The legends of Polly McMahon and John Smith to be remembered by all.

The Communicator On Nov 8, Polly McMahon passed away from cancer. She had recently won Faculty of the Year for Community Colleges of Washington and was a social services and gerontology instructor at SFCC. On Nov 6, John Carrol Smith passed away. He worked as a graphic design instructor at SFCC for 30 years, retiring in 2014.

“I think helping students that had lots of challenges and helping them become successful and getting their degrees would be her legend among campus,” said Judy Noel, previous colleague and dear friend of McMahon.

“Polly supported her colleagues and helped thousands of students,” said Noel. “On her facebook, many students posted telling their stories on how they met her in the lowest part of their life and how she was a cheerleader for them till they graduated and even got their PHD.” John Smith didn’t have many who knew him. Those who do had loving things to say. “He had a love for his students,” said Bonnie Brunt, visual and performing arts dean. “He attended the grad show for the design class and posted on his social media about how amazed the department has continued.”

with former students and that he cherished their fond feelings for him and was immensely proud of who they are and what they had become and that after all, that’s why he did what he did with the department for 30 years.

“John worked with over 2,100 students and affected their lives to where they continued their education or finished their degree love for his here,” said Greg Stiles, graphic design instructor.

“He was my men-Bonnie Brunt tor, resource, colleague and friend.

He was humorous and patient with his students and with me and always cut to the chase in a humorous way.”

According to Stiles, him, John, and Doug Crabtree were great friends. “Big part of the program was due to John,” said Crabtree, graphic design instructor.

“He knew how everything worked and helped out many students. They would call him the Jedi master.”

According to Connie Pittman, student achievement manager at SFCC, John was an asset to the program and the college for many many years.

“Personally he impacted my life in several ways, while managing the Program Review process I worked closely with John,” said Pittman. “His sense of humor was only outdone by his desire www.communicatoronline.org

to do what was best for the students in the program.”

Both Polly McMahon and John Smith impacted students and faculty and have legends to be told to those who come to SFCC in the future.

IMAX theater rolls final credits

Demolition of the IMAX sparks controversy in Spokane.

Madison Pearson The Communicator The IMAX Movie Theater has created buzz for over four decades among tourists and locals alike, but it could be rolling its final credits sooner than later.

The theater became an iconic piece of the Spokane skyline after its initial construction in 1974 for the World’s Fair. In October, the Spokane City Council voted to demolish the building.

“Attendance declined after River Park Square opened their IMAX screen across the street,” said Fianna Dickson, spokeswoman for the Spokane Parks Department. “It was no longer financially viable.”

The IMAX was removed from the new Master Plan of Riverfront Park in 2012 when the Park Board started to see large declines in attendance and revenue.

“In 2005, the IMAX made a profit of about $67,000,” she said. “By 2012, we had a loss of about $165,000.” Though the IMAX had declining revenue, some locals sought out ways to attempt

In an article published in The Inlander, Hal McGlathery, the former Riverfront Park Manager, said that to him it was a ‘no-brainer’ to save the IMAX. He proposed that purchasing a digital projector could potentially save the IMAX and bring in more traffic to the theater.

“We lost the ability to obtain licenses to how current-day popular films,” Dickson said. “So we focused on educational films but, those aren’t significant moneymakers.”

Vigil and Goodman: new deans spill the beans The fresh administration layout their vision for the campus.

Emily Darjany The Communicator Cynthia Vigil and Elodie Goodman are both new Deans at SFCC. Vigil is the new interim Dean of student services while Goodman is the new Dean of social sciences, economics, accounting and human services.

Both are responsible for the overseeing their departments and the management of those departments.

Before she was an interim Dean, Vigil worked for the Institute for Extended Learning as a counselor. There she helped students earn their GED or diploma. In 2010 Vigil came to work for SFCC as a student counselor and department chair. In September, Vigil was hired as interim Dean.

World AIDS Day

Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence teach about AIDS Magdalena Clough the Communicator World AIDS Day, advocating awareness, will roll around again on Dec. 1.

According to teaching materials by the World AIDS Day website, there are over 36 million people living with HIV worldwide, nearly half of which are women.

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is an incurable virus that if not treated can lead to AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, according to HIV.gov.

On campus an event on World AIDS Day with the Spokane Regional Health District and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be held.

“Our purpose as Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is to bring joy and expedite people’s guilt that they may carry wherever we go,” said Sister Rae Lynn d’Butts. “As well as advocating for HIV/ AIDS, as well as honoring World AIDS Day as a memorial day of the year.”

World AIDS Day and hand out condoms and information, as well as glitter blessings and celebrating the second anniversary of their mission house in Spokane.

“We will also have Play Fair safer sex pamphlets,” said d’Butts. “Developed in San Fransisco by a sister, it was the first safer sex pamphlet in the world oriented towards gay men.”

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, with their organization The Traveling Red Veil, have a purpose house that is celebrating it’s two year anniversary on World AIDS Day. “The Sisters do something for the community as a whole that other organizations are not able to do, they challenge the status quo,” said d’Butts. “They were the first to hold fundraiser for HIV/ AIDS in 1981.… something nobody else has done.”

The SRHD will be attending the event, and offering their services. According to the SRHD website they offer HIV and syphilis testing, access to PrEP, an HIV prevention drug, and even partner notification services for those with the illness.

Agustin Martinez, ASG Outreach Programmer who set up the event said that he is trying to raise awareness for different issues, and timing of World AIDS Day is perfect. “[The event will] hopefully raise awareness that HIV/AIDS is still alive and needs to be addressed,” said Martinez. “There is still stigma and other diseases that are not addressed, we want to make people more aware of their behaviors.”

The Communicator “You’re a resident,” said State Supreme Court Justice Steven González, about DREAMers during a speech to WACTCSA student leaders in Olympia. “You deserve an education just like any other Washingtonian.”

DREAMers, or undocumented residents raised in America, who are pursuing secondary education in Washington State have access to services and support that may help them, should their legal status become a barrier to their dreams.

Spokane City Councilman Breean Beggs is a part time civil rights lawyer who spent five years on the Washington State Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Board.

The board according to Beggs, helped undocumented people because most federal and state legal aid is not available to them.

“To send them off to some other country, put aside compassion and human rights but purely economically, it’s a bad idea,”

said Beggs. “Because DREAMers are Americans.”

One of the things that the city council has done in the last year is pass a civil rights ordinance which condensed existing civil rights protections, and strengthened them in chapter 18 of the Spokane Municipal Code. “(One addition to chapter 18 is) that police should not check for immigration papers,” said Beggs. “So that if you are a victim of a crime, you can call the police without fear by doing so that you’d get deported.”

On a smaller scale, there is a lot of support for DREAMers on campus according to the acting vice president of student services, Chrissy Davis Jones, and the interim dean of student support services, Cynthia Vigil. SFCC offers assistance to undocumented students and DACA recipients, including access to scholarships and WASFA financial aid, from the State of Washington.

“One of my DACA students, both of her parents were working two jobs to pay for her (tuition),” said Vigil. “The need is great.”

DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is not citizenship but an executive order by former President Obama. It delays undocumented people, who grew up in America, for two years from being deported through prosecutorial discretion. They had a chance to renew their eligibility for the program until President Trump rescinded (revoked) the DACA program last September.

DACA granted them a work permit with which they can, among other things, apply for a driver’s license in most States, social security card, join military and college.

The nickname DREAMer comes from stalled legislation in Congress that is named the DREAM Act, or the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, which would grant conditional residency and would later qualify undocumented resi-

dents for citizenship. Similar legislation has also been introduced that is the BRIDGE Act, which moves DACA policies into law.

According to their mission statement, SFCC has open access policy that welcomes all students, regardless of legal status.

“Nobody should be asking (for legal status) besides Admissions,” said Vice President Davis Jones. “You come and we will serve. We have no restrictions on access or credits, you are eligible like every other student.”

Prepping Winter Quarter The many helpful ways to start a new quarter.

New students need to submit college applications into the Admissions Department by December 13.

Students should get an early start on placement testing, parking passes, student I.D.’s, buying books, etc., advises Jedidiah Lara, Credentials Evaluator at SFCC. “Students should proactively view their student center,” said Lara. “A lot of things don’t have to wait till the last day, like paying tuition or books. Book-lines can be hours. If you don’t have to wait till the last day, don’t.”

Students can buy a Parking pass a month early, or submit FAFSA form early. Once students have student I.D., they can ride the bus. Students just hop on the bus and slide their student I.D. Vehicle parking permits are available for purchase at the Cashier’s Office, located in the Student Union Building 17, lower level.

License plate numbers are required in order to get a parking pass.

A lot of departments communicate through the Student Center. Financial aid, advising holds, testing enrollment dates, and wait list status, all communicate through the Student Center.

Any student going to SFCC had to either attend a running start seminar or the new students’ orientation. Running Start students need to meet eligibility, which would be 3.0 cumulative GPA or score 3 or higher in Smarter Balance.

“For regular students, financial aid is really important,” said Hahto. “The FAFSA [Free Application for Federal Student Aid] opened up Oct. 1st. So, for next Fall, whatever you plan on doing next year, you need to do right now.”

The priority deadline to submit FAFSA for winter quarter was Oct. 20. Students should start looking ahead.

“During this time of year, we talk a lot about what they’re doing next year,” said Hahto. “Students should have taken ACT/ SAT, language requirements if they’re going to a four-year college, which would be two years of high school language, or one year of language with SFCC.” According to Hahto, students should get their application for Fall Quarter next year done before Christmas. Fall Quarter is to an end, with planning, students can finish on a high note.

“I wouldn’t say winter quarter is different from any other quarter, to be ready the first day, and stay on top of everything,” said Hahto. “My big thing I tell students now with finals is to really pay attention, know final schedules, and keep grades up, to have a good finish to Fall Quarter.”

Apfelbaum on Wednesdays. These take place on the second floor of the Gateway Building. In past meetings they have discussed topics such as math anxiety and plagiarism.

Some students study in groups. This makes it that students can bounce ideas off of each other and can learn other perspectives of different topics. Working alone could end up not challenging a student enough to dig deep into the information that they are studying.

“In order to master a topic,” said Apfelbaum. “Try explaining it to someone else. If it doesn’t make sense to them, you’ll know that you need to study more.”

Good communication skills are valuable in every aspect of life. Here are the tools needed to cultivate them.

Communication is a skill that in theory is very easy but in practice is not so easy. Good communication can be simplified into a few key elements; the ability to take constructive criticism and be able to argue

without emotions taking over.

Everybody communicates differently with different groups of people. Communication between friends is going to be different than between child and parent, and again it will be different than between teacher and student.

In today’s society, the sports world is constantly under the microscope regarding health issues.

With tons of current and former NFL players being shown to have intense forms of CTE, which is a degenerative brain disease where a protein clump will attach itself to the brain, slowly killing brain cells.

“Aaron Hernandez suffered the most severe case of chronic traumatic encephalopathy ever discovered in a person his age, damage that would have significantly affected his decision-making, judgment and cognition,” according to Washington Post.

The MLB also has its fair share of injuries, we see pitchers going down because of torn rotator cuffs and other strains.

The viewer can usually see the direct impacts of an injury, whether it’s the player

should be professional. Students should not talk to their instructors as if they were friends.

Though the student and the instructor might be friendly, correspondence should always sound professional. It is the instructor’s job to teach, not to be friends with the students.

“I really like that saying I heard in a workshop I took,” said Sara Edlin-Marlowe, a communications instructor at SFCC. “You have to agree to disagree.”

This means that both parties understand that they have opposing views on a topic but they do not begrudge the other their opinion.

“I fractured my tibial plateau,” said Everman. “I went through six months of physical therapy and was on crutches for three and a half months.”

“Physically I haven’t been as strong in that leg ever since,” said Everman. “I have arthritis and will have to get a knee replacement sooner than most people will.”

When players get injuries, it can cause them to miss months of work out time.

“Mentally it’s challenging just cause I know what I could’ve done,” said Everman.

“And knowing I won’t ever be as good as I was frustrates me.” www.communicatoronline.org

“You have to be assertive and not dilly dally around.” said Caleb Heggemeier, a student at SFCC. “You have to seek out information, you can’t wait for somebody to give it to you.”

No matter the sport, injuries occur.

Brendan Duncan is a student here at SFCC who was injured last year playing basketball.

“I tore my meniscus and had 9 stitches to repair it,” said Duncan. “Which is the most my doctor has ever done on one.”

Instead of letting this scare him, Duncan, took it as even more motivation to get back to what he once was.

“I was in physical therapy 2 weeks after surgery, just trying to get some range back,” said Duncan. “I pushed myself and fought through the pain just because I was tired of being hurt.”

Both Everman and Duncan are still playing sports at SFCC, volleyball and baseball respectively.

DeCaro decided to put empty pill bottles on the base, and put dollar bills in the pill bottles, knowing that temptation would make people want to be selfish and greedy and take the money. In less than 24 hours it was all gone.

“So part of my social experiment was to show that we’re surrounded with selfishness and greed even in our own community,” said DeCaro. “The interesting part is after all the money was taken, there’s been a lot questions and controversy because of it.”

A few students came in and told the Secretary of the Art Department that they saw people taking money.

Noah Marsh has big plans in life and it revolves around his love for singing Drew Thomas

The Communicator Noah Marsh is a student here at SFCC who is part of choir and takes classes that help him perfect his voice so that one day he can make it on the big stage.

Marsh is taking music theory, piano, choir, and even doing private voice lessons to strengthen his skills as a singer.

“When I was young I sung at my grandmas house,” said Marsh. “I would lock myself in the computer room and listen to musicals.”

As is customary in competition based events. There are annual get togethers where people are invited from all over the state to showcase their singing abilities.

“I went to state as a senior last year,” said Marsh. “I was really nervous the whole time. My hands were shaking and I was hyperventilating, but once I got up there I was fine.”

It’s not always about the finish when it comes to singing. It’s about showcasing your talents as a singer and proving to yourself what you’re all about.

“I didn’t place top three but I went to perform for myself,” said Marsh. “I’m proud of myself and what I accomplished.”

One of the biggest things about choir is that it takes a lot of devotion and effort, Marsh thinks, but he does whatever it takes to succeed.

“I left to go to state at five in the morning so I could go to Ellensburg by eight,” said Marsh.

When he first started singing, Noah was nervous but Marsh is used to it by now. He’s been in choir since his sophomore year of high school when he decided that he was going to fully pursue his passion, and he has his teacher Ms. Kimballo to thank.

“I get nervous all the time,” said Marsh. “I’m always terrified, like even during choir class. But I just get up there and do it. I open my mouth and go.”

Choir isn’t always a solo project. There are a lot of times where a group of people will sing at once, usually for harmonies or background.

“He was always willing to help anyone who needed it,” says Katie Duncan, a friend of Marsh’s who was in choir with Noah throughout high school. “He is so talented and leads by example everyday.”

Marsh’s work ethic was above everyone else according to Duncan. Duncan also appreciated Marsh’s ability to value Choir as a whole and thus make everyone around him better.

“I like putting voices together,” said Marsh. “It’s cool to hear so many amazing voices together at once for something huge.”

Marsh has some big aspirations as he looks towards his future.

“I really want to be a solo performer,”

Noah’s next performance is a choir concert on December 5 at the auditorium in the music building. It’s free and open to anyone who wants to come.

Pickled potato salad

A recipe from one family to another.

Magdalena Clough The Communicator

This recipe was brought from Germany by my great grandma Magdalena in 1960.

It is not a traditional German potato salad, and its origins are unclear, however we believe that it is an adaptation from either a southern German dish dressed with vinegar and mustard, or a Jewish potato salad made with cucumber, vinegar and dill.

The recipe was passed down through my family while cooking on the holidays, and was not written down until my father, Steven Clough, put it to paper to give to my grandfather a few years ago, who laminated it.

Recipe:

Boil potatoes whole, with skin until they are soft, and can easily be pierced with a fork. Drain them, and cool them, peel when they’re cool and dice. Chop pickles, and add the pickles and all the brine to the potatoes. Add chopped onion and oil, stir, salt and pepper to tase. The flavor gets stronger when let sit, as the brine soaks into the potatoes.
