Then, at 3rd down and 9 yards to go, Ryan threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Austin Hooper, increasing the Falcon’s lead to 14 (which was the largest deficit Tom Brady has ever faced in a Super Bowl, for the time being). After the Patriots got the ball back, the Patriots were able to get the ball to the Falcon’s 23-yard line with major help from penalties on the Falcon’s defense. However, after only two plays by the Falcons, Matt Ryan fumbled the ball, and the Patriots recovered the ball on the Falcon’s 25-yard line. After this, Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass to Danny Amendola, and successfully made the 2 point conversion to cut the Falcon’s lead to just 8 points with just over five minutes left on the clock. The Falcon’s next possession got them into field goal range, but sacks and penalties pushed them out of range. So, instead of kicking the field goal, the Falcons were forced to punt the ball to the Patriots. For many, this possession by the Patriots was exciting. They moved the ball down the field, and Tom Brady completed a pass to Julian Edelman on 3rd down (who made an amazing catch, since he caught a deflected pass right before it hit the ground). Eventually, the Patriots got the ball to the 1-yard line, and ran it in for a touchdown. Then, the Patriots successfully got the 2-point conversion to tie the game at the end of the 4th quarter. This score lead to the first overtime game in Super Bowl history. At the start of overtime, the Patriots won the coin toss, and elected to receive the ball. All the Patriots or Falcons had to do to win the game was either get a field goal and make sure the other team does not score, or get a touchdown to win the game. Eventually, the Patriots were able to move it down the field and get a touchdown to win the game. Many consider this year’s Super Bowl to be one of the most exciting ones in the history of the NFL. Not just because it was the first Super Bowl to go into overtime, but also this year’s game had set and broken about 37 NFL records. One record was broken by Tom Brady, when he broke the record for most pass completions, attempts, and passing yards in both a single Super Bowl game and career Super Bowl games. Also, the Atlanta Falcons became the first team in Super Bowl history to intercept a pass, return it for a touchdown, and still lose the game. Another record that was broken by the New England Patriots was the largest deficit overcome by a team to win the Super Bowl (the previous record was 10 points by the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII), the third largest comeback in NFL playoff history, and the largest fourth quarter comeback in NFL playoff history. Also, the Patriots won their fifth franchise championship with Tom Brady as quarterback (the most by a single quarterback), and Tom Brady set the record for the most Super Bowl MVP awards at four. Many say that because of the big comeback and the records set and broken, that this game was not boring.

HC Welcomes Two New Teachers Mrs. Phan and Mrs. Fox answers questions in an interview #Ehmry Ritsco, Stang Staff During the second semester of this school year, Houston Christian gained two new teachers. First is Mrs. Ngoc Mai Phan, who is a long term substitute for Anatomy & Physiology and IPC classes. Second is Mrs. Kelli Fox, who is a long term Spanish substitute.

These teachers came in due to the former teachers relocating mid-year. Mrs. Phan graduated from Houston Baptist University and has a six month old baby named Joshua. She has not always been a traditional teacher, but has worked a lot in Vacation Bible Schools. Since beginning to teach in a more traditional sense at Houston Christian, Mrs. Phan had said, “ I enjoy teaching students new things and I enjoy re-learning the material as well! There is something really special about teaching students.” She wants to know her students on a deeper level to further instill Christ’s love in their hearts. Before becoming a long term sub, she has previously subbed at Houston Christian. She really enjoys the size of the school and says, “This school has been so very kind and supportive towards my transition in teaching! I have met so many bright, smiling faces

who have all offered their hands and ears towards me.” Mrs. Phan is a great addition to the HC community. Mrs. Fox graduated from Texas A&M University with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. During college, she was an intern in San Antonio, Texas for a student ministry. Then just prior to coming to Houston Christian she worked in undergraduate admission at Houston Baptist University. Since starting to teach spanish here at HC she says she loves teaching because, “I get to teach students a language I am passionate about. I have the opportunity to explain and help them understand a concept.” Mrs. Fox is very excited to be here and loves everything about Houston Christian, especially the foundation behind the school. It is always sad to lose teachers, but HC openly welcomes their new additions. These new teachers have already had a great impact on the

community in their short time working here. They are sure to continue adding to HC’s already wonderful environment.

Silver Spur’s Last Showcase The Spurs present their contest routines #Sara Wray, Stang Staff

On February 16th, the Silver Spurs have a showcase presentation at the school. The award winning HC Spurs perform for our school and family to show the routines they have learned. The Silver Spurs is the drill team at our school; they put on many shows throughout the year. The organization is year round and helps to promote school spirit through performances at football games, pep rallies, and state competitions. The Spurs begin practicing different routines beginning in the summer. They work hard through the year perfecting what they have already learned. They perform throughout the football season, putting on shows at half-time. Once football comes to an end, they start focusing more on contests. They have two contests over the span of the school year, one is towards the start of the year and the

other is closer to the end. In their showcase, they get to show their parents and friends the types of dances they perform at these competitions. They put a lot of hard work into what they do. One of the members of the team, Joy Crissmon, said, “Spurs has been really fun, and I got the chance to really know the girls I dance with. It’s a lot of work and commitment. We work till 7 with very short breaks, but the hard work pays off.” The girls all enjoy the chance to dance for their school and show off their talent. The school holds a showcase for the Silver Spurs every year, and students and family love to come and watch them perform. Our Spurs have received many opportunities to show just how great they are. They even got to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was a huge honor.

Spurs in Action The Silver Spurs had their final showcase of the year. The senior Spur members were sad to say goodbye to their team.

European tradition continues The biggest holiday in New Orleans, Mardi Gras, starts up again this month

# Jasmine Mata Stang Staff Mardi Gras is a month long celebration of parades, food, music, and fun. Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, which is one night of feasting and indulging before the Lent period begins. The beginnings of Mardi Gras were not like the parades we see today. The first Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans were elegant society balls. In 1872, the first Mardi Gras parade was held by a group of businessmen to welcome the Russian Grand Duke. The Duke’s family colors consisted of gold, green, and purple. This is where the traditional Mardi Gras colors came from. Years after, the Mardi Gras traditions shifted from being partly in France and partly in New Orleans to solely in New Orleans. While Mardi Gras is celebrated in many parts of the world, New Orleans is home to the largest celebration of the pre-lent period. Mardi Gras Celebrations consist of music, parades, picnics, and floats. Many people attend the parades dressed in green, purple, and gold, and wear a lot of beads that are thrown from the floats and also sold all throughout New Orleans. In New Orleans, many businesses are shut down for the Mardi Gras celebrations. Although a common misconception, many families attend the celebrations to enjoy the delicious food and

fun parade floats. People who live in Louisiana attend, while also people travel to New Orleans to be a part of all the festivities. Another popular Mardi Gras tradition is the masks that people wear. Parade-goers will wear masks that cover their whole face, or just their eyes. The masks are worn because in the beginning people attending the parades wore the masks so that they could not be held back by societal constraints. Now, Mardi Gras is the largest masked party in North America. Masks can be found and purchased all throughout New Orleans if you are looking to participate in this part of the celebration. While New Orleans is the main place to be during this time of year, there are also Mardi Gras celebrations close to Houston. In Galveston, Texas, there are also huge Mardi Gras parades and festivities going on there. If you are interested in going, check out MardiGrasGalveston.com to get tickets.

Protest march takes place in Austin People worldwide united together in a worldwide network of protest to voice. # Emily Villareal, Stang Staff

The beauty of this march was it’s ability to unite people regardless of religion, creed, and any other divined. Many men came as well to show their support and stand in solidarity with their fellow women. These protestors weapons of choice was through their posters; plastered with bold statements of their political agenda. The extensive publication caused light to be shed on topics such as race relations.

On January 21-22, women worldwide rallied together in the efforts to take a stand; a stand for equality, amidst a tense political climate, a day after the United States Presidential Inauguration. Powerhouse cities nationwide held their own rallies and locally, Houston alone harbored over 22 thousand protesters in the heart of the metropolitan area, Downtown Houston. But the march that garnered the most attention was specifically the “March

on Washington,” because of it’s ground breaking turnout of over 500,000 participants and it’s star studded guest list. The entire series of protests documented worldwide all originated from the announcement of the Washington march following the presidential inauguration of President Trump. Inspired by this bold expression of activism, follow up protests spread like wildfire, thus forming the “Women’s March day” as the world witnessed.

Each protestor holds a unique story behind why she decided to protest, but their end goal remained unified: to bring justice and representation for all. It seems the goal of the Women’s March was accomplished though, because the millions of participants conjugating unlike never before in recent history because of such political uproar, truly stands a testament to their dedication and genuine public outroar. The Women’s March proved through the congregation of the people, that the citizens can make an impact.

Girls basketball takes 2nd place in SPC championship Basketball and soccer teams go to the championship # by Sara Wray and Ehmry Ritsco, Stang Staff

Houston Christian is a part of the Southwest Preparatory Conference. This is a two state conference including Texas and Oklahoma. 17 schools compete against each other in all sports to see who will win the championship. Our basketball and soccer team had the chance to go and participate in the tournament. The girls team got the chance to compete in the SPC Championship this winter. The tournament was held at Kinkaid School and St. John’s, from February 9th to the 11th. In the game on the 10th, the girls played against Oakridge and came out with a win. Although, they lost the consolation game the team did manage to make it far. For the seniors, this was their last time to get to play with some of the girls they have been playing with for four years. Jordyn Behan, a senior, said “it was really sad to know that I was playing for my last time, but it was a really fun. I’m happy I got to play with my teammates one last time.” The whole team was sad to have to see the seniors go along with the season. Both boy’s and girl’s basketball were able to participate in the SPC Championship. The boy’s games were hosted by Houston Christian. On the first day they had a close win over St. Marks.

Sadly, on the second day they were unable to beat Greenhill in the quarterfinal. After this, a senior, Shariff Wilson said, “When times are hard stick with your teammates to achieve your goal.” That is exactly what they did despite this loss, the boys did a great job throughout the Championship, coming in 5th place after beating Oakridge on the final day. As for the girls team, they did especially well. Episcopal was the host of their Championship. They are the first team in the school’s history to make it this far in an SPC. The girls beat John Cooper in the quarter final and then Trinity Valley in the semifinals on the second day. Then on the final day of the Championship the girls went up against Episcopal to win the conference. Unfortunately, the girls lost 41 to 50, but were given the runner-up title for the championship. They have had a total of 32 wins this season, which is exceptional for the girls basketball team. All the teams who participated in SPC performed well. These final games were bittersweet for all the seniors involved, but were a great end to the season. At the rate these teams are improving they should be able to participate in many SPC Championships for years to come.

Boys Basketball

The varsity guys played well in the SPC Championship. Even with one of the star players being injured, they managed to show the rest of the teams what they were made of.

Breaking Records The girls basketball team made it to second place in the SPC. They also broke many school records as a team.

Varsity Soccer The girls varsity soccer team made it to SPC this year. They played well in the tournament and made it far.

Tennis serves up some love for their players The tennis season has begun

# by Brittany McVaugh, Stang Staff The tennis team has improved and is better than ever. The tryouts for tennis this season was an organized process, which selected the best tennis players of the student population. Try outs were conducted through January 30 to February 3. Chandler Whiteford, HC tennis player, stated, “Tryouts were hard, but productive this year, which really helped make the team the best this year.” The tennis team focuses on making players better and intends to succeed this year as a team. The tennis team selects the most experienced players to participate in matches, but allows the few others to keep on the team and gain practice as well as experience. Some players have been playing tennis most of their lives. These students include Caroline Burge (Senior), Hudson Hopper (Senior), and Kenner Taylor (Sophomore). Kenner Taylor, sophomore tennis player, has been playing for most of his life and tennis is his passion. Kenner has written a book about the sport of tennis and has been nationally ranked for his excellent tennis skills. The Houston Christian Tennis team has been playing well throughout the previous years, but the 2017 team seems to be the best yet. Caroline Burge, tennis participant throughout all four years at Houston Christian said, “We

have been a pretty good tennis team overall, but this year during tryouts and our practices I have been able to tell this year will most likely be our best year and hopefully win the tournaments.” The tennis team is excited and looking forward to future matches, tournaments, and many wins. This year the tennis schedule appears to have more home games than away, so come out and support your Stangs.

Join the crowd and run with the track team Run your GUTS out in Track and Field # by Sara Wray, Stang Staff Track season has begun. Many athletes have come out this year to run. A lot of them are trying out for their first time. There are over 90 athletes participating in track and field. The motto for track is run your GUTS out, which stands for glorify God, utmost effort, team first, and success. Track is one of the more individual sports, but at Houston Christian it has become a team sport. Every player supports the others as they run, and they stay to watch all the events during meets. Track and field practices in their own event group. The middle distance group got a new coach this year, Coach Johnson. He has coached many athletes who have gotten very far in their running career and is very experienced. The group should benefit greatly from his experience and knowledge. Middle distance athletes run the 400m, 800m, and sometimes the mile. This means their workouts consist of not only sprints but also long distance running. Another group of athletes are sprinters. They run from 100m up to the 400m and have multiple coaches: TJ, Margaret, and Coach Haynes. These coaches are also field event coaches and coach hurdles. Patrick Hurley, a first timer, said “Golly, I’ve been having a real blast hanging out with all my pals and running around til we’re pink in the face, but hard work pays off so we’re going to get first place.” The athletes have a lot of fun at practice while still working hard. Long distance is the final running event group. They are coached by Mrs. Lybrand, who also coaches the girls in cross country. Coach Lybrand has a baby on the way, but is still a very engaged coach, who comes out to all the practices and meets. The athletes who participate in this run up to two miles in meets. They also have to

run for over an hour during practice, but all their work pays off when they do good in the meets. Field events consist of long jump, triple jump, high jump, throwing, and pole vault. There are different coaches for the different events. Jillian Godfrey, one of the throwers for the girls, said “I am excited to be throwing this year, and I can’t wait for SPC.” There are a lot of new students who will take part in the field events, and they have a good chance at getting first place. Some of the students who participate in other sports during track will still come out to try their shot in a field event. This gives our team the opportunity to have the very best athletes in each event. High jump got many new additions and should be able to medal in this event at every meet. The coach for high jump, TJ, is also coaching pole vault, and some runners have decided to try this out for the very first time. Since our school does not have a lot of kids who participate in pole vault, it is good that we have athletes open to testing new events out. The coaches and athletes are very excited for what the season has in store for them, and cannot wait for the SPC Championship. At the championship, the top athletes from the team go to compete. Only three people can participate in an event, so they have to have the best rank out of all the other athletes on the team. This adds some competition between team members, but everyone is happy for whoever gets to go. This year we have a really good shot at taking home a trophy, and the coaches and athletes will work hard to get it.

Woodlands Christian Invitational The track and field team

had an excellent first meet. The boys got 1st overall and the girls came in 3rd.

High Jump Preston Swiggart flies over the bar in the first meet of the season. He came in 1st in this event with a height of 6’5.

Ok to be single on Valentine’s Day or any other Did you have fun without a signifigant other on the Day of Love?

# by Hope Cubbler, Stang Staff

have a boyfriend/girlfriend to cuddle up next to the fire with doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Some call Valentine’s Day “Single Awareness Day,” but being alone on this day doesn’t mean you have to be secluded from every aspect of love. Spend the day with your family. Friends and family are typically the people that are there for you the most. Love on them if you don’t have a significant other. If you are single on this famous day, use the 24 hour period to focus on yourself. Pamper yourself. Have a spa day full of rest and relaxation. If you are sad about being in a relationship, one of the best things to do is distract yourself. Watch a funny movie that boosts your mood. Get your homework done early and take a nap for a few hours. If you want to sulk in the fact that you’re alone, you can indulge yourself in a plethora of sweets and cry your heart out. I think the most helpful thing to do on the day of love when you’re alone is work on bettering yourself. Do something

you have been meaning to do for awhile. Sign up for a new class or go practice a sport you haven’t done in awhile. Go work out and spend time with your friends. At the end of everything, Valentine’s Day is just another regular 24 hour period day that people hype up. It’s a holiday that gives couples an excuse to be extra lovey dovey. If you are in a relationship, take your significant other out and make them feel loved, appreciated, and valued. But alas, if you are alone on this day, do not fret. There are many things you can do and I am sure there is someone out there waiting for you to come into their life. And there’s always next year.

Many believe that Valentine’s Day is a consumer holiday and refuse to celebrate it. Others who participate in the holiday, worry about being single on this day of love. There are many options of ways people can spend a great weekend without being in a relationship. If you have close friends who are also single you can have a girls/guys night out or in. Just because you don’t

How the Day of Love Originated

# byHope Cubbler, Stang Staff

Annually couples all around the world spoil their loved ones all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this saint? Valentine’s Day was originally celebrated as an ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia. The festival was centered around the fertility of women. The day first was honored on February fifthteenth. Pope Gelasius the first recast the pagan festival as a Christian feast day around 496. He then changed the holiday’s name to be St. Valentine’s Day and celebrated on February fourteenth. Emperor Claudius II decided single men were more equipped soldiers than those married. Because History of Valentine’s, Cupid is a commonly used symbol for the holiday. He is a of this, he outlawed marriage for young little man who flies and has arrows which he shoots people with to make them men. Saint Valentine then realized the injustice of the decree. He defied fall in love. Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Later when the emperor found out, and Valentine was sentenced to death. Another possible answer to the beginning of Valentine’s Day is the

pagan festival of Lupercalia. Christians did not approve of the festival, so they outlawed it. Also, in France and England, February fourteenth was considered to be the day of bird’s mating season. This led to the idea that Valentine’s Day should be deemed as the day of romance. Poems are commonly associated with this love-filled holiday. The oldest dated Valentine’s Day love poem is dated back to 1415, written by Charles Duke of Orleans. This poem was written to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. In conclusion, there are many myths and mysteries about how the day of love originated, but it didn’t begin with a man who flies, and all that truly matters is how you celebrate it. Enjoy Valentine’s Day with your significant other and rest in the love that you share for one another.

Valentine’s day fell on a school day, but students still planned to go out and enjoy the holiday. This day, to some, is known as national single awareness day, and they planned to go out with friends to have a good time. Here’s how a few of our very own HC stangs celebrated the amorous festivites:

Travis Dixon: “I’m going to take Chandler out to dinner and then take her home after. Since it is a school day, I have to do homework after, so I won’t be able to be with her long. I am going to take advantage of the time we do have together and try to make the most of it.”

Drew Pontikes: “I am going to school and then after I’ll probably hit up the gym. Later that night, I am going to study up for school the next day.”

Nick Consoli: “I am going to take Ehmry out on a date to see a movie. I know she loves to ice skate, so after the movie we will probably do that.”

Vince Ippoliti: “I’m getting flowers for my mom.” Abby Hepburn: “I am going to see a movie with my friend Griffin.” Lexi Edwards: “I am going to fly out to Austria to visit my long term boyfriend. The plane ticket was expensive, but in the end love wins. We will probably just go to a nice restaurant and spend the day together. I have to fly home after because of

school.” Kevin McGee: “I have spent valentine’s day with my mom for the past 18 years. It is a tradition for us to go to smashburger and see a movie.” Stefanie Trowbridge: “Before Valentine’s, I always try to find a guy to spend the day with. It works

Valentine’s Candy Poll

sometimes, and they take me out to dinner and buy me flowers. The guy that likes me right now wants to spend the whole day together, so I might skip school.” Chandler Whiteford: “I am going to spend Valentine’s with Travis Dixon. He said he has a surprise for me, so I am really excited to see what it is.”

Mrs. Dox: “My husband and I are going to Kemah to ride the ferris wheel.” Mrs. Lybrand: “I am going to school and the track practice after that. Later in the evening, I plan to go to dinner with my husband, Tripp.”

Keep Hollywood out of politics and politics in DC

Should celebrities use their fame to enforce their own political beliefs? #Spencer Osato, Stang Staff -

Big Names Making Big Statements politics has

become a star studded frenzy including actvist efforts from celebrities such as Alec Baldwin, and Arnold Scwartznegger (as pictured above).

Celebrities often have a big influence on society. Many of them have loyal followers who cling onto every word they say. Because of this, many celebrities try to use their star power to try to put a certain thought into people’s mind. For example, if a movie star supported Donald Trump during the election, then he or she may have came out and tried to convince people to vote for Trump. This attempt of political influence and persuasion of beliefs are often shown in different awards shows and ceremonies. However, many believe that this is not right for celebrities to do. They believe that people should have their own political or personal beliefs, and that the actors and celebrities should not use their star power to convince others to believe something else. But, many politicians go after celebrity support because of their star power. The celebrities can pull many over to a certain belief. However, as previously stated, that is also what some people do not like. Many do not want the beliefs of celebrities to influence others to believe something that may be controversial. One possible reason why celebrities and actors may believe they have political power is through labor unions like the Screen Actors Guild. The Screen Actors Guild is made up of people who have appeared in film and television (even if it is just a cameo or low budget

film or TV show). The people in the Guild are the ones who do things like vote on what film gets nominated for an Oscar and win the award, be an actor or have film roles, and many other things. Because of this power, many actors believe they can also have an influence in politics. According to an active member in the Screen Actors Guild, “Having T.V. Radio, Movies, Newspaper, internet, as a form to broadcast one’s belief can be a powerful tool... Many people see celebrities as being better, smarter, or richer. With that comes a sense of belief from fans on any subject their idol or hero from the big screen says.” One recent example of an actor trying to enforce political and personal beliefs on people was Meryl Streep at the Golden Globe Awards. After receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award (which recognizes people for great contributions to the entertainment world), Streep took the time to criticize President Trump during her speech. Although this is not unusual, she also took the time to criticize the National Football League and Mixed Martial Arts. She claimed that “...if you kick them [foreign celebrities and actors] all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are NOT the arts.” This statement angered many fans of the NFL and MMA, and several MMA figures responded to her comments. According to UFC president Dana White, “It’s (MMA) not gonna be everybody’s thing,...If you don’t like it, change the channel.” As a fan of MMA, I agree with Dana White. There are certain people who like different things. Just because some people do not like it does not mean that everyone has to dislike it. It is just a personal preference. I can take celebrities telling their personal political beliefs to pull others to a certain side (although I do not agree with her doing this), but I think that personal beliefs should be kept personal. Although many celebrities try to pull people to one side of politics, not every actor or celebrity agrees with this. Some of them do not think celebrities should try to influence personal or political beliefs. According to actor Mark Wahlberg, “A lot of celebrities did, do, and shouldn’t [talk politics],...They might buy your CD or watch your movie, but you don’t put food on their table. You don’t pay their bills.” He then went on to say, “A lot of Hollywood is living in a bubble. They’re pretty out of touch with the common person, the everyday guy out there

providing for their family.” In other words, he is saying that many celebrities do not understand what it is like to be a normal person away from the spotlight. According to a friend in the Screen Actors Guild, “Actors should act and politicians should politic. Some actors may not be as up to date on laws, policies, regulations, or religious beliefs as most politicians who do this for a living should be.” The celebrities know what they personally want, but not what is best for the entire nation or world. As stated before, I do not think that celebrities should try to influence the world of politics. I think that they have a right to say what they believe, but they should not try to convince others to believe the same thing. Just as Mark Wahlberg said, many celebrities are out of touch with the real world. By looking at other events besides politics, I believe that this statement is correct (for the most part). Many celebrities try and enforce personal beliefs, and put down others who disagree with them. This happens more often than not, and, in my opinion, it is not right. I believe that, while a celebrity can state personal or political beliefs, celebrities should not try to mold the world in their image. People should be free to live their lives. It is just like a regular person calling a homeless person lazy and that they should go get a job. The regular person does not know how hard it is for the homeless person to get a job, and most are not lazy. For them to get a job, they need a place to live, and not come in dirty every day. In other words, the regular person does not know what it is like to be homeless. In the same way, a famous celebrity may not know or remember how it is like to not be rich and famous. He or she may not remember what it is like to be an average person like you and I. The celebrity knows what he or she thinks is right, but it might not be good for everyone. According to a member in the Screen Actor’s Guild, “There is a freedom that is taken away as a celebrity that other human beings have. But also there is a freedom that is given being that celebrity that others never will experience. With this, celebrity life and their perception of life if different.” I believe that a celebrity should stick to his or her art form, and he or she should not get into the world of politics unless he or she is running for office or a government position.

The Voice of the people: Protesting Examining the effectiveness of protesting. #Emily Villarreal, Stang Staff In our societal social hierarchy, our individual efforts to voice our opinions seem a unheard shout into the void. But seen time and time again throughout history, when individuals rally together, the spirit of democracy is ignited and power is restored to the people, and thus began the practice of protesting. No one is denying the existence of protesting, but rather it’s overall effectiveness, and those who are so adamantly obstinate to compromising, hinders direct action from taking place and improving conditions. But in the midst of skeptics grumblings of it’s legitimacy, I believe history itself proves the integral role protesting and radical opposition itself, holds for making direct change and saving the the United States once again from modern institutionalized inequality. The generalized act of “Protesting” centers around the common man’s effort to disestablish the oppressive overarching power. Government is inherently corrupt because of humans innate self serving nature; thus, it is only expected that a leader, of any degree, would make a decision at some point without acknowledging the best interest of the followers. This is when it is necessary to rebalance the leader’s grip on power, and sometimes to even overthrow and reform an institutionally oppressive environment. If the voice of the people is being muted and unheard by their supervisor, protesting offers a form of peaceful defiance to take control of the general overall welfare. The implied authority of a single individual should not override the general people’s bare necessities, and their right to voice their grievances. I could go on and on of instances to assure you that at least to some extent, protestors have the ability to lead to wide-scale change. While one could argue these changes ultimately were products of a gradual process or societal shift, the issues were finally acknowledged when they were prioritized by government, and official when public uproar caused world wide attention. The institution of segregation did not collapse or come from compliance; it came from radical reform. And although I do not condone unnecessary violence, unfortunately political reform can call for it. For instance, a Kansas protest -led by radical abolitionist John Brown- incited one of the most media-sensationalized protests of the 1800’s, known as “Bleeding Kansas.” The single protest, the bloodshed, and the

terror inflicted on the armed citizens, ignited a conversation; a conversation about slavery in American homes and it legality in states, leading to the ignition of the Civil War. Yes it’s arguably unethical based on the civilian casualties tormented in this abolition-spirited protest, but it had indisputable impact on changing Taking A Stand Protesters made posters world- wide with the course of history and inciting a conversation on the eye catching slogans raising awareness to their political impact of racial tensions. And as Malcolm X so eloquently lamented,”You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has freedom,” showing the reality of what it takes to create a change. Take advantage of your constitutional rights; let your voice be heard. And if you make the active decision not to partake in protest, respect other’s ability to do so; regardless of wheher you agree with their platform. If their cause is deemed worthy in the eyes of the general population, it will in some form or another insight major change or awareness. Because when we begin to tolerate others expression instead of listening, freedom becomes a privilege one holds instead of a right we all have. Protesting is an active expression of this. Because, freedom -liberty which is a right of all men- triumphs over all.

Is Valentine’s Day a Hallmark Holiday?

9

Deciding if Valentine’s Day is a true holiday, or a business

#Emily Villarreal, Stang Staff

#Hope Cubbler, Stang Staff

Many pose the question as to whether or not Valentine’s Day is significant or not. Valentine’s Day seems to fit with many seemingly meaningless holidays that people have created and deemed important. Due to this, a plethora of couples choose not to participate in this designated day of love. While it is nice to share a fancy dinner, etc. with the one you love, why specifically on this day? Why do we need another day for celebration and spending money along with birthdays and anniversaries? I believe that Valentine’s Day is strictly for consumerism. This Hallmark holiday is just another way that businesses make profit off of buyers. People should appreciate and spoil their significant other any day of the week. This holiday is being used as an excuse to spend money and make women feel adored. The adoration from your spouse should not be decided on how much money he/she spends on you. In a relationship, the person should feel admired all of the time. As I said earlier. Valentine’s Day is continually being proven to be a consumerism holiday. Women abuse the day to “force” their spouse to buy them fancy things and take them out to dinner. While spoiling your partner is not a bad thing, by celebrating this day and splurging your paycheck on chocolate and roses, you are buying into this consumerism event. In conclusion, it is okay to celebrate Valentine’s Day if it makes you happy and you don’t mind being tricked into consumerism. In retrospect, if this fact infuriates you, maybe you and your loved one should have a serious conversation as to whether or not you want to stop celebrating this seemingly unimportant holiday.

Valentine’s Day: a ploy of corporate America profiting off their consumer’s genuine emotion and ingrained societal expectations or a genuine celebration of romantic love? As heavily debated as the sincerity of the holiday may be, I have chosen to see it as celebration of love; naive as that may be to some. Before you dismiss the holiday all together, I want you to consider the founding principle behind it’s creation: to celebrate love and the integral role it has in our society. Now ask yourself: based on the description alone, do the holiday’s intentions seem sinister? People will manipulate and misinterpret, but many individuals like myself respect the sanctity of love endorsed by such a holiday, holding the founding principles of V-day with a high regard. Of course there will be money-grubbing corporations trying to capitalize on the negligent boyfriend dashing to his local convenience store the night before, fumbling through an array of cheesy cards and sub par chocolate; only doing so out of sheer obligation and fear of the looming wrath of his significant other. Love isn’t defined by material objects, and neither is Valentine’s Day. So of course, one should cherish their significant other daily and make an effort to incorporate spontaneity and romance into your everyday relationship. The holiday’s purpose is not to diminish from that. I shame those who take advantage of the holiday for their own gain, but the overarching message of the holiday is still pure. It’s just a day of remembrance rejoicing in one of the most beautiful universal experiences. Valentine’s Day, like all things, is what you make it, and I choose to see it as hope.

Bachelor plot degrading to women? Opinions on the bachelor range from degrading to entertaining

#Hope Cubbler , Stang Staff Many tune in every Monday night to watch the latest extensive episode of the Bachelor. The show consists of typically twenty-five women in the beginning. The main goal is for the male to get engaged at the end of the series, and then get married. The man dates each and every one of the women at the same time in hopes of finding his soul mate. The show contains a lot of drama and heartbreak as the number of women continually dwindle as the weeks go on. There are many other types of series like the Bachelor such as: The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, Bachelor in Paradise: After Paradise, and Bachelor Pad. I personally just started watching the Bachelor this year. While the show is very entertaining, I do find the plot extremely degrading. The show teaches women that it is okay to watch the guy that you are supposedly “dating” make out with other women right in front of you. The fact that the show supports polygamy is disgusting to many. I do enjoy watching the show for the entertainment aspect and hilariousness of the series. I, myself would never participate in any aspect of the show. Whether I was the Bachelorette or a contestant in the Bachelor. I believe that dating should be between one man and one woman, not twenty-five women and one man. Also, the women have to live in the same house together during all

of this. The tensions arise as the show progresses because all of the women are dating the same man. Jealousy quickly arises in many of the girls as they do not get picked to go on a date with the Bachelor and have to stay at home. Junior Cameron Dasher Are Showmances Faux-mance Many specushared, “I don’t watch the bachelor late the sincerity of the show and if it promotes because it’s not a healthy environment healthy relationship expectations by placing women for women. It pits them against each against each other. other just for the hopes of trying to impress a guy they might end up marrying.” Many girls feel outnumbered and like the do not have a fair chance at a relationship. In conclusion, the Bachelor series infuriates many women. But, if you do not mind the degrading aspect of the show, it is hilarious and an enjoyable way to spend leisure time.

Love through different eyes Understanding one of life’s greatest pleasures #Emily Villarreal, Stang Staff Love is patient, love is kind, love is unexplainable. “Love,” the overarching concept of it, slips through our feeble mind’s comprehension. It truly is daunting to try to encapsulate what love is with a simple definition, but this hasn’t stopped many from trying. Scholars have defined love by sub category: “Eros” (sexual love), “Agape” (romantic love) and, “phileo” (platonic love). But today I’m going to focus on romantic love, “Agape” if you will. This is the kind of love that makes your heart flutter, and your ambitions take flight. The kind of love where companionship and intimacy are truly tested. The kind of love we all strive to find. Love is a vehicle to greater understanding of the world, thus it is why we as humans seek to find it in some capacity. Love of the romantic nature cannot be manufactured or copied like regurgitated gibberish rom-coms feed us. Holding love

to these unattainable faux ideals will find ourselves being highly disappointing, and deter us from the real love that is much more tender, much more deep. Love doesn’t need gimmicks to be magical. Love cannot be be defined so arbitrarily as a tender embrace or a kiss in the rain. It is in the moments onlookers don’t see that love truly flourishes. Love is holding your significant other’s hair back as he or she stands sea green in a waste basket. Love is beyond the outer surface and accepts the recipient for whom he/she is, regardless of their flaws, shortcomings or faults. Love is gross, beautiful, and every bit as heartbreaking as rewarding; but you can never truly understand until you experience it yourself. Love as a concept is beautifully abstract, and we can never truly define it. But from what we can observe and from what I can attest, love is emulated through compassion, attraction, emotional investment, alongside many other factors. But one can never truly begin to understand it’s inexplicable nature until they themselves have experienced it and the wonders it holds.

Best Films of 2016 Honored at 89th Annual Academy

Oscar Winners The 89th Academy awards provided the best actors with Oscar Awards. Winners are shown here.

When the nominations for Best Picture and the other nominations came out, some were disappointed to not see films such as Deepwater Horizon, Patriot’s Day, or even Deadpool nominated for any of the big awards. However, many predicted the film La La Land would win most of the big awards, as people say it was well made, highly praised by the critics, and even won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy. But, most said this did not necessarily mean the film would win anything. Fortunately for the film, it won 7 Oscars, but fell short of winning the Best Picture category, which went to Moonlight. Warren Beatty was handed the wrong card, and said that LaLa Land was the winner of Best Picture. After everyone from the show came up on stage, it was discovered that Moonlight was the real winner. Guess there’s a Steve Harvey in every show!

Best Actress in a Leading Role: Isabelle Huppert (Elle) Ruth Negga (Loving) Natalie Portman (Jackie) Emma Stone (La La Land) (WINNER) Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) (WINNER) Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea)

CBS Presents the 59th Annual Adele awards show Another year in music awards the artists are honored #Ehmry Ritsco, Stang Staff The 59th Annual Grammys took place on Sunday, February 12, 2017. The show this year had many legendary moments and surprise wins. Some of the big winners of the night include Adele, Chance the Rapper, and Beyonce. Some people were surprised by certain winners, but still showed much respect and happiness towards them. Adele did well at this year’s Grammys. She took home the awards for record of the year, album of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance, and best pop vocal album. Along with amazing people across the country, she also inspired. During her acceptance speech of the album of the year award, Adele let the world know she believed Beyonce deserved the award. She said, “I can’t possibly accept this award and I’m very humble and gracious but the artist of my life is Beyoncé and the Lemonade album was just so monumental and so well thought out and so beautiful and soul-baring.” Beyonce was vividly emotional in crowd and is said to have mouthed the words “I love you” to the award winner Adele. Adele finished off her speech by

snapping her Grammy in half and giving a piece to Beyonce. Beyonce was also recognized for her amazing performance that night. Even while being pregnant with twins, she did not fail to amaze. She performed a combination of two songs from her album Lemonade. The performance was inspired by African, Hindu, and Roman goddesses that empower women. Another event of the night featured artist, Chance the Rapper. Chance went home with the award for best new artist. This was shocking to some other artists, but his fans were overjoyed. News of this hit twitter almost instantly. He also received awards for best rap performance and best rap album. Some people found this strange, since he is such a new artist. Also every year the Grammys honors those who were lost to the music industry in the past year. This year George Michael, Prince, Joey Feek, and Christina Grimmie were honored at the show through a tribute to their success. John Legend and Cynthia Erivo performed this tribute, keeping the memory of these artists alive.

Several other artists won awards that night including, Twenty One Pilots, Cage the Elephant, Flume, Beyonce, and more. 2016 was an impressive year for the music industry, which is proven by such a large variety of artists receiving awards. Music hopes to see many new artists join the industry in the coming year and be honored at next year’s Grammy awards.

The Grammys The 59th Academy awards are providing the best actors with Grammy Awards. The best musical artists perform and are presented with awards.

2017 Celebrity Relationships

11

How serious are these celebrity couples? #Brittany McVaugh, Stang Staff Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds This couple has been together for almost 6 years and married for 5 years. This couple did not wait long to tie the knot, but did use their marriage of five years to have two kids. This couple met while on the set of the movie “The Green Lantern”. Although this seems like a simple meeting, which led to their 5 year marriage, their relationship was a little more complicated to begin with. Mariah Carey & Bryan Tanaka This couple is a new fling, which begun within the last few weeks. Bryan Tanaka has been Mariah’s back up dancer for many performances, which seemingly led to more than a business relationship. Will either of the relationships last? Jay Z & Beyonce This couple has been long lasting for a good 15 years. The couple recently had a baby and are now

expecting twins! Selena Gomez & Abel Tesfaye This famous duo are both successful singers/ songwriters in the music business. Selena’s new boy is known as “the weekend.” They have been together for a year and recently made it official through instagram. Ariana Grande & Mac Miller This couple has been together for three years. These two are both well known famous singers and performers. Jennifer Lopez & Drake J-Lo and Drake have been officially dating after her divorce from a 4 year marriage. This couple have been dating for a good three years and are going strong. Although J-Lo could be known as a rebound, because of Drake’s breakup with Rihanna.

Legos build on movie screens once again for superhero action The Lego Batman Movie shows why many kids and adults love Batman and Legos #Spencer Osato, Stang Staff Many often say that kids movies should be for everyone. In other words, a “kids” movie should really be a “family” movie. This is mainly because parents are often dragged to a movie by their kids, so the adults should be kept entertained. One movie that recently came out that did just this was The LEGO Batman Movie. I got the chance to see this movie, and I was surprised. Before I get into my review of the film, here is a brief run-down of the plot with (hopefully) no spoilers. The film follows Bruce Wayne/Batman (played by Will Arnett) as he tries to stop the Joker (played by Zach Galifianakis) from taking over the city of Gotham. However, Bruce Wayne’s ego gets in the way of the fight. Since he is Batman, he thinks that he can take down all of Joker’s army (which includes classic villains such as Voldemort, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, King Kong, Godzilla, Harley Quinn, Killer Kroc, Condiment Man, Mothman, and many others). Since Batman is greatly outnumbered, he is forced to try to put aside his ego and let others help him. This includes having to work with people like his unintentionally adopted son Dick Grayson (also known as Robin/Nightwing) (played by Michael Cera), new police chief Barbara Gordon (also known as Batgirl) (played by Rosario Dawson), his own personal butler Alfred J. Pennyworth (played by Ralph Fiennes), and many other classic, wacky, and memorable characters from the DC Comics universe. Before I get into what I loved about the film, here are a few things I did not like about it. First, the movie is in the Lego universe. While I am ok with this (since Legos are awesome), I can see why others might not like it. It can get a little hard on the eyes at times. Also, since it is a family movie, there will be a

lot of kids in the theater with you (if you see it in theaters). I did, of course, and there were plenty of loud, annoying kids around me. Some were crying at the start of the movie, and I remember one next to me doing a weird clapping thing with his hands whenever a part he liked came up. I am not saying I hate kids, but I do not like them in a movie where I am trying to fall into it and I keep getting taken out the film universe. Also, the movie does take a sharp turn towards the middle. If you see it, you will understand. At one point, it goes from being very funny and fast paced to being serious and a little slow. Also, it is based on a toy line/video game series. Looking back, many movies that are made for marketing often do not succeed. However, this was a good movie. Lastly, it had to follow up the surprisingly good LEGO Movie. In my opinion, The LEGO Batman Movie was not as good as The LEGO Movie, but it was better than Batman v. Superman. Now that I said what I hated about the movie, here is what I love about it. First, it was a sequel to awesome LEGO Movie. It was a great follow-up, and kept me entertained. Second, it was one of the best Batman movies I have ever seen. For me to say that is a great accomplishment, especially after the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight series. To me, this was the second or third best Batman movie (behind The Dark Knight, of course). Third, the movie was extremely funny. The LEGO Batman Movie was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. It had many memorable jokes and gags, with most of the adult jokes flying right over the kid’s heads (which made some of the jokes even more funny). I especially loved the moments between Robin and Batman. Their conflicting personalities were funny to watch. Not only that, but it was also

a great spoof movie. It has been a while since we have had a relatively well-liked spoof comedy, and this film delivered on that aspect. The LEGO Batman Movie even went as far as to parody the recent Batman V. Superman film. There were even callbacks to the old Batman TV Series from the 1960’s (shark repellent anyone). In other words, the movie was very self-aware, and took advantage of that fact by making it a parody of other Batman and DC Comics property. Lastly, the movie had a good, positive message. It taught kids that sometimes it is better to work together than to work alone. Batman could not take on the Joker and his army by himself, so he had to give in and work

with others to save Gotham City. The LEGO Batman Movie was an enjoyable, family-friendly movie that can be enjoyed by anyone. There are jokes that will make both the adults and the kids crack up, and it has a feel-good ending. Although it is not a perfect movie, it is still a fun one. If you liked The LEGO Movie, you will like The LEGO Batman Movie. In the end, I will give The LEGO Batman Movie 7.5 out of 10 Houston Christian Mustangs.

Lego Batman Lego Batman is a 2017 kids favorite movie. The reviews were great and kids loved it!
