Drag Queens, Fashion Designers, Vocalists, DJs, Suspension Artists, Aerialists… you’ll find everybody working together to present over six hours of community-building

collaborations onstage.

What’s unique about AMDEF is that every featured artist is challenged to partner with talent from a different creative background to co-produce each act. This is where weird meets elegance, wild meets so-

phistication, and Art, Music, Dance, Entertainment and Fashion unite.

Many of the acts showcased throughout the night are cultivated between talents who’ve never met. The end result is an eclectic atmosphere of inclusivity for a new and welcoming experience to all attendees.

One of the most distinctive events to hit Seattle each summer, the 7th Annual AMDEF promises to be a sold-out explosion of local, national, and even international acts.

With world-renowned pole dancer Pantera Blackmith returning to her hometown, internationally recognized San Francisco designer GG Connections collaborating with Mr. Seattle Pride 2014 Eric Blu & The Soul Revue, and nationally acclaimed band The Staxx Brothers, this year’s event features 150+ talents for a one-night-only experience. In addition, the entire event benefits local non-profit organization Social Outreach Seattle, uniting under the motto, “We are one community, working together.”

Seems a clairvoyant named Sophie Baker (Emma Stone) has been using her unproven talents on the wealthy Catledge family, mother Grace (Jacki Weaver) certain she’s contacting her dearly departed husband, while supercilious son Brice (Hamish Linklater) claims to be falling in love with the young American.

Never one to back away from a challenge, Stanley eagerly departs for the Catledge’s Côte d’Azur estate in order to debunk Sophie’s powers and show her to be a money-hungry charlatan. Problem is, the arrogant nonbeliever has trouble doing it. More, he’s actually quite smitten with the much younger, exceedingly attractive see Moonlight page 8

Pat Benatar still invincible at 61

by Ken Campbell SGN A&E Writer Pat Benatar is a rock goddess. That’s all I can say about her. She’s like a diva that will kick your ass if provoked, vocally speaking of course. Last Thursday I had the privilege of seeing this lovely legend at the Tulalip Amphitheatre along with her equally legendary opening act, Rick Springfield!

It was like sharing two bottles of fine vintage wine with a few hundred friends. And let me tell ya, time has not diminished this edgy songbird one jot! At 61 years old, she still has the pipes of a lioness and can belt them out with the same ferocity as the day she recorded them. This was her 35th anniversary tour! Yup, Miss Benatar has been rockin’ hard since 1979, which would mean I was only eight years old when she made her debut. One of the favorite stories from my childhood we love to recount in my family is about the day my neighbors saw my mother, completely unaware she had an audience, go flying past the living room window, furiously shaking her shimmy in synch with Pat’s backup dancers to the song “Love is a Battlefield.” She’d probably throw a hip out if she tried that now.

Pat and her guitar savant of a husband were not only celebrating 35 years as a band that night, but also celebrating 33 years of marriage! Not bad in an industry known for its philandering and flash-in-the-pan weddings! Pat and her nimble fingered hubby blasted the crowd with all the hits we’ve

grown to love. “Shadows of the Night,” “Invincible,” “Love is a Battlefield,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Heartbreaker,” and “Promises in the Dark.” It was a wonderful trip back through time.

Rick Springfield was no slouch as the opening act either. Even though he isn’t a spring chicken any longer he still rocked out like a twenty-something. At one point he hopped off the stage and waded deep into the crowd to offer the microphone to anyone willing to sing a verse of “Don’t Talk to Strangers.” For his finale, he brought out Greg Giraldo, Pat’s husband, to help him rock the crowd with the crown jewel of his hits, “Jessie’s Girl.” And rock them he did.

The crowd of fifty-somethings folded up their walkers, set down their cocktails and went absolutely berserk!

Mr. Springfield joined Pat on stage to offer a little guitar backup on her last song as well. Apparently they’re neighbors, or so Pat told us.

I learned some things about Ms. Benatar from this concert that I didn’t know before.

Did you know that she was the second person to be played by MTV at the dawn of its creation? The first, of course, was The Buggles with their singular hit “Video Killed the Radio Star.” I also learned that Pat’s career has not been immune to controversy.

The sordid tale goes like this. One day Pat was reading an article about child abuse that really touched her. The name of the article was “Hell is for Children.” Inspired by the cause and wanting to make a statement to bring the subject into the public eye, she sat down and wrote the hit song by the same name. But apparently some cross-eyed religious busybodies who never bothered to read the lyrics to find out what the song was actually about began burning copies of the hit single and making a huge stink to defame the rock legend. Going off of the title alone, they thought the song was literally about condemning children to Hell rather than its real intent of protecting children.

It seems Pat wouldn’t be the legend she is without a little controversy and a crowd of religious whack jobs trying to smear her name. In this writer’s opinion, that’s the hallmark of a true rock and roller. After all, it isn’t what they say about you that matters.

It’s when they stop talking that you worry, right?

All in all, it was a wonderful evening. It felt like visiting an old friend. I count myself as being truly fortunate to have been able to bask in the awe of this hard-rockin, legendary lady at least once. Pat, you have always been part of the soundtrack of my life and always will be.

If it wasn’t for AMDEF, I would have never been able to put together my dream band L.O.M. (Levels of Movement), who you’ll see performing at

The annual musical development party is here. Village Theatre’s robust Festival of New Musicals is a well-established, nationally and internationally known, incubator of musicals, many of which move on to more development.

Often, one of the festival’s musicals makes it to Village’s next Main Stage season. Once in a while, excitingly, one makes it to Broadway!

Two were next to normal and Million Dollar Quartet. That hope fuels everyone’s ambitions.

The format now is 1) five draft musical “readings” (unmemorized, but rehearsed, with music stands, and zero to rudimentary costuming) that will each be presented onetime only over this weekend, August 8-10 (Friday evening, Saturday matinee and evening, and Sunday matinee and evening) (you must purchase a special Village Originals supporting or starring membership ($150 individual or $250 two individuals) to attend these draft musical “readings”) and 2) one musical that gets a “developmental” production, with full staging and memorization, though only a two weekend run that is open to the general public, 8/8 @ 10 p.m., 8/9 @ 5 p.m., 8/10 @ 11:30 a.m. & 5 p.m., 8/14 @ 8 p.m., 8/15 @ 8 p.m., 8/16 @ 2 p.m. & 8 p.m., 8/17 @ 2 p.m. Tickets for the “developmental” production are $25 general, $20 youth/ senior, FREE for Village Originals members.

The developmental production for this year had its debut last summer as a reading: The Noteworthy Life of Howard Barnes is created by book and lyrics writer Christopher Dimond and composer Michael Kooman. This is a delightful story that will tickle the funnybone of musical theater lovers, with some inside jokes.

Why? Well, the press release says, “Howard Barnes is a perfectly average American guy; he likes baseball and grilling things. That is, until he wakes up to discover that his life has become a musical.” It’s actually not so fun to have your life be a musical and Howard has to go on a quest to find the person who knows how to escape from MusicalLand.

Those who attended the reading last year may feel excited to see what kinds of refinements have taken place over the last year the writers have worked to fix issues they were

concerned about. A talented list of theater professionals is on hand to work on it. The director is Brandon Ivie and cast includes Erik Gratton (Howard Barnes), Michele Ankrim (Maggie), Jeff Steitzer (Von Schwartzenheim), Billie Wildrick (Grace) and ensemble members Danny Kam, Brian Lange, Matt Wolfe, Nick Desantis, Bhama Roget, Heather McQuarrie, Krista Curry and Morgan Pate.

Brandon Ivie reports to me, “Since the reading at Village it has been compressed into one act and a character has been eliminated.” Well, that’s a pretty big change!

Brandon says, “We’ll be discovering a lot about the staging as we get into rehearsals, but it will definitely be fun because the whole cast plays a ton of different characters so finding creative and theatrical ways to play with that aspect will be a blast. There’re also a lot of homages to classic musicals, so finding fun ways to incorporate little nods to those will be fun.

“A reading (the other five musicals) gets 29 hours of rehearsal [preparation before the draft musical “reading”] which goes by in anywhere between four to seven days. We (the developmental production) get about two and a half weeks to stage it and three or four days of tech to put it up. It’s developmental, so it’s fully produced but very bare bones.

“Kooman and Dimond will be around from first rehearsal (on Tuesday) until the closing of the show. We get a day or two in between the first and second weekend to make adjustments so they’ll definitely be around a lot. I know they’re really excited to do work on the show.

“The show has a really broad appeal, I think.

Musical theater lovers will love it because it’s really a big love letter to musicals. But besides that, it’s a comedy, and has the context of a fish out of water that everyone understands and can connect with. And it’s family friendly. There’s a little bit of adult language and some playful violence, but it’s not Sweeney Todd or anything.”

press event inside of Moe Bar. The track features local musician Phil Pilion and the duo says that a music video is forthcoming, set to debut at the AMDEF 2014 event, August 23, 7 p.m.-2 a.m. inside of Neumos (925 E. Pike St.).

AMDEF, now in its seventh year, is a seven-hour nonstop show that features collaborations that cross every art style imaginable. A rap artist might collaborate with a tap dance group and a fashion designer or a dancer could collaborate with a body paint artist and more.

This year’s beneficiary for AMDEF is Social Outreach Seattle, a Seattle-based social justice nonprofit.

Larger than life rapper Billy the Fridge (www.billythefridge.com) has gained local notoriety with the release of three albums – Lunch Box Soldiers, Million Dollar Fantasy Freak Show, and Old Fashioned. Old Fashioned contains his most recognizable effort, a song called “Just a Bill” that is a parody

from the School House Rock song “Just a Bill” sitting on Capitol Hill. Of course, Billy is talking about Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood and not the U.S. Capitol.

DJ Rob Martini (www.robmartini.com), who spins at The Cuff this week, has produced and mixed tracks for local artists for years. He is a club DJ that plays all types of music and regularly puts out new material for himself, or collaborations with other artists like Billy the Fridge.

On “I.Am.Def,” Billy the Fridge raps, “I’m gonna do what I do ‘till my last breath, I am art, I am music, I AMDEF.” The song is about staying true to your art and eventually some good comes out of it. It also sends the message that you can make a statement with art and collaborate with others to inspire the masses.

casting, which for this play allows a welcome diversity to the cast, since it’s unlikely that any particular skin color is called for in the script. That aspect of casting also supports the very contemporary feeling of the play.

James and Sarah stand in a moment of transition. ReACT Theatre is producing this play at the Ethnic Cultural Theater in the U. District.

If casting is 75% of the effort, director David Hsieh cast well. Each of the four players here is well positioned to perform each role. While opening night turned out to be “first audience,” and therefore, the timing and rhythm of performing to others wasn’t settled in, I’m certain that each will deepen into “the pocket” in short order.

Maria Knox plays Sarah as uncomfortable anywhere except on the battlefield, a woman who doesn’t despise others for their “normal” lives, but just can’t seem to fit in anywhere “normal.” Brian Pucheu is James, who after realizing how dangerous their lives have been, and experiencing almost losing Sarah, is determined that he finally wants something different. They are a breed apart, though, as most of us probably can’t begin to imagine life travelling from war to war.

John Bianchi is their friend and editor who has to straddle the divide of business and pleasure. His dialogue, by Margulies, is completely believable and understandable, and his is a character easy to root for. Mona

Leach plays his new girlfriend who is vacuous, but friendly, and gets to deliver most of the humor in the play. But Margulies allows her to grow. She represents all of us who want to, and mostly do, ignore the wars devastating other parts of the world.

Interestingly, or unfortunately, or bemusedly, Margulies allows three characters to speak their truths and their struggles, and therefore we begin to “know” them. However, he never does let Sarah speak her truth. We see scenes after she has made decisions, but never know how those decisions were arrived at. We see the consequences, but not the determinations.

So by the end of the play, we still know almost nothing about Sarah. This stands out as a weakness in the play.

Otherwise, Margulies is an accomplished dialogist and the characters are interesting and have a lot to say. The setting is contemporary, and without hitting you over the head, reminds you that there is war going on right this minute in Gaza/Israel, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other places that we’re likely in the theater to not think that much about. There is subtle commentary about how much magazine space war coverage gets in order to maintain sales.

Provocative Latin American political drama opens on stage in September DEATH AND THE MAIDEN LATINO THEATER PROJECTS SEPTEMBER 5-28 Latino Theater Projects, Seattle’s premiere professional Latino Theatre company, once again will be presenting a provocative Latin American play in September. At the Ballard Underground, LTP will stage the riveting political psychodrama Death and the Maiden by dissident Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman from September 5-28.

With Death and the Maiden, LTP is digging into the human side of oppression and societal evils. Character Paulina Salas was tortured and raped as a political prisoner during a repressive military dictatorship in an unnamed South America country. Years later, she is still haunted by those experiences. Her husband, Gerardo, has been appointed to a kind of “truth and reconciliation” commission to uncover the abuses of the former regime. Chance puts a man, Dr. Miranda, who may or may not have been her oppressor, in her isolated home. Will she turn the tables and seek revenge, or will her husband’s responsibilities to right the wrongs of the past stand in her way?

You will have to see the play to find out.

The play stands at the crossroad of justice, deeply buried wrongs, and personal strength and identity. This dynamic is relevant to many audiences, including the LGBT community. Anyone who has experienced political or societal rejection will relate to the central dilemma of the plot.

“We carefully chose this Latin American theatre jewel. It resonates with current events such as the ongoing debate about the American government employing torture techniques with suspected terrorists,” said Fernando Luna, Artistic Director. “We all need to put such actions in the context of human rights. The play brings this perspective into focus on the most human level.”

Fernando Luna, the Artistic Director of LTP, has assembled an amazing array of creative artists to make this production one of the highest standards. The cast includes actors who are fixtures of Seattle’s professional theater scene including Frank Lawler, Tonya Andrews and Luna himself. The design team includes veterans of many of Seattle’s top theatres.

They include stage director Emma Watt, set and costume director Kristina Hestenes-Stimson, lighting designer Zanna Paulson, sound designer Joshua Blaisdell, stage manager Lisa Harrington, and fight choreographer Tom Dewey.

As leaders with an interest in promoting social change, Fernando Luna and Robert Harkins founded Latino Theatre Projects in 2011 as a vehicle to bridge gaps between the Latino community and Seattle’s general population. Death and the Maiden is their sixth production as they are building and attracting a diverse and growing audience for their work. Previously, they have primarily worked in Seattle’s South End. Moving to the Ballard Underground is a first step in getting their important work before a broader audience in Seattle’s neighborhoods.

“Our work appeals to diverse communities, not just the Latino community,” said Artistic Director Fernando Luna. “Our work has included LGBT, feminist, immigrant, and Latino themes. Performing in the heart of Seattle brings these themes directly to all of Seattle.”

SIFF REACHES FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR EGYPTIAN THEATRE REOPENING

The Seattle International Film Festival has announced the results of their capital campaign to reopen the Egyptian Theatre.

With generous match offers from two anonymous philanthropists and several ways to give – including a uniquely successful “Text2Give” component – SIFF is pleased to announce that they’ve hit their match offers and exceeded their goal of $300,000. Having now hit nearly $340,000, the organization is on track to reopen the theatre – to be called SIFF Cinema Egyptian – by October 1, 2014.

“To come full circle and have a home once again at the Egyptian means so much to me personally, and to everyone at SIFF,” says Carl Spence, SIFF’s Artistic Director.

“We are excited to reopen the SIFF Cinema Egyptian in October and look forward to being an active member of the Capitol Hill community.”

The organization secured a lease for the iconic Capitol Hill venue and subsequently launched a fundraising campaign to raise funds for the necessary improvements and

operational costs to get started.

The donations will go to necessities to reopen the theatre: Critical repairs – electrical, plumbing, ventilations, and the exterior marquee Equipment – projector, server, and computers for the projection booth Operating costs, cleaning, maintenance, and staffing Improvements to the theatre’s interiors and sound system “We’re pleased by this support from the community,” says Mary Bacarella, SIFF’s Managing Director. “This is the largest amount of money that we’ve ever raised in the shortest amount of time through crowdsourcing, and the anonymous match offers got us off the ground. These gestures speak both to the deep connection Seattle has to the theatre and to its faith in SIFF, for supporting having this beloved venue in our hands.”

woman, his feelings starting to cloud his judgment, making him believe her clairvoyant skills might in fact be legitimate.

Woody Allen’s latest is a frothy, somewhat acid-laced, yet overall quite harmless, romantic trifle entitled Magic in the Moonlight. As far as the Annie Hall and Manhattan auteur is concerned, the film

does not come close to rising to the same heights of any of his classic works, not even the relatively recent sensation Midnight in Paris. It’s second tier Allen, yet admittedly in the upper echelons of that group, more Blue Jasmine than To Rome with Love, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion than Scoop.

The frustrating thing is that, for at least the first half, maybe a bit more than that, the movie showcases the potential to be something special, working in many of the same

foamy, breathlessly idiosyncratic, yet still remarkably romantic ways as Allen favorites The Purple Rose of Cairo and Alice.

Stanley’s an insufferable prig, difficult to warm to and in many ways even harder to like. But watching him melt in Sophie’s presence? Seeing his emotional walls crumble as she turns on her seemingly effortless charm? It’s humorously divine, all the character’s insecurities and long-held beliefs coming into stark contrast with his growing, almost all-consuming infatuation with the very woman he’s been tasked with revealing as a fake.

Firth is wonderful. His embodiment of this character is full, utterly immersive, the Oscar-winner disappearing inside of Stanley as he mines every crevice and fiber of his being. More than that, his chemistry with Stone is off the charts, making it easy to believe he could lose his heart (along with a small part of his mind) to Sophie in spite of their obvious age difference just from being in her presence without having to utter a single word. The actor goes from being distinctly unlikeable to unequivocally lovable with exquisite grace, moving from one emotional epiphany to the next with heavenly dexterity.

The problem is, at a certain point the movie runs out of sleeves to hide all its hidden cards. More than that, it almost feels as if Allen himself loses interest in the very story he’s concocted. The fun dissipates, if

not entirely, then to a point that seeing how things work out isn’t nearly as important or as worthwhile as it should be. The mechanics of the central mystery as to whether or not Sophie is all she proclaims to be and whether or not Stanley is going to be okay with the answer, positive or negative, isn’t particularly interesting nor is it all that important, lessoning the emotional impact of the climactic events substantially.

Thankfully, the movie has more than enough in the way of positives to make up for most, mind you not all, of its shortcomings. As already stated, Firth is incredible, while Stone has enough spunky angelic energy to make even the more ephemeral and nondescript aspects of her personality come to life in ways they otherwise wouldn’t have.

Best of all is Eileen Atkins as Stanley’s wise, sarcastically blunt Aunt Vanessa, the British legend stealing scenes left and right every time she waltzes into the frame.

If only Magic in the Moonlight knew what to do with itself as it comes to its fully anticipated finale, the climactic dynamics between Stanley, Sophie and all the rest nowhere near as interesting, enlightening or humorous as I hoped they’d be. The film is lesser Allen, but that doesn’t make it not without merit – how many of them it has dependent entirely on how much the viewer is willing to forgive the rather shallow emotional dramatics the picture ultimately chooses to revel in.
