MAIN OBJECTIVE

To encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity in education, promoting the development of innovative ideas and solutions that address current and future challenges, and to leverage technology and digital tools to enhance learning and facilitate access to educational resources and opportunities, ensuring that individuals can access high-quality education regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.

Material Material

DEVELOPELEMENTS DEVELOPELEMENTS

As stated by Mukundan, Zarifi, and Rezvani Kalajahi (2016), while developing reading materials as pasrt of the learning process – specially for ESL students – we should be careful while selecting them and how we present them to the classroom:

BE AWARE OF THE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LEVEL:

All the reading material should be appropriate for the language level, but it needs to be challenging enough the students to improve their reading skills but also comprehensible enough for them to be able to understand the main ideas and details of the text. Work on it, and even when to enjoy the content itself.

CONTENT RELEVANCE:

The content always needs to be relevant and fall near within the students’ experiences and expectations. It needs to be interesting and meaningful. The reason behind this approach is to make sure to boos the enjoyment and engagement helping them to feel more motivated and facilitate the retention of the information / content of knowledge.

AUTHENTICITY:

The use of real-world text such as articles, newspapers, magazines, and literature as a whole, reveals a whole new world of content knowledge to the learners, letting them know that the language itself (even as a second one) is part of their daily lives. It exposes them to authentic language use and cultural contexts.

VOCABULARY AND LANGUAGE SUPPORT:

The vocabulary should be appropriate for the learners' language level – as stated already - and should be supported with explanations to help them understand new words or phrases. During a brand new text, it is always better to provide them with language support, such as glossaries, annotations, or footnotes, to assist them getting the cultural references, or expressions.

LISTENING

Type of listening performance that involves focusing on specific details or specific information in a listening passage. It requires learners to listen carefully to extract specific meaning or details from the spoken content. The way it works is to always look for details, specific information and sequency.

INTENSIVE LISTENING EXAMPLES

Help to organize the recipe: Listen to the recording and put the following steps in the correct order to make a perfect smoothie.

PERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES

SELECTIVE SELECTIVE

Involves choosing specific parts or sections of a listening passage to focus on, while ignoring others. It requires learners to make conscious decisions about what parts of the listening passage to listen to, based on their purpose or specific goals. The way it works is to always gather specific information or make decisions based on limited or partial information.

LISTENING

SELECTIVE LISTENING EXAMPLES

Listen to the recording and circle the keywords or phrases related to advantages of working from home.

PERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES

INTERACTIVE INTERACTIVE

It reflects the active participation and interaction between the listener and the speaker. It goes beyond just listening passively and includes engaging in meaningful communication. The way it works is to developing tasks where the students interact in a dynamic way, asking and responding questions, seeking clarification to the content, and providing conclusions.

LISTENING

INTERACTIVE LISTENING EXAMPLES

Pretend you are a celebrity, listen to the interview and respond to the questions asked by the interviewer using appropriate language and tone.

Listen to the recording of a restaurant conversation between a waiter and a customer and participate in the role-play engaging in a conversation.

Listen to the recording of a news report about a recent event and ask for clarification when you encounter unfamiliar terminology.

Listening Listening

PERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES

EXTENSIVE EXTENSIVE

It’s based on listening to longer texts, such as stories, lectures, podcasts, or presentations. It focuses on overall understanding of the content, rather than on detailed understanding of individual phrases. The way it works is to create a relaxing environment when the students feel comfortable while listening to a long text, focusing on understanding the meaning and context of the entire discourse.

LISTENING

INTERACTIVE LISTENING EXAMPLES

Listen to an authentic podcast of your favorite youtuber and take notes on the main ideas and overall content of the podcast. Share it with the class.

Listen to an audio book or a story in the target language and summarize the main plot.

PERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES

LISTENING

It’s a type of listening performance that involves actively responding to spoken language in real-time, such as in interactive conversations.

The way it works is by enhancing the students’ ability to listen and respond effectively in various contexts.

RESPONSIVE LISTENING EXAMPLES

Engage in a role-play where you are a customer, and your partner is a salesperson. Negotiate the price of something you want to buy.

Working in pairs: One person has a picture and the other one describes it to their partner, who listens carefully and tries to draw the picture based on the description.

Have a conversation with a native speaker on a topic of interest.

PERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES

Listening Listening AUTONOMOUS AUTONOMOUS

LISTENING

It’s basically when learners take responsibility for their own listening practice and developing self-directed listening skills. The way it works is by boosting autonomy and making feel the students comfortable enough with interactive content without relying on external guidance or instruction. Allow the students to explore by themselves the content itself, by following just a tiny piece of initial advice.

AUTONOMOUS LISTENING EXAMPLES

Choose a podcast or video related to a topic you are interested in. Listen to it and take notes on the main ideas.

Listen to your favorite artist and try to transcribe the lyrics.

Speaking Speaking DEVELOPING DEVELOPING

Skills Skills

Accuracy: It is an important aspect in the development of the speaking ability, during which it must be verified how the learners are making use of the language system, the pronunciation and the vocabulary implemented must be seen, after each speaking activity the The teacher must give feedback giving the positive and negative aspects of the activity.

In class:

Activities such as role play allow students who are not sure with their speaking to develop little by little, the feedback from teachers must start with the positive aspects in such a way that students will be motivated to continue improving.

Fluency: After the development of speaking activities, the teacher must recognize the new vocabulary and the correct pronunciation of each of the words presented In class:

Students are encouraged to sing their favorite song, this way they will feel that they are doing it more fluently and will be motivated to continue with the process, this requires practice and listening.

Complexity: The student's level of English must be taken into account in order to demand more elaborate answers from the students. Complexity is defined by Ellis (2003, p. 340) as “the extent to which the language produced in performing a task is elaborate and varied”

In class:

Ask questions that increase in complexity, in this way students will be motivated to answer and the difficulty of answering each question increases.

It is important for the teacher to know the interests and abilities of their students as well as their learning styles, all this favors the teaching and learning process, as well as significant experiences with native people other than the teacher that motivate them to carry out questions and participate in the language to be learned.

Materials Materials

As mentioned by Degener, & Gates (2003, cited in Maroko, 2010) authentic materials must be used in class so that students can apply it in their day to day, these are extensions of real language, in the way in which are commonly expressed, this can be linked to the context of students who are immersed in technology. An activity that could be carried out is a group on Facebook or Telegram, where all the students participate, in which the students must share a meme and everyone must comment on it, or the teacher makes a post and everyone must respond, either a question or something that you would like to share in this way we promote the ability of writing through daily activities of the students.
