Michael Ross of the Boardwalk Bar Passes Away

resh on the heels of our special edition, A Day in the Life of Gay South Florida, we were visited by Wilton Manors Main Street two weeks ago. Coincidentally, it seems, they were preparing a photo feature titled ‘A Day in Wilton Manors.’

he LGBT community in South Florida lost a legend late last week as Michael Ross passed away Thursday Jan, 12. Michael was dance manager at Boardwalk Bar for the past 2 years and served as a life long coach and pageant judge to the local drag community.

Legendary Drag icon, Nikki Adams released a statement on her Facebook Page Thursday which read, “Today is a very sad, sad day,” where responses flooded in with an outpouring of sympathy remarks and postings from the LGBT community nationwide. Michael assisted Nikki throughout her successful pageant and remarkable drag career and the two remained close for decades. His spirit will live on forever through the incomparable talents of Nikki.

Tom Tabor, the vice president of the group, along with a small corps of volunteers, went around town Jan. 5, and took shots of our community at work.Wilton Manors, is, of course, where SFGN is based.

It’s our hometown, a small neighborhood of local business, very much LGBT centric.

The photos were taken from early in the morning to late at night, capturing everyone from haircutters to firefighters.

As we are delivering the paper this Wednesday, Jan. 18, so too will their photo collage be going public, at a luncheon held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manor Restaurant and Entertainment Complex on Wilton Drive. Realistically, you may be reading this paper too late to have been at the event, but here is a mini photo collage for you. And the results of their noble efforts are all online at wiltonmanorsmainstreet.org/focus.

In honor of this event, we chose to display Antonio Dumas sucking on a big lollypop, well, because his marvelously eclectic universe of candy, To the Moon Marketplace, has won worldwide acclaim and international attention, for its incredibly diverse assortment of nostalgic candies, gourmet foods, and unique gifts, from wall to wall, and floor to ceiling.

in building a movement that honors and promotes full human rights and dignity for all LGBT people.”

In their leadership roles, they will work with CenterLink to oversee its strategic direction while guiding the organization as it seeks to build capacity, strengthen linkages, and advocate empowerment, self-reliance, inclusion and diversity among every community center in the coalition. Equality Battles Across Florida

A

s we look back on 2011, the past year was one of highs and lows full of progress and setbacks for the LGBT community here in Florida and nationally. As we head into 2012 LGBT equal rights organizations continue efforts to make our communities and our schools safer for young and old alike, while remaining focused on securing full equality for the LGBT community.

Make no mistake, the battle for 2012 is underway – from the presidential campaign trail to stopping hate-filled attempts to strip away our equal rights in Florida and across our nation. More organizers are needed on the ground, more ads to educate the public, and more people on our side.

Increased visibility has resulted from the progress being made on LGBT rights at the local and national level. Sexual and gender minorities gained protections from discrimination in several local Florida municipalities, the Obama administration implemented the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” more out

candidates ran for public office, and transgender people were finally permitted to have their gender marker changed on their passports and Florida DMV licenses.

Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBT community. Through lobbying, grassroots organizing, education, and coalition building, they are changing Florida so that no one suffers harassment or discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Under the watchful eye of Equality Florida, Florida has led the southeastern United States in passing over 60 local policies outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, banning harassment of LGBT students, and providing domestic partnership benefits to our families. They also lead the region in electing LGBT candidates, with 24 openly LGBT officials holding elected office in Florida as of June 1, 2011.

Floridians lives in a community that recognizes domestic partnerships and 60 percent of Florida’s students benefit from specific protections against bullying and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We won’t rest until every child is protected, until our relationships are fully recognized, and our community is no longer suffers the pain of discrimination.”

For the past four years, Equality Florida has been working to pass a statewide law that would include the LGBT community into current non-discrimination laws. The current bill, titled the Florida Competitive Workforce Act, would add sexual orientation and gender identity to Chapter 760 of the Florida state statues.

In fact, over 55 percent of Floridians live in a place that protects them from discrimination based on sexual orientation while one-third are protected from gender identity based discrimination. Communities enact these protections because they know having a diverse talent pool helps their community to thrive. Having these protections is quickly becoming the standard for cities and counties across Florida.

In addition to cities and counties, businesses have been leading the way in offering LGBT inclusive non-discrimination protections. In fact, 89 percent of Fortune 500 companies protect employees against discrimination based on sexual orientation and 41 percent also include gender identity. Equality Florida has launched Equality Means Business to partner with businesses who know that equality in the workplace is good for their business.

According to the Florida Attorney General, hate crimes based on sexual orientation currently account for 22 percent of all hate crimes, surpassing religion as the second highest category. Race is still the most common motivation. When taking into account the size of the targeted communities, LGBT Floridians are at the highest risk of being targeted with a hate crime. Florida law provides increased penalties for hate crimes based on sexual orientation and has been interpreted to include hate crimes targeting the transgender community as well. Adding explicit protections for gender identity and expression to our state hate crimes statute continues to be a priority.

In addition, our T-Community also has the dedicated and devoted work from Jacqui Charvet of the Transgender Equality Rights Initiative (TERI) based here in South Florida.

Throughout 2011 Charvet worked feverishly with myself to get the Florida DMV to recognize their new policy to allow transgender people to change their gender marker on the Florida DMV Drivers Licenses. She also successfully put together the annual memorial “Transgender Day of Remembrance” held in November 2011 at Sunshine Cathedral.

ale title competitions are as old as the gay community itself. And reality shows are television’s fastest growing genre. It was only a matter of time before someone tried to make a reality show out of a gay title contest. This year Mr. Gay World USA, the American arm of the Mr. Gay World competition, will be a reality show. Gay men from sea to shining sea will gather in New York on January 21 to audition for what will eventually lead to the selection of Mr. Gay World USA. Jarl Haugedal, founder of Mr. Gay USA, has teamed up with film producer Michael Billy to turn the competition into “a reality series that will capture the daily contests and the process for selecting the man worthy enough to be called Mr. Gay World USA 2012.”

Haugedal and Billy will serve as judges as well as executive producers of the reality show and Florida’s own Jonathan D. Lovitz, star of LOGO’s “Set Up Squad” and “1 Girl 5 Gays,” will be the official host.

At the auditions, 20 finalists will be chosen to take part in the first round of competitions, at which time 10 will be eliminated. The remaining ten will move into the NYC-JC Guest Suites in Jersey City for a five day (Jan. 28-Feb. 1), televised competition. The final ten will participate in a variety of reality show challenges ranging from runway competitions to cooking contests and political debates, all judged by Haugedal, Billy and other guest judges. All this will culminate with the selection of Mr. Gay World USA 2012.

According to Haugedal and Billy, Mr. Gay World USA is more than a conventional beauty contest: “The show gives us a platform to talk about issues facing the gay community in the United States as well as the ongoing fight for human rights worldwide.”

“As a gay film maker and TV/radio personality for over a decade I was very aware that most people are expecting this show to be over the top and campy, but that is not what our show will be,” Billy says. “Yes, there is a beauty component and yes it will be wildly entertaining, but at a time where school bullying and marriage equality are major issues, we are searching for a role model -- a representative of our country who will make us proud in the World competition.”

Haugedal adds: “We are trying to show the world that the US can be a role model in how to treat gay youth and by making this a mainstream TV show we will be able to reach

many more than we would if this was only a one night event.”

According to the rules contestants must be at least 19 years of age, have a passport, a dynamic personality, be ready to represent your country in the World Competition and be available for the audition on January 21 and filming January 28 to February 1.

In addition to good looks, Haugedal and Billy are “looking for a role model – a representative – someone who can speak to the issues facing the gay community worldwide. Someone we can learn from and be inspired by.”

They and the other judges will be looking for a man “who shows an interest in the world and people around him; displays patience; has a compassionate and considerable nature; embraces change, or things and people different from his own frame of reference, experience, or cultural background; can articulate his thoughts and conduct an intelligent conversation; has a basic innate charm and sparkle; and has poise and is se-

Mr. Gay World USA will represent this country in the Mr. Gay World competition, to be held in South Africa from April 4 to 8. According to Haugedal, he will also “get spreads in several magazines throughout the year. He will be working closely with us on many new

exciting projects we have including other shows. He will be part of Pride celebrations around the country and be invited to speak about gay issues all over the country.”

Though the reality show has not been scheduled yet, Billy says they have “gotten much interest already from the networks in the United States as well overseas.” Meanwhile prospective applicants can still sign up on Facebook and on the Mr. Gay World USA web site at MrGayWorldUSA.com.

The Lesbian Project

hat is the lesbian project?

The lesbian project is an exploration about what could become a woman’s choice, as opposed to a disrespectful tag that is often branded on a woman who has a relationship with another woman.

My intention for writing this is purely for personal reasons—I’m curious.

I have asked myself: Could I have a love relationship with a woman?

Would I take the necessary steps to find that woman?

What impact would that have on my life?

What would we call the older woman who makes this choice?

I am researching this topic because the thought has crossed my mind, especially as the years go by so quickly and I find that I’m living the life of a recluse and spending my time alone, rather than remaining hopeful of meeting a man to spend the rest of my life with. What is out there today is very disap-

pointing. Personally, I have truly evolved and I don’t need a man to look after me, I don’t need a man to make me happy. However, I do want someone to share my happiness with, someone to share and support my dreams, and to let me share and support their dreams.

I want to find someone to grow old with and to be my partner in life.

My question - could it be a man or a woman?

I am tired of the same boring conversation older women have year after year. That conversation goes something like this: I can’t find a decent man. They are either married or gay or they just want sex!

Now I don’t disagree, given some of my recent encounters with men these past few months.

I met a middle-aged businessman of European decent who lives a few hours away. We had lunch and enjoyed great conversation, planning to get together the following weekend. He asked me if he could stay with me because he didn’t want to stay in a hotel by

himself and when I said no, he actually insisted. What right do men have to do this? They think they are entitled to sex. Why? I knew another man for some months as a friend. I had supported him emotionally when he was going through a difficult time.

After not hearing from him for two months, I received a text message. He suggested meeting me that night for a drink and I looked forward to catching up with a friend. As I was getting ready I heard another text come in. To my horror, it was a picture of him, a full-frontal nude shot with a note asking for a similar picture from me. Where do these men get off thinking they have the right to insult women so blatantly?

For me, older men have become hopelessly out of date, and younger men resort to technological excitement. Both seem to be incapable of romance and don’t want to take the time to get to know a person. Things have changed.

Women have evolved into self-assured, competent, successful human beings. Men who follow the archaic behavior of the past are no longer acceptable to the older woman.

How did the lesbian project come about?

Over the last few years, I have had the pleasure of being associated with a number of my daughter’s close friends, many of whom are in same-sex relationships. I have attended family celebrations and special holidays with these women, including my daughter, whose choices I have always supported.

I have been so impressed with the sense of connection these women share. Witnessing their love, support, and friendship with each other has motivated me to search deep down in my soul.

The project’s focus will be to have honest conversations with women over the age of forty about their true feelings. Some will have already made the choice, while others may be contemplating life with a woman, and there will be those who are shocked by the mere suggestion. But they may have the answers I am looking for.

Maybe this can be an alternative for the women who week after week sit expectantly in bars, or who get all dressed up to go out with a girlfriend, hoping they may bump into Mr. Right.

My suggestion is for them to stop looking, to weigh the other alternatives that are open now that they are no longer young girls. Most of these women are successful, attractive, and accomplished, yet they are still looking for something that has become almost obsolete—a male partner!

Here is one definition that clearly defines the focus of this project: Man—a person with the qualities often associated with males such as bravery, spirit, or toughness: She was more of a man than any of them.

That definition is my very point! C’mon, where have the men gone, or were they ever really here? Are they becoming extinct like the dinosaur, or have women evolved at such a rate that a straight man can no longer feel safe with equality?

Women – Live in these questions.

1) Has masculinity run its course? Are you disillusioned?

2) Does the empowered, evolved woman find it harder and harder to accept the wornout expectations of the dormant male species in the 21st century?

An interview with BLAST founder Toni Armstrong Jr. With 800 members, 26 subgroups and 500 events since 2008 BLAST continues to thrive

oni Armstrong Jr. was born in San Antonio, TX in 1954. She changed her name from Toni Lou Armstrong to Toni Armstrong Jr in 1991 to honor her mother. She holds degrees in special education, her chosen profession, from Illinois State College and Northeastern Illinois University Chicago. Toni Jr. lived in Chicago from 1977 until 2006 when she moved to Riviera Beach. She was married in Canada in 2005 to rocket scientist Janis Kidder, her partner since 2001. The couple now makes their home in Palm Beach County. Long active in the cause of equality for LGBT people, Toni Jr. is a successful organizer for both causes and fun as she has demonstrated with her successful launch of BLAST (Bi, Lesbian And Straight Together) in 2008. Although she ‘officially’ retired in 2009, she’s a busy person and South Florida Gay News was lucky to catch her when she had a few minutes to answer some questions.

SFGN – Why did you choose the “Meetup” vehicle and not a Web site?

TAJ – Meetup.com is fantastic. For a little over $150/year, it provides a website that has full calendar capabilities, bulletin boards, ways to contact members, ways for members to RSVP for events, and so on. It archives old events, and we can even post photos and tag members by name on the event pages. A small organization like ours could never afford to hire an individual webmaster to provide all of this.

SFGN – With 800 members it seems BLAST works better than a lot of other organizations. Is this a fair assessment?

TAJ – Well, I’m not sure I’d say it that way.

Each organization has its own goals and ways of measuring success. For example, I greatly admire and support PFLAG, Com-

pass, NOW, the long-standing Boca Rap Group, all the various LGBT college groups, Judy and Ro’s Rainbow Women’s Dances, and the LGBT corporate employee groups (all led by lesbian BLAST members, by the way) at Lockheed-Martin, GE, and Florida Power and Light… to name a few.

Our mission is to provide ways for women to set up events by/for/about women in Palm Beach County. The way BLAST defines success isn’t so much in terms of numbers, though we’ve got that with 838 registered members and more than 500 meetups since we launched in 2008. And definitely not in terms of money – we charge no fees, and most events are free. We aren’t a 501(c)(3), so we aren’t eligible for any grant money. Our members donate to support. Events like concerts – Lucie Blue Tremblay, recently, and The Vagina Monologues in February – are always offered on a ‘more if you can, less if you can’t’ sliding scale. No woman should ever be turned away just for lack of money.

SFGN – What’s the goal of BLAST? The goal of BLAST isn’t to build an organization – it’s to build a community where lesbians, bi women, transwomen, and our straight female allies have opportunities to socialize and network around their interests, to meet friends, to hear about events, to develop leadership skills, and to gain more LGBT and feminist cultural literacy.

SFGN – Do you meet regularly?

Where/when? Meetup implies more of an ad hoc environment.

TAJ – Actually, the Meetup format is very conducive to both individual events and ongoing groups. For example, the Science GALS meet occasionally; sessions have included Frankenfoods (done by a science teacher with lots of knowledge about genetically modified foods) and Space Shuttles (by a woman who worked on the Challenger and Columbia accident investigations). Other things that meet occasionally are WACT (Women of All Colors and

SFGN – You have a significant background in the LGBT rights arena. How did you get started in that and what do you feel is the most significant thing you have done so far?

TAJ – The advancement of LGBT and women’s equality and visibility have been important to me since the 1970s. Involvement in these communities has been the best, healthiest thing that ever could have happened to me – and I feel a responsibility to help others. Looking back, I feel the most significant thing I have brought to the table is my desire and abilities to bring people together for the greater good.

I’ve been a successful networker in lesbianfeminist women’s music through being a concert producer and publisher, including the internationally distributed magazine HOT WIRE:The Journal of Women’s Music and Culture. In the Chicagoland area, I helped high school students and teachers start more than 40 gay-straight alliance clubs in the 1990s and early 2000s, back when schools absolutely did not want this to happen. Also, I was involved with The Color Triangle, a coalition of leaders with the mission statement to end racism in Chicago’s LGBT community.

Anything that increases equality and visibility while helping people bond with each other calls to me.

A Newspaper Must Shine a Light on the Dark Side

ast week, an important one for our newspaper, we published an SFGN special report exposing the unethical conduct of the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, unjustly and unlawfully targeting gays for arrest in public parks.

Our two-year investigation revealed their offensive five-year operation, which entrapped and induced otherwise innocent gay man into engaging in purportedly unlawful acts. Because so many of those arrested on lewd act charges find it easier to cop a plea than stand their ground and fight, many of these cases are now sealed, closed, and expunged. While that is fortunate for the victims who were humiliated by cops, it is unfortunate for the public, because the records exposing the misconduct are not rightfully accessible. Expedience dictated it, but expedience is a traitor to the truth.

We hire cops to uphold and enforce the law, not to break it. Most Americans want to treat their law enforcement officers with reverence and respect. When your life is in danger, when you face a threat, you call for a cop. You count on them to be there during times of distress.

There are many more social services they quietly perform as well. Police perform these tasks at great risk to themselves. But whom do you call when you can’t call the cops?

Recognizing the injustice done to gays in public parks, SFGN has launched CAFA, ‘Citizens Against False Arrest.’ On our website, falsearrests.org, we have begun to post a col-

lection of stories from decent people across this country, who have been unjustly arrested and wrongly prosecuted. Gay or straight, black or white, young or old, this site represents a collage and cross section of official misconduct. If you believe you were such a victim, and have a story to tell, we want to hear from you. On the site, at www.falsearrests.org, there is a place for you to vent.

Last year, cops raided Johnny’s Bar in Fort Lauderdale, going so far as arresting one bartender because he served someone under 21 a glass of water. Over decades of time, we have seen the gay community too often become the target of homophobic law enforcement. Those days have to end. That is why CAFA has to start. If you are the victim of bullying physically or a battering verbally, and law enforcement played a part in it, you now have a voice on the Internet, where you can upload your tale and tell others.

Obviously, the world is changing for the better. Go to a gay pride rally in many cities and you will see police recruiters soliciting for gay officers. Look at our paper and you will see that Broward County’s sheriff, Al Lamberti, is recruiting for officers by advertising in SFGN. Last week, he used discretionary law enforcement funds to make a generous donation to Broward House, a wonderful AIDS agency. We can be proud about what is happening, but we must be on guard and watchful nevertheless.

Candidly, we sought to write more about

CAFA this week, but our staff was backlogged with finalizing and designing our quarterly magazine, which went to press last night. Renamed “The Mirror,” it will be distributed at our second anniversary party this coming week, next Monday, at J Mark’s in Fort Lauderdale, from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. While it is a celebration for us, and a thank you to our advertisers, our readers are invited. All we ask is that you bring at least a ten-dollar donation to help support the good and noble work of Tuesday’s Angels.

For the past few years, the LGBT community has obviously been more visible. But what have we learned in becoming more open? Stories of bullying have come out of the closet. Many teen suicides, we are learning, evolve out of young men scared to embrace their sexuality. Our fight for equal rights against discrimination in the workplace is still being fought in congressional and legislative chambers. Athletes as well as entertainers, surprisingly, are told to stay in

the closet. My answer to that is ‘No!’ A newspaper’s duty is to do more than put on the front page a businessman whose entrepreneurial venture has been a Popsicle licking success. We applaud the Antonio Dumas’s of the world who have done so much to put the LGBT community in a positive light. Of course, we are delighted to showcase our hometown and our friends. Our newspaper will illuminate our lives and applaud our successes, from the businessmen forging a new dream to charitable Smart Rides bringing hope to those in need.

However, our purpose must be to shine a light on the dark side of injustice. That is what a newspaper does, and must continue to do.

And you can’t do it all online or on an iPad. There are many of us who have been wronged.

Many are gone, but their memory is not forgotten. Our work is still not done, and this newspaper’s commitment to you is to confront the dishonesty, expose the lies, and print the truth. We will all be stronger for it.

When We Assume We’re Wanted

s American LGBT organizations think about expanding their services beyond U.S. borders, it’s really important to spend time asking if our services are wanted. Sometimes, even when we think we’re doing a good thing, other people don’t want or appreciate our help.

For many years, as a favor to a dear friend who didn’t cook but who entertained often, I’d walk in the door and, with the very best intentions, head straight to the kitchen.

She and I would go through the ritual of me asking “What can I do?” but it was understood, I thought, that I should just plunge in and take over. I was good at something she wasn’t good at. More recently, I learned that my taking over her kitchen each time wasn’t appreciated. I was stunned and hurt, until I accepted the fact that what might have been helpful at one time isn’t necessarily wanted forever. I take responsibility for not checking in to ask, “Is this really something you like me doing and want me to continue to do?”

When Ray and I were in Austria for Christ-

mas, we met a gay man who is suing an American-based company for sexual orientation discrimination. For the last two years of his long employment by the company, he was asked by his U.S. bosses to market the firm to the LGBT community in Europe and Africa.

Similar marketing had worked very well for the company in the U.S., so the gay employee says he was told to duplicate the campaign.

He felt he was successful, but a year ago on Christmas Eve he was fired. He surmises that there was far less support of LGBT issues by the company’s European leaders, and that he had inadvertently stepped on toes in cultures that didn’t appreciate the targeted marketing he was doing. As with my experience in my friend’s kitchen, his company’s good intentions apparently had unexpected and unwanted impact in some places.

It happens to all of us much of our lives.

When we don’t ask, we’re stunned and hurt to discover that something we thought another person found helpful, pleasurable, fun, endearing, generous, and thoughtful,

was experienced instead as irritating and unwanted. Life keeps reminding us that we need to ask. “Do you want me to do this for you?” “Is it helpful?” “Does it feel good?” The persons for whom the allegedly good deeds are being done also have a responsibility to speak up before their rebuff is so surprising and painful. Being fired without knowing why, when you thought you were doing what was wanted of you, can be a difficult life experience to get your head around. When marriages or friendships end, the cruel words that are spoken about behaviors of the other that were intolerable can be heartbreaking. “I had no idea,” we mutter to ourselves for days, months, and years afterwards.

Out & Equal, our nation’s most successful organization addressing equity for LGBT people in the workplace, is beginning to look beyond America’s borders to do its good work. When I heard that it was hosting a conference in London in July of this year, I was delighted. I’ve done a lot of work with the banking executives in London over the past twenty years, and I know that there is great interest in, and support of, our issues there.

And, there are workplace efforts in play there by local and national LGBT organizations. Knowing and trusting Out & Equal’s executive leadership and staff, I believe that any conference they put together will be thoughtfully done. But sometimes, that’s not the case. We always need to be sure to ask the

right local people the right questions. “What can we do to support you?” “We think we can be helpful because we have had success in the U.S., but we want you to tell us if what we are planning is what you want and need.”

When I work with a group of people in planning a presentation, whether it’s at the National Security Agency (NSA) in Maryland, or Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) in Mumbai, I ask my hosts, “What will be a home run for you?” That allows them to decide for themselves their measures of success. Their answers aren’t always the same.

Sometimes they’ll say, “Please help us better understand transgender issues.” Other times a host might say, “We don’t want you to spend much time on transgender issues.” As important as I think it is to spend time on transgender issues, it’s not my job to tell my host what it needs.

Perhaps if I had remembered that with my friend, and if the gay executive in Austria who was fired had done the same, we both might not be muttering to ourselves, “I had no idea.”

f you’ve lived in Fort Lauderdale—or any other city that serves as a base for airline crews—then you probably know a guy like Bernard already. He thinks he’s so clever, flight schedules in hand, as he juggles not one or even two, but three devoted love interests, all flight attendants (often referred to as “air mattresses” today in Wilton Manors).

That’s essentially the premise of Marc Camoletti’s farce, Boeing Boeing, which opened last weekend at The Promethean Theatre on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

Set in 1960s Paris, the story centers around the antics of lovable lothario Bernard (Matthew William Chizever), an architect, who juggles three fiancés: Texan Gloria (Lauren Butler), who flies for TWA; fiery Italian Gabriella (Monica Lynn Herrera) with Alitalia; and lusty German Gretchen sitcom on steroids and we all know that (Rachel Lomax), a Lufthansa air hostess. steroids sometimes have some unintended When Bernard’s mild-mannered friend side effects.

Audiences will instantly recognize “Say a Little Prayer,” “Let’s Get the Party Started,” “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” and even “Greased Lightning.”

The result is a show packed with plenty of comic mayhem and even a touch of “naughty,” as the characters, including one who is a lesbian, go through this new ritual to move forward with their lives.

GLOW Film Series Premieres in Fort Lauderdale New film series kicks off with Taking a Chance on God

he Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF) premiered GLOW, a monthly LGBT film series sponsored by HBO Latin America at Miami Beach Cinematheque last September. Now the series comes to Fort Lauderdale as well. “[We thought] it was important for the film festival to stay active throughout the year,” said Franc Castro, Executive Director of MGLFF. Mr. Castro also directs the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (FLGLFF), so it seemed like a natural progression to start a GLOW series in Fort Lauderdale.

The 954 GLOW series kicks off at the Gateway Theatre on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. with Taking a Chance on God, a documentary about the life of 86-year-old ordained priest, author, psychotherapist and LGBT rights activist John McNeill.

The film’s website (Takingachanceongod. com) offers a summary of McNeill’s work.

As a Jesuit priest, he published The Church and the Homosexual in 1976, and developed the treatise that there is no denouncement of homosexuality in the Bible. The Vatican ordered his silence; however, he continued to speak on gay rights issues, particularly as an AIDS activist. Sadly, he was expelled from his order in 1987.Yet his ongoing work provides the LGBT community with a path towards spirituality that accepts all sexual orientations.

Now a resident of South Florida, McNeill will attend the screening for a Q&A session along with Director Brendan Fay (Saint of 9/11, Remembering Robert) and Producer Ilene Cutler.

The 954 GLOW series will present diverse films over the upcoming months. Next up: a spring break comedy, Another Gay Sequel (2008), on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m.

Q: I’m trying to eat only healthy foods, so I’ve cut out pizza and most fast foods. What else should I avoid? What should I be eating to build muscle?

A: That’s a great start.You also want to stay away from fried foods, white flour products, sugar, anything made with high fructose corn syrup (including many soft drinks), regular pasta, white rice, alcohol, pastries, cakes and other storebought baked goods and, not least of all, processed foods.

Switch to whole wheat pasta and bread and increase your consumption of fresh vegetables – including asparagus, broccoli, spinach, orange, red and green bell peppers and zucchini, to name a few. Eat more fruit such as bananas, blueberries, strawberries, apples and oranges. Build your main meals around lean, protein-rich meats especially chicken and turkey, and fish especially tuna and salmon.

Skipping meals and starving yourself isn’t the solution. Making a lifestyle change by exercising (cardio and strength training) and eating healthier foods will deliver life-long results.

Here’s a sample one-day muscle-building meal plan created by Douglas Kalman, RD of the American College of Sports Medicine. It has 3,271 calories comprising 44% carbs, 24% protein; and 33% fat.

BREAKFAST: Omelet made with 1 whole egg and 3 egg whites, ½ cup diced mushrooms and peppers and 1 oz. reduced-fat cheese; 2 slices whole grain toast; 6 oz orange juice; water.

MID-MORNING SNACK: 1 cup reduced-fat yogurt.

LUNCH: Grilled skinless chicken breast; ½ cup brown rice; 1 cup steamed mixed Italian-blend vegetables; small side salad with 1 tbsp. olive oil-and-vinegar salad dressing; water.

DINNER: 8 oz. grilled sirloin steak; 1 baked sweet potato; a cup steamed mixed vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower; small mixed-green salad with 1 tbsp. olive oil-andvinegar salad dressing; water.

NIGHTTIME SNACK: 1 apple; 1 tbsp. natural peanut butter.

Q: I find I eat well during the day but in the evenings, after dinner, I can’t stop snacking.

Can you suggest some healthy snacks?

A: The secret lies in planning for your snacks and keeping a store of healthy foods on hand. One of my favorite snacks is sugar-free gelatin with fruit such as sliced bananas, strawberries or blueberries added before the gelatin is refrigerated.

This is important for fitness buffs because vitamin E is a potent cancer-fighting antioxidant that prevents free radical damage after heavy workouts, helping your muscles to recover faster. Almonds contain unsaturated fat, the “good” fat, and there is no cholesterol. One or two handfuls a day are recommended.
