E

ight centuries before Mother Teresa, St. Francis of Assisi encouraged his followers to provide care for the poor. Once, when he came across a leper, Francis jumped down from his horse and kissed the leper’s hand. Having that sense of compassion for all people is a critical part in becoming that someone you were meant to be. Here, volunteering to help others just seems to be the natural thing to do. It’s a good thing, too, because in these times of increasing poverty, reduced budgets and cuts in government funding, a spirit of generosity is especially important. We strongly encourage student service because we see it as an indispensable trait in a truly educated person.

Be generous abroad Students have spent time away investing in American Sign Language with deaf children, volunteering in schools and clinics for the impoverished in Latin America, and working on translation projects abroad.

—Leah Kessler Bringing aid to India Leah Kessler spent her time at Saint Francis obsessed with business and missions work. As an International Business major, she was involved in applying business scenarios to other cultures and even spent her downtime on spring break mission trips and in clubs with a ministry focus.

Learn to share We believe that learning is for sharing. Students at Saint Francis are encouraged to aim their talents and knowledge toward the service of others. It’s common for Saint Francis students to tutor each other and to invest in helping others understand a path they’ve already walked. There is a spirit of charity and encouragement that engulfs the academic pursuits at Saint Francis.

Teaming up for Thomas Thomas is an energetic 8-year-old boy who is mostly blind and deaf.

Eager to help Thomas better connect with the world around him, SFU Education and Chemistry majors teamed up to create 3D-printed symbols that represent familiar activities and commonly used words.

Upon graduation, Leah merged her love for business and for missions work into one perfect career with Bausch + Lomb. She’s able to apply her marketing expertise in her job stateside and was chosen to represent Bausch + Lomb for dermatological missions in India.

During her nine days abroad, Leah worked in a clinic that helped over 1,800 patients, most of whom were schoolchildren that had never before seen a doctor. “The entire trip was an amazing adventure. I was able to experience the culture, history and, most importantly, the people,” said Leah. “I am young in my career but not in my ambition. My advice is to follow your passion and dream big!”

eing a respectful person requires an open mind. The western world’s self-seeking mentality stands in opposition to the respect St. Francis modeled, but with deeper education comes deeper concern. Adrenaline Abby Abby Coccagna does a lot of things in her job as an Army Flight Nurse that would get your adrenaline pumping, like riding in helicopters over battlefields in Afghanistan.

It is hard to believe that she was an accident-prone child who frequented the emergency department. The nurses were so kind and caring that they inspired her future career; however, it was the Nursing faculty at Saint Francis who gave her the confidence she needs to save lives in a war zone.

“ Study abroad has been, quite literally, my ticket to the world.” —Beth Wheeler From fear to freedom Beth Wheeler is quiet by nature and a lover of books.

She came to SFU with no intention of studying abroad.

In fact, she was terrified of the idea. But people Beth admired challenged her to face her fears, and she traveled with Saint Francis to both France and Italy.

Upon graduation, Beth moved to France to teach English and be a part of the culture she had grown to love and respect.

In her words, “Study abroad has been, quite literally, my ticket to the world. I am very grateful for the confidence I have gained as a result of my study abroad experiences. Those who choose to study abroad will undoubtably be pushed out of their comfort zone, which creates enormous potential for growth. It gives them a deeper understanding of themselves, the world and their place in it.”

The FareStart Café Seattle’s “most socially responsible crouton” comes from our very own Bill Adamucci ’66. He’s spent his life plagued by statistics of American waste, poverty and hunger, and in 1992, he opened the FareStart Café. This Washington restaurant generates revenue to fund employability and training programs for the homeless. Over 7,000 people have benefitted from job placement through this program and have retained an 88% success rate of employment. This amazing blend of entrepreneurship and philanthropy exemplifies St. Francis’ inspiration: “Start by doing what is necessary.

Then do what is possible. Suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

Embrace the outdoors The region surrounding Saint Francis is a giant playground. Almost everywhere you turn, you’ll find nature, adventure, sport and history. Just beyond campus is the highest skiable mountain in Pennsylvania, the former personal golf course of Charles M. Schwab, a sparkling 1,600-acre lake, some of the best whitewater rafting in the East and dozens of miles of hiking and biking trails. From senior to investment banker in one year A standout soccer player from Mexico City, Pablo Medina made the long journey to SFU with the goal of playing for a Division I team. His athletic success soon followed him off the field and onto a path he never expected. Pablo graduated a decorated triple major in Finance, Accounting and Management Information Systems with multiple honors. His SFU accomplishments led him to New York City where he accepted an Investment Banking Analyst position at Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Global Technology, Media & Telecom Group. Pablo’s goals may have changed since his first days at SFU, but his drive for success remains.
