PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

On 5 December, the Club held a Special General Meeting (SGM) to vote on two resolutions pertaining to Member subscriptions. The importance of the issue warranted the holding of a special meeting. On behalf of the General Committee (GC), I thank all Members for taking your roles as stakeholders of the Club seriously by participating in the important decision-making process and taking the time to voice your opinions.

This year is particularly special for SCC – it was 170 years ago, in October 1852, that the Singapore Cricket Club was established. To commemorate the occasion, a whole host of social and sports events was organised over a week in mid-November, fuelled by specially curated menus. The Clubhouse was extra busy that week and it was great to see Members gathering and interacting with one another and building new and stronger friendships through all the activities. The week of celebrations culminated in a Club Party attended by 300 members and guests toasting to many more exciting years for SCC!

A major event that returned to SCC Padang after three years was the SCC International Rugby Sevens Tournament (SCC7s) from 12 – 13 November 2022. The second oldest 7s tournament in the world, this 73rd edition saw international teams descend upon our green field and compete for the Ablitt Cup while cheered on by around 4,000 Members and public spectators over the weekend. On behalf of the General Committee and Club members, our thanks and congratulations to the SCC7s tournament

organising committee for another successful chapter to this fantastic event.

As 2022 drew to a close, Christmas was very much in the air at the Clubhouse. Members came to dine and enjoy all the festive dining menus specially curated for them; even for their parties at home, they “brought” SCC with them with their orders of our festive roasts, cakes, pastries and hampers – our outlets were booked up very quickly and takeaway festive orders were rapidly filled too. The many activities organised for Members and their families were also well-received. Certainly, SCC concluded the year with a massive cheerful bang!

The new year promises to be a lively one of joyful anticipation and interesting opportunities to explore new things. I hope you will continue to support the Club, its management and staff as they plan the year’s programs and continue to serve you with the dedicated and warm hospitality SCC is known for. It is the Members who make up a Club, and active Members who enable the longevity of the Club; we look forward to your patronage, welcome your ideas, and active participation in whichever Section and/or Interest Group you are involved with.

Special General Meeting (SGM)

Monday, 5 December 2022

The hybrid Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Singapore Cricket Club was conducted on 5 December 2022, with members being able to attend the meeting in person at the Padang Restaurant or electronically by logging on virtually; voting of the resolutions was done by electronic means.

Chairman/President Zoher S. Motiwalla called the meeting to order at 6.30pm and electronic voting was opened shortly after.

The SGM was concluded at 9.07pm when the Chairman closed the meeting after the results were announced.

NOTICE OF RESOLUTION TENDERED PURSUANT TO RULE 59 OF THE RULES OF THE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

RESOLUTION ONE

To resolve that in accordance with Rules 45(b) and 45(c) there will be a monthly subscription increase for the following categories of members:-

(i) Ordinary Members;

(ii) Term Members;

(iii) Sports Members;

(iv) Ordinary (Transferable) Members; and

(v) Corporate (Transferable) Members (per nominee) and

(vi) Family Members per head

The monthly subscription increase will take effect as follows:

• From 01 January 2023, monthly subscription will be increased from S$103 per month to S$120 per month and family subscription from S$30 per month to S$35 per month.

• From 01 January 2024, monthly subscription will be increased from S$120 per month to S$130 per month and family subscription from S$35 to S$38 per month.

The Resolution is declared carried by majority.

RESOLUTION TWO

THAT the current Rule 45 be and is hereby amended in the manner set out in the annexure hereto titled “Resolution

Two – Proposed Amendments to Rule 45” or in such other manner as this SGM may approve in whole or in parts with or without amendments and the General Committee be empowered to compile the amended Rule as approved by this SGM for submission to the Registrar of Societies for sanction. The amendment is intended to allow subscription fees to be increased at or below the formula rate set out in Rule 45(b) without members’ approval in a General Meeting.

The Resolution is declared NOT carried by majority.

Beneficiaries include the elderly, the disabled, low income families, children from single parent families or otherwise poverty stricken families, and migrant workers in Singapore.

Beach Clean-Up at Changi Beach

On 8 October 2022

It was a beautiful Saturday morning; I had geared myself with some garbage bags and a pair of rubber gloves, and set on the road with my father for the rendezvous at Changi Beach for the SCC Beach Clean-Up activity.

Whilst it takes the whole community or rather all residents of any country to play their part, my goal for the day was to head out there and play a fractional part to society within my capable means by picking up as much litter as possible along the coast.

Every single matter or item you pick up matters, and you will be surprised at the amount of nonbiodegradable matter picked up, from plastic bags to broken Styrofoam boxes, cloths, toys, cans, plastic bottles, and so forth. It is not only the big items, but the small ones that equally matter.

Coastal environments, specifically beaches, hold a special place in our hearts. Gazing over the sea, listening to the sound of breaking waves and feeling the sand between our toes inspire awe, instils calm, releases tension and provides a transitional space for many types of recreation. It still baffles me - why are people killing this beautiful nature? Why are they not picking up after themselves? Why are they lazy to do so and at the same time still complain about litter? These are also the same people who complain about the fish they eat that is not healthy and the water not being clear. Do they realise that it is them (we humans) that have created the mess… sigh!

Every year millions of marine life are mutilated or killed by litter. I was told once (can’t remember by who), that “no other wilderness falls victim to human interference faster than our coastlines.” So whilst it is important that family and friends who want to come together to the beaches to get closer to nature and ease their mind can do so, they should as importantly help make it a cleaner haven. The coastlines are anomalously located between land and sea, nature and culture, and are important to our wellbeing as it provides the opportunity for tactile close up contact with the natural physical world.

By cleaning the beach, we improve the environmental quality, which indirectly also improve our dietary habits (like the fish if eaten that has been unintentionally chemically induced by such litter).

If you do not like cleaning, well then take it as an exercise and stroll along the beach. Even if you leave that regular exercise of yours (walk/ jog/cycle) for that one moment in time and replace it with this, trust me you will feel a sense of accomplishment. Not an accomplishment of bragging about how many kilometres you jogged or cycled, but a higher sense of accomplishment that you are providing for the community, improving the ecological environment, and perhaps maybe even saving lives (be it humans who eat the poisoned fish or the sea life of mother nature itself). No matter what walk of life you come from, please do not just think, but do for your community.

We are lucky to be living on an island surrounded with a coastline. Time to do your part, before the value could be lost due to human enhanced pollution. Keep it clean, keep it safe, pick up after yourselves and trust me, it can only get better. The more we do, the better the benefits are reaped. What could be better than a clean coastline to enjoy nature and release your worries.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

At the Cenotaph, SCC remembered the members of the armed forces who fought and died during WWI, alongside VIPs including UK High Commissioner HE Kara Owen CMG, Australia High Commissioner William Hodgman, Canada High Commissioner Jean-Dominique Ieraci, and New Zealand Acting High Commissioner Peter Kemp. This was followed by a luncheon and presentation by SCC Member Mr. Jeya Ayadurai at the Gilmour Room about the historical background of the Cenotaph.

SAFARI TALES FROM A MAASAI WARRIOR – PRESENTED BY A2A SAFARIS

Monday, 21 November 2022

Members spent an interesting evening with Godfrey Kinyaga, a member of Kenya’s Maasai tribe who shared safari tales in a session by A2A Safaris. Godfrey grew up on the foothills of snow-capped Mount Kenya and is one of the top guides at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a UNESCO World Heritage site. During the interesting session, he shared on conservation and his Maasai culture.

Members had a great time at the Deepavali Celebration which kicked off the evening with our traditional lighting ceremony conducted by SCC Vice-President Mathavan Devadas, Social Subcommittee Chairlady Nanthini Visvalingam, and Social Subcommittee Members Raymond Ambrose, Vivian Rhamanan, and Sally Leonard.

Members had loads of fun with rangoli craft activities for kids, henna art, Bhangra dance performances, and live music by Divine Soul.

SCC RUGBY ACADEMY

PLAY ON AT THE PADANG

After a three-year hiatus, the SCC Rugby Academy 7s and Touch Tournament hit the ground running in November. 2022 was our tenth anniversary and post-pandemic it was great to see some competition again.

Over two weekends, more than 360 games kicked off with 2,500 children taking part. Due to the number of players and age groups, we were again split into two venues - the historic Padang and our spiritual home, SCC Dempsey.

Rain fell as the first whistle blew but the clouds were then kind – a great job by the groundsmen ensured the pitch held up and was looking magnificent for the finals and adult 7s held the next weekend.

From U5s to U18s girls and boys, rugby and touch - our teams put in sterling performances with many reaching their age group finals. Special mention to our girls contact teams - this was the first time we fielded teams in these age groups and categories. Girls contact is a section of the Academy we have been growing in the last few years. The tournament also showcased the progression of past Academy players into the SCC Rugby Section as players and refs.

Our thanks to all our Academy volunteers, without whom our tournament couldn’t run. Special appreciation goes to Janet and Wendy for all their kind help and cooperation, and to Karen Tay and the F&B team who kept us fed and watered.

The SCC Lion also delighted the crowd and made several brave appearances during the medal ceremonies and the heat!

The SCC Academy 7s has become a firm favourite in the junior rugby calendar and 2022 was particularly special as our Club celebrated ten years on the rugby scene.

It is hard to think of a more magnificent setting for a tournament than the iconic Padang – an event bound to be stored in the memory bank of a generation of junior rugby players from Singapore and around the world.

It’s great to be back and we’ll see you next year!

SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB INTERNATIONAL

1098 days, 23 hours, and 5 minutes: That’s the time between the final of the 72nd edition of the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s and the time it was to kick off the final of the 73rd edition. A lot has changed in more than three years, and yet, not very much. Ponsonby District RFC was again in the final, looking to regain the Ablitt Cup that it last won 16 years ago. Old rivals Daveta from Fiji were not participating this year, with long-time visitors Palmyra Rugby Union Club contesting the final this year. Again, lots have changed, but nothing really has.

2022 was the year the 73rd edition of the SCC 7s returned, held a weekend after its traditional spot at the first weekend of November. The tournament kicked off a weekend before with the SCC Academy tournament, which saw over 100 teams over age groups ranging from Under 5s to Under 17s descend on both the Padang and Dempsey fields. The sound of boys and girls playing rugby was sweet and paved the way wonderfully into the other age group tournament of the SCC7s, the Schools and Colleges 7s tournament. Kudos to Brendan Nolan, Claire Ferguson and their team of dedicated volunteers who made the weekend a reality.

School Boy rugby took the greatest hit during the pandemic, with some players entering and leaving school without even playing a representative game for their school. To have them on the Padang on Friday before the main tournament was a sight to be seen, with play going smoothly despite some springling from above. The Semis and Finals of the Len Foster Trophy, The Sitiwalla Cup and the John Clark Trophy were played over the main tournament, and the atmosphere around those games on the weekend was something special. Schools and Colleges Chair Shaneet Rai did a spectacular job within a short timeframe and has to be congratulated on a job well done.

Bright and early on Saturday morning, the 73rd edition of the SCC 7s kicked off proper with the usual smattering of people. That smattering grew to a crowd of over 4,000 throughout the weekend, as many flocked back to the Padang after all this time. 12 Teams ran onto the field throughout the day, from old friends the Ponies, Pally and the Cougars, to the servicemen of the HMAS Adelaide who decided to give 7s a spin for a change. One cannot forget the pure joy and determination of our friends from Japan, Kurumi, who once again entertained us on and off the field. We had teams from across the causeway in the KL Tigers alongside the SCC team and the Singapore Development Team. Tradition Bucks were looking extremely strong coming into the tournament with several international representatives and indeed raised the standard of play across the board.

At 5.30 pm on 13 November, Schoolboy champions had been crowned, Bowl and Plate winners were given their dining ware, and it was time for said final, three years to the day since it was last played. When the final whistle blew, the Ponies had regained the Ablitt Cup after a long time between drinks, and it was a fitting end to not one, but two great weekends of rugby, the return of a tournament that has been so missed. Congratulations must go out to Chairman Raj Sarakran on making the tournament happen and for establishing the foundation for more to come.

SCC CRICKET ACADEMY

ACADEMY OVERVIEW

2022 has been a liberating year. With the easing of restrictions, we saw Cricket return to full swing at both the Padang and Dempsey. Our academy attendees remained relatively consistent throughout the year with an average of 243 participants each term. We are proud to announce that we hit a record number of 55 elite (U16) participants signing up for our final term of the year. Another development for our academy this year was the new collaboration with Scorpiens Cricket Academy which enabled our participants to consistently play matches against high quality oppositions across the U9/U11/U13 age groups. We hope to forge similar partnerships and potentially organise more in-house matches in the coming year.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES

There were several notable performance from current and past academy players in 2022

• Hariharan Ganesh – debutant for Cougars/Tigers, 14 wickets @ 16.5

• Pranav Dhanuka – debutant for Cougars, 23 wickets @ 13.7, the third highest wicket taker in the league!

• Vihaan Maheswari - Awarded JSM Player of the year, Made Lions Debut (Premier), U-19 National Player (Scored a match Winning hundred in the Final of the ICC CWC Qualifiers Asia Div-2 Championship)

• Aaryan Menon - Made Lions Debut (Premier), U-19 National Player

• Abhuday Chhajer - Made his debut for Cougars/Tigers (Div 1), U-19 National Player

• Rahil Khan - U-19 National Player

LAUNCH OF PEAK PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME

The Academy also launched the Peak Performance Programme (PPP) in partnership with the Cricket Section. The aim is to nurture youth talent and transition to the Section’s senior sides. PPP members become JSMs, so they can access as much cricket training and matches as possible.

The squad consists of boys aged 13 to 18 and incorporates participants from both the academy and those who have already graduated into the Section’s senior sides. 22 boys were selected for the initial PPP launch. Sadly due to covid restrictions, the squad only played one game this year. This was a thrilling declaration game against the Sat XI on the Padang, finishing in a draw with some great individual performances and teamwork shown.

Finally, a big shoutout to both the Section and the academy for being so supportive of the PPP being launched and all those who helped behind the scenes to make it a success. We look forward to 2023 and striving for more success with the squad on and off the pitch.

SCC NETBALL ACADEMY

The SCC Netball Academy is a brand-new program aimed at kids aged 4-16 years old. The program has been set up to develop budding players, new and experienced. The academy is also the only netball academy in Singapore that accepts players of any gender.

In December 2022, we completed the inaugural term of the SCC Netball Academy. In 2023, we look to broaden our squads, introduce a younger age group (subject to registrations), participate in friendly tournaments and carnivals to increase exposure to our players and potentially even participate in overseas tours.

In addition, we will be looking to host specialist clinics with special guests and run various workshops to improve the skills of our academy players and teams.

The dates for Term 1 of 2023 have been finalised; please refer to the image on the right.

As the newest netball academy in Singapore and the newest academy of the SCC, we look forward to growing to our team and our sport, not just within the Club but also in Singapore. We also look forward to raising our profile by becoming a formidable team in competitions, feeding into our junior and senior squads within the Section.

A MONTH OF WINS

It was Win! Win! Win! all the way for SCC as our Balut players took honours at two important tournaments.

First up, the 2022 Interclub Tournament ended with a bang for us at both the fifth round hosted by us and the final round hosted by Khalsa.

As last reported, Khalsa Team 1 had a commanding lead after the fourth round but we managed to turn things around by taking the fifth round with a win by our Team 1 with 2,445 points and Khalsa 1 fell behind with 2,327 points. The runner up after Round 4 NUSS Team 2 also did badly with 2,257 points.

At this stage SCC Team 1 looked to be galloping away with the trophy but at the last round at Khalsa, Tanglin Club Team 2 suddenly sprang a surprise by winning that round with 2,496 points.

However our Team 1 came in second place with 2,479 points and that was enough for them to clinch the championship!

Well done to Team 1 comprising of Vashi, Yasmin, Rosemary and Soma.

Next up, the Interport at Bangkok was finaly held after a hiatus of three years due to Covid. There were a total of 84 players representing eight clubs from Sabah, Sarawak, Thailand and Singapore.

SCC had a very successful Interport 2022 with the following wins:

• Champions SCC Team 2 with Rajkumar, Mano, Huned and Anwar totally bagging 3,285 points over eight rounds

• Highest individual overall score winner Rajkumar with a very impressive 961 points

• Highest individual single score winner Soma with 154 points

• Highest overall pair scores winners Huned and Anwar with 1,662 points

Congratulations to all winners for the very impressive wins. As winners, SCC has hosting rights for the 2023 Interport and the committee will explore various options available to make it financially comfortable for overseas clubs to participate. It was great to meet up with friends from all clubs and although

there were still many clubs who did not participate in Bangkok, it did not deter the rest from having a wonderful time there.

MONTHLY SECTION GAMES

November was an afternoon game held on Saturday, the 5th, with 40 players which included long-not-seen members Rick Clements, Deepti Virmani and Cathy Yeomans with a few guests.

Results for November::

• Champions: Fahmida Hassanbhai tied with Tony Fisher both with 658 points

• Runner Up: Anwar Gaffoor with 648 points

• Lowest score: Renee Balagopal with 442 points

SCC 170TH ANNIVERSARY

Balut Section’s contribution for the Club’s 170th Anniversary celebrations was to organize an Intersection Game on 19 November which had a gathering of 24 players from eight Sections including GC and our very own Section. Everyone had fun playing the five rounds organized and it was great to see other Section members learning how to play Balut quickly and having so much fun at it that we eventually had two persons who immediately signed up to be Section Members.

Results:

• Top scorer: Michael Milford from Bridge Section with 567 points

• Second place: Srikanth Kakulapati from GC with 554 points

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Held on Tuesday, 13 December, this event usually marks the end of our calendar for the year and this year, we decided to end with a big festive gala at The Padang Restaurant.

With more than 40 members and guests, everyone had a good time relaxing and reminiscing over past events and what to look forward to in the future.

It was a fun-filled party with games which many sportingly took part in and some of the efforts were hilarious as the photos will show.

A great night to mark the end of our calendar year.

DOUBLE NATIONAL FOURS GOLD FOR SCC

Bowls Singapore National Fours were held at SCC from 12 - 27 November at SCC. Congratulations to SCC for clinching double National Fours Gold at home ground for both Men’s and Ladies category that concluded on 27 November 2022. Both games were spectacular yet nerve-wrecking and gutwrenching.

The ladies were all tied at 8 to 8 after nine ends and fought to raise the stacks to 16 against 9 with only one end to go. The ladies all contributed and played well as a team with young Sarah and Hwee Khoon winning gold in their first national championship!

The men were exceptional in coming from 2-13 down to win the final match, by winning each n every of the remaining seven ends! Yes, consider these details for the men’s fours: it seemed the SCC men were doomed to lose miserably with a score of 2/13 in the first half. Spectators witnessed the great awakening when by the second last end they caught up to 13 all. The last end left us breathless. When Srini delivered his first bowl, we were one up but Mus did a perfect draw on his back hand to score 2 up for Lion city. Did this spell the end for SCC? We all held our breath when

Srini delivered his last bowl, achieving the super shot of the day. His bowl smugly sat on the opposition bowl to secure the victory for SCC!

Great teamwork good sportsmanship and top-notch etiquette were also the hallmark of the SCC teams who were the confirmed winners in all aspects.

2022 GILES ROCHE INTERSECTION

The Giles Roche lawn bowls competition was held on 26 November 2022. It was well-attended by all sections with some like Mahjong 1 and 2, sending two groups of threes to compete in the two bowls friendly annual.

Cricket emerged as the overall champion with three wins out of the three games. Thanks to our Captain Mrs Mary Lim, Mr TQ Lim, all the volunteers and participants for making this the happiest tournament of the year for lawn bowls!

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH WONG HUI KAI - SCC MEN’S SINGLES RUNNER-UP

Who introduced you to bowls and why do you enjoy the game?

I discovered Bowls through fellow SCC member, Hui Shan, as she was my classmate back in Catholic Junior College and Mrs Mary Lim mentored the whole lot of us. I guess you say it was love at first Bowl...

How did you persevere through the rounds of the tournament?

Well, after taking a two-year break from bowls, I was on a “return with vengeance” mindset.

What were the most memorable moments?

Definitely the finals. I felt very happy and impressed by Bryan’s performance, he was on Do-no-wrong mode and there was nothing that I could do about it..

What do you enjoy most about bowls?

That it is for all walks of life. I intend to play this sport for as long as I can hold a bowl.

Your philosophy for bowling?

Your next bowl should always be better than your last shot.

Any advice for new bowlers?

I think it depends on what these newcomers want out of bowls. If it’s a competitive practice session that they’re looking for, just give me a shout and I’m sure we can arrange something. I am happy to help mentor those who are keen to bowl.

SCC Lions having been crowned national champions of Singapore in 2022, the Cricket Section’s AGM and Awards Night was always going to be a spectacular event. The Club delivered with aplomb and our thanks go to all the SCC staff for such wonderful hospitality. It was a fine opportunity to celebrate a triumphant year for the Section. At the AGM earlier in the evening, the Convenor congratulated the collective effort and achievement of the Section in what has been gratifying return to Cricket in 2022. The treasurer presented the Section’s accounts, which are in good health. This is important given the prospect of bring deprived of the Padang for much of 2023 due to the combined requirements of NDP and F1. Nevertheless, there are encouraging discussions regarding the redevelopment of Demspey, which we hope will enhance facilities for the Section later in the 2023.

DARTS BULLS-EYE TOURNAMENT

We had our Darts Section monthly Bulls Eye tournament on 20 October and 17 November - both events were well attended, with the final session in November. Our Bulls-Eye Champion for the year is Tushar Doshi with a grand total of 36 points! He will walk away with our inaugural Section Trophy. Our Convenor Sadiq Zoeb came in as runner-up with 30 points after a close fight at our last game in November.

DARTS EVENT FOR SCC 170TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

The Section took part in the Club’s 170th Anniversary Celebrations by hosting a fun walk-in event for Section and non-Section Members at the Oval. We hosted a total of 19 Club Members, including our Club President Mr Zoher Motiwalla, who turned out to be quite the darter! Prizes were given out for novelty scores, with everyone having a fun Saturday afternoon at the Club.

Football

Having resumed this year following the pandemic-enforced twoseason hiatus, the Singapore Football League (“SFL”, formerly known as National Football League) title race went down to the final day of the season.

Our SFL boys completed a successful campaign, finishing second in the league and secured promotion back to SFL Division 1 for the 2023 season.

SCC posted a highly decorated scorecard this season which is a culmination of hard work, dedication, and professionalism over the years by all coaches and players involved.

Our boys finished the season with the best defence after conceding the least number of goals and picked up several awards at the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Awards Night 2022. These awards include:

1. FAS Recognition Award for the club’s contribution to Singapore’s pillars of football

2. Fair Play award

3. Top Goal Scorer award. The golden boot was awarded to Club Captain Chang Guo Guang (“Guang”) who plundered in 20 goals in his most productive season yet for our men in yellow and black.

Both Head Coach Amos Boon and Club Captain Guang were also nominated for the Coach of the Year and the Player of the Year awards during the FAS Awards Night 2022.

The team would like to take this opportunity to thank our coaches (Amos Boon, Kian Ann and Kim Leng) for their strong leadership and unwavering commitment to the team leading to this successful campaign.

The boys have already started their preparations for next season and are looking forward to your support for 2023!

The Section played at Warren Golf & Country Club on 15 November, doing well until we got rained out toward the end and gathered for some nice local food as well as a beverage or two.

On 15 December we played at Singapore Island Country Club with some friends from the British Club, where the weather held up much better, and dined there afterward as well. Some scores were submitted for consideration to represent the Club in the Interport game, POT Game 2023 and our Inter-club games.

The Section’s Christmas Party took place on 16 December, and a good time was had by all with The Padang Restaurant’s excellent buffet. Those present danced to the music of The Rangers band and enjoyed the company of good friends. Best-dressed prizes went to Anthony Selley and Kuldip Kaur.

Golf Section Members will be able to book The Green Room to use the golf simulator on their own or in a group for a small fee. Snacks and beverages are allowed in the room, so you can make a real event of it. We held a sneak preview with a Nearest-thePin contest during the Club’s 170th anniversary celebration week on 26 November, with Jasbir Kaur taking the top spot in the women’s contest and Paul Brenchley on top on the men’s side.

We have a packed agenda for 2023 – so if you’ve been considering joining the Golf Section or not come in a while, this might be the year to get going! Check out our planned schedule – we’re even looking at a few overseas tours. For the friendly games, we take players at all skill levels, so do come join us if you’re interested. CELEBRATIONS CAP ANOTHER SOLID YEAR FOR HOCKEY SECTION

The Hockey Section closed its year with festivities galore. On Saturday, 19 November, the Section held its AGM and Annual Awards and Dinner Night, known as the Golden Balls since 2011. The day was filled with activities starting from the 7-a-side Members’ Cup tournament featuring four teams made of players with the same last digit of their membership numbers. The idea mooted by our current convenor Intekhab Khan has grown in stature and the tournament has attracted more players each year.

Team One (also known as Oriental Ones) retained the Members’ Cup after their wins in 2018 and 2019. It is noteworthy that they were the only team to feature a squad made up entirely of their own team members. The three other teams were made up of players from two or three different numbers.

Keeping with the World Cup season, the teams were named Selecao, Les Bleus, Three Lions and Albicelestes. Team 1 were rightly tagged as Selecao and they dazzled their way to the title. However Albicelestes, who finished last in the Members’ Cup in real life, won the real-World Cup on 18 December; good thing our Members’ Cup form did not derail their campaign.

Following the Members’ Cup, the Section AGM was held, and a new committee was put in place. As already mentioned, Intekhab Khan is now the convenor with Joshua Chan the Secretary and Wayne Blazejczyk the new Men’s Captain. Janice Tan, Abigail Rhodes, Jeremiah Thong and Bala Chandran continue in their roles as Ladies Captain, Social Secretary, JSM Rep and Committee Member in the new term respectively. Julian Michael and Subhas Nathan will continue but in their new roles as Social Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Atul Sinha, Jocelyn Teh and Sally Aldridge are new Committee Members.

Great things are expected of the committee as the Section strives to add more stars to their playing shirts. The new kit will arrive early next year in time for the start of the National League season. On the topic of winning, the AGM was followed by an entertaining evening of fun and laughter with the Golden Balls. There were 14 deserved winners.

The Men’s 3s Players of the Year was Dave Ahier. The Australian’s industry, commitment, initiatives and on-field performance bagged him the award. Shenanigans around the wrong name being on the award is still being dealt with a light-hearted touch and many trips to the trophy makers.

The Ladies’ 2s Player of the Year was Jocelyn Teh. The defender who relocated from Hong Kong has settled well and played her heart out to help the Ladies’ 2 s build a solid foundation for future glory.

The Men’s 2s Player of the Year was Dominic Chan. The utility player truly dug deep and delivered telling performances week in and week out in a very tough league.

The Ladies’ 1s and Men’s 1s Players of the Year were both Goalkeepers. Sally Aldridge and Gugan Sandran took the awards after many match-saving and points-earning performances in the National League.

We then proceeded to award four Most Valuable Player awards. For the Girls it was Hannah Niebuhr - the 13-year-old starlet is destined for bigger and better things and the Section is excited to see her contribute to its growth. 20-year-old Kishon Sagayaraja took the Boys equivalent following his dedicated attendance at training, league and Lliga matches. His passionate performances also made a difference in the decision.

The Ladies’ MVP was the 1s captain Rachel Flynn. The Irishwomen

who leads her organisation in her day job is also a mother of three boys and has managed to juggle her hockey as well. From training and playing games, Rachel closed the 2022 season on the pitch on the form she brought when she first donned the famous Black and Gold kit in 2012. What a player! Not boasting a decade of service, Maximillian Rolf was awarded the Men’s MVP for his sheer love of playing hockey and recently revealed love of playing hockey for the SCC; an extremely talented man who missed the very short 1s season by first being afflicted with COVID, then dengue, and finally the recovery to fitness from both.

The trio of Abigail, Joshua and Julian won the Initiative of the Year award for organising the Section Quiz Night during the Circuit Breaker days. The Section wanted to recognise the efforts of Members during the years we have not held the Awards nights and the Quiz Night stood out as it brought digitally together 52 participants, and a royally good time was had.

For the Sporting Feat of the Year, the Launch of The Hockey SCChool took the honours. Subhas and Kanan received the Golden Ball representing all the others who helped get the SCChool up and running.

The Ladies 1s won yet another Team of the Year award following their two Golds and one Silver medal haul, the best record in the Section.

Bala Chandran was recognised for his dedicated service to the Section and the sport of Hockey by being award a Lifetime Achievement Award. Equally prestigious, Dr Kong Chee Seng was honoured as the Section Member of the Year for his exploits both on and off the pitch. The no-nonsense defender was instrumental in saving the life of a fellow Section Member who had collapsed during training.

The evening then was energised by the music of legendary Singaporean band Energy and a cool DJ. Dancing followed and many fine wines and spirits flowed. That took us to the season closing tour of Bangkok during the weekend of 2 to 4 December. The heavy and continuous rains meant the usually decent Royal Bangkok Sports Club pitch became a very large mud patch. Despite this extreme challenge, the Ladies once again made the Semi-Final cut but were undone by a goal in the first minute of the Semi-finals and then on penalty strokes for the bronze. The Men however settled well in the mud and found their footing only to the undone by the Royal Thai Air Force, albeit narrowly in the Quarters. But they took their place in the Plate competition seriously, as they did their beer consumption and won the Plate against the hosts RBSC. It is noteworthy that they won both their Semis and Finals with last-minute PC goals.

That brings us to the end of update at the Hockey Section. We won nine titles in the end, and eight more medals too. A total 17-medal haul season is a good one but something the discerning will know we need to improve upon. Let’s all make 2023 a better year. The Hockey Section wishes everyone a very Happy New Year!

Rugby

After a hiatus of almost three years, the SCC has welcomed Rugby back to the Padang; first with the SCC 7s in the first half of November and thereafter with the return of the regular season to the (now officially) hallowed ground.

SCC 7S

With a combination of juniors and opens games, the 73rd iteration of the tournament ran from 11 - 13 November, with the Rugby Section proudly hosting visiting teams from across Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. In the Cup Final, New Zealand’s Ponsonby were eventual winners (26-14) in a high paced and hard-hitting encounter against Australia’s Palmyra. Whilst the SCC Men’s team claimed second place in the shield, a number of players from the Club represented Singapore’s Development (who won the Shield) as well as the hastily added Barbarians, with the latter going on to win the Bowl. Given the importance placed upon developing our junior players, it was particularly satisfying to see the enthusiasm and skills displayed by the Academy age groups in their section of the competition, with a special mention going to the U18 girls who came runners-up in their first appearance at the 7s. All in all, a fantastic long weekend of rugby for all ages and abilities and an excellent carnival atmosphere for the Club to build on in 2023. Well done to Raj Sankaren and the SCC 7s organising committee.

REGULAR SEASON

It has been a joy and privilege for the SCC Rugby Section to host all our recent fixtures on the Padang. Armed with new club strips, players in all three grades (Lions, Tankards and Prems) have been fighting hard each week for the chance to represent the Club at Singapore’s favourite field and this has in turn been borne out in the Section’s results. Both the Lions and the Prems remain undefeated this season but equally impressive is the Tankards’ performance, with the notionally second grade team taking two 1st team’s scalps already this season.

Of course, no rugby club can perform to this level without a decent social calendar and in addition to the camaraderie and support shown by Club Members on (and along) the sideline at the weekends, Ross Johnstone and the social committee have helped to keep our Saturday nights fun-filled. Whilst there are no photos to share of either the Captain’s Cocktails or Rugby Section Christmas Party, both events have certainly been significant factors in the Section’s recruiting and retention strategy. In short, a fantastic end to 2022 for the Rugby Section with a solid foundation laid for tours, socials, and of course silverware, in 2023.

TRIANGULAR TOUR – 4 -5 NOVEMBER 2022

The 26th edition of the Annual Triangular Tournament was held at The Calcutta Racket Club on 4 and 5 November 2022. This event has a very rich history and we were fortunate to have Kevin Connors, our former convenor and the founder of the Triangular Tournament to come and grace the occasion. We also had our Club President Zoher Motiwalla, a long-time supporter of the Triangular, cheering the team at every point. No Triangular tournament is ever complete without the presence of one and only Peter Rogers who I believe is the only person who has attended all the 26 editions of this tournament. This is no mean feat and I look forward to seeing Peter at the next 26 as well!

Over two days, Team SCC played a total of 14 matches. As we had a few last-minute pull outs, we couldn’t field our strongest possible team and lost all but one match. The silver lining was that the match we won was in the doubles category and buoyed by this success, the committee has decided to start a box league for Doubles, the details of which will be announced soon. As our regular readers know, SCC hosts the Triangular every three years so if Madras Cricket Club is unable to host it in 2023 due to ongoing renovations, the Triangular would be held at SCC sometime towards the end of 2023.

CHALLENGE THE CHAMPS

Singapore hosted the Marigold Squash tournament from 1520 November 2022. The top men and women players came to participate in it and SCC was proud to host the Mens World number 2 Paul Coll and Ladies World number 8 Sarah Jane Perry to come and spend an evening with the Members of SCC. It was a fun-filled evening as Members interacted with Paul and Sarah and participated in a quiz where they challenged the champs not only on the court but off court as well. Both Paul and Sarah had a great time at the Club and we look forward to seeing them again at SCC.

A special thanks to Mr. James Blythman and Ms. Teng Teng Tan for their generous contributions that made this event a success. Also a big thank you to Yann Mocellin and Philip Mckechnie who organised the event and ensured that we all had a great time.

SCC also hosted Mostafa Asal, the World number 4, a few days later. Asal is a phenomenal talent and he spent a few hours at SCC playing with various Members.

SCC SQUASH PARTNERS WITH SPORTCARES

The squash programme for youth-at-risk delivered in partnership with SportCares was a great success. Over the twelve weeks of the programme, the participating girls gained a better appreciation of the sport as well as developing technical skills, movement, hand eye coordination and fitness. Furthermore, courtesy of SportCares, the girls had the chance to go and see top level professional squash at the Singapore Squash Open held at OCBC arena. In the last session, we conducted a fun squash skills challenge to see how much improvement had been made over the course of the programme. We are in discussion with SportCares about continuing and expanding the programme in 2023 when ASICS will come on board as a partner to support the programme with footwear and apparel.

The committee is also considering offering a few of these promising girls a chance to train with our other JSMs on Saturdays. Stay tuned for more details.

Wine Circle

The Wine Circle had an event with boutique Australian winery Peterson’s on 31 October, featuring a presentation from their sommelier Joe Keats. Peterson’s brought along some special treats from their museum stock, as well as some lovely examples of their current offerings.

Attendees were treated to a four-course dinner at The Padang Restaurant with eight wine pairings including Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet, as well as a fun wineknowledge contest.

On 14 November, it was “A Journey To Italy: Food, Wines, Stories, and Memories”, which actually had the privilege of kicking off a special event-filled week devoted to food and beverage from that country, and the Wine Circle collaborated with the Italian Trade Agency to make it happen.

David Marchiori, the executive Chef of GIO Gourmet Italian Osteria, took over The Padang Restaurant’s kitchen for an evening to serve the six courses of food, while Ethica Wines co-founder Giovanni Oliva selected six special wines for the occasion. The Italian ambassador attended as well.

At the time of writing, the next event will take place on 22 December and is a year-end celebration featuring a recap of some wines featured at earlier events and as well as a presentation from “Rags” Raghavan.
