more will politicians complain about something and not do anything about it...Now is the time for action.” Some things that Trump’s supporters want Donald Trump to do while President is for him to build a wall separating the United States and Mexico, to get rid of Obamacare, and many others. In short, many Americans want change. They want a better economy, more jobs, better healthcare, better protection of foreign borders, and many other things. President Donald Trump said, “Every decision will be made by the people to make the country great again...we will bring back our borders, bring back our wealth, and bring back our dreams,” and “...we will hire Americans and buy American [products]” People want the power to do what they believe is correct, and the way to do this is through the government. According to President Trump, “We are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to you, the people...January 20th, 2017, will be the day that is remembered as the day the people are the rulers of this nation again.” Trump promises that the people will have more control over the decisions in the government. Trump said, “Read what I am saying, you will not be ignored again.” People want change, and many think that Trump will deliver it to them. Although many support Trump, there are others who did not want Trump anywhere near the White House. Some even hope that Trump will be impeached. This comes from the belief that Trump is racist, sexist, and prejudiced. One thing that many could see as contradictory is when Trump said, “We will eradicate all Muslim terrorists” in his inauguration speech. However, in the same speech, he also said “there is no room for prejudice.” Some think this is contradictory because not all Muslims are terrorists, Trump’s Inauguration.. Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United and the first statement could be seen as prejudice. But, nothing can be done to change States. This day is special to inductees because it starts their time of being a recognized leaders at Houston Christian. Juniors and Sophomores take on Cotillion A plethora of schools come together for an elegant dance

# Hope Cubbler, Stang Staff On January 7, many Junior girls along with their escorts, attended cotillion. This dance is similar to prom, but is also combined with students from other schools. The girls wear elegant gowns, while the boys wear tuxedos, and the dance is a girls asks guys event. The schools that attended this year’s cotillion were: Houston Christian, Second Baptist, Memorial, Lamar, and Duchesne. Cotillion is comprised of dancing, food, and a dj. Every year there is a theme for the dance, with this year’s being “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” This year, cotillion was held at the Marriott Marquis downtown. This dance was said to be the first event held at this recently opening plaza. Sophomores also have the opportunity to attend cotillion. Their dance is held at the Marriott as well, but takes place on January 14. Sadly, freshmen and seniors do not have the ability to attend cotillion. The only exception is if a Junior or Senior girl asks a guy who is not in their specific grade to be their escort. While there are many schools that attend cotillion, the variety of students is said to be refreshing. Rhianna Bruegger, a junior at Second Baptist, stated, “Cotillion was so much fun!

Getting to hang out with friends from other schools while still hanging out with my school is awesome. It’s a great opportunity to get to know other people from around Houston.” Mary Claire Wilson from Lamar said, “I love how cotillion has other schools incorporated in the event so I can see all my friends that don’t go to my school and have fun with them, too.” The dance welcomes a variety of students and creates an enjoyable environment for all who attend. Junior Rebekah Brazelton said, “Cotillion was a lot of fun! It was cool being with my friends from HC and also getting to see my friends from other schools!!” Many enjoyed the opportunity to attend a dance where it was not with students solely from their school. Students from a vast majority of schools said they had a blast at cotillion. Ricky Escobar said, “The most enjoyable part of cotillion was getting to spend time with my friends and making fools out of ourselves.” The room the dance was held in was large and consisted of lounging areas, a dance floor, and eating arrangements. The ballroom was comprised of tiffany blue decor and an aura of sophistication. The dj

was on a lifted stand at the front of the dance floor and was enjoyed by many. Because of the popular tunes the the dj played, everyone eventually found their way to the dance floor. Preston Swiggart shared, “My favorite part of cotillion was watching Sean Kerrigan bust out new moves that drew everyone off of the dance floor to watch.” A variety of

students tended to express themselves on the dance floor with their interesting dance moves. In conclusion, cotillion is a wonderfully fun event that many recommend. Many say it truly was a night to remember, and was enjoyable for a large number of individuals.

HC says goodbye to two beloved staff With heavy hearts students and falculty say goodbye to two of the school’s finest # Emily Villareal, Stang Staff “As one door closes, another door opens”. This is the mantra embraced by many as we venture into a new year, and a new semester- more specificallyat Houston Christian high school. A plethora of new opportunities arises for students, and especially for two very special faculty members here at HC. Beloved barista, Corey Gillette ,and adult chaplain, Mike Maddry announced their departure for other employment opportunities, and advancements in their careers. Mr. Maddry loyally served at Houston Christian for 10 years, and enriched the lives of hundreds of students. Mr. Maddry truly leads by example and is the quintessence of a “man of Christ.” Mr. Maddry has stumbled upon to the opportunity to impact even more people, as he has been given the opportunity to be a head pastor at Grace Bible Church. According to Mr. Maddry, the church is located “-in the Heights and has a great number of young couples and families.” And for his own hope of how he impacted on HC? Well, his “hope is that the young men in our school got to see a man who is passionate about pursuing Christ, loving his family, learning the scriptures, and living a lifestyle that is one of service, care, and sacrifice. I expect a few of those I was able to spend time with will take seriously the call to disciple others. That would mean I was successful at what I did.” Even that short excerpt from him embodies everything Mike’s ministry brought to our school: fellowship,

community, and a whole lot of love. Regardless of where both their careers take Corey Gillette, frequently referred to by them, they will always be immortalized as a “Houston students and faculty alike as “Correy The Coffee Christian Stang,” and will always be members of the Guy,” made his mark on HC in his 4 and a half years HC family. Corey will be taking the head position of a food service director at a high school in Austin. Instead of being fearful of the uncertainty aligned with new beginnings, Corey has taken on his new endeavor with a great sense of hopefulness, stating, ‘’[he] was ready to move on but of course he had nerves behind it.” Although Corey is excited about what his future has in store, he fondly remembers his time Sad Goodbye Staff members Mike Maddry (left) and Corey Gillete (right) spent at HC. Behind the “Curtains” with the Stage Manager

Person in charge of all that goes on with the musical, Tatum Lee, answers questions about upcoming show

# Jasmine Mata, Stang Staff What is this year’s musical, and what is it about? This year’s musical is Curtains, a comedy murder mystery set in the 1950s. It follows the story of a failing musical company who discover their star has been murdered right before opening night. Lt. Cioffi comes to investigate, leading the cast on a chase to find the culprit and fix the show before it opens. Who are the leads and what role do they play? Andre Napier plays Lt. Cioffi, the main detective in the case. Caroline Pearce plays Carmen, the producer of the show. Emma Brown and Cole Little play Georgia and Aaron, formerly married composers who are working on the show together. Cameron Dasher plays Niki Harris, an actor and Lt. Cioffi’s love interest. Miho Maeda plays Carmen’s daughter, Bambi, another actor. Sam Whitaker plays Oscar, the show’s sponsor and Alex Dye plays Bobby, the show’s choreographer.

What has been the most challenging part of putting on this musical? The most challenging part of this show has definitely been the big dance numbers. Curtains is a dance heavy show, leaving the chorus and leads with a ton of choreography to learn. The show also incorporates a lot of different dance styles in its musical numbers. As a senior, do you feel as though you are even more of a leader with the group as opposed to previous years? This year we have a really strong group of seniors in the cast and crew, so there’s a lot more senior leadership than previous years. We all work really hard making the theatre department feel like a family and incorporating everyone into the show. Curtains is our last musical at HC, so I feel we’re really excited to make it the best we can.

DSP’s does a Summer Viewing The Scholar class of 2018 views many programs to create questions

Over the summer break, the Scholar class of 2018 viewed numerous movies and television shows to practice formulating research questions in order to prepare for their upcoming thesis work. Through the summer viewing assignment, Scholars were

exposed to social, economic, philosophical, and governmental issues and ideas of the vast topics occurring in the world today. A few of the movies and television shows included Good Will Hunting, The Imitation Game, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, All in the Family, and Downton Abbey.

The Scholar Class was also exposed to two different podcasts: Physics of the Future and The Partially Examined Life. Although these were interesting, Downton Abbey became the class favorite - especially for Jake and Sierra. Jake found the rigid class divisions of the 1900s very interesting, while Sierra enjoyed learning about the mourning practices and what socially defined a scandal. Although Downton Abbey was quite educational, Camille found it exciting to keep up with the romantic relationships on the show. Fellow Scholar Courtney Cossey stated, “My favorite was Good Will Hunting! I found the theme of vulnerability to be both interesting and heartbreaking.” Ryan found his

current research topic from watching Good Will Hunting and became inspired by the thrill-seeking behavior of Will Hunting himself. The Scholars collectively agreed they learned new things about culture and political issues, helping them formulate problem statements for further research. Sam Shapiro, a budding class leader, stated “I wish more classes had viewing and discussion based summer assignments. It’s more fun, and I actually learned more.” The Scholar Class of 2018 has enjoyed their summer viewing and looks forward to applying lessons learned from viewing to real world situations.

Biggest football game of the year is right around corner NFL playoff results and game breakdowns leading to Super Bowl LI # by Spencer Osato, Stang Staff After a long season, the NFL Super Bowl is just around the corner. Many Americans and other people around the world tune in to watch the championship game each year. Even people who do not like sports may watch the game for the funny commercials and the Super Bowl Half-Time Show. The battle lines have been set, and many are prepared for an intense game of football. Although many cannot wait for the Super Bowl, there has also been numerous disappointed fans. In the first round of the playoffs, the teams who were not fortunate enough to get the bye in the playoffs played in the wild card round. The first game of the playoffs (on January 7) saw the Houston Texans (the number four seed) face off against the Oakland Raiders (the number five seed) at NRG Stadium. Houston fans were happy by the end of the game, as the Texans delivered a blowout to the Raiders 27-14. Later that day, in the NFC, the Seattle Seahawks handily defeated the Detroit Lions 26-6. The next day, the Pittsburgh Steelers (the number three seed) faced off against the Miami Dolphins (the number six seed). The result of this game was important for every team in the AFC division of the playoffs. If the Dolphins won, then the Texans would have to face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, and the Dolphins would have to face the New England Patriots. However, if the Steelers won, then the Texans would have to face the Patriots, and the Steelers would face the Chiefs. In the end, the game was another blowout by the Steelers, who defeated the Dolphins 30 to 12. Later that day, the New York Giants (the number 5 seed in the NFC) faced off against the Green Bay Packers (the number four seed). At the end, a fourth blowout was delivered to the Giants, as Green Bay defeated them 38-13. After the wild card games, the divisional round came along. On January 14, the first game of the round was played. The game saw NFC teams the Seattle Seahawks face off against the Atlanta Falcons (the number two seed). Although it was not a blowout, the Falcons defeated the Seahawks 36-20. After this game was played, people saw the Houston Texans face

off against the New England Patriots (the number one seed). Although the Patriots were heavily favored to win the game, many Texans fans kept hopes alive that their team could pull out the miracle (even with Brock Osweiler as Quarterback instead of Tom Savage). The Texans played their hearts out, and seemed like they might even pull ahead and get the win. The Texans defense were able to hold back the Patriot’s offense for most of the game and were able to give Tom Brady lots of pressure, causing him to make some bad throws (he even threw two interceptions). Athletes share their most embarassing moments in their sport # by Sara Wray, Stang Staff Anonymous athlete: “During a cross country race, I went to the bathroom in my pants, with a mile left to run. I did finish the race, but it was one of the most uncomfortable and embarrassing moments of my life.”

Miller McNew: “Right before my race I had to the bathroom really bad. I didn’t have enough time to go to the bathroom, and ended up peeing down my leg the whole race.”

Matthew Casagrande: “When I was playing the girls in basketball, Brooke Malia tried to post me up, and she tripped on my foot and fell to the floor. I broke my foot, and she hurt herself. We did not win the game against them.”

Thomas Vassar: “I ran into the catcher during a baseball game and broke my nose, I have never cried so hard in my life.”

Lexi Edwards: “Sophomore year, my whole family came to watch me cheer at the football game, and my bases tried to put me up in a prep. When they did this, their hands slipped and I fell face first onto the track. I laid there yelling for someone to call 911, but they wouldn’t, so I ran off crying. I have never been so embarrassed.” Abby Hepburn: “During a soccer game freshman year, I thought the ball went out of bounds, so I picked it up to throw it in. Turns out, the ball was still in bounds, and it got turned over to the other team because I touched it. My whole family was ashamed of me and my boyfriend broke up with me due to embarrassment. This was one of the worst days of my life.”

Mack Watson: “The first soccer game of the season, I begged my coach to let me try out as goalie. This didn’t end well, because every ball that came my direction hit me directly in the face. I was so embarrassed because after the game the girl I really liked said we couldn’t continue to talk anymore.” Jax Whittington: “I was trying to dribble the basketball in a game, and I did it under my legs. When I did that, the ball came up and hit me right in the groin. I was so embarrassed and fell to the ground with tears in my eyes. I thought I wouldn’t be able to have kids.” Andrew Ligon: “One time when I was high jumping, I went over the bar and landed on my track spikes. I thought I was bleeding out and that I would die right in

that moment. I realized it wasn’t that bad, and I am so embarrassed for how much I overreacted.” Patrick Hurley: “In a basketball practice, I got really upset because every shot I took I missed. All my friends were playing so well, but I just couldn’t. I was having a bad day and was about to break down in tears. I decided I would take one more shot, and, of course, I missed. Since I do have anger problems, I ran to the wall and punched it as hard as I could. I broke my hand and was so embarrassed.”

Girls soccer team continues season with many wins

The girl’s soccer season began in November with a weeklong tryout session. The girl’s coach, Danny O’Callahan, watched the girls for a week and made the decision on who would make the Varsity team, and who would make the Junior Varsity. After the week of tryouts, there ended up being two very strong teams. The Varsity team is led by seven seniors who help lead the team to victory time and

time again. According to senior player, Jordyn Behan, “The team we have this season is the best team I have been a part of in all my four years of playing soccer at Houston Christian. I really enjoy the girls I play with and there is a great team dynamic between all of us.” The girl’s record so far consists of 6 wins and 4 losses, thanks to their great coach Danny. According to the players, Danny is very supportive

of the girls and helps them improve on their skills which helps them win do well in their games. Senior and one of the captains Nicole Welsh says, “I have really enjoyed leading the girls this year as captain, and I think we will continue to do well in our season and finish off the season with a great record.”

Girl’s Soccer As many expected, the girl’s soccer team has been doing exceptionally well this season. They are looking good heading into the end of the season with only four losses.

5 Ways to have a better year Here are five simple lifestyle practices to spice up the New Year # by Emily Villarreal, Stang Staff 1. Go into the new year with a positive attitude There’s a huge difference between being realistic with what is attainable in the new year and what is blatantly pessimistic. Going into the new year with a grim demeanor will only predetermine your overall years outcome. In fact, studies have shown that people who have constant negative thoughts and continuously expect the worse have been proven to subconsciously self sabotage themselves and predestine themselves to negative outcomes. So lighten up! Try to look on the bright side this year. 2. Set realistic goals in the new year As the clock strikes midnight, we are often filled with overwhelming hope and a grand environment of how this will be your year. We place so much emphasis on change in the new year and outlandish claims of self-betterment, yet hold no grasp of a plan of action to attain these goals. Instead of focusing all hope in the possibilities in new year, realize all change begins from within you and you are the only person that can proactively change your life. Being able to recognize your strengths and weaknesses will help you make attainable goals to better your life. Attainable goals will prevent one’s development of a defeatist attitude when they can’t reach goals because they’ve set their self standards too high. 3. Surround yourself with friends that lift you up, and speak words of positivity This one is crucial to your overall well being and

one’s feeling of purpose in life. Humans are social by nature, but we often attract the kind of people we think we deserve or subconsciously the kind of people we wish we could be. Evaluate how you view yourself and the people in your life. If they are negatively affecting you in a provenly unfixable way, try to distance yourself, you don’t need that kind of draining energy near you. You should never stay friends because you feel emotionally obligated. Your mental health should come first and foremost. Make sure to cherish the ones you love. As the saying goes, “what goes around comes around”. 4. Invest your spare time into a passion project Find a hobby you really enjoy and engulf yourself in it. Making sure to spend time focusing on your well being. Passion projects drive us to work harder and pushes us to better ourselves while doing something we enjoy. Hobbies open doors to meeting a variety of new people with common interests, and give us unique opportunities to get us out of the funk of an everyday routine. Developing a skill not only boost our self confidence, but it improves our overall happiness and the way we function. 5. Reassess your priorities Reassessing your priorities will allow you to figure out what’s really important in your life, and allow you to reinvest time you have saved from cutting out extraneous activities. This will install a new found purpose in your life and rebalance you as a whole, sending you on a clear trajectory to a successful new year and new life as a whole.

Have a postive attitude... about going into the new year! There are many ways your year can be brightened by being proactive! Release your stress and enjoy yourself this year. You can do it!

Do New Year’s Resolutions Work? Varying opinions on the effectiveness of New Year Goals.

#Hope Cubbler & Ehmry Ritsco, Stang Staff

New Years Resolutions Are resolutions worth the

trouble? Make a list of your New Year resolutions and try the challenge of giving up something you love.

EHMRY: Year after year when New Year’s comes around people make resolutions that they hope to keep in the coming year. These resolutions often range from health to very personal problems that people want to improve on. This traditions has been going on for many years. Another tradition like this is the act of setting goals for oneself. A resolution can just be seen as another goal. When people set goals for themselves it is easier for them to plan to reach them. People always say, “New year, new me.” I think this is a great example of the type of spirit the new year gives people. They believe the new year means they can start over and this gives them motivation. Resolutions give them a way to use this motivation. Overall, I think resolutions are a good outlet for the motivation that often comes with the celebration of the new year. Although some people are skeptical about whether or not they actually work, I think they do. People set realistic goals and create steps to achieve them. If it weren’t for these resolutions some people would never actually make these goals.

HOPE: New Year resolutions are a trend that started with the Babylonians. Resolutions were originally held in March, but eventually the Romans changed them to start in January. Many people participate in writing down a list of improvements or things they want to get done in the new year, and entitle it “resolutions.” Personally, I do not think that resolutions are effective due to the laziness of most individuals. Resolutions simply are people trying to create a better version of themselves in their mind. The main issue with resolutions is that people will create goals that are outrageously unachievable such as: losing 30 pounds in a week, becoming a millionaire, and getting married by twenty-one . In my opinion, New Year’s resolutions are a waste of time. I do not understand why people set goals for the year if they either never end up doing them. People who set resolutions in January and actually keep them should implement this system of setting goals into other areas of their life. Essentially, resolutions only work for the people who truly try.

Monster becomes emotional instead of scary in new film A Monster Calls makes audiences emotionally engrossed and shedding tears

#Spencer Osato, Stang Staff For the most part, books and movies have gone together like peanut butter and jelly. The translation of the famous story to the screen can be spectacular if done right. If done correctly, the film could please fans of the novel as well as new audience members that are unfamiliar with the story. Recently, I was able to see a film adaptation of a novel I have read and loved called A Monster Calls. I was excited to finally see this film when it came to a theater near me, and it was certainly an experience. A Monster Calls follows Conor O’Malley (played by Lewis MacDougall), a young British boy who is bullied and whose mother (played by Felicity Jones) has cancer. Conor is very close to his mother, and wants to keep his hope alive that his mother will pull through. Also, if his mother dies, he will be forced to live with his strict grandmother (played by Sigourney Weaver), with whom he has very little in common with. In this situation, Conor cannot live with his father (played by Toby Kebbell) because he lives in America, while Conor lives in the United Kingdom. Because Conor is in denial about his future, a monster (played by Liam Neeson) comes to Conor one night. The monster tells Conor that he will tell him three stories, one every day. However, after the three tales are told, Conor must tell the monster the tale of Conor’s nightmare. In the end, the monster uses the surreal tales to teach Conor life lessons First, for fans of the book, there are some parts that are not included in the story. For example, there are certain characters in the book that are not even mentioned in the film. However, when I think more about it, I can see why the filmmakers decided to take them out. While the characters did add a little character to some of the main characters in the story, some of those supporting characters could have not even been in the novel, and nothing would have changed. In other words, the movie is not a shotfor-shot adaptation of the novel. Second, the story is very depressing. If you do not like sad movies, then I would advise skipping out on this one. Third, from what I saw, the film did not have a very good North American marketing campaign. I mean, the only reason I knew about this

movie was because I had the book. I do not think I ever saw a trailer for it on TV or in the movie theater. I did see the trailer, but that was only after I looked it up on YouTube. Although the movie made a lot of money overseas, I think it could have made even more if it had better marketing in North America. Now that the negatives about A Monster Calls are out of the way, here is what I loved about the movie. First, the movie was a faithful adaptation of the novel. Although some characters were taken out, most of what happens in the movie happened in the book. If you read the book, you will probably be able to look past the little changes in the movie. I was a big fan of the novel, and, from what I remember, the movie was almost the exact same as the book. I was not sure if A Monster Calls would be accurate to the book (as many people are when they see a movie adaptation of a book they liked). But, when I found out that the person who wrote the book also wrote the screenplay, I knew that the movie would be a faithful adaptation of the book. Second, the visual effects, makeup, and cinematography was amazing. I loved the dark British feel of the setting. The book’s setting was dark and dreary (if you know literary symbolism, you should know what that usually means). I would almost describe the setting as gothic with a modern British touch. As relating to the visual effects, the monster was almost exactly how the book described it to be. The best way to describe the monster to you is to think of Groot from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, but make him about three stories tall, very wise and verbose, and sounding like Liam Neeson. Also, as I stated before, I loved the makeup in the movie. Although there is only one part in the film that would really need noticable makeup to pull off the effect, it was good enough to get a mention in my review. These parts were the moments when Felicity Jones was on screen. As stated before, she plays a mother who has cancer. In each scene, she looks worse and worse. The makeup department working on this film really made you believe that she had cancer that was getting worse. She just looked more and more sick in each scene, and I was

amazed by how they were able to pull that effect off. Third, the story was incredible. It just brings you in, and does not let go until the movie is over. I was so engrossed in the film that thirty minutes felt like ten minutes. Same goes for the book. I mean, I read the book in two days (the book is about 205 pages long). The story just puts you in a stranglehold and holds you there for the entire journey. In fact, the film drew me in so much that there were certain parts during the movie in which I actually forgot I was watching a movie! There was actually a point in the movie during which I thought to myself “Oh right, I forgot I was watching a movie.” It felt like what was going on on the screen was actually happening in front of my very eyes. I have seen many movies in my lifetime, but I think this was the first movie that I actually forgot I was watching a movie. This brings me to the third thing I loved about the movie: the acting. If it was not for the superb acting of the entire cast, I probably would not have been as engrossed in the film as I was. But, I have to give props to 14-year-old Lewis MacDougall (who played Conor O’Malley). He had to carry most of this movie. If he was not as good, the movie may not have been as good. However, he was amazing in his role, and I think he has a bright future ahead of him. Lastly, the film made me emotionally engulfed. Although I did say this could be a negative for some, I am also making it a positive. If you do not mind letting the tears flow in exchange for a great piece of entertainment, then I would suggest you go out and see this movie. But, if you decide to go with some friends, I would suggest going with people that you feel comfortable letting your emotions out with. Because I knew this would be a depressing story, I decided to see this movie by myself, and I am happy I did that. I was able to be alone with my emotions, and express them in whatever way I wanted. I will admit, I did let out some man tears during the movie. Even though I knew what was coming, I could not help but feel sad and let my emotions take control over me. According to YouTuber Jeremy Jahns, “In terms of the movie’s themes and how it deals

with it and the stories that the tree gives and the tree itself, I thought everything really came together well in here...It was a beautiful movie with a really heavy message.” Out of every movie I have ever seen, there was only one other movie that actually made me cry, which was the 2007 film I Am Legend. If you love movies that will make you cry, I would suggest you go out and see A Monster Calls. A Monster Calls was an unforgettable cinematic experience. It was a faithful adaptation of a book I loved (and I hate reading), and was the second movie I have seen that made me cry. I was so emotional after the movie that I just went straight to my car and sat inside it for about a minute, thinking about what I just saw. You could say that I was in a sort of trance after the movie was over. I mean, the only reason I turned the car on and left instead of sitting there longer was because I was cold and wanted to go home and do something that will make me less sad. Because of how depressing the story was, I am not sure I would buy the movie on Blu-Ray when it comes out. Nothing against the film itself, but I am not sure if I can take that kind of good sadness again. But, again, if you like tearjerking movies, I advise you to see this film. I will give A Monster Calls 10 out of 10 Houston Christian Mustangs.

Parenting can be taken to extreme for college students

How involved should parents be in their college child’s life?

#Hope Cubbler Stang Staff

Many students tend to desire attending a college close to home to have the convenient amenities that their parents provide such as food and laundry. Due to this popular trend in college students, the question then arises, “How far is too far with parenting your child in college?” The involvement of parents in their young adult children’s life varies on the type of family the college student has come from. Another factor of parents being in close relation to their child is which college their student attends, and how far away it is from home. Students who are new to college may enjoy having their parents in such close proximity and

it could provide a sense of security and familiarity to the child. Otherwise, a student who has attended college for a decent amount of time may find their parents becoming overbearing. Parents can seem oppressive to their college student in multiple different ways such as: depicting who heir child dates in college, what friends their kid makes, and what they major in. One of the more extreme cases heard is when a parent’s child does not get the desired grade they thought they deserved on an assignment, and their parents get so infuriated that they call the professor and bicker with them about their kid’s grade.

Isabella Jaeggi, an HC alumni and former Newspaper staffer said, “ My mom is not involved in my college life, and I definitely would not be okay with her talking to my professors. If I don’t perform well in my classes and I end up doing the wrong things instead of focusing on my classwork, then my mom would get very involved in my life. Besides that aspect, she trusts me and knows that I will do my work.” Many college students agree with Isabella, and would not want their parents getting too involved in their life. Senior Shelby Krummel said, “I love my parents, but I do not want them to be too involved in my college education.

I am ready to be independent and go off to college on my own.” Seniors in high school and college students alike do not want an excess of parenting while they are in college. A plethora of parents whose students are in college tend to overwhelm their child and become a lot to handle. There definitely is a way that parents can become too involved in their kid’s life, and should take heed not to become overbearing.

The Extent of Social Acceptance Would you go through hazing to join a group? HC students leave for collegeThe senior

#Ehmry Ritsco, Stang Staff According to the dictionary, hazing is “the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation”. This ritual has been around as long as the joining of groups has been a part of history. In modern times, it has become more frequent in sports team and when joining a fraternity or sorority. Hazing is not morally correct to participate in, but most people do anyway. Personally, if I were to go through hazing, it would depend on the situation. Since I am going to college next year, I will most likely experience this when rushing for a sorority. I want to join a sorority, but before I do I would research extensively in order to justify going through such tasks. At a more general level, if I was trying to simply join a friend group, I would not put myself through this experience. If a group of people expects me to prove myself to them through ridiculous tasks, then they are not going to be my true friends. I

understand if it has something to with trust, but most hazing is not this way. Hazing can affect people’s emotions and self esteem in a negative way. I think it also depends on gender. When girls are hazed by sororities, the pledges are made fun of for their appearance, clothes, weight, or other things. This type of criticism affects girls very deeply. On the other hand, the type of hazing guys experience is much less detrimental. It is still ridiculous, but not as much self-esteem lowering. As I said before, hazing is really never okay. Although it is not okay, I understand why some people go through it. The world is a hard place, and sometimes to get what you really want you face challenges that seem over the top. Hazing is sure to be around for the rest of our lives. The way someone faces this challenge is up to him or her and his or her situation. In places where hazing is bad, some action should be taken to make it stop, but for now it must be dealt with and looked down upon.
