The interscholastic athletic program seeks to help student-athletes grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially through the challenges of athletic discipline, team participation, and interscholastic competition.
The mission is educational and is designed to enrich and complement the UHS academic experience.
Although we are proud of the championship banners that fill our gym, we value the development of our student-athletes even more. Red Devils leave here with strong skills and values in areas like effective teamwork, listening and communication, disciplined work habits, respect for authority, and emotional control. Students at all levels of sports–from the brand-new freshman trying out cross country to the highly skilled soccer player–are valued and respected by their coaches and expected to develop into contributing members of the program of their choice. We don’t measure the success of our athletic program by our win-loss record; we measure success by the way Red Devil Athletics helps enhance the high school experience and prepares our graduates for success in college and beyond.

The opening of the Bessolo Family Pavilion marks a transformative moment for University Athletics, a long-awaited, deeply meaningful milestone that reflects the growth, ambition, and excellence of our athletic community. As the new home for boys’ and girls’ Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, and Fencing, the Pavilion is more than just a facility—it’s a powerful symbol of pride and purpose.
For years, our student-athletes have competed at the highest levels, often without a true home court to call their own. Now, with the Pavilion, we have a space that matches the caliber of our programs and the dedication of our athletes and coaches. It’s a space where excellence can be practiced and performed daily. From the roar of the crowd on game nights to the quiet early morning grind of practice, this building will hold the heartbeat of University Athletics.
But this is about more than cement, steel, wood, and bleachers. The Pavilion is a community hub, a statement of belief in the value of sport, and a tribute to the character of our athletes—resilient, disciplined, and united. It’s a space that not only supports athletic excellence but also fosters growth, teamwork, and perseverance—allowing our students to become the best version of themselves, both on and off the court. With this new home, we honor the past, energize the present, and set the stage for a future that’s even brighter. Together with Paul Goode Field, the addition of the Bessolo Family Pavilion places University Athletics at the top of athletic facilities in San Francisco. Our athletes now train and compete in some of the finest venues in the city—spaces that reflect their talent, drive, and commitment. These facilities provide our students with the quality environments they deserve to develop and excel in their individual sports.
Let the games begin.
