Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis, is probably the most common elbow complaint. It occurs on the lateral side of the elbow joint, the side which is furthest away from the body. The muscles and tendons which are responsible for I\XIRHMRK XLI [VMWX STIRMRK XLI LERH and turning the palm up are most at risk of this problem. This condition is also seen more commonly in certain occupational activities including repetitive computer keyboard and prolonged intensive mouse activity, typing, writing, carpentry, plumbing and repetitive activity.

Why does it cause pain?

is a result of an imbalance between the protective/regenerative changes within the body and the pathologic responses that result from repetitive tendon overuse.

The net result is tendon degeneration, weakness, tearing and chronic pain.

How do we prevent it?

The repetitive nature of movements can unfortunately cause injuries, which can be both very disappointing and frustrating.

18,000 miles in the saddle An ambitious young graduate has spoken of his adventures taking on a challenge to cycle the world in a year.

Josiah Skeats, 22, from Herne Bay, revealed he had been inspired to take up his epic quest after hearing stories of a similarly epic biking endeavour.

Before setting out this summer, the intrepid traveller gave a talk to Herne Bay Junior School to inspire children to take on their own personal tests. To date, Josiah has completed more than 1,500 miles of

his 18,000-mile trip, which includes travelling to Australia, America and a total of 30 countries.

“For the past two years, this was the dream I was working towards.

The most challenging thing is loneliness – but virtually everyone I have met over the course of this trip has been fantastically supportive and kind.”

Josiah said that while there had been little physical preparation for his monster ride, he spent plenty of time researching routes and appropriate equipment.

“I found it no chore saving money as this trip was my passion.

I even bin-dived for my third year of University, spending no money on food, and living well off supermarket waste. The other thing is travelling by bike is very cheap – my accommodation in the form of wild camping is free, and I live off £3 to £5 per day. The past nine weeks and 3,500km has cost less than £250!”

Canterbury Roman Museum has been recognised with a Sandford Award for Heritage Education. The accolade celebrates the best education programmes at heritage sites, museums, archives and collections across the country, focusing on formal, curriculum-linked opportunities offered to schools.

Lead judge for Canterbury Roman Museum, Irene Davies, praised the museum for the quality of learning it provides.

Within the 12 factors covered by the study were the cost of running a property and its market value.

According to the results from a total of 130 towns and cities, the top five places in the country were Harrogate, York, Chester, Shrewsbury and Ipswich.

Canterbury just made the top half, ranked 58th nationally, and was placed 13th within the region.

FAVERSHAM CREEK TRUST Faversham Creek Trust’s campaign for a new creek swing bridge to boost tourism is fast gathering pace, as the organisation’s Chairman Christopher Wright, reveals

University of Kent @ 50!

Dancing with robots, learning graffiti skills and discovering your inner caveman are all part of an array of activities rounding-up the 50th anniversary celebrations for the University of Kent.

The free festival begins on Friday, 4th September with more than 100 activities for everyone to experience across the weekend. Its opening event takes place in the surroundings of Canterbury Cathedral to mark its five decades of success – booking for this night must be done in advance as places are limited.

Among its star events will be an opportunity to catch some of the county’s finest cooks competing for gourmet glory and the title of Kent’s Best Baker; researchers in the School of Anthropology taking a surface scan of people’s faces to show them what they would have looked like as a Neanderthal some 200,000 to 300,000 years ago, and for those into their sports, there will be the chance to try some archery and bubble football among a host of activities.

Green & pleasant land Three parks and open spaces in the Canterbury district have been awarded a Green Flag accolade for the quality of their facilities. These include Duncan Down in Whitstable for the 10th consecutive year, Reculver Country Park for the 14th time in a row and Curtis Wood Park in Herne, for the third.

The national Green Flag scheme is aimed at parks and green spaces that have high standards of management, follow environmentally-friendly practices and involve the community to create attractive places for people and wildlife to enjoy.

Nationally, the initiative is becoming increasingly popular, with more than 1,500 sites picking up a Green Flag or Green Flag Community Award this year.

“They all work incredibly hard to make sure their open spaces thrive and I’d like to pay tribute to them for doing so. These awards are richly deserved.”

How challenging has it been leading a charitable organisation such as yours?

At first it was daunting. But we are lucky to have a group of like-minded people working together on the project.

They are gifted, they are working at a tremendous pace, and at times are almost unstoppable.

In your opinion, how much of a difference to Faversham will having a swing bridge make if the campaign for it is successful?

The changes will take place in several stages. The first will be the arrival of the Thames barges, with their sails appearing above the surrounding rooftops. Then the real work starts. After a period of dredging and the creation of a new wharf, boats will be coming in, some for restoration and repair, and others to moor in the upper basin as a winter haven. There will be a training programme in the Purifier building and the trainee shipwrights will work both inside the building and outdoors on the boats. Over the longer term we expect to see new gates so the water level will rise and form a pool for youngsters to learn to sail dinghies and canoes. The whole basin will come to life.

What do you enjoy most about being a part of your charity?

Getting to grips with an entirely new challenge and forming new friendships with other people who are doing the same.

Canterbury needs to look beautiful if it’s to go on being the city we love

A

visitor approaching Canterbury via the Castle will enter the city along Castle Street. They will probably notice the array of old rooftops and ancient buildings lining the narrow road and then, crossing Watling Street into St Margaret’s Street, glimpses of the Cathedral will be revealed.

It is part way along here that the derelict former Slatters Hotel and Ha Ha Bar sit empty and falling into disrepair. The land is owned by Canterbury Council, and residents and businesses alike have long hoped for improvement.

Last year renowned Kent and Londonbased architect Guy Hollaway was appointed to plan the regeneration, and proposals for the redevelopment were put out for consultation in the spring. These include renovation of existing listed buildings and demolition of the 1960s hotel, with ground floor commercial units fronting the street and a 130-bedroom hotel and rooftop restaurant with a terrace offering cathedral views.

The new frontage is modern, a distinct step away from the traditional facades of the rest of the street, which is no issue for Nick Chasteauneuf, owner of Micro Roastery, an independent coffee shop situated close to the site. He welcomes the plans for change; others are less pleased.

Action plan The application is large-scale and considered controversial, which means it will go before the Planning Committee. Before that happens, planning officers must follow the lengthy process of gathering reports from a range of agencies, including Highways and Conservation.

Chair of Canterbury Planning Committee is Jennifer Samper, who has served on this committee for nine consecutive years. Her time on the council began in 1976 and her experience in chairing committees covers Housing and Finance among others. She explains how each of the 12 members of the committee must be sure they are not entering the 14

process with any predetermination in their minds, as this would disqualify them from taking part: “You have to consider all the evidence that comes before you – written evidence, reports, listening to people speaking for and against. Then you weigh it up in the context of everything on its merits and within planning policy and law.”

This sounds straightforward, but how difficult is it to process when there are such diverse opinions – including objections from the Cathedral itself? “You can’t just dismiss an application because someone doesn’t like it,” Jennifer says. “We are very careful to stick to the rules and also careful that a presumption by central government and planning law is to grant unless there are reasons not to. Every application is judged on its own merits within planning policy.”

For & against Clive Bowley, Architect – Director of Anthony Swaine Architecture Ltd, in Canterbury, has had previous extensive experience as a Conservation Officer. He is reticent about the plans, citing TV architect Ptolemy Dean, President of the Canterbury Conservation Society and ex-Kent College student, who has commented that the progressional route from the castle into the city is the final leg of the pilgrimage route to Canterbury Cathedral, of immense historical

significance and one of the most important urban sequences in Europe.

Both Ptolemy Dean and Clive Bowley feel that anything intruding into this pilgrimage series of historic urban spaces is unacceptable. Clive Bowley also believes there is an issue regarding the architectural form of the facade. “Building right up to the pavement is what is needed in an historic town,” he says. “This plan demolishes the street frontage podium and sets the building back from the pavement line, which is always unsatisfactory.”

However, he is not suggesting Canterbury is kept in a time warp: “It’s more about the shape of the city, and if buildings are in the right position this creates a far better urban morphology, even with the most modern building.”

While conceding that people have different approaches, he cautions against modernists forcing present day designs on the city and making irreversible decisions.

“My view is that Canterbury had a traumatic experience during the war and in what was done in the post war planning period right through to the 1970s. A thousand years of damage was done in a few decades. The city needs more sympathetic handling; it needs to be gently mended, pulling forward frontages and using the right materials so the scars of that disastrous period of post war planning gradually fade away.”

Canterbury Conservation Society The Society welcomes the efforts of councillors and officers of the city council, but believes responsibility for enhancing the quality of life in Canterbury cannot be left in their hands.

It therefore seeks to encourage people to become involved and tries to represent ordinary people who wish to participate in the process. Members of the Society are also proactive in the environment, rolling up their sleeves with volunteer litter-picks, cleaning graffiti and removing junk from the river.

The Society’s objection to the Slatters proposal concerns its height and density, newly-created associated traffic problems and the unsympathetic frontage proposed for St Margaret’s Street.

However, the Society’s Chair, Jan Pahl, stresses that they are not against modern architecture existing alongside the old.

She admires the work done at Westgate Towers and welcomes the restoration of the hotel – while being firm that the debate is between priority for growth and protecting and enhancing the environment: “It’s been an eyesore for years, but we are concerned about the frontage along St Margaret’s Street. Heritage is an important contributor to the built environment, and people, including students, like coming to a lovely historic city. The city should be delightful to be in and Canterbury needs to look beautiful if it’s to go on being the city we love.”

What do you think of the plans for Slatters Hotel?

I fully support the plans but the use of quality materials that don’t weather badly is key, so the building will still have validity over time.

What do businesses need in Canterbury?

A busy and well-maintained Canterbury with a sense of vibrancy. I am tired of old buildings being left empty; they should be re-energised and made into new and enterprising businesses.

How important is Canterbury’s heritage in planning decisions?

Ideally there needs to be a nod to the modern as well as to the past. There must always be care regarding heritage but it’s better if conservation is not allowed to blight the future. It’s vital to protect our heritage, but not to the extent that it puts the brakes on modernisation.

We have to be more forward looking… there’s no point in being in the past.

THE PLANNING PROCESS • A planning application is generally dealt with by planning officers who have delegated powers to determine whether the application can be passed.

• There is a presumption by the central government and planning law to grant an application unless there are reasons not to.

• Planning officers will refer an application to the planning committee if it is controversial or has four or more objections or is a major application. It may also be referred to the Planning Committee by a ward councillor or a parish council.

• If the Planning Committee then makes a decision to grant the application there is no appeal for those who were/are against it. If it is refused then the applicant has the right to go to appeal. The appeal is looked at by the National Inspectorate (Canterbury’s areas is based in Bristol), which dispassionately considers the evidence.

Do empty buildings affect business?

There is definitely a sense of frustration that it has gone on as long as it has, and the council could have done more over the last 10 years. For example, they could have put a ‘wrap’ over the building as they did for the Beaney when it was renovated.

What can planning do to help business?

Businesses are always being told to look to the future, so the council and the city need to be behind this and not entrenched in the past. There is a constant fear that the new will be harmful. The ‘no’ campaign is good at saying no to things, but not good at putting forward something instead. How has it been better to keep something like the Slatters building like it is for so long?

roduced in Kent has launched Kent Young Chef Award 2015 – and this year’s competition is open to all Kent and Medway secondary school children in September with entries invited from budding young chefs in year groups 7 to 8 and 9 to 11.

Potential Kent Young Chefs will need to submit an original and innovative recipe for a main course using ingredients that have been grown or produced in Kent. Entries are submitted online and entrants judged to be the creators of the best eight recipes (four in each group) are invited to take part in a Live Final.

The Kent Young Chef Award has been running since 2009 and judging will take place on October 22nd, led by well-known Kent Chef Richard Phillips. This year Richard will be joined again Tony Blake of kff, plus exciting new judges Graham Garrett, Owner of the Michelin-starred West House in Biddenden, and ex-Claridges Chef Ewan Simpson, now Head Chef at Rowhill Grange.

New start for coastal bar & restaurant Not many bars come with their own ice cream kiosk – but it’s just one of the unique features of The Minnis Bay Bar & Brasserie which attracted new General Manager Daniel Cole.

W

hile its location may be tucked off the beaten track away from the main high street, The White Hart Inn has plenty to ensure it is well worth a visit.

Since taking it on a year ago, its youthful manager David Broome-Smith explains there has been plenty of graft involved in moulding it to his and partner Grace’s satisfaction, but he says the hard work is definitely reaping its rewards.

Their success was plain to see for our Tuesday night visit to mark my birthday, with a packed venue of city regulars eager for its weekly quiz.

Thankfully, there was space for us to dine and this charming traditional Canterbury pub served up one of the best meals we’ve had in a long while.

Though this cosy spot may not be huge inside, it is packed full of character, smart

decor and also has a star weapon up its sleeve in the form of an especially large garden.

We chose the mezze platter to start, which was attractively presented and surprisingly substantial – consisting of olives, hummus, and some fine fresh bread.

Among some of its specialities are its ‘harty pies’, which we could not resist. I chose the Mediterranean vegetable one with grilled feta cheese, which was quite delicious, while my guest chose the steak and ale option. Both were extremely well prepared and good value for under £10 each.

The venue also has a decent specials board, which had more than a few intriguing options to mix up its already impressive menu.

In terms of desserts, there’s more than enough to satisfy the sweetest of tastes – we went for the Belgian waffles which

were a real treat and great way to round off the meal.

We hadn’t intended to stay for the quiz night – but we enjoyed our meal so much and really liked the atmosphere there, so we decided to play along with some friends.

WHEELIE FUN Racing wheelie bins may not seem an obvious event, but it’s proved a winner for fundraisers at the Three Horseshoes pub in Hernhill, near Faversham.

The colourful annual spectacle raised a total of £3,128 for charity, and included teams of four racing elaborately-decorated entries through the Kent village.

A total of 13 teams took part, with four members of Three Horseshoes staff gaining the prize for making it back to the pub in the fastest time; the ‘Fat Ballerinas’ were named Best Dressed; and the team who had come as ‘Buster’s Bar’ in honour of pub licensee Buster McDonnell, won the award for Best Bin. The race was followed by events at the venue including live music from the Leigh Highwood Band, a barbecue, auction and raffle.

Buster said: “It was the best day ever! The sun shone, we had a great number of teams, and a massive turnout of spectators. We would like to thank everyone who supported the event and gave so generously. We will be giving the money to Pilgrims Hospices in Canterbury.”

A

city centre’s atmosphere is only ever as vibrant as the businesses, culture and communities that it attracts and fosters within its core areas. Thankfully, Canterbury has been richly blessed with both an enviable heritage and a broad range of independent traders lending it incredible character.

The King’s Mile is no exception, with its eclectic mix of companies spanning everything from luxury jewellers, cafes and boutiques, to an exotic pet store offering a distinct contrast to the major chain retailers dominating the high street.

Its continued development has been underlined by a public survey from Canterbury City Council in 2013 rating it as customers’ “favourite area to shop”.

There has clearly been an undoubted boost by a two-phased improvement plan aimed at reviving street scenes to ensure The King’s Mile remains an attractive prospect for visitors. The works’ first stage was completed in 2008.

Seven years on, the city shows tangible

signs of emerging from an economic downturn with a further £500,000 investment being been made by the City Council.

As part of this second phase, which focused on Northgate and The Borough, there have been improvements to pedestrian areas. This has included installing new plant holders and replacing ageing street furniture, as well as placing a striking series of flags defining The King’s Mile in its key location near Canterbury Cathedral.

In celebration of the works’ completion, there will be a host of activities on Saturday, 12th September.

Among the highlights will be live music at the Jolly Sailor and a preview of the Play Me I’m Yours art installation which has become a global phenomenon in which visitors will have the chance to have a go on a specially-installed decorated piano strategically set up in the street.

There will be competitions, free tasters and giveaways, plus children’s entertainment at the Alfa Romeo garage.

Having been financed through developers’ planning consent contributions to the City Council, the street improvements also include creating new parking bays to enhance facilities for shoppers and traders.

Its other measures have included narrowing roads to allow only single way traffic to encourage greater pedestrian and cycling use, as well as widening a footway on one side. This broadens out at the junction of Palace Street and The Borough to enable delivery HGVs to access stores.

According to jeweller Ortwin Thyssen, who owns a store in Palace Street and is also the Chairman of The King’s Mile Association, the combined works have made a major impact in terms of increasing levels of trade.

While he concedes there has been short-term disruption for businesses as the scheme progressed, he believed the initial inconvenience had been necessary in order to deliver longer-term benefits.

He enthused: “It has been almost like a miracle how things have transformed since

“There has been some narrowing of the street and lowering of curbs so that the atmosphere is more open and friendlier for pedestrians, which has meant people are browsing a lot more now.”

After the German-born jeweller settled in the UK with his wife Dorothee more than a decade ago, he says basing himself in the King’s Mile in 2006 has proved a rewarding move.

His company, which specialises in bespoke Mokume Gane wood grained techniques, is staffed by a team of more than five highly-skilled craftspeople.

Mr Thyssen explained the second phase of the improvement works have been carried out with the support of Canterbury’s Business Improvement District (BID) team, as a co-ordinated effort to raise the profile of the area.

He added: “People know about the King’s Mile now as it’s a recognisable area of creative businesses serving the community.

It’s a friendly place that has a really good group of businesses working together.

something special to promote themselves as well.“ Sharing his optimism, Sarah Wharton of 925 in Palace Street, said the overall measures taken have had a positive influence over the past few years. “There’s a noticeable difference from when we were first here around 13 years ago. There are more people shopping since they’ve widened the pavements,” adding: “It’s a nicer place to shop now where we are and the same will happen with Northgate and it is great to see these improvements being made.”

She added that there were other positive developments such as introducing car parking bays, which added to the offering for customers.

Ian Crowther, owner of Crowthers of Canterbury music specialists, believed the street improvements had been a real success. “Where we are there has been an improvement to the paving. It has been very positive from my point of view. Over the past 10 days since it has been completed we have seen more tourists here and people walking through the streets.

“While there has been some disruption during the work, everyone just wanted to see the end product. I think it has made

a vast difference to the amount of time people are spending in King’s Mile.

“Our business has been steady, and as we are quite specialist, people come from quite a distance to see us anyway. I’ve been here in Canterbury for 26 years, and at the present shop since 2006,” explained the trader who is an oboe player and also manages the Festival Chamber Orchestra in Canterbury.

As she explained, working with her business partner Laaroussi Sidat to grow the business has proved a rewarding challenge.

She revealed that footfall had improved since the works had been completed, with levels of awareness about their company steadily increasing.

Anna, who also works as a lecturer in Kent, said: “Although we are a new business, it seems like there are now more tourists coming here since the work has been done.

“People who have found us here have said that it is great – they have come from all over the place including Morocco – who have said how much our shop reminds them of their home.

“Laaroussi who manages the store had previously worked in a business in Brighton’s Lanes and we wanted to create something that was a little like that. He has sourced our products from several locations in Morocco that are of good quality and complement several Moroccan restaurants in the area.”

the area had noticeably improved following the second phase completion. He said a number of businesses had felt a lot more confident with improvements to pavements and the overall street scene – such as cafes and restaurants feeling able to place tables outside their venues to make best use of available space for their ventures.

Mr Blackmore added: “This has definitely been an improvement for The King’s Mile with the introduction of new banners and street furniture. Business is

good at the moment, as is the economy in general.”

With significant investment having been placed in The King’s Mile, and its wide range of companies reporting buoyant trading conditions, the area’s reputation as one of the city’s real gems looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.

F

rom hosting annual festivities marking its nautical and agricultural heritage, to an extravaganza championing dapper headwear – Faversham has clearly punched above its weight in staging celebrations.

September continues this trend in fine style with the return of the town’s much-anticipated Hop Festival, marking its 26th year at the heart of the area’s events calendar. Its vibrant mix of rising musical talent, traditional street entertainment and wealth of fine ale have ensured crowds of more than 35,000 each year.

This key Kentish occasion, which is revived in its usual slot of the first weekend of the month, will set the scene for further celebrations with Faversham’s debut Food Festival taking place between 18th and 20th September.

Having taken over as director of the widely celebrated hop celebration last year, David Thompson says it has proved a significant, yet rewarding challenge. Not least of his tasks comes in co-ordinating the logistics for the three-day celebration – which will effectively see the population of the town double over the weekend.

As he explains, there have been measures to ensure the programme will have as broad appeal as possible, including the return of the event’s mascot in the form of chipper character Harry the Hop to lend some added fun.

The recently-introduced family area will also be extended for this year’s

festival, which will feature performances from a total of more than 50 bands. This includes a Shepherd Neame stage hosting performances from local folk favourites including Green Diesel and rock and pop covers act Paragraph 1.

The brewery will also be hosting a free exhibition on the history of hop picking in Kent – of which Faversham has played a significant role.

As part of the event, there will be the chance to see some of the brewery’s vintage vehicles, catch films detailing traditional harvest gathering, as well as plenty of opportunities to sample a selection of some of the area’s most renowned ales.

There will also be a wealth of entertainment spanning magic shows, circus workshops and parades, to around 60 traders displaying some of Kent’s finest fare.

“This is the festival’s 26th year and it really is unique,” enthuses its Director David, who is also the landlord of The Vaults pub and restaurant in Preston Street.

He added: “We try and showcase as much local talent as we can, offering a

variety of entertainment, food and drink which attracts people from all around the world.

“There will also be a focus on local craft as well, which will be one of the key themes of the event. We had to move the dates last year due to rail engineering works, but we have made an agreement with Southeastern rail for the next three years over the timing – as around 70% of people will be coming by train.

“Kent has traditionally been one of the big hop production places in the world, and in the last few years there have been a number of new microbreweries crop up in the county. This has seen new hop fields being planted.”

The director explained this year’s event would feature even more stalls than ever.

He hoped it could draw one of its highest attendances of around 40,000 people, with music across five different stages.

Shepherd Neame’s Visitor Centre Manager, Graham Hukins, added: “Faversham Hop Festival is a glorious way of celebrating our town’s special heritage, and

we are delighted to support the event. We have deliberately selected an eclectic mix of musicians for the brewery stage, so there will really be something for everyone.”

Meanwhile, there has been a growing level of anticipation surrounding the inaugural Faversham Food Festival.

According to one of its organisers, David Selves, Landlord of the Phoenix Tavern in Faversham, a run of smaller events last year proved successful and paved the way for a combined showcase of the area’s culinary delights.

So far, he explained that more than 35 traders had expressed an interest in playing a part in the festival, which the organising team hope will become one of the region’s strongest of its kind, focusing firmly on local cuisine.

Among the highlights will be the Friday Night Fish on the Quay event on Friday, 18th September, in which Hollowshore Fisheries land fresh fish on the high tide to be sold on the quayside alongside a special barbecue and accompanied with live music.

The following day, there will be a series of food and drink tasting sessions

throughout the town, rounded off by a Sunday lunch in Faversham finale, in which a number of venues will each serve a festival dish to accompany their standard menus.

As David adds, the Good Food Guide had identified an “East Kent triangle” of food excellence, with the area gaining a global profile for the quality of its produce.

In his opinion, this was in no small way down to the town having one of the oldest markets in the county, and the fact Faversham produces fare as diverse as its ale industry led by Britain’s oldest brewer Shepherd Neame, to the apples and pears of the national fruit collection at Brogdale, as well as the town’s oysters.

“While the latter may be much lesser known than their Whitstable equivalents, they are reportedly largely destined straight for top London restaurants.

Recalling the inspiration for the event, David revealed it had sprung from an informal chat with Professor Harold Goodwin, a lecturer on sustainable tourism, that it would be a good idea for Faversham to build a festival to rival that of Ludlow, in Shropshire, which has

been regarded as one of the UK’s leading regional ‘foodie’ centres.

He said: “Last year we tried it out with four mini festivals including ones for asparagus, fish, and soft fruit. Those who came last year loved these events.

“I’m hoping we’ll get thousands of people coming to Faversham including for the 2015 Sausage Trail, with venues in the town producing their own sausages that everyone will have the chance to vote on to find a winner. There will also be an expert’s choice category as well.

“The whole point of the festival is to promote Faversham which is part of the East Kent food triangle. We want to make the area a focus of attention for its produce.”

questions As it will be one of the most expensive events in your life, make sure you ask all the right questions before you make your wedding bookings to ensure you get the day you’ve always dreamed of

Arguably the venue is the first booking you will make and the size of the wedding you are planning is vital here – you need to find out if venues can accommodate all of your guests and whether there is a minimum number required in order to have the entire venue or only certain rooms/areas.

Make sure to ask if there will be any other events taking place on the same day and if there are any restrictions on where you can have photographs taken.

Find out about your options regarding food – for example do they have in-house caterers and is there a charge if you want to bring in your own?

Accommodation is another key consideration, so ask if there is any for you and your guests if needed – and if there is somewhere for you to get ready on the day, as this will affect your transport requirements.

Check the venue can accommodate any other requirements you have such as a band, marquee or even fireworks if you want the day to go off with a bang!

Your fl orist Most importantly ask if you can see examples of other wedding work they have done. Other key questions include: Are they able to get the types of flowers you want for the time of year of your wedding? Will they be delivered to the venue or do you need to collect them? Will they come and 44

dress the venue – and is your venue within their travel range?

To keep your displays looking perfect, ask what care the flowers need during the day and whether the bouquet needs to rest in water occasionally to keep it at its best.

If you want to save your bouquet after the event by having it dried, find out if they can provide an alternative bridal bouquet so you don’t have to throw yours and whether they can provide the drying service for you.

Your cake This is where you can have a bit of fun as you will need to have tastings to find the right cake – but check if this will cost any extra! Ask to see examples of cake-makers’ work and whether they have designs to choose from or if they offer a bespoke cake making service.

To cater for all your guests, see if you can mix and match sponge flavours across layers – and if you are having several layers or cup cakes ask if they will assemble the cake at the venue or if you need to pick it up, and also whether they supply a stand or if this is an additional cost?

Your wedding planner If you decide to get a little extra help, some key questions to finding the right wedding planner for you will include: How many other weddings do they have on around the same time? What falls under their remit?

Your dressmaker Considered to be the most exciting part of planning your wedding, looking for that perfect dress will leave you with endless options. Depending on your budget find out if the dressmakers you visit have set designs or if they can make something more bespoke for you.

Timing is important, so ask how long will it take to make. Financially, you will need to find out how many fittings are included in the price and whether that also applies to the bridesmaids’ dresses and any alternations that may be needed.

Practicalities include finding out if they will store the dress for you or whether you need to collect it as soon as it is ready, and what you need to take along to fittings with you.

Your photographer/ videographer It is important to find the right person to capture your day as they are responsible for the lasting images you will have.

As there are now plenty of new ways to capture the day see if they offer any other services such as photobooths or video messages. Also find out how will they supply the pictures for you to look at afterwards – CD, hard copies, online – and how long it will be before the pictures are ready to look at/order.

Your entertainment Once the ceremony and dinner is over, to make it a night to remember you will need to find the entertainment that will make your big day complete.

If you opt for a DJ ask if they have the style and playlist you require and whether they provide any other services such as lighting effects, as well as finding out how much space will they need. If you choose to hire a band make sure you can hear them play before you book them and request a CD you can listen to. If they are playing sets find out whether they provide music between them or if you need to organise this, as well as how long will they play for. It is also worth considering whether the band need somewhere to get ready at the venue.

Exploring Canterbury’s all new The Chair After 12 years in its 16th century Grade II listed location in Canterbury’s The Borough, The Chair Hair and Beauty Salon had started to outgrow the building, so when the opportunity arose to purchase next door, owner Katie Hopkins jumped at the chance You have seen some big changes this year, how have they come about?

Yes, it’s been amazing. Not only has The Chair been growing busier and busier I have been fortunate to be able to purchase and expand to the stunning property next door.

We now have more than 36 salon positions, making it the largest hair and beauty salon in the City.

It has been a challenging project, running the business as well as overseeing the build, but it has been well worth it. In fact the new site dates back to the 13th century and has beautiful vaulted ceilings, an original York Stone floor and a bread oven!

When planning the new salon I really wanted to enhance the incredible features of this historic building and ensure we retained as much of the open planned nature as we could. I am delighted with the results and know our customers will be too.

You seem to have a lot to offer compared to your typical hairdresser?

We think we offer something special and are hugely proud of our stylist Chelsea, who recently achieved the L’Oreal Young Colourist Award for 48

2015. Amazing! We’re very lucky to have this amazing space and to be able to host five stylish beauty treatment rooms called Borough Beauty, run by Emma Phillips.

What are your future plans?

Although we have only just finished the salon revamp and added new beauty rooms, next I am planning to create a stylish garden area where clients can relax when waiting or during treatments if they wish – weather dependent!

Through The King’s Mile and alongside the King’s School entrance, The Borough area has also recently seen some major improvements, making it just a lovely environment and place to visit. There are so many interesting shops and restaurants – we’re proud to be a part of it.

I have been a beautician for more than 15 years and am passionate about training and learning the latest treatments. With high ambitions, six years ago I decided to freelance and see what I could achieve.

In 2013 the opportunity arose to take a treatment room at The Chair. Being the most luxurious salon in Canterbury I jumped at the opportunity. I have been expanding and growing my business there ever since.

The all new The Chair, where I now have five luxury rooms, has really accelerated our success and allows me to offer a treatment salon with the best products and highly qualified therapists.

We are also so busy with clients keen to look their best for all their celebrations. I love it when the salon is filled to the brim, everyone excited, planning and looking forward to spending time with their loved ones.

I see you use Environ, a special skincare product – what makes it so good?

Through all my research into skincare products I wanted to offer a product which is result driven, and Environ was just that.

What treatment is the most popular?

Waxing. We offer perhaps the least painful experience using Lycon. It can remove hair as short as 1mm and is so kind to the skin you leave with no irritation or redness. We use an oil to protect the skin and then the wax just shrink wraps around the hair so that it is all that is coming off.

It is extremely hygienic and once you experience a Lycon hot wax you will never put yourself through strip waxing again!

Lions enjoy Roaring Cycle Ride A dozen former British and Irish Rugby Lions – and supermodel Jodie Kidd – were among a group of 100 cyclists to enjoy lunch at Shepherd Neame when they stopped off at the brewery while completing the Ride Of The Lions Waterloo 200, a 200-mile charity cycle ride to mark the 200th anniversary of the historic battle.

The cyclists departed from Waterloo, just south of Brussels, and crossed the Channel at Dunkirk before staying overnight in Dover. They were joined by Shepherd Neame Chief Executive Jonathan Neame, and cycled to Faversham for lunch at the brewery, before travelling to finish their journey at St James’s Square in London. Walking With The Wounded are the principal charity partner for the ride.

LADIES DAY The ladies of Broome Park Golf Club in Canterbury were winners when they played a Stableford round of golf, hosted by the Lady Captain Betty Martin.

Before the golfing action got underway, the players were presented with a special goody bag to mark the occasion.

At the halfway point of the game, Betty and John Martin served Pimm’s and nibbles to

keep the golfers in good spirits and, as it turned out, producing some good scores. After the golf, the players enjoyed a delightful lunch in the Jacobean restaurant, followed by prize-giving.

The winner was Elaine Wilcox, second place was Mary Boag with 39 points, third place went to Sue Tizzard with 38 points, and fourth place, after count back, went to Anne Fido with 37 points from Sue Shepherd, also with 37 points who took fifth place.

Soaking up spongeware From its humble beginnings as cheap and cheerful pottery, antique spongeware is now highly sought-after for its simplistic charm Words and photographs Jennie Buist Brown

N

owadays antique spongeware is highly sought-after by collectors but when it was originally made it was considered cheap and cheerful, and when broken or cracked was simply disposed of, meaning that today it is fairly rare and so can command high prices.

During the 19th century when spongeware became popular, young, unskilled girls were taught how to print on biscuit ware using cut sponges attached to wooden handles. The sponge was in fact the “root” of a sea sponge that had been cut into shape. Of course a sponge is an animal and doesn’t really have a root but this was the word used to describe the hardest part of the sponge – the part of the animal that fixes to the rock.

This part is always removed from the sponge when it is sold commercially. The girls would then sit in front of a turntable and apply the simple patterns of stars, florets, leaves and other basic designs.

At the time, spongeware was considered to be cheap and coarse – it was often given away as fairground prizes, hawked round the countryside by travelling peddlers and even exchanged in cities for old, unwanted goods by rag and bone

men. Very few samples of spongeware are marked as it was the cheapest of wares and not considered worth marking. In fact some potteries were so ashamed of their spongeware output that they didn’t want it to be known that they had produced anything quite so basic. Also, as the people who used spongeware were fairly poor they were very unlikely ever to be in a financial position to order replacements.

Spongeware was often a lifesaver when the potteries were short of orders and producing these simply-made pieces filled the gap nicely. It became somewhat of a cottage industry carried out by women and children working at their kitchen tables.

Throughout the 19th century, and up until around 1930, spongeware was produced not only in the UK but also in much of Europe as well as Russia, Japan and the USA. Also, because both Britain and Holland had large empires during this time, spongeware can still be found in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, India,

Malaysia and Indonesia. In fact some of the nicest pieces were made for the colonies – large shallow rice dishes being a particular favourite of mine.

Key potteries making spongeware included Llanelly in South Wales and David Methven & Sons in Kirkcaldy, as well as George Jones and WM Adams & Co in England. Because it was cheap to buy it would be in everyday use in the home, often kept on the stove meaning that scorch marks and blackening was not unusual. Nowadays it is quite hard to find pieces without some damage.

Being Scottish, I have a particular soft spot for the spongeware produced in Fife, where I grew up, and have been able to build a collection of Methven spongeware that unlike a lot of spongeware is often marked.

Prices vary of course depending on where you are buying, but expect to pay upwards of £40 for a small piece such as a mug or bowl. Larger, rarer pieces, including patriotic pieces depicting soldiers or First World War slogans, can cost more than £200.

Modern day collectables Thirty years ago Emma Bridgewater set up a kiln in her Brixton bathroom and started experimenting with the forgotten decorative technique of sponge printing – applying simple patterns with a cut sponge. She showed these samples to a selection of buyers – almost all placed orders – and Emma Bridgewater pottery was born.

Now the company has a turnover of around £11 million and is one of the biggest employers of potters in 68

Collaboration in a competitive world In a world where schools are constantly scrutinised and relentlessly measured for achievement, two Canterbury schools have joined forces to do something unique.

Four years ago the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys (SLGSB) and Canterbury Academy, traditionally offering very different educational experiences, recognised that they could learn from each other. Not only have they collaborated on an academy for rugby, a ‘Langton Stream’ at Canterbury Academy has been introduced, which at the start of the new term will be teaching a predominantly grammar school curriculum to 350 students.

Subjects include maths, science, English, MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) and humanities. Students receive the same assessments as those at the selective school, which also monitors performance.

Phil Karnavas, Executive Principal of the Academy Trust, believes that the selective education system can, and does, cause damage to children, families and the community, saying: “It cannot be right that the presumed success of the few depends on the actual failure of the many aged 10 or 11, and the expansion of grammar school numbers is at the expense of secondary modern schools where life is already difficult. However, the partnership between ourselves and Simon Langton Boys’ breaks this mould.”

Joining forces Tim Fox, Senior Vice Principal at the Boys’ Grammar is delighted to be commencing a secondment at Canterbury Academy.

“Until now we teachers have shared ideas but taught separately,” he says. “This year eight of our staff will deliver part of the Academy A-level curriculum. We also plan regular enrichment activities designed to The Canterbury INDEX www.indexmagazine.co.uk

extend pupils – for example, John Young from South East News led a Media Day for 15 pupils from each school, and we also created a challenging project with DNA. The pupils are mixing brilliantly. They start clustered together very aware of their different uniforms; in 10 minutes you would not tell the difference.”

Ken Moffat, Head of School at SLGSB, believes that the scheme, which has had county support, is unique in the country. With the current available Canterbury education consisting of grammar, faith, private or secondary modern establishments, he believes that the new arrangement creates a genuinely comprehensive education. “It’s really exciting, and brilliant to see how all teachers have interacted and accepted each other,” he says. “Overall the benefit to Canterbury is the standard of education.”

Although it is becoming familiar to hear of schools being taken over by private academies, both establishments believe they are demonstrating that a city or region

can sort out difficulties without outside interference or penalisation. “Schools have been thrust into a competitive environment against their will, which the public doesn’t always understand,” says Mr Moffat.

“We are working together in a genuinely altruistic sense to increase standards. Canterbury has already lost a school. We want to find Canterbury solutions to Canterbury problems.”

The project appears to be showing benefits. Applications to Canterbury Academy have increased from 210 to 780 – and data analysis indicates that the progress of their Year 6 pupils accepted into the stream make four times the progress of those attending SLGSB. “The partnership means that The Canterbury Academy can now offer the children and parents who want it a genuine comprehensive alternative,” says Mr Karnavas. “The children in both are offered greater diversity of experience and staff working together offer professional development and support. This gives the city an unrivalled range of opportunity.”

Whitefriars water clock commissioned The new Whitefriars water clock, designed by students from Canterbury’s Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys, has been formally commissioned.

During the spring and summer of 2015, a team of Year 12 students from the school was tasked with developing a water clock for Whitefriars – part of the shopping centre’s contribution towards Canterbury in Bloom.

Daniel Pledger, Simon Langton’s Subject Leader – Product Design and Engineering, said: “The first challenge was to decide on a workable design. The team immediately observed an interesting contrast between Whitefriars and the wider city centre. The wealth of old buildings gives Canterbury a very traditional feel, whereas the sleek, glass-fronted stores and pristine buildings in Whitefriars offer an alternative perspective to the city.

“After considering a range of approaches for the main body of the clock, the student team developed a unique design in stainless steel, bronze and brass that is both contemporary and traditional.

After sketching out their initial ideas, they used computer-aided design (CAD) software to detail all the parts.”

The Whitefriars water clock mechanism is powered by electricity with advanced circuitry to ensure it keeps accurate time.

Water cascades down the front of the clock and flows into copper ‘buckets’ mounted on the ring on the outside of the clock face, causing it to rotate. The buckets empty into a trough on the underside of the clock and the water is then pumped up to the top to flow back through the clock again.

Whitefriars Marketing Manager, Julie Holness, said: “The clock is a beautiful new addition to Whitefriars Square and is already attracting a lot of interest from shoppers.”

Kent College hosted a rousing day of music making, when 70 young musicians came together for its annual Orchestral Festival. The large orchestra was made up of pupils from Blean Primary School, Luddenham Primary School, Lorenden Preparatory School and Kent College Junior School.

Overall student satisfaction rises to a record high Overall student satisfaction at Canterbury Christ Church University continues to rise, according to the recently published National Student Survey (NSS).

For a third consecutive year the University has recorded its highest ever overall student satisfaction level, at 87%, with improvements in other NSS categories also recorded.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rama Thirunamachandran, said: “We are delighted to see that our overall student satisfaction level continues to reach a record high for a

third year. These results are testament to the hard work of our staff across the University, who create an experience that is positive and inclusive for all of our students.

New season – and series – of public lectures

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF WATER Primary school children across the Canterbury district are to receive free copies of a new book on water thanks to generous sponsorship from the Whitefriars shopping centre.

Water World has been produced by award-winning local author Martyn Barr as part of the shopping centre’s contribution towards Canterbury in Bloom 2015. The 56-page softback book is presented with more than 60 stunning photographs, articles, infographics and facts highlighting all the many facets of water, including weather, erosion, rivers, oceans, plants, transport, treatment, pollution and the human body.

The challenge of providing adequate supplies of clean water in developing countries, as well as

the importance of using water wisely in the home and garden, are also covered.

A separate Teachers’ Resource Guide to accompany Water World is available for free download, with links to useful information sources and lots of ideas for classroom activities centred on water. There are also features on the River Stour, the Abbot’s Mill project and the Whitefriars water clock, which has been designed by Year 12 students from Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys.

Toasting exam success An ISI inspection earlier this year recognised academic excellence at Kent College, Canterbury. As A-level results were published at the time of going to press, Kent College students and staff are celebrating the school’s best ever year for UCAS points (the basis for university offers) with an average of more than 400 per student: the equivalent of A* A* A. There was also a 100% pass rate at A-level, and all students gained places at their universities of choice including Oxbridge.

These results follow IB outcomes, which were again excellent. A much larger cohort followed the Diploma programme this year and the average points score achieved is equivalent to four grade As at A-level.

Head Master, Dr David Lamper, said: “I am delighted with the very high levels of academic achievement shown by the students who took examinations this summer. They worked extremely hard whilst at the same time adding an immense amount to the extra curricular, musical, dramatic and sporting life of our community.

Canterbury Christ Church University’s new season of free public lectures will explore some of the critical issues currently facing societies and governments around the world.

From the role of human rights in a post 9/11 world order, racism and fundamentalism in a democratic education, environmental global business, the role of museums in society and involving children in environmental issues, the series promises to be diverse and thought-provoking.

The exciting programme of talks starts on Friday, 25th September when former Children’s Laureate, acclaimed novelist and Honorary Doctorate Michael Morpurgo is welcomed back to the University to present his lecture, The Best of All Possible Worlds, in which he will explore the subject of writing about the environment for children.

At the end of September Dr Ted Malloch, Professor and Fellow in Management Practice at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, will argue in his talk, A Responsible Way to Reorient Global Business, that we have a responsibility to care for all of the resources that we have been given for the sake of future generations.

Then in November Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty, the UK’s leading civil rights organisation, will maintain that our fundamental rights and freedoms are indispensable, regardless of the pressures they are under today. Drawing upon her own work in high-profile campaigns, from privacy laws to anti-terror legislation, her talk, On Liberty, will expand upon the threats to our democratic institutions and why our rights are paramount in upholding democracy.

Every day brings troubling news about the Islamic State and of young people seduced by the idea of Jihad, as well as racism on the rise. Professor of Education at Canterbury Christ Church University, Linden West, will offer us an insight into his work, speaking on Racism, Fundamentalism and a Democratic Education: A Challenge for Us All. The final lecture takes place at the beginning of March and the University is delighted to welcome back Honorary Doctorate Gillian Wolfe, Director of Learning and Public Affairs at Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Creating a visitor experience The Kent Mining Museum, being built on the site of the former Betteshanger Colliery in East Kent, has appointed a specialist exhibition design consultancy to drive the project.

Designmap, which has offices in Margate, is a multidisciplinary consultancy which has worked with English Heritage and Dover Castle, the Natural History Museum, Westminster Abbey and The National Trust.

The new museum, which is due next summer, gained a £215,000 heritage lottery grant and is part of the Betteshanger Sustainable Parks project being led by Hadlow College.

A STORY OF FARMING DIVERSIFICATION As farmers next door we were able to purchase Evegate in 1980. After creating a farm shop in the first year of operation, we looked at the potential of converting some of the semi-derelict buildings into potential retail units to complement our farm shop.

Later we were fortunate to be able to acquire the old tannery, a listed building in Ashford which we re-erected at Evegate in 1990, creating some 15 individual offices. Even today I still marvel at the timber inside the old building.

Two years ago Ashford Council gave us the chance to radically alter the appearance of Evegate.

After 35 years I can begin to see my lifetime dream achieving fruition, that of a business village where all different trades can work together interactively. By next spring, there should be a very diverse and stimulating group of more than 50 businesses working within a village environment.

We need to make sure that what we have is enough for what the district needs, and that it gets used as efficiently as possible.

Parking affects all businesses – from retailers and our tourist businesses, to those that need to use the stations and the high-speed link.

Canterbury Council has changed back to operating under a committee system – will this improve delivery of services?

It should do. The committee system means that all councillors can be more involved in deciding how we do things and bring their ideas to the table. We need to be more creative in how we deliver our services with less money and the committee system should help this. The other key is making sure that we talk to residents about how we do things. Councillors have no monopoly on good ideas and the local knowledge residents bring is invaluable.

What do you most value beyond work?

Family without a question. My free time has suddenly evaporated and it’s a constant struggle to make time to spend with my wife and daughter. But that’s really important – if it wasn’t for their support, I wouldn’t be able to be a councillor let alone leader.

Is Manston really the solution to Operation Stack?

Operation Stack has continued to cause mayhem on Kent’s roads this summer – and now major concerns have been raised over controversial plans for Manston airfield’s proposed use as a temporary lorry park to tackle the road chaos caused.

Neill Barston examines whether a solution is any closer

B

usinesses and residents across Kent have been left dismayed by six weeks of summer M20 gridlock – caused by disruption to cross Channel services amid French industrial strikes at Calais and ferry operator disputes.

Added into this unwelcome cocktail of transport tension has been the politically topical issue of increasingly desperate migrants in France attempting to break down Channel Tunnel security. This has significantly complicated a problem that has blighted the county for more than a decade.

According to Tim Waggott, Chief Executive of the Port of Dover, Operation Stack has cost the UK economy £250 million every day it has been put in place affecting more than 4,000 heavy goods vehicles.

Companies within Kent relying on rapid transit of their goods, residents and tourists alike have all been hit equally hard by the situation – which appears no clearer to being resolved on a permanent basis.

Repeated attempts to build lorry parks in East Kent have faced persistent objections.

The huge dilemma comes as Dover’s port has marked its most successful year, with 2.4 million heavy goods vehicles carrying around £100 billion through its docks.

As a result, the Department for Transport (DfT) has been urged by the industry to find a solution. It has struck a deal with the owners of Manston airfield to temporarily permit lorries to be diverted to the site under Operation Stack. However, the move prompted disbelief from residents 78

and business over the lack of consultation on the issue – with fears expressed that using Manston would merely spread the traffic to the M2 and in fact make the problem worse.

Underlining this, John Allan, Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, has said “the strength of feeling from small businesses on this was at an all-time high”.

The cost of Operation Stack also extends to the drain on police resources – with the county’s Crime Commissioner Ann Barnes calling on the government to foot the £700,000 bill that officers have been lumbered with from implementing the deeply unpopular traffic measure.

Speaking to INDEX magazine, Thanet North MP Sir Roger Gale has expressed his concern at the plan, which he believed was in completely the wrong location.

Crucially, the MP said an alternative proposal backed by Dover Harbour Board which would have seen the A2 close to Dover being used as an alternative to piling up lorries on the M20, was not considered by the Department for Transport.

“I believe this to be a profoundly bad and impractical proposal. You do not solve a problem by moving it from A to B, which is effectively what the Leader of Kent County Council and the Highways Agency are seeking to do,” said Sir Roger.

“To divert traffic across country roads at the height of the tourist season across 20 miles of Kent’s highways is, I believe, quite wrong when there are other alternatives

such as the park at Ebbsfleet and Kent County Showground, which lies between the M20 and the M2, available.”

In response, Ray Mallon, Spokesperson for Manston’s new owners – who have just renamed the site Stone Hill Park and intend it to become a mixed used business site with additional housing – confirmed the measure was temporary, after signalling in July that the site might be suitable for use.

Kent Police’s Deputy Chief Constable Paul Brandon welcomed the measure, saying: “We have been in a critical situation in Kent since the middle of June and, in that time the situation in Kent has been acknowledged as a very real, national issue.

“Following work by the Department for Transport and Highways England, the option to divert freight bound for Europe to Manston Airfield, whilst very challenging, has become more feasible in terms of resourcing and logistics.”

A spokesperson for Highways England was unable to confirm how long Manston Airfield might be used as a temporary park for Operation Stack, saying: “Manston has been identified as suitable for the shortterm and is there as a back-up. But we are working with all our partners including Kent County Council and Kent Police to find a permanent solution for Operation Stack.”

With no timetable established for a permanent solution, it appears Stack – which was first trialled way back in 1988, may unfortunately be here for a significant while longer.

CRIPPS CHARITY CHEQUE HANDOVER Children and young people with significant social, emotional and behavioural difficulties are benefitting from a series of fun charity events organised by law firm Cripps which raised almost £9,000.

The charity provides residential care for up to 50 children and young people aged five to 18 who have suffered severe neglect and trauma in the early stages of life.

Keeping a list on your

listed property

If you are renovating or converting your listed building, the process can sometimes seem rather overwhelming and the detail and research that goes into altering a listed building is no easy undertaking…

id you know there are nearly 500,000 listed properties in the UK? And, more often than not, if you own one of these listed properties you will have, at some point, renovated or undertaken a major project on it.

The Listed Property Owners Club (www. lpoc.co.uk) help and advise many owners on a day-to-day basis as they take on these works, and one thing that stands out is the usefulness of documenting the procedure – and remember, this isn’t always limited to listed properties but any property project! So to assist in this process, here are top tips to help document your next property challenge.

Take photos – and lots of them!

It sounds obvious, but you would be amazed at how many people forget to. Taking pictures at every stage of the project, particularly before you start any work, is one of the most useful ways to document it. Looking back at the photographs allows you to see how far the project has progressed. Images can also be taken along to meetings with conservation

officers, architects and other professionals involved in the project. Should you wish to sell the house in future, a catalogue of images will become part of the house’s history and can be passed on for the next custodian to enjoy as part of their ownership.

Budget One of the most common issues encountered with a property project is unplanned costs. Budgeting for a project on your listed building is essential, as costs can easily get out of control. When putting together a budget, source a range of quotes for the work involved, so you can account for a best and worst case scenario. You can talk through your budget with suppliers and architects for support. Note every detail, and refer back to it regularly.

Ask your neighbours Your neighbours are a good starting point for information. They may have previously looked into the history of your street or

area, and their own house history. As well as helpful tips on their own experiences of local tradesman, they may also have some useful information they can pass on about the area you live in, local historians, architects, and dealing with the conservation officer.

House history Understanding your house history is important before moving forward with any plans. Discovering your home’s antiquity is growing in popularity as investing in a listed home means buying into its past, stories and legacy. Looking at the home’s history can provide inspiration for your renovation or conversion. Start by looking into the title deeds and archives, but professional house historians can also help. There are great resources and help available for researching your property’s past, many of which can be found in LPOC’s Supplier’s Directory.

With its abundance of independent shops, delightful cafes and historical character, the medieval town of Sandwich is a charming place to live or visit. So which of its lucky residents wouldn’t want a little extra room to have family and friends to stay?

Time At the beginning of the project you will have a time scale set out for the works completion. In order to stay on track with the original time scale, document how long each part of the project takes and any reasons for delays. It will be easier to re-estimate a finish date and make up for time.

Suppliers Finding the right suppliers of traditional products and methods suitable for your home’s needs is essential to a successful renovation or conversion. Suppliers who have provided a great service may be needed again in the future, so it is recommended to keep records of which suppliers contributed to the work, the costs, and their details. Another building owner with similar requirements may also need their services, and recommending good suppliers online through reviews will help their own research.

Keep a diary Keeping a diary of your experience is a great way to document your project, and an outlet for your achievements, frustrations and progress. A diary allows you to also have an accurate record of when certain parts of the project took place. Should the work go on for a number of years this can be a useful referencing guide to refer to. A diary also serves as a way of documenting the memories of your experience to have something to look back at when the project is over. Many owners now chose to keep an online diary via a blog or website, which enables their experiences to be shared.

by Eric Pickles on 25th March, that the government would “further consider the case for extending the office-to-residential reforms”, shed no further light on the situation. And, the latest update delivered in the Town and Country Planning

The fact that we now have a different government means that all hope may not yet be lost. Many are nervous that they won’t be able to complete conversion schemes and begin residential use in time.

There are also many questions around how they prove that the residential use has begun if schemes aren’t fully completed by the deadline.

All these factors are also impacting the market for pre-approved sites and the values associated with them, and if schemes are put in doubt then there may well be a knock-on effect in terms of muchneeded housing coming to the market.

Short vs. long term investment?

Bespoke bathrooms T he moody and mysterious look carries through into the bathroom to an extent this season too. s insurance boring? Perhaps. Until you need to claim. Then, insurance suddenly becomes vitally important and most people wish they had paid more attention to it. Last year there were an estimated 11,000 incidents of loss or damage to UK gardens and, on average, the cost of these to the household amounted to £1,169 each.

With the hot periods that we have enjoyed over the summer it’s no surprise that sales of barbecues were up this year compared to last, and the same applied to garden furniture. But did you know that many insurance policies do not offer protection for your garden or the items you keep within it?

John Lewis, for example, offers up to £5,000 worth of cover for contents in the garden, including plants, barbecues, ornaments, garden furniture and tools.

John Brady, Head of Insurance at John Lewis Home Insurance, said: “The garden is a natural extension of the home and, as such, it’s normal for people to assume that

it will be protected under their insurance.

Sadly the reality is that some policies will not actually give people that essential peace of mind. There is a tendency to undervalue the contents of a garden, from the plants and trees, to the contents of the shed and the outdoor furniture.”

Theft is one of the most common reasons, related to the garden, as to why people contacted their insurance provider last year. It is estimated that there are as many as 5,400 garden thefts each year.

Here are some top tips for protecting your garden: • Fix a good quality lock or padlock on the door of the shed, as well as any garden gates.

• Lock belongings in the shed overnight after use (i.e. barbecues, bicycles etc) as items left in the garden may not be covered for theft.

• Install automatic security lighting in the garden.

• A prickly hedge around the garden can act as a deterrent to would-be intruders.

4 THINGS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH 1. Harvest your fruit and vegetables – dig up any remaining potatoes, and pick autumn raspberries, apples, pears, medlars and quince.

2. Water your vegetable garden regularly in order to prevent disease such as Blossom End Rot on tomatoes and the splitting of root vegetables.

3. Sow green manure crops for the purpose of over-wintering bare patches of your vegetable plot.

4. Start planting your spring-flowering bulbs any time from now onwards.

eople shouldn’t worry that their wishes after death will be ignored in light of the recent much-publicised Court of Appeal decision which overturned a mother’s Will to provide for her disinherited daughter, says local law firm Cripps.

“The gist of most of the news coverage was that it is a ‘game changer’, rendering Wills redundant and taking away our right to leave our estates to whom we want – but

this is simply not the case,” said Myles McIntosh (pictured), Partner and Head of Private Client.

“We have had many calls from worried clients as, I am sure, have most solicitors. In this case, a mother left her estate to three animal welfare charities but the court decided that, because of the daughter’s specific circumstances and financial position, she should be given a certain sum to buy a house.

“In fact, nothing has changed and people shouldn’t worry. Since the 1970s the law has allowed that, given an alignment of a number of specific facts, it will intervene if

Louise added: “Contact the Elderly helps to combat loneliness and isolation by holding Sunday afternoon tea parties for the over-75s once a month. It is for those people who live at home alone with little or no contact from family and friends and who perhaps need some help getting out of the house. A few hours a month helps to make a lasting difference in easing their loneliness and encouraging them to get back in touch with their local community.”

A group of elderly residents enjoyed a performance of the musical Oklahoma! at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, thanks to volunteers from Contact the Elderly.

The residents are members of the Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable branch of Contact the Elderly, which was launched in December last year. It is a national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people.

The Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable group is co-ordinated by Val Prosser and Louise Mathias-Williams – both lawyers in the Elderly and Vulnerable Client Team at leading Kent law firm Furley Page – who organise monthly tea parties for the guests.

Local road race secures sponsorship Baileys Nissan announces renewed sponsorship for Whitstable 10K, plus September’s new reg and a date for your diary

Nissan dealership in Canterbury has signed up for another year sponsoring a major coastal road race. Baileys Nissan Canterbury, in Vauxhall Industrial Estate, has supported the Whitstable 10K since 2008, helping to turn it into one of the biggest running events in the region while raising thousands of pounds for local charities.

This year, more than 600 people pounded the streets with £1,000 being collected for the Demelza House Hospice Care for Children.

Now, Baileys Nissan has announced it is yet again sponsoring the popular event for 2016. Brian Smith, Dealer Principal at Baileys Nissan, said: “The race just keeps growing every year – it’s been a phenomenal success…We’re so glad to be associated with the race as it raises so much money

for worthy charities and organisations.”

The race – organised by the Canterbury Harriers on the first Bank Holiday in May – starts from the Waterfront Club in Beach Walk and goes out to Hampton Pier at Herne Bay. Roy Gooderson, Administration Officer at Canterbury Harriers, said: “Without a major sponsor like Baileys Nissan, we

September is one of the busiest times of the year for car sales as people switch their vehicles to be more suitable for autumn/winter (similar to the fashion seasons), and there is also the new number plate issued on Tuesday, 1st September. The age identifier for the new registration plate is 65, which replaces the March plate of 15. The September age identifier adds on 50 years each year to the current year.
