PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE Greetings in the New Year, everyone!

Sports at $1.16m (lower than LY $1.38m by -$224K).

5 December 2019 was certainly my proudest moment in all my years of service to the SCC.

With major cost savings in Cost of Goods and Overtime & Other Expenses (mainly Sports), Net Operating Profit is expected to close at not lower than $631K compared to LY $434K, an increase of $197K.

We were honoured to host Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mrs Lee at a dinner during which the PM was conferred the title of “Distinguished Visitor”. The conferment of this title makes PM the Club’s third Patron – a title which was first bestowed upon the then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 12 December 1970, and upon then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 2 February 2007.

This good performance would not have been possible without the strong understanding and support of our Members and Sections and on behalf of the General Committee, I thank you for that; we look forward to consolidating the financial report for the year and reporting it to the Membership in March 2020.

At the dinner, Prime Minister Lee also witnessed SCC’s presentation of a cheque donation of $300,00 to SportCares – funds which were raised by the Members through donations, charity auctions, and raffle ticket sales during our SCC Bicentennial Celebrations, and by our Sections. Thanks to our Members’ warm generosity, more programmes can now be developed and implemented to help underprivileged constituents including children and youth-at-risk.

Our SCC Members have continued to do Club and Singapore proud in sports. A total of 19 Member sportspeople and officials represented Singapore at the recent 2019 SEA Games and they collectively won eight medals, including two golds from the Lawn Bowls Women’s Triples Team – which included SCC Members Shermeen Lim and Amira Goh – and English Billiards Men’s Singles winner Peter Gilchrist. Thank you for your hard work, sacrifices and dedication to your sports!

The event was very well covered and Members can find out more about it on our website or directly via the following links:

The SCC International Rugby7s tournament was a rousing success thanks to the efforts of the Tournament Organising Committee and the Rugby Section. Stands were packed as fans watched the star quality rugby action on display on the Padang Field, including a very tight final match.

I am glad to say that we will end the year with an overall profit. Though the accounts have yet to be audited, the year will most likely end with Total Operating Revenue at $18.59m slightly above that of last year’s $18.55m with F&B contributing $9.66m (above last year’s $9.35m by +$310K), but set back by

Soon, we will host another tournament on the Padang – the SCC International Hockey6s from 29 February – 1 March 2020. We look forward to welcoming teams from around the globe and invite you to join us for a weekend of adrenaline-pumping hockey action. Come cheer on our SCC teams! On behalf of the General Committee, I would like to thank all Members for their strong support of all the initiatives we implemented last year and for their patronage of the Club – 2019 was a terrific year for us because of you. We are excited to see what new opportunities the new year will bring us and look forward to seizing them and bringing the Club to greater heights. I wish all Members and their families a monumental New Year ahead. Sher Baljit Singh President, Singapore Cricket Club

SCC Distinguished Visitor’s Dinner with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

$300,000 cheque donation was presented to SportCares at the event SCC was honoured to host Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife Mrs. Lee at the Club on Thursday, 5 December 2019, at our Distinguished Visitor’s Dinner. At the dinner, Prime Minister Lee was conferred the title of “Distinguished Visitor”. The conferment of this title makes the Prime Minister the Club’s third Patron – a title which was first bestowed upon the then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 12 December 1970, and upon then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 2 February 2007. Prime Minister Lee was introduced to the General Committee and stalwart Members from different generations of sporting excellence, who represented Singapore at different international sporting events. Among them was Shermeen Lim, a national lawn bowler of more than 10 years and Asian Games gold medallist. She more recently participated in the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines along with 18 other SCC members and won the Women’s Triples gold medal; coincidentally, one of the Members introduced to Prime Minister Lee was Rosemary Tessensohn who won a gold medal for Bowls exactly 20 years ago at the 1999 SEA Games. Amos Boon, organising committee chairman of the SCC International Soccer7s Tournament, also met with the Prime Minister and introduced the Club’s four marquee tournaments to him. The Prime Minister also witnessed the presentation of a cheque for $300,000 by SCC President Sher Baljit Singh to SportCares, represented by Sport Singapore CEO Mr Lim Teck Yin. SportCares was adopted by SCC at the suggestion of the Prime Minister, particularly in view of the ethos which both organisations share of engaging the community through sports, and leveraging sports experiences to make a positive societal difference. The evening concluded with the presentation of the Distinguished Visitor membership cards, SCC’s History Book, and a specially commissioned dragon tea gift set created by internationally-renowned sculptor Emma Rodgers, to the Prime Minister by SCC President Sher Baljit Singh.

A SCC Member’s Review:

VISIT TO KELVIN GROVE CLUB ON 4 OCTOBER 2019 – By Gerard Ong

Nestled in the leafy up-market suburb of Newlands in Cape Town, is the grand old club of Kelvin Grove, the largest sports and social club in South Africa. Located at 144 Campground Road, it took us a 20-minute Uber ride from the centre of Cape Town city centre to the club. Started in 1925 originally as the Western Province Sports club, it was renamed Kelvin Grove Club in 1934 and has approximately 7,000 members today. We disembarked at the club’s grand entrance after the usual security checks at the entrance. After producing our letter of introduction, and signing in at the lobby, we were invited to make use of all the club’s facilities by the club’s friendly and welcoming staff. The main aim of the short visit was to watch the live telecast of the Springbok versus Italy rugby game at the club, have lunch and later adjourn for some coffee at one of the club’s F&B outlets before making our way to the airport. From the moment we walked into the impressive lobby, we were filled with the old-world ambience of the club. From the elegant floor tiles to the fine glass doors, the club provides you with a warm welcome to a by-gone era of old South Africa. The wood panelled corridors into the interior of the club leads you to another grand lounge hall with classic chandeliers and furniture of another grand era. Located next to the grand lounge hall is the enclosed formal dining area offering a western menu. To the side of the grand hall is an open-plan sushi bar which offers an oriental lunch and dinner menu. When told that the game was being screened in the Pool Bar located next to the pool deck outside, we decided to make our way there. We stepped out into the pool deck area from a side door of the grand lounge area and walked 50 metres to the Pool Bar which was now filled with a boisterous and jolly group of South Africans of both sexes, most of whom were wearing the Springbok rugby jerseys waiting for the game to begin. The Pool Bar reminded me very much of the SCC’s Men’s Bar with its circular bar counter, well-stocked beverages, framed pictures of sporting teams, and trophies. What caught my eye was its convivial atmosphere and club camaraderie. What surprised me most were the bar prices. A gin tonic and a pint of Castle lager costed us all of S$6.

After the first half of the game we took in a quick lunch at the sushi bar where we were served some oriental tapas. We had a friendly banter with the head waiter and chef who, when they found out we were from Singapore, kindly provided us with a special dish of vegetable tempura. This made our welcome extra special. We later made our way to the Coffee Shop where we continued to watch the second half of the rugby game in the cosy comfort of the F&B eatery. We were pleasantly surprised to see many older couples watching the game over coffee and cakes. Perhaps unlike the younger drinking crowd at the Pool Bar, the older club members preferred to watch the game over a quieter cup of coffee with their partners. In SCC’s premises, one usually finds single male members watching sporting matches on TV but over at Kelvin Grove, there were equal numbers of men and women both at the Pool Bar and the Coffee Shop watching the game. I suspect it is because the Springboks were playing and rugby is akin to religion in South Africa. After coffee we took a walk outside the club to take in the extensive layout and facilities of the club. There was a family restaurant called the Barn located in a separate building close to the entrance of the club. Besides a swimming pool, the club boasts two lawn bowling greens, its own cricket & rugby fields, tennis & squash courts, and a fully-equipped fitness centre. Although we spent only four hours at the club, we felt very welcomed at all times. Club members were generally friendly and warm. The wait staff also provided us with excellent service. It was a pity we did not spend more time at Kelvin Grove and were unable to take a full tour of the club’s grounds and facilities. Kelvin Grove is definitely a premier sports club in Cape Town well worth visiting the next time you make a trip to South Africa. The club’s location is ideal as it is a short drive from Cape Town city, and a short hop to the airport. For those who want to make more extensive use of the club’s facilities over a longer span of time in Cape Town, there are numerous options for accommodation such as guest houses and hotels located close to the club. I would strongly recommend our members make full use of the reciprocity of Kelvin Grove, visit the club, and enjoy the club’s facilities which are not restricted to non-resident members the next time they visit Cape Town. FE ATURE

The Origins of Chinese New Year The origin of Chinese New Year, one of the most important festivals in the Chinese culture, dates back to about 3,500 years ago. Overtime, the customs of this festival have evolved and changed. It is believed that Chinese New Year began during the Shang Dynasty (1600 – 1046 B.C.) with sacrificial ceremonies held in honour of gods and ancestors at the beginning or end of the year. Then, during the Zhou Dynasty (1046 – 256 B.C.), the term 年 (nian), meaning year, was established, and pagan and ancestor worship become a social custom that blessed harvests at the turn of the year. The first day of the first month in the lunar calendar (i.e. the date of the festival) was only determined in the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. – 220 A.D.). Celebratory activities, such as the burning of bamboo to make a loud cracking noise, became popular. Chinese New Year developed from a religious to a social festival during the Wei to the Qing Dynasty (386 A.D. – 1911 A.D.). People started to form customs like spring cleaning, having reunion dinners, staying up late on the eve of the New Year, and watching lion dance performances.

5 Chinese New Year Traditions

1

SPRING CLEANING

Thorough cleaning of houses represent “sweeping away bad luck”, bidding farewell to the old year, and welcoming the New Year.

STAYING UP LATE

3

2

Containing money, they are traditionally given to children and are supposed to signify the transfer of fortune from the elders to the younger ones.

(守岁/ SHOU SUI/ MEANING ‘TO KEEP WATCH OVER THE YEAR’)

4

It is believed that the longer children stay awake on the eve of the New Year, the longer their parents will live.

5

LANTERN FESTIVAL

The last day of the New Year (i.e. the fifteenth day) is traditionally celebrated with the Lantern Festival. Lanterns are either released into the sky or water bodies for good luck.

FIRECRACKERS AND FIREWORKS

It is thought that the louder the firecrackers, the luckier it will be for business in the coming year. They are also set off at midnight on the eve to chase away bad luck.

Deepavali Night SCC opened our evening of Deepavali celebrations on 1 November 2019 with the traditional lighting of the lamp ceremony. This was followed by a spectacularly energetic dance performance at the Main Lounge by Bhangra dancers that got everyone hyped up for the rest of the evening. Members and guests feasted on a fully booked buffet dinner at the Oval, featuring a unique nitrogen mango kulfi live station. They then showed off their dance moves and grooved the night away to live band entertainment by Evergreen Souls.

Big Reds – An Italian Wine Pairing Dinner

Stock Up for the Holidays

The 12 SCC Wine and Gourmet Series was an Italian affair held on 29 November 2019. Members and guests enjoyed a selection of Italian drops – from sophisticated drops from Piedmont to elegant blends of plums and cherries from Abruzzo. The bottles from various regions of the European country were paired with an exquisite 5 course dinner prepared by the culinary team at The Padang Restaurant.

In preparation for the festive season, SCC held a Christmas Wine & Cheese Party on 6 December 2019. There were over 80 varieties of sparkling, red, and white wines from France, Italy, Argentina, New Zealand and more for Members and guests to taste and bring home at special prices. To enhance the wine tasting experience, there was a tempting array of starters and mains such as crab crostini, poached salmon, and chicken roulade to go with the wines. Participants could also pair their favourite bottles with a fine selection of cheeses and a raclette counter.

Themed “A Fiesta of Heritage and New Beginnings”, the SCC’s two-week celebration of Singapore’s Bicentennial from 11 – 26 October 2019 paid tribute to Singapore and the Club’s heritage while also heralding a new era in nation building.

The celebrations kicked off with a modern Asian four-course dinner created by Celebrity Chef extraordinaire Eric Teo, with each course paired with wines from the Commonwealth (11 October). The SCC Peranakan Fiesta on 18 October featured BI AL CE N T E N NI a Straits Chinese buffet feast prepared by The Peranakan’s Chef Raymond Khoo, while local night “street” stalls at the Club’s Courtyard sold batik patchwork pieces, rattan bags and print crafts among other items. The evening’s rousing live entertainment was kindly provided by The Peranakan Voices (TPVs) choir and band from The Peranakan Association Singapore. Celebrating Singapore 1819 - 2019

On 20 October, the entire Clubhouse was opened for the Club’s Family Day that saw families coming together to enjoy pony rides, bouncy castles, bubble soccer, story-telling, and various F&B and games stalls. The Club was also open for tours to interested members of the public that made prior appointments. Kavin Jay, one of Southeast Asia’s most sought-after comedians, headlined the SCC Comedy Night on 23 October, with popular local boy Sam See and rising star Qam taking to the stage for a fun-filled night of hilarious stand-up comedy. Hosted by celebrity host Pete Price, the evening also saw a number of prized items displayed for a charity auction. Of special significance to SCC was the participation of Chef Paul Askew – a pioneer of excellent modern British cuisine and the Chef Patron of the Art School Restaurant in Liverpool, UK – in the club’s events. Chef Askew spent part of his childhood in Singapore with his parents who were SCC members and often visited the Club with them to play lawn bowls and have dinner, so this was a homecoming of sorts for Chef Askew. He conducted a cooking demonstration at a special four-course Luncheon paired with wines on 22 October. SCC was honoured to have the Minister for Communications and Information Mr. S Iswaran as the Guest of Honour at the SCC Heritage Charity Ball held at InterContinental Hotel in Bugis on 25 October. The evening opened with a welcome procession of the Gurkha bagpipers band and representatives from the SCC Sport Sections led by Josephine Lim of the Bowls Section and Arun Vijayan of the Cricket Section – both National sportspeople who have represented Singapore regionally. In addition to enjoying an exquisite dinner prepared by Chef Askew, members and guests also got down to the serious business of raising funds for our adopted charity SportCares through silent and live auctions and a raffle draw, before they danced the night away with live band entertainment from “10 Seconds”. The final event of SCC’s Bicentennial celebrations was the SCC Football Youth Tournament and Carnival on 26 October, that was held on the Padang, in partnership with SportCares. The morning started with a football clinic with coaches direct from Chelsea FC IDC Singapore for some of the young constituents from SportCares, as well as the U14 and U18 seven-a-side mini football tournament for SportCares football teams from its development programmes – providing a platform for SportCares’ constituents to play, interact with others and learn to be better versions of themselves through sports; the winning teams were invited to compete in the 2020 SCC International Soccer7s Tournament. Two exhibition games were also held – one for Women’s Football, and the other a match between SCC/GC/SportCares vs SG ex-Nationals. In total, the SCC has raised $300,000 for SportCares through these activities, and this would not have been possible without the strong support and enthusiastic participation of our Members. Thank you very much, and well done!

s 7 y b g ru l a n io t a rn e t in c the 72nd sc ends in a dash!

By Jonathan Leow

This year’s 72nd edition of one of the world’s oldest 7s continuing 7s tournaments had a lot to live up to, coming off the back of a fantastic Rugby World Cup in Japan and its own storied reputation. The dates were moved slightly, but it did not seem to deter old friends from across the globe from descending onto the historic Padang field to contest for the Ablitt Cup. Defending champions Daveta had come to try and win the title back to back, determined to win it in the memory of the Nicholson Family, Members whom were lost in the tragic Easter bombings in Sri Lanka. Daveta, the Sri Lankan Tuskers and a Singapore Select side had congregated on the Padang earlier in the week to participate in a memorial rugby 10s tournament with Ben Nicholson in attendance. Seeking some redemption of their own were the young guns out of Ponsonby. The Auckland club is one of New Zealand Rugby’s most successful club and they had with them ambassador Sir Bryan “BG” Williams on this trip, hoping to inspire them to reclaim the Ablitt Cup they have only won once to date. Last year’s finalists, the Cougars from Casuarina, Darwin, Australia certainly brought with them a team that could bring them their first title. A handful of experienced Australian 7s reps and some Fijian Flyers dotted the squad and they certainly looked the goods coming into the first day of the competition. Every team this year seemed to want to win the main competition, and came with squads that looked to contend. The tournament had no less than three national development sides in 2019, namely from Thailand, Sri Lanka and Singapore; all three teams using the tournament as a warm up for their Asian Olympic Qualifying aspirations a week later. Japan was well represented as well with Tamariva and Karumi Clubs – long-time visitors to the tournament. Tamariva in particular seemed to come with a side that could spell trouble for some teams, including a former Japanese captain in their ranks. So with all the teams assembled, the first day of the competition kicked off with a flurry and some evenly contested games throughout the day. The corporate stand was starting to get sustainably fed and the crowd in the public stands equally boisterous. No major upsets, just some really close shaves. The weather on Satruday was just glorious and as the sun descended, one hoped for some great weather on Sunday as the tournament headed into its business end. Sunday beckoned and the Cup quarter finals started with an all-Singapore affair with the Singapore Select squad facing off hosts Singapore Cricket Club. It was surreal to see more than a few clubmen playing against their mates for their country, and in the end Singapore held on to proceed to the Cup Semi Finals for the first time. Daveta made it an easy game disposing off the Sri Lankan Tuskers in their quarter finals, which was not the case with the Cougars who went against the Thai National Squad in the guise of BKK12. It was a see-saw game, with the Cougars eventually coming out victors. First time competitors OGAS Wild Bucks had done well to get to the Cup Quarters but came up against a very young but talented Ponsonby side and went down fighting. Daveta were scared on the pitch by a determined Singapore side at times in their Semis, but in the end on the scoresheet won comfortably. Ponsonby faced the Cougars in a rematch of last year’s semi finals. It was some brilliant footwork that set up what many had called as the final from the start – Daveta vs Ponsonby. And what a Final it was. For the first time ever the tournament, including the finals, was broadcast to the world through the wonder of technology, with the feed streamed live on social media. The talented commentary team had done a brilliant job the whole weekend, and certainly called the game of their lives in the final. It looked to be one-way traffic in the opening minutes, coming from Ponsonby. The young Ponies controlled the game remarkably well for the first half and looked to be in control. It was a see-saw battle which in the end saw Daveta pull out all the stops and pull the final out of the bag, winning another title by a margin of 2 points. All in all, it was a great and successful tournament done and dusted as the Ablitt Cup was handed by Daveta to Ben Nicolson and their trademark song was heard on the historic Padang. Another year, another set of memories, and many more to come!

INTER-CLUB LEAGUE TOURNMENT The last Inter-club League game was held at the Tanglin Club on the 16th of October 2019. After an exciting night of Balut, the regular prizes were handed out, with Singapore Indian Association taking home the top prize. The night concluded with prizes for the overall highest team aggregate for the year and yes, SCC Team 1 took top honors. So SCC will be holding the finals for the Inter-club League in 2020! INTERPORT VISITS BY ROYAL SELANGOR CLUB AND ROYAL BANGKOK SPORTS CLUB IN NOVEMBER 2019 Royal Selangor Club Convenor Tanis Chin brought a small group of players from Kuala Lumpur to play a friendly game with SCC. The match was held at SCC on Saturday 9 November 2019. It was a busy weekend as we were also hosting the Rugby 7s. The games were played in a friendly atmosphere with 4 singles and 4 doubles followed by dinner at the Victoria Room. We wish to thank RSC for visiting us and we will be paying them a visit in May 2020 when it is our turn to head up to Kuala Lumpur.

Royal Bangkok Sports Club Convenor Potch Phijaisanit and Dr Eakalux rounded up a group of players and paid a visit to SCC the week after Royal Selangor Club on 16 November. The matches were held on a Saturday afternoon and after the traditional chicken rice lunch, we began the 4 singles and 4 doubles matches. The format was 6 red and 2 frames per match. RBSC beat SCC in what was a competitive but friendly atmosphere. Dinner was held at The Courtyard. In 2020 it will be our turn to visit RBSC.

Bridge

Convenor: Edith Somogyi | Article by: Charles Macgregor

SCC CELEBRATIONS The Bridge Section Deepavali celebration was held on Monday 4 October. Proceedings commenced with a sumptuous Indian buffet specially prepared for the evening by our Club chef. After dinner a full house of 18 pairs sat down for 21 hands of somewhat rowdier than usual bridge. Scores over 60 were registered by four pairs: Raj Jayaram (Keppel) and P.A. Zafar (visiting from India), Jennifer Du and Prof. C.C. Chen (Keppel), Beng Tee Haythornthwaite/Chris Wong (Geylang West), and Firoz Khimji/Charles Macgregor. Club vouchers with awarded to Firoz/Charles (best SCC pair) and to Lee Cheong Seng and Susan Milford (best dressed) – photographed with Edith Somogyi receiving the vouchers. The Section is looking forward to the Christmas (13 December) and Chinese New Year (3 February) celebrations.

QUADRANGLE GAMES SCC participates with Singapore Recreation Club, Keppel Club, and Singapore Swimming Club in an annual tournament with hosts rotating through the clubs. In October we journeyed out to the two massive complexes that are the Singapore Swimming Club. The two teams representing our club were SCC Black (Edith Somogyi, King Fook Chan, Lee Cheong Seng, Charles Macgregor) and SCC Gold (Patricia Jasudasen, Chitra Varapasad, Philip NG, Soma Devi). Our results were very encouraging with SCC Black finished in 3rd place out of eight teams, while SCC Gold came in 7th. The SCC Black result was pleasantly surprising considering that Cheong Seng and Charles were partnering for the first time. On November 24, two teams waded across a wet Padang to the Singapore Recreation Club. Representing the club were: SCC Black (Edith Somogyi, Charles Macgregor, King Fook Chan, Mike Sharples) and SCC Gold (Perumal Ramanathan, Usha Perry, Esther Desilva, Kumud Rangroo). Both teams finished a commendable equal fifth out of eight teams, which was encouraging. The good news is we are now building an armoury of competitive pairings with an eye on giving Tanglin a bit of scare at the next POT games! A special thanks to all the players who had foregone a Sunday afternoon to represent the Club.

SINGAPORE ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE Singapore qualified in April for the U25 and the U20 team’s category for the world youth bridge championships in 2020, to be held in Salsomaggiore Terme, Italy. The Ladies failed to qualify automatically, finishing just outside the four at the regional qualifications, but the World Bridge Federation has allowed Singapore to participate. There will be a new category at these championships, U31, and Singapore has been invited to compete.

WEBSITE Our website was launched in the last quarter, thanks to Carl Parker. This will contain past results and will allow players to track their progress. There is also a calendar for upcoming events and contact details for anyone wishing to play on Mondays and/or join the section. https://www.bridgewebs.com/sccbridge/

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Bridge is essentially a social game, but unfortunately it attracts a substantial number of antisocial people.” Alfred Sheinwold The game of bridge has been affected by sometimes heated post-mortem discussions between partners, that at times descend into the realms of disrespect and rudeness. Unfortunately, this has resulted in some people leaving the game. Last year, the American Contract Bridge Association codified a Zero Tolerance policy for unacceptable behaviour and issued a poster entitled “Play Nice”. These have been adopted by the Singapore Contract Bridge Association and by our own Bridge Section. One would expect, as a Club, that we are all part of a community, who seek to engage and befriend our fellow Members. The good news is the Bridge Section is, indeed, one of the friendliest on the island!

30TH SEA GAMES IN PHILIPPINES – LAWN BOWLS

Gold and bronze medals at the 30th SEA Games 2019! What an eventful trip to the Philippines! Our 14-strong Lawn Bowls contingent led by head coach and fellow member Rodger Kimpton came away with a hard-fought haul of two medals out of four events. The first of the two medals came on the second day of the competition when our Men's Triples team of Thomas Leong and fellow members Melvin Tan and Matthew Ngui trounced Thailand 23-14 in the Bronze medal playoff. It was sweet revenge, as they had earlier lost to the same Thai team 14-22 in the final preliminary round match on the same day. What was incredibly crazy in this playoff match is that the trio had dropped a full-house of 6 shots in the 1st end and had to play catch-up with the Thai bowlers. It was only at the 9th end (out of a total of 18 ends) that our Singapore men led on the scoreboard for the 1st time at 11-10. They never looked back since, winning 7 of the next 9 ends to earn the Bronze for the nation.

The second and more impressive of the two medals came on the last day of the 4-day competition when our Singapore Women’s Triples team of Margaret Lim and fellow members Amira Goh and Shermeen Lim overcame host Philippines in the Gold medal match. It is the first team Gold medal in Lawn Bowls, and the first Gold medal for Singapore in lawn bowls in two decades. The previous Gold medal in lawn bowls was won by another fellow Member, Rosemary Tessensohn, who had beaten her Malaysian counterpart in the Women's Singles in the 1999 SEA Games edition in Brunei. The Philippines team started the match on a high, leading 7-1 after 6 ends, and then 9-3 after 9 ends. Shermeen and her team rallied back to take 3 shots in the next end to cut the deficit to 6-9. In her own words, "We never let the score bother us, and we were focused on what we needed to do." They were firmly in control soon after, winning 2 shots each in the 5 ends of the remaining 8 to a triumphant score of 16-13. Emotional scenes burst around our "Golden Girls" at the end, as our Singapore contingent of bowlers proudly sang to the National Anthem played during the medal presentation. Well done to our Singapore bowlers in flying our nation's and club's flags high!

DARTS CHRISTMAS PARTY ON 13 DECEMBER 2019 The grand finale of the year was celebrated in pomp and style true to the spirit of Christmas on 13 December. Due to limited seating at Gilmour Room we could only accommodate 45 Members and their guests. Needless to say any gathering of darters is always boisterous affair. But mix it up with free flow of drinks, excellent food and pulsating music with dancing, and it culminated in an unforgettable sensory experience. The pictures tell the full story. Party games, door gifts and generous lucky draw prizes complemented the mood. A great big thank you to Helen Campos and her committee for hosting a great evening. Let’s keep the party going in 2020!! Happy New Year and look forward to your continued support!

SCC LIONS 2019 SEASON REVIEW (PART 1) 2019 was a season of hope and progression for the Lions. New players joined the team to add strength in depth that resulted in an air of great expectancy! With opposition sides becoming increasingly stronger, the ‘Lions’ team had to step up and duly delivered some exceptional results throughout 2019. The fixture list comprised 43 games, a 7’s tournament and a Comedy Night! The full year report card reads; Played 43, Won 23, Drew 5, Lost 15. Goals scored 126, Goals against 99. January went off with a bang; Three wins and a draw, including a win against an extremely youthful Dulwich side. 13 goals were scored with ‘The Hoss’ being named Player of the Month (PoM). February began with two losses. Normal order was resumed with a 2-1 win on the Padang vs TTS and duly followed up with an 11-0 thumping of the Muddy Welsh at Dempsey. Dougie Wills was PoM for his 2 goals and 5 assists. March would be the last time before the Autumn that the Lions would get access to the Padang. GAS were first up in the Henrik Lorenz Plate and were easily dispatched 7-2. The Lions were triumphant in a very enjoyable game played in great spirit. Next up was the British Club, who were beaten 2-0 in a more closely contested game. Disappointingly, the month ended with a very narrow 2-3 loss to a strong Spartans side on a heavy Dempsey pitch. March’s PoM was George Parrot for his goals scored and sterling performances. April saw fixtures against Pirates (L 1-4), Hibs (L 1-3) and a narrow win over the Welsh Rovers – not a particularly successful month! April’s PoM went to Mike Whibley – the ultimate utility player.

SCC NFL SCC NFL’s season ended in disappointment, finishing 4th in the 11 team table. In the FA Cup, we fared little better being eliminated at the QF stage. Player of the Season was Captain Chang Guo Guang while the team picked up the NFL Fair Play Award.

SCC PADS SCC Pads recently visited Phuket to play their annual game against HKFC in support of the Youth Football Home. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, which meant that SCC retained the Henrik Lorenz Trophy for a third consecutive year – the first time either Club has accomplished this fete (a fuller report will appear in the next magazine).

SCC’S PERFECT 10 SEASON - SCC HOCKEY WINS 10 TITLES TO SET RECORD HAUL When the season started in January 2019, the whole Section wanted to do better than the one before. We wanted more people to attend our socials, trainings and of course ensure more Members of the Section participate and enjoy the many Section activities including playing competitive hockey. The sum of all our efforts culminated with many titles the Section won across the entire Section demography.

MEN’S 1S DO IT AGAIN (TITLES 1 AND 2) Our Men’s 1st XI squad won their 3rd National League title on the trot. This was their 4th title in five years - a feat not many other clubs in the history of Singapore Hockey have managed to accomplish. The men then won the Woodenshoe Men’s competition. The oneday affair saw them clinch the title following a tight match against the Hollandse Club in the finals.

LADIES’ 1S CONTINUE TO DO THE BUSINESS (TITLES 3, 4, 5 AND 6) The Section’s most successful team are the Ladies 1st XI and they started their title haul by once again winning the SCC International Hockey 6’s title with a clinical 5-0 win over Wakakichi Tokyo. They then regained their National League title for the 6th time in their history and 4th time in eight years. The Ladies then went on to defend their Women’s Liga League title for the 4th year running but lost the play-off final to the Hollandse Club. They finished their title haul by winning the National Indoor title, their 3rd title in a row. The ladies could have also added to this tally as they lost the finals of the Pesta Sukan Ladies open and were unlucky to finish 3rd in Royal Bangkok Sports Club International Hockey Festival.

JUNIORS START TO SPREAD THEIR WINGS (TITLES 7 AND 8) With much of the Section’s success coming from the 1st XI teams, it’s so refreshing to see our Juniors stepping up and being counted. The Boys won the Youth Liga for the third year running with an unbeaten season. Their female counterparts did the same and won all of their remaining games after losing their opening fixture to secure a Youth Liga double.

Ladies’ and Mens’ Teams in Bangkok.

MASTERS XI DO THE BUSINESS HOME AND AWAY (TITLES 9 AND 10)

shortage. They were in scintillating form in their maiden foray into ISCI’s inaugural Masters tournament where they beat a Malaysian side boasting many ex-internationals convincingly in the finals following a loss and draw in the pool games. The Masters then came home to play in the Pesta Sukan Masters and once again raised their game in the finals and beat the hot favourites Hockey Innovative also following a loss in the pool stages.

The Masters were aggrieved not to be able to play in the National Masters’ League for they had a well-trained team fit to become champions. Alas the league could not be organised due to pitch

From the young to the experienced, the Section has bonded well and through their happiness the results on the playing field truly stands out and we hope long may this state of affairs continue.

The Netball Section’s Annual JSM Schools’ Carnival, which engages the community and provides a platform for young budding talent to improve their game while growing the sport further in Singapore.

As we enter the start of the new year, SCC Netball would first like to take this opportunity to thank our partners and kind prize sponsors throughout our 2019 season. We’d like to thank our partners Grityard, Luge Sentosa, Energetic Apparel and OrthomedPhysio for their continued support throughout the 2019 netball season. The final two months of 2019 were busy for the Section with as much netball activity as social activities. The Netball Section occupied a full table at the SCC Heritage Charity Ball held at The Intercontinental, Singapore. Our ladies sure scrub up well! We had two representatives from the Section, Jasmine and Bella, who participated in the newly-reinstated 100-yard President’s Dash at the SCC R7s. Jasmine clinched a commendable 3rd place while Bella placed 5th. We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our little pocket rocket, Jasmine Smith for achieving the Netball Singapore C badge umpiring award. Wise & confident beyond her 15 years, this award is recognition of Jazzy’s contribution to the sport and hard work in contributing towards not just playing, but also officiating. We rounded off the year with our Annual JSM Schools’ Carnival, End-of-Year League and a Fundraiser Quiz Night in support of SCC’s Bicentennial Celebration fundraising efforts. The schools’ carnival was another resounding success with 14 teams participating across 3 categories this year. Shoutout to Simon Raftery and Helen Nguyen from OrthomedPhysio for their continued support of the Section. The End-of-Year League saw a record-breaking 17 teams participate (up from the usual 10-12 teams). Special mention to the following people for donating prizes for the fundraiser quiz night in aid of SportCares, which saw the Netball section raise $1,827: A Victoria Falls experience donated by

SCC GOLF SECTION CHRISTMAS GAME AND DINNER The last golf game of the year had a wonderful turnout of 13 flights (unlucky for some but, evidently, lucky for SCC members!) and 52 Members and guests. The game was played on Tuesday, 10 Dec 2019, at Orchid Country Club (OCC) which is known to be a ‘forgiving course’, as its wideopen spaces allowed for good recovery from wayward drives from the tee-box! I suspect our Convenor (Bala) and Captain (Alvin Khoo) chose this course so that all our golfing members will have ‘decent’ scores and therefore end the year on a happy note! The post-game dinner was held at the Himawari Japanese restaurant which was at the OCC Driving Range next to the main clubhouse. The prizes for the winners were given out at the start of the dinner and the following were the top three players at the game: • First Prize: Dennis Tan (SCC Guest): 49 stableford points • Second Prize: Ravi Chandran (SCC Member): 43 stableford points • Third Prize: Denny Siow (SCC Member): 41 stableford points Coincidentally, the winner was the owner of the Himawari Japanese restaurant. The dinner was well appreciated by the Golf Section Members and a big thanks to our committee member, Richard Loo, for organising the dinner at Himawari. The grand Christmas dinner was held at the Padang Restaurant on Saturday, 14 Dec 2019, with 70 pax. The evening was ‘tee-ed off’ with a cocktail reception at the Padang Landing with beer, bottles of white, red and sparkling wine, as well as copious amounts of whisky (as is the tradition of our Section). This ensured that everyone attending was in a ‘jolly’ state before the commencement of speeches and dinner!

Our Convenor Bala gave a short and sharp speech and urged all Members and guests to have a good evening and enjoy the festive cheer. The 5-piece band (The Rangers), supported by an excellent female lead singer, sang and played harmoniously all evening. SCC President Sher Baljit Singh graced the dinner and helped give away the lucky draw prizes sponsored by Section Members. The SCC Golf Section ended the calendar year literally with a ‘BANG’ with Christmas crackers being popped at the end of the Christmas Dinner evening’s proceedings, but not before ‘Father Christmas’ (Cosmas Emerold Joosa) came out in Santa Claus costume, cheered everyone up and greeted them affectionately with warm hugs!

SCC LIONS END YEAR ON A HIGH DESPITE APPARENT ‘DISCIPLINARY CHALLENGES’ The final match of the decade for the SCC Rugby Section took place on the Padang between SCC Lions and Bedok 3s in conditions that reminded some of the players more of the English season than rugby in the tropics.

Bedok saw the game end a few minutes early at 41-12 to the SCC Lions. Clearly a few things to work on for the Lions but in the end a comfortable win and a chance to enjoy a few weeks off.

After a frustrating defeat to Oldham at the last outing for the Lions, the opportunity to squeeze in a last game before the mid-season break was a welcome chance to focus on clearing up some of the issues that have let them down so far this season. Having played many of the matches with 14 or even 13 men this season, working on the penalty count was a big focus that match day captain Shane Dewar highlighted numerous times in his various pre match team talks. The match started well for the Lions with back row Faris Fateen sliding over the line after some strong work from a dominant pack. However, Shane’s strong Aussie accent and repeated talk of penalties was not well understood by many of the team and the penalty count quickly started to rise. Ten minutes after scoring the first try Faris found himself staring at the Lions’ first yellow of the match. With this Bedok got back into the game and got themselves over the try line to take a 7-5 lead. A bit of frustration crept into the Lion’s games resulting in fly half Roy Tong receiving the teams second yellow card and leaving just 13 men on the pitch. A quick reshuffle in the backs brought Glen Dobbie in to Fly Half and tries by Brayan Nyoman and James Richardson meant Lions led at half time 17-7. Half time saw stern words from Head Coach Bryan Lim on the penalty count with Harresh nodding along in agreement. The kick off saw a lively start from the Lions resulting Dan Williams sniping through a gap to score under the posts. Further tries from James Richardson, Adrian Chia and debutant Alex Vandrome put the Lions firmly in control of the score line but the match remained a physical contest. On 60 minutes a brief period of handbags resulted in a Bedok player stumbling over himself, as James Richardson made his size felt by making loud noises. Incredibly poor James Richardson was shown a yellow card. It is likely no one will ever really know what happened. A late try for the SCC by Brandon Ng followed by a consolation for

Some of our participants from the World Squash Day Parent-Child team event; Players in good spirits after the World Squash Day afternoon friendlies

WORLD SQUASH DAY 12 OCTOBER 2019 Squash clubs around the world from Australia to Peru, UK to Egypt, and here in Singapore staged events for this year’s World Squash Day (WSD). Our day started with an Open House in the morning with 3 coaches on hand and then went on to a Parent & Child Team Event which was very popular. We had 11 teams competing, and it was a crazy 2 hours as players were rushing from court to court to play their games. The kids were very serious about it and parents felt under some pressure to perform. It was heart-warming to see our next generation of players. Following that we moved on to the afternoon event with over 30 players divided into 2 teams – red and white shirts playing games of 15-minute continuous squash. We were joined by players from The Chinese Swimming Club and 5 young men from Fairfield Methodist School. There were lots of exciting games and tired players by the end of the afternoon.

too strong on court and achieved a resounding win by the end of the afternoon. Post-match refreshments were held at TAC’s Traders Bar, where new friendships were forged as we bonded over grub and drinks. We headed to the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club (YCAC) on 10 November. It was a good 30min trek up the hill to reach the lovely club and by the time we arrived at the club, we were well warmed-up and ready to play. The players had a fun afternoon of squash and laughter between the teams. There were some hard fought matches with SCC prevailing at the end of the afternoon. We hope both TAC and YCAC will have the opportunity to come out to Singapore so that SCC can reciprocate their warm hospitality. It was a great weekend of squash and exploring Tokyo and Yokohama. It was suggested that the squash section should do Tokyo or other squash tours more regularly. If you are interested in joining a squash tour in 2020, please reach out to Eleanor (helloeleanortan@gmail.com) to indicate your interest.

Next up was a speed gun challenge which measured how fast our players could hit a squash ball. The fastest player got to 199 km/h, which was the upper limit of the speed which the gun could pick up. It was anyone’s guess how fast the speed of the ball actually was. World Squash day meant a full day’s worth of celebrations for SCC Squash, and we couldn’t miss out on a dinner, served with a twist. Dinner was held on the veranda accompanied by a screening of some matches from the US Open projected onto the front wall of Court 2. It was our very own “movie night”, a first for SCC. A special note of thanks goes out to Ken and the Sports Department for all their help. If anyone would like to try out squash or wants to pick it up again, please drop an email to sccsquashers@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you (and in case you didn’t know, we have a group of very keen women players as well). Make it your new year’s resolution to get back on court!!

SCC TOKYO SQUASH TOUR 2019 This was the last trip for our squash tours in 2019. Tokyo autumn day time temperatures were about 15c - much cooler than our 32c in Singapore - it was an interesting contrast to play in cooler courts than we are used to at SCC. It was also wonderful weather to explore the hip Tokyo suburbs, exciting restaurants and bars on foot during the weekend. On 9 November, we played the Tokyo American Club (TAC) with 10 matches. There were some hard fought matches but TAC proved
