressing, or for a person of color, or a woman. So I walk into every single show thinking like “I can’t wait to make you feel at least a little better, if not a lot better.”

Rodriguez: Do you include politics or world events in your shows, like what’s happening in Charlottesville or North Korea?

Moore: The show is based on my Tinder conversations, so that’s not really going to come into play. If it was a standup act, maybe.

Rodriguez: Who were your early comedic influences?

Moore: Janeane Garofalo was huge, and I actually have her on the next New York City show on November 18, so that’s gonna blow my mind. She was huge, huge, huge for me! I really loved “Daria,” she was a huge influence; that show was huge for me. “Upright Citizens Brigade,” the TV show was huge, Amy Sedaris’ “Strangers with Candy” was huge, Margaret Cho, and I really loved Mo’Nique. I actually started doing standup in my Sunday School classroom as a kid. Every Sunday, my teacher would give me ten minutes to tell jokes and funny stories, so I’ve been obsessed with comedy my whole life.

part of it. And then we go on “Tinder Live” with my special guest panel and from there it is a totally improvised show. Anything can happen, I have no idea what’s going to happen; we’re all experiencing this like a once in a lifetime wonderful thing. So, the panel comes out and they help me analyze the profiles and then I throw it to the audience and am like, “All right guys, am I swiping left or right on this person?” and my fate is totally in the audience’s hands.

They decide who I talk to, who I’m going to match with and then once me and another person match, then boom!, we have a conversation live on stage and you’re watching all of this unfold. It’s kind of what a lot of people do with their friends in bars, you’re all looking at each other’s Tinder profiles, except it’s live on a stage with a professional comedian.

Rodriguez: Have you ever done your act with Grindr?

Moore: No, I don’t know that Grindr would work as well. It might, I get asked that a lot. I just feel like on Grindr, from what I know, there’s not a lot of chit-chat (laughs); it’s like, just dick. From what I understand of Grindr, it’s pretty much dick, dick, dick, bio, here’s my dick, conversation, “Do you want my dick”? I feel like there’s not a lot of room to play there, but with straight men there’s different ways they can try to communicate in their profiles, for better or worse. I can message with this guy on Tinder for ages and keep the ball rolling and make it more and more hilarious, but I feel like guys on Grindr are just like “Do you want to fuck, or not?”

Rodriguez: I interviewed someone years ago who guest starred on “Desperate Housewives” and he said the experience was disappointing because it “was not

a happy set”; the actors weren’t speaking to each other and everybody just wanted the show to end. So, I wanted to ask what your experience working on “Girls” last season was like, because we’ve often heard of feuds happening on that set. What was it like, was there good energy, did you feel welcomed there?

Moore: Oh yeah, dude! It was the best possible energy. Everyone was so nice, everyone was so chill, everyone was so thrilled making the show. I’m not just saying that; I felt so lucky because it was a role so made for me and it was on one of the best episodes of the whole series; it was an incredible episode. It was amazing! There wasn’t any part of that experience that wasn’t great.

Rodriguez: I feel like there’s a difference between East Coast and West Coast comedy, similar to East and West Coast rap.

There are certain comedians who break through early in New York, like Sarah Silverman, who don’t establish a West Coast following until years later. Have you found it difficult to break into the biz outside New York?

Moore: Well, if that is a thing, a really big plus for me is that I actually started standup in L.A. [Laughs] So I started doing standup, improv and sketch writing in Los Angeles; that’s where I started out; and then I moved to New York. I’m from the East Coast originally, but I was on improv teams and I was doing standup at the Comedy Store and Laugh Factory, and all these different places, on the West Coast. So I’m in a lot of places, like when I’m on tour I’ll have shows in the Midwest in the middle of nowhere and the South.

I feel like it’s all pretty universal because a lot of the things I do and talk about, it’s

Major Scales, who writes original tunes for this, is fine, and the costumes are great (designed by Danial Hellman – and others? the program isn’t exactly clear).

Some of the best moments in the show are the dancers, Randy Forde, Chloe Albin, Moscato Extatique, Elby Brosch, The One The Only Inga, and Faggedy Randy. Inga does a burlesque dance, which is fun. The choreography is credited to the ensemble, but there are clearly some talented choreographers who worked together. The dancers are “real” dancers, which is a relief, since shows like this sometimes employ nondancers and then ask them to dance and they usually don’t do it well.

Cast members Scott Schoemaker and Mandy Price, as Leo(nora) Dottington and

Doctor Dottington provide much of the plot delivery, and they do a fine job keeping the story moving. Ben’s role is bland and stereotyped: she does a lot of heavy, fearful breathing and widening of her eyes, which is pretty much all that is required.

The set by Reiko Huffman includes obligatory but fun wall portraits that sing and mysterious doors that open and disappear. Lighting by Robert J. Aguilar and sound by Kevin Heard is well done, as expected by regularly employed technical folks such as they are.

Some directing choices are difficult, because this is done in The Bullitt Cabaret, which has two huge black square pillars in the room and the areas of staging are almost inevitably going to keep at least

some of the audience from seeing some of the action. There’s likely no guaranteed spot, to make sure you can see the whole show, except maybe those people sitting upstairs.

Seattle Opera’s madcap The Barber of Seville a tonic for our times

by Alice Bloch SGN A&E Writer SEATTLE OPERA THE BARBER OF SEVILLE MARION OLIVER MCCAW HALL October 15 (Sunday Matinee cast) (Same cast 10/18, 10/21 & 10/28) “Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.” That adage of the theater applies doubly to comic opera, which must be fast-paced and funny to audiences in many cultures and in many eras, as well as being musically satisfying.

If the opera is a familiar one, there’s the extra challenge of finding a fresh approach and surprising the audience at every turn.

The Barber of Seville is by far the most familiar comic opera, but stage director Lindy Hume and her team have come up with many delightful surprises for this co-production of Seattle Opera, Opera Queensland, and New Zealand Opera. A skilled cast and orchestra, conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti, definitely proved themselves up to the work’s musical and dramatic challenges in the performance I attended.

The barber of Seville is Figaro, of course, and his entrance aria in Act 1 is the most famous part of the opera. In most productions, Figaro swaggers onto the stage from the wings, but in this production, there is a loud knocking on one of the doors into the theater, and the stage manager finally opens it, admits Figaro, and gives him a glass of water. He begins singing as he moves through the audience, and by the time he reaches the stage, we are all charmed. In the Sunday matinee performance I attended, Will Liverman played Figaro with glee and finesse, and filled the hall with his big baritone voice.

It was impossible not to smile when he was onstage.

Although Figaro is the title character, he is only peripherally involved in the plot.

Young, feisty Rosina is being imprisoned in the home of her guardian, Dr. Bartolo, who intends to marry her for her inheritance.

Count Almaviva has fallen in love with her and adopts a series of ridiculous disguises to gain entry to the household and free her with Figaro’s help. The role of Rosina is generally given to a mezzo-soprano, but in this production, sopranos play the role in both casts. In the Sunday matinee, Sofia Fomina convinced me that this was a wise choice, for her bright, high voice made the character seem suitably youthful and optimistic. She did a great job of portraying the perky, smart heroine, and negotiated the difficult coloratura passages deftly. As Count Almaviva, Andrew Owens was cute as a button and sang beautifully, but his tenor voice wasn’t quite powerful enough; I could hear him well only when he was turned in my direction. Bass Kevin Glavin’s strong, agile voice and excellent comic timing made for a splendid performance as the odious but buffoonish Dr. Bartolo.

Dr. Bartolo’s servants Ambrogio and Berta appear in all productions of this opera, but in this production, their roles are much more prominent than usual. They are almost constantly onstage and are given their own subplot. In the silent role of Ambrogio, Marc Kenison (AKA burlesque star Waxie Moon) showed off his tremendous skill at physical comedy, at one point hanging from a chandelier by one ankle and waving his other limbs about. Mezzosoprano Margaret Gawrysiak’s face displayed Berta’s resentments and hopes while she dusted and vacuumed, and she gave an unusually spirited performance of Berta’s aria.

The only disappointment was the singing of Daniel Sumegi as Don Basilio, the

gossipy music master. Sumegi sounded as though he had gravy stuck in his throat, and his sluggish attempts at patter singing were painful to hear.

Production designer Tracy Grant Lord and lighting designer Matthew Marshall provided visual delights galore. The set of many colorful doors and windows was perfect for the madcap comedy, and the vivid lighting enhanced moments of hilarity. The stylish, attractive costumes spanned centuries, from the time of Rossini 200 years ago (for Ambrogio, Bartolo, and Basilio) to the mid-twentieth century (Berta) to today (Rosina, Almaviva, Figaro, and the chorus).

Choreographer Daniel Pelzig created some wonderful dance numbers, climaxing with a fabulous fandango in the final scene.

For the fandango, cast and chorus were costumed in red, except for Ambrogio and Berta, who were pretty in pink.

Jonathan Dean always excels at creating the English captions, but this time he outdid himself. The captions were colloquial and clever throughout. Bravo!

The orchestra and chorus sounded terrific, and Michael Partington added to the Spanish atmosphere by playing guitar onstage very well indeed.

Many of the scenes of Barber are pretty silly, and yet the opera gives us plenty to think about by highlighting and ridiculing the hierarchies of class, age, and sex.

Wealth is presented as an advantage to the Count, who is able to foil Bartolo and get the girl by dispensing bags of gold to Figaro, policemen, and soldiers; but Rosina’s wealth does her no good and is actually the reason Bartolo wants to force her to marry him. However, this opera treats social issues with a light touch, and Seattle Opera’s production is bound to lift your mood. Isn’t that what we all need to get through these grim, scary times?

Rossini’s comic opera. When the familiar overture begins and the proscenium lights up with an archway of brightly painted doors we know we are in the presence of comic complications as well as Day-Glo colors. It’s clear from the start that even in the face of plots and counter-plots love will triumph.

The story by librettist Cesare Sterbini is based upon a play by Beaumarchais about a clever barber, Figaro, who helps Count Almaviva woo Rosina, the girl he adores.

She’s the ward of Dr. Bartolo, a pompous old man who wants to marry her himself and claim her fortune. How Figaro bamboozles Bartolo and clears a path for true love is the matter for two acts of fabulous music and slapstick humor. And in this production we get some rowdy dancing and rock-star showmanship throughout.

Though productions of Barber are often presented in the literal world of Old Seville, complete with flamenco dresses and matador outfits, this co-production with Opera Queensland and New Zealand Opera is in the same universe with Sergeant Pepper and the Magical Mystery Tour. Lord’s costumes are in primary colors, with Figaro in purple bell-bottom trousers and Rosina in rose-covered pajamas and circle skirts.

Lighting designer Matthew Marshall has an especially busy role to play with disco lights and follow spots for this Broadwaystyle production. Once again we can be grateful for General Director Aidan Lang’s connections to arts in the antipodes that brought to Seattle the debuting artists who are responsible for this colorful and hilarious production.

Primary among these are the opening night lovers – Sabrina Puértolas with her soaring soprano as Rosina and Matthew Grill with his ringing tenor as Count Almaviva. Each has to sing challenging arias so familiar to opera goers that expectations are high – we’ve heard these arias on recordings a hundred times by famous opera stars. Happily our expectations were beautifully met by both singers, who not

only produced confidant and full-throated sound, but who performed their comic roles to perfection.

On opening night the singing was uniformly star-quality, but the shooting star was John Moore’s Figaro with his powerful baritone and unabashedly cocky acting. Not only did he raise the rafters with his stentorian voice that sounded as fresh at the end of the opera as it did in the beginning, but he gathered the audience into his machinations with every trick in the comic actor’s book, from running through the aisles to dancing the boogaloo. His uninhibited performance was an extrovert’s dream – and the audience’s delight. Moore made his debut at Seattle Opera last year in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro based on the second Beaumarchais play in a trilogy about the same characters. Ironically,

he sang the role of Count Almaviva who is no longer a young lovelorn tenor but a world-weary aristocrat who is cheating on Rosina, now his wife, by seducing Figaro’s fiancée before their wedding. Who would have thought, seeing Moore as the dark and mean-spirited Count in last year’s production of Marriage that he would return as Rossini’s sunny, funny Figaro? We can all be grateful that he did.

This production of The Barber of Seville is the perfect starter-opera for those who may never have seen an opera before, or for those who might be worried that opera is over their heads. Believe me, this is no more over your head than a fabulous show in Las Vegas. It’s sung in Italian, but the supertitles give you all the English you need, and the acting is so vivid that you could follow the story if there were no supertitles at all.

And in case you were wondering whether children would get a kick out of this, I can guarantee that they will. My opera buddy for this production was my nine-year-old nephew who laughed all the way through.

He may not have gotten every nuance of the plot, but he got all the physical humor – much of it delivered by Seattle’s own Waxie Moon (Marc Kenison) whose antics in the silent role of the servant Ambrogio kept a series of running gags and surprises going through out the evening.

Kudos all around for a delightful evening of marvelous singing, wonderful production values, and humor of the bellylaugh variety. This wonderful production of The Barber of Seville is performed through October 28. If you ever thought you’d give opera a try, now’s your chance.

Light and dark:The World of Extreme Happiness

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer THE WORLD OF EXTREME HAPPINESS SEATTLE PUBLIC THEATER Through November 5 In The World of Extreme Happiness, by playwright Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, the Chinese people are presented with two essential choices: to stay in the country and be penniless farmers or go to the City to work in factories to try to become someone more, someone famous, someone rich.

This is a dark look at Chinese culture, but it easily resonates with any subculture, anywhere in the world, where people toil in thankless jobs that sap their courage, individuality, aspiration, belief, or health.

If Cowhig wrote it about American field workers or factory workers, it would be no less applicable.

But if she did write it about America, it might be that audiences would be less open to consuming what she’s presenting. We don’t want to think about the unceasing toil that many people worldwide provide when we use what they’ve created, whether it’s Apple products or organic strawberries.

So, we meet Sunny Li (Mika Swanson), after we see her parents at her birth, so disappointed that she is female that she is literally thrown into a slop bucket. Fate intervenes, and she is saved. Immediately after that, we see her at age 18, having spent four years already in a factory, cleaning toilets.

She has sacrificed herself to provide money so that her younger brother (Kevin Lin) can stay in school and graduate, something that

she never got to do.

She meets a co-worker, Ming Ming (Maile Wong), who introduces her to an empowerment coach, Mr. Destiny (Nina Williams-Teramachi), in one of the funniest moments of the play, and attempts to propel herself into a promotion using those techniques. This sequence is, at once, a mimicry of American self-help and a sign of how hungry China is to mimic and appropriate such media-promoted ideas.

ous woman, Artemis (Kathy Hsieh) who has herself found success by creating a huge media company and to the prosperous head of Sunny’s factory, James (Van Lang Pham), who create a competition to find a simple factory worker who can star as a factory success. Sunny tries for the spot and wins it.

Dark forces, though, are at work to control prosperity in China, and once the plotlines meet, the comedy stops in a fairly abrupt manner. Sunny had been given a mysterious piece of paper by her old boss

(Allan Go), but she can’t read it. Eventually, she does learn to read and discovers that it is an underground revolutionary pamphlet.

Now that Sunny has learned so much, she has to come to terms with whether she’s helping herself to success or if success as she is discovering it makes as much sense as it seemed to.

Director Desdemona Chiang has a lot to manage in this cinematic play. It’s a bit of a challenge for audiences to follow the plot. The cast generally does a good job with their characters, though the women all are more centered in their characters than the men. Perhaps it’s because, for once, this play was written by a woman. Swanson does a particularly good job at helping us like Sunny and become affected by her journey of self-discovery.

This is a script with many layers and is not necessarily instantly understood. For many, that will be a very good thing. If you enjoy sifting through scenes in a play to determine what the playwright might be trying to tell you, this will definitely engage those thoughts.

Aladdin makes wishes come true

The musical Aladdin comes flying into Seattle with all the magic and wonder that a Disney musical can produce. The smash hit is currently playing at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. It is truly a magic carpet ride for children and adults alike.

The story line should be familiar (as the musical is based on the hit full-length animated feature film). A young ambitious boy from the streets wishes for a better life.

After circumstances bring him to the “Cave of Wonders,” the young lad (Aladdin) finds a genie in a magical lamp. The genie grants him three wishes. He wishes to become a prince so he can be a suitor for Princess Jasmine’s hand in marriage. Jasmine is a strong-minded girl who wants to marry for love and equality as opposed to the traditional laws and more misogynistic values.

But the Sultan’s evil advisor Jafar secretly plots to take the throne for himself, and must get Aladdin out of the way. Aladdin has to figure out that the best way to charm the princess is to be himself instead of a pretend suitor prince.

The cast of Aladdin has everything you could think of for a Disney stage musical.

The costumes are colorful, the scenery intriguing – changing in a flash – and of course, the acting is stellar. Everyone in the supporting cast are all on perfect mark.

The three handmaidens to Princess Jasmine (Mary Antonini, Annie Wallace, and especially Olivia Donalson) get to shine with the song “These Palace Walls.” Each one also plays a part in the ensemble with Olivia Donalson standing out as the Fortune Teller. Aladdin’s three “best buds” are Babkak (Zach Bencal), Omar (Philippe Arroyo), and the standout Kassim (Mike Longo). These three get to add comic timing to the plot and shine in their own song introducing their names and characters in a kind of “Hope-Crosby” kind of way.

Each of the leads seems to have their own individual support. Don Darryl Rivera plays the evil assistant, Iago. He recreates the role he originated in both the Seattle premiere and on Broadway, and there is no doubt as to why he continues to shine. His comic expressions and vocal command are exactly on spot sending the audience into gales of laughter. The Sultan (JC Montgomery) plays Jasmine’s father with authority and a commanding voice. He is not the bumbling buffoon of the original, and has developed into a strong presence on stage.

is a pure delight to watch. Ms. McCalla empowers this Disney princess with a strong will for respect and equality. She presents a strong presence when challenging her father’s traditional values, standing up to the evil Jafar, or holding her own alongside the creatively intelligent Aladdin.

Ms. MCalla’s voice is beautiful – sending the audience into “A Whole New World” of delight.

Jonathan Weir plays the evil advisor, Jafar. His voice and stage appearance were created for this role. The character isn’t overtly scary so younger audience members will be able to enjoy without being terrified. His voice is perfect for the “evil” advisor and he is the perfect straight man for the sidekick Iago.

Without a doubt this show belongs to Aladdin and the Genie. Aladdin is played

by Adam Jacobs who is also recreating the role he originated in the Seattle workshop and on Broadway. His work and dedication from the 2011 Pre-Broadway premiere to the Broadway debut (2014) to now seems to have definitely refined him into being a very good actor. His boyish appearance is perfectly suited for the role as is his strong voice and presence. He easily charms the audience making them an unofficial ally in all of his shenanigans. From his first solo “Proud of Your Boy” (a song originally cut from the film) to the film’s breakaway smash hit song, “A Whole New World,” Mr. Jacobs has fine-tuned this role to permanently associate himself with it beyond reproach.

The Genie is the unofficial narrator, lead and star of this show. Anthony Murphy brilliantly plays him. Without going too far

to impersonate the cartoon original, Mr. Murphy brings his own touch to this overthe-top character playing it with the kind of flamboyancy that allows children and adults to join in the laughter. Mr. Murphy’s talents (as the Genie) explode on stage like a glitter bomb staying with the audience long after they leave the theatre.

There are a few differences between the film and the stage production. The animated parrot Iago is now a human (Don Darryl Rivera – see description above) and the Genie is not blue. Abu is gone, replaced by three friends to add in comic relief and to enhance the camaraderie of the storyline. Honestly, we don’t miss the monkey.

Composer Alan Menken (who did the original film) wrote all the music. Lyric contributions on different songs came from the late Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and a good majority penned by Chad Beguelin.

True to form Disney pulls out all the stops for special effects leaving the audience to positively gape open-mouthed as the magic carpet carries Aladdin and Jasmine into the air and across the stage. Glitter cannons are used, pyrotechnics, and all the Disney flash is there to keep the eyes of audience members as wide as their inner child will let them.

Aladdin is fun, charming and entertaining for all audience members. There are enough quick references to keep adults amused, and all the flash that children will be delighted by.

Aladdin is based on the 1992 Disney full-length animated feature by the same name. Amidst great controversy with Robin Williams (as the voice of the Genie – look it up) and some of the original lyrics (changed later for future releases), the film still managed to garner three Academy Award nominations for Best Songs/Score and won two. Aladdin opened on Broadway (after a premiere in Seattle) on February 26, 2014, and is still currently running on the Great White Way. Nominated for five Tony Awards for the 2014 Season, it won Best Performance by a (Featured) Actor in a Musical for James Monroe Iglehart as the Genie.

Well-acted Marshall an oddly unfocused origin story

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer MARSHALL Now playing Marshall plays like a superhero origin story, which is rather ironic considering star Chadwick Boseman’s next starring role will come in Marvel’s Black Panther in February of next year. In director Reginald Hudlin’s (Boomerang) first theatrical feature since 2002’s forgettable Serving Sara, Boseman plays future Supreme Court Chief Justice Thurgood Marshall when he was just starting out as legal director of the NAACP, shuttling around the country to defend innocent African-Americans who had been falsely accused of a variety of truly unspeakable crimes. It was during these oftentimes sensationalistic cases that a judicial titan was born, each trial a building block that helped place him on the Supreme Court bench in October of 1967.

Hudlin’s movie is set in 1940 and involves a New England case where chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown) is charged with the rape and attempted murder of his wealthy employer Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson). Professing his innocence, the NAACP sends Marshall to take charge of the case. Only problem, the judge overseeing the trial (a grizzled and cranky James Cromwell) doesn’t take kindly to big city interlopers coming into his jurisdiction telling people what to do. He’ll allow Marshall to assist in Spell’s defense, but he must not utter a word inside the courtroom.

That job will be left to his client’s original attorney, befuddled insurance lawyer Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), who only agreed to be involved when he was under the impression he could turn the case over to Marshall and be done with it.

In some ways this is an odd approach to be taking with such a monumental historical figure. In others it makes perfect sense, the basic scenario as familiar as anything that a major Hollywood studio could have ever imagined. That this story has its basis in historical fact? That makes it even better.

Even so, the whole thing has “formulaic” written all over it, and it’s difficult not to think watching things play themselves out towards their foregone conclusion a judicial giant the likes of Thurgood Marshall deserves a heck of a lot better.

I say this as someone who did enjoy this motion picture. Boseman and Gad are excellent. The production values are strong.

Hudlin directs with more conviction and confidence than I can ever remember him displaying in his previous efforts. There are some terrific supporting performances from the likes of Brown, Hudson, Cromwell and Roger Guenveur Smith (portraying NAACP executive secretary Walter White), while Dan Stevens has a fabulous time chewing the scenery as carnivorous District Attorney Loren Willis, the man hiding his racism and anti-Semitism behind a preternaturally grinning façade that’s about as welcoming as the Big Bad Wolf hungrily eyeing one of the Three Little Pigs. Jacob and Michael Koskoff’s script doesn’t soften a lot of this story’s crueler edges (Spell isn’t

exactly a saint), while the pre-WWII setting also adds an extra layer of future dread I found properly unsettling.

But why make a movie about Thurgood Marshall when Thurgood Marshall is barely your main character? If this is going to be an origin story, why not spend a little more time showing how his activism, how his commitment to the cause and to the NAACP shaped his relationship to wife Buster (Keesha Sharp), hopefully in a manner that is far less nondescript than the ones showcased here? Other than an impassioned monologue delivered to Friedman as some sort of strange, we-have-morein-common-than-you-might-think call to action, why do we never learn more about what led Marshall to become this tireless crusader?

These questions and more kept popping up throughout the film. Thing is, whenever Hudlin and his writers took the story out of the courtroom, I did find myself increasingly intrigued with how Marshall and Friedman were interacting with one another. Their conversations have a naturalistic, easygoing patter that feels authentic, and even when things turn towards being moderately preachy and slightly didactic it was still hard not to be drawn into their evolving relationship more and more as events progressed. Boseman and Gad have surprisingly strong chemistry, and watching them begin to find common ground as their mutual love for the law and thirst for justice takes hold is suitably invigorating.

It’s a pity that the scenes inside the courtroom aren’t nearly as magnetic. Not

that they’re bad, ineptly plotted or inadequately staged. It’s all fine, Hudson’s performance as Eleanor while she is on the stand, doing her best to maintain her composure as Friedman and Marshall conspire collectively to craftily undermine everything she says, particularly outstanding.

The problem is we’ve seen all of this before.

Witness for the Prosecution, Anatomy of a Murder or A Few Good Men this film is not, these courtroom sequences playing out more like scenes from an episode of “Law & Order” or deleted excerpts from A Time to Kill or The Client more than they do anything else.

Look, I like Marshall. As much as I enjoyed Boomerang back in 1992, there’s no question in my mind that this is the best film Hudlin has ever directed, and to say he’s improved as a filmmaker over these past two-plus decades is a colossal understatement. But that does not change my feelings that this movie could have been, maybe should have been, so much more than it actually is. Thurgood Marshall is an American hero deserving of having his full story told in a manner that feels like it has more to do with him than it does the other people he randomly encountered during his 21 years working with the NAACP. By all means, see this film. Just make sure to learn more about the great man at its center as soon as possible after you exit the theatre.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE FOREIGNER Now playing After his daughter is killed in a London terrorist bombing, mild-mannered restaurant owner Quan Ngoc Minh (Jackie Chan) wants answers, going to the offices of investigating officer Commander Richard Bromley (Ray Fearon) every day urging him to tell him who was behind this dreadful act of violence. All he learns is that a group calling themselves the “Authentic I.R.A.” has claimed responsibility, and for the time being the British are allowing Irish Deputy Minister Liam Hennessy (Pierce Brosnan) to follow any and all leads as he sees best.

Heading to Ireland, Quan proceeds to demand the same thing from Hennessy that he wanted to know from Commander Bromley, the identity of who it was that planned and executed the bombing that killed his child. But unbeknownst to everyone, this seemingly timid Chinese immigrant and restaurateur isn’t what he appears to be. More, he manages to learn that Hennessy isn’t nearly as forthcoming as the Brits seem to think he’s being. Quan applies pressure on the Deputy Minister to reveal what he knows, proving to be much more resourceful and able to handle himself in a fight than anyone suspected this sixty-something Chinaman was capable of being.

Based on the novel The Chinaman by Stephen Leather, director Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale) and screenwriter David Marconi (Enemy of the State, Live Free or Die Hard) join forces to unleash The Foreigner, a surprisingly solid

political action-thriller that’s far more character-driven than initially meets the eye.

Utilizing the talents of both Chan and Brosnan perfectly, if not for a sudden left turn into unrelentingly grim ultraviolence and torture during the final few minutes, this movie proves to be a massively entertaining gem. Even with that ending being the case, it’s still fairly easy to walk away from this one smiling, Campbell proving once again he’s a dynamic old school craftsman who could likely helm a story like this in his sleep and still make it wonderful if he so desired.

The reason things end up working nearly as well as they do is in large part thanks to the filmmaker’s refusal to rush things. It’s not until over a third of the way into the film before Quan decides to take action, the first big action set piece not happening until all of the primary principals have been determined and their relationship to the mystery as it pertains to the identities of those calling themselves the Authentic I.R.A. has been solidified. This adds a layer of realism a lesser motion picture wouldn’t want to deal with, choosing instead to rush to the moment where Chan is unleashed and everyone can sit there awestruck by the still remarkable acrobatic talents of the 63-year-old icon.

But Campbell, a Bond veteran but also an accomplished filmmaker known for smartly crafted efforts like Criminal Law, No Escape, The Mask of Zorro and Edge of Darkness, knows less is more where it comes to stories like this. He understands that it’s far more suspenseful and exciting if Chan isn’t fighting for his life every five minutes, instead choosing to hold him in check until the moments it makes the most sense for his particular set of skills to be

utilized. He stages these sequences in ways that honestly and authentically address the actor’s age. Quan fights in a manner that leads one to believe he knows that if every confrontation were to last longer than a handful of minutes he’d likely come out the loser. Instead, he does all he can to make these confrontations end as quickly as possible, as such the carnage is quick, shocking and typically overflowing in adrenaline.

Chan has likely never had a role in an English language movie this vigorously multifaceted. Campbell has obviously seen his work in many of his Chinese classics like Police Story or in more recent fare like 2010’s Little Big Soldier and understands he’s a far better actor than he’s usually given credit for being. The director utilizes all of Chan’s skills, including his comedic ones, in a manner that is heartbreakingly sincere, and as such Quan becomes a far more compelling figure than he otherwise would have been.

As for Brosnan, Campbell is the one who helped him become James Bond with Goldeneye back in 1995, and with that being the case it’s not a huge surprise that the actor is fully engaged, totally onboard with all his director is asking him to do. It’s a reminder that Brosnan has always been capable of delivering mischievously intricate performances that tend to fly under the radar for one reason or another, films like Love Is All You Need, The Matador, The Ghost Writer, The Tailor of Panama and The Thomas Crown Affair proving that to be the case time and time again. Hennessy fits right in with many of the actor’s best roles, this friendly, seemingly gregarious politician a far more lethal and cunning adversary than he wants others to know, unleashing his rage only when the situation

calls for it to be put on display and no other alternatives are open to him.

The movie itself is honestly much more straightforward. It’s pretty apparent that Marconi isn’t attempting to reinvent the political thriller wheel sticking fairly close to the source material, sometimes to the story’s detriment. Secondary characters and various subplots aren’t nearly as well realized or as compelling as I’m certain he and Campbell hope they would be, while a third act chase to find a hidden bomb at an airport ends up being more ludicrous and unintentionally funny than it is anything else. There’s also the sudden emphasis on torture and bloodcurdling violence that happens around this point as well, and while the film never eschews the brutality of what it was these terrorists were doing, I still can’t say I was ready for just how bleakly sadistic some of the climactic sequences end up proving to be.

All the same, I liked The Foreigner.

There’s a chase sequence featuring Chan inside an Irish bed and breakfast that just needs to be seen to be believed, while a forest-set battle between his character and an expertly trained Special Forces tracker is all that and a pugnaciously delicious bag of chips, let me tell you. It’s also nice to see Brosnan so energized by the material, not just floating around the periphery picking up an easy paycheck, his performance more emotionally introspective than I was ready for. This movie works, and even if it doesn’t quite succeed on all levels, from an overall entertainment perspective there’s very little negative that I can say.

night film at TWIST: Seattle Queer Film Festival, I jumped at the chance to talk with her about seeing her new film. Freak Show, a coming of age story with an all-star cast including Bette Midler, Laverne Cox and rising star, Alex Lawther (The Imitation Game). If you like such classics as The Curiosity of Chance and GBF, you will love this film. I had a chance to chat with Styler by phone last Thursday (October 12th.)

MK Scott: Trudie, I just saw your film, Freak Show last night, and I thought it was fabulous. This is your first directorial debut.

How did you get involved in the project?

Trudie Styler: Well, although it’s my directorial debut, I was producing it for a year, I would say preparing it. I was producing and working with a director who took a leave of absence at the 11th hour and his other film, Mentoring, came up, and he went to go and do that. And so I was left holding the baby. And so I said to the producers I’ve done a lot of work on the movie, and on the script and I had some ideas for casting and all that, you know, how would you all feel if I would take the reigns as director? And they were wonderfully supportive, which is gratifying and surprising, and said yes, you know, jump on board and get on with the show. So that is what I did and there wasn’t a lot of time in which to get on with the show because by then we were in July and we had to prep in September meaning we had to had have it fully cast by then. So I set about finding actors and getting the cast together. And then we started shooting. And wrapped just about the day before Thanksgiving. So it was a very short four-week prep and a 22-day shoot, which I really would not prefer to do ever again.

MK: Well, this is based on a best selling novel from nineties’ club kid, James St. James. And I also noticed how you add a lot of modern touches to it. You know, it was very, very current and just the, not just the props itself, but also just if it’s just a very important and current story.

Trudie: Yes, well, it is a current story, isn’t it? Because of not allowing people to be who they are is prevalent and becoming more so in this administration, dialing back the reforms that have curtailed – and it’s very worrisome. So I hope that Freak Show in some way can draw attention to not just bullying, but with a message to young people that are attractive to say that we have one life and life shouldn’t be – we’re all born free – we should be able to be the people that we are, and that should be reflective at all times.

And this is set in a high school and I think a lot of the simple rotten sets in in the formative years as teenagers.

MK: The film has many themes about being your true self. You know, people still may call you a freak, or, you know, other terms. But it’s up to you whether or not if you’re going to be able to accept it in how you present yourself.

Trudie: Yes, totally.

MK: And what did you like best about the project?

Trudie: Oh, just about everything. It’s simply a wonderful experience for me in every way, from gathering the amazing cast, and Bette Midler is such a dream to work with, so generous with her time in playing her cameo role, but a more important role as Billy’s monstrous mother. You know, fearless and courageous, and just gave just a monumental performance. Such a dynamic actress! We’re so lucky to have her. And then as Billy, Alex Lawther, I think this role, this made me more nervous than anything, but Billy is only not in two scenes, one of which he’s listening to the door and the other is being talked about. Other than that he really is in every scene. And you need an actor of such dimension and depth, there’s so many images, nuances of that performance, we needed somebody who could hold the screen for 90 minutes. And I think he really does do that. He’s been getting reviews which are so deserved. And then we have the amazing Laverne Cox; she was so generous. She’s such a great activist. Very supportive of the project, and I think just delivers this sort of

hilarious performance when she’s pitted against the mean girl that was played splendidly by Abigail Breslin.

MK: That was actually quite a great scene right there, of here she is responding to Lynette’s nonsense and so forth, and just the expressions on their faces are just like, it just says it all.

Trudie: It’s just been great to go to the LGBT Festival in Frameline, Outfest and – just to hear the last of that scene, when

going to be Billy’s love interest, or certainly Billy does really care a lot to flip, but to flip he’s just a sexual person. And he loved Billy in a platonic way, and in a way that really matters with friendship. He had compassion when Billy was being beaten on and probably saved his life in the movie and then steps up as a decent human being. Of course, there is a portion in the movie where Billy gets betrayed by everybody – spoiler alert – but he comes back to make an apology. And

Felicia played by Laverne puts Lynette in her place. And then we have that comment, you know, “Making America great again,” which we would absolutely have Donald Trump to be President of the United States when he was running as the representative of the Republican Party. So we caught that phrase and our writers put it in the script.

Without any of us even dreaming that it would become this awful mantra.

MK: And also John McEnroe , also in the movie, my goodness, you were able to get him to be quite sensitive and tender for once.

Trudie: Yeah. I’ve known John for quite a lot of years and twisted his arm to play Coach Carter. It’s the perfect role for him.

But I was really impressed with the way that he wanted to be directed. He had no qualms with being directed, certainly. He didn’t throw any tantrums or throw his racket down. [Laughs] But he had a ball, and everybody adored him. So he was very happy to be on board with it and we shot for a couple of days and I’m so grateful for him. I mean a lot of people really gave their time and talent to this project. And I think as a support to me, as the first time as a director, that largely people were very moved by the scenes of Freak Show and wanted to make their contribution.

MK: Now, Ian Nelson, he was quite a nice catch as well. He was able to portray someone who had absolutely no problem with his sexuality, I would say for most of the film, there’s a couple of parts, but other than that I thought he was very well cast.

Trudie: Yeah. I think he’s a terrific actor.

And the flip role is very interesting because it takes a lot of people, you know, that was

I think that’s very heartfelt and apologies are a very important thing when they’re harder.

MK: Now, then also there was a possibility that the person you would least expect to be a potential romance just happens, you know, it’s like – but nothing really comes from that.

Trudie: Oh, yeah. I mean it’s a lot of people. There’s been a lot of conversation about, you know, someone could really fall in love.

Well, you know, it is in the story. But they, I imagine that they’re going to be friends for life. I think that he sort of feels that when they go on to college years or whatever that they’ll be in each others lives.

MK: Now, the music soundtrack was absolutely incredible. How involved were you in the picking the music for it?

Trudie: Oh, well, very involved! I love music, of course, and I wanted to be very specific with the kind of score that we had.

So I asked Dan Romer if he would produce the music, and I love Dan’s music. He did “Beasts of No Nation” and the “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” And I sort of feel that, I think I chose him because, to me, school, where I didn’t have a very good time as a kid, I was bullied a lot, it’s a very predatory place. And we set the school corridor, the shaming of one, and the kind of like the exaltation of another, so when the flip comes down harder you see pictures of him being a school hero, and when Billy comes out in one of his costumes and he gets heckled and spit balled and all of that. So Dan and me got together and I said, you know, it’s sort of like a human zoo, this school. So I think we should think of something that is sort of animalistic. And so Dan went out and he bought a desk, a locker and used several pairs of his

shoes and created this sort of very fantastic drive that you see, you hear rather, in all of the school scenes. And then obviously we have some great music. We use Boy George, I don’t know if you know, he did a wonderful rendition of Viva Las Vegas. It’s a really good version of it. And he said, oh, my gosh, I’ve been waiting all my life to do a cover of Viva Las Vegas. And David Foster also produced that. And who else have we got?

Perfume Genius, an LBGT band, and gave us that wonderful track, Queen when Billy is getting made up and puts on his bride’s costume. I won’t tell you the rest of that; but that one song plays all the way through that sequence. And then my daughter, Elliot Sumner’s titled song “Information.”

MK: Now, are you planning on directing any more films in the future?

Trudie: You know, I’d really love to. I’m acting at the moment for a television series on Netflix [“Falling Water”]. I’m actually enjoying that, but yeah, I’ve reviewed scripts and thinking about what to do next. And, of course, I’m quite busy with Freak Show because we’re gearing up for quite a bit of festivals. We’re excited about Seattle, and we have a New Fest in New York. And then we open January 9th; we’re going to be opening in several cities on January 12th.

MK: Yours will actually be the closing night film for the Seattle festival.

Trudie: Oh, wow! That’s really great. I didn’t know that. That’s fantastic!

MK: So that’s a testament in how wonderful and perfectly and timely this film is.

Trudie: Oh, I’m thrilled!

MK: And, of course, I have to ask you about your Rainforest Foundation. How is that doing?

Trudie: Yeah. You know, I think that the whole planet is in such a crisis, systemically.

We have wildfires everywhere, and hurricanes that are off the charts, and we have a whole sort of – we’ve exceeded all temperatures that we ever had in that region. We’re up to 45 to 48 degrees [Celsius – i.e., 113 to 118.4 Fahrenheit] which is just so hot. And we’re seeing these climate changes. And, you know, maybe you’re not paying much attention, but certainly the administration is not investing in fossil fuels, with the work that we do in the Amazon, with all the hydroelectric dams that are being built around lakes, around indigenous people, their lands, their lands for centuries, just pushed off without a care in the world with how that will impact their life. And I just think we’re seeing this trend of every man for himself, every like, there’s no cohesiveness with how serious the climate is. It’s really sickening, we need to all pull together. And I’m really quite depressed about it. But with that said we can’t give up. We need to send a message to our younger generations to join in this battle for the planet to, you know, to spare it from it becoming worse and worse. And everybody can do something. We can all do our part in fossil fuel, we can all recycle, we can all do something to make a contribution.

MK: One last question, burning question, I want to know, that I personally want to know. Your husband, of course, is Sting. Is there any of his songbook that you, do you, is personally your favorite?

Trudie: Oh, is any one of his songs my personal favorite? I think Fields of Gold is a very personal song, and it makes me weep every time I hear it; well, not every time, but when I can settle in and hear it, sometimes it’s just such a beautiful work that I think speaks very deeply to me. Yeah. I mean there are many.

MK: Your personal favorite?

Trudie: Maybe. Today it is. I am a girl.

[Laughs] MK: Oh, yes. Well, thank you. It was a joy! Please send our best to Sting.

San Francisco author and Seattle fave Armistead Maupin returned to Seattle to promote new memoir

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer To celebrate the October publication of his new memoir, Logical Family, the iconic queer writer, Armistead Maupin, author of Tales of the City and its sequels, sat down with Seattle Review of Books founder Paul Constant on Monday, October 16 for an insightful and entertaining conversation at the intimate Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall.

With a heartfelt introduction from longtime friend Dennis Coleman (formerly longtime artistic director for the Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus), the audience got a first-hand glimpse into the groundbreaking life and work of this legendary writer and activist.

One of the best moments was when Maupin answered a question regarding his writing process, saying: “Leave them laughing, leave them crying, and leave them wanting more.”

It was an evening to remember.
