Pride Center panel takes on substance abuse

A

panel of substance abuse experts presented accounts of the party lifestyle Thursday night at the Pride Center at Equality Park.

The workshop was titled “Vodka, Meth, Sex…Lipitor?!: Over 40 (or 60) & still partying?” It was moderated by Bruce Williams, director of senior services at Pride Center.

“Much of what we learn happens in discussions before this microphone even comes on,” Williams said before introducing the panel.

Kristofer Fegenbush, Chief Operating Officer at Pride Center, opened the public comments with these words: “we know that substance abuse impacts our community disproportionately.”

Described as the “elephant in the room” statistics from a federal agency were disclosed showing LGBT identified Americans report a larger proportion of substance abuse than the general population. Statistics were provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

“A lot of relationships go down the tubes when somebody is elevating in their abuse of substances,” said Thomas Nichols, a behavior health therapist at Broward

House. “There’s lack of quality time.

There’s arguments about things that seem trivial and there’s also a change in intimate relations. People stop being connected both emotionally and physically because now one of the partners has another partner that means more to them.”

Janet Downie represented the Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC) on the panel. She said she represents the mature adult program – those ages 55 and older.

“It’s not that easy to bring an older person into recovery, but once they’re in, they catch on,” Downie said. “We find that a younger individual doesn’t necessarily have [a sense of] too many consequences. If they’re in their 20s, their brain hasn’t fully developed.”

For the mature, recovery is the only option left. Long term substance abuse causes homelessness, Downie said.

“Sometimes the individual simply does not have a choice because physically we are breaking down,” Downie said. “We can’t drink the amount that we use to.”

The most powerful moment in an addict’s life, Downie said, is when they realize they MEMBER need help and ask for it.

“That’s what keeps us coming back,” she said. “We see the lives change. It’s the beauty of healing and we all deserve that.”

David Fawcett, a clinical hypnotherapist, spoke of the dangers of methamphetamine use among men who have sex with men.

Fawcett is the author of the book, “Lust, Men and Meth: A Gay Man’s Guide To Sex and Recovery.”

Fawcett explained how meth users experience a surge in dopamine levels in the brain. During recovery, Fawcett said, the biggest challenge is learning to have healthy sex -- substance free.

“If someone gets clean, their sex life goes with it,” Fawcett said. “If someone gets a sex thought, they get a drug thought. That makes it extremely difficult in recovery.”

Fawcett said the government’s ban on Sudafed, a nasal decongestant allowed Mexican drug cartels to flood the market with cheap, low-grade meth. Gay men, sex workers, HIV positive people and immigrants are extremely vulnerable to the harms of this street drug, Fawcett said.

Craig Benoit, a nationally certified interventionist, was the final panelist to speak to the crowd of just over 15 people at the 90 minute workshop. Benoit said he has been “clean for 24 years from this disease.”

“People call me,” Benoit said. “I do assessments, I do insurance verifications and then I get them into detox.”

aclu launches nationwide Training on protest, Resistance (AP) The American Civil Liberties Union staged a nationwide training event Saturday to make sure people are aware of their rights as protesters and urge organized, public resistance by those opposed to policies of President Donald Trump.

Organizers said the event at a sports arena on the University of Miami campus was livestreamed to locations in all 50 states. ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said 200,000 people had signed up to attend one of an estimated 2,000 local events.

The event, staged in town hall style, was aimed at capitalizing on numerous demonstrations since Trump's election in November and to make sure people know their rights to protest, Romero said.

He said priority issues are immigration, the First Amendment free speech and religious freedom rights, civil and reproductive rights and rights of gay, lesbian

ourt: discrimination against gay Workers not prohibited

(AP) A federal appeals court says employers aren't prohibited from discriminating against employees because of sexual orientation.

A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday ruled 2-1 that a 1964 civil rights law doesn't protect against workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Jameka Evans sued her former employer, Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah, alleging she was discriminated against and effectively forced from her job as a security guard because she is a lesbian and didn't conform to gender norms.

The majority opinion says the court was bound by precedent set in 1979. However, the dissenting judge says a 1989 U.S. Supreme Court ruling prohibiting discrimination because someone doesn't conform to gender stereotypes would apply in the Evans case.

Evans' attorneys say they'll ask the full 11-judge appeals court to rehear the case.

The ACLU also launched a new grassroots online organizing platform called PeoplePower.org. It's billed as a way for people considering a local protest or rally to connect and coordinate with others around the country with similar intentions, and to provide details of ACLU initiatives.

Another plan is creation of "freedom cities" around the country that would encourage local officials to pass laws resisting Trump policies such as stepped-up deportations of people living in the country illegally, said Faiz Shakir, ACLU national political director.

(AP) Women seeking abortions and some basic health services, including prenatal care, contraception and cancer screenings, would face restrictions and struggle to pay for some of that medical care under the House Republicans' proposed bill.

The legislation, which would replace much of former President Barack Obama's health law, was approved by two House committees on Thursday. Republicans are hoping to move quickly to pass it, despite unified opposition from Democrats, criticism from some conservatives who don't think it goes far enough and several health groups who fear millions of Americans would lose coverage and benefits.

The bill would prohibit for a year any funding to Planned Parenthood, a major provider of women's health services, restrict abortion access in covered plans on the health exchange and scale back Medicaid services used by many low-income women, among other changes.

Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Health, Labor, Education and Pensions Committee, said the legislation is a "slap in the face" to women. She said it would shift more decisions to insurance companies.

"You buy it thinking you will be covered, but there is no guarantee," Murray said.

House Republican leaders said the bill, which is backed

by President Donald Trump, will prevent higher premiums some have seen under the current law and give patients more control over their care.

"Lower costs, more choices not less, patients in control, universal access to care," House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Thursday.

The abortion restrictions and cuts to women's health care could draw opposition from some Republican women.

(AP) Organizers of Boston's St. Patrick's Day parade reversed course on Friday and said they would allow a group of gay veterans to march in this year's parade.

The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council announced on the parade's Twitter account that it had signed an "acceptance letter" that would clear the way for OutVets to participate.

OutVets did not immediately say whether it would accept the invitation to march.

"We are in receipt of a letter from the allied war council, and we are actively reviewing it," said Dee Dee Edmondson, a lawyer for the group.

An earlier vote by the council to bar OutVets from marching drew immediate condemnation from high-profile politicians, some of whom said they would not march if the gay veterans were excluded. It caused some sponsors to back out and stirred up a furor on social media.

It was unclear if the reversal of the decision was a result of a second vote by the council.

"I decided this is a wrong that has to be corrected," the parade's lead organizer, Tim Duross, told WHDH-TV. Earlier Friday, OutVets executive director Bryan Bishop said the vets had been told the original decision to bar them was because of their rainbow symbols.

Bishop said the council offered to allow the group to march if its members did not display the rainbow ag, a symbol of gay pride, which is on their banner and their jackets.

The group said no.

"I almost fell out of the chair at that point, said, 'You gotta be kidding me,'" Bishop said.

He said OutVets has displayed the rainbow at the parade the last two years.

Riviera Beach To Ban Conversion Therapy for Minors Tucker Berardi

R

iviera Beach City is joining the growing list of Florida cities who have banned the practice of conversion therapy on minors.

With help from the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, the action to ban conversion therapy was taken up by the Riviera Beach City Council who unanimously voted on their first reading to prohibit licensed mental health professionals from administering conversion therapy to minors.

“Conversion therapy is usually forced on minors by parents who find it impossible to accept the fact that their children identify as gay or lesbian,” PBCHRC Board Member Hutch Floyd said, according to a press release. “This so-called ‘treatment’ is extremely harmful.”

PBCHRC has partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Southern Poverty Law Center to encourage cities in South Florida to incorporate a ban on conversion therapy for minors, and they have been met with success so far.

Florida cities that have banned the practice include West Palm Beach, Miami and Miami Beach, Wilton Manors, Bay Harbor Islands, Lake Worth, Boynton Beach and now Riviera Beach.

The ordinance for the ban in Riviera Beach was brought forth by City Councilwoman Dawn Pardo and Tonya Davis-Johnson.

“As an elected official, it is a key part of my job to take steps to protect children in Riviera Beach from abuse,” Davis Johnson said. “PBCHRC presented numerous

scientific studies to the City Council and the experts all agree that conversion therapy … causes extreme emotional trauma to LGBT youth.”

Dr. Rachel Needle is a licensed psychologist in Palm Beach County who has been brought in to present arguments against the practice of conversion therapy to other South Florida City Commissions.

“Any ethical mental health practitioner should not attempt to cure or repair gender identity or sexual orientation through these scientifically invalid techniques,” Needle said. “Attempting to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity can have a devastating impact on a minor.”

The ban only applies to state-licensed therapists, and does not affect unlicensed therapists, such as those who practice under faith-based groups who retain their religious freedom to continue the practice. Adults are also still able to pursue conversion therapy.

While progress is being made in individual cities, last year State Senator Jeff Clemens (D) proposed a bill that would ban conversion therapy statewide.

The Senate refused to take action on the bill, however, and Clemens plans to reintroduce it this year.

“Hopefully, legislative leaders in Tallahassee will schedule a hearing on Senator Clemens’ bill this year,” DavisJohnson said. “However, until a statewide ban on conversion therapy is enacted, we are … going to do all we can to protect LGBT youth here in Riviera Beach.”

“I am lucky to say now that it is not frightening for me living in LA to be gay. Even when I was in Texas, I wasn’t afraid. I was kind of out in high school,” she continues. “I just could never decide on what label. I am glad that I am public about it and I think I should be.”

(AP) Connecticut's first transgender candidate for governor says her bid for the office isn't about her gender.

Democrat Jacey Wyatt, a businesswoman from Branford, says she doesn't like what she sees happening in the state and believes a political outsider can bring a new perspective and fresh ideas. Wyatt recently filed paperwork to run in the 2018 election.

She appeared Sunday on WFSB-TV's "Face the State" political affairs program.

The 46-year-old says she believes voters will be drawn to her candidacy, saying it "just isn't about me being a woman."

Wyatt is the latest Democrat to express interest in the race.

Middletown Mayor Dan Drew announced in January that he's exploring a possible run.

Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has not yet said whether he plans to seek a third term.

he 2017 Florida AIDS Walk & Music Festival returns to Fort Lauderdale Beach Sunday March 19.

This year’s event is presented by AHF Pharmacy and Wells Fargo and features a performance by the funk-pop-dance band DNCE. Registration opens at 8 a.m. at South Beach Park, located just north of the B Ocean Resort. The walk begins at 10 a.m. and the live concert starts at 11 a.m.

Women March on White House for Abortion Rights Brittany Ferrendi

omen and men all around the country celebrated International Women’s Day. For many of them, that celebration included protesting at the White House.

Forty organizations, including the National LGBTQ Task Force, stood outside the White House on March 8 to protest President Donald Trump’s “global gag rule,” which the task force describes as a “massive expansion of a failed policy that prohibits non-U.S. organizations that receive U.S. funding from providing, referring or even mentioning abortion services.”

LGBTQ Task Force Policy Counsel Candace Bond-Theriault spoke during the protest: “On International Women's Day we must rally together to resist the Trump administration and its deadly policies like the Global Gag rule — a de facto ban of comprehensive reproductive health care internationally.

Other organizations who took part in and organized the protest include Amnesty International USA, Catholics for Choice, Global Justice Center, International Planned Parenthood Federation, Muslim American Women’s Policy Forum and more.

Tuesday's Angels Still Going Strong This month's dinner featured Broward House

huck Nicholls grabbed the microphone and brought the meeting to order.

“Ok, everyone, quiet down,” Nicholls said to a room full of gay men Tuesday evening in Fort Lauderdale. “We’ve got a guest speaker I want you to hear from.

He’s from an important organization in our community.”

The speaker was Rob Bullock, representing Broward House and the occasion was the monthly dinner meeting of Tuesday’s Angels. Since 1993, Tuesday’s Angels has served a vital role in providing care to South Floridians living with HIV/AIDS. Nicholls, fulfilling his duties as vice president of the board of directors for Tuesday’s Angels, introduced Bullock to the men seated inside Mojo Restaurant. It was another full house for the monthly dinner group.

“You really are making a difference,” Bullock told the group.

Bullock is Development Director for Broward House, the longest serving HIV/ AIDS agency in Broward County. Last year Broward House worked with more than 3,200 clients. The agency started 29 years ago as a housing program and assisted living facility.

“So many people back then didn’t have a place to go after they found out they were HIV positive,” Bullock said.

Today Broward House owns 10 apartment buildings in Broward County – 72 units total and every one occupied.

“Sadly, 30 plus years into the epidemic housing is still a major issue with our clients and what we do and it is the single biggest part of our programming,” Bullock said.

The group also heard brief remarks from Paul J. Rolli, President of the Central Area Neighborhood Association of Wilton Manors. Rolli plugged an upcoming Smithsonian exhibit at Art Gallery 21.

Before raffle prizes were awarded H. Scott Johnson, a retired Opera singer from the Bronx, N.Y. performed two songs. Johnson, who winters in Oakland Park, drew applause with his own rendition of “Send In The Clowns.”

Tuesday’s Angels members, supporters and future members pay $25 to attend the monthly dinners. Assigned table seating also allows for networking opportunities and, possibly, new friendships, said President Mike Ross.

“Most people come for the camaraderie and the socializing,” Ross said.

Bullock’s speech was a reminder of those in need of help. With the change in Washington, D.C. there is great uncertainty to how HIV/AIDS agencies will be funded.

“We’ll all be holding our breath,” Bullock told SFGN. “Congress has not authorized the Ryan White Act.” Along with housing needs, Broward House provides testing services for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. What makes Broward House “unique,” Bullock said, is the agency has an inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment program.

“We have a huge epidemic of opioid abuse and heroin abuse in South Florida,” Bullock said. “We still have people sharing needles and our state government doesn’t allow for needle exchange. So we have people sharing needles and sadly we still see HIV. It would be so easy to stop and it’s still a big issue.”

Bullock said there are plenty of success stories as well, noting it is not uncommon for an HIV positive person to go through the Broward House program, get off drugs and become self-sufficient again.

Tuesday’s Angels, Bullock said, has provided bus passes for Broward House clients who do not have cars. The bus passes get Broward House clients to “life-saving” doctor’s appointments, Bullock said.

Celebrity Lip Sync Battle Thursday Local stars to raise money for LGBT causes

“I

’m a pop princess at heart,” declared Tony Lima.

Lima, executive director of SAVE, an organization that advocates for LGBT rights, is one of at least 20 local celebrities who will be participating in the Poverello Celebrity Lip Sync Battle on Thursday, March 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Hunter’s Nightclub in Wilton Manors.

The event will raise money for Poverello’s Florida AIDS Walk Hunger Fighters, Broward House, SunServe, Latinos Salud, and SAVE. “I’m excited to do it and it's all for a really great cause. As [SAVE is a] beneficiary, it’s very nice for us to participate in a fun event like this,” said Lima, who added that he plans to have as much fun as possible.

“I can probably ham it up with the best of them on a stage, especially with a song I really like. I’m excited to share a different side of myself with the community. I’m very much a pop aficionado.” Lima doesn’t know exactly what he’s going to sing but he predicts Britney Spears and Ariana Grande will probably make it into the mix.

“I’m not a singer. That’s why I lip sync,” joked Darren Thompson of Dick’s Service Station. Thompson is another participant

and took part in last year’s inaugural event.

But “it’s all for a good cause” so Thompson will participate and maybe throw in a little “Grease,” maybe some Scissor Sisters. “Kind of do a little mash-up. I make it up as I go along.”

Poverello’s Celebrity Lip Sync Battle is a lot like the reality TV show it’s based on, said Kevin Clevenger, Poverello’s events and fundraising coordinator. During Poverello’s event, two contestants will battle each other and take turns lip syncing.

“It’s just like the TV show, but we’re asking for money. People tip their performers.

We ask the performers to work the crowd [as they lip sync] with big buckets because every dollar is matched,” Clevenger said.

Every dollar thrown in a bucket goes to the specific organization that lip singer has chosen. “It’s like a drag show. It is the most fun event that I’ve ever done and I’ve done a lot of events. The energy is amazing,” Clevenger said.

There will also be a silent auction. Items include spa treatments, hair cuts, trips to Antigua and St. Lucia, trips to Disney World, dining and retail packages, hotel stays, and more.

Tickets are $15 and only available at the door. Must be 21 or older to attend.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the event begins at 8 p.m.

Governor Scott Failed to Mention LGBT, Latinx Communities When Talking About Pulse Tucker Berardi

lorida Governor Rick Scott expressed his heartbreak for the victims and families of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in his State of the State Address on Tuesday. He did not, however, go into specifics on who exactly those victims were, leaving references to LGBT and Latinx communities out of his speech.

“Since I last stood here to address you, Florida has endured many heartbreaks,” Scott said in his address. “I have prayed for families around our state who have been impacted by tragedy, and my own heart has been broken for their loss. Our state has been rocked by the gruesome terrorist attack at the Pulse Nightclub, in Orlando.”

The governor then used the Pulse tragedy alongside the Zika Virus and two major hurricanes to segue into the rest of his speech.

“While heartbreaking, these tragedies have given me a new perspective,” Scott continued.

“I am now more convinced than ever that the future of our state is even greater than our past accomplishments and that we must be even more resolved to build a society where any child, no matter where they are from, has the opportunity to live their dreams.”

Hannah Willard, the Public Policy Director of Equality Florida, issued a statement in response to the Governor’s annual State of the State Address: “This morning Governor Rick Scott made the Pulse tragedy a centerpiece in his annual State of the State Address,” Willard said.

“While we are glad the governor spotlighted the Pulse tragedy, we are deeply disappointed that when talking about the worst anti-LGBTQ attack in our nation’s history, our governor

failed to acknowledge the LGBTQ community in any way.”

Willard continued by calling on Florida elected leaders to honor the victims and families of the Pulse massacre by taking action against the “hatred and bigotry that fueled this attack.”

Willard encouraged the governor in her statement to adopt The Florida Competitive Workforce Act, which adds sexual orientation and gender identity to the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992. This would enforce LGBT protections from discrimination in employment, housing and public spaces.

“Unfortunately, under Florida law it remains legal to fire LGBTQ people, evict us from our homes, and deny us service at a public business just because of who we are,” Willard said. “ When our own state government fails to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination, it sends a message that anti-LGBTQ discrimination is acceptable and it plants the seeds for future hate violence against us.”

Willard also argued that the Florida Competitive Workforce Act would bring millions of dollars in revenue if enacted, as Florida’s marketplace would become a more competitive to potential LGBT employees. This was in response to Governor Scott’s focus on incentivizing businesses to relocate to Florida and attracting the best and brightest workforce.

“We urge the Florida Legislature to move equally forward in our state by passing the Florida Competitive Workforce Act, encouraging economic growth, and ensuring that all Floridians have the opportunity to live, work, and play in our state,” Willard said.

On activism, Kramer said it wasn’t some grand sweeping vision or an abstract fight for equal rights that got him engaged. The match which lit his fuse was much closer to home. “It was the death of so many friends [because of AIDS] that kicked me in the ass.”

Larry Elwyn, a gay man who lived in San Francisco at the height of the AIDS epidemic, said he’s known of Kramer since back when “everyone knew him as an asshole.” But it was an asshole and a fighter, said Elwyn, that the gay community needed to gain the attention it needed and deserved to fight AIDS. “I had friends who were dropping like flies. They were dropping faster than you could say their names.”

During the rest of his trip to South Florida, Kramer will attend “An Evening with Larry Kramer,” also presented by the museum, on Friday, March 10 at 8 p.m. at Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale. Kramer will discuss HIV/AIDS and the history of the LGBTQ community over the last 35 years with Kevin Sessums, past contributing editor to Vanity Fair and author of “Mississippi Sissy.” Tickets are $25.

Kramer says it’s hard not to be very depressed when it comes to Trump administration and LGBT rights. “I am very frightened what’s going to happen to us a gay people,” he said. “I’m terrified. I hope we as a population can be angry and fight back. They are already starting to chip away at gay marriage. It’s going to be Roe v. Wade.”

As for his novel, “The American People, Volume 1: Search for My Heart,” it is a 600-plus opus of social, political and historical segments thrown together to shape the United States. It frames the Founding Fathers in a new light and introduces the AIDS virus decades earlier than originally thought. “I guess somewhere along the line of so many people dying and being surrounded by it all the time – I wanted to find out the history of HIV,” Kramer explained.

“We (gays) have been here since Jamestown. Nothing about homosexuality is in our history books. Gore Vidal told me about Lincoln, Hamilton and George Washington.

As for history a little closer to home, Kramer’s recent trip afforded him his first visit to the World AIDS Museum. “I was knocked out when I saw it,” he said. “It’s got to be put on the top of the list for gay people all over the world to come visit.”

The evening was presented by the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center. It also featured a performance by the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida.

someone whose life is still measured in the single digits, should be so aware that our differences do not define us, and chose his ears rather than his gender, as his analogy, was one of the most beautiful comments on humanity that I have ever heard.

Our differences should be celebrated, embraced, and accepted, and should never become lines in the sand to separate us. This needed awareness should be pushed on us and into our collective psyche.

And it must start with us.

It wasn’t until I became very close with a trans friend, that I realized how far we have to go. One would think that in Wilton Manors, of all places, a trans person would be able to be comfortable and free from harassment and judgment. But we really have no idea. He is constantly addressed by the wrong pronoun and when he or I gently correct this person, he or she persists.

So, when you read your Twitter feed, or see a Facebook post about the horrific murder of a trans woman in Brazil, filmed for the licentious amusement of others, remember the feeling of horror, and when the Wilton Manors City Commission thinks that it is enough to have the rainbow flag fly in the city because it includes everyone, think twice. Because while we are all humans, we have a long way to go towards acceptance of all.

ON THE PASSING OF MY PARTNER

Michael RoBeRT gReenspan (1949-2017)

I

met Michael Robert Greenspan on the last Sabbath of February, 1985; and I lost him on the last Sabbath of February, 2017.

During those 32 years Michael enriched my life more than any person ever could, other than my parents.

Michael was my partner, my lover, my best friend and my soul mate. He was, as he once said, my beshert, my destiny. Michael was never my husband, not because we did not want to marry but because marriage equality came too late for him. That was but one of the tragedies of his five final years. There was a lot that Michael had the potential for, and which he could have accomplished, had he not been struck by the demon of dementia.

Michael was an amazing, multi-faceted human being, and not just because he was the love of my life. When I met Michael, he was 35 and already accomplished much.

Born in Asheville, North Carolina, his father was a Jewish pharmacist from New York City and his mother a Jewish Southern belle from Bishopville, South Carolina. Michael and his two brothers grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and he spoke with a Southern accent until he got rid of it in his twenties.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1972, and to the end of his life was a proud Tar Heel.

During the early seventies Michael managed a cigar store in Atlanta and became a wine connoisseur. But his greatest passion was for the accordion. Like many children, Michael learned to play the squeeze box when he was a boy. However, unlike many children, Michael continued to play the accordion while others went on to other pursuits. Michael’s and his accordion played all kinds of music, including Jewish, Gypsy and all forms of eastern European and Middle Eastern music.

Unlike other accordionists, Michael was also a great singer, a fine composer, and an accomplished arranger. During the 1970s’ Michael was one half of the Erev Duo, which he formed with David Goodfriend and then one fourth of the American Balalaika Company, though Michael did not play the balalaika.

Michael and the other members of the ABC – Paul Merz, Arthur Ganz and Sandra Peterson Ganz – traveled the world, from state fairs to cruise ships, playing and singing the music that they loved. As Michael’s partner I went with him to many accordion-playing excursions, most famously to Orlando to the Florida

Accordionist Association’s annual SMASH conventions, weekend gatherings devoted to all things accordion. You might say that I was “married to the accordion.”

Michael was at the height of his musical career in the early eighties when he moved to Miami and came to terms with his sexual orientation. In February 1985 he read an ad in David magazine for a “gay” synagogue, Congregation Etz Chaim. At the time CEC resided in a storefront in Ojus, now part of Aventura, and we did not have a rabbi. I was one of the Temple’s lay leaders; and it happened that I was leading service the night Michael first walked in the door.

Michael later said that he fell in love twice that night: with Congregation Etz Chaim and with me (or vice versa). I was at the end of my previous relationship at that time and had no interest in starting a new one but Michael was persistent. As I wrote in “When Love Lasts Forever,” a 1999 anthology about male couples edited by Merle James Yost, “Michael went from being one of many to being the main one to being the only one. In August I moved out of the North Broward house that I shared with my ex and joined Michael in an apartment in Fort Lauderdale. Michael and I lived in that apartment until 1992, when we moved into a condominium home in Plantation” where I still live.

Though Michael was more experienced than I in so many things, as a relative newbie to gay life Michael was unfamiliar with South Florida’s LGBT community. Being an active member myself, I introduced Michael to my friends and to groups that I belonged to; groups that he soon joined: Pride South Florida, the Stonewall Library, South Florida Bears, Saber MC. He also became an active member of Congregation Etz Chaim, and for the next 26 years emerged as of the most important people in this Synagogue’s 42-year history.

Michael was elected to the Board within a year of becoming a member; and was President of the Congregation from 1986 to 1988 and from 1996 to 1998. But here again his most important contributions were musical. Michael was CEC’s unofficial cantor almost from the moment he arrived; and its official cantorial soloist from 1999 to 2011. Because of his valuable contributions Michael received several awards and was an honoree at Etz Chaim’s 35th Anniversary Gala in 2007. Michael was also honored by the Gay and Lesbian Community

Center of South Florida, now the Pride Center at Equality Park, as one of its “Stars of the Rainbow” in 2008.

Though Michael never had children, he always desired to be a teacher. When he neared forty, Michael decided to put his musical career on the back burner and become an educator, studying for and receiving a Master of Education degree from Florida Atlantic University in 1990. Not surprisingly, Michael became as accomplished a teacher as he was as a musician. As a fourth grade teacher in Welleby Middle School in Sunrise and as a technology specialist at Millennium Middle School in Tamarac Michael taught and shaped a generation of young people. Because of his exemplary accomplishments as an educator, Michael was a finalist for Broward County Teacher of the Year in 1997. Michael loved to teach; he loved his students; and he might have continued teaching to this day if his illness had not forced him to retire.

My relationship with Michael Greenspan had its ups and downs but, on the whole, the good vastly outweighed the bad. As I wrote in “When Love Lasts Forever,” Michael and I “shared a lot in common: music, the theater,

chocolate, nature walks, stuffed animals, the Blue Ridge Parkway, liberal politics, leather and bear clubs and, of course, Congregation Etz Chaim. Sometimes I wondered how he put up with me, but I am glad” he did. Our relationship was based on mutual love, respect, and care. I learned a lot from Michael, at home and in our travels to Great Britain – we were both avid Anglophiles – France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Mexico, the Caribbean, Costa Rica and Panama, western Canada and Alaska.

Michael often expressed the wish that we would grow old together and retire to his beloved birthplace of Asheville, North Carolina. Sadly, this was not meant to be.

Towards the end, as dementia ravaged his mind and his body, Michael lost the means to communicate effectively. Even so, I like to think that, deep down inside, Michael was still the person that I loved and cared for the past 32 years. Though Michael’s life is through, I still cherish the years that we spent together and he will always be part of my life, no matter what I do or who I meet in my remaining years.

Thank you, Michael, for making my life worth living.

Last week’s article “I’m Not Gay. Your Not Gay. We Were Never Gay,” is an insult to the LGBT community. Men and women have died for the right to live openly and be “gay.”

Despite what you think we are not entering a “post gay” era.

We have entered a Trump era and our rights are on the line. This is not time to go back into the closet. We need to come out more than ever.

I am proud to be gay. But you dismiss our gayness as nothing more than a fleeting sexual preference that can changed on a whim. Not true.

Being a top or bottom may be a sexual preference. But being gay or lesbian is not. If that were the case virgins would have no sexual orientation. But most gay men knew they were gay long before they knew they were a top or bottom.

Gay men still bear the brunt of the HIV epidemic in this nation. That’s just one reason we need labels. If there weren’t any such labels the medical community and our service organizations would not know who to assist.

Just because you visited Island House in Key West and witnessed “a wide variety of sexual appetites,” doesn’t mean being gay no longer should exist. You cite prison sex as a way to bolster your argument.

But a straight guy in prison having sex with a man has nothing to do with sexual orientation. Just because a straight person can engage in sexual activity with someone of the same sex doesn’t make them gay. Just like many gay men had sex with women in their younger days but do not identify as straight or bisexual.

Being gay is an orientation – not a preference.

Your arguments are the same ones conservative and religious people have used against us for decades. They don’t like the concept of sexual orientation. For them there is one orientation and that’s heterosexual. Anything else is a sin and should be outlawed.

You say “call us all horny, but don’t call us gay.” Wrong. I am horny. And please call me gay.

Well, it seems Rush, aka Gregory A. Grove has anger issues. Couldn’t be all that testosterone could it?

Various gay news sites are reporting Mr. Grove was detained by law enforcement last week in – of all places – Fort Lauderdale.

Shocker.

Instinct Magazine posted a bulletin from the Broward Sheriff’s Office showing Rush/ Grove was arrested on March 2. His crime?

Assault, battery and culpable negligence. In other words, a domestic dispute involving a partner.

The BSO bulletin reads the 6-foot, 210-pound former Falcon Studios actor was released on his own recognizance.

“Matt was at the top of his game just not too long ago,” writes Adam Dupuis in Instinct Magazine. “He can be seen around Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale often and I’ve seen

him in a small acting part in one of the local theaters. He did end up taking his clothes off, well the whole cast did eventually, but he ended up missing some of the following performances for unknown reasons.”

Some of Rush’s credits for Falcon include: “Bootstrap,” “The Recruits,” “Good As Gold,” “Up All Night” and “Bounce.” In 2010, Rush received the Grabby Award for “Best Versatile Performer.”

There is a Twitter account — @MeetGreg — some have attributed to Rush with an image bearing his likeness, but thus far no activity in 2017.

' The essenTial Rupaul: heRsToRy, philosophy & heR fieRcesT queens'

T

he Queen has spoken.

Everyone listens because, well, how can they not? Her bearing, her stature, her very demeanor demand attention from all her subjects and in the book “The Essential RuPaul” by John Davis, illustrations by Libby Vanderploeg, these queens have a lot to say.

When RuPaul Andre Charles was a little boy, his mother told him that he would be a star someday, and she’d given him an unusual name, just so he’d stand out.

That’s what he did, starting in his teens when he dropped out of the North Atlanta School of Performing Arts and began to “find his calling.”

On his way, he was a member of a punk rock band, he performed as a go-go dancer, hosted a talk-show, and “hosted numerous local events” in Atlanta. Later, he moved to New York and acted in films. By 1989, after a few pauses in his fabulosity, he became “RuPaul the glamazon” and went on to even bigger fame in fashion, modeling, music, TV, and cosmetics.

Following the 9/11 attacks, RuPaul briefly and “quietly” stepped back from show biz to “take a break,” but he couldn’t stay away long: in 2009, he launched RuPaul’s Drag Race, a television show that featured snarky judges and competitors in performance, sewing, comedy, and (of course) drag.

In this book, we meet some of them…

There’s Santino Rice, a Drag Race judge whose comments cut like a razor blade.

Adore Delano, whose last-minute debut came on YouTube after her creator, Danny Noriega, appeared on American Idol. Alaska, a “Tacky Blonde Bombshell” who hailed from the state she was named

There’s Cameroon native BeBe Zahara Benet, who arrived following a modeling gig from “an unexpected noshow of a female model.” Drag housewife BenDeLaCreme has created her own cosmetics line, featuring cruelty-free products. Following her taping of Drag Race in 2010, Carmen Carrera is now a trans TV star. Cher impersonator Chad Michaels has been fortunate to perform with Cher herself. Manila Luzon’s first appearance was as Cruella de Vil, and performer Nina Flowers enjoys her own “day” in the Denver LGBT community.

“The Essential RuPaul” is one really quirky book.

Despite that its subtitle promises “Herstory” and more, there’s really very little here about RuPaul; four pages, to be exact, and one of those is almost totally just an illustration by artist Libby Vanderploeg.

The rest of this book, alas, only has tentative relevance to RuPaul, through the drag queens that appeared on her show.

And that’s fine – if that narrow subject is what you want. Author John Davis does a good job in bringing together a bedazzle of performers in this book, but the list is frustrating in its incompleteness and the mini-chapters with mini-biographies are woefully short and quite repetitious. That, plus the misleading title may frustrate some readers but yet, fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race probably won’t care.

They’ll enjoy this book no matter what.

If that’s you, then you’ll be happy when you find “The Essential RuPaul.”

And long live the queens.

“When We Rise” is a miniseries about LGBT rights, created by Dustin Lance Black based on a autobiography by long time gay rights activist Cleve Jones. The series stars Guy Pearce, Rachel Griffiths, Mary-Louise Parker, Michael Kennet Williams, Austin P. McKenzie, Emily Skeggs, Jonathan Majors, Fiona Dourif, and Sam Jaeger. It premiered Feb. 27, and ran four nightst that week.

It chronicles the gay rights movement in San Francisco over the course of four decades following the lives of several LGBT individuals.

here are some of the real heroes portrayed in the aBc docudrama: cleve Jones (1954) is an AIDS and LGBT rights activist. He’s the founder of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt which has become, at 54 tons, the world's largest piece of community folk art. In 1983, at the onset of the AIDS pandemic Jones co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation which has grown into one of the largest and most influential AIDS advocacy organizations in the U.S. Jones is HIV positive.

When he first learned he was infected he became seriously ill. Today though his present health is good.

Roma guy is an American LGBT and

women's rights activist. Before moving to San Francisco she worked in Africa for nine years.

She is openly lesbian. Guy and her partner moved to San Francisco in the 1970s. They were two of The Women’s Building’s cofounders, and Guy was a cofounder of La Casa de las Madres, Women Against Rape, and The Women’s Foundation of California. Guy also advocated for women's access to health care in San Francisco. She served for twelve years on the Health Commission City and County of San Francisco. In 2014 the San Francisco Health Commission adopted a resolution recognizing the “Life & Legacy of Roma Guy.”

ken Jones an openly gay black man, joined the gay-rights movement after the Vietnam War, only to discover and confront racism within the gay community. His activism turned intersectional as he fought to diversify the gay rights movement, while also fighting the AIDS epidemic and organizing services for homeless youth. He advocated for a clean needle exchange that he brought to the Black Caucus. In many ways he is the one who initiated a lot of the change that happened in the Castro district of San Francisco. diane Jones is the partner of Roma Guy. Jones' first job out of nursing school was working on one of San Francisco General Hospital's medical-surgery units, which ended up being ground zero in the early AIDS epidemic in San Francisco. Several of those early patients said, 'Oh, there are these two nurses on the night shift, and they’re not afraid of us, and they’re gay. You should get them,'” Jones said an interview. She was one of them. From there, she became an activist on the front lines of HIV/AIDS healthcare, and pushed for expansion of access to federal resources, research, medication, preventative care, and education. Jones recently retired but continues to be an activist. She and Guy live together in San Francisco's Mission District.

I

t’s been nearly 30 years since Taylor Dayne first broke onto the charts with “Tell It to My Heart,” and her dance anthem can still be heard in gay clubs. The singer will be coming to The Amp in Pompano Beach this weekend to sing her ‘80s and ‘90s hits, along with new material, in a concert with Billy Ocean.

SFGN spoke with Dayne about her music career, her family and the changes she’s witnessed in the industry:

How do you balance touring with raising two teenagers?

It’s a juggle. Emotionally they need me more than ever and yet they’re in that independent stage and want to distance themselves, too.

Hello! I always say I’m a mother leaving the nest, yet I hear the birds screaming for me.

This is what I was born to do, but I was also born to be their mother. Biologically, you’re programmed and wired.

SFGN: What have you got planned for South Florida audiences?

Dayne: Oh, my goodness, to me, touring and performing is a story you’re telling, with an arc, a beginning, middle and end. The next two years I’m celebrating 30 years of the release of my first album.

What changes have you witnessed in the industry over the last 25 years? Is it easier to break out as a musical artist today in the age of YouTube?

It’s better because it’s in the hands of the artist, that’s for sure…but it’s also like television.

There are a million cable channels that are all doing great programming. We had three (networks) back then, not a million choices.

Thank God, we have DVR and boxes and Apple TV. As an artist, you have a much better shot if you have a platform and a brand. You have the control, but you’d better be a branding and marketing expert, also.

How do you explain your longevity in a rapidly changing industry?

I’ve definitely proven I have longevity and tenacity. I keep emerging with new inventions and reinventions. Chi moves and you move with it, from my TED talk and my memoir, all facets of my career that are important to continuing the longevity and legacy of Taylor Dayne.

It’s also about being a powerful woman and owning who you are.

Many of your fans have grown up with your career, haven’t they?

I find I’ve had a much deeper connection with my audience and my fan base has grown and grown. You can’t deny 25 years in the business and with the internet and social media, we’re so much more involved between fan and audience.

There’s a lot more invested by everybody. Aside from the touring, which is a bitch. There’s nothing fun about flying or getting anywhere anymore.

“Tell It to My Heart” made you a gay icon. How important are your LGBT fans?

They’ve been a very loyal and supportive audience and movement for me for 28 years.

What does the future look like for Taylor Dayne?

Hopefully I’ll be sitting behind a New York Times bestseller and on top and be able to get my voice out there in a way that I’m proud of, touring on my own terms…and enjoying the ride. (It’s about) building so you can choose your next project, it’s exciting.
