PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE I sincerely thank all Members who were present at the Clubs’ Annual General Meeting on 25 April 2017. I am most humbled to be granted this opportunity to continue the great work by my predecessors and it is with a great sense of responsibility that I serve as President of this historic establishment. This year, we commemorate our 165th anniversary and it gives me great honour to progress the continuity of this grand dame as I proceed in the coming weeks to work closely with my fellow elected General Committee Members in the new term in benefit of our Club and its members. My gratitude goes to Ms Joyce Foster and Mr David Jones for their immeasurable contributions and dedication during their term in office. The SCC Annual Sports Awards, in its 10th anniversary was held in conjunction with the ONE65 party on 8 April 2017. This event was a great example of the Clubs’ dedication to celebrating its vision of a premier sports and social club in the region. SCC will continue to strive in its aim towards achieving excellence and sustainability on all fronts – this is of paramount importance especially amidst a constantly evolving society. We must therefore take active measures to stay relevant while delivering an enhanced membership experience for all. The 23rd edition of the SCC International Hockey 6s was held on 4 and 5 March and it was a huge success. This sporting event witnessed the participation of 64 teams from around the world. I thank the Organising Committee, chaired by Mathavan Devadas, our kind sponsors, the teams that participated and the supporters and volunteers for making it happen. The next tournament, the Soccer 6s, in its 9th year, will be held from 9 to 11 June. So make your way down to the Padang and show your support. The 2017 SCC Night Race is fast approaching. I encourage Members to support this marquee event on the SCC social calendar. Hospitality suites are now open for booking and tickets will be on sale from 25 May. In closing, on behalf of the out-going committee, I like to express my sincere appreciation to my predecessor, Mr Mohan Bhojwani for his outstanding contributions to the Club over the past term. My team and I look ahead to a rewarding term in office as well as your continued patronage of this establishment on the Padang. Let’s forge ahead towards a year of continued unity and camaraderie at SCC.

Annual General Meeting 25 April 2017 The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Singapore Cricket Club was conducted on 25 April 2017 at The Padang Restaurant with 187 eligible voting members in attendance. Chairman Mohan Bhojwani called the meeting to order at 6.30pm. With all businesses of the AGM concluded, the Chairman declared the meeting close at 9.10pm. Congratulations to the Office Bearers who were elected at this years’ AGM.
NOTICE OF RESOLUTION TENDERED PURSUANT TO RULE 61 OF THE RULES OF THE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB RESOLUTION 1 THAT the current Rules 10, 13, 15 and 51 be and are hereby amended in the manner set out in the annexure hereto entitled ‘Proposed Amendments to the Rules’ or in such other manner as this AGM may approve in whole or in parts with or without amendments and the General Committee be empowered to compile the amended Rules as approved by this AGM for submission to the Registrar of Societies for sanction. The Resolution is declared carried by majority.
NOTICE OF RESOLUTION TENDERED PURSUANT TO RULE 57(D) OF THE RULES OF THE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB RESOLUTION 2 The General Body of members resolves and accordingly directs the incoming General Committee and future General Committee (until this resolution is revoked by a general meeting) to implement henceforth that a candidate indicates a single preferred position on the nomination form. An alternative position will not be considered for nomination if a candidate is not elected in the preferred position. The Resolution is declared carried by majority.

It was an evening to remember as the SCC staff, dressed in their snazzy outfits, flocked to The Pan Pacific Singapore eager to waltz back in time to 1852 at the SCC Annual Staff Party. Pre-party activities such as the instant photo booth proved popular once again with many gathering to flash their pearly whites for the photos. This year, all attendees received a limited edition SCC EZ-Link card plus a handy backpack. Deputy President Mr Zoher Motiwalla as well as General Manager Mr Alan Jones addressed the staff thanking all for their commendable efforts in their work throughout the year and encouraged their continued support of the Club’s endeavours.
Performers for the night
This year the Club presented 23 Long Service Awards to staff who have served 5, 10, 20 and 25 years. A special mention goes to our member, Mr Roderick Murchison who generously offered to emcee the party much to the delight of our staff – a wonderful and highly entertaining emcee he was! The international buffet spread which included an assortment of savoury and sweet dishes as well as a halal buffet spread was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Best dressed lady and gentleman - Bianca & Ken
Once appetites were sated, the merriment kicked into full swing with many fun and exciting games including a fun “pop” quiz. All staff had a great evening bonding with their fellow colleagues. 30 lucky draw prizes were presented that night. Chen Zexi Jack from The Oval & Verandah won the highly coveted top lucky draw prize of S$1,688 cash. Congratulations Jack! The 2017 Staff Party came to a resounding close with fond memories made and shared. Top 4 Lucky Draw Winners

Recent Events Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience 24 March 2017
Ripples of laughter bounced off the walls of The Padang Restaurant on 24 March as members and guests surrendered to the rib-tickling, immersive comedy theatre – the world renowned Faulty Towers. The highly entertaining 70’s style three-course meal was packed with some of the best gags which made for a very memorable and unique dining experience.

The Easter party was held at the Gilmour Room on 16 April with the little ones spending a wonderful time with an adorable fluffy bunny mascot while they painted colourful rainbows on eggs and engaged in other fun activities like an egg race, song and dance.

TOP RUGBY TEAMS @ THE PADANG 12 TO 14 APRIL 2017
Singapore was proud to host for the second year running a leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series. The tournament, which was held at the iconic National Stadium was a week after the Hong Kong 7s and most teams were looking to spend time recovering and preparing for a back-to-back tournament. The Singapore Cricket Club was honoured to have the opportunity to host three of the top teams who trained on the iconic Padang in April. South Africa, who had been previous winners of the SCC 7s, were welcome friends together with the national teams of New Zealand and Australia.

The teams also helped to contribute back with coaching clinics held for participants from the SCC Rugby Academy. The Rugby Section hosted a ‘Meet and Greet’ dinner with the New Zealand team and it was a night to be remembered by all. Hosting these teams helped to position the Club as the premier sports and social club in the region, and help foster friendships across the globe. It was a treat for all involved to watch these top teams train at our Padang.

HOCKEY SIXES 4 & 5 MARCH 2017
Article by: Pauline Cassidy Appleyard Photo credits: Benny Kee, The Little Red Eye Pte Ltd After an extraordinarily successful 2016 tournament, the Hockey 6s Organising Committee looked for inspiration to present a different but still enjoyable event for 2017 and they found it in the theme, ‘Lights, Camera, Action’. Once again, the tournament continued to receive overwhelming responses from the region and beyond and a new team from Germany, Grossflottbeker, was a welcome addition to the tournament team list. Another newbie was Hale Hockey Club from Perth. The tournament also welcomed back local teams Barkerites and Jansenites. Our Padang neighbours, SRC, decided to give the tournament a miss this year, but we hope they will return for 2018. Mother Nature decided to be a little uncooperative on Saturday with rain and drizzle affecting all of the morning and most of the afternoon but for some of the overseas teams not used to the heat and humidity of Singapore, it was secretly welcomed! However, the SCC groundsmen did an excellent job preparing the pitches to ensure the grounds held up well and the pitch officials were uber efficient and kept the matches running to time. Through the years, the tournament has grown in stature both for its fun element but also for its competition. In both Men’s and Ladies leagues, it became clear that teams had come with strong players and a winning attitude. In the Men’s competition, Yokoe Japan, Hale Hockey Club, Anzai Japan and Clubhouse Casuals emerged as the teams to watch. In the Ladies competition, it was the Pink Ladies, Tokyo Mix Six, Cairns Sapphires and Jansenites who looked strong. Some teams dazzled in other ways and Applecross and Modernians turned many heads with their kit!

Once again teams obliged with a variety of costumes to compliment the party theme of ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ and enjoyed the opportunity to sashay along the red carpet and pose for photographs in front of the sponsor’s board. But the stars were undoubtedly the band, JIVE TALKIN, who got the party goers on the dance floor very early… and many never left! The Club extended its opening hours to 3am and several partygoers took advantage to dance the night away. Competition got underway a little later on Sunday morning, to give teams a chance to recover from the previous nights’ escapades, yet still many found it difficult to roll out of bed resulting in teams rushing to the Club grounds from all directions before the starting horn for the day, some putting on kit en route! Unlike Saturday, bright sunshine greeted everyone on Sunday morning and some very good hockey followed. All teams had a least one match on Day 2 of the competition after which, the knock-out stages of the tournament started. While we said goodbye, as far as playing matches was concerned, to some teams as they didn’t progress to the knockout stages, the said teams started to fill up the stands to watch the matches and enjoy the Club’s F&B with gusto! In the Men’s and Ladies Cup competitions, the home teams, SCC Oscars and SCC Glamours respectively were emerging as serious contenders. SCC Oscars were in devastating mood when defeating Hollandse Club 6-1 in the semi-finals. Equally the SCC Glamours produced a sparkling performance to beat defending champions Pink Ladies, 2-0. Two Japanese teams, Anzai Japan in the Men and Tokyo Mix Six in the Ladies, made it to the respective finals, making it a Singapore versus Japan double-header.

Two Australian teams, Modernians and High Tea Hockey found their way to the Ladies Bowl finals. High Tea’s progress was remarkable in that they played the whole weekend without a goalkeeper. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Modernians won the shootout.
The Men’s Cup Final was between SCC Oscars and Anzai Japan. SCC took the lead and held it to half time. Anzai equalized just after the break and so to extra time and the golden goal. SCC scored first to make it a memorable double for the hosts.
In the Men’s Bowl Competition, Colombo Hockey and Football Club, last year’s Cup champions found themselves playing Barkerites. It’s very interesting to see the top competition winners from 2016 in the Bowl Final, but that’s hockey as some would say. Barkerites put on a sterling performance but found the Sri Lankans too strong losing to them 1-2.
A word to the Japanese teams – their support for the tournament has grown over the years and this year saw five Men’s and two Ladies teams. And they have shown that they are not just here to have fun, they came to play hockey too.
Two local teams, Jansenites and Tornadoes met in the Ladies Plate final and produced some high scoring entertainment. Jansenites taking the lead 2-0, Tornadoes coming back before Jansenites stole a late winner.

The Men’s Plate final was even more engaging with the Royal Thai Airforce and Melville Marauders from Australia, engaging in a very fast-paced game – the Australians having a larger portion of possession but failing to covert and succumbing to the Thais quite devastating counter-attacking play. RTAF won 3-0. Mother Nature decided to remind us who was the boss and dark grey clouds started to roll in from the southwest of the little red dot. Rain clouds must love watching hockey as it decided to hang around for a while and show their appreciation of the spectacular hockey being played (aka it rained cats and dogs!). But this didn’t rain on our parade… oh no. Next up, the Ladies Cup final which saw two teams who have never won the title – the SCC Glamours and Tokyo Mix Six. The Japanese took a very early lead, but SCC hit back straight away. As the game progressed however SCC took control and scored the winner in the second half to win the title for the first time. JOHN TAYLOR’S SCC BALUT RESUME
• Played a prominent role in all aspects of Balut development both in the S.E. Asia region and the SCC for over 40 years.
• One of the original authors of the STC (Singapore Town Club) Balut rules which govern how this game is played.
• Held every key position within the SCC Balut Section on numerous occasions: Convenor, Secretary, Treasurer.
• Managed SCC’s participation in many competitions in Singapore, as well as in the League and the region.
• Organised and led the SCC on many successful overseas tours. John Taylor receives the Balut ‘Spirit of Sport’ Award from GC Member David Jones
• Developed unrivalled contacts within all Balut playing clubs in Singapore and the region.
In short, John Taylor is SCC’s veritable “Mr. Balut”.
IN-HOUSE BALUT EVENTS We held two In-house events in February. The first was on Saturday 11 February attended by 27 Baluteers. Renee Balagopal amassed a huge total of 691 points. Trailing in her wake was Cheryl Bailey and Raj Kumar with 664 and 639 points respectively. The second event, with 31 participants, was held on Tuesday 21 February. This occasion was graced with the presence of the veteran perpetrator of Balut mythology and mysticism, Guru Chris Bonnichsen. Mogens Andersen took the honours with a grand total of 620 points, followed by Geoff Mullet and Gursharan Kaur who achieved respectable totals of 607 and 604 points each respectively. Ever the quiet gentleman, Anwar Gaffoor performed the Atlas-like task of carrying all on his shoulders with highly supportive totals of 480 and 471 points!

The event on 21 March was another highly social gathering with 29 attendees, including Phil Alexander, former Chairman of the Bangkok British Club and current Balut Convenor (actually they are ‘posh’ up there and the position of President is called ‘Chairman’). With the casual ease of a seasoned practitioner, Phil effortlessly scooped the pool with 659 points. Gasping in admiration in second and third positions were Mohan Dadlani and Susheela Balagopal with 643 and 639 points each. As if succumbing to the need for redemption, Anwar worked assiduously with SCC Senior Sous Chef, Vik to produce a new and delicious Balut makan menu that generated very positive feedback.

A sea of red
OPENING CARNIVAL 2017 18 February was the date where we saw 36 bowlers, both novice and experienced deck the green in red and pink for the season’s opening carnival. The weather was beautiful that day and after two rounds of hard fought matches, the team of Zoher, Helen and Jenny emerged overall winners and took home a bottle of wine each. The afternoon was rounded off by some good ‘makan kecil’ and a song from Captain Melvin.
NATIONAL SINGLES 2017 In the first National tournament of the year, a total of 21 men and 12 women took part in the respective Men’s and Women’s competitions. Christian, Edmund, Ganesh, Hui Kai, Melvin, Amira, Josephine, Shermeen and Virginia represented SCC in the tournament. The Men were placed in four groups. Among the lot, Edmund, Christian and Melvin progressed into the quarter-finals. Melvin lost to Zoher after starting off well, while Edmund gave eventual winner Thomas a hard fight before being just edged out. Christian meanwhile came back from a 12-19 deficit to defeat Chia TC of Greende Bowling Club 21-19 to progress to the semi-final. Christian lost his semi-final game after a hard fight and was awarded a joint bronze medal.

The women meanwhile were placed in four groups with three players each. From this lot, Shermeen progressed directly to the semi-final but lost her closely fought game to eventual winner May Lee. In the bronze medal match, Shermeen took her frustrations out on Margaret and beat her 21-6 to add to Christian’s earlier effort. Congratulations to all our players who made the best effort and commitment and thank you to all the supporters who turned up over the four weeks to cheer our players.
MELVIN AT THE WORLD CUP For the second year running, an SCC bowler represented Singapore at the World Indoor Cup Singles in Warilla, Australia. Melvin won the National Singles League in 2016 and qualified for this prestigious event held in March with 25 other countries. He finished 10th in his group with three wins and nine losses. A PROMISING START The section has been making steady progress over the past year with most of the Monday sessions having excellent attendance. A promising start has been made in 2017 with members participating and hosting an array of games. The Bridge Section celebrated Chinese New Year with a very well-attended dinner-cum-game on 6 February. There were nine playing tables in the Gilmour room. Prize winners for the night were as follows: Best North South Pair Chris Wong and Beng Tee Haythornthwaite Best East West Pair Usha Perry and Perumal Ramanathan Pair closest to 45% score Cheong Seng Lee and Sandra Iyer Pair closest to 35% score Susan and Michael Milford, Esther DeSilva and Olivia Jacob (two pairs) Beng Tee Haythorntwaite also received her Best Player of 2016 award at this event as she was unable to attend the Section’s Christmas-cum-Awards Night last December. Subsequently, the section invited nine pairs from the Tanglin Club Bridge Section to a friendly game on 23 February. Dinner was also provided and it was a great success, strengthening good will and camaraderie. Eight members also took part in the second game of the friendly Quadrangle Bridge on 5 March (the other three clubs being

Singapore Recreation Club, Keppel and Kembangan). The section will host the event on Sunday 16 July. The Premier Bridge League (PBL) which began on 12 March will span over three months. The PBL comprises eight clubs: Singapore Cricket Club (SCC), Singapore Recreation Club (SRC), Singapore Island Country Club (SICC), Keppel Club, National University Students Society (NUSS), Chinese Swimming Club (CSC), Tanglin Club (TC) and Geylang West Bridge Club. Each club will host one game and SCC hosted on 23 April. All games are generally played on Sundays. At the point of writing, the next game will be held and hosted by Geylang West on 26 March where four section members have volunteered to participate. Last, but not least, the members are venturing to play outside of Singapore as well. Six members will be participating in the Annual Bridge Congress in Kuching, Sarawak from 28 April to 1 May. This augurs well for the Club and more such visits to other places in the region could be in the pipeline. The section would also like to draw more members to the Club. As such training continues to be its focus. The Bridge Beginners’ Course consisting of four sessions began on Saturday 4 March. An encouraging 22 participants signed up for the course, the largest number so far. This has encouraged two SCC member participants to join the section immediately. This will hopefully lead to a steady increase in membership of the section with more such training being planned. It is only befitting that the section has been mentioned in the President’s message in the last issue of the Padang. We are indeed a growing section and may soon find the Victoria Room too small for our Monday sessions.

GOLF ACTIVITIES To celebrate the Lunar New Year, the section had its Ang Pow Golf Game on 8 February at the SICC, Old Course, followed by an eight-course Chinese dinner at the club’s Silk Restaurant. Some 50 members took part in both the events. It was through the invitation of The British Club that we had the inaugural SCC-TBC golf match on 10 March at the Keppel Golf Club. Each club fielded 12 players for the competitive match, though we had another two flights taking part in our social game. The match ended, rightfully, even, and we got to share the championship trophy donated by TBC. Both captains pledged to turn this inaugural match into an annual inter-club event. 13 members of the section embarked on a 3-game mini golf tour to Pattaya, Thailand. Two of the games were played at the highly-rated Siam Country Club, on the Plantation and the Old Course. The latter had just hosted an LPGA event only a few weeks earlier and the greens and fairways were in immaculate conditions. The tour ended with a couple of nights’ stay in Bangkok.

The section looks forward to welcoming a contingent from Royal Selangor Club on 21 April for the annual inter-port match. The game will be held at the Seletar Country Club and dinner at the Gilmour Room, where we will conjunctly hold a Social Night event for all our section members who are not able to make it for the golf game. This will be followed shortly on 5 May by the visit of Kluang Country Club for another interport match at NSRCC. For this event we will be hosting them to a dinner at the rustic D’Kranji Resort, as the journey back to the Club is too long to make it feasible. Some of the Pattaya participants are looking forward to another jaunt overseas, this time to the neighbouring Batam Island over the 12-14 May weekend. This social golf trip may be held with other sections, should they be interested in joining us. The other sections will also be invited to the Intersection Golf Game which we will be holding on 20 June. Though the date is firm, we are still negotiating with a few possible venues for the golf game and the dinner thereafter.

SCC U19 Boys capture first Junior Boys title in a decade
SCC HOCKEY CROWS INTO THE YEAR OF THE ROOSTER SEASON SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT The Year of the Rooster has started prosperously for SCC Hockey as our U19 Junior boys secured the National Junior League 3 title following an unbeaten run. It would have been a season of 100% wins barring the final game where the title was already secured and the boys couldn’t find the drive to deliver another win and drew 1-1 with Crescent-Millennia. Nonetheless this is the first Junior Boy title the Club has won since 2006 where we were U-21 champions three years on the trot.
MEN AND WOMEN GUNNING FOR NATIONAL TITLE With the end of the junior season the attention now shifts to the new National League campaign. The Women’s 1st XI are on a mission to claim the league title this year from SRC who have seen an exodus of players. Jansenites have yet again assembled a young squad and are ever prepared for the future. The much improved Crescent and disciplined Tornados are also outside bets for the title this season. However SCC remains firm favourites to get past the post first. With no less than six new players either re-joining or joining the squad the ladies team look the part of champions. They have been doing their part on the pitch too with winning all three of their matches to date and sitting pretty atop the league. A 12-game season is too short for any hiccups and the ladies are wary of the threats posed by their rivals and have been training hard to maintain a good level of onpitch discipline to stay true to their game plan. The Men are also in the same place as the Women as they too are making a serious assault on the title they last won in 2015. With the exodus from SRC also affecting the men, the NHL 1 title is up for grabs and Jansenites, Tornados, ORA and Khalsa are all in the mix to capture the prized crown. The Padang Men however have started remarkably well winning three and drawing one of their opening four matches. Although they trail Jansenites by three points they have two games in hand over them. Win them both and SCC will sit three points clear at the top. A 14-game season

squeezed into three and a half months is gruelling but the Men are training hard and managing family, work and this title push really well.
MARKED IMPROVEMENT FROM 2ND XI MEN AND LADIES The 2nd Ladies and Men have had mixed results but the investment in young players in ensuring that the matches are well attended. The Ladies have won their last two matches after losing their opening two games. The fact that they have managed backto-back clean sheets is testament to their markedly improved work rate and technical ability. The squad is training ever so hard and an upturn in result which may deliver a hard fought medal in NWL2 is well and truly on the horizon. The Men have a chance to finish amongst the medallist with some results going their way and probably may end up on the higher side of mid-table as a consolation. However the foundations have been laid for their squad to be competing for the gold in NHL2 in the near future.
JUNIOR BOYS PROGRAMME BEARING FRUIT Meanwhile our U17 Junior Boys are sweeping all comers in the Youth Liga after winning all five of their opening games. They have five more matches to play and three more wins to secure the title. The success of this team alongside that of the U19 boys only bodes well for the future of SCC hockey.
COB WEBS GETTING CLEARED IN PRESEASON LIGA Finally, our 3rd and 4th XI Men are getting into gear for their new season in July in the Social Liga. This pre-season tournament has become a staple fare for these Men over the years and we have been able to see many players enjoy the tough games. They lie in mid-table.
MONTHLY SOCIAL WITH GUESTS On 14 April (Good Friday) the Hockey Section hosted two touring colleges from Australia, regulars, Mazenod College and Guildford Grammar School. We played a round robin friendly competition with these teams as part of the section’s monthly social at the Padang with record numbers attending the event which the rain threaten to thwart. As we approach the first quarter of the year, the Netball Section has got some fantastic news to share. This year, we see more JSMs joining us – fresh new faces and some great new players.
SCC NETBALL LEAGUE Once again, we kicked off the season on an exciting note with our annual SCC Netball League. Special mention to Nanthini who put in so much effort in arranging this League for all of us! We are in the midst of the SCC Netball League and both our teams, Hawks and Eagles have produced pretty fantastic results thus far considering we have had slight changes to the usual line-ups. The new additions to our teams this season proved us to be versatile players on court. There has been a display of strong team spirit as we try out new combinations and various positions for the very first time. Our current standing for the Hawks with a strong second position finish while Eagles maintain a solid third in the first round.
BKK VISITING TEAM We had a visiting team from Bangkok which flew down to Singapore on the 25 March and had arranged a day of friendly matches with the team as well as invited some of the outside teams to join us in a whole day of netball fun. Other participating teams include Bucks, NZCC, Vikings, Euonia JC, Sports Ready. SCC sent in a strong team comprising a mixture of players from both Hawks and Eagles and had won all the matches in our draw. Despite the heavy downpour midway through the games

which resulted in the day being cut short, our ladies surely had an enjoyable afternoon hosting the Bangkok Team. A big shout out to Gen as well for organising this friendly with the Bangkok Team. Thanks, Gen!
BEACH NETBALL Happening on the same weekend was the Missions Beach Netball held at Siloso Beach, Sentosa. Last year, our ladies achieved terrific results and came in second in the women’s open. This year was of no exception. It was a fun-filled day of beach netball playing under the sweltering heat and our team put up a very strong fight against various renowned strong opposing teams. Great teamwork displayed throughout and kudos to our ladies who never gave up midway playing under the merciless sun! Looking back, we have had a stellar year in 2016. This year, we are definitely hoping to maintain and achieve greater results. We are looking at more exciting events in store for us in the second half of the year. Our next Bangkok Tour is coming up really soon in June. Best of luck to our team of ladies going on this tour. As always, we are constantly on the lookout for new members aged 13 and above. Tankards 2017
TANKARDS WIN IN STYLE The Tankards followed through and added to their Championship title by winning the grand final versus Oldham and are crowned 2017 Champions. The grand final was a gruelling encounter and despite the tankards scoring two tries, Oldham came back with four successful penalty kicks, leaving the score at full time at 12-12. Going into extra time the tankards were successful with a penalty kick and the final score was 15-12 to the SCC and the Tankards were crowned Champions again in 2017. Big congratulations to Shane Dewer and his team who have done the SCC proud.
GROWLERS – THRILLA IN MANILA The Growlers travelled to Manila in March to defend the tournament winning performance in 2016 at the International Manila 10s. A new venue for the tournament this year saw the event hosted at the Manila Jockey Club rather than the traditional Nomad’s sportsground. A number of Growlers flew in from the far corners of the planet to make the squad, including players from the USA, UK, Australia and Singapore. The final was a rematch against the Fijian Golden Oldies (with three former internationals in their side) with the SCC Growlers proved ultimate victors and tournament Champions for 2017. The team was captained by Oli Hall and managed by Marcus Parry. Whilst this was a great result for the SCC Growlers, a major part of the tour was the ongoing support the Growlers provide to the Cararoo Foundation in Manila. The Cararoo Foundation directly supports over 100 less fortunate children with education and social support. Many of the children who are recipients of the foundation came to the tournament to cheer on the SCC and in turn received a shipment of ‘hand-me-down’ clothes, toys, gifts

In 2017, Straightened Times seemed to afflict the Straits of Malacca with the result that it was a small but perfectly formed eight strong SCC touring party, longer on experience and possibly girth, and one blazer short of the set, that made the trip, dreading the prospect of too much squash!

Kristen’s enthusiasm hit the highway on a silver black phantom bike all the way from Australia was exemplary, Reuben Tay took most of it in, Richard Hill improperly attired, Kok Tsung-Hao kept his head down when it mattered and Palmer’s ‘bouncing’ enthusiasm was painfully infectious. The Jotter is of course beyond reproach and comment.
SCC won by 25-20 on the three game format (or nine matches to six). Their top three players were strong and the matches were good, but we were a little too strong for their lower order. We managed to get six lady players whilst they came with four, so their top two players had to play twice.
Both SCC matches for Saturday, Calcutta having lost comfortably to Madras Friday afternoon. First up was Calcutta and a singles line-up of Richard, Reuben, Tsung-Hao and Kristen proved too strong for the Calcutta four taking SCC to an unassailable 4-0 lead, before the doubles; the tie was finally won 5-2 with Tsung-Hao and Reuben winning a great doubles match 15-9, 13-15, 15-9. SCC contesting for the title in the afternoon versus MCC? Indeed! Richard won easily in the opening singles and Reuben

Early January we hosted a team of youngsters from Hong Kong – a combined Hong Kong Poly/Uni team who were on tour to Singapore. There were 15 matches, so a lot of squash was played!
We exchanged a SCC plaque that with HK Poly/Uni for their pennant. Mahes kindly organised the F&B and Eleanor and Nicole took the photos. All in all a good evening of Squash and they were a good bunch.
NATIONAL SQUASH LEAGUES By the time you read this our league season will have started for most teams. This year we have entered 10 teams, including two men’s A Grade teams. Unfortunately there were not enough teams to have a Ladies Division 1 competition, so all our A, B and C grade Ladies have had to play in the Men’s competition. The Men’s A grade will be playing their matches at Kallang Squash Centre and the playing nights for each team are as follows: • • • • •

TENNIS EACH DAY, KEEPS THE DOCTORS AWAY INTERCLUB SINGLES LEAGUE (MARCH/APRIL) Recently, the Men’s A, B and C team, along with two Ladies/Girls’ teams participated in the yearly interclub singles league.

Inspired by Roger’s Renaissance at the Australian Open, which also continued at the subsequent Miami Masters and Indian Wells tournaments, our male and female teams took on several clubs in Singapore in the league tournament. Each match against a club consists of three singles matches.
All the men’s teams, led by Captains Soenke Langhoff, Vishal Vijay and Clement Leow, boosted by an injection of new players recently, encountered tough challenges in the league games but fought hard and made each match count. In 2016, both the ladies and juniors B team and the ladies A team won the singles titles in their respective categories. As a result, the B team was promoted to the A league, as per the rules. This meant that SCC had two teams competing in the Ladies’ A category. While the draw was small, the matches were of a high level giving the ladies and junior girls a lot of match practice. The final ‘showdown’ took place at SCC where the two teams – the Ladies’ A and mainly Juniors’ A played each other. Youth vs Experience! The sight of two ‘opposing’ teams wearing the SCC crest caused some confusion amongst some of the spectators and passers-by, prompting an observant Cricket Section passer-by to ask “Who should I support? The team in shorts or dresses?”
SCC’S 10TH SPORTS AWARDS This event was held in conjunction with the ONE65 party at the club. The tennis section would like to congratulate Kevin Cumbers who was awarded the Spirit of the Sport award for Tennis. Kevin Cumbers was the previous Convenor and dedicated a lot of time to seeing the refurbishment of the courts to the current astroturf surface. Congratulations Kevin!

Social tennis with Serangoon Gardens Country Club: On 12 May (Friday), the tennis section will be hosting an evening of social tennis with the Serangoon Gardens Country Club.
