The organization said it was worried about Donald Trump’s travel ban and the safety of some of its members.

A life well-lived

by Mark Segal Philadelphia Gay News Over the last few weeks I’ve been interviewed, filmed, taped and recorded numerous times. I’ve also been going through files – or, more like, boxes of papers and objects that haven’t seen the light of day or artificial light literally for decades – for a project I’m involved with.

This process, and it’s one I strongly suggest to all who have collected anything for a long period of time, often brings delightful surprises. You find pieces that explain parts of your life and recall people you’ve interacted with. Even writings from people that are no longer with us or that you no longer associate with are, to say the least, revealing.

It also answers questions. There’s a photo of me at a demonstration next to my friend Doug Carver that’s on the cover of the book Gay Pride: Photographs from Stonewall to Today. I’ve always wondered which demonstration that was taken at, since that first year after Stonewall we had many demonstrations in New York City and I was arrested for the first time, and several subsequent times.

I was able to answer that question through an email from my friend and fellow Gay Liberation Front member this week: It was July 27 1969, one month after Stonewall.

You’ll also be amazed at what you learn about yourself, and maybe even accept what your friends, family and those close to you have been trying to impress upon you without much luck.

highlighted. In my mind, up to this point I used 1976 as a point that changed my life.

Before that was the birth of the radical gayrights struggle, my part in GLF, the Gay Action Group, Stonewall, Gay Youth and my infamous campaign against the TV networks. After 1976 I focused on bringing and organizing local LGBT media into the Gay Press Association, creating a campaign that changed local politics, writing a plan for the nation’s first governor’s commission to study problems in the gay community (which was recently discovered in Gov. Shapp’s personal papers at the State Museum). It was also learning to fund proj-

ects in the community with government funds, helping our community to appreciate that we pay taxes and deserve those funds in our community like others, using clout to create the largest AIDS-awareness day in any city in the nation and creating housing for our LGBT seniors, our first out generation.

That sounds like a resume, and for me it is. My life has been spent on these and surprisingly many other projects. So why list all of it? Recently I’ve watched as numerous young activists have been labeled egotistical from their contemporaries in their fight to bring our community together on issues of diversity, respect and inclusion. This is a message to you: I, too, was attacked by those who differed with my views and actions. But I did what my parents told me to do: “Go with your gut.”

That resume was born from continuing the fight, regardless of those who use your success to further their public profile. Sometimes our community is its own worst enemy. Ignore those who are bitter and instead follow that optimistic view you’ve dreamed. You won’t always be right but history will show you your successes and your failures.

Trumpcare would wipe out gains made by state under ACA, new study says

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer The new Republican health care plan – dubbed Trumpcare by opponents – would wipe out all the gains made by Washington residents under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare), a new study found.

The study, by the State Insurance Commissioner’s office and the Department of Social and Health Services, was unveiled March 15 by Gov. Jay Inslee and State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler.

“It is a disaster for Washington,” Inslee said in a teleconference briefing. The governor said he is writing to the state’s congressional delegation, asking lawmakers to “blow the whistle on this train wreck.”

Under the ACA, 600,000 lower-income Washingtonians have gained coverage through Medicaid expansion, 80% of them in working families. An additional 190,000 enrolled this year in qualified health plans through the state’s Healthplanfinder site.

Overall, the percentage of uninsured fell from 14% in 2013 to only 5.8%.

The number of uninsured was cut by 58% by the ACA but would soar back above pre-ACA levels under the Trumpcare plan, the study found.

Under Trumpcare, the federal subsidy for Medicaid coverage would be abolished, and the current 5.8% uninsured would climb to 15%, “even higher than the 13.5% projected if the Affordable Care Act were just repealed,” said the state study.

“There are currently 410,000 uninsured people in Washington: If Trumpcare takes effect, it will jump to 1.1 million people, higher than it was before the Affordable Care Act,” said Kreidler.

“We are very conservative in these numbers . . . We are lowballing if anything,” said Kreidler.

Ironically, the study found a higher percentage of people are likely to lose health

insurance in rural areas like Cowlitz, Lewis, and Grays Harbor Counties – all of which voted for Donald Trump – than in populous King County, which gave Hillary Clinton a 500,000-vote majority.

The Congressional Budget Office, in an analysis released March 13, said that under

the Trumpcare plan, billions of dollars in tax cuts would flow to investors, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies – nearly $1 trillion over the next decade.

“This is a tax cut for the rich masquerading as health care reform,” Inslee stated.

Also jumping on board the Murray bandwagon were United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) 21, with 45,000 members; Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 1199NW, representing more than 29,000 nurses and health care workers in the state; and International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) 27, representing Seattle’s firefighters and emergency responders.

On the other hand, Murray also drew his highest-profile opponent to date, when activist Nikkita Oliver announced she would run against him.

Oliver, an attorney, community organiz-

er, and spoken-word artist, has been active in Seattle’s Black Lives Matter movement, opposing the building of a new youth jail, and organizing in the Rainier Beach neighborhood.

Oliver even created her own political party – the Peoples Party of Seattle – to offer voters a “community-centered grassroots political party led by and accountable to the people most requiring access and equity,” she says on her website.

The election of Donald Trump made her want to jump into the mayoral race, she explained. “I didn’t want to stand in a place of powerlessness.”

Although Oliver is only one of seven candidates running against Murray, she is

the only one who has the experience and citywide name recognition to be able to give the mayor a run for his money.

While Oliver is not likely to match Murray’s fundraising, she has the background to attract the kind of grassroots volunteers who propelled City Councilmember Kshama Sawant into office. Sawant has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race, but Oliver says she has talked with Sawant about her campaign.

Murray has more than $155,000 in the bank, having already spent an additional $150,000 on his campaign so far. Only bike and pedestrian advocate Andres Salomon has posted campaign donations so far – a meager $3,686.

“State borders shouldn’t dictate whether a person can lose their housing because they’re gay or be rejected for a job because they identify as transgender,” Herbold said in a statement. “Seattle joins with a growing coalition of cities from around the nation to show Congress that the Equality Act has broad support and that America is not a place that tolerates discrimination.”

“The rights and freedoms of every single individual must never be denied,” Harrell added. “Our government at the highest level must be strong leaders in reaffirming our declaration that everybody deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and by our society.”

“Frankly, I’m appalled that there are still states in this nation that enable blatant discrimination against people in our LGBTQ community,” O’Brien said. “The Equality Act will help ensure that LGBTQ Seattleites visiting other states won’t be denied basic services like being seated in a diner or rented a room in a motel.”

“As a former civil rights attorney, I

stood by people who challenged all forms of discrimination,” Gonzalez said. “The Equality Act is not only needed, it is long overdue.”

“I second Councilmember Herbold and her co-sponsors on the City Council for demanding that Congress guarantee equal rights of LGBTQ people nationwide,” Seattle Mayor Ed Murray said. “ Wa sh i ng t on state has had these constitutional and commonsense rights on the books for over ten years. It’s time for members of Congress to stand up to bigotry and protect the LGBTQ community nationally.”

Debbie Carlsen, executive director of LGBTQ Allyship, who worked on the City Council resolution, thanked everyone involved but warned that “the tough work is ahead of us in passing the Equality Act at the federal level.” “[E]very single tool we have to proactively eradicate the attack on our rights is important,” she added. “I’m proud of Seattle for once again leading the nation in fighting for inclusivity and justice.”

The proposed Equality Act would add protections for sexual orientation and gender identity to federal civil rights laws.

Currently, individual states are able to deny access to housing, employment, education, public accommodations, and more because of a resident’s sexual orientation or gender identity. While Washington state law protects LGBT rights, other states do not.

The Equality Act would set a national standard that prohibits discrimination under the law based on gender identity or expression.

Sen. Patty Murray reintroduces Healthy Families Act Creates paid sick days for workers

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer Washington’s US Sen. Patty Murray has reintroduced the Healthy Families Act, legislation that would allow workers to accumulate paid sick days.

Although Seattle passed a paid sick days ordinance in 2012, and Washington state followed suit with I-1433 last year, some 41 million workers across the country still lack paid sick leave and therefore are forced to take time off or risk their jobs when they or family members are ill.

Even when workers have personal sick days, those might not cover the times when a child is ill and needs to stay home from school. That forces many parents to choose between caring for their family or risking their livelihood.

“It is unacceptable that 41 million people across the country have to take time off – or risk losing their job – if they catch the flu, if their child is sick, or if they have to take care of a sick parent,” Murray said in a statement.

“No one should have to choose between their health and their economic security, but our outdated policies are forcing too many workers to make that kind of choice.

I’m proud Washington state continues to be a leader on this issue – and it’s time our national policy catches up to ensure all hardworking families are able to care for themselves and loved ones when they need it the most.”

The Healthy Families Act would allow workers at businesses with at least 15 employees to earn up to 56 hours, or seven days, of paid sick leave each year. Workers would be allowed to stay home when they are ill, to care for a sick family member, seek preventive medical care, or seek assistance related to domestic violence, stalk-

ing, or sexual assault.

Businesses that already provide paid sick leave would not have to change their current policies, as long as they meet the minimum standards of the Healthy Families Act. Studies show that sick paid leave can reduce the spread of contagious diseases

like the flu and that a national paid sick days policy would reduce emergency room visits by 1.3 million annually, saving $1.1 billion a year.

Twenty-nine other senators are cosponsoring the bill, including Washington’s other senator, Maria Cantwell, and both of the Senate’s independents – Bernie Sanders

of Vermont and Angus King of Maine. Not a single Republican senator has signed on.

Murray is ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, which will have jurisdiction over the bill.

Pramila Jayapal, vice ranking member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s budget proposal, which slashes $54 billion in investments important to working families, communities, and public safety: “The Trump budget proposal is a real punch in the gut to the American people. It makes abundantly clear that every critical domestic program important to working families is on the chopping block.

“The $54 billion in proposed cuts would put the health, safety, and security of our communities at risk, as well as seize innovation that powers job growth and economic opportunity.

“Our nation’s budget represents our moral values and our commitment to the future of our country. The Trump budget is a clear betrayal of those values. No lawmaker, Democrat or Republican, can say they support their constituents and vote for this proposal.”

As proposed, the Trump budget would gut the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by $2.6 billion. This reduction could result in the loss of critical EPA funding to restore Puget Sound. It would also cut investments in the Departments of Education, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Health and Human Services by a combined $28.5 billion.

After a US district judge dismissed Evans’ lawsuit, Lambda Legal appealed to the 11th Circuit, arguing that sexual orientation discrimination is a form of sex discrimination and therefore illegal under Title VII. Lambda Legal has a similar suit pending in the 7th Circuit. Both cases

depend on suits brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), in which the agency argues that the Title VII ban on discrimination on account of sex also protects employees against harassment and firing because of their sexual orientation.

In her dissenting opinion, Judge Robin S. Rosenbaum wanted to uphold the EEOC reading of Title VII. “I argue that discrimination against a lesbian because she fails to comport with the employer’s view of what a woman should be violates Title VII’s ban on discrimination ‘because of . . . sex,’ and I support this argument with the text of Title VII, Supreme Court precedent, and this Court’s

opinion in Glenn,” Rosenbaum wrote.

“I also note that logic is on my side. Of course, the [majority of judges] is free to ignore my analysis rather than respond to it, but that doesn’t make it go away.”

Lambda Legal immediately asked for an en banc review in the 11th Circuit – a hearing before all the court’s judges.

“This is not the end of the road for us and certainly not for Jameka,” said Greg Nevins, Employment Fairness Project Director for Lambda Legal.

“Keeping your job shouldn’t depend on whether or not you pass for straight. There is no way to draw a line between sexual orientation discrimination and discrimination based on gender nonconformity, because

not being straight is gender nonconforming, period. Ninety percent of Americans believe that LGBT people should be treated equally in the workplace. The public is on the right side of history, and it’s time for the 11th Circuit to join us.”

Lambda Legal’s 7th Circuit case, brought on behalf of Kimberly Hively, is substantially the same. Hively was forced from her job after a supervisor noticed her kissing her girlfriend.

A federal district judge dismissed Hively’s suit, brought under Title VII, and Lambda Legal then appealed to the Circuit Court. The ruling in that case is still pending.

State Department appoints hate group leader to UN Commission on Status of Women

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer Donald Trump’s State Department will send the leader of an anti-LGBT hate group to the United Nations as one of the US delegates to the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

Austin Ruse, boss of the Center for Family and Human Rights (C-FAM), will be one of the US representatives, the State Department said on March 13. C-FAM is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

The organization is a member of the World Congress of Families, the coalition working with the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and others to export antiLGBT hatred to foreign countries.

Ruse was fired by the American Family Association – itself considered a hate group

by SPLC – last year after a guest-hosting spot on its radio network, during which he declared that liberal university officials “should all be taken out and shot.” Ruse also claimed that a Vatican priest offered him absolution if he were to murder Hillary Clinton.

According to Mother Jones magazine, Ruse is also active in the secret “Groundswell” organization, said to be waging a propaganda war “to fundamentally transform the nation.” The group is led by Ginni Thomas, wife of US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Ruse is married to Family Research Council – yet another hate group – “senior fellow” Cathy Ruse.

In addition to Ruse, an official of the Heritage Foundation – a right-wing think tank – was also appointed to the US delegation. The Heritage Foundation opposes funding for international programs combating violence against women, and claims that anti-discrimination laws grant LGBT people “special privileges.”

Jessica Stern, executive director of OutRight Action International, an international LGBT rights organization, denounced the appointments.

“In their Senate confirmation hearings, Secretary of State Tillerson and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley repeatedly pledged to uphold the right to be free from discrimination as an American value,” she said in a statement.

“The appointment of these organizations to the official US delegation undermines their positions. I urge Secretary Tillerson and Ambassador Haley to ensure that the US delegation maintains nondiscrimination at the CSW in the face of obvious pressure from these newly appointed members of the delegation. Fundamentalist notions about how women and girls should behave should never be the basis of advis-

ing or negotiating US foreign policy.

“It is also a bad sign that two organizations that have tried to delegitimize the United Nations and human rights internationally now sit on the official US delegation. Maybe the violent mentality that got C-FAM labeled a hate group successfully panders to their base, but the US government must ensure protection for the world’s most vulnerable people.”

“We realize we had to stand by our organizational commitment of inclusivity and diversity,” she added. “We talk the talk; we try and walk the walk. We’re an inclusive and a diverse organization, and this is just an extension of that.”

The organization’s new travel policy covers day trips, longer outings, and any travel that includes a connecting flight through a US airport. The Guides are currently looking for an alternative destination to a summer camp in California.

“Not being able to cross a border, can you imagine what would happen?” Kiriliuk asked. “A group shows up at the border and

one girl can’t go across – that puts everybody in a very difficult situation. So, we want to make sure the girls are safe and that we are extending that inclusivity and diversity to all of our trips.”

Most of the Girl Guides’ trips to the US are planned at the regional and local offices, Kiriliuk told the Toronto Star. When a trip is planned, she explained, the organization does a “risk assessment.”

“We are not breaching anyone’s confidentiality,” she said. “The risk assessment will be done within a small circle to assess whether we think whether that trip can safely go ahead or not.”

Traveling teaches independence, she said, especially for young girls with their peers and away from parents.

“There’s a really big learning curve for girls in that sense as well – going across the ocean, far away from home,” Kiriliuk said.

The Girl Guides have some 70,000 members, plus 20,000 adult women who volunteer for the organization.

She is a friendly girl with a lovely smile and a tail that keeps on wagging. Mia likes to chew on Kongs and play with other toys. Mia came to the shelter because her elderly owners are no longer able to physically care for her. Mia is looking for an active and understanding adopter who can provide her with plenty of physical and mental stimulation, as well as an ample supply of tender-loving care. Mia is required to meet any resident dogs and would be more comfortable in a cat-free home.

As with all of our wonderful dogs, Mia has been spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and behavior-tested. She will go home with a certificate for an examination by a King County veterinarian and an identification tag. PLUS, most dog adoptions include 30 days of pet insurance from Trupanion and a training rebate when you complete a dog behavior course - a great way to start off on the right paw!

GREYSON

Meet Greyson, a more-to-love, 7-year-old grey and white domestic shorthair. Greyson is a sweet and gentle fellow who can’t wait to meet his new best friends and family. Greyson is a calm, sweet-natured boy who also has a playful side. He likes to chase string toys or bat around balls of wadded-up paper. He is currently cozied up at PetSmart in Bellevue, a Seattle Humane satellite location. Greyson would love to be the only kitty in his new home so he can be loved by his new best friends with all the attention he deserves.
