THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

The great British stage and film actor Mark Rylance was interviewed last spring by a reporter who asked why performing on the stage continued to be so important to him. With no hesitation Rylance replied with one word: community. “On location,” Rylance observed, “the crew might have a sense of community, but not the actors, who read their lines and then return to their trailers to prepare for the next scene. On the stage everyone is working together toward the same goal, which is to provide the audience the best dramatic experience possible. Every night.”

Schools are like that—everyone working together to provide their students the best educational experience possible. Every day. At St. Francis Episcopal School the intellectual capital of trustees, the hard work of parent volunteers, the enthusiastic support of alumni, and the generous financial support provided by so many make all the difference in this important work.

The quality of the educational experience St. Francis Episcopal School provides its students is high, and on my own behalf as well as that of all who care deeply about this school, I want to express our deep gratitude to all who gave generously to the school during the 2021-22 school year—with their time and work, their advice, their advocacy, and their treasure.

Enhanced and expanded facilities, the ability to provide competitive compensation to the school’s faculty and staff, growth in information technology, enrichment in school programs—these and many other gains are the direct results of the support that SFES receives through its annual fund, capital campaign, parent and alumni fundraisers, and other gifts to the school.

It was Winston Churchill who said: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” The generosity of so many in the St. Francis Episcopal School community continues to advance the school in lasting and important ways.

TAYLOR AND BLAKE SHAVER, CHAIRS

Taylor and Blake Shaver graciously accepted the invitation to serve as St. Francis Fund chairs because they believe in giving back. “This community has blessed us beyond words and is our second family,” remarked the Shavers. “From forming friendships with other parents, to coaching St. Francis sports teams, to worshiping together during chapel—this community is who we choose to do life with.”

What they appreciate most about St. Francis is that their three children simply love school. “Our kids love it all—the teachers, the subjects they study, and their friends. St. Francis embodies everything we were looking for in our children’s education—a nurturing Christian environment, competitive academics, athletics, and an overall emphasis on the whole child."

JENNY PICKETT '00

Jenny Pickett 00 is a St. Francis Episcopal School “lifer.” All of her wonderful memories and the gratitude she feels for everything she learned when she was a St. Francis student made it easy for her to enthusiastically answer “yes,” when she was asked to serve as the Alumni Board president during our historic 70th school year. “I want to help however I can to keep the school and legacy thriving,” she said. “Looking back now, I realize how blessed I am that I spent my foundational and formative years surrounded by wonderful teachers and great peers who became lifelong friends.”

Both of Jenny’s nieces (Kennedy Blackwell ’32 and Vivian Blackwell ’36) now attend St. Francis, and she could not be happier or prouder that they wear the same plaid she did. “I know they are not only getting a great education, but they are making friends that will last a lifetime, understanding what it means to be a Christian, and are in a safe and happy environment.”

Forward in Faith

The Student Life Building will be complete this fall and fully in use by early 2023. The building will include fourteen classrooms, a dining room and kitchen which will serve both the Upper School and Primary School, a monumental staircase and entry that will allow for student collaboration and gatherings, a college counseling suite, health clinic, and office space for administration.

In February 2022, Forward in Faith, Phase II campaign donors, Upper School students, faculty, and staff celebrated the momentum of the Student Life Building. The excitement was palpable as a pine tree was hoisted to the top floor to commemorate the completion of the building's outer structure. Donors, students, and faculty had the opportunity to make their mark by signing the steel beams inside the building.

Gala returned on February 5, 2022 with record-setting attendance. Nearly 650 parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends donned their sequins, bell bottoms, and big hair to gather for a groovy night under the disco lights for a “Studio 52” (named for the year the school was founded) themed event at the Revaire. The event was out of sight! We raised $573,000 for the renovation of our Dining Hall on the Piney Point Campus, making this the most successful Gala in school history. WithFestival’s 50th anniversary postponed from 2020 until spring 2022, there was a lot of celebrating to catch up on! Our Piney Point Campus was transformed into an epic birthday bash featuring a newly added Color Run, and time-honored and messy traditions like cascarone eggs and silly string. It was a milestone to remember with all proceeds benefiting the One Community Fund, which supports special projects and areas of infrastructure improvements that are vital to the growth of our school and church.
