40TH ANNIVERSARY ORCHESTRA | BAROQUE ENSEMBLE | STRING QUARTETS 2023–2024 SEASON

WELCOME TO SANTA FE PRO MUSICA’S 42 nd SEASON!

It was a joy to collaboratively plan these programs with Carol Redman, Pro Musica’s co-founder! Over the 20 years I have been coming as a guest soloist, I have always felt that intimacy and immediacy are hallmarks of Pro Musica’s offerings, providing magical musical moments that linger in our memory. Part of what drew me to this organization was its unique history and mix of orchestral, string quartet, and Baroque concerts, commissioned new works, youth concerts, and much more.

As Artistic Director, I look to carry on the rich legacy of the founders while bringing some of the music, ideas, and people to Santa Fe that have inspired my own artistic growth over these years. Highlights of this season include our opening concert “Source Code” in November. I will lead the Pro Musica Orchestra in an exploration across cultural borders and epochs to seek out some of music’s rich and colorful roots. Our Orchestra Series bookends the season with Conductor Laureate Thomas O’Connor leading the Pro Musica Orchestra alongside Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico in Mozart’s epic work for the ages, his Requiem. Along the way, our String Quartet Series presents five of the world’s best—Brentano, Diderot, Elias, Quatuor Ébène, and my quartet, Brooklyn Rider in collaboration with Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter. Our Baroque Series continues with a Holy Week period instrument ensemble led by Stephen Redfield and focuses on female composers of the Baroque era. And our beloved Holiday Bach Festival will be back in December. New this season is our Discovery Series—unique educational and social events that bring you closer to the artists and the music, literally and figuratively!

Join us! We invite you to make an important difference by subscribing to “The Works” and planning to join us whenever your schedule allows. Thank you for your support of classical music and Santa Fe Pro Musica. Looking forward to sharing many magical moments with you in our 2023–24 season!

French Baroque Women Musicians

For millennia, women have participated in music-making, whether in taverns, homes, or palaces. However, only women from the wealthiest families had the money and leisure to become musicians with the education to write down their accomplishments—and if their music was not written down, we don’t have it today. This concert highlights the voices of women from the lavish court of Louis XIV (1638—1715).

Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1665—1729)

Born into a family of acclaimed harpsichord builders and court musicians, Elisabeth had education, privilege and connections. As a teenager, she entered the court of Louis XIV where she performed on the harpsichord and composed music.

Antonia Bembo (1640—1720)

Antonia Bembo, a native of Venice, fled an abusive marriage and moved to Paris where she blossomed as a singer-songwriter. Her songs exemplified the perspectives of women, giving them a voice when they could not do so themselves.

Julie Pinel (c. 1710—1737)

Through family connections Julie had access to the court of Louis XIV, who awarded her a prestigious eight-year printing privilege. With this opportunity, she published two collections of her music for voice, harpsichord and accompanying instruments.

Mademoiselle Duval (1718—c. 1775)

Mademoiselle Duval’s career revolved around the Paris Opera where she composed music, played the harpsichord, and was a singer and a dancer.

WOMEN of DISTINCTION

Our Women of Distinction Initiative provides opportunities for women engaged in various facets of the classical music industry. This program is supported by many contributors within the Pro Musica community.

ANNA CLYNE , composer

On April 27 and 28, as a poignant companion piece to Mozart’s Requiem, the Santa Fe Pro Musica Orchestra will perform Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms, a tribute to her late mother. This GRAMMY-nominated composer was recently featured on The New York Times program “5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Classical Music.”

JESSIE MONTGOMERY , composer

One of Santa Fe Pro Musica’s favorite contemporary composers, we present Mongomery’s music on our November 4–5 and January 28 orchestra programs. Fanfare magazine noted that her music combines “17 th century English consort music, samba, mbira, Zimbabwean dance, swing, techno … and occasionally veers towards a modern jazz jam session.”

SACHI OBA , artist

Sachi Oba’s work “Made of Stars” (2021, acrylic on canvas) graces the covers of Pro Musica’s 2023–24 program book and brochure. Born in southern France, and daughter of renowned stone sculptor Toru Oba, she is known for her abstract paintings in bright contrasting colors with flowing drips and melting techniques.

CLARA ROTTSOLK , soprano

One of Santa Fe Pro Musica’s favorite singers, with her “clear, appealing voice and expressive conviction” (New York Times), Rottsolk has performed in many of our Baroque Christmas, Holy Week, and Bach Festival concerts. This season, she performs with us on December 22–23, and is featured on March 23–24.

(pictured on page 8)

CAROLINE SHAW , composer

Shaw is one of the most awarded composers of her generation, and has received two GRAMMY awards (2019, 2022) and a Pulitzer Prize (2013). In addition to classical music, she writes for film, pop, and TV. Santa Fe Pro Musica presents the Diderot String Quartet performing her music on January 14.

TANYA TOMKINS , cello

Equally at home on baroque and modern cello, Tanya is renowned for her unique interpretations of the Bach Cellos Suites. She has recorded this monumental set, performed them world-wide, and will present them in Santa Fe on December 20 and 21 as part of our Holiday Bach Festival in St. Francis Auditorium.

ANNE SOFIE VON OTTER , mezzo-soprano

Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter is one of the finest singers of her generation with a wealth of recordings and awards including two GRAMMY Awards for best classical vocal performance. She will join Colin Jacobsen’s string quartet Brooklyn Rider in Santa Fe on November 19 for a program celebrating song.
