elcome to SF Camerawork’s 2016 Benefit Auction catalog. We hope you will be as pleased as we are about a new catalog design that provides improved viewing of the fabulous selection of vintage and contemporary photography we have on offer this year. Our intention is to create an easier read for our collectors as well as to best represent the artwork so generously donated by our supportive community of artists, galleries, and collectors.

Our annual auction is a tradition dating back to the late 1970s. Many collectors acquired their first photograph at a Camerawork auction, many artists found new collectors through the Auction, and countless exhibitions and programs were made possible through the funds raised by the sale. We hope you will participate this year by adding new artwork(s) to your collection; in doing so you are directly supporting our work to promote and foster creative photography in the Bay Area.

As a new element of the Auction program, we are honored to have Sandra S. Phillips, SFMOMA Curator Emeritus, leading us through a selection of her favorite photographs at the Preview Reception on Thursday, October 27th.

This Untitled photograph is the first time a single photograph has been isolated and presented from Lazarus’ ongoing Recordings, a series of installations the artist has been constructing since 2008. In these installations, Lazarus arranges found, inscribed photographs image-facing-the-wall. These found objects continue the artist’s practice of assembling archives that explore the private and public meaning of photographs, as well as the nature of the medium itself. As the artist states, “it is in the (evolving) margins of the photographic medium that I find nascent meaning.” This photograph is an outtake from the commissioned installation currently on view at SFMOMA: About Time: Photography in a Moment of Change.

Chicago-based photographer John Opera is uses innovative approaches to making photographs to explore scientific and natural phenomena. Here, Opera uses tube lights and a turntable setup to create his composition, a precise double fan pattern that appears as lines emanating in opposite directions from a single point. The canvas height is the same length as the bulb and defines the arc of the bulb’s rotation within each frame. Opera has been working with the cyanotype-on-linen process since 2011, rigorously exploring the visual possibilities opened up by combining photography and painting.

Binh Danh is known for his use of antiquated photographic processes—like the daguerreotype— to reflect on contemporary life. Danh’s recent work focuses on the San Francisco cityscape, rendering scenic vistas, sites of civic engagement, and familiar street scenes in exquisite detail. For the artist, this piece is many things at once: an homage to the city he loves; a nod to pioneering photographers like Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge; and an effort to freeze an important moment in San Francisco’s history at a dynamic time of economic growth, disparity and displacement.

North Carolina-native and 2016 Guggenheim fellow McNair Evans mines the intersection of landscape and history with national identity in his photographs. This image comes from Evans’s In Search of Great Men, an epic project combining original photography with first person, passenger-written accounts to explore contemporary American culture through the status of our passenger rail system and those currently traveling by train. Selections from this series were recently acquired by SFMOMA, and a solo exhibition of photographs and documentation from this project is on view at the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery until November 18.

Chicago-based artist Barbara Kasten has been working with photography for almost 50 years. Formally trained in painting, textile design and theatre her abstract, geometric photographs of imagined architectural spaces draw on Bauhaus principles. Kasten starts by constructing elaborate room-size sets with mirrors, plexiglass, lattice and wood, which are then photographed through colored gels using the Cibachrome process. A touring retrospective of her work opened at the ICA in Philadelphia last year, and just closed at MoCA in Los Angeles in August.

South Africa-based photographer Roger Ballen is well known for his complex and controversial photographs of rural South Africans. Ballen works collaboratively with his subjects in a style that incorporates drawing, sculpture, collage and elaborate sets. He has also worked extensively with rap/performance artists Die Antwoord; this picture of singer Yolandi was taken during the making of the video, I Fink U Freeky, which Ballen directed with co-star Ninja. Ballen’s work has been featured in numerous publications, the most recent of which is The Theatre of Apparitions (Thames & Hudson, September 2016). He is currently working with designer Sarah Praill on a retrospective book to be published by Thames & Hudson in 2017.

Henri Cartier-Bresson was a pioneer of street photography, using a handheld camera to capture fleeting moments in everyday life. In 1934 he signed up for a French ethnographic mission to Argentina. In the end the mission was cancelled and instead the photographer spent a year in Mexico, working for several newspapers there. This iconic image of two prostitutes leaning casually out of a pair of windows was photographed during this time and is representative of Cartier-Bresson’s ability to communicate an entire emotional and human event in one picture.

To make his photographs, artist Matt Lipps employs a labor-intensive process refined through years of work on previous series. Each image is mined from his personal archive of “already used” pages— remnants from which images had been cut out and used in previous works. This photograph, from his most recent body of work, “Looking Through Pictures,” explores the genre of still life photography in relation to the mise-en-scène of theater as a space for figures, props, objects—and photography itself—to perform. Lipps has work in upcoming group exhibitions at Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco, and with Klemm’s, Berlin, at Paris Photo. His photographs are held in a number of public and private collections internationally, including SFMOMA, The Saatchi Gallery, Hammer Museum, and the Pilara Foundation Collection.

Lewis Hine was a sociologist who turned to the camera to effect social change, particularly around American poverty, labor, and children. The artist composed his images to elicit sympathy from viewers, who encountered the photographs in exhibitions, periodicals, and lectures. This vintage photograph comes from Hine’s later work, which expanded in focus to encompass a broader range of labor, depicting work in factories and various craft trades. A major exhibition of Hine’s work, Soulmaker: The Times of Lewis Hine, curated by Alexander Nemerov, at Stanford University, was on view May - October, 2016.

Photographer, filmmaker, and writer Danny Lyon has, over the past five decades, documented the lives of individuals on the social and cultural margins. In 1962, while still a student at the University of Chicago, he hitchhiked to the segregated South to make a photographic record of the civil rights movement. His other projects have included photographing biker subcultures, exploring the lives of individuals in prison, and documenting the architectural transformation of Lower Manhattan. Lyon is currently the subject of a major museum retrospective, which opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art in June and will travel to the de Young Museum, San Francisco in November.

Minor White was a prolific photographer and dedicated teacher, as well as a cofounder of the influential photography magazine Aperture. White was among one of the first faculty members in the photography department at the California School of Fine Arts, renamed the San Francisco School of Fine Arts in 1961.

His work along with the work of his students, some of whom are also featured in this years’ auction (Pat Harris, William Heick, and Bob Hollingsworth) was presented in the 1954 photography exhibition Perceptions at the San Francisco Museum of Art. This landmark exhibition presented the emerging photographers work on equal standing with established names like White, Ansel Adams, and Imogen Cunningham.

Palace of Fine Arts is part of Liz Hickok’s Fugitive Topography series, in which the artist constructed and photographed interpreted scale models of cityscapes in Jell-O. Working with Jell-O enabled Hickok to play the role of architect, sculptor, urban designer, and photo-chronicler. Re-imagining urban landscapes such as San Francisco and New York City, Hickok drew inspiration from her immediate surroundings in her hometown of San Francisco, where the geological uncertainties of the landscape evoke uncanny parallels with the gelatinous material. The buildings take unexpected turns as they bend, glisten, and melt and seemingly permanent architectural structures are rendered precarious and fragile. Hickok’s Fugitive Topography series has been shown internationally and commissioned as installations at the Headlands Center for the Arts and the Exploratorium, as well as in Scottsdale, Arizona, through the Scottsdale Public Art Program.

Edward Riddell, Jonathan Stuart (LOT 15) and Ansley West Rivers (LOT 100), were all part of The Hour of Land, a group exhibition of photographs from Terry Tempest Williams newest book The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks, exhibited at EUQINOM Projects this year. Riddell lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and has been taking photographs for more than 52 years of the dramatic landscapes in Grand Teton National Park and the nearby Wind River mountains. Riddell is currently working on a new project featuring the landscapes, people and architecture of Tuscany, Italy.

CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. The live auction will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2016 and will continue until all available prints have been presented for bidding; the silent auction will be available for bidding starting at 6 p.m. Photographs will be offered for sale in the same order in which they are listed here. Any artwork received after press time will be listed in an addendum available at the Auction. Likewise, an erratum will be produced, if needed, and made available at the Auction.

2. Any property may be withdrawn by SF Camerawork at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefor.

3. During the evening of the sale, bids will be accepted from registered and absentee bidders. Bid numbers for registered bidders will be available at the registration desk.

4. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser. The auctioneer has the right to reject any bid and to advance the bidding at his/her absolute discretion and, in the event of any dispute between bidders, to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. Should there be any dispute after the sale, the auctioneer’s record of final sale shall be conclusive.

5. Absentee bids will be accepted by mail, telephone, email, or in person. The Absentee Bid Form is an online form available at sfcamerawork.org/auction and may be used to submit bids until 3 p.m. October 29, 2016. Such bids will be executed at the lowest possible price, subject to the reserve price and other bids. If matching bids have been entered by two or more parties, the first bid received will take preference.

6. We make no representation as to the condition of any lot sold and no reference to imperfection is made in the catalog description.

All lots are sold “AS IS.” Prospective purchasers should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition.

7. Final bids for each item will be recorded by bid number and the print held at the cashier’s desk until called for by the buyer. All purchases must be paid in full on the day of the auction.

8. Payment may be cash, personal check (with proper identification), or credit card. California state sales tax of 8.75 % will be added to all purchases in state. Purchases can be shipped for additional charges at the purchaser’s request. If packing and handling of purchased lots is done by SF Camerawork, it is done at the entire risk of the purchaser.

INFORMATION FOR BUYERS The catalog description includes an estimated price for each lot. These estimates are the approximate prices we expect to be realized. They are not definitive. The bidding begins below the listed prices.

The name listed at the top of each lot indicates the artist who, in our best judgment, is the author of the work. (No unqualified statement regarding authorship is made or intended.)

When one date is given it refers to the date of the negative from which the print was made in the same year or soon thereafter. Some prints show two dates, the first referring to the negative and the second to the print. When the print date is unknown, but assumed later, “printed later” appears following the negative date. Measurements generally refer to image size (sometimes paper size) and are given in inches. The height appears first, followed by the width. All lots with estimated retail values marked by [ ] are offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold.

As a service to the bidders who are unable to attend the sale, the auctioneer will enter their “absentee bids,” subject to the Conditions of Sale in this catalogue. SF Camerawork offers this service at no charge and without responsibility for error or failure to execute bids. All lots will be purchased at the lowest possible price subject to other bids.
