PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, We are into the third month of the year and we are pleased to report that the Club continues to be busy albeit within the social distancing and safe management protocols in place. While life now has to abide by new standards, it is at least a normality of sorts that we are getting used to. The F&B outlets continue to be well patronised by our Members and their guests. The Padang Restaurant has been brimming to full capacity for both lunches and dinners and we continue to receive very generous compliments for the Padang dining experience. Our Sports Sections are actively working with their respective sport associations and the Club to ensure many training sessions and activities can restart. It looks like it may be a little time yet before national leagues and other competitions will be able to resume. Additionally, their efforts in youth development and mentorship of Junior Sports Members are progressing – find out more about some of the programs in our feature articles. Starting from this issue, we will also be featuring news articles from our Club youth academies so do make sure you check them out. The Cricket Section have recently installed the BatFast state-of-the-art bowling simulator which allows one to program an international cricketer to bowl to you and the batsman can set the spin, swing, speed and even choose a pitch to recreate match-like situations. Currently, it is being tested out by the Cricket Section. However, in

time we expect to open it up to the larger membership and it may present an interesting option for a private or corporate event. Meanwhile, our new interest groups – the SCC Book Club and Running & Brisk Walking Club – have gotten off to an enthusiastic start with many Members participating. With the feedback we have received, we’re also starting a new Cycling Club – do see page 28 for registration information. Encouraged by the great turn-out for the SCC Beach Clean-Up activity, the Member Engagement Committee will be organising a community outreach activity with Willing Hearts. More information is available on the previous page. Social Club events are still continuing, albeit virtually – our regular Quiz Nights and the now-popular Escape Room events are well-attended, so make sure you join us! We also have special F&B promotions and events planned for you – Hawker Nights are back, with new dishes to excite your senses. Don’t forget to make your reservations for St Patrick’s, Administrative Week, and Easter Day! In these times, please take extra care of your health, stay fit, and do exercise social responsibility. I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

SCC Member Monica Alsagoff shares her Club Memories: Life is all about creating memories and I love the Singapore Cricket Club’s (SCC) tag line: “Creating memories since 1852”. This Club holds countless stories and fabulous memories for me. My father in law was one of earlier members of the Singapore Cricket Club and if he was still around today, I’m sure he would regale us with his wonderful stories of the good old days. There are big memories that we cherish and there are little memories that stick out. Well, the latter are just “magic”! Serendipity? Can’t engineer that as they just “happen”. I’ve been creating big and little memories at the SCC since 1988 but my first these memories are the ones that I will cherish for a lifetime: I watched whisky cricket match and a Rugby 7s game at the Padang, I ordered my first friends, at the club, I learnt how to play Balut at the club, afternoon teas with to bar Sunday dinners at The Oval Veranda with my family. I even learnt pagne dive at the original Men’s Bar on many a New Year’s Eve & sipped Cham at the first as I watched Lewis Hamilton & Fernando Alonso race neck to neck ss. ever SGP Formula 1 Night Race from the club’s rooftop terrace! Pricele

SCC The club way to socialise and interact with friends, family and colleagues. and the staff are warm, kind and friendly; the bartenders know my tipple dine in a club members are fun loving and affable lot. Being able to wine and is such a beautiful heritage building in one of the premier Sports Clubs in Asia that they privilege and a blessing. IN CONVERSATION WITH

SUSAN MILFORD To provide our Members with a wider range of activities and opportunities to engage with one another, the Club recently launched the SCC Book Club. Susan Milford, who helped kickstart this initiative, explains to The Padang what this is all about. What is a book club and what does a typical session entail? A Book Club is a gathering of people who usually meet once a month or once every two months. The group agrees to read a particular book and gathers to discuss it in a social context. Meetings can take place virtually, in people’s houses or elsewhere including the SCC. Gatherings generally last 90 minutes. To get the discussion going, there will be some talking points prepared beforehand. It is important that Members read the book before the meeting and enjoy listening to differing opinions as well as volunteering their own. The SCC Book Club has just under 50 active Members at present. More are welcome! To accommodate Member preference around timing of meetings and genre, several Reading Groups have been set up. We are aiming for each group to have a maximum of eight Members to comply with current COVID-19 restrictions. As new Members join, we anticipate setting up additional Reading Groups. We also have a virtual reading group hosted by the SCC via Zoom on a Thursday evening. At the end of the meeting, each Reading Group can provide feedback about the book discussed to Cassie Wong (Head of Events, Sponsorship & Member Relations) via a short questionnaire. Over time, this feedback will be a helpful resource to other groups when they consider their next book choice. Towards the end of the meeting, Members confirm the date, location and time of the next meeting and the next book that they are going to read.

Why should Members join a book club instead of doing their own sole reading? Reading for one’s own pleasure is always great, but it is fun and illuminating to share one’s views and listen to others. Reading Groups are also a fantastic way to meet new people and read books that one might not otherwise encounter. The Reading Groups are social gatherings, not academic events, but one invariably comes away more informed as well as having had a good time.

What type of books will be read and how will they be chosen? Initially I created a list of books which was representative of the genres selected by Members. It is from this list that the initial books have been selected. Each Reading Group is free to select future books from that list or choose another title. Just let Cassie know so that we can make a note in case other groups ask us for suggestions.

THE PADANG MAR / APR 2021

What is your all-time favourite book? It is impossible to pick just one. For sheer impact and writing excellence. Pincher Martin by William Golding. However, I have read LOTR (Lord of the Rings) more than once!

Favourite author(s)? Depends upon my mood. I enjoy reading Haruki Murakami, John Le Carré, Patrick O’Brian, Terry Pratchett and many others! I also enjoy reading books concerning people, business and history (in its broadest sense). I recently read a book relating how Joseph Lister brought a more enlightened approach to cleanliness to surgery. I have also just finished Janet Lim’s partial autobiography.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge – because a challenged world is an alert world, and it is from challenge that change comes. Is there a book that embodies the theme which you would recommend? I refer you to Janet Lim’s story. She encountered horrendous challenges in childhood and as a young adult during the Second World War. In the main she was a resilient person whose personality, whilst no doubt affected, did not seem to be damaged by bitterness after the trials and tribulations endured. An inspiring woman who did much good after the war, Janet was the first female Singaporean author to be published in English.

Is there anything else you might like to say to the SCC Family? Join Us! Contact Cassie and let her know your availability and reading interests.

S CC SQUASH:

MENTORING OUR FUTURE The Singapore Cricket Club’s Squash Section has a long history of coaching and mentoring young budding players who join the Club as teens and mature into strong players who represent Club in the National League and play for Singapore. We speak to some of our Squash Members mentors and JSMs to find out why the Squash Section places such value on mentorship

COACH ALLAN CHANG What made you decide to spend the time to work with and guide our JSMs? It is all about passion and the love of the game. I felt this was the best way for me to give back to the game.

What are the qualities that define a good sportsperson? Good behaviour, discipline, passion and always have a listening ear. How did your own growth journey influence your decision to mentor our young JSMs? It started a long way back when I started coaching in RI (1999). Not only coaching but also monitoring their discipline and adding good values.

What are your hopes for the future of SCC Squash? I certainly hope that SCC Squash can go back to the good old days during the 90s when we used to stay back till 12am (crazy) after a long evening of squash but that’s the way we were.

If there is one thing that you hope our JSMs lean from their time growing up in SCC, what would it be? Socialising and to learn how to achieve their highest level of play. SCC has a wide variety of players across different age groups and it gives our players a good exposure to different playing styles.

What do you think is the best way to teach skills? Coaches have to be more patient. Each player is different; some are fast learners, some are slow, some have potential and some are hard working. It is up to the coach to identify the right skill and work towards improving them.

Standing, from left to right: Udai Singh, Timothy Leong, Kah Wah Cheong, Edward Lee and partner, Coach Allan Chang, Nigel Koh, James Zhang (former JSM), Vivian Rhamanan. Sitting: Wai Keng Koh

What is it important for SCC to have Junior Sports Members and Youth development / mentorship programs? SCC is the premier club for squash in Singapore. Our investment into the JSMs will ensure that the rich tradition and achievements by past Members will continue into the future.

YAP KIM WEE When did you join as a JSM and what made you choose SCC? 13 years ago I got selected during a 2-week sports & psychomotor trial at Raffles Institution. I did not know what squash was prior to that but Coach Allan was the one who encouraged me to take up Squash. One thing led to another and I was fortunate to be selected for the SCC JSM program.

What was your experience as a JSM? I was training under Coach Allan every weekend at SCC. It was almost like a carnival and till today those fond memories keep me going. I came in contact with so many different people and even the adults (as they were then to me) were so friendly and took time to share experiences and provide guidance.

Any tips for future JSMs? It is a great place to unwind and an excellent venue to meet clients and colleagues. Beer is best of breed and you will always have a good time with your friends, family or partner.

MANMINDAR SINGH When did you yourself start in SCC Squash and how would you rate your association with the Club? I joined SCC in 1998 and became squash captain in 1999. With the exception of one 3-year stint as convenor and a year or so as vice-captain, I remained as captain till about 2017. I was fortunate to have been part of the journey when we actively embarked on the junior program in the early 2000s with then convenors Andrea Nicholas and Ashley Gunning and it is a journey that we have continued to this day. With the facilities that SCC had to offer and the presence of a number of national senior players already representing the Club, we were able to attract a constant stream of good young players. The Club’s coaches such as Allan Chang, Joannah Yue and Vivian Rhamanan were also instrumental in helping to bring into the Club up and coming young players.

Secondly, the need to play the game fairly. You need to beat the opponent strictly on your own merit. We have on quite a few occasions called up and spoken to junior players who we felt did not play the game in the right spirit. This includes taking a mickey out of a weaker opponent. You beat a weaker opponent but you do not embarrass him in the process. I always feel that the only thing worse than a bad loser is a bad winner. Play the game fairly and treat your opponent with respect. As with the other senior Members, I have tried to impart these values to our JSMs. Thirdly is the need to strive to always improve yourself. The result of this is not necessarily in the number of titles you win but the effort that you put in to ensure that you are playing to your optimum level.

What are your hopes for the future of SCC Squash?

The JSM program is an important part of the continued success of the sporting and social life of the Club; it’s a tremendous opportunity for the Club to play a role in developing and mentoring a group of young people. Our juniors generally join the Club when From the outset, our aim was not only to develop the JSMs to they are around 13 years old. They are at an age where they are become players at the highest level possible but also to be wellopen to taking on board the sporting and social etiquette and rounded people. In terms of developing their playing values imparted by the senior Members. They ability, we assisted the JSMs with coaching, funded “The JSM program is will grow up with these values and hopefully their participation in all the local age-group and an important part of these same values will have a positive bearing national tournaments and ensured that they played on their adult lives. SCC has in place a great the continued regularly in the annual squash league. JSMs also junior program and I would hope that the Club benefitted from playing with senior players on club success of the continues to support the program. nights. Senior players were also present during the sporting and social Why is it important for SCC to have league games to guide the JSMs.

What made you decide to spend the time to work with and guide our JSMs?

Apart from their sporting development, we also emphasized the need for the JSMs to be socially active. This meant their participation in the Section’s activities such as overseas tours and the Section’s social events. JSMs were required to socialize after matches rather than just pack up and leave. The latter is a natural tendency of many of the young players here.

life of the Club; it’s a tremendous opportunity for the Club to play a role in developing and mentoring a group of young people.”

We also handed responsibility to the JSMs when we made them captains of the various league teams. I know of no other Club that has a junior as a captain of a league team. We even at one point had 2 JSMs, Preshin and Bryan Koh, captaining our Premier Grade teams. Kim Wee was vice-captain of the B team under me for a few years and then oversaw a successful stint as captain.

What to you are the qualities that define a good sportsperson? There are number of qualities that make a good sportsperson. One is the ability to consistently perform at the level expected of the person. There can be good days and bad days but a good sportsperson will deliver regardless as he knows how to adapt his game to the conditions.

Junior Sports Members and youth development/ mentorship programs?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the juniors. It gives me great pleasure when I see our juniors conducting themselves admirably both on and off the squash court. And I have to say that by and large our JSMs do conduct themselves well even in difficult situations at times. The key to working with the JSMs is the need win over their trust. Whilst they may listen to an authority figure like the captain or convenor, they will only truly respond positively to you if you are consistent with your words and actions and are ready to put in the necessary time to support them. Over the years, SCC squash has won countless league and individual national honors. Our JSMs have without doubt been a key part of these successes. The Section can even boast of a handful of international honors as many of our JSMs went on to represent Singapore. I hope that as a Section we continue our proud tradition of developing JSMs to the best of their sporting ability and at the same time nurturing them to be good members of society.

UDAI SINGH What are the qualities that define a good sportsperson? Discipline and passion are key qualities. A good sportsperson must also have a desire to win, that creates the fire in the belly. When I say discipline, it’s not only about training hard but equally important are eating right and getting ample rest for recovery so one can withstand the demands of the sport over a long period.

How did your own growth journey influence your thoughts about the importance of mentoring young JSMs? While growing up in India, I went to a boarding school where I picked up the game and whilst we had teachers who played squash, we never had a dedicated squash coach or any structured training programs. I learnt the game from my seniors in school who taught us how to train and passed on tips and “coached” us during the interschool tournaments. This left an indelible mark and I believe being a good mentor is one of the best gifts you can give to someone.

If there is one thing that you hope our JSMs learn from their time growing up in SCC, what would it be? Participate in the various leagues, competitions and overseas tours that SCC organizes. While social squash is great, it doesn’t necessarily prepare you for the pressure and mental toughness that match play brings. And always remember having that 100 plus (or a beer once you are of age) with the group after the game is a great way to bond and build relationships with fellow Members.

Why is it important for SCC to have Junior Sports Members and Youth Development / mentorship programs? As I mentioned earlier, a lot of the current and former national players have been part of SCC from a young age and they have a lot to offer the youngsters who join. A robust JSM program ensures that this tradition continues and SCC continues to groom players to represent Singapore and remains the premier club in Singapore for Squash.

What are your hopes for the future of SCC Squash? Many current and former national champions / players are Members of SCC. Quite a few of them learnt their skills at SCC and I believe that leads many talented young players wanting to join and represent us in the National League. I hope we continue that tradition of grooming and producing talent who feed in to the national system and go on to represent the country and make us all proud.

From left: Udai and Kah Wah; Coach Vivian and Udai

TIMOTHY SOH When did you join as a JSM and what made you choose SCC? I joined SCC at the age of 16. I chose the Club because the level of squash is extremely high and a lot of the current and former national players are our Members. This made joining the club an easy decision especially if you really want to play the sport competitively.

What was your experience as a JSM? The level of support has been amazing. I have been on four SCC squash tours that were heavily subsidized and the Club sponsors the entry fees for most of the local tournaments. Moreover, hanging out with many of the Club Members has been a lot of fun.

Any tips for future JSMs? Definitely go for the overseas squash trips, and hang out as much as you can with the Club Members. You really don’t have to be shy as the Members are all extremely inclusive. The best memories of these tours are the morning after, waking up with absolutely no memory except that you’re on an SCC overseas squash trip.

RUGBY:

ACADEMY GRADUATION INTO THE SCC COLTS As the season ended last December, it was farewell to many of the SCC Rugby Academy’s U17s. January 2021 marked nine years since the SCC’s iconic black and gold rugby shirt was worn by juniors for the very first time. Set up by a handful of players from the adult section who wanted to pass on their love for the game to their children, the SCC Rugby Academy was born. From a handful of kids the Academy now has more than 600 Touch and Rugby players. Over the last couple of years, the Academy has seen many a young boy and girl run on the pitch and leave several years later as accomplished men and women players. Among them is Josh Le Grice who last December completed his junior rugby career with the Academy and moved onto SCC Colts, which officially comes under the banner of the SCC Rugby Section.

Josh is now 17 and joined the Academy aged 9 in 2011. How much does he remember of the early days? “I think I was probably brought up to play rugby and, if I remember correctly, the very first time I went down to train I was wearing an England rugby shirt. I also remember my very first tour to KL; in those days it was the Saracens 10s which took place on this massive polo field. I remember staying in the hotel and it was a great experience. I now play back row, in shirt number 6 or 7. When I started I was playing number 10 or 12, but over the years as I have grown, I’ve gotten more into a specific position, with more of a hands on the ball position. I have definitely improved a lot and I play at a much higher level now. I feel it’s been a good progression and I have definitely improved as a player over the years. My position is a defensive position, I need to tackle well, lead the defence, carry the ball well, take part in line outs and the scrum – be good at everything really. Some players who came at the very beginning or a year after I joined are still at the Academy too and it’s really good to have some faces who have been there since the start and some new people too. The U17s are probably a 50/50 mix of locals and expats and I’ve made new friends over the years and got to know the local players who have joined too.

What’s next?

Josh Le Grice (as seen on the right above at the SCC Academy 7s, a few years ago!)

There’s a great progression into the Men’s Section of SCC so that’s where I’m going after I leave the Academy. I had already started training with the Men’s group, going down to the SCC twice a week and training there. It’s been really good to get to know them and see what happens after the Academy. This is my last academic year of school and hopefully I’ll go to university and I really want to play there. My dad (Rob) has been a head coach for 4 or 5 years. It’s been good and we have struck a good balance, he hasn’t tried to get too involved with what I’m doing and he has let other coaches sort me out while he has got on with the other players. There’s definitely been no favouritism!

Best moments? One of the best tries I’ve scored was at the SCC 7s. I scored in the final of our age group’s competition in November 2019 and that was such a great experience. It was down on the Padang – it was great to run out on the Padang and I remember hearing the crowd. It was a really good feeling. I’ll also always remember around three years ago when I was picked to play up year in the (then) U16 team, and we went on tour to KL, that was when the tournament had moved to Epsom College. My team (U16) won the tournament. I can remember our team, just for fun, did some flamenco dance at the hotel that night. That was a really great tour.

SCC Rugby Academy U16, victorious at the KL Tigers Tournament 2018 (Josh is back row, far right)

The SCC Rugby Academy is open to all, you don’t have to be a member of the SCC to join. We offer training on Saturday and Sunday: Rugby and Touch U4- U19. Players who show commitment and talent have the chance to become a Junior Sports Member of the SCC, subject to approval from the Convenor.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

SHRIYA ASHA SHARMA 10-year old Singapore-born Shriya, daughter of SCC Members Pushpendra and Priyadarshini Sharma, published her first book titled “Unicorn Adventures: The Dark Forest” in January this year. We interviewed this 5th Grader, a student of the Canadian International School, to learn more about the budding author, her book, and about her pledge to donate the profits to charity. What is your book about? This book is about friendship, skills and adventure. The story is set in the magical land of Unitopia and follows the adventure of three unicorn friends – Miso, Milky & Mocha. The three friends each have a special skill and their adventure requires them to use their combined skills and smarts to overcome the various challenges in the cursed dark forest. Do the unicorns succeed in lifting the curse from the dark forest? You’ll have to read the book to know more.

Why did you decide to write this book? How long did it take to you finish it? I have always enjoyed writing from a very young age. While we were living in China, I was talking to my father about a story idea I had, and he then encouraged me to write my thoughts. When I started writing, I didn’t think that we could get the book published. But as I kept working, the story took shape and became a proper book. So, what seems now like a big step, was actually just a series of small steps. I was (and still am) fascinated by Magic, and Mystery, which became the theme for my book. I came up with the idea of the three unicorns with different skills, inspired by my wonderful friends and our experiences. I then thought of using things like riddles, math and magic to create some challenges that would make for an interesting storyline.

in mind, I have written this book that is an easy and enjoyable read for all children (and adults). The charity we are donating the profits is The Singapore Children’s Society whose Patron-in-Chief is Singapore President Halimah Yacob. I believe they are doing a wonderful job in supporting education of children in Singapore and I wanted to contribute towards this cause.

Do you have a favourite book and author? I love reading and have read a variety on authors. One of my favorite books is “Keeper of the Lost Cities” by Shannon Messenger. I am also fascinated by JK Rowling and have read the entire Harry Potter Series several times. I enjoy reading fiction, especially mystery and adventure books.

What would you like to be when you grow up? I have always wanted to become a doctor just like my grandmother Dr. Asha Sharma, who has been a role model for all of us. My middle name is Asha (meaning Hope) – which my parents gave me in honor of my grandmother. I hope to continue her legacy as a doctor and be able to help others via the medical profession. I also want to continue writing in my spare time.

The process from start to finish took about 9 months. I had started writing the book early last year, and finished writing it in October. Since in 2020 there were a lot of challenges - with COVID-19, online schooling, us relocating to Singapore from China, etc., the process got a bit delayed. Once the book was written, the next challenge was to get it published. My father had to do a lot of research to find the publisher and professional illustrator. I then worked closely with the editor and illustrator to create the final version of the book. This was a challenging but interesting process as I had to share the description of the characters with Rebecca (our illustrator) to really bring them to life.

What do you hope the children will learn after reading your book? I hope people reading the book will enjoy the story and the humor. There is also a lesson on being brave, and kind and using your smarts to help people. For me personally, one learning through the process of writing is that even if a project seems very complex or difficult, just taking small steps regularly can help to get the project done. This means that one should not be scared to take on challenges, because with the consistent effort most challenges can be solved. I hope my book encourages and inspires children to keep reading and to write about things they believe in or are passionate about. Short stories are a good way to practice your writing skills.

Why did you decide to donate the proceeds from your book to The Children’s Society? When I started on this journey to write my book, I also became more aware of how there are so many children around the world who don’t know how to read because they don’t have access to education. I decided that the profits from my book would go towards a charity to support underprivileged children’s education. With that

“Unicorn Adventures: The Dark Forest” will be available for sale at $16 from the SCC Souvenir Shop from 12 March 2021. All proceeds will be donated to Singapore Children’s Society, which protects and nurtures children and youth of all races and religions. It operates 12 service centres islandwide, offering services in the four categories of: Vulnerable Children and Youth, Children and Youth Services, Family Services, Research and Advocacy.

D’Arenberg Broken Fishplate Sauvignon Blanc, Australia

Super lifted spice, blackcurrant and blackberry. There’s an underlying dark fruit pastille, with liquorice and beef stock flavours that contrast some slight herbal notes. A medium bodied Shiraz with incredible concentration and length. This is a serious wine that is also quite accessible in its youth.

Fresh, and frisky! There’s masses of snow pea, lemon grass and citrus on the nose, with a clean, crisp palate. Lots of lemon, lots of lime and lots of tangy white grapefruit. It’s fast and furious, and super easy drinking! $58.00 per bottle / $14.80 per glass

FRANK DIGIORGIO Frank DiGiorgio is the Principal of DiGiorgio Family Wines at Coonawarra. In 1989 Frank set about planting vineyards at Lucindale as a means of diversifying the family business which was then sheep and cattle grazing and some cropping. From 1989 until 1998, 130 hectares comprising Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were developed and until 1998, all grapes were sold to corporate wineries in Coonawarra.1998 saw the first production of the family’s own wines from the family vineyards using a contract wine making facility in the Limestone Coast. Frank undertook the development of the vineyard utilising much of the farm’s existing machinery, local labour and specialist contractors where needed. That was the easy part. In March 2002, with the support of the family, Frank was able to negotiate the purchase of the Rouge Homme winery from Southcorp along with 14 hectares of grape vines surrounding the winery and from that moment began the steep learning curve of the wine industry, particularly contract winemaking and related services, distribution and logistics domestically and internationally, and of course the all-important sales and marketing, again domestically and internationally. Despite the challenges the wine industry has faced in the years since purchasing the winery, Frank had the confidence, desire and passion to continue to expand the family’s interest in Coonawarra given the highly regarded reputation of the region in the winescape of Australia and the world. The total vineyard holdings in Coonawarra now total 220 hectares taking the total area under vine and producing at 350 hectares. Frank says “he never goes to work” and attributes the success of the business to a diverse family business, surrounding oneself with great staff, a connection with the local community as individuals, sporting clubs and various community groups throughout the region. Frank says it also helps to have a positive and “can do” attitude and to strive for excellence in customer service. Building a rapport with customers whether it is an importer, distributor or the end consumer is paramount for business success. It also helps to have a very understanding and supportive wife in Margot. Frank and Margot have 2 children, Nick 31 and Jess 29.

Balut

Convenor: Sunita Kapoor | Article by: Cindy Raman

Early January brought welcome news that the Balut Section could resume its monthly in-house games. The Club graciously allowed the Section to have two games a month, with 16 players per game, subject to established protocols and compliance with all Club rules and regulations.

BALUT SECTION- FIRST IN-HOUSE GAME 2021. The first in-house game was held on Saturday the 16th of January 2021 at 2pm at the Gilmour Room. The four tables, with four players each, were spaced out and each player had their own mats, cups and dice. No drinks or food were allowed during the game, but Members were given two breaks between six games. After all the scores were tallied, Anwar Gaffoor emerged the overall winner with the highest individual score of 153 and the highest total aggregate of 671. Huned Hassanbhai had the lowest individual score of 50 and Rolf Stokkmo, with a score of 501, the lowest aggregate. The Second Balut in-house game was held on the 27th of January at 7pm at the Gilmour Room. The scores of both games were tallied and the overall winners for January are as follows. Highest Aggregate went to Anwar Gaffoor – 671 points, with Thomas Mummert and Robin Tessensohn coming in 2nd & 3rd with 638 & 633 respectively. BILLIARDS AND SNOOKER SECTION AGM AND A LOOK BACK AT 2020 The Section wishes to thank all the Section Members that attended the B&S Section AGM held on Saturday, January 9, at the Gilmour Room. We had a good dialogue on how to improve the playing experience in SCC. The key targets for this year: Refurbishing table 2 to tournament standards, maintaining an optimum playing temperature of 22 degrees Celsius in the Billiards & Snooker Room and, how to co-exist with the boisterous Men’s Bar environment when there are serious matches going on. We will also continue to look for good amateur players to join our Club and Section. The newly elected 2021 B&S Committee Members are: • Convenor: David Yim • Captain: Tan Bak Choon • Treasurer: Yap Giau Peck • Secretary: Jason Teo • Committee Members: Peter Gilchrist and Tushar Doshi

A SHORT RECAP OF KEY EVENTS BEFORE THE COVID-19 LOCK DOWN IN APRIL 2020 Even though the Club reopened on June 19, the Billiards & Snooker Room remained closed until Friday, October 2, as it operated under the Men’s Bar F&B license. Today the Billiards & Snooker Room is open but limited to eight players only and no F&B consumption is allowed. Our last celebration was CNY Celebration dinner held on Jan 31 which has traditionally been well supported. We congratulate our Section Committee Member and current World Billiards Champion Peter Gilchrist on his wedding that was held at the Padang in February and for winning the Sportsman of the Year, Singapore Sports Awards 2020 in October. Our Division 4 team was doing well in the National Snooker League before the lockdown and we are looking forward to the resumption of the league. We look forward to Phase III and resuming all our social Section activities. However, under the current social distancing restrictions and guidelines, it remains very difficult and challenging to arrange events. The new Committee will be coming up with some ideas to try to spruce up 2021. On behalf of the team, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you in the Billiards & Snooker Room.

From top right, clockwise: New Section Committee from left to right - Tan Bak Choon (Captain), GP Yap (Treasurer), Jason Teo (Secretary), Peter Gilchrist and Tushar Doshi (Committee Members), David Yim (Convenor); Peter Gilchrist wins Sportsman of the Year, Singapore Sports Awards 2020, Singapore for the second time; Peter Gilchrist’s wedding dinner with B&S Committee Members at the Padang Restaurant; Matthew Lim from SCC playing against NUS in division 4 National League; Section CNY celebrations in Jan 2020.

Bowls

Convenor: Christian Huang | Article by: Candy Lai

FROM SCC F&B PATRON TO PRESIDENT OF BOWLS SINGAPORE When Rodger Kimpton first joined the club as a spouse member in the 1970s, he and his wife Peck Tee only used the F&B outlets. Starting out as a squash player at the Tanglin Club, injury caught up with him and he gave lawn bowls a try. This was in about 1998. “In bowls, Peck Tee and I found a perfect game for couples to play where we could both compete on equal terms and we both really enjoyed it. At SCC we found plenty of willing teachers,” said Rodger. “The more you play bowls and the better you get, the more you realise that you still have lots to learn, so both of us were hooked to the sport.” The couple started to join SCC tours around the region for various friendly and competitive events. “Meeting and becoming friends with a worldwide fraternity of lawn bowlers is one of the nicest things, and it was a great way to get to know our SCC bowlers. We still reminisce about the trips and fun times we had together”. Most importantly Rodger noted, “Playing with so many different people on different greens each time gave us an express track to learning the game.” Over the years, Rodger has managed many podium finishes in the National and Club events. “I like the team events best; when the team is all playing at its best, you lift each other and it is a wonderful feeling.” Since 2017, he has been the National Squad coach for Bowls Singapore. In the same year, he led a Singapore team at the Asia Lawn Bowls Championship in India during which the Men’s Fours team won the Gold medal. There were three Silver medals to accompany in the other disciplines. That set the squad well placed to be selected to play in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Although there were no medals from that, there were further Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Asia Lawn Bowls Championship in China later that year. “Of course, our Ladies’ Triples winning our first Gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games after 20 years, and a Bronze medal in the Men’s Triples event, were very exciting for me,” said Rodger. Recently, Rodger was elected President for Bowls Singapore. “I really enjoy playing bowls and see it as a sport that Singaporeans can excel at internationally so I want to do everything I can to bring the game to the people and see the local players rise to their full potential.”

Rodger and his wife Peck Tee playing bowls on the SCC green.

On his plans for bowls development in Singapore, he felt blessed to have a new, hard working committee just starting out with many new and exciting ideas to develop Lawn Bowls in Singapore. “I have no doubt this will need many helping hands from the bowls community, so please volunteer to help us in our efforts to promote the game and build the next generation of lawn bowlers.” In his own words, he described bowls as “Lawn bowls - a day to learn, a lifetime to master and a lot of fun along the way.”

BOWLS SECTION AGM ON SATURDAY 16TH JANUARY 2021 At the Section AGM held at the Padang Restaurant at 2pm, 39 members and three General Committee Members were present. The following were elected into office for the new term: • Convenor: Christian Huang • Captain: Edmund Lin • Treasurer: T. Velu • Secretary: Bob Gattie • JSM Representative: Mary Lim • Committee Members: Melvin Tan and Srini Ramanathan Srinivasan Members present thanked the outgoing Committee for their work done during the last term and conveyed their best wishes to the new Committee to carry on the good work done. Following the AGM, the winners of the competitions held in 2020 received their prizes. MAR / APR 2021 THE PADANG

Golf

Convenor: Bala Supramaniam | Article by: Ravi T Chandran

Welcoming the year 2021 with hope and so much anticipation, the golfers of the Section look forward to the gradual and measured increase in the number of golf activities planned by the Golf Section Committee. While overseas trips are still a no-no, even to nearby locations like Malaysia, Batam and Bintan, it is hoped that with the advent of the vaccines in Singapore (and also in Malaysia and Indonesia), travel bubbles will start to appear. Although these travel bubbles will initially only be allowed for essential travel (meaning to visit sick relatives or for essential business purposes), the golfers await these with cautious optimism.

GOLF SECTION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Golf Section AGM was held at the Gilmour Room on 15 Jan 2021. Due to the current restrictions on attendance and in accordance with the government and Club guidelines on holding such meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided that only 24 members would be allowed to register to be physically present at the AGM. The registration was opened to Section Members several days before the AGM. The SCC golf masks, which were specially made for the Annual Golf Championship (scheduled on Nov 2020), were distributed free to all Section Members attending the AGM. The meeting transpired smoothly and with the exception of two changes to the main Committee (and one change to the co-opted Member), the remaining team remained in office for another term. The following are the Members of the new Committee: • Convenor: Bala Supramaniam (Bala) • Captain: Alvin Khoo (Alvin) • Secretary: Jagateesan Krishna (Krishna) • Treasurer: Koh Kheng Guan (KG) • Committee member: Michael Daryanani (Mike) • Committee member: Colin Khong Keen Wai (Colin) • Co-opted Committee member: Chionh Chye Hion (Chionh) The outgoing Golf Committee Members were appreciated and thanked by the Members who attended the meeting on the day. Special thanks were also reserved for Mr Richard Loo who had served the Golf Section Committee loyally for more than 10 years. The Members also appreciated outgoing secretary, Mr Ravi T Chandran, for his cameo service in the Committee and Mr Roland Leo Pereira for his contributions to the Committee. Finally, the Members also wished the incumbents all the very best and a better golfing year ahead. The Convenor commented at the AGM that the Section Committee had discussed in their meetings about refunding the equivalent of three months’ subscription fees ($30) which would be credited to each section member’s account in January 2021. The Convenor also clarified that the Committee did consider giving $50 F&B vouchers, before the final decision was made, but decided not to proceed with the voucher option as it was brought to the Committee’s attention that F&B vouchers would pose administrative difficulties. In the meantime, the Committee will endeavor to provide alternative appropriate benefits to Section Members. The Committee trusts that all Chinese Section Members had a happy, albeit somewhat subdued, Chinese New Year and wishes all Section Members and SCC Members a safe, successful and prosperous Year of the Ox!

Rugby

Convenor: Henry Winter | Article by: Chris Ellis

SECTION PUNDITS PRIMED FOR MOVE TO MAINSTREAM COVERAGE With rugby on hold due to the pandemic and the prospects of big money contracts slowly disappearing, Section Convenor Henry Winter and First Team Captain Declan Martens have been looking at their options for life after rugby. While Henry and Declan have pursued careers in law and education respectively, they have both made small but increasingly successful forays into mainstream media. Declan has appeared in society magazine ‘The Padang’ in recent months whilst Henry has added at least 40 new followers on the ‘Gram following successful ‘influencing’ campaigns. So, while 2020 has been a year to forget for so many, for Henry and Declan it represents their first steps into the swanky world of punditry and broadcasting. 1 Play Sports’ Rugby Lives Here, hosted by the very able Duncan Elias, invited Henry and Declan to their studio to provide insights into our iconic Club; their pathways to rugby greatness and why the SCC is the natural home for players from Hong Kong. Sporting washed and ironed SCC polos, our pundits looked relaxed on the pundit’s sofa, and their performance didn’t disappoint. Henry and Declan provided viewers with a fantastic overview of the Section including insights into how we have been able to build a sense of camaraderie across the teams, how the Club is developing a pipeline of talent, as well confirmation that we are indeed a very glamorous Club and that our ground is amongst the best in Asia. The appearance also represented an exciting opportunity for leading local historical Jack ‘Dreadnaught’ Whiskin who trawled through the SCC archives to pick out some fine insights into the Club and rugby in Singapore. Viewers heard how the game was brought over from Britain in the 1800s by a combination of the East India Company, The Navy, and some Scots; and the first match played was essentially Scots versus ‘the rest’ in the 1880s. The first confirmed rugby match for the SCC was a victory against the Selangor club in 1902. It also turns out that the SCC 7s is the second oldest Rugby 7s tournament in the world, after the Melrose 7s. The polished performance and “fantastic moustaches” will no doubt have raised eyebrows at Sky Sports as they look to finally upgrade from their current lineup, although COVID-19 travel restrictions may keep them in Stumps for the foreseeable future. Sky Sports loss though is Singapore’s gain, and we expect them to be on domestic networks shortly.

SCC RUGBY ACADEMY

Article by: Brendan Nolan, Tim Blakey and Anne-Marie Parnell.

HOW WE’VE GROWN! It has been nine years since the SCC Rugby Academy was established by a group of SCC Rugby Section Members. Fast forward and more than 600 youngsters from close to 100 different local and international schools now call themselves SCC Academy Rugby and Touch players. Due to the strong partnership with the SCC Rugby Section, we have a clear pathway for U17s to join the Rugby Section and continue their journey at SCC.

RUGBY This year we have a new Director of Rugby, Brendan Nolan. “As an Academy it’s always great to win games and lift some silverware at tournaments but that’s not the driver behind the Academy. It’s about helping our boys and girls develop not just their rugby skills but how to grow into young men and women in a fun and inclusive environment,” explains Brendan. “We provide Junior Scholarship Programmes where we offer young locals the opportunity to play rugby who ordinarily wouldn’t have been exposed to the game. We help them with kit and fees and watch them grow and understand the game. “We are actively working with Singapore Rugby Union to help build women’s rugby and year on year we continue to see more young females being introduced to the game and joining the academy,” he shares. “Our broader aspiration is for the SCC Rugby Academy to be a leading rugby academy across the region.”

TOUCH Director of Touch is Tim Blakey. “The SCC Rugby Academy’s Touch section has come a long way since it was inaugurated in 2012,” says Tim. “Starting with a handful of girls, we now boast more than 120 players. We are especially excited this year as we’re offering U18 training - the result of many of our girls growing up with us! “During this time, we’ve achieved some significant milestones, like players being selected for the Singapore “elite” squad, winning our first major tournament in KL (2015), winning our own SCC touch tournament on the Padang (2016) and successfully entering our SCC Lionesses in the TSG touch tournament (2018). “We’ve expanded our coaching team to many ex-Singapore national players and were delighted when Angelina Liu Huiyun (Angel) came on board as Touch Head Coach. He continues, “2020 brought many challenges, not least adapting to the limited training “pod” structure as part of the Singapore fight against COVID. We adapted well and continue to flourish under Angel’s coaching leadership.
