President’s Message Beatriz E. Terry, D.D.S., M.S.

My presidential year is quickly coming to an end. As I reflect on its inception in June 2012, I recall wanting to make the most of my year. The goals I had set out to accomplish have, for the most part, been completed, and for that, I feel a sense of gratification and fulfillment. Some of these goals included the creation of a new event the first annual SFDDA Dentist Day Picnic, as well as a financially productive and highly educational Miami Winter Meeting, political advocacy for our members at the state and national level, and the initiation of a mentoring program for recent graduates and residents. All events were well received and I look forward to their continued growth and success in the years to come. My plans for the remaining few months as your president include participating, for the second year, in the Mercedes Benz Corporate Run in April, the Women Dentists Reception in May, and the FNDC in Orlando in June. I hope you will join your colleagues and me at one or more of these events, as we would love to have you!

Our Miami Winter Meeting (MWM) was a huge success! We sold out the exhibit hall and had numerous vendors, some of whom had returned after an absence of several years. The meeting was very productive for both the exhibitors and participants alike. In addition, we had a lot of fun! We had a steel drum band entertain us over lunch and at the President’s Reception. Everyone who attended, including our first female FDA president, Dr. Kim Jernigan, helped make our meeting successful. We hope to see you and your staff again next year. A new event this year at the MWM featured both mentoring and wine and cheese pairing for recent dental graduates and residents. Over 40 dental students and dentists participated, in which fun and learning were had by all. We plan on continuing this platform for future events to help guide our younger members along. If you are interested in participating in one of our events, please contact the SFDDA office.

...I hope I achieved my most important goal, which was to inform you how important it is to your profession to belong to such a great association. With regard to advocacy, I attended the annual ADA meeting in San Francisco as an alternate delegate. Our 17th District (Florida) Delegates worked very hard on your behalf, and you should know that Florida dentists are well represented at the national level. If you ever attend the ADA annual meeting, you should consider dropping by the House of Delegates as a guest to watch it happen “live.” I also attended the FDA House of Delegates in Tampa this past January. Again, you were well represented by your local SFDDA delegates who helped address important matters related to our profession and the practice of dentistry. In addition, the Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) is busy working on formulating and proposing legislation, which will aid all practicing Florida dentists. If you would like more specifics on these efforts, please visit the FDA website (www.floridadental.org), click on “publications,” log-in as a member, and then, go to the FDA Capitol Report.

Also new this year, we plan on promoting the SFDDA and dental health at our tent at this year's Corporate Run. Through the SFDDA Foundation, we plan on giving away brushes, toothpaste and floss, while educating the public on the importance of good dental hygiene for overall well being. If you would like to join us in this charitable endeavor, please register as a runner or a walker. A link to the Corporate Run website is found on our own SFDDA website. In closing, I hope I achieved my most important goal, which was to inform you of how important it is to your profession to belong to such a great association. I also hope I have reached out to you and have made you feel included. I expect the future of the SFDDA to continue in a strong and positive direction. I am proud and honored to have served as your president. Thank you for your support, and God Bless.

Rich’s Ramblings Richard Mufson, D.D.S. Editor

As I am writing this for our next newsletter, the holiday season is fast approaching, kids are home from college, malls are flooded with last minute shoppers, and a cold front recently came through our state reminding us that it was once again “a time to be thankful for all that we have.” This heartfelt message would seem all the more important in the wake of yet another of the most tragic and sad moments in our nation’s history – the senseless massacre of 20 innocent and unsuspecting first graders and 6 teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

This would of course include our health, the well-being and happiness of our families, our friends, our colleagues, others in the world we respect and care about, and the positive and intimate relationships we share with one another. Many of these relationships have involved the mutual sharing of great experiences, in great places, with unforgettable and fond memories, all of which are truly irreplaceable.

As this past year drew to a close, and with the beginning of yet another year and a new chapter in our lives, I invite you to join me in taking the time each day to appreciate all that we have. Give your spouse, significant other, your kids, other family members, your pets, a big Taken for granted at times, or temporarily put somehug, and tell them how much you love and appreciate where on a back burner, we may find ourselves unaware

Beneath the superficial headaches and pressures of Black Friday, marketing, commercialism, spending, and trying to figure our where would be the hottest venue, and with whom, to spend New Year’s Eve each year, lies a deeper and more meaningful message or purpose –

or unsuspecting of just how important, or how fragile, many treasured aspects of our world can be until some unexpected or unwelcome change may come along to disrupt it, take part of it away from us, and then remind of that for which we needed to be more mindful and appreciative. Beneath the superficial headaches and pressures of Black Friday, marketing, commercialism, spending, and trying to figure our where would be the hottest venue, and with whom, to spend New Year’s Eve each year, lies a deeper and more meaningful message or purpose – the importance of taking the time to stop, relax, take a deep breath, and realize how much we have in each of our lives to be thankful for. 4

them. Let your friends know the same. Take the opportunity to be thankful for those we care about, and who care about us, and for that which in our lives, both big and small, makes us happy, whole, and the best person we can be. Have a very healthy and wonderful 2013!

2013 Florida Dental Association Semi-Annual House of Delegates Dear SFDDA Members, On January 25-26, your South Florida District Delegation attended the semi-annual meeting of the Florida Dental Association House of Delegates (FDA HOD) in Tampa. The two days were long and crammed with meetings. The delegation worked on numerous resolutions that ranged from internal FDA policies to those that will be sent to our state Board of Dentistry. One of the main topics addressed was that of required qualifications to permit full time dental school faculty to treat patients, both on the clinical floor as well as in faculty practice. Thanks to Tom Ward and Carlos Sanchez, attention was brought to the many discrepancies within the existing laws. Your delegation offered significant information and testimony on how best to improve our present educational system, while also assuring protection of the public. Thanks to the efforts of your South Florida District Delegation - our ADA 17th district trustee and your ADA Delegation will also be asking the ADA to study and compare the delivery of Medicaid benefits between Managed Care and fee-forservice models.

professionalism gave SFDDA a definite voice on the floor of the House of Delegates. Your delegation members also take significant time out of their busy practices and personal lives to attend the preHouse of Delegates caucus meeting, review the numerous resolutions and other materials in preparation for the HOD, travel and attend this semi-annual meeting at the Tampa Airport Marriott. They do so for the benefit of all, and for the pride they have in our profession. Next time you run across one of your delegates, thank them for their contribution. I also wish to personally thank our delegation for making my time with them so worthwhile. I was very proud to have been with such a great group, and I believe they exemplified the wealth of talent and dedication that we have here in South Florida. We welcome any of our members who would like to make a difference and contribute to the profession that everyday provides them with the means to live a gifted life. Just stop any of us and ask, “How do I join?” Jorge Centurion, DDS SFDDA Delegation Chair and FDA Alt. Trustee

There were long days and fun nights. Thanks to our new young members, Drs. Rodrigo Romano, Mark Limosani, Piero Palacios, and Esteban Leon, the evening was entertaining and made the long days enjoyable. Dr. Brian Gurinsky, a Fortress Dentist. I live in Denver, Colorado. God’s Country. I skied here once in college and that was it, I wanted to live near the mountains. I started my own practice in 2003. It’s not a typical perio office. Our practice is focused on implants and soft tissue grafting and we see patients of all ages. They all call me by my first name. I chose periodontics because I like the challenge of surgery and the ever-changing techniques and materials. We do a wide variety of procedures and each case is unique. I believe in creating a caring and nurturing environment for my patients. I see one person at a time and everyone gets specialized care. After surgery we send them home with a bag of food and call them that night. We try to do the little things. That sets our practice apart. I’m involved in the academic side of the profession. I teach surgery and do active clinical research. I’m the leading researcher on a revolutionary new material that may change the way we do gum grafts. I am a sports and music junkie. Living here is so conducive to being active and staying fit. I enjoy skiing, basketball, tennis, running and triathlons to help me decompress and stay on top of it all. I think of my two grandfathers when seeking moral or professional guidance. They both epitomized integrity, work ethic and compassion. In a situation, I’ll think, what would they do? I recommend Fortress professional liability coverage. My previous insurance company could settle a case without consent. If they settle, it’s a permanent mark on your record even if you’ve done nothing wrong. That was a big sticking point for me and the reason I switched to Fortress.

Over 14,000 dentists trust Fortress with their professional liability insurance. When you choose Fortress Insurance Company for your professional liability coverage, you can be confident that your practice is protected. We are owned and operated by dentists and only insure dentists. Aggressive claims defense, valuable risk management and outstanding customer service are why dentists all over the country have selected Fortress. Our local agents are responsive and knowledgeable too. To get Fortress protection* call Ron Backer at Gracey-Backer, 800-272-6055. Tell him Dr. Gurinsky sent you. Fortress Insurance is owned and operated by dentists.

Student Mentor Initiative Launched at the 2013 Miami Winter Meeting Co-sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA), the South Florida District Dental Association (SFDDA) and Total Bank, the Student Mentor Initiative was held during the Miami Winter Meeting on Saturday, February 2 inside the exhibit hall. Dental students, residents and newly licensed dentists were invited to attend a professionally hosted wine and cheese pairing which followed a very frank discussion on “I’ve Graduated What Happens Now?” SFDDA member dentists representing the various practice models that currently exist in the dental profession, including corporate, solo, public, associateship/partnership and teaching, served on the panel.

We are looking for a few of our members to take some time to help the next generation of Dentists. Join the South Florida District Dental Association Mentorship Program Mentoring is a rewarding experience which allows you to share your expertise and experience with a dental student or resident. Please call the SFDDA for more information (305) 667-3647 12

They addressed the group with an informal approach, talking frankly about their experiences upon graduating and then stepping into the real time work of dentistry. The audience was given an opportunity to ask questions and exchange their information with the member doctors present, who now serve as mentors to the students, residents and newly licensed dentists. The topic of membership in the tripartite was also presented, encouraging the those who attended to join the ADA through their local districts. Among the member benefits mentioned, emphasis was placed on the social aspect of membership. The relationships that are forged as a result of membership in the tripartite are beneficial for several reasons. These include patient referrals, discussion of mutual cases or procedures, camaraderie and solidarity in the preservation of the profession and the well being of the public it serves. Total Bank provided an iPad mini that was given away as a door prize during the event. The event was well received by all who attended, and there are plans to continue to provide opportunities for students, residents and newly licensed dentists to meet and mingle with member dentists. Let us know if you would like to be a mentor to the upcoming generation of young dentists.
