2021-2022 Annual Report

From the Head of School

Dear St. George’s Community,

Despite having begun the year with the continued implementation of COVID-19 mitigation strategies, the 2021-2022 academic year was incredibly significant in numerous ways. We again experienced our highest enrollment to date, our students earned various first place titles at the state literary competition, along with coming in 1st at the region competition in One Act. In the sports realm, we had several individual winners of state championships, two of our athletes made an all-state team, and we had our second student in SGES history to sign with a university for an athletics scholarship. The class of 2022 logged over 1900 service hours, they were accepted to 38 different colleges across the country, including St. George’s first Ivy League acceptance, and they were awarded over $1,000,000 in scholarships, excluding the HOPE and Zell totals. For the fourth consecutive year, our SGES STAR Student won the STAR Student of Lamar County distinction. We exceeded our Annual Giving Fund goal of $125,000, and this year’s Get-Away-Gig was a great success as well.

We are so blessed as an educational institution to have such strong leadership from our administrative team, coupled with a dedicated faculty and staff who remain steadfast in working daily to ensure that we provide the best college preparatory educational program in our area, while inspiring children to learn with passion, serve with respect, live with purpose and lead with integrity. Our students continue to amaze and inspire us with all that they achieve each year, while working hard to juggle the rigors of our curriculum with sports and other extracurricular activities. We are immensely grateful for the tremendous support from parents, grandparents, and community members, along with our active Board of Trustees committed to ensuring that SGES remains poised for success in the years to come through strategic planning.

In the pages that follow, you will find highlights from the numerous things that made the 2021-2022 academic year so special for us all. While we will cherish those memories, we look with great anticipation to all that the upcoming year has in store. We are sincerely grateful for the numerous ways that you have supported St. George’s during the past year. It is your generosity and our partnership that enables us to provide such amazing educational experiences for our students. Thank you very much for your continued support and Go Dragons!

The Little Mermaid, Jr. learn with passion

The fine arts education at St. George’s begins in our youngest PK3 class because we know how important the arts are to intellectual and emotional development. As students grow, there are increasing outlets for self expression in music, visual arts, and performing arts classes. Students of all ages are given the opportunity to explore fine arts through classroom instruction, extra-curricular clubs, and competitions. Each year, students participate in a school-wide drama presentation. Students in PK3 through 8th grade participate in music classes that include both classical and modern instruments. High school students are given the opportunity to participate in electives and an extracurricular literary meet. Art classes begin in PK3 and include drawing and painting techniques, pottery courses, and Advanced Placement art classes. Students enjoy a fine arts education at St. George’s. They are given opportunities to discover their own interests and cultivate those discoveries as they grow. Music, art, and drama encompass a rich fine arts program at St. George’s Episcopal School.

serve with respect

Student Council

The Middle School Student Council works on several projects each year to help serve both the school and the community. Each Christmas, Student Council participates in the Salvation Army Angel Tree project to purchase toys for a family. Projects are not limited to Student Council as students across all grades enjoy opportunities to help others locally, nationally, and globally through their education at St. George’s.

Key Club Blood Drive

The Key Club introduced a new service opportunity to St. George’s this year by sponsoring a community wide blood drive. This event was a tremendous success. Because of their hard work and the high number of blood donors, the club received a grant to continue their service to the community, which will help them continue to offer blood drives in the future.

Chapel Acolytes

Students have an opportunity to lead in Chapel Services each day. Middle School students primarily serve as acolytes during chapel, but Early Childhood and Lower School students also have opportunities to serve. Scripture readers, musicians, acolytes, and students who lead in prayers are all ways that students serve in leadership roles in daily chapel services.

live with purpose

Elective Classes

SGES students in grades 4-8 enjoy our elective program which enables them to choose classes on a wide range of topics. Classes this year included robotics, yoga, crochet, journalism, teaching early childhood skills, microscopes, space exploration, yearbook, outdoor physical education games, American heroes, nature, legos, and more. Not only are many of these electives STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) oriented, but these fun, interactive classes allow students of different ages to spend time together while developing interests that can be enjoyed outside of regular academic studies.

Celebration Walks

When St. George’s students have big accomplishments, the entire school celebrates the achievement! Celebration Walks are schoolwide recognitions for athletic and arts based awards. Students who have placed first at state meets receive special recognition for working hard to achieve their goals and pursuing their interests. Clapping, shouting, cheers, and a walk around campus make for a fun celebration for everyone on campus!

Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies is a program designed to give older students an opportunity to interact with and lead younger students. The students enjoy reading together and participating in other character building activities. Book buddies gives the younger students an opportunity to boost their confidence in reading. It is also designed for older students to serve as role models and for students to develop relationships with one another. Students are excited to read together, and enjoy other activities like creating seasonal crafts, playing educational board games, and participating in social studies and science projects.

lead with integrity

College Advisement

Students work hard during their entire High School studies to get into the college of their choice. Working with the College Counseling Office at St. George’s, students develop a unique and individualized college plan as early as ninth grade. By their senior year, the faculty continue to work with students as they prepare for college admissions.

Beta Club

The mission of the National Beta Club is to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership among students across the nation. Students at St. George’s are recognized as Beta Club members when they exhibit high academic achievement, exemplify worthy character, and display leadership and a commitment to serving others.

College Signing

St. George’s is proud to celebrate when students achieve success. Students who sign with colleges to play in athletic programs are invited to sign with their chosen school as a part of Celebration Chapel.

House Competitions

The purpose of the St. George’s House System is to foster a sense of community between grade levels and across divisions. The House system fosters relationships, teamwork, and leadership development. The teams have four competitions each year. The last competition of the year is the annual Field Day, where students play games on our campus, such as kickball, flag football, hockey, relay races, and the annual eighth grade water balloon fight.
