Executive Summary In April 2014, the Rotary Club of Edson and Alberta Health Services came together to create the Wellness Project - enhancing grounds of the new Edson Healthcare Centre to improve the quality of life of the clients, their family and the staff who aid them. Alberta Health Sevices has developed a base plan for the grounds surrounding the Healthcare Centre but an enhanced plan has also been created with the help of a landscape architect, front line health care workers and Rotarians that would increase the therapeutic usefulness of the grounds and make them for inviting. The main focus of the Wellness Project is the Continuing Care Courtyard. Representatives of the Edson Rotary Club met with Healthcare Centre Site Manager Wayne McEachern, ISL Engineering and Land Services Ltd. Landscape Architect Jeff Schurek and several front line health care workers to discuss that enhanced plan. Bringing the front line healthcare workers and the landscape architect together proved to make an already good design even better, by incorporating educated suggestions, the landscape architect was able to create the plans for a beautiful, therapeutic space. Enhancements are to include a play space, augmented plantings, additional benches, outdoor structures, pathways and more. Design elements of the Edson Healthcare Centre are placing emphasis on the benefits of providing access for patients, clients, visitors and staff to views, landscapes and green spaces. Spending time outdoors, especially in a garden setting, has been shown to positively affect a person’s physical, mental, social and overall well-being. The design of the Continuing Care Courtyard is focused on the healing elements of nature, as well as accessibility, sensory, therapeutic, restorative, social and rehabilitation needs of clients and residents. Incorporation of this enhanced courtyard will assist in meeting the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of not only clients and residents, but also family members, friends and our broader community. The Rotary Club of Edson has pledged $100,000 toward the Wellness Project and will also be the main fundraiser for the project, through to its completion. In order to make this integral project happen, the Rotary Club of Edson has partnered with the Community Care Foundation Of Edson and District, who will act as a conduit for fundraised dollars. The ultimate goal of the Wellness project is the creation of a safe, secure natural refuge that is both useful and beautiful for clients in need of a high level of care, their family, friends and staff of the Edson Healthcare Centre. We sincerely hope that you can help.

Sincerely.

Individuals with dementia identify transitions between dark and light color tones as holes or danger zones. Abrupt changes in color tone will be avoided in paving materials and furnishings. Colors of black, deep blue and pink/red will be avoided and care will be given to assist dementia patients negotiating the site – use minimal textural or color changes on the walkways.

The need for seating options for clients with ambulatory issues and bariatric clients was identified. Handrails will be provided throughout the Continuing Care Courtyard that will extend the possible unassisted walking distance of many clients. Simple, constant height rails that complement the surrounding environment will be used.

Enhancements will include trees, shrubs and perennials designed to improve the sensory experience of the courtyard, whimsical stone pathways (easily navigability and flush to the ground) and wood composite planters for clients to enjoy. Included in the planned upgrades are woodland nooks, ornamental bolders and a play area for children.

Items of comfort are also included in the proposed enhancements. These include an outdoor fireplace to be enjoyed three seasons of the year, barbeques that can be used year-round and patio tables and chairs. A shade structure for two outdoor lounge areas and a water boulder-type feature are also being put forward.
