The Singapore Cricket Club proudly presents the 69th Edition of the SCC International Rugby 7s (SCC 7s). Held once again at The Padang, the tournament has become part of the fabric of Singapore rugby with participations from many top teams from around the globe.

This year’s line-up will be no less with returning teams – Penguins from the UK, PNG, Casuarina Cougars from the land Down Under, and Fijian favourite, Daveta, returning after a one-year hiatus. The tournament
This year will see several cosmetic enhancements to the tournament, providing spectators an up-close view at the heart of the action and a cosy atmosphere for all spectators.

Dear Members,
The Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s will be held in a few days from 4 to 6 November at the historic Padang. Now in its 69th year, this signature tournament attracts some top international teams and players and this year we will be privileged to have at this tournament several of the victorious Fijian 2016 Olympics Rugby 7s Gold medal winning side gracing our event. A sporting event such as the SCC R7s holds much significance in upholding the tradition and heritage of the Club. We are optimistic that with your continued support we will witness many more years of worldclass rugby action. Still on the sports front, I would like to congratulate SCC, winners of the 39th Annual Pot Games hosted by The Tanglin Club. The Pot Games is a great example of camaraderie and outstanding sportsmanship enjoyed by the two clubs over the years.

The Club is encouraged that we have met the Membership Sales target for the first month since the appointment of the new Membership Sales Manager in September 2016. As some long term members seek to relinquish their membership, the Membership Sales Manager will seek to freshen our membership base with new members who will contribute to the wonderful sports and social atmosphere of our club. The exciting Night Race Fiesta held in September concluded on a high note with members and guests enjoying the racing action on the circuit as well as the sumptuous spread of food and beverage at the Club. In fact, I am pleased to note that F&B revenue increased splendidly over the three-day weekend, ‘topping out’ the past year. This has been made possible with your support of the Club’s signature event. Enjoy the year-end festivities at the Club with your family and friends with our traditional Christmas Eve Lucky Draw as well as the New Years’ Eve Countdown Ball. The Mexican-themed affair this year promises plenty of good cheer, laughter and merriment. What better way to round off the year and welcome in a brand new one. We look forward to seeing more of you at these events in the coming months. I wish all Members warm season’s greetings and a joyous New Year at the Club.

George Abraham Extensions to the main Clubhouse was completed in the early 1900s. Today, it is an iconic building at the very heart of the Civic District. Viewed from the top of the new National Gallery, the Clubhouse stands out, reflecting both its age and its long history as a silent witness to the trials and tribulations of nationhood. The Clubhouse has been designated a Heritage Building therein prohibiting any alterations to the existing facade.

That this venerable old building continues to be maintained in pristine condition is a tribute to the dedication of our loyal staff - Ms Judy Ting (with SCC 27 years), Ms Norliah (28 years), Mr Ibrahim (28 years), four maintenance staff, six changing room attendants and four cleaners (two more being recruited by end October 2016). It is an ongoing challenge to maintain and upkeep this remarkable and prestigious building both internally and externally. The Property Subcommittee tasked with maintaining the Clubhouse meets every month to review the requirements of the Clubhouse interiors and exteriors - housekeeping, maintenance, fire safety, security, carpark operations and also miscellaneous feedback from members. Subcommittee members include: Retna Sabapathy, Andrew Moore, Parasuram Krishnan, Ong Chin Leong and Andrea Nicholas with the GM in attendance.

Rectification works for AHU serving the Padang Restaurant.
1. Re-upholstery of the Padang Restaurant’s dining chairs.

Installation of VRV system for the Main Lounge additional air-con system.
2. To replace carpets at the Padang Restaurant, Gilmour Room and Stumps.
3.
Replacement of Chengal timber decking for the Stumps Terrace.
3. To sand down and revarnish the timber flooring and to patch and revarnish the bar counter at Stumps.
4.
Installation of decorative lantern lights at the main entrance and side walls.
4. Replacement of wicker furniture at Gilmour and Stumps Terraces.
5.
Checked floor loading -Stumps and Gilmour Terraces.
6.
Repainted wooden blinds and columns at both verandahs to dark green.
5. To conduct a rigorous “condition survey” of the Clubhouse.
7.
Installed oscillating fans at the Oval Verandah and the designated smoking area.
8.
Replacement of carpet at MSD, the staircase between the Men’s Bar and the men’s toilet and the staircase leading to the Padang Lounge.

Replacement of wicker chairs at the Courtyard.

ANNUAL STAFF FUND Members are hereby invited to voluntarily contribute to the SCC Staff ‘Annual Ang Pow Fund’. It is an SCC “tradition” that this contribution amounts to the equivalent of one month’s subscription and the fund will be fully dispersed in the month of Chinese New Year as an ex-gratia payment that is equally distributed amongst all members of staff. This is the only occasion in the year when members may show their appreciation to Club employees in this manner. In keeping with recent practice, the amount will be debited to members’ accounts and will appear in the October 2016 Statement of Account. This contribution as previously stated is wholly voluntary and members may give written notice prior to 31 December 2016 should you choose to make a smaller; or larger donation or of course, no donation at all. We would also be pleased to accept an email notification as to your choice of option to ang.pow@ scc.org.sg. On behalf of all SCC employees, Management takes this opportunity to thank you for your patronage and support of the Club and its staff over this past year.

SCC warmly welcomes Behind every successful organisation is a team of dedicated staff. The SCC recently welcomed two dynamic individuals to serve in the capacity of Financial Controller and Membership Sales Manager. Read on for a brief introduction of Gow Hui Yian and Valerie Ong.
Gow Hui Yian FINANCIAL CONTROLLER It has been over a month since I joined the SCC family and there has never been a dull day at work. I experienced the exciting Night Race Fiesta and it was great to see the entire team working in unison. My portfolio as SCC’s Financial Controller is varied and interesting. I will soon be involved in the annual budgeting process and along the way learn the full operations of the Club. I am thankful for the full support of the various committee members, General Manager Mr Alan Jones, and the staff of SCC. In my leisure time, I practise pilates which I chanced upon three years ago. It keeps me agile and ready to take on new challenges at SCC. I hope to see the Club continue to grow as one of Asia’s premier sports and social club for our Members and I look forward to a great working experience with the team.

MEMBERSHIP SALES MANAGER I was formerly an Accounts Executive with the SCC Finance Department. Today I am proud to serve as Membership Sales Manager for the Club – undoubtedly with big shoes to fill. My focus in the coming months would be to increase membership sales revenue which is critical to the Club’s performance in the long run. When not involved in club tours and engaging with interesting individuals. I enjoy baking and whipping up delicious treats for my friends and family. I feel blessed to be surrounded by a great bunch of colleagues which makes working at the SCC that much more interesting. I am always on the lookout for new prospects so do approach me if your friends or associates are interested in being part of our vibrant club with its rich history and tradition at the heart of the Civic District. Rules on the bidding process: 1.
The bidding commences on 1 November 2016 at 0900hrs and ends on 6 January 2017 at 1700hrs. It is a closed bid and each member is only allowed one (01) bid.

A form will be made available for bidding at the Member Services Desk and on the SCC website. Bidding may not be done by email or phone calls. Drop your bid in a box placed at the Member Services Desk. Submitted bid cannot be withdrawn.

The minimum bids for an auspicious number are as follows: - Category A $1,000 - Category B $1,800 - Category C $2,000 - Category D $2,800 - Category E $3,000

The membership number is strictly non-transferable.

The member with the highest bid wins the right to the number. If there are two similar bidding prices (on the highest bid), both members will be invited to make a second bid not lower than the initial bid.

Full payment must be made within seven (07) working days after the bid result is notified to the member with the winning bid.

The bidding box will be opened by a Head of Department (witness) and two other SCC staff. Results must be tabulated within two (02) working days.

RECENT EVENTS
It was a thrilling high octane weekend at the Singapore Cricket Club during its Night Race Fiesta held from 16 – 18 September. Members and guests turned up ready to watch the racing action on the Marina Bay street circuit. Strategically placed big screens around the Club ensured members caught all the highlights of the 2016 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix street race. Within the Club, there was plenty to be enjoyed with the extensive buffet spread at various locations. Members were also entertained by the friendly table-top girls. They also had plenty of fun posing for photos in the photo booth which was modelled after a vintage car. With endless entertainment, delicious food and beverages all around, it was an exhilarating weekend to remember. The SCC sincerely thanks its members for their valued patronage at this years’ Night Race Fiesta.

On behalf of the Games Control Board Subcommittee, I am pleased to share that through the continuous efforts of all the Convenors and Sports Sections, we have streamlined the budgets for 2016 projection and are working progressively towards a leaner budget for 2017. The GCB is looking to make substantial and productive changes in our sports as well as sports budget. Among the changes are: • Sports Injury Insurance coverage is now taken up by members individually. Only Junior Sports Members are covered. • All coaching will be made self-funded. • All tour subsidies have substantially been reduced. Special thanks to the Cricket, Rugby, Hockey and Soccer Sections that have voluntarily forgone all club tour subsidies in a commendable effort to be more mindful of adhering to the budget. • The entertainment grant as a fixed quantum per section to host visiting clubs/teams will be reviewed. GCB would like to thank all our colleagues for their great support in helping the Club as we face formidable challenges in the renewal of the Padang lease and managing our finances while

constantly striving to uphold our sporting traditions and heritage. On the social side, there has been a significant increase in sports functions and after-match drinks. The sections are encouraged not only to play but to also spend more social time at the Club. I urge all members to join a section not just for the chosen sport but also to immerse themselves in their various monthly social activities which would help grow your network of friends exponentially. We have also started promoting a wider range of beverages and snacks menu at the Dempsey Field to increase the F&B revenue. Let’s all work to drive up our revenues there. To further build our SCC brand name, the sports sections have organised various events: Billiards & Snooker invited world ranked No. 3 Rob Hall and No. 23 Gary Norman for an exhibition game; Soccer organised a coaching camp with FC Porta; Cricket is in the process of inviting Brian Lara, a legend of the game to SCC. Lastly, I would like all members to lend their support for the upcoming 69th SCC International Rugby 7s which is happening from 4 to 6 November 2016. For all avid sports fans what can be more exciting than meeting the gold medallist players of the Rio Olympics 2016. The eight members of the SCC Rugby Section who had lost their lives in the tragic bombing of the ill-fated Paddy’s Bar in Kuta, Bali on 12 October 2002 were remembered in a memorial service held at the Padang. The dawn service on 12 October 2016 marked the 14th anniversary of the calamity. Chris Kays, Tim Arnold, Neil Bowler, Chris Bradford, Dave Kent, Peter Record, Chris Redman and Charlie Van Renen were on a rugby tour at the time of the attacks. The memorial service was attended by members of the Rugby Section, members from other sports sections, attendees from other clubs around the region as well as the General Committee. The SCC remembers and pays tribute to the lives lost that fateful day.

3RD INVITATIONAL BALUT INTER-CLUB COMPETITION On 10 September, an SCC team of 11 regular baluteers, plus one independent (Eileen Chu) and one supporter (Cathy Yeomans) joined a total of 84 contestants in Kuching for this competition magnificently hosted by the Sarawak Club. This proved to be another excellent tour and a chance to meet up with friends from so many clubs in East Malaysia. Congratulations to Joyce Foster and Rosemary Tessensohn for keeping the SCC flag flying by achieving second place in the pairs competition.

39TH ANNUAL POT GAMES – BALUT COMPETITION This was royally hosted by The Tanglin Club on 1 October. Each team consisted of 18 players, divided into pairs. There was friendly rivalry, a lot of fun and a non-ending supply of delicious snacks and beverages. SCC won convincingly in the end (after eight games) by amassing a total of 14,032 points versus TC’s 13,322 – a margin of 710 points. Jasmin Fisher was overall top points scorer with 862 points, aided and abetted by John Taylor who finished second with 840 points. As if things couldn’t get better, the evening rounded off by a superb prize-giving dinner in the resplendent Churchill Room where SCC was the proud recipient of the 2016 Pot trophy. Saturday Afternoon Balut On Saturday afternoon,October 8th, there was a special In-house Balut event organised. We had 18 players, and 8 Balut rounds. The highest points aggregate prize winners were Raj Kumar, A. N. Balagopal, and Yeoh Foo Yong with 856, 847 and 805 Sunita presents to spot prize winner Bala respectively. Convenor Tony had the highest individual column total (139 points),and Soma Devi again secured the coveted ‘mini’ Chivas by anchoring the table bottom with 630 points. These games were interspersed with much fun and laughter and we now plan to make Saturday afternoon Balut a regular event every 1-2 months from February next year. NOV / DEC 2016 THE PADANG

Inter-Club Invitational Snooker Tournament at Penang Sports Club

The month of September was a fairly busy month for the Billiards & Snooker Section. We were honoured by the visits of two world ranking players – Rob Hall (World No.3) and Gary Norman (World no.23) on 15 September. We had wonderful exhibition games with them against some of our finest players. Having witnessed them play, I have to admit that more than any other sports, snooker suffers from the problem of the pros making it look easy.

The next day, 12 players made their way to Penang to participate in the ‘mother-of-all’ tournaments, the PSC (Penang Sports Club) Inter-Club Snooker on 17 September. On the day of arrival, we played our Interport game with Penang Club. We played a couple of good games, which also served as a warm-up and preparation for the tournament proper the next day.
On the 22 September we held our AGM. Everyone was pleased with the management of the section and no issues were raised during the meeting. The incumbent Convenor Desmond Decker was returned unopposed. Jason Teo picked up the Captain’s cap from me and I was made to skirt my way as the Secretary. We also have David Yim as our new Treasurer. Though David might be a new face in the committee, he is no stranger to the section and great supporter of our tours. The rest of the committee comprises of Peter Gilchrist, Victor Yeong and Matthew Lim. This has to be the shortest and friendliest AGM I have ever witnessed.
With the gentlemen from Royal Bangkok Club there, having chosen to play Interport at Penang Club the same day, it was obvious we were not the only ones with the same ulterior motive. The gracious folks at Penang Sports Club, being the ever hospitable people they were, managed to play and entertain both clubs with ease. The tournament on the following day consisted of 16 teams from Thailand, Singapore, East Malaysia and West Malaysia. They were Old Xavarian Association, Old Frees Association, Penang Club, Sitiawan Recreation Club, Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club, Royal Selangor Club, The Raintree Club, Royal Lake Club, Royal Bangkok Sports Club, RBSC Polo Club, Negri Sembilan CRC, Tawau Recreation Club, Kuala Muda CRC, Penang Sports Club (two teams) and Singapore Cricket Club. We fielded Glen Yeo, Gerard Ee, Jason Tan, Matthew Lim, and Victor Yeong for both the singles and doubles. With all clubs fielding their finest, the competition was fought tooth and nail but without any animosity. Along with the losses, there was also laughter over our own inane moves and great sportsmanship. The competition took two days to complete. Our gallant players made it all the way to the finals. Our final games were played against RBSC Polo Club. Both finalists 44

It was a great tournament and a great opportunity to meet new friends with diverse and interesting backgrounds. Kudos to Penang Sports Club for organising a tournament of such magnitude without any hitch.
At the time of writing our Peter Gilchrist is away in New Zealand and has won the Auckland Billiards Open and the New Zealand Billiards Open Championship. Congratulations Peter! On 1 October, we played The Tanglin Club at the Annual Pot Games at their turf. The result was 7-0 in our favour. We won five singles and two doubles games. It was a walk in the park for our tournamenthardened players. We are in the midst of planning an exciting Christmas dinner on 2 December. Details will be announced soon via email. Lion City Cup 2016 - An International Event of Bowls Singapore sanctioned by World Bowls We entered two “Teams” (each consisting of a Men’s Pair & a Women’s Pair) identified as SCC “A” & SCC “B”. In Sectional Play SCC “A” ranked 2nd in Section A & SCC “B” ranked 1st in Section C & both Teams proceeded to the Quarter Finals. In QF2, SCC “B” won against STRC & proceeded to the Semi Finals but in QF3, SCC “A” came up against a very strong Malaysia “C” & lost. STRC & ELBC were the only 2 Singapore clubs other than SCC to reach the Quarter Finals. In SF1, SCC “B” lost against Malaysia “B”. SF2 was a contest between Malaysia “C” & Malaysia “A” which Malaysia “C” won & in the Final Malaysia “B” who had earlier won against SCC “B”, won again to take the Lion City Cup 2016. The last four in the competition were the three Teams from Malaysia & SCC “B” who were Joint 3rd & took a Bronze. The SCC Teams were SCC “A” - Hui Kai/Melvin (Men) & Ming Li/Shermeen (Women) & SCC “B” - Edmund/Christian (Men) & 2 from Candy/ Amira/Mary (Women). Congratulations to both Teams for reaching the Quarter Finals & to SCC “B” for reaching the Semi Finals in this International Event! And at Home… Drawn Pairs 2016 We select teams for international, national & inter-club events and that’s when the Selection Committee gets down to serious business but when we “select” teams for “Drawn” events the names are drawn out of the hat (or two or more hats). And that’s how we came up with some interesting pairings this year. Sectional play ended with the 4 Pairs of Retna/Rosemary, ECB/ Chai, Ben/Rodger & Anwar/Mary standing tall. These were all strong Pairs & if called upon to select four mixed Pairs to represent the Club the Selection Committee might have come up with something not too different. As it happened the only two Pairs left with a lady & a man met in one Semi Final. After a seesaw battle the game ended with Anwar/Mary on the up-swing & a ticket to the Final. The other semi-final saw ECB/Chai in top form & fight hard & well as they did Ben/Rodger just couldn’t turn things round & ECB/Chai were through to the Final. In the finals, Anwar/Mary got off to a fine start & near the half way mark they were comfortably ahead at 7-3. The man/man Pair then found another gear & took the next 11 shots while conceding only 2 to run off Winners of Drawn Pairs 2016 with the score of 14-9! In the match for 3rd place the other man/man Pair of Ben/Rodger muscled their way on the slow Green to a 22-6 win for the Bronze. Congratulations to ECB/Chai, Anwar/Mary & Ben/Rodger!

McKean Cup - Singles Championship of the Club for Men The 2016 edition of this event has reached the Final which will be played on October 15 which is just too late for this issue of Padang. In the Quarter Finals Edmund d Christian, Euan d Chai, Menon d ECB & Melvin d Zoher & in the Semi Finals Melvin d Edmund & Euan d Menon to set the stage for an exciting Final. W A Rose Bowl - Singles Championship of the Club for Ladies The 2016 edition of this event has also reached the Final to be played the same day as the Men’s Final. The competition format was a single round League followed by a Final play-off between the first & second ranked players. Amira won all her games in the League & will meet Shermeen in the Final & what an exciting Final this is going to be. And Inter Club… Bowls in the Tanglin Club v SCC for the Pot As usual this event attracted a large number of entries. Not as usual the competition format agreed was 5 Rinks of Mixed Fours & the Winners were to be decided by Rink Wins. It was a hot August day & at the Bell signaling the last End there were clear Wins on Rinks 2 & 6 Delivering the Bowl in the Pot for SCC & on Rink 4 for TC for a 2-1 lead to SCC with Rinks 3 & 5 to decide the Winners. On Rink 5 SCC was 3 Shots Up on the Board but it looked quite miserable at the Head! TC needed 3 to tie or more to win. And how close they came! They were held to 2 Shots for an SCC win. This was enough for an overall Win for SCC but the teams on Rink 3 were not to know. They had their own problems. On Rink 3 the story was the other way round. There, on the Board TC was a comfortable 3 Shots Up but at the Head there was hope & only hope for SCC. They needed 4 for a Win & 4 they did get! The final score was SCC 4 Wins, TC 1 Win & an overall Win for SCC. SCC was represented by (Rink 2) Euan, KC, Ming Li & Amira; (Rink 3) Jenny, Menon, Lew Foong & Chai; (Rink 4) Anwar, Retna, Rosemary & Mary; (Rink 5) Prem, Purush, Hui Kai & Melvin; (Rink 6) Ganesh, ECB, Edmund & Christian. The section members are now more geared to take part in competitions and host games as well. For a start, SRC, Keppel Club, Kembangan and SCC have agreed to play a quarterly friendly game to give members more opportunities to practice in competitive games. The National Day event held on 15 August was a huge success as it was a full house. Befitting to the occasion, the menu consisted of local delights such as Chicken Rice and Gado Gado. The winning pairs of the evening were Alice Bloodworth/Perumal Ramanathan and Gobind Kirpalani/Chris Wong.
There will be a Deepavali event on 7 November followed by the traditional Christmas event. This is when awards are given to the best partnership of the year and the best individual player. The section members can look forward to great food, drinks and prizes and the section looks forward to greater participation from the section members to all events organised.
The Pot Games hosted by The Tanglin club was held on 1 October. The response from the section members was very encouraging. Eight pairs participated with three members agreeing to be substitutes if required. Players donned the new SCC T-shirts contributing to their bonding and identity. Ready to start the Pot Games

SCC COMBINED VS INDIAN CRICKET TEAM FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED SCC Cricket Section fielded a Singapore combined XI with players ranging from SCC U15 to Div-1, whilst providing an opportunity to a couple of other budding cricketers in Singapore as well. The Indian Cricket Team for the Physically Challenged, in their effort to raise their profile, visited Singapore and we were able to field to side to support them albeit the short notice. Each player in the opposition had some form of physical disability but none of them were less in their commitment in the field. SCC batted first and was able to string together a total of 146 (20 overs) a clear indication that the bowling attack was effective. Most of us were surprised by the discipline in pre-match warmups, fielding drills and team spirit on display. The commitment of our opposition was par excellence. The opening bowler bowled with lightning pace off a short run, fielders threw themselves in the field and chased down boundaries till the last second and their top order bat Balraj scored a well-constructed 50 and got their team close to a winning position. Yes, SCC won the game by a mere 12 runs but for all that were present on the day it wasn’t just another game of cricket as the visiting team showed how the love for the game surpasses physical restrictions and mental barriers – a true display of grit and sheer belief. It was a matter of immense pride for us to host these champions and as the organisation’s founder, Mr Haroon Rashid, said at the end of the match, “SCC accepted the match without knowing much about us and we leave having forged a friendship and memories that will last a lifetime.”

Fresh from the exploits of the previous night, we began the final day with our last group game against Royal Selangor Club (RSC), knowing that a win would send us into the Cup knockout. However, in another highly competitive match-up with our old friends RSC we fell two runs short and had to settle for a place in the Plate semi-finals. Post the narrow misses SCC responded in an emphatic manner, delivering a top bowling performance and our openers Aritra Dutta and Wilfred Diepeveen putting us in good stead ahead of the Plate Final against our hosts PSC. Batting first, SCC made 52 led by Wilfred’s 30*, our highest individual score of the tournament. PSC started well only to be bamboozled by some quality leg spin of JSM Paul Immanuel. This was backed by a solid final over under pressure from Harry Stones, which ensured that the Plate Trophy would find its way on to SQ5307 and back to the SCC’s trophy cabinet! Kudos to Tour Manager Vijay Jeyaratnam and Captain Aritra Dutta for making the tour a memorable experience on and off the field.
SOUND BITES FROM THE OFF SEASON With the cricket season slowly coming to a close, SCC travelled to the Pearl of the Orient to take part in the Penang Sports Club International 6s. We sent a young squad, inclusive of two JSMs, hoping to go deep in the tournament. Our gracious hosts Penang Sports Club hosted 16 teams in the 6s format on 3 & 4 September. The first day consisted of two games, one of which SCC won by a huge margin and the other a tight loss. Post cricket, PSC hosted a dinner later in the evening which included the unwavering

13 August saw the various sports sections ready for battle in the Annual Bullseye Tournament organised by the Darts Section. The opening ceremony, in memory of the late Len Foster (former President of the Club) started the proceedings and we would like to convey our thanks to Joyce Foster for once again supporting the event. In the absence of our Convenor and Captain, Sally, our very able Secretary welcomed everyone and the games commenced. Three groups of three or four teams played in a round robin format. The groups were: Group A Group B Group C Soccer Cricket 1 Bowls Balut Netball Cricket 2 Squash GC 2 Bridge GC 1 Tennis Rugby (unable to attend) The teams played the ‘best of three’. Games were keenly contested with sections demonstrating a healthy combination of competitive play and sportsmanship – exactly what the SCC is all about!

Finally, thank you to the F&B team at The Oval who helped to make the day run so well with a steady flow of drinks and snacks. We look forward to the continued support of all sports sections and welcome members to join us on our section nights.

SCC Annual Golf Tournament
GOLF NEWS The SCC Annual Golf Tournament 2016 was held on 9 September at Seletar Golf Club with a very good response of close to 130 golfers and guests. The weather was again an uncontrollable problem and disrupted the game, but some patient die-hard golfers waited for the course to reopen and managed to finish their game. However, the actual competition was called-off due to the weather. Those who returned to the Club for dinner at the Padang were treated to a fabulous meal and entertainment. Thanks to Vincent Ho, Organising Chairman of the tournament. We wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to our sponsors – Borneo Motors, Silk Express, Cortina Watch, Chronograph.com, Hakko, Gayatri Restaurant, Coca Restaurant, Brazil Churrasco, MST Golf, Old Chang Kee, Physio Active and The Cocoa Trees for their generous contributions and support to the success of the event. The Annual Pot Games versus The Tanglin Club for the Presidents Challenge Trophy was played on 28 September at SICC Sime Course. This year’s game was hosted by TC and 20 Golf Section members took part. The results were 7½ to 2½ in favour of TC. As with all golfing outings, the 19th hole and dinner at the Bukit Room were the better and more enjoyable part of the game. Daud White (TC convenor) personally invited all SCC players to the Pot Game Dinner at Tanglin Club on 1 October.

After various postponements, the Interport with RSC is scheduled to be played on 10 November at Glenmarie Golf Course in KL with a target of at least 24 golfers participating. At the point of writing, the section AGM is scheduled to be held on 14 October. A well-taken equaliser then capped a period of Police dominance, during which SCC had goalkeeper Alex to thank for not conceding more. Sadly, it looked like a draw and SCC would have to begrudgingly regroup for the Bronze Medal match. But wait, who was that a foot out from the goal, tapping in his third of the game, yes you guessed it, Caleb, to secure the most valuable of wins. 3-2, Caleb a hat-trick of goals, Alex a hat-trick of one-on-one saves, and the team a hat-trick of comebacks. Indeed, more hattricks than the newly appointed ‘Professor of Hat Tricks’ at Oxford University and a table topping seven points out of nine.

SCC AT THE SINGAPORE NATIONAL GAMES The section was honoured to be invited to enter a Masters team (over 40s), in the Singapore National Games. The competition also celebrated the re-opening of the artificial pitch at Delta Sports Complex. The team selected included three debutantes and for once, was one of the younger of the teams on display. With the games lasting 15-mins, this youthfulness, balanced with several older hands, meant expectations were high(er than usual). In an Olympic year it was fitting that four group games would decide whether the SCC team had a shot at the Gold Medal match, the Bronze Medal match, or simply a short walk to the nearest coffee shop. First up was Vijayanti and with several ex-Internationals and former SRC players in their line-up, a tough opener. With both teams reluctant to risk too much so early in the competition, nearly two-thirds of the match passed with no real attacks. Luckily a fortuitous goal by the opponents in the final third served to kick-start the SCC effort. Chances suddenly came with a plenty and a clinical hard strike by captain Dirk-Jan Rijks tied the score. The draw satisfied both teams. The second game was against Balestier Lions, a team boasting none other than SCC Coach Kanan at their heart. A slow start by SCC saw Kanan demonstrating he can still play as well as he can teach by scoring from a free-flowing move by the opposition. Conceding the first goal once again brought the best out of SCC, with forward Ben Bowden scoring after a clever one-two with Dirk. This was quickly followed by defender Chris Jones venting his anger with a goal from distance, having been clinically tripped without penalty only 30 seconds before. A 2-1 win. Other results meant that game three of the group stage had become an effective decider as to who would most likely be in the Gold Medal match. An SCC win was essential. Deliberately starting with a more defensive mindset than either of the prior games, SCC looked to counter attack against a powerful Police team that had already scored nine goals in their first two games. Despite conceding the first goal for the third time in succession the team kept to the strategy, a decision rewarded when forward Caleb Woo scored his first goal of the tournament. His second goal, only a minute later, was a more typical ‘one foot from the goal’ tap in, but was no less than what the team and its tactics deserved. 50

The final group game was against a dream team by name alone, with Dreams Hockey having taken a more nightmarish zero points from three games. A tactical decision to play a full press against them was soon justified, as midfielder Pieter van Calcar scored the first goal for SCC, before putting his body on the line in sliding in a second for himself and the team within just a minute. With a Gold medal match place secured, the team then did its utmost to use up all the bad misses that might have proven costly in a closer match. Fortunately, defender Jeyaputra and then Dirk, came back onto the pitch and showed the forwards that the goal did in fact exist. A consolation goal for the opponents with the last hit of the game did little more than wake up Alex in the goal. 4-1. Table-toppers. Gold dreamers! And so to the Gold Medal match against undefeated Vijayanti. Roared on by the passionate crowd of SCC fans whose numbers had doubled since the first game (now two), it was the opposition who settled first. Conceding the first goal once again brought out the best from SCC, quickly fighting back and earning a penalty through Ben. Clinically dispatched by Pieter the game was on a knife edge. A passing move by Vijayanti saw the ball bundled home from close range with claims of the use of a foot, or even both feet, waived away by the umpires. An aggrieved SCC pushed for the equalizer, but with time starting to run out and shots from distance not finding their target, the team was caught on the break and the Silver Medal was the end reward for the admirable efforts on the day. Thanks to Sport Singapore for organising such an enjoyable event. Congrats to all players involved and here’s to going one step further next time! In the Men’s Open of the Singapore National Games, our boys also finished with silver and in the Ladies’ Open we took the bronze.

We have had a fantastic season during the first half of the year and are once again, ready to rock the courts after a good six weeks’ break! HONG KONG TOUR SCC sent a team of nine on a smashing Hong Kong tour in September and had a friendly against the Hong Kong Football Club. There were undoubtedly some outstanding performances on court by most of our players. Their perseverance and teamwork saw them through an incredible 6-point lead, eventually securing the champions title with a final score of 3124. Well done to our team of ladies for putting up a great fight against our opponents! END OF SEASON PARTY Our End of Season Party which happened at the end of September was filled with lots of fun and laughter. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT As always, our section is continuously on the lookout to recruit new members. However, we also see the importance of promoting talents from young. By nurturing and retaining these youths, it will definitely help create a strong pool of JSMs for our section and support our pipeline into the senior squad in future. Hence, we have decided to kick start a youth development programme with the help of a dedicated coach, who has just been signed on and this programme is scheduled to take place by the end of November. Moving on towards the next few months, we have a few upcoming events marked in the netball calendar – the JSM carnival organised by our very own section will be held on the 19 November. The responses have been overwhelming thus far, as we have managed to garner participations from various teams across the under 15s and 17s categories. Also not forgetting, we will be holding a Netball Inter-section tournament on that very day as well. Interested parties, simply form up a team of nine from your section and drop us an email with your name list. So wait no further, hurry on and sign up now! Likewise, we are regularly on the lookout for new members aged 13 and above. We have a team for all and welcome anyone who is keen to join us for some netball fun. SCC Colts at the Community Shield
SCC COLTS The SCC Colts team kicked off the Community League with a win against Saints. With less than a month to prepare, all Singaporeans, permanent residents and international school students in our section were ‘mobilized’. The Colts, led by Nick ‘Sir’ Bromley, got off to a good start, with strong surging runs by the forward pack. Domination by the forwards including a pick and go by Gabriel ‘In his hands’ Lee in the first 10-mins led to a great try which was well converted by Yan ‘Carter’, who added another penalty after to give SCC a 10-0 lead. However, a series of missed tackles and elementary mistakes allowed Saints back into the game as SCC conceded two tries and a penalty. With the score at 13-10 to Saints and less than a minute left on the ref’s Casio, SCC were awarded a timely penalty, where the forwards took up a several solid phases before swinging it out to the backs to set up a ‘je ne sais quoi’ moment for Xavier or Xa’zu who side stepped past three defenders to score a try under the posts. Final score 17-13 to the Colts. Plenty of tough games ahead for the Colts. Watch this space! TOUR TO HONG KONG SEPTEMBER 2016 A small and committed squad of SCC’s finest headed off to HK in early September for the annual SCC versus HKFC Bali memorial rugby weekend. This is one of the most important fixtures for both clubs and is played on a home and away basis each year. This year it was HKFC’s turn to host the SCC. HKFC dominated on the pitch and were fantastic hosts off the field. The game and entire weekend really does encompass the spirit and celebration of the players lost by both clubs in the horrific Bali bombings of 2005. As like all great tour weekends, there are memories and stories that will stay in HK. We searched hard but were unable to find any photographic evidence from the tour. HOSTING HKCC Hong Kong Cricket Club sent over a large squad of young, hard and experienced players for a Singapore tour in mid-September. Two sides from the SCC rolled out onto the Dempsey jungle, which marked the first home warm up games for the 2016/2017 season. 52

HKCC, although looking a little worse for wear from ‘jetlag’, dominated the opening quarter of the Prems’ game, splitting the SCC defence twice to score. However, by the second and third quarter SCC had managed to hold onto the pill for some good periods and crossed for two tries of their own to make a game of it. Sam ‘Tuna’ Blackwood, back from a stint playing rugby league in PNG, was the beneficiary of a strong forward maul from a lineout to score and Valu Ratiribi, inspired by Fiji’s inaugural Olympic gold beat multiple defenders to cross the chalk out wide. HKCC came back to show their class and dominate the final quarter with three late tries. Final score in the Prems match; 29 - 10 to the tourists. It was hotter than hot when the Growlers took to the field to play the gents from HK. Despite the obvious hydration training the HK boys had diligently undertaken the night before both sides were glad of the generous referee who called for multiple drinks stops during the game. There were a number of new players who had their first run with the Growlers that day, including a few of Bryan Lim’s colts who held their own against some experienced players (both on and off the pitch). An impressive mention of Andy Oddie as he played one half for HKCC and then the other half for SCC. A great effort on top of his role as tour guide to HKCC the night before. A very enjoyable game and the SCC were victorious 26-5. Grrr! Big thanks extended to all those who made both fixtures happen. It was a pleasure to host HKCC and moving forward this will hopefully become an annual encounter in the SCC and HKCC rugby calendar.

PRE-PHUKET PADS, GROWING IN CONFIDENCE The Padangtiques continued their phenomenal start to the season with an impressive recent run of six wins and one loss. With 28 goals scored (more than September’s total in 2014 and 2015) and only 12 conceded by a defence always well organised by Gordon Deas. Over the entire season so far, the Pads have only been beaten five times in 30 matches. This puts the side, captained Glyn Vince and managed by Dan Shepherd, in a strong position to face Penang SC in October and ‘El Classico’ against HKFC in Phuket, for the Henrik Lorenz Trophy. This year is the 10th celebration in Phuket and will be a major tour for the Pads. There is confidence in the squad that the side will bring the cup home this year after succumbing to a late, late goal in last year’s 1-1 draw. The Tigers started this period with 5-1 win over Aioli United before whipping Racing FC 6-3 at the Padang. There was also plenty of excitement against St David’s of Wales as a quick lead for SCC was pulled back to 1-1 with about 15

minutes left. But the Tigers scored two minutes before time to snatch the win. A 6-1 win over Matador FC boosted goal difference sufficiently to secure second place in the league.

SQUASH AGM, 12 AUGUST The section appointed a new Treasurer – Ben Chandler who replaces Ashley Nicholas, Genevieve Gay replaces Rahul Khare as a co-opted member and we have our first ever JSM rep – Bryden Yong. Ashley and Rahul stepped down due to increased work commitments.

The section finances remained much the same and we had seen a reduction in section membership over the year and it was mentioned that we are finding it harder to recruit new sports members. We need new sports members as the same handful of existing players are not getting any younger. The main item of business was to vote on increasing our monthly section fees from $5 to $7. We have not increased the fees since 2006 and it was felt now was the time to increase, especially since we may have to start paying a greater share of our sports expenses in the future. This change was passed. After the AGM, we held our End of League Dinner and for that we had almost a full house of 80 people. Mahes and the F&B staff did a fantastic job as usual and we were treated to a 3-course meal of smoked salmon, fish or steak and dessert. Our winning teams in this year’s National Squash league were on hand to collect their medals and prizes – Men’s B grade, Men’s C grade and Ladies Division 1. For the other teams, let’s do better next year! TOUR TO KUALA LUMPUR FOR INTERPORT WITH RSC On 19-21 August, 11 players headed up to KL to do battle for the Chiam Tow San trophy. The Interport with RSC is traditionally one of our most important and prestigious one with both clubs having access to current and former national players.

Because of our small team in numbers and strength, RSC played a second string team in order to spare our blushes. Unfortunately a third string team would have been a better choice as we were soundly thumped 7-0. The weekend did not start well with our departure being delayed and then only getting worse being stuck at Tuas for four hours, finally entering Malaysia at midnight. Arriving at our hotel at 2am, it was a very quick check in with everyone virtually sprinting to their rooms to get some sleep. It was great to see the familiar faces from RSC – Francis Gan, Mike Soo (the older), and Mary Lee. On the third court were those players not needed for the match, playing their new favourite game Racquetball – Dennis Tan, Edward Teoh. They encouraged us to take up Racquetball at SCC and I must admit I was impressed with the game and had a go. The matches were quite one-sided with everyone losing 3-0, except Jun Yuan who took a set off Andrew Lee. Genevieve and Rachel had tough matches, with Genevieve playing Andrea Lee one of Malaysia’s top juniors who had just returned from playing in the World Junior Champs in Poland. Wilfred played a guy who seemed unable to stop hitting the nick for three sets, while Ben played Ian Gan, son of Francis, all 13 years of him. The dinner was attended by their Chairman of Sports and by Singapore’s roving squash ambassador Jit Uei. It was a good tour, RSC were generous hosts and we all had a good time.

FRIDAY NIGHT FRIENDLY WITH KEPPEL CLUB On 9 September, a friendly game between Keppel Club and SCC was organized and it was a great way to spend the Friday evening at the Club! Players had the opportunity to play several rounds of tennis and pit their skills against different players. Tennis, fellowship, the lovely views and food – what more can you ask for! In the welcome speech, Gilbert Ng, who organised the social tennis also thanked Keppel Club again for kindly making their courts available to us back in 2006 when alternative courts were needed during the Club’s renovation. STA INTERCLUB DOUBLES - LADIES WIN TITLE This year’s Interclub Doubles took place from 10 September and SCC’s Ladies A and Men’s A, B and C took part in the competition. So far, the haze has been kept at bay! We fondly remember last year’s very hazy weather where we not only had to monitor if it was not raining, but if the haze levels were at a suitable level for play! This year, the heat replaced the haze and all who played, certainly walked off the courts a few shades tanner or redder. The SCC Men’s A were semi-finalists, while the SCC Ladies’ A, after four very close and hard fought ties earned the welldeserved title of champions in their category! This piece of gold-ware adds to their singles title in March this year and runners-up title in July’s doubles tournament. Congratulations to all who played!

CLARE CHENG QUALIFIES FOR FUTURE STARS One of our juniors, Clare Cheng, has qualified for the WTA Future Stars tournament held in the lead up to the WTA Finals in Singapore. This tournament brings together top players in the U14 and U16 category from 18 markets in the Asia-Pacific region. In the qualifying competition in Singapore, Clare beat five other players to emerge top of the table. The tournament took place from 19-23 October at Kallang Tennis Centre with the finals at the Indoor Stadium. Go Clare!
