t’s a challenge for SFCC to provide up-to-date fulldome Planetarium Shows amid science’s ever-expanding knowledge of our galaxy and astronomy in general.

SFCC’s planetarium located in building 28 is scheduled for a software and hardware upgrade. The work will take place over spring break, during which the old equipment will be sent to Pennsylvania and replaced with new machines and updated software. The current system was first installed in Spring of 2011 and is used to educate both students and visitors to the campus.

“Digital technology is continually changing,” said Michele Moore, Astronomy Instructor at SFCC. “We’ve been in operation for seven years, so the equipment is now outdated.”

The school currently hosts shows throughout the year that are open to students at a discount and to the public. Visitors of every age come through the planetarium’s doors for educational shows ranging from preschoolers in SFCC’s early

learning program to high school students and senior citizens.

The movie licenses used by the planetarium last three to five years, but with rapid changes in technology, these shows are usually outdated long before that.

“It’s important for us to keep up with things if we’re going to use this as a tool to educate,” said Moore.

“It’s important for us to keep up.”

The new system, Starry Night Version 7, is an overall upgrade and contains several new features for planetarium patrons to enjoy.

“Starry Night Version 7 includes new features such as accurately simulated exoplanets and binary stars,” said Chris Seale, Marketing Manager for Spitz, Inc. “As well as numerous

performance improvements to increase the quality of real-time astronomical simulations.”

The upgrade costs around $53,000, which includes the new system as well as five new full dome movies.

Faculty and staff raised funds for the update through Strategic Planning Online (SPOL), a cloudbased system which helps highereducation institutions plan, budget and assess purchases in order to get accredited for resource allocations.

“The new updates will increase the quality of the show,” said John Whitmer, Astronomy Instructor at SFCC. “We also got five new shows separate from the update, increasing the capabilities of the planetarium.”

Among the five new movies coming to the planetarium is Cosmic Journey, specifically used for kids in the K-12 groups, as well as Planet 9, a film that explores the possibility of there being a 9th planet in our solar system.

The planetarium will reopen April 16, 2017. Admission to the planetarium shows is $3 for students and children and $6 for adults.

Funding cut to pay for new gym

Club budgets get slashed to pay for gym renovations John Chilberg & Zech Herford

ue to decreased enrollment at SFCC, student club funding will be cut by $75,000 and reallocated to funding the gym renovation on campus.

Plans are in place for renovation at SFCC’s gymnasium which will make it more suited to the needs of the students and staff. For the past two years, students at SFCC have been required to pay an $8.65 per credit fee to fund this project, but now funds will be reallocated from the student club budget to hasten the process.

Currently the board of trustees is deciding whether to cut club funding by an additional $55,000 in order to pay for the new gym renovation. The Associated Student Government (ASG) has proposed a plan to increase student fees by $3 a quarter to not only pay for gym renovation but save club budgets as well. Regardless of which plan is chosen, students have a good chance of receiving a free gym membership at the end of construction.

While cutting club funds wouldn’t affect students who were not involved in clubs themselves, the $3 fee has been the more popular option almost unanimously.

“It’s just $3, and we already pay way too much for anything anyways, so $3 isn’t going to kill

us,” said SFCC student NaiKai Yule.

A recent student survey taken by SFCC’s ASG Senate showed that 97% of SFCC students support this solution and would rather accept the small fee than a further decrease in club funding.

The final decision lies in the hands of the board of trustees, but they will likely take students’ opinions into consideration when making a final verdict.

These renovations will be comprehensive, providing upgrades to most of the building as well as giving a better athletic facility for SFCC students to use.

“They’re getting an entire new facility,” said Isabel Heisler, ASG’s Director of Marketing.

In addition to improved equipment and office space, this renovation will be making the gym more openly available to students who were unable to use the facilities in the past.

The main remodel for the gym will be adding more space to the gym floor, upgrading offices, locker rooms, and the weight room, making the entire facility more handicap accessible.

“The plans for the gym remodel will be to make it handicapped accessible and will be completed Fall of 2018,” said SFCC President Janet Gullickson.

The remodel is set to begin at the end of March.

Controversial posters found on campus Unapproved alt-right posters found glued to campus property. posters are to be taken down, it also matters if the posters are originally approved by student conduct rules and by the standards of the law.

However, regardless of content, if signs are put up with improper adhesive they have to come down.

“The posters were stuck in such a manner that we couldn’t just take them down ourselves,” said DeMello. “They were actually sprayed to the surfaces with adhesive.”

Security took a couple of posters down in order to properly document the report. However, SFCC Facilities was mainly responsible for taking the majority of the posters down because of the demeanor in which the posters were placed.

There was no prior call or report about the posters.

According to security, the posters were up for about 12 hours.

“We are here 24-7,” said Jovaonna Dunbar, Campus Safety Officer Lead. “So we have contract security that works here when we are not here during the day-time.”

“That guard actually let the person who relieves him in the morning to work know that the posters were around,” said Dunbar. “He was going around unlocking doors, noticed the posters and coordinated with facilities to get them removed.”

The posters were not just limited to SFCC’s campus, but were displayed all around Spokane as well.

“The posters ... were stuck to light posts, traffic signs, street electrical enclosures and the John Robert Monaghan statue between Monroe Street and Jefferson Drive on Riverside Avenue,” according to an article written

by Jo nathan Glover with the Spokesman Review called W hite nationalist, racist posters line streets of downtown.

Situations like this where context is deemed as political isn’t rare on SFCC’s campus.

“People put up flyers all the time and they do it outside our procedure,” said DeMello.

“Those get removed by either us depending on the content or ASG, basically whoever doesn’t comply with that. It’s not an uncommon occurrence for this to happen.

The context sometimes is uncommon.”

Students and faculty members are urged to contact Campus Safety anytime they see something that raises concern.

n Feb 23, sometime before 10:30 p.m., an SFCC security guard discovered alt-right flyers all around campus.

Two different posters were displayed. One of them read as, “White man. Tired of anti-white propaganda? You’re not alone.”

The other poster stated, “It’s only racist when white people do it.

Positively self identify, defend ourselves from criticism, organize in our self-interest, express concern about our future, make efforts to preserve our culture, desire to continue to exist as a people. Don’t put up with double

standards. Join the alt-right.”

“We have certain rules that allow people to post things on our campus,” said Kenneth DeMello, Director of Campus Safety. “You have to follow those rules. These were stuck to the walls and stuck to signs. So instantly it’s a violation of our rules, in action to damage.”

Defending Speech

Freedom of Speech is a right to every single man and woman in this country.

ur First Amendment right gives us many freedoms, one of them being the freedom of speech. Freedom of Speech is the right to express opinions without censorship or restraint. People may sound ignorant with their views, but they have every right to state them.

This issue comes to mind with the recent activity with posters being put up around campus. These posters may have seemed racist, but in many ways are not.

The poster reads, “Tired of anti-white propaganda? You’re not alone.”

It is simply an opinion and they are not attacking anyone specifically. The poster states that there is an issue with “anti-white propaganda” and that there are people willing to stand up against it. The case being made is that this is just like the Black Lives Matter propaganda and many of their movements, it is simply just for another race, in this case white people.

The only reasons the posters were taken down was because they were put up without permission, and because they were glued to walls of campus, which causes property damage. This could cause property damage and could possibly be charged as “a class C felony,” according to a report by the security office on campus. If these posters had been an ad for a restaurant, would they have been removed? Or if they had been a poster supporting another group in America, would they have been removed? Also, is this possible punishment a little extreme for a poster? Why should we discriminate against one group posting their opinions and let another group post theirs? This is what it seems like with the removal of the posters.

“We are an institution of higher education and we need to understand as a community that we should encourage people to voice their opinion and speak their mind but at the same time be willing to engage them in conversation to try to understand their point view,” said Kenneth DeMello, Director of Campus Safety. “Like we would want them to understand our point of view.”

“And hopefully recognize that in a sense that we are a melting pot and that we bring in our own views but respect the views of other people. We may change their minds or we may not. They may change our minds or they may not. That’s the beauty of freedom of speech.”

razy to think it’s my last quarter as the Editor-in-Chief of The Communicator. Honestly I’m surprised that I didn’t cry a single time, because putting together an actual publication can be a really emotional process. Unless you count tears of laughter, then maybe I did cry a lot. The only success I feel as the EIC has everything to do with the staff I had, I was beyond lucky with the cards I was dealt. I want to acknowledge everyone who went through this insane experience with me, you guys are the real MVP’s. The Communicator has my whole heart and has shaped me into a more driven person as far as pursuing a career. My advice to the future EIC is have a good relationship with ASG, don’t take everything too personally, definitely dive into every aspect of the paper, motivate your writers, try new things, get contributions from students outside the paper, and carry on the passion that comes with the paper. The paper is like a baby and you can’t just ignore it. I am really going to miss The Communicator, but it’s time for me to sign off. To all the staff I’ve ever had, past EIC’s who mentored me and our advisor Jason Nix thank you so much for giving me something to look forward to everyday.

ody art, body bling, self-graffiti, walking billboards, fashionable ink accessories; each of these expressions depict the physical nature of the tattoo.

What is often not talked about is the emotional sides of them. I believe people get tattoos for many reasons, whether that be for self expression, artistic freedom, memorial tattoos or religion based ones, tattoos are only bad when the meaning behind the tattoo is bad and unintelligent.

Tattoos are a conversation starter. Either there’s a story attached or a “skin”-showing session or an emotional response derived from the sight of ink art. Our current society craves individuality and self expression. And now many people wear their artistic expression. Personally, I choose to get tattoos because it reminds me of times in my past that i do not want to forget, I have this one tattoo on my right forearm that is a memorial based one for a close family (basically my sister) Bre Mack who died from an Asthma attack, the tattoo was to help me remember her and honor her always. All of the tattoos I put on my body serve a purpose, they remind me to keep moving forward.

“Another reason people may get tattooed is to cover up scar tissue, such as opting for a breast tattoo post- mastectomy,” according to h ttp://tattoo.about.com . “Covering up selfharm is another big reason.”

This is also true of a deformity or permanent handicap. These types of tattoos can prove to be healing, especially when they help improve the appearance of the body and boost confidence. Anoth-

er online source i found said that, tattoos are a mark of the 21st century, and it’s estimated that more than 25 percent of people under 30 are inking their skin. Personal expression, youthful impulsiveness, drunken mistake; the fact is that while it’s cool, trendy and even sexy, there are scary risks to one’s health. Good tattoos aren’t cheap and cheap tattoos aren’t good.

Tattoo artist, Alfonso Burton has been drawing and painting since he was a young boy he always has had a passion for doing art and wants to continue his passion as long as he can. He has his own spot to do his passion at which is draw ink up on the skin we all have and love.

“The only people that still stereotype tattoos are middle aged to old people today.” said Burton.

Tattoos are becoming more common and less looked down upon in today’s age unless you’re literally covered in them from head to toe.

“I worry the tattoo craze is apart of something much bigger than what people put it out to be it’s sort of a fatalism, that keeps people from imagining the future because somehow they expect not to see it,” said Dan Neil in a column for LA Times.

When people think about getting a tattoo I believe they are thinking something along the lines of what is apart of them they aren’t thinking how it will look in 20 years they are thinking I want to get a tattoo because it shows who I am, how far I have come and who helped me get there.

ear Editor, I am writing to express my concern regarding the lack of financial education for college students. I am a graduate student at Eastern Washington University, facing an excess of $20,000 in debt when I graduate this June for just two years of a postgraduate degree (that is not counting debt from my undergraduate degree). I wish I knew more about the weight of student loans before signing my financial future away.

Between 2004 and 2016, student loan debt in the United States nearly tripled and the current debt has exceeded $1 trillion. The reality is that student debt is crippling for young people. According to research by The American Institute of CPAs, only 39% of students fully understood the burden student loan debt would have on their future.

I urge your readers to contact their legislators asking them to vote in support of Senate Bill 5100, which will require institutions of higher education in Washington state to provide financial education to all students. The public school system and the new reign of tyranny Betsy Devos elected as the new Education Secretary for the United States of America.

he new Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s massive donations to the Republican Party seem to have paid off for her, and America will be suffering the consequences of her ineptitude for years to come.

Betsy DeVos, a billionaire from Michigan was recently confirmed as Education Secretary on February 7, only after a tie breaking vote by VP Mike Pence.

DeVos has had absolutely no experience in a public school setting.

“She has never run, taught in, attended or sent a child to an American public school,” according to The New Y ork Times.

If you were to ignore her and her family’s donations to the Republican Party that would amount to nearly $1 billion, as shown by data provided by the Federal Election Commission, it would be confusing as to how she ended up in this position. While I agree with her that something drastic needs to be changed in our education system, she has no idea how to implement changes that will offer any sort of positive changes.

During her confirmation hearing, DeVos was questioned by Virginia Senator Tim Kaine regarding her thoughts on equal accountability for tax-funded schools.

“I believe in accountability,” said DeVos. She used this line repeatedly, regardless of Kaine’s further questions probing her deeper thoughts into the matter, until she finally admitted that she did not believe that all schools that receive taxpayer funding should be equally accountable.

One more recent controversy was her claim that traditionally black schools and universities were “pioneers” to the school of

choice movement, oblivious to the fact that these schools existed because African-American citizens were segregated and not allowed to go to other schools. She later rescinded this statement, but she cannot rescind her ignorance.

One of the strongest stances she has taken is her beliefs for school of choice and her support of charter schools, as shown by her position as chair of American Federation for Children, an organization that according to AFC’s mission statement, believes that taxpayer money should go to support vouchers for parents who want to send their children to private schools, particularly Christian schools, and here is where the biggest problem resides. Everyone being able to go to the school they want, sounds great on paper but the previously mentioned vouchers rarely cover full tuition. Charter and private schools are in no way obligated to accept any student who wishes to attend, and charter schools especially are notorious for kicking out problem students. She is right that a one-size-fits-all education system is often an inefficient process that denies children’s’ individuality, but the fact remains that without accountability, standards decrease, as shown by the privatized prisons in the past years.

I don’t believe that DeVos is a bad person.

She’s an idealist, and I can sympathize with that. I too think that drastic changes need to be made to fix our struggling education system. However, I believe she has no idea what she is doing and if she manages to achieve her agenda, she will fail at solving any existing problems, and create a whole new set of problems of her own.

Common student mistakes leading to late graduation Emily Darjany sfcc.emily.darjany@gmail.com The most common mistakes made by students that prevent them from graduating on time are: taking too long to decide what degree program to follow, taking the wrong classes, failing to meet registration deadlines, switching degree programs and failing classes.

SFCC is a two year college where students can achieve a wide range of AA degrees, from nursing to fine arts. Because the degree program is only two years, students have limited time to find a degree they are interested in pursuing and complete all the classes necessary to earn that degree.

“It is okay to not know what you want to do,” said Cindy Havko student advisor at SFCC. “College is all about the adventure.”

If students take too long, there will not be enough time to complete the degree program they settle on.

“There is a page on the school site with all the degrees listed, as well as the requirements for them,” said Barb Hahto, running start advisor at SFCC. If a student knows what they are interested in but has not chosen a degree program, they can find a list of them on the SFCC website. Students will find all the degrees that are available and which classes are needed to complete them. Once a degree program has been selected, students must pay attention to registration dates and deadlines.

“College is about knowing yourself and making informed decisions.” said Havko.

After choosing a degree program, students must register for classes and get any necessary paperwork in on time. If students register late, they may not be able to take the classes they need to in time. If a student gets into the classes they need, but fails or drops a class, this could also slow them down. Some degree programs, such as math, will not allow students to continue if they receive a grade of 2.0 or lower.

When situations like these arise, there are ways to get out of school with the least damage possible.

“Life does present challenges,” said Cynthia Vigil, an academic counselor at SFCC. “When this happens during the middle for the quarter, the student will provide medical documentation and work with the admissions office directly to do a medical withdrawal from all classes. The withdrawal form all classes does not affect their GPA.”

Peer mentor exchange

SFCC program facilitates and promotes lively discourse across cultures John Chilberg

sfcc.john.chilberg@gmail.com SFCC’s International Peer Mentor Program gives foreign and American students a place to interact with each other and learn about each other’s culture. Students in this program meet every Wednesday at SFCC in building 30, room 107 at 1:30 to talk about a given subject and relate their views on them over food and other various activities.

This program is designed to increase healthy communication between people of different walks of life, and increase understanding of other cultures.

All of the students were very engaged in their conversations, willfully participating in their discussions and enjoying the food.

This program has been around for 12 years and is managed by Teresa Gay. Students involved in the program can receive extra credit for Intercultural Relations, in which most American students from this class are enrolled. Students can also receive an Intercultural Appreciation Certificate to show completion of the program by attending eight consecutive Wednesday meetings, as well as three additional meetings

“The program’s purpose is to promote intercultural relationships and communication between American and international students,” said Gay. There is also a different theme every week to promote discussion and activities, such as Valentine’s Day, or movies.

Abilash Singh, an Indian student at SFCC, has attended three meetings so far, and has been paired with both students from America and Ecuador, and has learned about the different foods and habits of other cultures. He appreciated the experiences he has had through this program.

“We get to know other people from other cultures very well. Diversity is beautiful,” said Singh.

He also learned about other differences in culture that he had noticed. He related that we begin working much earlier than people do in his culture, and also that people in America are more open in greeting each other in passing, in contrast to the more reserved Indian culture.

An American student, Ashley Hurt, has also enjoyed her time in the program since she began at the beginning of winter quarter. She has been paired with a Chinese student, and has expressed how she has valued making connections between cultures and expanding on what our cultures know.

he power behind student involvement is undeniable. Rallies that arise on and off college campuses advocate current local and world issues that students should at least be aware of, if not involved in.

This rally, held in the fall of ‘83, sparked student interest in the value of their educations. Students gathered outside a faculty member’s office in protest of recieving an education and not putting a price on what its worth.

Such events bring students together as a community on campuses.
