PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

The recently concluded 8th SCC International Soccer Sixes tournament saw the participation of many teams – both new and returning favourites. It was a successful weekend of sporting action on the Padang. A special mention goes to the youth participants who displayed exemplary sportsmanship and team spirit. On behalf of the Club, I thank all teams, our kind sponsors, supporters and volunteers for making this tournament a very memorable one. The full report with all the highlights can be found in this issue. Singapore will soon celebrate its 51st year of independence. SCC has borne witness to the building of this nation – the Padang on which we have stood for the past 164 years has seen many historic events as well as recent modern developments and we are proud to call it home. One of SCC’s signature events of the year, the Night Race Fiesta will once again be held in September. I invite you to join us at the Club to witness the spectacular night race right on our ‘front porch’ and enjoy the plentiful offerings of delicious food and beverages as well as the fringe activities to commemorate this event. More information is available within the pages of ‘The Padang’.

Mohan Bhojwani President Singapore Cricket Club

In the spirit of the upcoming festivities, my General Committee and I wish all our Muslim members Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and to all SCC members, Happy 51st National Day.

CLUB NEWS

Overlooking the historic Singapore River, the grand ballroom of the Grand Copthorne Waterfront hotel was awash in a vast spectrum of colours on 23 April 2016. Members of staff dressed in their colourful best arrived at the hotel in eager anticipation of the SCC Annual Staff Party. Pre-event activities such as the ever-popular instant photo booth proved once again to be a hit with many flocking to the booth to pose for photos. A novel activity this year was the caricature shrink art keychain which quickly became a crowd favourite with many standing in line for their keepsake. The staff was addressed first by Ms Adeline Tan, Financial Controller who thanked all for their diligent efforts in their work throughout the year. In a similar vein, former President Capt. Baldev Singh too conveyed his appreciation of the staff and encouraged progressive efforts in all areas of the Club.

Rection’ from the Sports Department featuring a unique combination of drumming and vocal stylings won top prize for the best team performance. The staff was also serenaded by Kassim who took to the stage with a melodious rendition of Billy Ocean’s ‘Suddenly’. In addition, a performance that had everyone amazed was Shaikh Ekteja’s skilful tearing of coconut husk with nothing but his teeth! There were winners galore that evening with 30 lucky draw prizes plus three mystery draw prizes drawn on stage that night. Five lucky staff members were also surprised with a ‘treat’ of S$100 cash each that was spontaneously sponsored by ex-GC Member and ex-Chairman of the Food & Beverage Subcommittee, Mr. Dinakaran Appiah (Dino).

Staff Party 2016 Organising Committee

This year, the Club honoured and presented 18 members of staff with Long Service Awards, the individuals listed below have served between 5 and 20 years with commendable dedication. With the party off to a great start, staff proceeded to have their fill of the international buffet spread which included a lavish assortment of dishes. In addition, a halal buffet spread was specially prepared for SCC’s Muslim staff.

Serene Chew from the Membership Department won the top lucky draw prize of S$1,688 cash whilst Jolene Yam from the Finance and Administrative Department won the top mystery draw prize of a 3 days /2 nights package at the Sunrise Ocean Villas in Phuket, Thailand that was generously sponsored by SCC Members - Mr. Robin C Tessensohn and Mr. Kevin G Parnell, in addition to a top-up of S$500 cash by the Club. The 2016 Staff Party soon came to a colourful close with many leaving with fond memories and shared camaraderie already in anticipation of the next one!

Once appetites were sated, the buoyant atmosphere was further amplified with a fun and exciting series of games and activities conducted by the humorous and engaging emcee. Staff had a wonderful time interacting and bonding with their fellow peers. One of the highlights of the evening was the ‘3 Minutes of Fame’ segment featuring choreographed team performances ranging from a vibrant dance to a creative display of vocal cords to energetic beats and dance moves which drew applause and enthusiastic cheers around the ballroom. CELEBRATING OUR NATION’S 51 ST BIRTHDAY

Images from the Past

By Dr K. U. Menon

As we celebrate 51 years of nationhood in August, it is worth remembering that the SCC has an illustrious history stretching back over 164 years. The Club and the lush green Padang that once faced the sea has stood witness to so much of Singapore’s tumultuous history. Originally called The Plain, English and Indian troops were quartered here on the green space fronting the clubhouse soon after the founding of modern Singapore in 1819. One rich source of memories of the Club are to be found in postcards that were popular from the late 1800s. There is evidence from archaeology that as soon as the written word appeared, the ancient Assyrians began sending mail as early as 1900 BC, and sealed letters have remained a principal form of communication until today. The direct ancestor of the postcard which materialised in Europe in the 1870s was envelopes printed with pictures. The Straits Settlements (incorporating Singapore, Penang & Malacca under British Colonial rule) issued its first postcard in 1879. Today, deltiology – or the collection of postcards is a popular hobby but only among a few. Our own National Archives of Singapore (NAS) has recently issued a reprint of its popular compilation of Singapore Historical Postcards, first published in 1986.

The first two images we have of the Club, extracted from postcards available in the archives are dated c.1890s and shows the early Cricket Club pavilion at the far end of the lawn.

The next clear image of the pavilion below shows the third clubhouse of SCC completed in 1884. This iron framed structure was incorporated into the clubhouse’ later extensions whilst the first two buildings were demolished. Arshak C Galstaun Collection, courtesy of National Archives of Singapore

The postcard industry was reportedly a profitable business in the early 1900s with well-known international and local firms engaged in the business. Sadly, postcards, like good writing have declined with the onslaught of new media technology and the inanity of the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Instagram and emails. It would seem that the more advanced the technology, the less inclined we are to write. Postcards are a minimalist art form that conveys not just an image and a message, but also a material bit of another place and time as we can see so vividly manifest in the images of the SCC at the turn of the 19th century.

COOKING with

PASSION

SCC’s Padang Restaurant recently welcomed aboard its newest culinary talent, Chef Vikeneswaranmudhaliar S/O Muthusamy. At just 30 years of age, Chef Vik, as he is commonly known, brings with him no less than 12 years of gastronomic experience. He began his journey as a part-time kitchen helper at the Carlton Hotel in 2003 and after some years there decided to enroll at the Singapore Hotel and Tourism Education Centre (SHATEC) in 2009. Chef Vik’s culinary passion grew stronger whilst working at the Picotin Bistro and Bar in 2011 and by 2014 through sheer perseverance and hard work, he was promoted to Chef de Cuisine for their new outlet at Quayside Isle at Sentosa Cove. Renowned chefs such as Raymond Blanc, Emmanuel Stroobant and Alain Ducasse serve as inspiration to Chef Vik. He was taught countless new skills and cooking techniques by his idol Chef Stroobant which was how he developed an impressive knowledge base for French cooking methods. Under Chef Stroobants’ mentorship, Chef Vik created new dishes every week ranging from delicate appetizers to decadent desserts and he also entered a few competitions in an effort to further hone his skills. Chef Vik even won first prize in the Asian Food Channel’s Christmas Cook-Off challenge in 2013.

Braised Beef Ribs, Mashed Potato and Savoy

Adding to his diverse culinary experience is an opportunity to work with Chef Daniel Clifford. Chef Vik acquired new knowledge about cooking which enabled him to vastly improve his craft and techniques. Says Chef Vik, “As a chef I face many challenges not only in cooking but also in planning a cohesive menu as well as creating new dishes. My menu is largely based on a good mix of modern techniques and classic French cuisine. I love cooking seafood such as dover sole, king salmon, blue fin tuna and black cod.” When not firing up the stoves in the kitchen, Chef Vik enjoys fishing, collecting cookbooks and he also dabbles in food photography when Pan Seared Hokkaido Scallops with Cauliflower Puree, Seaweed time permits. He Powder, Ikura and Wasabi Meringue is thankful for the tremendous support from his family. “My mum used to work in London as a cook for 12 years and I’ve picked up many tips and recipes from her such as white wine braised chicken, cold carrot soup and spinach salad.” Chef Vik’s new a la carte menu is now available daily at the Padang Restaurant for lunch and dinner. 8TH SCC INTERNATIONAL SOCCER SIXES 4 & 5 June 2016

Article by: Owen Monaghan Chairman, 2016 Soccer Sixes Organising Committee Another SCC club tournament concluded just as quickly as it arrived. This time it was the 8th SCC International Soccer Sixes held at the glorious Padang over the weekend of 4 and 5 June. I want to start with my heartfelt thanks to the SCC Club staff who added value in the tournament in so many ways, making the tournament a smooth success. Thank you to our sponsors, especially Raymond Weil, CLA and Tiger Beer for their support. A big thank you to the committed and supportive General Committee led by the GCB Chairman Sher Baljit Singh and David Jones who were both there every step of the way throughout the weekend. And a final thank you to the Soccer Section committee and members, who gave their support and guidance in so many ways. The tournament kicked off on Saturday morning with the most important aspect of why we do what we do for this tournament, and that is the youth teams from the region. A total of five clubs participated in the youth tournament during the weekend, namely: • Bali Sport Foundation, Indonesia • Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, Singapore • Phnom Penh Crown Club, Cambodia • Sports Org, Timor Leste • Youth Football Home, Thailand

Timor Leste were debutants to the tournament and they brought so much joy to me personally with their participation under very challenging circumstances physically – their attitudes to keep going was tremendous. The rest of the teams have been participating since the beginning. It is heart-warming to see their level of football improving year after year and the matches they play, intensely competitive. The final saw Cambodia take on Bali with Cambodia emerging as winners of this year’s Youth Cup. Thank you to all the families who hosted the youths throughout the weekend welcoming them to their homes. The Open tournament saw 16 teams vying for the title with S-League’s Home Utd and SCC Firsts producing great Day 1 displays and results. It was great to have clubs such as the Hong Kong FC and Yokohama CAC participating once again adding diversity to the tournament. Newbies Tokyo Panthers performed well, both with their performance on field and kit displays and emerged Open Plate champions. Vikings Singapore overpowered all teams in the Open Cup Tournament to emerge champions. Other notable teams include the Gaelic Lions and the SCC NFL with their exuberant determination to perform. The Open Plate final saw Raymond Weil coming short against a very good Tokyo Panthers team who stole the show to win the silverware in their debut appearance. JUL / AUG 2016 THE PADANG

The Open Cup final saw the SCC Firsts take on Vikings Singapore and what a final it was! SCC was up to a comfortable 2-nil when two stunning goals swept in from the Vikings in the second half, bringing the match into the ‘golden goal’ extra time. Vikings Singapore emerged victorious with an unstoppable header for the Cup! The Masters Plate final was played between Avenue FC and Royal Selangor Club with Avenue FC edging their opponent and winning the Plate trophy. The Masters Cup tournament was a very exciting ‘who’s who’ spectacle with many ex-Singapore stars playing for many different teams. The Akashi All Stars shined with player representations from Abbas Saad, Lionel Lewis and Aide Iskandar, to name a few. The Masters Cup final was played between Hong Kong FC and the SCC Convenors with both having good semi-final

wins and of course a local club derby of sorts. The Hong Kong FC was too strong on the day though and emerged 3-1 winners to the dismay of the home crowd. The Legends tournament saw four teams, Citibank, Sima Engineering, CLA and Singapore Ex Internationals play in a mini round-robin for the trophy. The final was played between CLA and the Singapore Ex Internationals with the ex-stars coming out on top in an exciting final. My congratulations to all teams for participating and making the 2016 Soccer Sixes one to remember. A special mention to Hong Kong FC who came with three teams and brought great atmosphere to the tournament and both the Royal Selangor Club and Yokohama CAC for their efforts in traveling down to play in the tournament. Roll on 2017!

bALUT sectioN COMMITTEE 2016/17

Elected at the AGM on 24 May 2016 Convenor Tony Fisher Captain Raj Kumar Secretary John Taylor Treasurer Else Stokkmo Committee Member Yasmin Gaffoor Sunita Kapoor

PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE NEW CONVENOR Our Dear Fellow Baluteers, At the recently held Balut AGM the honour and privilege of being elected Balut Section Convenor was bestowed upon me. Whilst I would like to humbly express my sincere gratitude for your confidence, my first thoughts are, on behalf of all Section Members, to thank the incomparable John Taylor for yet another highly successful and enjoyable year. Very fortunately for all of us, John remains on the Committee as Secretary and Raj Kumar will continue his sterling work as Captain. Joining our team as Treasurer is Else Stokkmo, better known as our excellent and intrepid photographer. Whilst I generally espouse the “if it ‘ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy, all ideas and suggestions for improvements are welcome and will be discussed. Adding strength and support to this end are the two elected Committee Members, Yasmin Gaffoor and Sunita Kapoor. A busy and exciting year is already shaping up and I look forward with much anticipation to a continuation of the fellowship, fun and laughter that comprises the essence of our great Balut Section.

DATES TO REMEMBER • Saturday 9 July Padang Shield – SCC to host • Wednesday 20 July League Match at the Tanglin Club • Tuesday 26 July Monthly In-house Section Night • Saturday 30 July SCC’s Invitational Pairs Tournament • Tuesday 16 August Monthly In-house Section Night • Wednesday 24 August SCC to Host the local league Our Section remains vibrant with attendance at our monthly meetings averaging 33. At the recent AGM it was requested that more Saturday afternoon games are added – this is already on the Agenda for the next Committee Meeting. Annual Triangular SCC had the pleasure on Saturday afternoon, 4th June, of hosting the 5th Annual Triangular Tournament between NUSS, IA and SCC. Yet another wonderful and close encounter with SCC just... taking the honours with a combined score of 9365. 2nd place is IA with 9318 points and NUSS with 9277 points. At the Section’s monthly in-house on Tuesday 14th June, 31 Baluteers enjoyed, yet again, a very pleasant evening. Prema Sajnani came in 1st place with a score of 709. Raj Kumar in 2nd place with 650 points and Geoffrey Mullett 3rd place with 637 points.

9th SCC Annual Sports Awards held on 15 Apr 2016

We are coming to the middle of the year and it seems to be an even busier section for the second half of 2016. There are currently a few in-house tournaments in progress – the final of the White Ball Volunteer Handicap Tournament between Michael Yeoman and Jason Tan and both the Billiards & Snooker Open are also in progress. Do come down and support the players if you can. Most of you may have realised that we have commenced the Ladder Tournament and there are currently a few names on the ladder board at the Men’s Bar. For those who are interested, please enquire from our Committee Member or the Billiard Markers on the rules and how to participate. We welcome all Section Members to participate as we can create a Division 1 and Division 2 ladder once we gather more participation. So no matter how well or bad you play, do put your name up and join in the fun!

Penang Sports Club has also invited us to participate in their Bi-Annual Inter-club tournament held in Penang. This is a grand tournament consisting of several clubs from Malaysia, two clubs from Thailand and SCC. It will be in held September and there will be ample time for those who wish to participate to start picking up your cues to train for this tournament. We will also arrange the interport games with both Penang Sports Club and Penang Club during this tour, so do put up your name and join us for these events. That’s all for now, we hope to see more members picking up cues soon!

The 9th SCC Annual Sports Awards was held with great success on 15 April 2016. We would like to congratulate our member Mr Glenn Yeo for winning the Spirit of Sports Award. Well done! We will be heading to Bangkok from 10 to 13 June 2016 to play the much awaited interport with Royal Bangkok Sports Club and RBSC POLO Club. Captain Tan Bak Choon will be leading a team consisting of Ong Chin Leong, Sunil, Matthew, Jason Teo, Glenn Yeo, Gerald Ee and Victor Yeong to represent the Club. We are all looking forward to catching up with our Thai friends and giving them a good fight in the games. We have been invited to the Annual Inter-club Snooker Six Red Tournament hosted by the Royal Selangor Club this year to be held on 30 July 2016. Some of the teams invited are Royal Bangkok Sports Club, RBSC POLO Club and Penang Sports Club. Those who wish to participate please register your name with our Captain and he will select the best available team to represent the Section. We hope to do well in this prestigious tournament (former ‘3 Nations 6 Teams Tournament’) and bring back more good news. At the same instance, we will also arrange our interport with Royal Selangor Club a day before the tournament proper; therefore we encourage your support and participation.

BOWLS

No pasture, please! We are Bowlers!

BOWLS RETURNS TO THE PADANG On Saturday 7 May, the Green reopened. It had been closed for a year and the news of its reopening received about two weeks earlier was greeted with enthusiasm and visions of scenes not forgotten however long the wait had been. In the days leading up to “R” Day there were still workmen to be seen on the Green and keen as they well might have been to step in and test it. Section officials heeded the advice to allow its preparation to proceed without interruption. “R” Day. Names on the Board. Convenor with slips of paper, Captain and hospitality members helping out with the draws and moments after 4pm there were 19 members on the Green in 6 teams of three and two. The Tournament Director did not play and two others did not think their physical condition was up to it yet.

Have Green will bowl!

Carousel 18 started on the bell. Another member arrived shortly after and joined in to complete six teams of three. Three rounds of six ends each later and members were back at the Verandah with appropriate refreshments in hand. A soft launch had been well received and another “R” Day has been planned for June. Prizes were won by Devi’s team with ECB and George, Liew Foong’s team with KU and Jennifer, and Ganesh’s team with 34

NATIONAL PAIRS SCC entered a women’s team and two men’s teams for the 2016 National Pairs played in April. Disruptions in their schedules deprived the ladies of a real chance of winning the event but the men fared better. In the men’s event S R Ganesh and Edmund Lin were finalists and 1st runners-up, while Hui Kai Wong and Melvin Tan were 2nd runners-up. NATIONAL TRIPLES SCC entered a women’s team and two Men’s teams for the 2016 National Triples played in May. The ladies’ team of Candy Lai, Mingli Chng and Shermeen Lim reached the finals played on 29 May. The men’s teams of S R Ganesh, Edmund Lin and Christian Huang and Prem Anand, Hui Kai Wong and Melvin Tan both reached the semi-finals, also to be played on 29 May, with the finals to be played later the same day.

Mingli (Second), Candy (Lead) and Shermeen (Skip) Women’s National Triples Champions 2016

Unfortunately for Christian’s team he had a bad case of tendonitis and was under medical advice to rest, while Edmund had work commitments overseas and it was not possible to reschedule the game. In the event Christian played with Ganesh and a substitute and lost their semi-final. Melvin’s team also failed to win their semi-final and their opponents went on to win the event later. The ladies’ team played very well indeed and won their final with an end to spare. Candy, Mingli and Shermeen are the Singapore Women’s National Triples Champions of 2016! Congratulations!

BRIDGE

Convenor: Olivia Law | Article by: Chitra Varaprasad

THREE-PRONGED FOCUS Training, competitive and social play continue to be the focus of the Bridge Section. An intermediate-level training course planned for the month of May came to fruition. 19 members registered for the two-hour training session held on four Saturdays i.e. 7, 14, 21 and 28 May from 9.30am to11.30am at the Victoria Room, under the guidance of Carl Parker. Though the attendance varied, a core group was present for all the sessions and greatly benefitted from the training. The SCC Bridge Team continued to participate in the Premier Bridge League matches, hosted by the different clubs such as the NUSS, Singapore Island Country Club and Serangoon Gardens Country Club, to mention a few. The teams met with varied success, but greatly value the learning experience. The final round on 19 June will be hosted at SCC by the Bridge Section. The 9th SCC Sports Awards was held on 15 April. Olivia Law was the obvious choice for the Bridge Section’s ‘Spirit of Sport’ Award. She has been the Convenor since 2014, actively contributing to the running of the Section. This saw her organising weekly games, training sessions and special events and also taking on the role of the scribe for this magazine when required. She has worked hard for the Section and is greatly responsible for its growth in terms of quality and quantity, the latter by encouraging new members to join.

The Tanglin Club Bridge Committee invited the Section Members for a friendly social bridge game on 10 May. Two special events were also celebrated. The first was on 28 March to celebrate Easter. Food consisted of a delightful spread of small cakes and fruit, coffee, tea and Easter eggs, of course!

The second event celebrated was Vesak day on 23 May. In keeping with the occasion vegetarian finger food was served. The delicious quiche went down very well with the members. The winners of the event were Seah Beng Tee and Christopher Wong and runners-up were Firoz Khimji and Chang King Fook. The three-pronged approach will probably continue to be the focus of this Section.

MCC Cricket Team during the recent Interport, hosted by SCC

A SEASON WELL BEGUN The 2016 season is well underway for the Cricket Section and by the time you read this we will have a pretty good idea on how successful we are going to be in our quest for silverware. The Section has taken to division cricket with six teams across four divisions this year as well and has strong representation of over 100 players competing for 66 slots. If we add the JSM and Saturday XI squads to this number, the Section this year is abuzz with 170 odd active members representing the Club at various levels. We have had some very strong performances in the SCA 2016 league, notable mentions: BATTING HONOURS (Min 100 runs) Nick Dorney (SCC Cougars)

new coaching set up in place under Coach Ricky Anderson, the numbers in our youth development programme have grown strongly. In the past couple of months, SCC’s Gen Next took on Hong Kong Cricket Club and Kowloon Cricket Club, as the visiting clubs fielded their junior teams in a triangular tournament. We then went on to host the juniors from Rowlin Cricket Academy, South Africa. The notable performers are now playing division cricket with senior teams and this augurs well for the cricketing future and talent pool at the Club. At the point of writing, the Royal Selangor Club are our next opponents to visit the Padang, during the weekend of 18 and 19 June. Looking ahead in the coming months we will host other visiting teams from Scotch College, Melbourne and Royal Bangkok Sports Club. Away tours to Penang Sports Club (September) and Phuket (November) are also well slotted in to the calendar. One would also take this opportunity to congratulate David Jones for his election to the General Committee and thank him for his exemplary contribution as Convenor of the Cricket Section for over two years. Hugh Darwell takes over the reins from David as the new Convenor of the Section. Here’s wishing them all the success!

It was a matter of pride for the Section as Praveen Vijay was adjudged the best bowler by SCA for his stupendous showing in the premier division. Praveen ended the 2015 season with 21 wickets at an outstanding average of 12.52 for SCC Lions. Having the Padang back has meant that we have had the opportunity to host some of our reciprocal clubs and continue with our focus on development of youth cricket. With the 36

SCC and MCC darters

Melbourne Cricket Club Social Darts with SCC It was a great turn out by members of the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Singapore Cricket Club on 10 April 2016. We had more than 50 members from MCC turning up for Social Darts. It was an evening filled with loads of camaraderie and laughter. Everyone present had a good game of darts and the MCC players gave a good throw on the darts board. Initially, we had only 12 players who had registered for Social Darts but we were surprised with the overwhelming attendance and awesome support given by the MCC members. Philip, past SCC Darts Section captain organised the games and we wrapped the event close to 11pm. We played 301’s and 201’s – fly start and double finish. We had a good mix of SCC and MCC team members in each group. The MCC team had strong darters who were highly competitive. Many of them even trained at our Men’s Bar since their arrival at SCC.

Philip Ng chalking

Most of the MCC members returned back Down Under on 11 April 2016; it was a great and memorable way to end their sports journey with SCC. Everyone who had attended Social Darts informed us that they would definitely consider including darts as part of their sports at MCC and they truly enjoyed the event organised by SCC. Many thanks to the MCC members - Steven McCooke, Tim Herringshaw and Linden Clarke for making this event a success in getting as many teams from MCC to play the game. Many thanks also to Janet Ng, Head of SCC Sports Department for putting this together; the Sports Executives and the Food and Beverage team for their immense service to all the members, thank you. We were very glad that the SCC Members played a good host and made this a successful event. Thank you team SCC.

SCC Hockey Section jubilation on being awarded the prestigious SCC “Section of the Year” Award

SCC Men’s Team (SHF National Hockey League 1 Champion 2015) voted the “ Team of the Year”

HOCKEY SECTION HUMBLED BY HUGE RECOGNITION AT SCC ANNUAL SPORTS The Hockey Section bagged major awards at the 9th Annual SCC Sports Awards on 15 April 2016 at the Padang Restaurant. The prestigious event saw all SCC sports represented by their ‘glitterati’ in their best wears. Glamour aside, the melting of these fine people who breathe life into the Club was a joyous occasion, one that celebrates the essence of this Grand Night.

this mammoth award and Captain Mark Hollingsworth who also won the English National League title with Canterbury expressed how special the journey has been and how the entire team felt this special feeling when the season started that this was their year, and SCC’s year too.

The Hockey Section that has been quietly making inroads into the highest echelons of the local hockey scene finally rose to the occasion this time around. A very special 2015 was capped by the huge recognition bestowed on it by the judges. Nominating its most deserving members for Sports Boy and Sports Girl of the Year, Sports Feat of the Year, Sports Man and Sports Woman of the Year and Team of the Year, the Hockey Section were eager to find out where within the Club they stood. Securing both the Men’s and Ladies’ National League titles the section was excited to see if they will bag a couple of awards. As the evening rode on and the awards continued to be presented to other Sections for their fantastic achievements and Hockey stood with none! Excitement was turning to anxiety. Then came the Sports Woman of the Year award! As then GCB Richard Stapley-Oh read out the nominees and the video played he announced Catherine Wheeler to be the recipient. The ever cool and composed Cath received the award in her elegant and humble disposition. Delighted as she was in winning the award, she dedicated it to the entire team for it was tough to get a stand out player as the team worked ever so hard to win the title when it looked so unlikely at the halfway mark. That’s Cath for you, a true blue SCC hockey player. This started the most memorable night for SCC Hockey.

The penultimate award of the night was the Section of the Year. Having won three major awards, the Hockey Section and its convenor waited eagerly to find out if this was going to be the year and it was indeed – SCC Hockey Section won Section of the Year! An especial award to cap and recognise an especial year in SCC’s sporting history! Rajaram thanked every single member of the Section for their support and contribution however small and made a special vote of thanks for his fellow Committee Members who volunteered their time on and beyond the normal meetings to make the section a success as it was in 2015. Now the pressure to perform continues this year, but key movements out of the 1st XI Ladies Team has made it tough to keep up with the standards of 2015. The men know that the opponents who have strengthened will be more wary of them but they continue to be in the mix as do the ladies. 2016 has already started off well for SCC Hockey as our U19 Junior Girls won the National Junior League 2 title. The Junior Boys finished third in the boys league. Our 2nd XI Men will be in with a good shout for a National Hockey League 2 title and our Ladies 2nd XI squad are also going through a rebuilding stage following the promotions of their key players to the 1st XI Ladies team to make up for the loss of six starting XI from last season’s title winning side due to pregnancies, relocation, injuries and work related reasons. But as always we will persevere.

Next up, Ken Forbes won the Sports Man of the Year. The player-coach of the First Team was instrumental in getting the 1st XI Men’s heads around into playing a simple but effective SCC brand of hockey. He was omnipresent in our matches and thoroughly deserved the award. The 1st XI Men had gone through the season undefeated claiming 28 from a possible 30 points. This achievement led to SCC Men’s first ever top flight title and now SCC Team of the Year as well. The very proud men strode to the stage and celebrated

Bangkok touring team ready for battle on-court

SCC HAWKS WIN SCC LEAGUE FOLLOWING A NAIL-BITING FINAL MATCH

The netball team also took to Bangkok for the annual Bangkok Southerners Tournament where we emerged second in the Plate final. The best result we’ve seen thus far in this tournament, proving we have a team with lots of potential and promise leading into the National League.

SCC Hawks secured the division one trophy following a great win over Bucks by 11 goals in the final match of the season. A win for Bucks would have seen them secure the trophy. An impressive feat given this season was about building a new team following a number of departures at the end of last year. Special mention to Erin our new shooter and most valued player for the season and Jini who remains our core anchor at C for having a fantastic league. The Eagles put up a good fight in Division 2, but were challenged by some strong competition. We will look to strengthen and build the team moving into the national league which starts at the beginning of June. We hope to be challenging for the title in both Divisions 3, 7 and the mixed. There was a lot of fun in the mixed section of the SCC league this year and welcomed some new male members, who are great new additions. Results were varied!

With half a team of tour virgins, the weekend tour was not short of fun from the moment we stepped into the airport. Sensible heads saw Friday night being quiet so the girls were at their top form for the tournament. The same cannot be said of Saturday where the celebrations kicked off with Prosecco by the pool at 4pm, a fines session during dinner and just absolute carnage on Saturday night. We were not short of sore heads the next day! As usual, the Netball Section welcomes all interested members to join our section and participate in tournaments. Please email sccnetball@gmail.com if you would like to know more!

On the social side – Mads Greenly put on a fun-filled end of SCC league party which saw over 70 netballers take to Stumps. The highlight of course was SCC lifting the trophy, but a good time was had by all enjoying the food and drink. The party got very busy when the Rugby Section joined us from their end of season dinner. Since we last reported we also hosted two teams from MCC as part of the wider SCC match; this has been a highlight of the year so far. Whilst we were thrashed on the court, we took a lot from playing against them and enjoyed the many social activities. We have established some great relationships which will hopefully see us touring to Melbourne in the next couple of years. Tour virgins donning their eye-catching outfits

Victorious Tankards XV after grand final win

Colts U18s squad

SCC Tankards WINNERS (again) The Tankards clashed with Wanderers 2nd XV to defend their title of “best record” in Singapore. The final was played under lights on a Thursday night due to the heavy rain and lighting the Saturday before. Tankards managed to close out a strong Wanderers finish to keep the Cup in the right clubhouse.

the highest level possible in Singapore, Su did not hesitate to take up this role as head coach when approached as he sees this as an opportunity to give back to the Club by helping the younger generation of players.

An end to a glorious season under the command of Field-Marshal Flint which truly saw the best two teams in the Championship go tête-à-tête. The mighty Tankards come away once again with a list of distinctions and medals for gallantry. THE NEXT GENERATION We have seen the might of the Rugby Section over the past season and gearing up to train the next generation. The SCC Rugby Academy was founded in January 2012 by four SCC Members to allow kids to enjoy rugby in an SCC environment and create a pathway for the kids from the age of 3 to 16 (from both Singapore and international schools) to play senior rugby for the Club. Four years on, the Rugby Section is beginning to reap the fruits of their labour especially at the Colts level. The first batch of players have just “graduated“ from the Academy’s U16 team, coached by SCC 1st XV player, Oliver Rey and the team are now training with the SCC Colts U18s squad. Ensuring a steady flow of young players to the men’s squads is essential to the success of the future of the Section and the Club as we continue to be one of the elite sports clubs in Singapore. However, quality beats quantity and that is where the Colts and academy heads, Suhaimi Amran, better known as “Su” and Bryan Lim, come into the picture. Their main role is to develop players at the Academy and the Colts and educate coaches at the academy. Su has been a member of the Club since 2006. He joined as a Junior Sports Member and has gone on to represent the Premiership and Singapore Men’s 15s and 7s team since 2007. With wealth of experience playing at

Bryan has been a Junior Sports Member since he was 15 and went through the Colts programme. Bryan has played for the Lions from 2007-2012 and Tankards from 2013 to represent the championship winning sides. Having been involved with the Academy since 2012, Bryan finds great joy in sharing his love for rugby with younger players and seeing them play in a black and gold jersey. The Academy wants to provide an experience for the children to learn the lessons that rugby has to offer and for players to develop and be able to play for the various grades wearing the SCC Black and Gold, not only from the early age of three years old but be able to continue playing to the esteemed levels of the Lions Tankards, Prems or even the mighty Growlers (some of whom are reputed to be in their 60s and still looking good). Many of the kids in the academy are coached by fathers, current players and SCC Members. This is an important link between the Academy and the SCC and is the very backbone of rugby development in Singapore. There are over 300 boys and girls who turn out to play their rugby every weekend either training or representing the SCC Rugby Academy against the other clubs in Singapore and Asia. It has been great to see the depth of rugby talent growing in Singapore since the Academy started and wonderful to see more Singaporean children training and representing the Academy each weekend. Some of the Academy under 4s tackling one of the coaches

Special thanks must be given to the committee members and especially Sarah Finley who put in a huge amount of time and effort and without which the academy would certainly not exist.

Talented Academy players

SCC NFL vs Hong Kong FC in June’s SCC Soccer Sixes, about which more details will come in the next update.

SCC RIDING HIGH IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE The SCC’s NFL Team was promoted to Division 1 for the 2016 season after a stunning unbeaten 2015 campaign in Division 2. They kicked things off in early April against Katong FC. The first half saw a well-worked move resulting in a cross from the right by Raymond Kwa to find Chang Guo Guang who scored the first goal. Katong equalised in the second half against the run of play but an individually brilliant moment saw Sulaiman Latiff score from a superbly executed free kick, sealing the 2-1 win and the team’s first points. SCC then lost narrowly 1-0 to Eunos Crescent but responded with a fabulous 3-1 win against Siglap FC, a 2-1 win against Police S.A and another win by the same score against Bishan Barx. Currently joint second in the league table, they can also benefit from a game in hand. The PADS have met with some heavyweight fixtures over the past two months, resulting in two losses firstly against a very young St. Patricks and what has become a nail-biting fixture

against the UWC. The latter is a fund-raiser for a fine young man named Luca, son of a UWC teacher, who met with a debilitating accident when very young. The 3-2 loss under floodlights at UWC was a small disappointment, in light of the barbequed sausages and cheque presentation that followed. The squad has also pulled off some thrilling wins in their now iconic ‘black pad’ shirts, keeping three clean sheets in their six games, winning four scoring 20 and conceding 10. The overall record for 2016 is now P18, W11, D3, L4 F61 A30 with Joseph Azran (Yossi) and Sze Boon scoring 19 goals between them. The SCC Tigers beat the British exiles 3-0 before drawing 1-1 with Aioli in early April. A tight game against last year’s champions the Purple Monkeys then saw them lose 2-1. In a quarter final cup game against TGA, the SCC started strongly moving into a 2-0 lead, but TGA came back to 2-2, forcing the game into extra time and finally penalties. Heroically, the Tigers won the shootout 3-2, with some great saves from their keeper. A 3-1 win over the Usual Suspects followed, continuing their sterling form in the league.

SCC VS MCC In 2013 the Section had the good fortune to go alongside the Cricket Section for their tour to Melbourne and were accorded the same reception as the cricketers at the MCG. This was followed by real tennis when we played our match at the Royal Melbourne Tennis Club. The tour continued with some excellent hospitality at both Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and RACV. As we look towards a follow up tour to Melbourne, we welcomed a visit from the MCC and were delighted to host their team of 11 players and supporters. The team was led by Peter Wright, an acknowledged stalwart in Masters Squash, as manager. Due to the points ranking system in Victoria Squash, we were able to match our players pretty closely with theirs and consequently all matches were closely contested as was the final result.

B Grade boys – Rutvik, Jun Yuan, Ming An, Kim Wee, Regan and Zheng Ting (Absent: Kok Wye and Brian)

SCC took an early 2-0 lead but a mid-order collapse caused us to be 2-0 down after six matches and we were still 2-0 down with three matches to go. Fortunately a strong finish enabled SCC to win all three final matches to take the contest 6-5. Presentations were made by both sides and the tourists appear to have thoroughly enjoyed their weekend, which was mainly due to Mahes, who ensured there was no shortage of food and drink for the visitors. I think we can be sure of a return tour to Melbourne in the near future.

TIS’ THE GRAND SLAM SEASON The French Open at Roland Garros recently ended, bringing us to the grass court season, culminating with Wimbledon at the All England Tennis Club. Doesn’t all these tennis activities on TV make you want to hit the courts at SCC? • Every Friday – Social tennis for Section Members • Every last Friday of the Month – Social tennis for section members and Makan Kecil (light bites) thereafter TENNIS TOUR TO HONG KONG Over the May Day weekend, 18 SCC tennis enthusiasts made their way to Hong Kong for a series of tennis friendlies against Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) and Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC).

This tour gave us a great opportunity to test our tennis skills against unfamiliar opponents, and make new friends on and off court. Thank you to Gilbert Ng, our tour manager, Kevin Cumbers, HKCC chief host Debbie See and KCC’s KS Wong and Tim Chen for all their efforts in organizing a great weekend of tennis, fun and friendship. Both clubs have promised to visit SCC in the coming year, so players, start practising! JUNIOR CLINIC 2.0 Back by popular demand, Melissa Pine, from the Club’s ladies team, and also director for the season- ending WTA Finals in Singapore conducted a tennis clinic for the Junior Sports Members at SCC. With the focus on sharpening their doubles game, Melissa and her tennis partner-in-crime Mark, led the girls through a series of doubles drills. Bringing them away from their comfort zone at the baseline, the junior girls were drawn to the net practicing their volleys and smashes. Watching by the sidelines was Natasha, one of our juniors (and social media expert!) who’s recovering from a knee operation. So intensely was she watching the drills, that she almost jumped to her feet and poached a volley at the net. The night ended off with the most intense activity of all – Melissa put the juniors’ shot accuracy to the test by laying out some WTA Finals goodies across the court – hit it, and you win it. This activity certainly brought out a lot of squeals and giggling from the players as they got closer to hitting their target of choice. “It was a fun experience to have been taught by Melissa. We learnt to be aggressive when we volley so that the opponent will have less time to react.” - Nadine Loh, 14

SCC with our KCC hosts

Day 1 of the tennis friendly was at HKCC’s rooftop tennis court, perched atop a hill, so it was a little chilly however the warm welcome from our hosts made everything better. SCC played a series of men’s, women’s and mixed doubles against our hosts, trading volleys, ground strokes and passing shots throughout the afternoon. For all our efforts, we were treated to a sumptuous dinner and had the opportunity to interact further with our hosts. Day 2 of the tennis friendly brought us to Kowloon where we were hosted by the tennis members at KCC. The weather was warmer, giving us a more conducive climate to play through the afternoon and the evening. At dinner, KCC unleashed their ‘secret weapon’ – their very own band, made up of club members, who belted out songs that got us on the dance floor. Wilfred, with his newly-serviced hip showed us some slick moves on the dance floor while King Fook unleashed his inner ‘rocker’ and jammed with the band! 44
