FROM THE MAYOR

Welcome to Edson! Please take the time to experience all of the great cultural, recreational, and business opportunities we have to offer. Edson is a great stop for families with our amazing Kinsmen Park that features a top notch spray park, playground area, fire pits, washroom facilities and outdoor exercise equipment. If you enjoy music, you can take in the Rotary Sundays in the Park performances. On select Sundays throughout the summer there will be local musicians, family games, and great food served up at Centennial Park for our summer concert series. Family fun at its finest! Experience history with a visit to the Galloway Station Museum and Travel Centre located in the beautiful Centennial Park. It’s the perfect place to learn more about Edson’s origin and to gather information about everything this region has to offer. There are also some great opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Check out our great ski trail system, head out snowmobiling, play a round of golf on our beautiful 18 hole course, or explore our local hiking/walking trails. Edson is also world famous for our passion for Slo-Pitch. Vision Park has 24 regulation ball diamonds and is host to the Edson Kinsmen Slo-Pitch Tournament with around 272 teams participating on August long weekend each year! If you’re looking to start up a business, Edson is a great location for that as well. The Town is proud to work with our local Chamber of Commerce and other local business groups to ensure that our business community is provided with the best environment in order to promote growth and success. Our business district has been very successful and we look forward to continuing to encourage that growth. So whether you’re looking to relocate to our community, set up a new business, or just visit, Edson is a place you can do it all!

HEART OF THE YELLOWHEAD

Mayor Greg Pasychny

The Town of Edson (population 8,646) is located in the McLeod River Valley, immediately east of the Canadian Rockies foothills at an elevation of 925 m (3035 ft) — near the center of Yellowhead County. The surrounding landscape consists of primarily boreal forest with sand hills and muskeg (low-lying bog). Wildlife native to the area include bear, moose, deer, wolf, fox, rabbit and a wide variety of avian and aquatic life. Twinned Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway) runs through Edson from east to west. The highest point on the Yellowhead — Obed — is between Edson and Hinton and has an elevation of 1163.9 m (3818.88 ft). The historic Coal Branch can be reached from Edson via Highway 47 to the south and Highway 32 connects Edson and Whitecourt to the north.

THE EARLY YEARS Edson was born of the railway, during the height of transcontinental rail construction heading toward BC. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP) was ferrying hundreds of railway workers west and, initially, it looked as if Wolf Creek would be the established divisional point. However, Wolf Creek fell victim to real estate speculators and the GTP refused to pay the overinflated prices. Instead, they moved the divisional point eight miles west, to the home of modern day Edson.

Edson received its first passenger train on August 10,1910 and in 1911, the people of Edson placed a request to the Post Master General to have the post office renamed from Heatherwood — a name it had carried for about a year — to Edson, in honour of Edson J. Chamberlain, the then general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Rail. On September 21, 1911, Edson was officially incorporated as a town and by 1912, the population had nearly tripled to a staggering 1,233 people and 32 local businesses. For all its prosperity, however, Edson also became a hotbed for unlawful activities that followed many frontier towns.

4

www.gallowaystationmuseum.com

In the spring of 1913, a fire claimed the wholesale liquor store building and another fire consumed the Old Edson Hall. It was a night of destruction that demolished much of Edson’s ‘red light’ district. That fire and a later riot would prompt the hiring of the Royal North West Mounted Police to patrol the streets and bring order back to the community. With law and order in place, families came to settle the area, encouraged that they would be safe and protected from the lawlessness following the rail construction. By 1920, the town had power, water, sewer systems and a telephone switch board. Soon, there was a dentist, long distance service and improvements made to the postal service, along with better roadways in and out of Edson. These economic foundations stayed strong throughout Edson’s history and were augmented by an extended forestry industry, trap lines, oil and gas development, coal developments to the south, and dynamic small businesses that continue to flourish in Edson.

CULTURE DAYS

Alberta Culture Days in Edson is a time to discover arts and culture opportunities, experience a variety of events, and celebrate local artistic talent at the end of September. On Friday evening, local residents and groups are recognized with awards at Arts on Fire. On Saturday, drop-in activities are hosted by Edson Creative Arts Society, Edson Craft Centre (potters), Edson Public Library and the Red Brick Arts Centre organizes a display of work by local artists and artisans. The Galloway Station Museum raises the community tipi and offers heritage activities. The finale — Rotary Sundays in the Park Wrap-Up Concert in Centennial Park. Events are funded by grants from Government of Alberta, Town of Edson, and private donors. The weekend is powered by talented, dedicated volunteers who share their time and energy with the community throughout the year. Photo by Giles Merriott www.365photography.com

SLO-PITCH CAPITAL OF CANADA

The population of Edson swells once a year as ball players from all over North America head for the heart of the Yellowhead. Billed as the world’s greatest slo-pitch tournament, Edson Kin Slo-Pitch is celebrating its 36th year this August long weekend. Vision Park boasts 24 regulation-sized diamonds and hosts 272 mixed open division teams during this one-of-a-kind tournament, with cash and prizes totalling more than $60,000. Entertainment is held each night in the on-site beer gardens known as ‘The Hanger.’ Camping is available inside Vision Park and there are several campgrounds and hotels/motels in the area to give you a place to lay your head. Remember, book early as this is a very popular tournament! This great ball weekend includes the always entertaining home run derbies (the ladies competition is held on Saturday and the mens on Sunday), local on-site vendors, bussing to and from Edson and a Masters division for 40+ males and 35+ females with all skill levels represented. Players must be at least 18 years of age to register for the tournament. All proceeds raised through this event are used by the nonprofit organization, Kinsmen Club of Edson, to help support a variety of community programs, events and charities. RED BRICK ARTS CENTRE

Serving Edson and area since 1913 As one of Edson’s oldest buildings, the Red Brick Arts Centre and Museum is a must see! Built in 1913, the Red Brick was one of Edson’s first schools and continued to serve the children of Edson until 1967 when it was closed down. It then become a bus barn for the school division but when a new facility was opened in the 80s, the future of the Red Brick was uncertain. A campaign to save the building started in 1985 and succeeded when the building was designated a municipal historical resource in 1987. 102 years after opening its doors, the Red Brick has become the town’s cultural cornerstone, complete with an art gallery, 141 seat theatre, dance studios, permanent art collection and a classroom museum. It’s founder Rod Hay, who is an eight time Canadian champ and 20 time NFR qualifier has brought together Canadian champions and World champions, from the USA and Australia. As a Canadian Professional Rodeo Association event, all the prize money counts toward the Canadian Finals Rodeo. It’s a saddle bronc event only, with 20 professional cowboys riding for $18,000 and with new bronc horses competing for $5,000 in prize money. Bring your boots, hats and trailers and plan to have a weekend of fun and excitement.

FROM THE YELLOWHEAD COUNTY MAYOR

Welcome to Yellowhead County! Abundant with open wilderness, lush agricultural areas, rivers and streams, this is one area of the province worth visiting! Stretching from the west side of the Pembina River to the Jasper National Park gates, Yellowhead County has something for anyone wanting to explore some of the most majestic and exciting landscapes Canada has to offer. Opportunities exist for touring, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, ATVing, white water rafting, caving, guiding, skiing and community festivals and events. During your visit we invite you to stay at one of the area’s bed and breakfasts or comfortable hotels. Or, instead camp at one of the 1000 campsites, or take a scenic trail on a guided horseback adventure and sleep at one of the many guest ranches that are rich in history and local culture. The residents of Yellowhead County are proud of everything we have to offer, from the majestic Rockies to the rolling acres of prime prairie farmland, and know that there is something for everyone in Yellowhead County. There are several areas that offer opportunities for day rides or longer duration stays. The Swanson area is only 20 km west on Highway 16 and offers diverse riding conditions; there is access across the Sundance Provincial Park via the freshly completed Ruperts Crossing which has opened up many more trails for use. Another area that the Edson ATV Club stewards is the South Esk trail, located approximately 120 km South of Edson and can be staged from Grave Flats. PARKS IN THE YELLOWHEAD Sundance Provincial Park

Sundance Provincial Park is comprised of three very different and unique features only found within the park’s boundaries. It was declared a park under the Special Places Program. Emerson Lakes is a grouping of 5 beautifully clear lakes nestled in a quiet oasis. Seven km of hiking trails circle three of the lakes and offer amazing scenic views. The lakes provide excellent fishing for brook trout and a range of other fish. Marl Bog is a provincially significant site for flora. Twelve different species of orchids, as well as 5 different species of carnivorous plants can be found here along with a variety of rare aquatic plants, sedges, rushes and ferns. This area has a unique combination of soil and hydrology which provide for such an unusual grouping of plants.

Wild Sculpture Trail

This trail takes a journey through the ever changing hoodoos of Sundance Park. The sandstone cliffs, which were and are carved by rain and wind, hang on the side of steep cliffs overlooking the lakes below. The trail is about 9 km in length one way and provides camping spots for overnight adventures within the park.

Sundance Provincial Park is 49 km Northwest of Edson. It is accessible via Hwy 16 to Swanson Road or via the North Road. Both routes meet up with Emerson Road.

PARKS IN THE YELLOWHEAD Shining Bank

Shining Bank offers a wide variety of family camping activities within a quiet aspen grove. A roped off swimming area, playground facilities, a sandy beach and excellent boat launching and docking facilities give great access and use to the area’s largest lake. 24 km N of Peers on Highway 32

Bear Lake Park

Bear Lake Park remains one of the area’s most popular lakes. The sandy beach, clean water, and playground are a draw for the younger members of the family while the boat launch and docking areas play host to the more adventuresome water enthusiasts for water skiing and tubing. 35 km NE of Edson on Highway 748

Obed Lake Provincial Park

Obed Lake Provincial Park encompasses 3 small lakes and the upland areas around them. The area contains a diverse mix of wetland and well drained upland communities including black spruce, tamarack, ferns, mixed wood forests, and closed conifer forests of lodgepole pine and black spruce. The area is important for wildlife as well, especially for elk and as an over wintering area for moose. 55 km W of Edson on Highway 16 Photo by Mike Dykstra www.edsonphotographyclub.com

UNIQUE SITES Brule Sand Dunes

These three storey sand dunes are fun places to hike, bike or quad. In the 1900s the Grand Trunk Pacific railway ran across the dunes hoping to connect the Rockies to Edmonton. Drifting sand over the tracks caused this section of the railway to be shut down and remains of some of the tracks are still visible today. W of Hinton off Highway 16

Ogre Canyon

The canyon and the sinkholes within it were carved out by streams and underground water. The climb to the top is a difficult one, rising up almost 900 metres along switchbacks. Four wheel drive is recommended on the gravel road to get to the parking lot. NW of Hinton near Brule

Coal Branch Railway

The Coal Branch Railway is now a chain of abandoned mining towns along the eastern slopes of the central Canadian Rocky Mountains and was once an important part of Alberta’s coal industry. Once the Branch was famous for its guarantee of work and overall prosperity, however, technological advancement outdated the collieries and many of the once prosperous towns are now abandoned. The railway was a link from Bickerdike (seven miles west of Edson) to the coal mining towns of the Rockies. S off Highway 16 onto Highway 40 Photo by Madison Sharman www.ruralrenditions.com

UNIQUE SITES

Rosevear Ferry The Rosevear Ferry has been in operation for over seventy years and is one of only seven ferries remaining in Alberta today. To access the ferry go north off Highway 16 on Range Road 154, also known as the Rosevear Road. Mountain Park Mountain Park used to be a thriving village of more than 1,000 people but now is a ghost town. No more remains of the town but faint traces of buildings and a cemetery that is taken care of by previous residents of the town. Cardinal Divide The Cardinal Divide is an elevation of land that separates the Arctic Drainage from drainage to Hudson’s Bay. The Cardinal Divide is a day use area with hiking trails that showcase much of the unique wildlife and wildflowers in the area, providing for a truly pleasurable alpine view.

WILLMORE PARK

You’ll find a piece of a different world at Willmore Park. As one of Edson’s best kept secrets, Willmore Park will certainly impress. Located right along the McLeod River, the park offers something for everyone. Hiking and biking trails, ranging from 1.5 km to 5 km provide varying degrees of difficulty and are surrounded by the beauty of the wilderness and scenic views of the river valley. It is also a great place for runners of all levels. There is plenty of room to camp in one of the 12 river side sites or 29 forest sites. Group camping and picnicking is also available. The area is also a great fishing destination. The park is used for tobogganing, snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter months and in the summer, it is a popular spot for swimming, hiking, running, soaking up the sun or tubing on the river. Willmore Park is a definite must see with its calm, small town charm with grand views and many potential adventures.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Muskeg Flyers

Offering excellent cross-country skiing through beautiful rolling foothills forest, the Hornbeck Cross Country Skiing Forest Recreation Area is located 15 kilometres Northwest of Edson.

Follow highway 16 West from Edson about 4 kilometres, and then turn North on the Schlick Road (Range Road 181A). Follow the Schlick Road 8.5 kilometres to its end at a T-intersection, then turn left and follow the signs to the ski area. The Hornbeck Area is a legally designated Forest Recreation Area reserved for non-motorized recreation under the Alberta Forests Act. Volunteers of the Edson Muskeg Flyers Nordic Ski Club maintain the trails and facilities, with support contributed by industry, municipalities, and individuals in the district. The 30 kilometres of trails in the Hornbeck Area are groomed for both skating and classical skiing. There are trails for both novices and intermediate skiers. The staging area provides a warm-up shelter with a wood stove, picnic tables, pit toilets, and a parking lot. 46

WINTER WONDERLAND Edson Sno-Seekers

A nonprofit, family oriented club, The Edson Sno-Seekers has existed informally since 1969, and was officially registered in 1986. Sno-Seeker volunteers maintain signed, groomed trails from Edson North to Silver Summit, West to the Little Sundance Staging Area and South to Robb. There is a warm-up shelter between Edson and Silver Summit, and at Tom Hill Tower where the trail connects to the Whitcourt trail system (Golden Triangle). The Edson Sno-Seekers are members of the Alberta Snowmobile Association and promote safe snowmobile riding in Edson and area. For more information: edsonsnoseekers@yahoo.com

Edson Curling Club

Located at the Edson and District Recreation Complex, the Edson Curling Club hosts a Men’s, Ladies’, Mixed and Junior leagues. With eight sheets of ice and an ‘Open’ curling night, the Edson Curling Club is a great place to learn the sport, meet new friends or just watch the action. The Edson Curling Club is a member of the Canadian Curling Association. For more information visit: www.edsonrecreationcomplex.com

Hockey/Skating

Edson has two outdoor arenas. One in Glenwood Park, 463 - 72 Street and one in Griffiths Park (behind the Boys and Girls Club) at 5414 - 6 Avenue. Both arenas have full boards with lights (until 10:30 pm) and are maintained by the Town of Edson. Talisman Place (Leisure Centre)has two indoor arenas for hockey and public skating from September to April. The arenas are home to minor hockey teams, ladies recreational hockey, men’s hockey league and oldtimers hockey. The arenas are also home to an active figure skating club. Public skating and shinny are regularly scheduled.

INDUSTRY Coal

Mining has been a key player in the Edson area for many years, but when oil became the fuel of choice, coal mining started to decline. Mines gradually shut down in the 1950s and the industry slowed dramatically until the late 1970s when coal became a viable product again.

Oil & Gas

Edson is located on one of the largest gas fields in Alberta and there are always employment opportunities in this field. Exploration, drilling, collection, transportation and servicing of the oil and gas industry continues to be a driving force and major contributor to Edson’s economic prosperity.

Forestry

In 1983, an OSB manufacturing plant opened in the Edson area — Pelican Spruce Mills (now Weyerhaeuser). Weyerhaeuser uses the abundant supply of Aspen and Black Poplar to manufacture structural panels used for flooring and sheltering in residential home construction. In the early 1990s a second mill, Sundance Forest Industries (formerly Erith Tie Company) built a new stateof-the-art sawmill which soon expanded. The mill is now known as Edson Forest Products, a division of West Fraser.
