CLUB NEWS

Dear Members,

The 68th edition of the Societe Generale SCC International Rugby Sevens Tournament held at the Padang from 30 October to 1 November was a rousing success featuring new top-class professional club teams. The riveting game play on the field kept rugby enthusiasts on the edge of their seats. Special thanks to our Title Sponsor, Sponsors, Box Patrons and Advertisers as well as all others whose involvement and immense support contributed to the fruition of one of SCC’s premier club tournaments. A report on all the highlights of the tournament will be available in the next issue of the magazine. Still on the sports front, Team SCC once again emerged victorious at the 38th Annual Pot Games against the Tanglin Club. Battling many close calls, SCC fought hard and retained the Cup this year – a sterling example of the excellent sporting tradition that has become a hallmark of the Club. I am pleased to note that Members and guests of the recently held SCC’s iconic Night Race Fiesta enjoyed three days of motor racing action on and off the circuit. The weekend proved to be an eventful one and I would like to thank all in attendance for your patronage. We look forward to your continuous support of more of our events in the months ahead.

Capt. Baldev Singh President Singapore Cricket Club

We cordially invite you to join us in remembering the soldiers and civilians who had served with pride and honour in the two world wars. The Remembrance Day Memorial Service will be held on 11 November at the Cenotaph. Celebrate Christmas at the SCC with a whole host of activities planned exclusively for you and your loved ones – from a safari themed children’s party to the annual festive lucky draw. Also, ring in the new year with our ‘Fire and Ice’ New Year’s Eve party. I wish all Members warm season’s greetings and a joyous New Year in the company of family and friends and we look forward to your continued patronage at the Club.

Empress Place Rescue Archaeology Excavation

pair of dirt-covered youngsters patiently peel back a layer of sediment with their trowels. Overhead, a 60 ton long-arm mechanical excavator hoists a pile of steel rebars into a trench. Meters away welders in asbestos overalls slice through 10m iron sheet piles with their acetylene blowtorches. The two volunteer archaeological field assistants paid no mind to the high pitch screech of a compressor behind them and quietly and skillfully removed a ceramic vessel from the Yuan Dynasty (c. 1271-1368) out of the sand. Standing in shin-deep mud another member of the archaeology team patiently sieved through the foul-smelling riverine silt accumulated over the last 800 years. Elsewhere on the site, a dusty and weathered archaeologist monitors a mechanical backhoe at work, guiding the machine’s massive creaking steel caterpillar threads through the no-go zones. Everywhere around the sunburnt individual were little red vinyl flags demarcating archaeological deposits. Between January and April 2015, a small crew of volunteers and archaeologists from the Archaeology Unit, Nalanda Sriwijaya Centre, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies have been monitoring and excavating the site at Empress Place. Ostensibly, as part of the SG50 celebrations, dramatic redevelopment and landscaping for the Singapore Riverfront area were carried out. Within the redevelopment zone, the Empress Place lawn fronting the Victoria Concert Hall and Theatre, underwent extensive remodeling involving the massive engineering feat of transplanting 8 existing mature rain trees. Beneath these lawns lies the ancient settlement of Temasek or Singapura dating between the 14th and 17th centuries.

Empress Place Rescue Archaeology Excavation II

THE PADANG

November / December 2015

Staffed entirely with a Singaporean crew, the archaeology team works 12-14 hour days and 7 days a week. This is the largest development driven rescue archaeological excavation ever undertaken in Singapore. In total some 3 tons of artifacts from the pre-modern and pre-colonial Singapore were recovered. “The variety of artifacts uncovered is phenomenal”, says the project’s Finds Manager, veteran archaeological volunteer (and SCC family member) Ms. Margaret Wong, “the diversity of finds presents new light into the activities of ancient Singaporeans. We are finding hundreds of objects from this site that were never before seen in the past 30 years of archaeological excavations!” Some highlights include religious iconography

Longquan Porcelain Platter

Buddhist Devotee Figurine

in the likes of a Buddhist figurine; objects of ornamental nature such as carnelian and crystal beads, glass bangles and worked sandstone; utilitarian items like copper cash; and large quantities of ceramics encompassing Chinese blue-green celadon porcelain. Albeit detailed post-excavation analysis have yet to start, some preliminary observations may be made from the findings. The archaeology team believes that they have identified the ancient riverfront and shoreline of ancient Temasek, which has over the last five centuries, possibly due to natural silting shifted further south to its present estuary. The site was also likely a densely populated or an area of high traffic, with evidence for commercial activities, as well as industries like metalworking. Ancient Temasek Timber

A sub-surface investigation of the Padang and the Cricket Club’s grounds was also conducted. The archaeology team established a series of auger cores to determine the pre-Raffles shoreline of Singapore. Project team member Aaron Kao who led the probe at the Padang says, “our core samples suggest that the ancient shoreline before the reclamation works in the 19th and 20th centuries, ran through the present netball court of the Cricket Club, and likely extended towards Beach Road”. Previously several test trenches were dug in 2009 and 2003 on the Padang revealing pockets of artifacts. The recent cores confirm that extensive archaeological deposits still remain beneath the field. In Singapore, all archaeological sites have their unique characteristics, Empress Place would likely stand out as the site with the highest density of artifacts ever uncovered, amongst which innumerable are never before recovered previously in Singapore. The information and data gleaned from the archaeology would enable the understanding of the activities and trends of ancient Singaporeans. Important questions such as - who were the Singaporeans of the past? What did they do? What happened to them? – will serve as a solemn guide in our present search for our own identity and future.

Sub-Surface Survey of the Padang

Sediment Cores from the Padang

As Singapore celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence, the significance in reflecting on our historical identity cannot be more appropriate, as volunteer Ms. Christabel Khoo, who helps out after-hours and during the weekends, declares, “this is one of the most meaningful projects ever undertaken in Singapore. I am proud to have played a small part in saving ancient Singapore”. The project is supported by the National Heritage Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

CC held its signature event – the Night Race Fiesta at the Clubhouse from 18 – 20 September. In commemoration of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, the Club was decked in red and white as well as other iconic race themed decoration. There were activities aplenty for everyone from the life-size race car simulator parked at the Main Lounge to the fun-filled children’s activity room with its bouncy castle, Wii video games and movies. Members were also entertained by the charming and effervescent table-top girls parading around the Club. Strategically placed big screens around the Club also ensured Members never missed a single thrilling moment of the main event – the 2015 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix street race – the first of its kind in Asia.

At the invitation of Chairman, Games Control Board, Mr Richard Stapley Oh, 12 boys from the Boys’ Town were given the opportunity to partake in the race festivities as part of SCC’s continuous efforts at community engagement. Each boy received a goodie bag with SCC merchandise. Dining at the various food and beverage stations at the Club, they enjoyed the buzz of the preliminary races. The boys had a wonderful time with us and would most certainly be reminiscing of their time at the Club. With endless entertainment, delicious food and beverages all around, it was certainly an exciting weekend to remember. The SCC sincerely thanks its Members for their valued patronage at this years’ Night Race Fiesta and looks forward to your continued support at our other upcoming events. 32

BALUT

M

AY THE ‘FOURS’ BE WITH YOU! It is the lowest number on the Balut score sheet. Yet the red ‘4’ remains a formidable dice on any throw.

You need it for any Straight. It’s a good Pair on which to build a House. The more 4s you get the more points goes into the first slot on the sheet. And best yet is all Fours gets you a Balut, at 30 points, the highest you can score in a game.

The Andersens and Stokkmos prepare for the Battle Balut in Kuching

And so it is when your Baluteer friends call out a collective ‘May the Fours be with You’ command to will the dice to roll your way. A number of other catch phrases are often heard during games, much to the amusement of new players. There’s ‘dinky doo’ for needing a 2; “‘house’ your brother/sister” when a House is desired…and the list goes on, some of which are not for publication! In any one game each player makes 21 throws of the dice, and inevitably an audible prayer comes with every throw. There’s no denying there is a level of strategic thinking in Balut, but bottom line is: LUCK is the name of the game. The heat WAS on for the Inter-Club League After five closely contested rounds, and one final round to go, there were a mere 88 points separating SCC Team 2 from pole position occupied by Indian Association’s Team 2. At the individual level, convenor John Taylor had sprinted ahead of the pack, followed closely by our own Kiran Kaur. After the final round hosted by SCC at the Padang restaurant on 21 October, SCC Team 3 emerged the winners of Round 6 as well as bagged runners up in the overall league championship. Unfortunately they were narrowly inched out by Indian Association who were overall champions.

Team SCC ready to rock and roll the dice

The Kuching Game Three teams participated in the 2nd Invitational Sarawak Tour over the weekend of 12-14 September. Unfortunately there were no wins to report for SCC on this occasion – the winners being the Sandakan Yacht Club – nonetheless it was a most enjoyable tour, thanks to the hosts, the Sarawak Club. Sandakan bound It’s that time again for the annual Interport Games, the 35th in the series, this one hosted by the Sandakan Yacht Club. A total of 4 teams have signed up for the Games; the tour is from 27 to 29 November. Will we bring back the trophy? Year-end celebrations Save the date for Friday 11 December for our yearend Christmas party at the Padang restaurant. Great food, entertainment and camaraderie are on the agenda. Join us in a fitting finale to a fun-filled year of Balut.

Kiran and John took the top two spots respectively for best overall individuals.” Well done Team SCC! Victorious Vashi The Force was with Vashi Sajnani at our Section Night on 22 September. Not only did the affable baluteer score the highest in round #5 with a healthy score of 150, he made it to the overall top with 676 points, taking home the coveted Chivas12 for his effort. Coming in second and playing single-handedly, literally, as she was still recovering from a fall and hence had one hand in a sling, was Sunita Kapoor with 642 points. Imagine what Sunita could have scored if she used both her hands!!

risbane Tattersall’s Club sent a contingent of players who brought along loads of joy and laughter for a friendly snooker match on 14 September 2015. We managed to secure a good win for the evening’s match, and I’m sure our guests enjoyed the roast beef and pasta arranged by our Captain, Mr Tan Bak Choon.

For the upcoming events, we will have the Tanglin Pot games on 3 October and will commence with our in-house tournaments after that. The snooker boys will have to arrange a trip down to Penang too for our interport with Penang Club. Details will be announced once we firm up the dates.

We hosted our interport game with Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) on 25 September 2015. As much as we tried to reciprocate, in terms of Singaporeans and hospitable SCC Club Members, we could have done better. From our unforgettable and memorable experiences, there is no denying that they far exceeded in the hospitality scale.

I would like to take this opportunity to proudly announce that our Section Member Peter Gilchrist, won the 2015 World Billiards Championship (Point Format). He convincingly defeated the defending champion, Pankaj Advani of India 6-4 in the final of 2015 World Billiards (150-Up) Championship held in Adelaide on 23 September 2015. Together with all my Section Members, I would like to congratulate Peter Gilchrist. Not only was this an excellent 50th birthday present for Singapore, he made the Billiards & Snooker Section and Singapore Cricket Club proud.

Our 5-car transport picked them from the airport when they arrived and we brought them straight to their favourite chicken rice joint for lunch. On the match day proper, we had a good team of players who participated in the interport game. Even though we gave it our best shot, it was indeed not easy to beat these Thai boys. Great food and whiskey was served the whole evening, and we had a good turnout of supporters who joined us that evening too. We even had the honour of the Club President, Capt Baldev Singh, and the Deputy President, Mr Brian Teo, who graced this event; with the President presenting the trophy to the tournament champion RBSC.

he Annual General Meeting of the SCC Bridge Section was held on Thursday 20 August 2015 at the Gilmour Room. The committee members for year 2015 remains unchanged. The highest scoring pair of the evening Mike Sharples and King Fook Chan won a bottle of wine each. The Section, for the rest of the year and the next, will focus on organising games, providing training and holding special events. Plans are ongoing for a Whist Night (another card game) to be held in November. It will be an evening of fun and camaraderie with Members of other Sections. The game will commence at 7pm with food and drinks provided. Members will be provided with a written format for the event, as well as a guide on how to play Whist will be given to the teams taking part prior to the event. It will be conducted in a round robin format. More information on this will be sent to all the SCC Sections. The committee is also keen to invite other clubs to play bridge at the SCC in interclub events. These games will most probably be held between January and March 2016. It was also agreed that starting in 2016, there would be a monthly bridge social event with snacks and soft drinks provided. A prize will be awarded to the highest scoring pair of the evening. Plans for training have not been ignored either. Carl has been requested to provide training for the team players at 7pm on 28 September prior to the Pot Games on 3 October. The objective is to revise and standardise the nuances of the game across all players. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided by the Section. A training session for beginners is also being planned and will

be held in November. Publicity for this is being planned. A notice will also be placed on the Bridge Section notice board. Our annual tradition of special events such as the Deepavali celebration on 9 November 2015 and the Christmas celebration on 10 December 2015 are in the pipeline too. It is confirmed that finger food and soft drinks would be provided at the Deepavali special event. A traditional spread for the Christmas event will follow. Moving forward, the committee will implement all the above plans for the year and many others too.

SCC Dominates at Kallang

The winning SCC team with their haul of trophies

T

he SCC lawn bowls team has seen dominant SCC players play on grass since SCC has the only grass green in Singapore. However, it is a well-known fact that SCC bowlers can be competitive on other artificial surfaces too. In a recent competition hosted by Lawn Bowls Association for the Disabled, Singapore (LBAD) at Kallang, the SCC team showed the local bowling scene that SCC is pretty much still one of the top bowling teams in Singapore.

were unlucky not to make the finals as they missed out on shot difference narrowly.

A total of six teams participated in the competition consisting of singles, pairs and triples over three weekends where every team will play each other in a round robin format, with the top two making it to the finals, winner takes all. The SCC team consists of Mary Lim, Loh Hui Shan, Chng Ming Li, Shermeen Lim, Edmund Lin and Melvin Tan rotating over the three weekends in all formats of competition. Of the six teams, two were from LBAD, one from Singapore Power, one from ELBC team and one from the President’s team. Competitions were tough as three of SCC’s competitors consist of active National team players who ply their skills playing bowls at the Kallang green.

In the singles competition, the combination of Shermeen Lim and Melvin Tan pretty much dominated proceedings during the round robin stage by progressing comfortably into the finals. SCC will meet Leng Li Li from Singapore Powers in the finals.

SCC was not to be denied in the finals. Melvin Tan put on a spectacular show to see off Leng Li Li 21-5 in the singles tournament, finishing her off within an hour. The team of Mary Lim and Chng Ming Li showed incredible teamwork and put on a steady performance to win the pair’s finals 17-13. 015 has not been a year upon which we can look back with undiluted pleasure. It has, as a certain eminent old lady put it, turned out to be an “Annus Horribilis”.

In May, our bowlers watched with horror as our beautiful Bowls Green which had graced the front of the Club for over 140 years and endured bombing by Japanese fighter jets in WWII was torn up into shreds to accommodate massive stone blocks and steel rigging for the National Day parade. And soon after, the dreary haze descended, adding to our misery. George presenting the SCC plaque to KBA

In the midst of despair, GC member and former convenor, Mr George Abraham took the initiative to organise a bowls tour to Kochi, India in August, with support from CGCB Mr Richard Stapley-Oh. A total of 13 SCC bowlers and three supporters eagerly joined the tour. The Kerala Bowling Association (KBA) was our host and their Green is tucked in front of the CIAL Golf Club in lush green countryside, in the state locals proudly call “God’s Own Country”. Two millennia ago, the monsoon winds that brought rain to Kerala also filled the sails of ships with Greeks, Arabs, Jews, Romans, merchants and mariners from across the world. In A.D. 47, long before Vasco Da Gama arrived in 1498, Pliny, the Roman philosopher, described a port near Kochi as “primum emporium indiae” – India’s first emporium. The KBA Green however had not been managed for many months and was in very bad shape. Our bowlers were “challenged” to hurl their bowls with considerable force and wobbling bowls over treacherous hard sand, bumps and slopes was the order of the day. But the younger Kerala bowlers were clearly driven to win and rose to the occasion to wrest the trophy on the final day, 1-3 rinks.

This was the KBA’s first experience of hosting a foreign team and notwithstanding the enormity of the difficulties they faced; they were most hospitable, hosting the final day reception at a resort hotel nearby where we exchanged plaques and souvenirs. Our bowlers stayed behind for two more days to enjoy the sights and sounds of Kerala, a lazy whole day cruise on a houseboat from Allepey, drifting down hyacinth-covered backwaters that snaked through padi fields, stopping only for a dash of Toddy and a fresh coconut drink followed next day with a visit to Fort Cochin, its churches and Jewtown, sipping Kingfisher, eating “fish fry” and checking out the fishing nets that Admiral Cheng Ho and his Chinese Fleet introduced in the 15th century. All in all, it was a memorable tour.

ith all the skill and flair of international darts champions, the President of SCC Captain Baldev Singh and GC Members Ms Joyce Foster, Mr Parasuram Krishnan and Mr George Abraham flighted their darts accurately to burst the bright blue balloons to commence the Annual Darts Bullseye Tournament at SCC. This intersection event is an annual event and is very well supported by the various Sports Sections as evidenced by their staunch support and great enthusiasm for Darts. Eleven teams participated with a keen competitive spirit. They were Cricket, Tennis and Balut which bravely participated with two teams. Soccer, Squash, Lawn Bowls, Billiards & Snooker, Netball, Bridge and of course our very athletic minded GC Team of Ms Foster, Mr George Abraham and Mr Parasuram. In the warm ambience of the Oval Restaurant and with all four Dart Boards being played, the teams rubbed shoulders and competed in a very convivial manner. The Darts Section Members were there to assist and support all the participants and encourage them in the tournament. A great time was had by all especially with the generous flow of beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The good food was

very generously provided for by the Darts Section and prepared by our ever hardworking F&B Team. Needless to say that imbibing was encouraged to ensure the flight of the dart towards the bull’s eye was smooth and effortless. As with all tournaments there were some upsets and two seeded darts players were knocked out by a participant, Ms. Sally from Tennis and our very own GC Member Ms Foster sent the second seeded player packing. The champions were Soccer Section with Squash Section being the Runners-Up and Balut who strategically fielded two teams placed third. The Members of the Darts Section say “muchisimas gracias” to SCC President and GC Members who graced the event and all the other Sports Sections for participating so enthusiastically and making this annual tournament another huge success. Again, Soccer Section walked out of the Oval victorious. Winners 1st Soccer 2nd Squash 3rd Balut

e had a very successful and enjoyable SCC Annual Golf Tournament on 9 September at the Sentosa Golf Club - Serapong course followed by a sumptuous dinner at the Padang restaurant. The event was well attended by about 120 Section and Non-Section Members, guests, sponsors and the Golf section was most honoured to have the presence of our Club President, Deputy President, Chairman of GCB, and other GC members. We thank Captain Peter Salt for being a great emcee and as usual the live wire of the evening. Once again the whole event would not have been so well managed and successful without the efforts of our SCC Sporting staff headed by Thipa, Ken and the sports team - thank you. The committee wish to thank all our sponsors: - Borneo Motor for the Lexus Hole-in-One prize; Silk Express for the air tickets, and hotel accommodations for two to Tokyo as a Hole-in-One prize. Regretfully our Hole-in-One specialist Allan Muir didn’t take advantage of it. Many thanks to our lucky draw sponsors: - Bank of Singapore for their generous door gift prizes; Ram Pacific for the Remowa cabin bag; Soluxe hotel for giving away 4 air tickets with two nights stay at Soluxe Hotel Kota Kinabalu; Victor Olsen for air tickets to Bangkok; Gayatri Restaurant for donating golf balls and dinner vouchers; Coca restaurant Singapore and Brazil Churrascaria for the Dining vouchers and Khong Guan Biscuits. SCC hosted Tanglin Club on 29 September for the Golf Pot Games at the Warren Golf Club. A selection of golfers was made

by Captain Peter Salt. Captain selected 20 competitive golfers and we had two social flights. Regretfully, the game was hazed out so both Captains declared a draw. SCC Hockey features prominently in medal hunt on all fronts

B

eing a premier sports Club in the heart of Singapore comes with tremendous pressure. A pressure to that bears testament to what our country’s founding father, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew thought about this Club we all know and love. The statesman extraordinaire said back in 1977 during the Club’s 125th year celebrations, “there is an indefinable quality about this club which no other club can match. It bridges the transformation from what was, to what is and represents our capacity to meet what will be”. Given this huge “burden” placed on us, our Members have worked tirelessly on the sporting front to deliver success much like how Singapore as a country has been known to do likewise. Almost aptly in this 50th year of Singapore’s independence SCC on the hockey scene has been a competitive force in every league it has participated in.

SCC entered six teams to play in six out of the seven National Leagues. Featuring in all but the National Hockey League (NHL) 3, NHL 2 and National Women’s League (NWL) 2 ended in August where our 2nd XI Men finished second mere 3-points adrift of champions Jansenites. Our 2nd XI ladies started the season in buoyant fashion but after the lengthy SEA Games break their quest for the title fizzled off but they nonetheless finished the season a valiant 4th just 2-points adrift of a most deserved bronze medal. There must be something in the SCC air this season post the Padang conquering SG50 National Day Parade as all the remaining four teams have been in fabulous form. Starting

from NHL 5, where our 4th XI Men have grown from strength to strength and now sit on the cusp of reaching the all-important finals if they win their remaining two matches against Jansenites and Barkerities. If they win these games they will reach the finals and play against ORA-RI, the only side to have been beaten by them to date. At the least these exceptional group of players have secured a bronze medal play-off spot. A much deserved medal for their efforts week in week out to date. The NHL 4 gentlemen have never failed to amaze us. With an average age of 39 years across a team of 27 players these guys were placed in a very tough NHL 4 featuring some exciting and young talent. Including two teams that were relegated from NHL 3 by a couple of points only. Nonetheless they have not only held their own but have held firm to their hockey philosophy and delivered week after week to not sit in second spot with a game to play. A game which if they win, they will most likely make the finals against Eagles who are littered with highly talented players. The team spirit, with the emphasis on spirit is second to none and I look forward to seeing them make this final or at the least bring home a medal of any colour, gold of course preferred. The 1st XI ladies were hampered with missing key players due to work and injuries and are currently second but with other results going their way, it looks likely that the league title would be a straight fight between them and our “friendly” neighbours SRC. SRC have to play Jansenites, the other ladies hockey force in Singapore twice and if they drop points, our ladies have a massive chance to prise the title away from them - we are looking at Silver, an improvement from last season’s bronze. Finally, the star of our season thus far - our 1st XI men. Under the guidance of our 1st XI coach, Ken Forbes and some key recruitment, the team has started the season without a blemish winning all five of their games. At half way mark of the NHL 1 season we are 3-points ahead of SRC and six ahead of defending champions Jansenites. If we win the next four matches the title is ours which I am told would be the first in the history of the Club. Our men have their feet firmly rooted on the ground and are taking one game at a time but whatever the outcome come mid-November, this has been one of the best seasons in terms of results for SCC hockey. Watch this space for more on our SCC Hockey foray in the National League.

ongratulations to the Eagles for finishing the season third on the podium for the Energizer League run by Netball Singapore. Of the seven games in a season five were wins for the Eagles. A fantastic result indeed.

Thank you ladies for putting up a good “fight”, team spirit and securing some awesome wins. We could not ask for more than this from the dream team who gave their time and effort by showing up for all the games: Susan Gunnery, Erin Lavelle, Fiona Chesney, Jessica Bilton, Sophie Kidson, Kyesha Abdullah, Alcina Tan, Kerry Jane Brown, Penny Hands, Davina Shields, Camilla, Genevieve Chase, Rachael Bell and Co-Captains Lee Anne Keats and M. Fathima.

farewell to her as she sets off to pastures new. We also bid a fond farewell to Andrea Tolley and Man Yun Tan, two core members of our team who are making London their new home – good luck! With these departures and a couple welcoming babies into the world, we now look to re-build our team and attract new members; so if you are keen come and join us! As a final highlight we also fielded a combined Eagles and Hawkes team in the Pesta Sukan carnival, the day was a great example of the Section coming together. While we didn’t make it out of the pool rounds the team had a great day and a lot of fun.

A special mention goes to our coach Hui Mui. Thank you so much for your belief in our team. All of us agree that our standard of play has stepped up because of training which includes our ability to execute a winning strategy and our fitness with most players being able to stay consistent for all four quarters. The Hawks have also had a positive season finishing fourth in the league in a tough division. We had some fantastic play at the beginning of the season and showed that we had built a really strong team; this resulted in many consecutive wins and a few very narrow losses. Unfortunately the end of the season was marred by absences, which is a shame as we felt we could have really challenged the teams in different circumstances. The ‘Woman of the Season’ goes to Anna Bridgman (our old club captain), who in defence was solid and responsible for many turnarounds; she definitely went out on a high as we say

Soc Gen SCC Prems and HKFC

L

essons from Hong Kong as we move into the season proper Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) toured Singapore on 5 September, playing the Societe Generale SCC Prems at Dempsey. A determined Prems put up a determined fight but HKFC largely dominated the encounter. The Societe Generale SCC Growlers met Bucks Vets earlier in the day but a youngish and quite handy Bucks Vets was too much for the World Champions. Disappointment on the field was overcome with a fantastic post-match at Stumps with the terrace and bar packed out for an epic evening. 12 September saw the Growlers, Prems and Societe Generale SCC Academy head up to Hong Kong to play Societe Generale Valley. Growlers this time did the Club proud with a sterling performance in the afternoon heat, and would have won had any match official seen the ball go through the posts. The Prems unfortunately were under the cosh again, fronting up against a professional and very well drilled Valley outfit. As always, post-match festivities made the tour, culminating in some fantastic ballads by Dale “wedding singer Taylor, and Mee Man on Karaoke Dominance, and that LKF Street Party no one can remember going to.

Hong Kong this year proved a bit of a lesson for us. Whilst Valley 1st XV is comprised of a number of professional paid players against our non-professional team line up, with HKFC there was no such excuses. With 9 rugby teams, significant financial support from their club and a large number of Sports Members (including a deeply discounted Elite Sports Membership category to attract the best) HKFC really showed us what the SCC needs to be aiming for in the future if we are to remain competitive in Asian rugby. Back in Singapore, the Societe Generale SCC Colts returned to their winning ways with a convincing 52-5 demolition of Blacks RFC on 12 September at Dempsey. A huge effort by our newest team and a well-deserved win. So as October begins to unfold, the season and a brand new league structure is finally upon us. Thanks to the determined efforts of Section Manager Mike Cosnett (who pretty much thought up the new league structure) we are looking at lots of rugby from October to April next year. Everyone in the Section owes Mike a beer for that one. The much awaited Societe Generale SCC 7s will commence on 30 October among many others. Stay tuned!

Winning Team at the SCC Annual Intersection Darts Tournament

T

he Soccer Section once again motored to victory in the annual SCC Intersection Dart’s tournament. In fact, one might say that we took teams from the other Sections for a ride as we cruised to a comfortable win. We put ourselves in the driver’s seat with easy wins over the General Committee and Balut in the group stage. We moved into a higher gear in the knockout stages easily taxiing past challenges presented by teams from the Tennis, Billiards and Snooker and Squash Sections.

Some Members of the audience shouted “boring” during the trophy presentation.(This is the third time in a row the Soccer Section has triumphed in this event.) We sincerely hope we didn’t put a dent in anyone’s pride or cause anyone to get a bee in their bonnet; we expect the other teams to fare better in next year’s event. Congratulations to the team comprising of Jeroen Goldman; Kelvin Teo and Anthony Houlahan for a cracking performance. Certainly no passengers among those three.

Players in the Hollandse Club friendly

S

ocial Squash @ SCC The main competitions of the Singapore squash season were completed by the end of June and after a couple of months break, we enter a period of more social squash which is dominated by Cosmo, but we also hold annual events between Hollandse, The American Club and the British Club. This year we had three social matches with varying results. Orange Bowl vs Hollandse Club It was SCC’s turn to host. We established an early lead which was cut back to a one match lead as we ended the first half of the scheduled matches. However our middle order came through strongly. We won the next seven matches and finished up 14-7 winners. This was a small recompense for our 13-7 defeat the previous year at Hollandse Club. In the evening at the presentation ceremony, it was announced that the annual event would be renamed the Gautam Mukerjee Cup after the driving force of Hollandse squash who has since passed away. Ashes vs British Club We were away to the British Club for this event which is now in its 13th year. Having won 9-2 the previous year it was important that we got the balance of players right this year. This did not appear to be the case when SCC won the first six matches, but order was restored with British Club clawing back to be one match down with three to play. SCC managed to win two of the next three matches providing SCC with a 9-7 win. Americas Cup vs The American Club Having lost the first match against the American Club the previous year, we were determined to regain our pride and win this year. The format was similar to the first two social matches above except they introduced a wrinkle, giving players the incentive of half a point for each game won. Matches were 6-6 with two matches to go which unfortunately we lost resulting in an 8-6 defeat in matches and a bigger margin in points. Celebrations for End of League Season 2015 The Squash Section celebrated the end of the National Squash League with a dinner on Saturday, 29 August at the Padang Restaurant. It was a fun-filled night with an overwhelming turnout of 80 attendees. Brian Van Gingkel, our Secretary was 50

Andrea Nicholas, our Convenor, gave an inspirational speech about the history and significance of sports to SCC. This was followed by the presentation of trophies and medals to the League winners by Manminder Singh, the Men’s Captain. The Men’s A SCC1 and B teams won their grade, C Grade SCC2 were 3rd and E grade were 4th. Ben Sim won the Player of the League Award for his outstanding performance this year. He started off in B grade and ended the season promoted to A2 grade after playing up successfully in A grade. Joannah Yue, Singapore’s top ladies’ player presented the award to Ben. The entertainment continued with the team Captains presenting a fun gift for a player in their team. It was usually accompanied by a funny story about why the person received the gift. For example, chopsticks were presented to Woffles Wu for realigning someone’s nose when his opponent’s racket decided to make unexpected contact and makeup remover for Serena Choo, who would make time for her games right after work. As our courts were under repair post National Day, the matches were played at our temporary home courts at the Fairmont Hotel.

It was a hot day and the eight matches featuring Men’s, Ladies’ and mixed doubles were hotly contested. Eventually, SCC won the tie 5-3. Thank you to all who played and supported. Overseas competition Natasha (L) and Nadine Loh (R) Over the summer holidays, another Junior Sports Member Sofia Antipatis kept herself busy with training and playing lots of competitions in sunny Barcelona and not-always-so-sunny Scotland. Her three-week training in Barcelona followed after a week of hiking up the French Alps with UWC. In Barcelona, she played and won the U-16 competition. She then played multiple tournaments in Scotland and was runner up in the U-16 and U-18 tournaments in Aberdeen. Coming from Singapore, Sofia needed to get used to playing with multiple layers of clothes as the temperature dropped to as low as nine degrees in the height of summer!
