Wynonna unleashes her inner rock girl at Snoqualmie Casino

She brought all this bigness with her to Snoqualmie Casino last Thursday night, where she performed a 75-minute set of music to a near full house.

The Nashville queen strummed a white acoustic guitar along to the opening number, “Mama He’s Crazy,” the first #1 single for The Judds, the country mother-daughter duo that gave Wynonna her initial success before embarking on an equally standout solo career.

“I hope tonight it’s worth the trip,” said Wynonna to everyone, dressed in black pants with matching oversized blouse and long ruby red hair draped on either side of her shoulders.

“Rock Bottom” featured some crafty slide guitar work and Wynonna’s husky voice, while “Testify to Love” was meshed into a medley with a cover of Eric Clapton’s “Change the World.” A wonderful, passionate version of “She Is His Only Need” was the evening’s highlight, though in contrast a redo of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” was performed way over the top; rather than keep it simple, the tender poprock ballad was saturated by the artist’s tooheavy vocals.

Diamond, on the road promoting his new album Melody Road, began his concert with “I’m a Believer,” a song he composed himself that has been covered by a multitude of artists from The Monkees to the Four Tops. Wearing black tuxedo pants with a blazer, which he tossed midway through the opening number, and a black shirt with turquoise-colored Western embroidery, he was supported by a full band that included a brass section, two backup singers, and musicians who’ve toured with him for decades. He was also backed by an illuminated diamond-shaped screen that displayed images during a few songs, such as “Brooklyn Roads,” dedicated to his mom, who he spoke to by phone on Sunday; she is 97.

“Are you ready to par-tay on this Mother’s Day?” he asked a rather festive crowd, many of them women dressed in bejeweled denims, or bejeweled hats, or bejeweled blouses, or anything else sparkly they found in their closet.

“Desiree” was lively and got lots of fans on their feet to sway along with it, while “Love on the Rocks” was delivered beautifully and delicately with soft lighting and Diamond singing at the foot of the stage.

Stunning is a good word to describe “Hello Again,” an emotional ballad from The Jazz Singer that made some audience members teary-eyed, and Diamond performed “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” at one end of the stage, reaching his hand out to an el-

left dissatisfied, literally – many people fled through the exit doors about midway through. I, too, had hoped to experience live renditions of “Tell Me Why,” “I Saw the Light,” “Only Love,” and “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days),” but sadly all of these were left off the set list. Fortunately, two fan favorites, “No One Else on Earth,” which closed out the performance (with no encore afterwards), and “Love is Alive,” were squeezed in.

Backed by a full band, that included husband and drummer Cactus Moser, Wynonna seemed to be having a ball on stage, regardless of the fact she was giving the audience a rock concert that strayed far from her country roots. At one point, she shook her hair madly and played a little air guitar.

She did mix in a couple of new songs, which

were sassy and blues-pop oriented, and both were catchy, yet neither made up for the hits everyone had wished to listen to.

Something else that’s big about Wynonna is her humor. Answering to criticism from those who think she’s not country enough, she hilariously noted, “I did my mom’s hair for 10 years. If that ain’t country!” On the serious side, she also acknowledged her previous struggles and demons, saying truthfully “If I wasn’t here, I’d be dead or in jail.”

With a new album expected later this year, it’s very possible Wynonna will return in the near future for another concert. In the meantime, I’ll have “Tell Me Why” on repeat.

Margaret Cho to stalk Seattle in October with “The psyCHO Tour”

The Emmy and Grammy- nominated comedian is hitting the road soon with a new production titled “The psyCHO Tour” with a planned stop at the Moore Theatre on October 24. She’ll also take her concert to various North American cities, like Portland, Miami, Chicago, Washington DC, Boston, Tucson, and her hometown of San Francisco, before embarking on a European tour later in the year.

“This show is about insanity, and about the anger I feel about everything happening in the world right now, from police brutality to racism to the rising tide of violence against women,” states Cho on a press re-

lease. “It makes me all so crazy – hence the title: “The psyCHO Tour” – there is no “I” in team but there is a “CHO” in psycho.”

Her performance will touch on subjects and issues that have become water cooler chatter, from Bruce Jenner’s transition to Boko Haram, but she’ll tackle them with personal insight and her own comedic flair.

She’ll draw from personal experiences, though she might also channel two of her late, close friends, Robin Williams and Joan Rivers, who both died in 2014. Cho’s friendship with Williams inspired her to raise awareness and donations for the homeless by launching the #BeRobin campaign.

Magic flute continued from cover

is not only the most tuneful of the twentytwo musical dramas he wrote, but the most fantastical, funny, and heartfelt. It has been in constant performance since its premiere in 1791, and even today is the third-most performed opera in the world.

Why the love? Because of all his twenty-two musical dramas, The Magic Flute is the only one that was not commissioned by kings and aristocrats to entertain the nobility. Mozart and his librettist, Emanuel Schikaneder, wrote this work for the ordinary theater-going public in Vienna who liked fairy tales, scary monsters, silly jokes and happy endings. They also liked to see hard work rewarded, good triumph over evil, and love blossom for the high-born as well as the lowly. The Magic Flute has it all – and on top of that, it celebrates love and marriage as the greatest joys in life and the source of wisdom and virtue. By watching the hero, Tamino, and the scapegrace birdcatcher, Papageno, find true love by fighting monsters, withstanding magical trials, and rescuing the princess Pamina from evil forces, you are meant to go away humming its catchy tunes and feeling good about yourself, no matter your condition in life.

Like all good fairy tales, it makes you feel hopeful and empowered to face your own trials. The Magic Flute is the Nutcracker of opera – so popular in its charm and good will that it’s a slam-dunk for the opera company or music group that produces it.

Feminear managed to sing without irony, and to use her full, easy voice to give “Ach, ich fühl’s” the plaintive quality of lost love that makes it so memorable, and to blend her lovely, powerful soprano with Geoffrey Penar’s baritone in the wistful duet in praise of “mann und weib,” man and wife, or love at its best. Ross Hauk, Seattle’s favorite tenor, played the prince Tamino – in this production a yuppie master-of-theuniverse type – with the dash and energy that befits a hero on a quest. His character, however, was overshadowed by his sidekick, Papageno, who was presented as a dumpster-diving, joke-cracking homeless guy living under a freeway.

This updating of the setting was an intriguing idea – I’m a big fan of experimentation with time periods because real insight can come with the tension between an early text and a contemporary or alternative setting. Hamlet in the Civil War; Carmen in the barrio; Don Quixote in the lunatic asylum; Tristan und Isolde in outer space – bring it on! Experimentation refreshes opera in the same way it refreshes Shakespeare. Since The Magic Flute is a Singspiel (“sing-talk”) – meaning that the recitatives between songs are spoken instead of sung – the text can be easily re-translated or updated to reflect a change in setting without messing with the arias, duets and choruses.

Playwright Karen Hartman’s re-visioning of The Magic Flute to the urban present offered lots of opportunities to see the characters in a new light. But though it was fun

What a great choice, then, for the collaboration of renowned, Grammy-winning Pacific MusicWorks and the faculty and students of the University of Washington School of Music. After the great success of Pacific MusicWork’s Semele last year – a much tougher sell to the general public than Mozart’s crowd-pleaser – I was not alone in my eager anticipation of a wonderful evening, especially since Seattle audiences have not had a chance to see The Magic Flute fully produced since Seattle Opera’s delightful production in 2011.

And, musically speaking, it was all any music-lover could wish for. Conductor Stubbs led his orchestra of thirty-eight – an even balance between Pacific MusicWorks players and UW music students – in a round, rich, lively account of Mozart’s familiar music, made warmer by the addition of thematic interludes played by the woodwinds to cover frequent scene changes. I loved the rustic, reedy sound of these simple tunes being brought forward from the larger context of the opera to be considered in peace, as it were, while the curtain was down and we sat, undistracted, in the dark.

When the lights were up and the action was on, the singers themselves gave fine accounts of their characters, each with arias or duets that are justly cherished for their melodious plucking of the heartstrings. My favorite voice of the evening belonged to Mary Feminear, singing Pamina. Though directed to play the role in a more dashing and modern way than is traditional, Miss

to see the monster in Act I represented as a gang of toughs and the three ladies as gothgirls, she missed an opportunity by leaving out the fierce animals that Tamino tames with his magic flute. How this moment is handled is always one of the hallmarks of a production – from dancers in tiger suits to Julie Taymor’s giant bear puppets – yet this production ignored the animals all together. You and I know there are animals in the asphalt jungle worthy of taming: rats, mangy dogs, feral cats, even scavenging raccoons. Heck, she could have had a gang of panhandlers drop their cardboard signs and dance to the music! But this oversight is not my main complaint with Hartman’s work.

Herein is my major complaint with this production: Karen Hartman re-wrote the good guy, Sarastro, into a bad guy, rendering all of his scenes into ambiguous moral conundrums and all of his arias to love and virtue into heavy irony. Though the role was sung ably by Colin Ramsey, he was directed into behaviors so at odds with the texts he was singing that it was almost impossible for him to represent a coherent idea in the schizoid swing of values from one scene to the next. This Sarastro is cruel and sexist, segregating the women and encircling himself with yes-men, then singing about tolerance and brotherly love. The addition of a pointless and unmotivated feminist pantomime in the last moment of the finale does nothing to rescue Hartman’s misconceived adaptation. She either has a basic misunderstanding of the opera or she

has no interest in the opera’s message.

Goofy as the libretto sometimes is – with three magical women popping up here and three magical boys popping up there, sudden appearances of a monster and wild animals, a gang of horny palace guards chasing a baffled princess, and a weirdly shape-shifting Queen of the Night – The Magic Flute still has a very explicit moral center. The text clearly claims that through patience in the face of suffering mankind will achieve a higher state of virtue, one worthy of love with a partner, leading to communal love that elevates society. This theme makes Sarastro the voice of reason, Tamino the forthright youth seeking his calling, and Papageno the oafish lout who is elevated to finer values by love and family.

As corny as this may seem to a contemporary writer like Hartman, it is still Mozart and Schikaneder’s narrative and the purpose of the opera. You can mess with every aspect of the language, costume, setting, movement, even the tone. But if you so distort the narrative as to make it cynical and ironic when it is written to be sincere and direct, then the inherent sweetness and charm of the opera is made muddy and confusing. Audiences from 1791 through 2015 have loved this opera not only for its beautiful music and comic subplot, but for its deep sense of optimism. Yet in this production that optimism is replaced with misanthropic humor that leaves the audience dissatisfied.

A moment that illustrates this cynicism comes toward the end, during the famous duet between Papageno and Papagena – two ordinary people (in this production they are street people) who have finally come together because Papageno, in his bumbling way, has gotten a pass from Sarastro and been awarded with true love. In every production of The Magic Flute I’ve ever seen this duet is a culminating moment of humor and joy, in which the couple plans to have lots of little “papagenos” and “papagenas.” Sometimes this imaginary future family is acted out between the couple with hugs and kisses, and other times the little

“papageni” are represented by real children who pop out from behind bushes or scrims or cabbage leaves to show the exuberant abundance of love that the song embodies.

Seattle Opera’s production of The Magic Flute uses this tradition of the “papageni,” with children in stair-step sizes emerging in such a cheerful eruption that the audience roars with laughter and delight. In this production, however, Papagena leaps into the dumpster and gives her true love, Papageno, the finger – a gesture so unexpected and ugly that there was a gasp in the audience on the evening I attended. I got the joke – Papageno is a birdcatcher and his girlfriend gave him the “bird” – but even if the mostly-over-fifty audience eventually worked it out, it’s a supercilious gesture made even worse by “papageni” in the form of broken dolls and doll parts that are thrown out of the dumpster as they sing about future children, now ironically in the face of disembodied arms, legs and heads. Papageno makes matters worse by stomping on the dolls as he joins Papagena in the dumpster.

If any behavior could be less joyous and familial I can’t think of what it would be.

As I was leaving Meany Hall I listened to the comments of audience members as they gave credit to the musicians, the performers, and some aspects of the humor and settings. But one woman in the elevator summed it up for me when she said sadly, “They changed it too much.” She wasn’t talking about the music, played with superb integrity and style by Pacific MusicWorks and their UW student colleagues, nor was she talking about the fine performances by an array of talented singers. It was the sardonic “text adaptation” by Karen Hartman that undermined what might otherwise have been an intriguing exploration of The Magic Flute in the urban jungle.

Max returns with furiously brilliant savagery

He is taken prisoner by the dictatorial Immortan Joe (Hugh KeaysByrne), the disfigured madman lording it over a desert oasis creating a community of cutthroats and madmen while attempting to continue his bloodline using a quintet of beautiful young women as mothers for his progeny.

The trusted Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) has stolen the Immortan’s massive War Machine, a vehicular juggernaut used to transport water and gasoline across the desert. She has freed the Five Mothers, The Splendid Angharad (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), Toast the Knowing (Zoë Kravitz), Capable (Riley Keough), The Dag (Abbey Lee) and Cheedo the Fragile (Courtney Eaton), hoping to whisk them away to freedom. But as capable as she is, as driven and as focused as this warrior might be, it soon becomes clear she cannot

complete this task on her own. She’s going to need help, and the only one willing to sit next to her is Max, this desperate loner who isn’t above leaving those behind who cannot fend for themselves.

Mad Max: Fury Road shouldn’t exist.

Creator George Miller’s return to the futuristic dystopian wasteland of Mad Max, The Road Warrior and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome was over 30 years in the making and included so many stops, starts, reboots and reimaginings the fact the sequel is now here is moderately flabbergasting. The reality it’s this gosh darn magnificent even more so. Without a doubt, make no mistake, this is the best major studio blockbuster since The Bourne Ultimatum, probably since Avatar, maybe even since The Fugitive. It’s an epic, ambitious, eyepopping spectacle of a world in constant chaos and the lengths those attempting to live within it will go to survive.

Even the cult fanatics who have watched The Road Warrior a billion times and can recite every line of dialogue from Beyond Thunderdome will not be prepared for what Miller and Fury Road have in store for them. There is no letup. There is no time to breathe. For a 120 straight minutes the film is in motion, propelling forward right

from the jump, developing characters and their backstories as it goes along, trusting that the audience will be able to figure it all out without a lot in the way of handholding or expository silliness.

Not that Miller, working with co-writers Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris (who was the Grease Rat in the original Mad Max), doesn’t craft three-dimensional stories or tell a full-bodied, intricately layered story. Just the opposite. The difference is that he explores what is going on inside the world and who these characters are while things are in motion, allowing their actions and their decisions to define and shape them in ways nonessential bits of dialogue ever could. Everyone has their arc, all go on their journey, so when tragedy strikes or redemption is earned the overall emotional impact is staggering.

What’s most interesting, and as good as Hardy is taking over the role that made Mel Gibson an international superstar way back in 1979, is that Max, for all his impact, for all his importance, is actually a secondary character. In many ways he is just here, the outsider allowing us an insight into this part of the world teetering out of control, along for a ride he hasn’t the first clue where it will take him or what it will demand to survive. He is a steely, almost monolithic presence, a masculine bit of iron alongside which those looking for strength can latch on to in hopes of finding comfort and the inspiration to carry on.

No, the real star is Furiosa and Theron’s jaw-dropping, absolute, all-encompassing immersion inside of her. She is the heart and the soul of the film, the true engine keeping things headed towards an unknowable destination. This is a warrior who has regret lurking within, hoping that by freeing the Five Mothers and leading them to safety she can find, not solace, but redemption. This is as complex a character – female or male – that has inhabited a big studio blockbuster in what feels like decades, the closest comparison I can make being Sigourney Weaver’s Oscar-nominated work in Aliens.

Then there is the look and feel of the

film itself. Veteran John Seale’s (The English Patient, Witness) camerawork is a sea of light, shadow and color, the oppressive detail inhabiting the golds of the deserts, the blues of the sky and the greens of the scant few plants struggling to exist leaping off the screen. Jenny Beavan’s (The King’s Speech) costumes tell tales in and of themselves, while the film’s overarching makeup design is an undeniable triumph. The score

by Tom Holkenborg a.k.a. Junkie XL, is an immersive sonic landscape, the compulsive, almost assaultive rhythms becoming an essential ingredient as things move towards their climax.

Miller, working in tandem with editor Margaret Sixel (Babe: Pig in the City), is in absolute control of every moment, every frame, nothing happening that he does not intend. While none of this could have been created outside of the modern digital age, the fact the majority of what we see is practical, that the director is throwing vehicles around like iron-spiked bowling balls much as he did the first time around in 1979, is undeniably extraordinary. On top of that, the filmmaker’s sheer cinematic acumen is astounding, and it’s hard not to get the feeling that silent era greats like Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd wouldn’t look upon what Miller has accomplished and cheer.

I honestly don’t know what general audiences will make of Mad Max: Fury Road. I do know that, if they choose to buy a ticket, they undoubtedly will not see anything else like it in all of 2015. Not so much a sequel as a reigniting of a franchise that’s been sitting in neutral since 1985, at 70 years young Miller again has announced himself as one of the gutsiest, most aggressively innovative directors of, not just his generation, but quite possibly of all time, creating an adrenalized masterpiece in the process.

Anti-war polemic Tangerines a spellbinding treat

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer TANGERINES Now playing As the conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian continues to escalate, many in Ivo’s (Lembit Ulfsak) close-knit Estonian community have chosen to flee instead of staying to see the violence get worse. But his and his friend Margus’ (Elmo Nüganen) crop of tangerines are ripe and ready for picking so he decides to stay to see the job of harvesting them completed, hoping he can work in quiet as war begins to rage around him. Things get complicated when a pair of soldiers, Chechen Ahmed (Giorgi Nakashidze) and Georgian Niko (Misha Meskhi), appear upon his porch at death’s door. He must help them but, in doing so, he threatens bringing the war inside his home, their distrust and disgust for one another potentially trumping the gentle tranquility of Ivo’s tangerine harvest.

The Estonian import Tangerines, a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nominee, is a spellbinding treat, a delectable antiwar polemic of understanding and forgiveness that breaks the heart just as it

uplifts the soul. Featuring a stupendous central performance from legendary character actor Ulfsak, writer/director Zaza Urushadze’s pacifist melodrama might wear its intentions on its sleeve yet that doesn’t make its central message any less powerful. Subtle, intimate and emotionally authentic, this is one motion picture deserving of just about every award and bit of praise thrown its way over the past year.

None of this is meant as hyperbole. Urushadze’s scenario might not be full of any surprises – not a one – but that somehow doesn’t make it any less impactful. In Ivo he crafts a strikingly delicate, miraculously nuanced central character easy to get behind and root for, his decisions making perfect sense even if one’s initial instincts might be almost entirely opposite of the one’s he is working by. His reasons for staying are heartfelt, deeply personal, while his decision to care for both wounded soldiers, even though they’re on opposite sides of the conflict, are intimately multifaceted.

It helps considerably that, in Ulfsak, he has a star who is completely unafraid to wear his thoughts, opinions and his heart on his sleeve, the actor delivering a strikingly complex performance that’s marvelous. His initial reactions to both Ahmed

and Niko’s appearances are sublime, while his early interactions with Margus crackle with friendly sincerity. While not familiar with him myself, it’s immediately clear why Ulfsak is considered an Estonian treasure, his performance coming remarkably close to perfection.

Visually, there’s not a lot to talk about, Urushadze content to let his camera observe free from any additional flourishes on his or cinematographer Rein Kotov’s parts.

And, again, the point of all this is never in

doubt, the filmmaker’s comments on war and friendship decidedly obvious. As antiwar treatises go this one doesn’t offer up anything new, things coming to a close exactly as anticipated back when the film first begins. Yet Tangerines works, oftentimes spectacularly, watching it an ebullient joy start to finish.

Pitch Perfect 2 sings a happy tune

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer PITCH PERFECT 2 Now playing The general rule is that comedy sequels rarely, if ever, work. Ghostbuster 2? Terrible. The Hangover Part II and The Hangover Part III? Both close to unwatchable.

Grown Ups 2? Even worse than its predecessor – which is saying something, considering the first was fairly terrible in and of itself. The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps?

Irredeemable in every single way. Caddyshack 2? The less said about that all-time disaster the better. What’s more, this list isn’t even the tip of the iceberg, the sheer volume of putrid cinematic tedium filling the comedy sequel Hall of Shame mortifying in its enormity.

It is into these waters, then, that Pitch Perfect 2 fearlessly wades, confident in its certainty that it will not fall to the same frustratingly disappointing, borderline infuriating fate of so many of its genre predecessors. Directed by producer Elizabeth Banks (who also returns as a quippy a cappella play-by-play announcer), with another assertive and self-assured screenplay by Kay Cannon, this is a rare sequel that is more than content to be what it is and not try to overreach. The filmmakers understand what made the 2012 surprise hit first film work, realize that they are not trying to reinvent the wheel, and as such they’ve crafted a second narrative for the Barden Bellas that’s actually a heck of a lot of fun.

Not that there are no speed bumps along the way. Rebel Wilson was the last effort’s

breakout star, that goes without saying, but that doesn’t mean her “Fat” Amy should become such a focal point for the madness and mayhem this time around. The sequel puts her front and center far too often, and while the actress is still an undeniable screen-stealing talent, as far as this character is concerned less is most definitely more. If anything, I found myself shrugging and squirming in my seat every time she took the spotlight, and while some of her bits do produce chuckles, the majority left me decidedly cold.

There’s also a rather ho-hum dynamic running through one of the film’s subplots involving Anna Kendrick’s wannabe music producer Beca, her reticence to reveal to her fellow Bellas that she’s gotten a plum internship at a local record label (they’re producing a Christmas album for Snoop Dogg) not exactly overflowing with drama.

While there are laughs and giggles infused within these bits, how they relate back to the Barden singers and their close-knit sisterhood is tenuous at best, pointless at worst, everything building to a throwaway climax that, while honest, isn’t exactly worth all the effort it took to get there.

But the basic plot itself? The reason this sequel purports to exist? On that front Banks and Cannon do both themselves as well as their gaggle of talented actresses proud. Yes, all of this climaxes at another competition (this time a World Championship event against the best a cappella groups from around the world). Yes, everything that transpires is ignited by an unfortunate on-stage calamity that stops the Bellas embarrassingly cold (Fat Amy splits her pants – sans underwear – in a special Ken-

nedy Center performance in front of the President and the First Lady on the former’s birthday). Be that as it may, the film knows these characters and their world with emphatic clarity, the Bellas path to redemption, as obvious as it might be, an awfully difficult one to resist.

Hailee Steinfeld makes for a wonderful, spunkily energetic addition to the cast (she’s Emily, an excitable newcomer with a knack for writing her own original songs), while a detour shepherded by an almost unrecognizable David Cross into the world of underground a cappella fighting is gloriously hysterical. The main foils standing in the Bellas’ way this time around is a German group calling themselves “Das Sound Machine” and they are a total hoot right

from the start, their staging of a certain Muse anthem magnificent in its melodious insanity.

I can’t say Pitch Perfect 2 hits all the right notes, and it certainly isn’t the out-inleft-field treat its predecessor proved to be.

At the same time, Banks and her talented group of actors and fellow filmmakers have done a nice job, composing a solid, fitfully funny operetta that’s far more of a treat than comedy sequels more often than not have proven themselves to be. It’s an entertaining lark, the tune I was humming as I exited the theater an undeniably pleasant one.

2015 Summer Film Preview – May & June

Technically, the Summer Movie Season began two weeks ago with the release of Marvel’s massive Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1. But that sequel was always preordained to be a gigantic hit, its path to worldwide box office domination set in stone the very moment its predecessor, 2012’s The Avengers, came to an end. It also meant that last week’s offering, the Reese Witherspoon/Sofía Vergara biddy comedy-action hybrid Hot Pursuit, was equally destined to underwhelm no matter what its actual qualities (of which it had only a precious few), making the talking about it a relative waste

of time.

For a variety of reasons, this third Friday of May finally seems to be the appropriate time to talk about what Hollywood has in store for the first two months of the Summer. Not only do we see the 30 years in coming Mad Max: Fury Road, there’s also fellow sequel Pitch Perfect 2, the a cappella musical comedy generating a ton of excitement ready to enjoy another concert

by Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and the rest of the Barden Bellas. Most importantly, with yesterday’s gala screening of director Paul Fieg’s star-studded comedy Spy, this year’s Seattle International Film Festival has begun its annual 25-day assault on local theaters, over 400 features, documen-

taries and shorts scheduled to play at some point between now and June 7.

But what else does Hollywood have up its sleeve for May and June? Let’s just say Max Rockatansky’s return isn’t the only comeback relying about fans fond remembrances of cinema decades past. Next week sees a new Poltergeist, while early June offers up a return to Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur theme park playground with the release of Jurassic World. Other sequels include horror trilogy capper Insidious Chapter 3 and ribald talking stuffed animal comedy Ted 2, while Warner Bros raids HBO’s television vaults in order to unleash a big screen continuation of Entourage.

There are some notable original properties, not the least of which is director Brad Bird’s ambitious, shrouded in mystery Tomorrowland, while Pixar impresario Pete Docter animates arguably his most outlandish family-friendly fable yet, Inside Out taking place almost entirely inside the mind of an adolescent girl. There’s also a pair of breakout favorites from the Sundance Film Festival, both Me, Earl and the Dying Girl and Dope generating the kind of buzz usually only associated with Oscar frontrunners, while one-time wunderkind (and Seattle legend) Cameron Crowe makes his return to the multiplex with the quirky drama-comedy-romance Aloha starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Alec Baldwin.

The following is a short list of some of the films scheduled to hit Seattle screens throughout the remainder of May and all of June. As always, release dates are subject to change, so check with the venue before heading out to the theater.

continued from cover tures, documentaries and shorts from the world over scheduled to screen at venues throughout Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Films big, small and gloriously in-between will make their appearance, offering up literally something for everyone as the world’s largest, best attended film festival marches happily forward in all its glorious, unabashed cinematic excess.

TAB HUNTER Of all the visitors, filmmakers and dignitaries scheduled to appear during the festival, it’s quite likely the one that gets me most excited is Hollywood icon Tab Hunter. At one point he was considered a studio golden boy, appearing in big budget musical productions like Damn Yankees and seeing his shirtless image plastered on posters around the globe while also having a number one single with the release of “Young Love” in 1957. But by the 1960s the worm had turned, the days of the “Studio System” on their way out, leading to the actor being outed by paparazzi and in many ways ending what had been a successful career as leading man and romantic lead.

He worked off and on for the next 20 years appearing mostly on television and in a series of lower budgeted B-movies, never again rising to the same iconic heights of his youth. It was meeting and working with legendary gonzo filmmaker John Waters on the 1980 underground classic Polyester that ultimately brought Hunter back into the limelight, however; the film giving him a first opportunity to truly be himself in front of the camera like no production before ever had. In 2005 he penned the eye-opening memoir Tab Hunter Confidential, the autobiography a beautifully well-written and intimately raw account of his life and times in Hollywood working as a closeted actor.

It took a little convincing, but celebrated director Jeffrey Schwarz (Vito, I Am Divine) was able to convince the actor that now was the time for a documentary based on his memoir. Sharing the title of the autobiography, the film, playing as a part of SIFF tonight (May 15) at 7 p.m. and tomorrow (May 16) at 11 a.m., both screenings at the Harvard Exit Theatre, is a revelation, digging even deeper into Hunter’s story while also sharing fascinating interviews – both archival and new – with notable filmmakers and celebrities including Clint Eastwood, Debbie Reynolds, Connie Stevens, George Takei, Noah Wyle, Rock Hudson, John Waters and celebrated Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. It’s

magnificent, Schwarz composing a fascinating historical journey that’s almost impossible not to be mesmerized by.

A week before his scheduled arrival at the film festival, I had a chance to speak with Hunter via phone. Here are some of the highlights from that conversation: Sara Michelle Fetters: When you were approached to take part in this documentary, when it was suggested you should help transform your memoir into a film, what went through your head? Was this something you thought was a good idea? What sort of convincing did it take to get you onboard with the idea?

Tab Hunter: It was Allan’s thought, my longtime partner Allan Glaser, and it was him that talked me into doing the book in the first place and, for that, I thought, what the hell, I’ll give it a shot because at least this way they’ll have the truth from the horse’s mouth and no one can make me look like a horse’s ass after I’m dead and gone.

So, that was the book, and I always thought it was going to stop there, but then it became a bestseller and Allan, after a little bit of time, came back to me and suggested we should make a documentary out of it. I rolled my eyes at him and initially said no, but he came back saying how it would be this story of a person’s journey from youthful age, dreaming of being in pictures, going into the Golden Age of Hollywood and then finally a story of overcoming prejudice and stigma. He thought it could be very helpful to young people who might be confused and unsure of who they are and what

they want to be in their lives. He really felt my story could do people some good. How could I say no to logic such as that?

Sara Michelle Fetters: In many ways, I don’t think the film could be more timely, what with what’s currently going on at the Supreme Court as well as the conversations we’re having in this country right now in regards to teenage bullying as it relates to sexuality and gender expression. In retrospect, you could say that the book came out at the perfect time when it did in 2005. Now, here in 2015, you can say the same thing about the movie.

Tab Hunter: Timing is always everything, without question, but it is interesting that both the book and the movie seemed to get released right when we’re having these really hard, profound conversations in this country about a lot of the issues you just mentioned. Director Jeffrey Schwarz really worked very hard on the film and I trusted him implicitly. We [Allan and I] had done interviews with him on the Divine documentary and it was never a question he’d be the one to handle this film as far as we were concerned.

When I first saw it [the film], I couldn’t believe what he’d done. I was just blown away. It was a very good feeling. I was so pleased to see how it turned out. Then, to have it released now by HBO, when so much is going on in the country right now involving so many of the issues we talk about in the film, I just feel so lucky, and I do hope young people watch it and hopefully are able to learn something about their own journeys and that they understand that there is hope and happiness waiting for them if they reach out and grapple for it.

Sara Michelle Fetters: It’s not just the archival interviews, which are fascinating, but it’s the interviews he managed with many of your contemporaries right now.

Were you ever surprised at what people had to say about you?

Tab Hunter: Allan told me upfront that he wanted to bring in many of the people that I knew and had worked with over the decades, but he also said he wanted to interview people he said were inspired by my story but that I didn’t know, people like Portia de Rossi, Noah Wyle, Lainie Kazan and so many others. I trusted him, and I wanted to make sure he had the freedom to tell the story he felt needed to be told, but I honestly didn’t know what to expect until I saw the finished film.

But as far as being surprised? I can’t say I was. I mean, at this point, it’s pretty much all been said, both good and bad. I was appreciative, for certain, and I’m gratified by many of the remarks, but I honestly can’t say I was surprised. What actually meant the most to me was seeing my mother, my brother, my good friend Dick Clayton who helped get me started in this industry, there would be no Tab Hunter if not for him, it was those things, those inclusions, that’s what touched me the most. The way Allan presents them all I was very pleased with.

Those moments mean a lot.

Sara Michelle Fetters: I’m always a little flabbergasted, looking at your story and that of fellow closeted stars like Rock Hudson and Richard Chamberlain, by what it took to survive during this portion of Hollywood history, what it took for you to be a star.

Tab Hunter: But that’s what life is, isn’t it? It’s about survival. About the choices you make. Look, a lot of people are really out there and are very active in their feelings and I am so impressed and inspired by that ability. During my time in Hollywood, I was just the opposite. I was very quiet. I was very reserved. I had to be what they [the studios] wanted me to be or they’d just go find somebody else. It was that simple.

Those wonderful movie moguls of the time, they knew what it took to build and make careers, and if you wanted to be a star then you did what they said no questions asked.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Because they also knew how to destroy careers.

Tab Hunter: Exactly. They had the power. But, then, they were your boss and you did your job, that’s all there really was to it. Now, I did turn down a few films and that didn’t exactly make me the most popular guy on the lot at times, but they also knew which films to put me in that would show me off the best. But I did finally wear out my contract, and that was actually when everything changed for me as far as my career was concerned, it wasn’t the moguls going out of their way to destroy me or anything.

The studio era? In my opinion it was a wonderful time, even with its flaws. It’s a whole different ballgame now. It’s all large corporations, all of which that seem to think spending more money makes better motion pictures which is unconditionally untrue. Like it was during my day, it’s still all about the material. Material, material, material; great material is how you make a great motion picture.

Sara Michelle Fetters: And, you should know, because you were actually there when everything changed, when the Studio System came to an end during the late 1950s, early 1960s, and the new wave of filmmakers and studio heads began taking control. You saw it firsthand.

Tab Hunter: I did. That’s a very good point. You also have to realize television was really starting to take command of the audience’s attention during that time, and that really did hurt the motion picture industry, more than I think today’s young people and moviegoers comprehend or understand. Those moguls knew what they wanted. Today, these large corporations, they rarely have any sort of idea as to what it is they want. There are too many people adding their input. The writer and the director and the producer, they no longer have any control. They’re forced to go along or they [the studios] will just find someone else to take their place. I mean, ego is a killer, and with all these corporate boardrooms

trying to make decisions overriding the filmmaker’s wants and intentions I think there’s a lot of ego getting in the way today.

Sara Michelle Fetters: If you can’t sell the plot of a film in five words, or if it isn’t about a superhero or a name franchise, or if it won’t play in China, then there’s no reason to make the movie at all.

Tab Hunter: Right. Concentration spans seem to be only two minutes long anymore or, at least, that’s how these corporations think. It’s not good for the industry, and I think that’s why the majority of the good films you see have to be made independently outside of studio reach. Not all, as with anything there are exceptions, but the majority. I don’t see how anyone can disagree with that.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Back to your story, do you ever allow yourself to think what could have been? What might have happened with your career had the Studio System not come to an end, had you not been outed? I mean, when Damn Yankees came out, in all honesty you were one of the biggest stars in the world at that point.

Would remaining there have been worth the cost it would have required to do so?

Tab Hunter: My mother was a wonderful, strict, old-fashioned German woman, and she always said something doesn’t sit well with a lot of people even though it’s absolute true: Accept things as they are, not the way you want them to be. Whoa. I mean, think about that for a second. What a statement! So true.

Sara Michelle Fetters: You also got the opportunity to work with some incredible directors, George Abbott, Stanley Donen, Raul Walsh, William A. Wellman, Sidney Lumet, John Huston, just to name a scant few.

Tab Hunter: Wonderful directors. For me, the greatest ones that I had the pleasure to work with were the ones who came out of live television. Sidney Lumet. John Frankenheimer. Arthur Penn. They just knew how to get the best out of you. We’re talking really fine directors. But then, I go over to Italy and I’m working with Luchino Visconti. I mean, my gosh, this man was brilliant! I was very lucky to work with the directors I did, no question.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Could you have gone to Italy, worked with Visconti, had your story not had the arc that it had?

Tab Hunter: He wanted me for Senso back in 1954, but my agent at the time

didn’t even know how to pronounce his name let alone give me the script, so that never happened. When I met with Luchino years later he told me this story and I rolled my eyes. If only I had known! I mean, that film! It’s stunning. But I would get the chance to work with him later on. He was a master. One of the best.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Then there is John Waters. In many ways, your story wouldn’t be complete without him. What was that like? Getting that call from him?

Working with Divine and all the rest on Polyester?

Tab Hunter: John is your friendly undertaker. He truly is a sweet, if mischievous, man. He was wonderful to work for.

He was terrific. He had his group and they were devoted to him, willing to do anything. It was guerilla filmmaking at its finest. In many ways I owe so much to him. To this day, I can’t help but smile every time I see John. I enjoy him so very much.

But, making Polyester, you just had to embrace the moment. It was a very exciting time. It really was. It was the first film I’d done in ages, I was doing dinner theater at the time and I had two weeks off so I thought, what the hell, I’ll do this little picture for this guy with the crazy mustache and see what happens. I had read the script and it frankly sounded like a lot of fun. I was also a major fan of Divine’s. I mean, who can forget Mondo Trasho? Such a talent.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What does your story say to the young Gay kid in middle America who’s afraid to tell anyone what’s going on with themselves, or the young Transgender girl in the Northeast terrified they’re not going to let her use the right bathroom and she’s going to have to face unimaginable ridicule? How does this story apply to them? How can they relate?

Tab Hunter: I’m not one to give advice.

I never have been. But I can tell you that people have to be truthful to themselves.

You have to go down the road as openly as you can. You have to have an open mind.

Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso meet onstage in MOR opera premiere

by Alice Bloch SGN Contributing Writer MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE AFTER LIFE NORDSTROM RECITAL HALL BENAROYA HALL May 11 Music of Remembrance (MOR) concerts are always worth attending. They invariably offer top-notch performances of an astonishing variety of musical works – particularly astonishing when you consider that this series, now ending its seventeenth season, focuses exclusively on music by Holocaust-era composers and new music inspired by the Holocaust.

The big excitement on May 11 was the world premiere of a one-act opera, After Life, which imagines a posthumous encounter between Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso. MOR Artistic Director Mina Miller commissioned composer Tom Cipullo and librettist David Mason to write the opera after she attended two Stein exhibits in San Francisco and came away with questions about Stein and Picasso’s long, complicated friendship.

As directed by Erich Parce, with a superb chamber ensemble conducted by Stil-

ian Kirov, this intriguing concept became a compelling hour of musical theater. The piece begins with Stein (mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook) emerging groggily from behind Picasso’s famous portrait of her.

She works her way back to consciousness through musical wordplay, in an extended aria showcasing Stein’s tremendous ego – at one point she grabs a magazine off her desk and sings, “I was on the cover of Time.

I!” – and her longing to be reunited with Alice Toklas, whom she calls “Baby Precious” in the opera, as she did in life.

To Stein’s dismay, the person who shows up is Picasso, not Toklas. Picasso (baritone Robert Orth, in a tour de force of singing and acting), expecting to be greeted by one of his many women lovers, is equally disappointed. The duet that ensues is a battle of wills. Picasso struts around, claiming that he is “El toro! El rey!” Stein demands to know what impact her writing has had on the world since her death. She invokes “the cover of Time” so frequently that the refrain becomes sad rather than comical: time has covered some of her glory.

The third character, who enters from the back of the theater, singing her way through the audience, is a young woman (soprano Ava Pine, in a beautiful, moving performance) who once sold a rose to Stein and

Toklas, and who died during the Holocaust.

This character is the heart of the opera. Her dignified humility challenges the arrogance of Stein and Picasso and forces them to face their shortcomings as human beings.

Cipullo gave all three singers difficult parts to sing, with many jumps between low and high notes, long lines without opportunities to breathe, and passages that had to be sung softly at the very top of the singer’s register. All three carried off their performances with great skill. Orth and Pines were especially effective in their roles. Cook’s Stein never quite became a three-dimensional character, but I think that was mostly the fault of Mason, whose libretto doesn’t develop Stein as fully as the two other characters.

Cipullo’s score offered some lovely melodies and interestingly harsh contrasting textures. He used a couple of techniques once too often for dramatic effect: strumming the piano strings to indicate a change of mood, and ending a sung refrain on a high, soft note. Kudos to all the musicians, who made the most of the score: Zart Dombourian-Eby on flute, Laura DeLuca on clarinet, Mikhail Shmidt on violin, Walter Gray on cello, and Craig Sheppard on piano.

I hope MOR will reprise After Life in

a future season. It deserves to be seen and heard more than once.

The concert began with several short chamber works focused on the Paris of Stein and Picasso’s time. DeLuca, Shmidt, and Mark Salman had a lot of fun with Darius Milhaud’s jazzy “Suite for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano.” The song “Le Tsigane dans la Lune,” by Dutch composer Rosy Wertheim, struck me as musically inert and didn’t show off Pine’s voice to advantage, although it gave the excellent Shmidt a chance to shine. “Nuit Calme,” a meditation for cello and piano by another Dutch composer, Henriette Bosmans, was performed ably and expressively by Gray and Miller. (Program notes indicate that Bosmans wrote extensively for cello because of her relationship with cellist Frieda Belinfante.) Paul Bowles’ “Music for a Farce” featured gorgeous trumpet solos by David Gordon, and splendid performances by DeLuca, Salman, and percussionist Matthew Kocmieroski.

MOR will return in the fall with the world premiere of a commissioned dance work: La Revue de Cuisine, choreographed
